A lack of time and motivation means that this thing hasn't been updated in a long time. The backlog of emails I have about this guide has gotten ridiculous though, so I feel inspired to reduce it somewhat. - Updated the link to the Smogon Battle Tower thread, which contains a lot of different, very successful teams - Was reminded that your opponents in the battle tower do occasionally switch out their Pokemon - Added new examples of successful teams - Decided that a section dedicated to beating Palmer the second time was pointless. Although beating him the first time then resetting your streak has its uses, aiming to just beat him the second time carries no benefits. If you struggle to beat him the second time, you'll struggle to clear 100 wins. If you still want a way to beat him the second time, look under section 9.0, examples of teams that have cleared 100 wins. - Changed section 8.30 from "Sturdy ability" to a more general section about dealing with OHKO moves, as I was getting emails about substitute and focus sash as other ways of dealing with them. - Added a few random Pokemon to your partner trainers in the Multi Battle room Version 1.13 - 12/09/07 - Added a new method to beat Palmer in the second fight - Added a new team for the Battle Tower - Fixed a few minor mistakes Version 1.10 - 11/09/07 - Added a "title" of sorts, and put my contact info at the beginning, as well as the end of the guide - Changed the formatting and the layout - Added Machamp as an option to counter Double Team - Added Lock-On/Mind Reader as an option to counter Double Team - Added a new method to beat Palmer - Added a new team for the Battle Tower Version 1.02 - 29/07/07 - Fixed some Spelling Version 1.01 - 26/07/07 - Fixed some Spelling - There are no longer two "Bucks" in the list of your partner's Pokemon Version 1.00 - 13/07/2007 (Friday the 13th, Ooohhh...) - Fixed some Spelling and Grammar - Added some more Palmer strategies - Finally have some FAQs to add - Added a HUGE list showing all your Partner's Pokemon's moves in the Multi Battle Tower (thanks KrulWarrior) Version 0.90 - 10/07/2007 - Added some examples of Singles BT Teams - Fixed some Spelling and Grammar - Added the EVs and Natures of Palmer's Pokemon - Added a "Links" section - Added a Strategy for Palmer - Added a list of Partners and their Pokemon in the Multi Tower section (HUGE thanks to Krulwarrior) - All Pokes with Sturdy ability Version 0.76 - 07/07/2007 - Was told my E-mail doesn't work (thanks Krulwarrior). Changed Contact section to include the right E-mail... Version 0.75 - 03/07/2007 - Expanded the Contact section & the Future Updates. Added the version history. Version 0.70 - 03/07/2007 - Added all of the basics regarding the Battle Tower. Was first submitted as an FAQ on the 02/07/07. Version 0.50 - 28/06/2007 - This originally contained just the section, "Designing a Singles BT team," and was posted on the Pokemon Diamond message board. However, with a bit of encouragement, I decided to expand it. =============================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +++++++++++++ 2.0 - Intro +++++++++++++ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== This guide is about the Battle Tower found in Pokemon Diamond and Pearl. It originally spawned from a topic I made on 29/06/2007, titled "Battle Tower: Making a Team Mini-FAQ," which was made to try and reduce the number of topics asking for Battle Tower Team help. A few people (look in the credits) said they liked it, and provided some information. Thus, I felt inspired to write this FAQ... Please note that this guide assumes that you have a basic knowledge of Pokemon. If you don't know what DT or EVs mean, or don't know what Haze does, I suggest you have a quick browse of Gamefaqs and a look at Serebii.net. Both are very useful sources of information regarding Pokemon. The first half of this guide aims to cover the basics of the Battle Tower, explaining what and where it is, rewards, etc. The second half of the guide (Section 8) aims to provide specific help for building a team to beat the Single Battle Tower. I figured that most people would concentrate on beating this particular aspect of the Tower, as doing this is one of the ways to upgrade your Trainer Card. I may eventually expand the Guide to cover Multi & Double battles, although I must admit that at the moment, I haven't had a proper attempt at either one. Any contributions regarding this will be much appreciated (and you WILL be given FULL CREDIT). =============================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +++++++++++++ 3.0 - Where? When? How? +++++++++++++ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== First of all, have a look at your Town Map. See that separate island in the North-East corner? That is (roughly) where the Battle Tower is located, and is known as the "Battle Zone." More specifically, it is in the South-West city of the Battle Zone, known as the "Fight Area." It is not possible to Surf to the island from any point, so don't even try!! You can only reach this island once you have beaten the Elite Four. After you have done this, Fly to