Intro****************************************3DS1************************** Welcome to my first hardware FAQ since last year. This one is also the first 3DS Hardware FAQ. Enjoy. 2. Technical Specs****************************************3DS2**************** Predecessors: - Nintendo DS - Nintendo DS Lite - Nintendo DSi - Nintendo DSi XL - Virtual Boy (earliest; only if you count 3D technology, too.) Release Dates: Japan - 2/26/2011 (Launch price: 25,000 yen) Europe - 3/25/2011 (Launch price: Retailer's choice) North America - 3/27/2011 (Launch price: $249.99 U.S.) Australia - 3/31/2011 (Launch price: $349.95 Australian) 3DS Size (closed): 134 mm. wide, 74 mm. long, 21 mm. tall <- [Metric] 5.3 in. wide, 2.9 in. long, 0.83 in. tall <- [US Customary] Screens: [Top] 90 mm. or 3.53 in. Autostereoscopic (auto-produces 3D imagery). 800 x 240 pixellation. (400 x 240 per eye.) Graphic display is WQVGA with a ratio of 5:3. [Bottom] 77 mm. or 3.02 in. 320 x 240 pixellation. QVGA graphic display with 4:3 ratio. Touch sensitive. [Both] Both display 24-bit color, unlike the 18-bit of prior DS's. Weight: 230 grams <-- [Metric] 8.1 ounces <-- [US Customary, as on Earth.] Colors: This one is just a BAD guess: 16,777,216. See, the previous four DS's has 18-bit color and displayed 262,144 colors. A "bit" has two pieces of data. 2 to the 18th power = 262,144. I used the same logic with the 3DS's 24-bit color: 2^24 = 16,777,216. Buttons: A, B, X, Y - on right side, when opened. D-Pad - on left side, when opened. L - Left shoulder. R - Right shoulder. Touch Screen - bottom screen. Mic - Under Start Button. Power - Right side, below A/B/X/Y. Select, Start, Home - Below Touch Screen. Analog Slider - Above D-Pad on left. 3D Intensity Slider - Right side, top screen. Accelerometer - Inside. Just so you know. Gyroscope - Inside. Just so you know. Stylus: Included. Extends up to 100 mm. or 3.9 in. Media: 3DS game cards, DS game cards, SD cards, DSiWare*, Virtual Console games (* = needs System Update 2.0.0 for this) Gaming Compatibility: 3DS games, DSiWare with update, standard DS games, 3DS Virtual Console games. However, if a game, such as Guitar Hero, requires an accessory to be in a GBA port, you cannot use such games. Sound: Stereo, two speakers, on top screen. Allows headphones. Cameras: Two facing away from player on top of top half for 3D imagery. There is one facing player. Both are 0.3 megapixel and VGA. Again, the two outside are 3D; the inside one is only 2D. Brightness Settings: 5 Power: Anywhere from 3 ~ 8 or more hours per charge, depending on age of the console, Wi-Fi, sound, 3D intensity, or playing a DS game. Battery: 1300 mAh, life of approximately 500 charges. May then be replaced. CPU: Nintendo ARM. Storage: 2 GB of NAND flash memory. Expandable with SD cards. Memory: 128 MB FCRAM. Connectivity: Integrated 802.11 b/g wireless fidelity. Also has an infrared port, similar to Pokemon HeartGold/SoulSilver or Black/White. Regional Locking: Between North America, Japan, and Europe/Australia for the 3DS games and Virtual Console, DSiWare, and DSi-enhanced software. 3. What's Included? ****************************************3DS3************* When buying the 3DS, you should get the follow on the 3DS: - The ability to play 3DS and DS games - The ability to use the Virtual Console - The ability to get Virtual Console games: Nintendo eShop. Basically, you can buy some GameBoy, GameBoy Color, and other games from here. - Some other things: - Activity Log - AR Games (not Action Replay) - StreetPass mode - SpotPass mode - An internet browser as of System Update 2.0.0 - The Mii Maker - Camera and Sound 4. Activity Log ****************************************3DS4***************** This mode basically tracks how long you've played whichever game, like a Wii. However, if you take the 3DS walking like a Pokewalker or pedometer, it will count your steps. Walking enough each day will earn you Play Coins, which can be used with certain games and apps for special content. You can get ten per day, and have a maximum of 300. 