Exactly 2 years have gone by and New Super Mario Bros. is finally here. The oddly named Mario game is the first real 2-D sequel in the series since the release of Super Mario World in 1991. Well I can tell you, it's about time. This game is classic Mario all the way and I think many will appretiate that. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Controls - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - In Game: Start: Menu Screen D Pad Left/Right: Move Mario D Pad Up: Climb on certain objects D Pad Down: Used to slide or butt stomp through blocks while in the air L Button: Hold to move camera left R Button: Hold to move camera right X/Y: Hold to Dash A/B: Jump off ground, wall jump while pressing Left or Right on D Pad. Deluxe for GBC. Sort of like a board game, you move Mario to each level on the themed map. When you complete a level, a path will open to a new level. After three main levels, you come to a tower. At the end of each map is the main castle for that World. If you find an alternate exit in a level, a path will open to a special area on the map, like a Toad house or something else. Other areas will require you to pay Star coins to gain access. Mario can collect these Star coins in almost every level in the game. I will have a section dedicated to the collection of Star coins in the next update. ============================================= II. Walkthrough ============================================= ____ ____ / \ / \ | ____ |- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | ____ | | || | WORLD 1 (Plains) | || | |____|- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |____| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 1-1 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The first level is as you would guess, the most basic. So I'll just tell you that once you find the Mega Mushroom, have fun and plow through as much as you can. Once it runs out, just make your way to the flag at the end. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 1-2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mario lands into some bricks and grabs some coins. Now head east, butt stomping more bricks and collecting more coins. One set will lead you down to a large "pile" of coins. Grab them all and head back up using the trampoline. A little more east and you'll see the first Star coin on a ledge. Jump up there using the bricks and grab the coin. Keep moving east and you'll notice some areas from the original Super Mario Bros. Another nod to that game is the fact you can climb on top of the level and whiz by everything, but you might miss a few things. So without climbimg on top of the area, move east until you come across the second Star coin under an arrangement of blocks. Pass the teeter-totter will be a set of pipes coming out of the ground. The first one has a pirhana plant that comes out every so often. Enter this pipe when the plant is inside and you'll be in a room with blocks, coins and a red koopa. Collect the coins and hit the koopa so he's in his shell. Now grab the shell and let it go on the bottom of the area. This shell will slowly knock blocks out of the way. Before all of the blocks are detroyed, stand in front of the shell and let it hit you until you are a small Mario. Trust me. When all of those blocks are out of the way, walk east into a room filled with Goombas. Grab the Mega Mushroom in the lone question block and plow through the bricks and goombas. There will be nothing left to destroy, so wait until Mario shrinks back down to size and collect your two 1-Up mushrooms. Now exit through the pipe. The question block you see will give you a fire flower. Grab that and head east. Towards the end you will have the choice of climbing to the top of the level or going through the pipe. If you go through the pipe you see, you'll get to the flagpole and the level is over. If you climb to the top and continue past the pipe, you will see the last Star coin and another pipe. If you go through this pipe, you are taken to an alternate flagpole (a red one) and this opens a new path on the Overworld map which takes you to a red Toad House and bypasses World 1-3 to the tower. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 1-3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Mushroom platforms everywhere. Make your way right and you'll find a block with a power-up in it and a few Red Koopas walking around. A little further and you'll find a blue, spinning platform. Jump on it and Mario will twirl in the air and slowly glide down. Glide over to the tall platform and collect the coins. Now jump on the next spinning platform to the right (which I will call a "helipad" from now on) and land on the bouncy mushroom platform to glide even higher into a row of coins which is topped off by a Star coin. Continue to glide to your right, using the floting coins as your guide. Follow the row of coins until you land on a small platform with the second Star coin on top. Underneath this are to blocks with one containing a power-up. Now you will come up to some platforms that shift up and down or left and right. The last Star coin can be found here. Keep moving ahead and you will see a red ring. Jump though it and 8 red coins will appear. Grab the coins as you move right and if you collect them all before time runs out, you will receive a 1-Up mushroom. Now just jump of the last shifting platform and grab the top of the flagpole to complete the level. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 1 Tower - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The first fortess of the game will be filled with Dry Bones and moving bars of stone. When you begin, jump up and grab the power-up in the left block above the Dry Bones. Continue to make your way up through the shifting bars of rock. TIP: I recommend that you try not to wear a blue Koopa shell in this place. If you dash, Mario will start spinning in his shell, making it easy to fall though the shifting bars and getting squeezed to death. If you are already wearing one, just try not top dash. On your way up, you will find the first Star coin near a Dry Bones. Shortly after you will see a green pipe and some spiked bars on the right of it. Jump into the pipe and Mario will launch into the air and crate a row of coins. Let Mario fall back down to collect the coins and jump into the pipe again. Now let him fall again, but this time hold right on the D-Pad to land Mario in front of a wood door. Press Up on the D-Pad to enter. In this small room are all sorts of moving stone blocks along with a Star coin. Try your best to grab the coin without falling and exit through the door. Now Mario is back underneath the spiked blocks. Jump up into this area and climb the "steps" without hitting the spikes. Grab the final Star coin and above you will find three sets of blocks that come together in a set pattern. Time your jumps right so you can jump on the blocks as they come together. This can be tricky, so try not to throw your DS if you make a mistake. When you make it though this area, you will see an orange pipe and a green one. Drop into the green one and Mario will launch in the air. But you need to time this so he is lauched when the stone walls are open. When you get to the top, you will see two large Dry Bones on each side. They are trapped behind the blocks, so they are not a threat. Grab the power-up in the blue block and enter the red door. This will be your first battle againt Bowser Jr. If you have fire flower equipped, then just throw fire balls at him until he gives up. If you have no power-ups, then you just have to stomp on his head. After each stomp, he will hide in his shell, so try not to land on it when he does this. After three stomps to the head, he will give up and take Peach to the main castle in this world. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 1-4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Slide down the hill and knock the Goombas out of the way. Then continue until you see the Green Koopa near a block on the ground. Knock him into his shell and knock the shell into the block to get a power-up. Walk right some more and you will come to an area with a tiny pipe, a large pipe and four blocks above said pipe. "Block 1" has a constant flow of coins as you hit it. The question block has a Mini Mushroom in it. Grab this little fungus and Mario will shrink down to mini size. Now run to the tiny pipe to the left and go down it. This room has water at the bottom and on the other side is a Star coin. Run across the water (you won't sink) and grab the coins and the ones that appear after. Then wall jump onto the platform with the Star coin. Go back and exit through the larger pipe. Back on top, make your way right and avoid the Goombas walking out of the pipe on the hill and soon you'll find some blocks, one of which contains a mushroom. Eat this to get rid of Mini Mario and then walk to the large mass of bricks to the right. Butt stomp the bricks that block the pipe entrance and enter the pipe. In this room is the second Star coin. Walk to east side of the room and DON'T grab any of the coins on the way. Hit the block closest to the pipe and a "P" Switch will appear. Jump on the switch and all blocks will turn to coins and vice versa. Before time runs out, jump to the Star coin and then grab all of the coins you can before they turn back to bricks. Now exit through the east pipe. Walk past some Goombas coming out of the orange pipe and grab the flagpole to finsih the level. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 1-5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This place consists of bouncy mushroom platforms and is a snap to complete. Move right and bounce your way to a power-up and a Star coin. Keep bouncing your way thourhg the area until you come to some scale platforms. Jump on these and grab the second Star coin on the other side. Make it over the next few scaled platforms and jump into the pipe coming out of the sky. Here is a stretch of bouncy platforms and floating coins. Grab the coins as you move east and you will soon come to a mushroom shaped stack of coins with the last Star coin in the middle. Now jump back down through the open space at the end. Travel east and bounce into the six blocks, one of which contains a power up. Keep on walking until you see a red ring in the air. Jump through it and 8 red coins will appear. Grab the coins before time runs out to get a 1-Up mushroom. Now bounce east some more until you see 4 bricks floating above some platforms. Get Mario to bounce underneath these blocks until he becomes "wedged" bewteen the platform and the bricks. These bricks are filled with a flow of coins, so move Mario as he bounces rapidly to get as many coins as you can. If you did it fast enough, mushrooms will pop out at the end to show that you've received all of the coins you possibly could out of that block. Bounce east a little more and grab the flagpole to end the level. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 1 Castle - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The first area in the castle consists of tightropes. Make your way across the tightropes and avoid any fire balls that shoot out of the lava. The second area has stone blocks that move in and out of the lava. Jump across these while avoiding more fire balls. Now you'll come to an area of stone walls with spikes on the bottom. Move quickly underneath the walls as they move up. Between two walls a block will be found that contains a flow of coins. Hit the block as many times as you can until the coins stop flowing out. A little farther and you will see the first Star coin between to stone walls. When the walls are down, wall jump up and grab the Star coin. When you get past these stone walls, you come to an area of both tightropes and stone blocks. Traverse through this area while avoiding fireballs. Soon you will come to the second Star coin. Wait until a small stone platform rises underneath the coin to grab it. Soon you come to a large, red door. Enter the door and walk east until you see Bowser Jr. This little chicken gets his dad to fight for him and now you've been set up for a very nostalgic battle. _ _ _ _ | || |- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -| || | | || | == BOSS BATTLE: Bowser == | || | |_||_|- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -|_||_| If you have a fire flower, you can just flame Bowser until he falls off the bridge. If not, use the floating platform to jump over Bowser and hit the switch that destroys the bridge and drops Bowser to a firey death. I was actually suprised they showed him float back up as a skeleton in such a lighthearted game. On the other side, Bowser Jr. takes Peach and runs off to the next world. Now that did not suprise me. ____ ____ / \ / \ | ____ |- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | ____ | | || | WORLD 2 (Desert) | || | |____|- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |____| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 2-1 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This stage should have been called "Avoid the Pokeys." Because that's all you have to do. The level is very straight forward and my only tip is to time your jumps for each Pokey until you clear the stage. The last pokey requires you to hit the "P" switch and turn the coins above the Pokey's head into bricks. All Star coins are in clear sight when you travel through the stage, so there's really no stratigies for them. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 2-2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - At the start of the level there are a trio of red koopas, each on it's own platform. Under the middle one is a block containing a power-up. When you continue east, you are then under the constant threat of one of the most annoying enemies in Nintendo history - Lakitu. Continue east through the maze of blocks and bricks while avoiding the irritating, cloud riding, spikie throwing koopa. Eventually Mario will come to a set of pipes - orange and green. Go down the green pipe and Mario is launched up into the air. While in the air, hold up so when Mario reaches the orange pipe, he will enter it. In this area is another set of pipes that Mario can launch from. Keep flying into the air, grabbing the Star coin in the process, until you've collected all of the coins and exit through the red pipe. Once you land, head right over the large mushroom platform and into the flagpole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 2-3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jump down the green pipe and slide down through the green koopas into the undeground maze. head right and you will see a yellow arrow pointing down. Don't head down just yet though. Wall jump into the alcove above this arrow and grab the first Star coin. Now go ahead and butt stomp down through the manhole where the arrow points. Walk left and grab the power-up in the block and avoid the bat to the manholes. B. Stomp down through the manholes and head right to the flip-door puzzle. Make your way through these flip-doors until you reach the second Star coin. Avoid the pirahna plant during this puzzle. Now head right and follow the path down to the thin layer of water on the bottom. Jump up through the "rail" and you should see a "?" switch. Hit it and the water level will increase. This is timed, so be quick and swim through the small openeing in the ceiling and hit the NEXT "?" on the left to increase the water level even further. Once you get to the highest point, move right and this takes you to the ALTERNATE exit. If you want to normally finish the level, after hitting the first "?" button, swim east instead of through the ceiling. Head past the large pirahna plant or defeat it for a good sum of coins and go through the northeast pipe where the "road" splits. Keep working your way up and head west where a series of rails are. Jump up until you see something like this: ||||||||||||| ||||||| |||/ >>> ||||||| __ |||| ______ / \ This may not be to exact ----|||| |||||||| >>>> \__/ scale, but it should help. |||| |||||||| _______________ ----||||----||||||/ |||||||||||||||| |||||/ |||||||||||||||| ----________/|||| Now dash - don't jump - where my arrows show to get the last Star coin. Now head down and east through rest of the maze which is very straightforward until you reach the flagpole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 2-4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Head right and hit the "?" switch to create a hill underneath the row of bricks. Now you can reach them and grab the power-up one of them contains. Past the 4 sets of bricks is a space where a Star coin sits above a pipe occupied by a pirahna plant. If you have a fire flower, shoot the plant as it comes back out and wall jump to the Star coin. Without the fire flower, it's difficult to time your jump without being damaged by the plant. When you finally grab the coin, head east and down a steep hill littered with goombas, pipes with pirahnas and koopas. Make your way through the underground area and you will come to a long rail and underneath is a visible Star Coin - one I have to admit, I don't know how to obtain. Past this are two blocks. Hit the left one and a "?" switch will appear. Activate it and hills will pop up to the east. Hurry and use them to reach the next area before they settle back into the ground. Here Mario will find a Hammer Bros. and the last Star coin. Head east to the flagpole and you're done. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 2 Tower - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Start by making your way up the tower using the spinning platform wheels. Continue jumping from wheel to wheel until you reach a rope. Climb across the rope and head up to another series of wheels and platforms. Head east from here to where a red ring floats above the spinning platforms. Jump through this and 8 red coins appear around the spinning platform. Grab them all for a 1-up mushroom. The next area has you jump to and from spinning, red squares. Use these to make your way up to a red pipe. Go through the pipe and enter the red door. Stomp on or shoot fireballs at Bowser Jr. until he gives up and moves on to the castle. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 2-5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - The first area consists of a lot of butt stomping to open the bricks and blocks sitting on the ground. Eventually you will find some enemies that look like a stack of bricks and blocks. Destroy these by butt stomping them. The next area has some fire snakes that bounce like slinkies, so do your best to avoid them. When you make your way through the field of snakes and block enemies, you will come to a boomerang brother. Shoot fireballs at him or jump onto him to knock him off. Go up the yellow pipe and head right to find the flagpole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 2-6 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Head east and enter the pipe. Now you are taken for a ride on a large, moving platform. Hit the 3 blocks that show up and grab the power-up if you have the time. Then watch out for the pirhana plants that float in the area. Eventually, 2 of these plants make them selves at home on your platform. If you don't have a fire flower. Be careful if you don't have this power-up. This will be a constant threat as some plants will find their way off and others will join you. Survive the ride until another platform begins to ride with yours. Use these two platforms to navigate through the area until they leave you and Mario is left to jump from small stationary platforms until he reaches the large air pump at the end of the level. Jump on the pump until the pirhana plant is forced out of the pipe. Enter the pipe and jump from the last few platforms to reach the flagpole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 2 Castle - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - A giant ball rolls through a large set of bricks. What a nice thing to see when first walking in. Continue east and avoid any other small spiked balls you come across. There are two spots you can duck in if needed. Soon you will come to a formation with a Star coin enclosed inside. Wall jump onto the top, go around and grab the first Star coin. Head east and go through a door. Continue east and watch out for the Bullet Bills in the area. Use one of the Bullet Bills as a stool to reach the second Star coin on a high ledge. On your way east, duck to avoid the next few Bullet Bills and you will come to a ledge with a B.B. launcher and a "?" switch. Hit the switch and a trench is created under the platform. Head into the trench and out the other side without being hit by the spiked ball. Nearby is another ledge with two blocks. The right block contains a Mini Mushroom. Eat this and try your best not to lose Mini Mario because it's neccessary for reaching the 3rd World. So don't pick up any power-ups on your way to the boss. Keep heading east and avoid more spiked balls on the way. Two small ledges will appear and you should go through the long passage to gain access to the final Star coin. Head back out and to the east you will see another "?" switch. Hit it and a trench will open up and give you access to the boss door. _ _ _ _ | || |- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -| || | | || | == BOSS BATTLE: Mummy Pokey == | || | |_||_|- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -|_||_| Hopefully you are still Mini Mario because if you beat the boss with Mini Mario, you unlock World 3. If you beat him with any other Mario, you unlock World 4. Anyway, Mini Mario can only damage the Mummy Pokey by butt stomping it's head. The other Marios can jump on it's head and cause damage, not just by butt stomping. The Mummy Pokey will come in out of the ground in different spots at different lengths. After three direct hits on the head, the boss is defeated. Grab the key and depending on what size Mario is, you are headed to either World 4 or World 3. ____ ____ / \ / \ | ____ |- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - | ____ | | || | WORLD 3 (Tropics) | || | |____|- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - |____| - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 3-1 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jump down the pipe and you are brought to an underwater world. Continue swimming east, avoiding both large and small Cheep Cheeps on the way. A block with changing items will appear on your way. Try to hit the block when it shows the item you desire. After collecting your power-up, keep swimming east and you'll see the first Star coin in between two pipes in the ceiling, blowing out bubbles. A little further down the path is a "P" switch. Hit it to turn all of the blocks around it to coins, but the real goal is the Star coin that is now free to grab a little east of here. Grab it before the coins turn back to bricks. Continue east and a red ring will be floating in front of you. Swim through it to make 8 red coins appear around the formations. Collect them all before time runs out and snag the reward. Head east into and exit through the green pipe. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 3-2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Cross the shifting mushroom platforms and continue heading east, stomping some enemies on the way. Then you will come across a scale platform. Hop across this and enter the yellow pipe. Down here is a large shifting platform and the first Star coin. Grab the coin and exit through the opposite pipe. Make your way pass the couple of scale platforms and grab the second Star coin. Then ride the moving mushroom platform to a another set of scales where a red ring is at. Jump through it to make the 8 red coins appear around the two scales. To get coins 6 and 7, you must stand on the platform until it falls and jump back up as it's falling. Grab the last red coin and take the reward. Get on the next moving mushroom platform and when you see the final Star coin, jump up and grab it. This can be hard, so be patient. Keep riding until you reach the flagpole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 3 Tower - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Use the middle green pipe to launch up to the fences above. Hold up on the D-Pad to grab ahold of a fence and continue your way up to a set of sparky enemies. Use Y to punch the fence and Mario will flip to the other side. Climb up the series of fences, punching Koopas when they are on the opposite side of Mario. Eventually, you will come to a wooden door. Enter this and you have the option of flipping Mario back to the other side of the fences and then head up the tower again, using the same tactics. Soon you will find the red door to Bowser Jr. Step on his head three times and you're all done. A very simple tower if you ask me. (Star coin locations be added next update). - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 3-3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Enter the green pipe and Mario is underwater again. Avoid the Bloopers and head east, hitting blocks and grabbing coins. When you get halfway through the stage (according to your touch screen display), swim down and you will see the first Star coin, a "?" switch and a bubble blowing pipe. Grab the Star coin, hit the "?" switch and swim up and then back down the other side before time runs out and the bubbles start blowing again. Down here you will see a red ring in the center. Swim into it and the red coins appear in a neat circle. Get them all to receive a prize. Now swim through the next area that's littered with pipes - both blowing and non. Try to go down every pipe and you'll find one that takes you to a room with the second Star coin. Make your way to the end and swim down into the blowing pipes until you reach the final Star coin. When you grab it, four Bloopers appear, so jet back up and exit through the top pipe. Jump past the three pipes to reach the flagpole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 3 Castle - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Head east, avoiding the large spiked pillars that jam into the ground. Grab the power-up when you get to it and continue heding east where you'll see the first Star coin under a railing. Wait until the pillar goes back up to grab it (duh) and get back out before it shoots back down. Smack the Dry Bones on your way east and you'll soon come across the Thwomp guys from SM64. Wait until they fall to the ground and then pass. The third thwomp acts as a bridge over the spikes and from there, jump to the pole and climb up. Jump over the small platforms and grab the rope. Swing Mario back onto the ledge and head west. Jump through the gap in the ceiling and go left a little more. Fall through the hole and grab the second Star coin on your way down. If you timed it right, you should have landed on the same thwomp as before. Climb back up the pole again and when you get to the rope, wait for the thwomp to fall before jumping off. Continue east, avoiding the same spiked pillars and if you time it right, you should be able to make one quick dash and run pass all of the remaining pillars without having to wait. Now you are at the boss door. But before going in, you'll see a smal gap where Mario can slide through. Run and duck so Mario slides through the opening and into the water. Wait under the small blue rail until the pillar comes back up. Now jump from the water, onto the stone ledge and to the final Star coin. Wait for the pillar to come back up before heading to the boss door. _ _ _ _ | || |- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -| || | | || | == BOSS BATTLE: Giant Cheep Cheep == | || | |_||_|- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -|_||_| Three small fries and a large Cheep Cheep to go. Eventually you'll come to your 1st Star Coin floating above two spiders. Use the spiders as a boost to the coin and continue east where you will find our old friend Nessie from SM64. Ride Nessies across the river, avoioding spiders along the way. During the trip, you will see the 2nd Star Coin between two spiders. Either use the spiders as a stool or jump from Nessie's head to reach it. Contiune the ride until Nessie stops at land and contiune on foot. Jump from the "holey" platforms and spiders for the next stretch until you see the 3rd Star Coin under a rock mass between to platforms and two spiders. You can't miss it. Now head a little further east to the flagpole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 4-2 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Run east over all of the mushroom platforms, including the new purple "noodle platform" as I like to call them, until you reach a ledge made of bricks and a goomba walking on top. The question block contains a 1-Up mushroom. A little further and you see the 1st Star Coin above a brick. Use the nearby power-up block as a stool to reach this coin and just a little further down the road is the 2nd Star Coin. Stand on the right side of this "noodle platform" and wait until Mario touches the coin before jumping back up in your attempt to avoid death. East of here is a Red Coin ring which you can jump through and fetch the coins that appear. Pick up your reward and head east again. Now you should see a lone brick in the ground. Jump on the noodle platform on the right and jump over to the brick and hit it. Now climb the vine to a cloudy area that has a pipe and another brick. Hit this next brick and climb the second vine to reach the 3rd Star Coin. Go down the green pipe, head east and the flagpole is right there. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 4-3 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Jump down the pipe and enter an underwater world. Swim east and avoid the minor Cheep Cheeps in the way. Continue forward and a not so minor Eel that fans of SM64 will remember, comes out and takes up the top half of the screen. These Eels appear throughout the stage, so be prepared. Soon, you will come across the 1st Star Coin, located under a ledge. Grab the coin before the screen smashes you under there. Above the Eel that is about to appear is a Red Coin ring. Swim through it to collect the coins and earn your reward. Up ahead is the 2nd Star Coin, in between two rocks where small Eels live. Try grabbing the coin without getting hurt and move forward. A "?" switch will be up ahead on the ceiling. Hit this switch to stop air from blowing out of the pipes in the area. Now swim underneath the giant Eel and make it to the fifth pipe (green) before air starts blowing again. Down here is a large, square rock where two small Eels live. Swim above the rock and down to the 3rd Star Coin. Head back up the green pipe and move forward. Traverse through the eel infested waters until you reach the final green pipe. Go through the pipe and back up to the surface. Head east to find the flagpole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 4 Tower - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Make your way up through the sliding stone pillars until you reach the wooden door. Enter here and you will be forced to jump and climb the many gates that fill the area. What's forcing you? Besides the determination of stopping Bowser Jr., a constant flow of hot lava will fill the tower as you climb and if you stand in one spot too long, Mario becomes too toasty to continue. Now as you climb up the tower, watching for sparkies in the area. Eventually you'll find two spiked pillars, moving up and down. Avoid these and the Dry Bones and continue upward. Things are getting alot more active up here with the many sliding stones blocks and Dry Bones in the area. Do your best to avoid these obstacles and you'll find yourself at the top of the tower. Touch the Red Coin ring to activate the red coins and collect them all for your prize. To your right is the red door where Bowser Jr. awaits. The little punk has gotten smarter this time around and will hide in his spiked shell if you try to jump on him. So wait for him to throw a green koopa shell at you and use this shell back on him. Hitting him with the koopa shell will cause him to flip over on his back, exposing his little baby gut. Stomp on his groin three times and the little guy runs off. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 4-4 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - This stage is filled with our old wiggler friends. Jump on them anytime you need a boost or want to made them mad. The only way to defeat these guys are to throw koopa shells at them. Make your way east to find a Red Coin ring. A nice circle of coins is activated and use the wiggler nearby to boost yourself up to the higher coins. Collect your reward and head east some more where our 1st Star Coin awaits in an alcove with a wiggler. Don't touch the wiggler and let it walk back before jumping down to get the coin. Grab it and wall jump back up to the top and continue east. Dash cross the timed platforms and the wiggler to the random power-up box. Get a power-up and hit the brick nearby to activate a vine. Climb this vine and jump to your left where a lone question block is. Try not to touch the nearby wiggler and hit the hidden block on the left side of question block to activate another vine. Climb this to find the 2nd Star Coin. Travel east and defeat the stream of enemies that are crawling up and down the hills. On the other side of these slopes you will see the 3rd Star Coin at the bottom of the cliff you now stand on. Slide down the side of this cliff and when Mario touches the coin, wall jump off onto the nearby pipes. Make your way past the wigglers and row of flying koopas to the orange pipe and enter it to find the flagpole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 4-5 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Emter the pipe and you're sent underground. Move east and hit the Bob-omb in the brick cage to blow a hole through it, giving