Snowpoint City. Immediately South of the city, there is a Sailor blocking the entrance to a boat. Speak to him, and he will ask you if you want to travel to the Battle Zone. Once you accept his offer, you will arrive in the Fight Zone. Heading immediately right, you will see the Pokemon Centre. Just after this, you should see a sign that reads "Battle Park Ahead. Where Trainers Train." Just run straight North from this point. You will shortly come across a large building, with entrances on your left and your right. In here is where you can spend your Battle Points, which we'll come to later. For now, carry on straight ahead, where you will find another building. Step inside, this is the Battle Tower. =============================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +++++++++++++ 4.0 - What's in the Battle Tower? +++++++++++++ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== In the Battle Tower, you will see three receptionists in front of you. The woman on the left is your Guide to the "Multi Battle Rooms." The woman on the middle is your Guide to the "Single and Double Battle Rooms." The woman on the right is your Guide to the "Wi-Fi Battle Rooms." =============================================================================== 4.10 - Multi Battle Rooms =============================================================================== Here, you partner with a Trainer and enter the Tower with two Pokemon each. When you attempt it, you will first arrive at a room called the Battle Salon. Here, you can meet Trainers that will act as your opponent. You have the option to communicate Wirelessly with someone else who has a Nintendo DS and a copy of Pokemon Diamond or Pearl, and pair up with them. Alternatively, you can pair up with a computer partner. Once you have your partner and enter the Tower, seven Tag Teams await you. If you defeat all seven teams, you earn Battle Points. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 4.11 Multi Battle Tower Partners, their Pokemon... +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Each of your Partners in the Battle Tower will choose two random Pokemon from the following list: ***Credit and HUGE thanks to Krulwarrior for the following info*** Cheryl from Eterna Forest (Unavoidable Event) Snorlax, Latias, Latios, PorygonZ, Porygon2, Blissey, Cresselia, Milotic, Espeon, Umbreon, Gastrodon Mira from Wayward Cave (Avoidable Event) Latios, Zapdos, Magmortar, Alakazam, Gardevoir, Gengar, PoygonZ, Roserade, Magnezone, Togekiss, Espeon, Glaceon Riley from Iron Mountain (Avoidable Event) Regigigas, Mamoswine, Rhyperior, Metagross, Salamence, Lucario, Medicham, Gyarados, Tyranitar, Slaking, Blaziken, Hariyama, Rampardos, Toxicroak, Absol, Breloom, Poliwrath, Ursaring, Machamp, Rhydon Marley from Victory Road (After E4 & National Dex, Avoidable Event) Weavile, Starmie, Crobat, Ninjask, Swellow, Sceptile, Aerodactyl, Electrode, Dugtrio Buck from Stark Mountain (Avoidable Event) Cresselia, Regice, Regirock, Registeel, Shuckle, Umbreon, Probopass, Dusknoir, Rhyperior, Skarmory, Bastiodon, Steelix, Forretress "Avoidable and Unavoidable event merely points to whether or not the quest is forced during the storyline. Cheryl is the only one who you have to partner with to continue the storyline, the others can be found at the locations above. When partnered with them during the game, they heal your Pokemon after every battle, and all battles are done in 2v2 style, with the partner controlling their own Pokemon. In Multi-Battles, they randomly choose 2 Pokemon out of that listed above and they will join the 2 Pokemon you chose in a series of 7 2v2 battles. Before you choose who you go with, each person you talk to in the Battle Saloon gives you the names of the randomly selected Pokemon, as well as telling you 1 move for each Pokemon, giving you a better idea of their strengths." - KrulWarrior +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ 4.12 - ...And their moves +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ ***Once again, a HUGE thank you to KrulWarrior. All info in the following section was discovered by him.*** As the following list shows, each of the Pokemon have more than one possible moveset. The chosen moveset is random each time you enter the Battle Tower. ******************************************************************************* Cheryl ******************************************************************************* - Single and Double Battle Rooms =============================================================================== In the Single Battle Tower challenge, you choose three of your own Pokemon to take into the Battle Tower. In the Double Battle Tower challenge, you choose four of your own Pokemon to take into the Battle Tower. Whatever your choice, you have to beat seven trainers. If you beat all seven, you will earn Battle Points. =============================================================================== 4.30 - Wi-Fi Battle Rooms =============================================================================== In Wi-Fi battles, you are actually battling other People's teams, being controlled