5. AR Games ****************************************3DS5********************* AR (augmented reality) games are these games that will bend reality in a way. It is simply impossible to describe. The 3DS comes with 6 cards. One of these is used for games themselves; the others are for pictures. FYI, you can use printed copies of the cards or whatever. You need not always have the originals. 6. StreetPass ****************************************3DS6******************* This mode will let you automatically exchange data with other 3DS consoles. There are two simple examples: sharing Mii avatars is one; or, in Super Street Fight IV: 3D Edition, if you pass someone else with it, you'll have a battle with him to collect trophies. 7. SpotPass ****************************************3DS7********************* This mode simply seeks out Wi-Fi signals and will download content from them while in sleep mode. Pretty simple, I guess. 8. Mii Maker ****************************************3DS8******************** Like with the Nintendo Wii, you can make a Mii for you. In fact, you can even send your Wii Miis to the 3DS (although not 3DS -> Wii). Additionally, you can make a Mii just from your picture or by capturing QR Codes. There is also a place known as the StreetPass Mii Plaza where you find all of the Miis from players passed in StreetPass Mode. 9. Some Random Tidbits Worth Reading*****************3DS9******************** About DS Gameplay ... ~~ To play a DS in the original resolution of the DS, select the game from the menu and hold both Start and Select while the game loads. (This also works with the Virtual Console GB/GBC titles.) ~~ Despite 3DS games being region-locked, the 3DS can play DS games from any region. ~~ Despite the 3DS being able to connect to WPA and WPA2 Wi-Fi connections, DS games can only use the WEP encryptions. HOWEVER, DSi enhacned software, such as Pokemon Black/White, can use WPA connections. About Play Coins ... ~~ You get 1 per 100 steps. There is a max gain of 10 per day (1,000 steps) with an overall max of 300 coins. ~~ They can only be used with certain games, not the Nintendo eShop. About the SD Card and DLC ... ~~ Since the save data for DSiWare games are installed right onto the system, deleting a DSiWare game then somehow getting it back will let you start from where you were prior to deletion. ~~ Virtual Console games are installed right to the SD Card, and are not on the main console. However, you can exchange data to another SD Card by going through your computer. About 3DS Sound... ~~ The music files must be in .mp3 format. Not .m4a like with the Wii or DSi, but .MP3. ~~ StreetPass mode will not exchange the music itself, but only the title of the song being listened to. ~~ While playing music, you play around on several visualizers. The soccer ball and tunnel one allow to mess around using the analog pad. The latter of these also permits usage of lasers with L/R. A similar thing occurs in the stair-traversing-platformer visualizer. ~~ Remember, in DSi Sound, the parakeet would mimic your noise randomly if it was left alone, but through the Parakeet filter? On the 3DS, if you speak in the mic, the parrot will mimic your noise. Some stuff about the Mic ... ~~ Blowing into the mic will make the icons spin. The spin speed is based on the power of the blow. 10. Yes, I Know It Sucks *****************************3DS10****************** Yes, this guide sucks. I get it. But no one can make a perfect guide. However, you can help me try my best to do so. If you have something in here that I forgot (most likely) or simply want in here, send me an e-mail at SKYDRIFTERS@aol.com. Don't expect immediate responses; you should get one within ten days if I receive it. 11. If no one can think of something else, I might be done. 3:32 PM 6/27/2011 v1.05 - Apparently, people actually read the help notices! Got some good info. 1:57 PM 6/29/2011 v1.06 - *facepalm* I made some stupid mistakes with my formatting in some cases. It was mostly in the end/logo part and CTRL+F formatting. 12:09 PM 6/30/2011 v1.10 - More tidbits, and a few corrections. 3:49 PM 7/11/2011 v1.15 - Mild editing and some more tidbits. 2:40 PM 10/1/2011 14.