you access to the power-up. Mario will have to use Bob-ombs like this to gain access to areas in this stage, just so you know what to do. Use the constant flow of Bobs coming from the pipe to blow your way to the next area, filled with bricks. Up ahead are a few mushroom platforms to cross and more blue bricks. Cross the bridges that fold open and shut while avoiding the spikies that fall from the ceiling. Enter the green pipe at the end of the path to exit this area and brings you to the flagpole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 4-6 - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Head right and climb aboard Nessie to take another ride down the river. Jump on the floating islands to get power-ups during the ride. Soon you'll come to a Red Coin ring. Hit it and collect the red coins for your prize. A few steps later you will see your 1st Star Coin sitting on the island. Leap off Nessie for a moment and pass the three pirahna plants and climb back aboard. Hit the "P" switch to make all the bricks turn to coins and collect the 2nd Star Coin that is now easily visible. Duck when Nessie ducks in this next part to avoid the plants and koopas that hover above your head. On the other side you will see a "!" switch on the ceiling. Hit it to make red blocks appear in front of the green pipe and exit. Slide down this next hill and grab the 3rd Star Coin that sits in the middle of the formation of small coins and head for the flagpole. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - World 4 Castle - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Leap onto the swinging pendelums and make your way across each of them, avoiding fireballs and Dry Bones along the way. At the last pendelum in this area, dash and jump off to reach the 1st Star Coin sitting on the high ledge. Make your way past the three thwomps that live in this hallway and wall jump up where you see the coins and purple walls. This way you go around the thwomp waiting above. Head east from here and allow the giant thwomp to crush all of the bricks beneath it to gain access to the 2nd Star Coin. Traverse down this "hill" of thwomps and Dry Bones until you get to the next set of swinging pendelums. The 3rd Star Coin is visible underneath the first swing you see. Keep jumping from swing to swing while avoiding the fireballs and Dry Bones until you reach the boss door. _ _ _ _ | || |- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -| || | | || | == BOSS BATTLE: Giant Goomba == | || | |_||_|- - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - -|_||_| Pretty simple plan. Past this are more trees that drop snow and blocks. Pay attention to the top of the trees for the 1st Star Coin on your way east. Use the question block nearby as a stool. Ahead is a snowball thrower and some more piles of snow. Above a pile ahead is the 2nd Star Coin which can be obtained by using either the flying koopa or the flying block as a stool. Heading east you will find a pile of snow and the 3rd Star Coin above a slope where a "block latter" sits. Avoid the snowball thrower and use this "block ladder" to reach the last Star Coin. Minigames ============================================= Many of these minigames were pulled from Super Mario 64 DS. I love how people complain that Nintendo was lazy when they added these instead of being glad they were added at all. Anyway, the game tells you how to play each minigame, so I'll just give you my strategies and best records. Note: All of my best records are first attempts except for "Wanted!". I will update these Best Records anytime I update the FAQ for other things. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Action - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ____________________ | | ====| Snowball Slalom |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 02"45 What they should tell you is that you have to make very large swipes that go up the entire touch screen. In order to get this snowball moving fast enough to get to the finish before time runs out, that's what's needed. Don't rub up and down, just swipe up at the screen starting from the bottom. ____________________ | | ====| Lakitu Launch |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 20 Nice, light tugs are what you should use when launching the shells in the baskets. Try to guess where the baskets are headed when shooting the shells. __________________________ | | ====| Danger, Bob-omb! Danger! |==== |__________________________| My Best Record: 2380 A new minigame. Happy you complainers? It's also pretty fun, pretty simple. Just drag your Bob-omb out of harm's way while the points rack up. Sometimes the stylus will block your view of a few stray fireballs, so position your stylus accordingly. Other than that, try not to trap him in a corner where all the fireballs are headed and a good score will be in your future. ____________________ | | ====| Whack-a-Monty |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 54 Another new one. This one I like alot. Try not to focus on just one whole but the entire screen. This will make it easier to tap one after the other without stopping. Not difficult at all. ____________________ | | ====| Balloon Racing |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 13"16 One must blow mighty hard in order to get Yoshi moving up and I nearly fell over trying to blow hard enough to keep him in the air. So blow hard and fast if you want a decent score. Don't worry if a ballon pops, it doesn't matter. They just want Yoshi on the ship and don't care how many ballons you have left. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Puzzle - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ____________________ | | ====| Wanted! |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 320 (SM64DS) Try not to focus on one part of the screen. Lightly scan the entire screen for the wanted character. It's okay if you poke your guy while he is behind another during the sliding scenes. If you poke the wrong guy, 10 seconds are taken away. ____________________ | | ====| Which Wiggler? |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 8 Focus on Wiggler's tail end and match the design to one of the bottom ones because 8/10 times, the tail end is the part that gives him away. If you tap the wrong Wiggler, they all turn red and you lose 10 seconds. ____________________ | | ====| Hide and Boo Seek |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 4 My only comment is to make large strokes when the Boos are far away from each other. Trying to do one at a time with mulitple Boos on the screen is pretty difficult. ____________________ | | ====| Puzzle Panel |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 3 Whatever tile you tap, that tile and the tiles touching it will flip. With this knowledge, make the bottom tiles match the top set within the turns you are given. ____________________ | | ====| Coincentration |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 14 Look for the blocks that coins DON'T fall in. Then avoid them when it comes time to open the bricks. This is smarter than doing it the opposite way. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Table - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ____________________ | | ====| Memory Match |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 7 Just try to remember where the cards are at. No real skill here. ____________________ | | ====| Picture Poker |==== |____________________| My Best Record: N/A Hold the high cards and pairs and get rid of the rest. Not much to it. ____________________ | | ====| Pair-a-Gone |==== |____________________| My Best Record: N/A Try to match pairs so when they are cleared, another pair can be set up and cleared as well. Then when you get towards the end, you'll be able to clear the rest. - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - Variety - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - ____________________ | | ====| Mario's Slides |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 7 Try not to draw more lines than you need, because things will get way too confusing. Use the yellow arrows to speed up Mario when you know he's headed for the start ____________________ | | ====| Sort or 'Splode |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 11 Stare at the middle of the screen and you should have a good grip on things. ____________________ | | ====| Bounce and Trounce |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 16 Just keep tapping any Mario that won't land on a Shy Guy. Very simple. ____________________ | | ====| Bom-omb Squad |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 48400 Like many other people, this one is my favorite. Closely behind is Lakitu Launch - a very similar minigame. Anyway, try to shoot as many Bob-ombs as you can with one rock to get some good combos. Only shoot the Lakitu if you are being overwhelmed because you won't get points for all of the Bob-ombs that are cleared away because of the Lakitu. ____________________ | | ====| Trampoline Time |==== |____________________| My Best Record: 10 Create the trampolines at the right angle so the Marios are shot toward the open door. Don't create more than you need - only 3 are allowed at any given time. ============================================= VI. FAQ ============================================= Q: How easy is it? I heard it was easy. A: Well, it is easy, but remember, it's Mario. Not Ninja Gaiden. Some areas can be frustrating, but nothing that will make you turn it off and forget about it. It's a game everbody can play. Q: Can I play as Luigi or Yoshi? A: Luigi: Yes. Yoshi: No. To play as Luigi, look in the Tips and Tricks section. Q: Are the graphics like old Mario games or Mario 64? A: Actually, it's a mix of both. All characters are modeled in 3-D and there are 2-D backgrounds and items. Together, it creates a very nice looking game. Q: How does the touch screen work? A: Well, actually the touch screen isn't used for anything but using a reserved power-up or selecting what World you want to enter. But it's used in all of the minigames. ============================================= VII. Closing Comments ============================================= I grew up with NES like many other 19 year old gamers. And the one game we all had was Super Mario Bros. We all know that theme song and that sound of eating a mushroom and growing bigger. The Mario series is not exactly one of my favorites, but I always pick up the next game in the series because, well it's Mario. And Mario is fun. That's my viewpoint. I wasn't counting the days until the game came out, but I picked it up as soon as it hit my local Circuit City. I knew it would be worth it and I was right. This game has everything everyone loved about Mario back in the day. Back when Seinfeld first hit our TV sets and a man named George Bush was president. This game will be a nice trip to the past for those of us who grew up with the NES and played Mario all day long. I think it's great that 20 years after the very first Super Mario Bros. that we still get great games from this series. It just sucks that when we turn the game off, we're forced back to the future. With another George Bush as president and only reruns of what became one of the most popular sitcoms ever. ============================================= VIII.