by the A.I. You have to beat seven trainers in a row to earn Battle Points. Wi-Fi Battles operate in a ranking system. If you continue to win your battles, you will go up a rank. You can also lose a rank if you consistently lose. =============================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +++++++++++++ 5.0 - How does the Battle Tower work? +++++++++++++ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 5.10 - Explanation =============================================================================== The ultimate goal of the Battle Tower is to win 100 consecutive battles, without losing. However, you don't have to do all 100 at once! Every seven battles, you will automatically leave the Battle Room that you were in, and the game will be saved. To continue with your Battle Tower attempt, you just have to speak to the Receptionist who originally led you to the Battle Room. You will then battle another 7 trainers, and so on. If you lose a battle, your winning streak is broken and you have to start again. The Battle Tower has a Level 50 limit. All Pokemon over this will have their level reduced to 50 once you enter. They will return to the level they were once you leave the Battle Tower. Pokemon under level 50 will not have their level raised. =============================================================================== 5.20 - Banned Pokemon =============================================================================== The following Pokemon cannot be used in the Battle Tower: Mewtwo, Mew, Lugia, Ho-oh, Celebi, Kyogre, Groudon, Rayquaza, Jirachi, Deoxys (all forms), Dialga, Palkia, Giratina, Phione, Manaphy, Darkrai, Shaymin & Arceus =============================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +++++++++++++ 6.0 - Battle Points & Items +++++++++++++ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 6.10 - How do you get Battle Points? =============================================================================== Every time you successfully beat a row of 7 trainers, you are awarded with Battle Points (BP). The more battles you have won in a row, the more BP you will be awarded. For example, the first and second set of trainers will both give you 3 BP. The third and fourth will give you 4 BP, the fifth and sixth will give you 5 BP, etc. Also, you battle a trainer known as the Tower Tycoon (more on him in a later section) on the 21st and the 49th battle (or at the end of the third and seventh set, Single Battle Tower only). If you can beat him, you are awarded 20 BP instead of the small number you would usually receive. =============================================================================== 6.20 - Where can you spend the Battle Points? =============================================================================== Remember that large building you ran under, just before reaching the Battle Tower? This is where you can exchange your BP for various items. You can enter in either entrance. =============================================================================== 6.30 - What can you buy with Battle Points? =============================================================================== There are two women in this building who can both exchange your BP for items. The woman on the left will exchange BP for vitamins and various items unobtainable anywhere else: ------------------------- ITEM | BP Cost ------------------------- Protein | 1 Calcium | 1 Iron | 1 Zinc | 1 Carbos | 1 Hp Up | 1 Power Bracer | 16 Power Belt | 16 Power Lens | 16 Power Band | 16 Power Anklet | 16 Power Weight | 16 Toxic Orb | 16 Flame Orb | 16 White Herb | 32 Power Herb | 32 BrightPowder | 48 Choice Band | 48 Focus Band | 48 Scope Lens | 48 Muscle Band | 48 Focus Sash | 48 Choice Scarf | 48 Razor Claw | 48 Razor Fang | 48 Rare Candy | 48 The woman on the right will exchange BP for various TMs: --------------------------------- TM No. | Name | BP Cost --------------------------------- 06 | Toxic | 32 73 | Thunder Wave | 32 61 | Will-O-Wisp | 32 45 | Attract | 32 40 | Aerial Ace | 40 31 | Brick Break | 40 08 | Bulk Up | 48 04 | Calm Mind | 48 81 | X-Scissor | 64 30 | Shadow Ball | 64 53 | Energy Ball | 64 36 | Sludge Bomb | 80 59 | Dragon Pulse | 80 71 | Stone Edge | 80 26 | Earthquake | 80 =============================================================================== 6.40 - The fastest way to obtain BP. =============================================================================== The quickest, easiest way to obtain BP is to just win against the first 3 rows of trainers in the Single Battle Tower. You will get 3 BP for clearing the first and second rows, and 20 BP for beating the Tower Tycoon. This will make a total of 26 BP. After the 21st battle, the difficulty will be greatly increased, so it is far more productive to just quit against the 22nd trainer, and beat the first 3 rows again. =============================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +++++++++++++ 7.0 - Tower Tycoon +++++++++++++ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== =============================================================================== 7.10 - Who is he? (SPOILERS, minor) =============================================================================== The Tower Tycoon is called Palmer, and is actually your Rival's father. You can only fight him in the Single Battle Tower (NOT in Double, Multi or Wi-Fi). You always fight him on your 21st fight and on your 49th fight. Beating him nets you 20 BP. After beating him the first time, the Pokemon that took part in the battle will receive an Ability Ribbon. After beating him the second time, the Pokemon that took part in the battle will receive the "Great Ability" Ribbon. You get a Silver Trophy for 50 consecutive wins. =============================================================================== 7.20 - His Pokemon =============================================================================== Keep in mind that the Pokemon that he starts off with is determined randomly. At first, I thought it was based on which would screw up your lead the most. However, after a few battles where I have used the same leads against him, this seems not to be the case. The first time you fight Palmer, he uses the following Pokemon: Milotic @ Salac Berry Timid; EV Trained in Defence and Speed Marvel Scale ~ Hypnosis ~ Hydro Pump ~ Dragon Pulse ~ Recover Rhyperior @ Expert Belt Quiet; EV trained in Attack and Special Attack ~ Flamethrower ~ Ice Beam ~ Thunderbolt ~ Rock Wrecker Dragonite @ Wide Lens Adamant; EV trained in Attack and HP ~ Stone Edge ~ Dragon Rush ~ Aqua Tail ~ Iron Tail The second time you fight Palmer, he uses the following Pokemon: Heatran@ Brightpowder Quiet; EV trained in Special Attack, HP, and Attack ~ Explosion ~ Magma Storm ~ Dark Pulse ~ Flash Cannon Cresselia @ Leftovers Bold; EV trained in HP and Defense ~ Calm Mind ~ Moonlight ~ Psychic ~ Shadow Ball Regigigas @ Chople Berry (Reduces the power of a Fighting move) Adamant; EV trained in HP and Attack ~ Crush Grip ~ Ice Punch ~ Stone Edge ~ Brick Break ***Information obtained from*** ***http://mewn.psupedia.info/Pokemon/BTMovesets.htm*** =============================================================================== 7.30 - Strategies to beat him =============================================================================== In this section, I'll include various strategies to beat Palmer the first time. I've decided against including specific ways to beat him the second time, as there is no benefit to specifically aiming to get past this point. After the 21st fight, you should be aiming for 100 wins. If your team has trouble with Palmer the second time, then you're going to struggle getting much further. ******************************************************************************* My Own ******************************************************************************* Metagross @ Lum Berry Adamant; 252 Atk, 172 HP, 86 Spd Clear Body ~ Meteor Mash ~ Earthquake ~ Bullet Punch ~ Explosion Starmie @ Life Orb Timid, 252 SpAtk / 252 Spd / 6 HP (Timid nature is REALLY IMPORTANT, to outrun the Milotic) Natural Cure ~ Surf ~ Thunderbolt ~ Ice Beam ~ Psychic Blissey @ Leftovers Bold, 252 HP / 252 Def / 6 SpAtk Natural Cure ~ Thunderbolt ~ Calm Mind ~ Softboiled ~ Thunder Wave Here's the plan: If he leads with Milotic, you've won already. Have Metagross use Explosion, which will kill Milotic. Send out Starmie and sweep Dragonite and Rhyperior. Easy Peasy. If he leads with anything else, it's slightly harder. Meteor Mash whoever he starts with, which will 2HKO. If Milotic is the second Poke, Explode and have Starmie sweep.. If not, kill the second Pokemon, again using Meteor Mash, then try and Explode against Milotic. However, if Milotic kills Metagross, send out Blissey and prepare for a stall war. Blissey wins easily against Milotic, it just takes a while. Thunder Wave first, Calm Mind a few times, then kill it with Thunderbolt. Heal with Softboiled as necessary. You will take hardly any damage from it's attacks, which is also why Hypnosis isn't a problem. Even after Milotic's Salac Berry activates, Blissey is still faster, due to Thunder Wave. ******************************************************************************* Credit to tristan_cow ******************************************************************************* Using the following team: Garchomp @ Choice Band Jolly; 252 Atk, 252 Spd; 6 HP Sand Veil ~ Outrage ~ Earthquake ~ Aerial Ace ~ Fire Fang Tyranitar @ Focus Sash Adamant; 252 Atk, 160 Spd, 92 Def, 6 HP Sandstorm ~ Dragon Dance ~ Crunch ~ Stone Edge ~ Earthquake Milotic @ Leftovers Bold; 252 SpD, 160 SpA, 96 Def Marvel Scale ~ Surf ~ Ice Beam ~ Recover ~ Mirror Coat So for the tower tycoon start off with Garchomp. If he starts off with Milotic (his most annoying pokemon) you've won already. Use Outrage, it'll probably activate Milotic's Salac Berry. This is ok, my garchomp withstood 2 dragon pulses from M ilotic. No matter what he uses next, switch to Milotic. Surf will take out Rhyperior and Ice Beam will take out Dragonite. Use Tyranitar as back up. (If you want to submit your own, please feel free. See the Contact section below) =============================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +++++++++++++ 8.0 - Designing a Singles BT team +++++++++++++ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== Here it is. The part of the FAQ that will (hopefully) be of most use to everyone struggling to get 100 wins. When making a Battle Tower team, it is important to remember that both you and your opponent only have 3 Pokemon. There is actually quite a lot to counter in the Battle Tower, and to do it with just 3 Pokemon can be daunting. Here, I'm going to list various things to consider when making your team. You don't neccessarily need everything, and some things are certainly more important than others. =============================================================================== 8.10 - A way to deal with Double Team (DT) =============================================================================== This move is very common even in the early stages of the Tower. After just 1 Double Team, your opponent will be much harder to hit. Shuckle is a fine example of how annoying this can be: Shuckle @ Brightpowder - Double Team - Power Trick - Stone Edge - Earthquake Damn near impossible to kill, unless you're prepared. The best ways to deal with it are as follows: - Haze - Resets all stats to their original. In other words, your opponent can DT 6 times, and Haze makes it as if they hadn't even done it once. Good examples include Gengar, Crobat and Weezing. - 100% accurate moves, e.g. Aerial Ace, Shock Wave, Swift - your opponent can DT all he wants, but the accuracy of these moves is unaffected. They always hit, unless your opponent has used Fly, Protect, Dig, etc. Good examples - almost any Pokemon can learn at least 1 via TM, but an especially good one is Salamence with Aerial Ace. - Taunt - your opponent can only use attacking moves. Most DT Pokemon don't have any attacking moves, so if you use this they will just Struggle themselves to death, whilst you stat up, preparing to sweep the rest of their team. Good examples - again, a lot of Pokemon can learn it via TM, but especially good are Gyrados or Infernape. - Roar / Whirlwind - always goes last, but forces your opponent to switch. Also known as PHazing (Pseudo Hazing). To be honest, I wouldn't rely on this one. Unlike the other counters, these moves are affected by accuracy / evasion. Therefore, if your opponent DTs just once, there is a chance that Roar / Whirlwind won't hit. Furthermore, if your opponent is down to his last Pokemon, PHazing moves don't work. Like I said, don't rely on it. Good examples - a lot can learn Roar via TM. Just look at your 3 chosen Pokes and see who has room for it. - Machamp - this Pokemon deserves special mention for his ability - No Guard. This means that all his moves have 100% accuracy. The only downside is that all moves used against him also have 100% accuracy, which means that he's very susceptible to OHKO moves. - Targeting moves, e.g Mind Reader, Lock-on - These moves "target" your opponent, so that your next attack will always hit (unless your opponent switches, which very rarely happens in the Battle Tower). Good examples include Smeargle and Articuno, as they can also learn OHKO moves to take advantage of the accuracy boost. Out of all the things to watch out for, this is the most common and annoying, and yet so easy to counter. If you take one thing from this, it should be this - MAKE SURE YOU CAN COUNTER DOUBLE TEAM!! =============================================================================== 8.20 - Priority Moves =============================================================================== Priority moves are moves such as Ice Shard, Bullet Punch, etc (preferably NOT Quick Attack, as Ghosts are immune to it). They are very useful, as in later rounds almost every team will have a Focus Sasher. A good example of a Focus Sasher is Weavile: Turn 1 - Weavile used Swords Dance! (He has such a high speed, he will most likely outrun you) - *Your Pokemon* used *insert Attack here*. It's Super Effective! Enemy Weavile hung on with its Focus Sash! Turn 2 - Weavile used Ice Punch / Night Slash / Whatever! - *Insert Pokemon here* fainted! Weavile then proceeds to sweep the remainder of your team... Not very nice!! However, priority moves will guarantee that you still go first (unless they use one as well, and then it's a case of highest speed wins again) and will always do far more than the requisite 1 damage. They are also a useful way of getting rid of Endure & Berry users, such as Lucario: Turn 1 - Enemy Lucario uses Endure! (or braces itself, or whatever. Can't remember, sorry) *Your Pokemon* uses Earthquake Lucario Endured the hit! Enemy Lucario's Salac Berry activated! Turn 2 - Enemy Lucario used Close Combat / Whatever. *Your Pokemon* fainted! And again, your team is defeated one by one. Not as deadly as a Focus Sasher, but still risky. Finally, Priority moves are a good way to clear weakened Pokemon, Good examples include Weavile w/ Ice Shard, Metagross w/ Bullet Punch, etc. =============================================================================== 8.30 - A way to negate OHKO moves (such as Fissure, Guillotine, etc) =============================================================================== In the later stages, you will come across OHKO users, and it's then that the insane luck that the AI has becomes clear. My personal favourite is this one: Crawdaunt @ Quick Claw Adamant Guillotine Frustration Ancientpower Aerial Ace There have been quite a few posts concerning this guy, and how he can destroy almost any unlucky team (Thanks to Krulwarrior for giving me his entire moveset). There are a number of ways to counter this. Firstly, the Sturdy ability negates all OHKO moves. The levitate ability negates Fissure, as it is a ground type attack. Ghost types are immune to Guillotine, as it is a normal type move. Focus Sash will leave you with 1 HP after the move, allowing you to try and kill your opponent. Finally, if you have a Substitute up, that will be killed first rather than your actual Pokemon. However, there is a Pinsir with the Mold Breaker ability (negates the opponents ability) that knows a OHKO move. In this instance, Sturdy and Levitate can't save you. Just pray that luck is on your side... Or that you're faster. Pokemon with the Sturdy Ability: Geodude, Graveler, Golem, Nosepass, Aron, Lairon, Aggron, Magnemite, Magneton, Skarmory, Donphan, Onix, Sudowoodo, Pineco, Forretress, Steelix, Shuckle, Shieldon, Bastiodon, Bonsly, Magnezone =============================================================================== 8.40 - A way to deal with Status effects =============================================================================== When your Pokemon is still asleep FOUR turns after it had Hypnosis used against it, you'll realise how much you need this. Also, remember that Battle Tower doesn't use Sleep Cause. Counters: - Lum Berry - cures any Status effect, once. Giving this to one of your Pokemon will often prove beneficial, especially on slower sweepers like Metagross or Tyranitar, allowing them to 2HKO your opponent's status user. - Rest Talker - A Pokemon who knows Rest (fully restores HP, cures Status, sleep for 2 turns), Sleep Talk (chooses a random move to use when asleep) and, typically, 2 attack moves. Negates pretty much any status effect apart from freeze (which is VERY uncommon). Also, if your Pokemon is "fully paralysed" or "hurts itself in it's confusion," then Rest won't do anything that turn. - Guts Ability - provides a Pokemon with a 1.5x boost to attack when inflicted with a status. A good example of the previous 2 points is Heracross: Heracross @ Leftovers Guts - Rest - Sleep Talk - Megahorn - Close Combat / Stone Edge / Earthquake =============================================================================== 8.50 - A way to deal damage!! =============================================================================== Yep, the big one. You can follow all the above points, but without a fast sweeper (I'd recommend 2) you'll never get anywhere, and even if you do win, battles will really drag. It is beneficial to have a Physical Sweeper and a Special Sweeper. An example of a Pokemon who gets the job done is as follows (note - it is VERY cheap, haha...) Latios @ Choice Specs Timid / Modest 252 SpAtk / 252 Speed / 6 HP Levitate - Draco Meteor - Thunderbolt - Ice Beam - Earthquake (don't say WTF?? It is purely to take out Magnezone, who otherwise completely resists this set) =============================================================================== 8.60 - Don't have the same types =============================================================================== Basically, don't have 3 Pokemon who are all one-shotted by an Ice Beam, for example. Metagross, Tyranitar & Heatran are all very good Pokemon, but do not make a good team, as they are all taken out by both Earthquake and Fighting moves, which are very common. Also, don't have 3 Special Sweepers, or 3 Physical Sweepers. You will not be a happy bunny when either Blissey or Skarmory shows up. =============================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +++++++++++++ 9.0 - Examples of Teams for the Singles BT +++++++++++++ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== In this section, as you may guess, I'm going to give examples of different teams for the Single Battle Tower. ******************************************************************************* Team Rocket Elite ******************************************************************************* The following team was designed by Team Rocket Elite, not by me. Full credit goes to him for designing a very good team, and thanks for letting me use it in this FAQ: Metagross @ Choice Band Adamant; 100 HP, 252 Atk, 16SpD, 142 Spd Clear Body ~ Earthquake ~ ThunderPunch (Emerald Move Tutor only) ~ Meteor Mash ~ Ice Punch (Emerald Move Tutor only) Gengar @ Focus Sash Timid; 252 SpA, 252 Spd, 6 HP Levitate ~ Thunderbolt ~ Counter (Emerald Move Tutor only) ~ Sludge Bomb ~ Destiny Bond Blissey @ Leftovers Bold; 252 HP, 252 Def, 6SpD Natural Cure ~ Seismic Toss (Emerald Move Tutor only) ~ Counter ~ Aromatherapy ~ Softboiled "Died Battle 177. Pokemon this team has troubles with include Infernape, Blaziken, Tyranitar and Hippowdon." ******************************************************************************* mario3620 ******************************************************************************* The following team was designed by mario3620. Credit goes to him, and thanks for letting me include it the FAQ: Starmie @ Wise Glasses Modest; 252 SpA, 252 Spd, 6 HP Natural Cure ~ Ice Beam ~ Thunderbolt ~ Surf ~ Recover Surprisingly durable, it can one-hit pretty much the entire battle tower besides some electric and grass types, and recover off the damage. Whenever you see an electric type, switch to: Electivire @ Expert Belt Lonely; 198 Atk, 124SpA, 176Spd Motor Drive ~ Thunderbolt ~ Earthquake ~ Cross Chop ~ Ice Punch After switching into an electric type, and getting motor drive, you will outspeed... everything. Earthquake the electric if it doesn't levitate, then fight with this until you beat the trainer or it dies. If you do die, switch back to Starmie unless it is a grass or water type, in which case you should switch to: Salamence @ Life Orb Adamant; 252 Atk, 252 Spd, 6 HP Intimidate ~ Dragon Dance ~ Fire Fang ~ Earthquake ~ Dragon Claw This is sitting in the back of the party. It isn't used as much as Starmie or Electivire, it just waits for opportunities. Good for taking out grass types that you aren't sure if you can one-hit with starmie or electivire w/ ice attacks. If you see a poke that you think you can switch in Salamence on, and you want to, do so. Even better, if you see one you think you can switch in on, and DD, and you are successful, you are almost guaranteed a win, unless the Life Orb kills you. Reached 100+ Battles. ******************************************************************************* tristan_cow ******************************************************************************* Garchomp @ Choice Band Jolly; 252 Atk, 252 Spd; 6 HP Sand Veil ~ Outrage ~ Earthquake ~ Fire Fang/Aerial Ace/Crunch ~ Fire Fang/Aerial Ace/Crunch Outrage for major STAB. Not much will survive this that doesn't resist a STABed Outrage from Garchomp. Earthquake, again for major STAB. The other two are basically fillers for more of a variety of types. Start off with outrage, switch when confused and then switch back to garchomp when your other pokemon faints. Rinse, slather, repeat. Tyranitar @ Focus Sash Adamant; 252 Atk, 160 Spd, 92 Def, 6 HP Sandstorm ~ Dragon Dance ~ Crunch ~ Stone Edge/Rock Slide ~ Earthquake I personally like stone edge but, it's your choice. Sand Stream works well with Garchomp (increases evasion) and focus sash is for those fighting types. After you are saved by focus sash against a Lucario, dragon dance then you should be able to outspeed it to get another attack in. Milotic @ Leftovers Bold; 252 SpD, 160 SpA, 96 Def Marvel Scale ~ Surf ~ Ice Beam ~ Recover ~ Mirror Coat This baby has saved me a bunch of times. It has outlasted many opponents. Leftovers neutralizes Tyranitar's sand stream. Reached 112 battles. ******************************************************************************* limonka ******************************************************************************* Staraptor @ Choice Band Jolly; 4 Hp, 252 Atk, 252 Spd ~ Brave Bird ~ U-Turn ~ Return ~ Close Combat Something that is able to hit a lot of things VERY hard. Not much survives a CB Brave bird if it's neutral or Super-effective. Fast and Strong, something that's useful in the Battle Tower. Infernape @ Life Orb Lonely; 136 Atk, 252 Spd, 135 SpAtk ~ Close Combat ~ Flare Blitz ~ Grass Knot ~ Will-o-Wisp The concept of Will-o-wisp on a Mixed sweeper may not be appealing but it saves you majority of the time when you're up against Tyranitar, Regigigas (Palmers 2nd team) etc. The physical and special stats are just about balanced, more so favoured in physical. This is very fast as well so don't expect many opponents to be faster. Grass knot enables a 2HKO on Suicune, Milotic and a OHKO on Swampert. Regice @ Leftovers Calm - 252 Hp/160 SpAtk/96 SpDef ~ Thunderbolt ~ Ice Beam ~ Rest ~ Sleep Talk Starmie is possibly the only thing that troubles this team in a severe manner, but it's also something that can't beat Regice one on one. BoltBeam basically handles most types, neutral and stuff. Also great against Milotic in Palmers first team. Reached 173 battles ******************************************************************************* Benjamin culley ******************************************************************************* Gengar @ Focus Sash Timid - 252SpAtk/252Spd/6HP ~ Shadow ball ~ Thunderbolt ~ Focus blast ~ Destiny bond This can 2hko most Pokemon, then outspeed and destiny bond the next Slaking @Choice Band Adamant - 252Atk/252Spd/6HP ~ Giga impact ~ Earthquake ~ Faint attack ~ Fire blast(never used) Comes in after Gengar and typically takes out the final Pokemon in 1 hit with giga impact Creselia @ Leftovers Bold - 252HP/252Def/6HP ~ Calm mind ~ Reflect ~ Ice beam ~ Rest Rest is for status and healing, this thing can tank most Pokemon. This team really only had difficulty with Weaville. Reached 100+ wins ******************************************************************************* Shinywailord ******************************************************************************* Umbreon @ Leftovers Ability: Synchronize Bold - 252Def/252SpDef/6HP ~ Toxic ~ Protect ~ Moonlight ~ Dark Pulse This one is the wall. Umbreon should always be your lead. If you face a Steel or Poison, switch, otherwise use Toxic. Protect allows toxic and leftovers to kick in. Moonlight is a useful healing move. Dark Pulse is when you don't need to heal. Umbreon is a good choice due to the fact that it's nearly impossible to one shot without using OHKO moves. Starmie @ Wise Glasses Ability: Natural Cure Modest - 252SpAt/252Spd/6 HP ~ Surf ~ Ice Beam ~ Thunderbolt ~ Recover The special sweeper. Surf gets STAB,and Thunderbolt and Ice Beam hit almost everything else for at least neutral damage. Recover is something you won't use often but when Starmie's in trouble you'll be thankful you have it. Machamp @ Muscle Band Ability: No Guard Adamant - 252Atk/252Spd/6 HP ~ Dynamicpunch ~ Stone Edge ~ Earthquake ~ Swords Dance The physical sweeper. Machamp is the #1 Pokemon when you get a nasty DTer. Dynamicpunch has STAB and a 100% chance of inflicting confusion, and with No Guard, always hits. Earthquake and Stone Edge have good type coverage for whatever else is coming Machamp's way. After a Swords Dance no one can stop him easily. Reached 116 battles in a row. Has a weakness towards OHKO moves. ******************************************************************************* dark_excal ******************************************************************************* Weaville @ Focus Sash Adamant - 252Atk/252Spd/6HP Pressure ~ Swords Dance ~ Night Slash ~ Ice Punch ~ Brick Break Even though he has a focus sash and swords dance, it's not always the first move. With that speed, it can often just OHKO things, though it'll take a bit of testing, poking around (and losing, unfortunately) before knowing which is which. Takes care of a LOT of things, most battles just involve a single swords dance and the entire opponent's team keeling over. Gengar @ Choice Specs Modest - 252SpAtk/252Spd/6HP Levitate ~ Shadow Ball ~ Psychic ~ Sludge Bomb ~ Thunderbolt Main purpose is actually to absorb a mach punch, which is the bane of (this) Weaville, hence Psychic, this slot actually used to have an Alakazam, but too many close shaves have convinced me to change, especially since Gengar takes no damage from the two types I switch it in on Garchomp @ Life Orb Lonely; 180Atk, 118Sp.Atk, 212Spd Sand Veil ~Crunch/Stone Edge (Up to you) ~Dragon Claw ~Flamethrower ~Earthquake Main purpose is to absorb the nasty electric attacks and thunder wave, as well as switching into fire types and such, also sandstreamers, and to a lesser extent sandstorm. Crunch or Stone Edge is really just a filler move, since both Weaville and Gengar are capable of hitting for super effective damage against the same things. The funny thing, flamethrower, is actually there just for Scizor. The Ev's are completely experimental, if you want, you can swap flamethrower for fire fang, make him adamant, and do the traditional 252/252 split, which is what I used to have Reached 100+ wins. Pokemon to look out for include a Dusknoir lead, who's Trick Room can be very painful, and anything with mach punch. Something that has been an issue in the past is also Togetic, who has extremespeed, but a straight up ice punch will be enough to deal with it, and otherwise, switch to gengar. Apart from that, basically any walls that you encounter. I've slowly managed to work out which pokemon Weaville can take, and which can't. ******************************************************************************* Victor Amarante ******************************************************************************* Salamence @ Life Orb Modest - 252SpAtk/252Spd/6HP ~ Draco Meteor ~ Flamethrower ~ Hydro Pump ~ Dragon Pulse With Flamethrower and Hydro Pump it can take down a lot of things easily, also it has a huge SpAtk, so it's going to be easy to bring down what doesn't take a supper effective from it. Dragon Pulse will dammage everything, and also has STAB, Draco Meteor is to bring down a strong opponent in a single hit. Tyranitar @ Leftovers Adamant - 252Atk/196Spd/60HP ~ Crunch ~ Stone Edge ~ Earthquake ~ Focus Punch Just your physical sweeper. It can bring down nearly everything with a single hit. The only problem is if grass or water types shows up. If they do, just bring in... Azelf @ Wise Glasses Timid - 252SpAtk/252Spd/6HP ~ Psychic ~ Flamethrower ~ Grass Knot ~ Nastly Plot The most dangerous special sweeper out there IMO. Being able to use Nastly Plot and then a STABed Psychic is enough to destroy most of the teams that exists on the Battle Tower. Flamethrower takes care of Steel Type, Grass and Ice, Grass Knot are for water, ground, rocks and mainly, Rhyperiors and Tyranitars. A Nasty Plotted Azelf can easily take care of a Blissey with just a couple of Psychics. Reached 163 battles in a row ******************************************************************************* rohin dubey ******************************************************************************* Garchomp @ Choice Band/Choice Scarf Jolly - 252Atk/252Spd/6 HP ~ Outrage ~ Earthquake ~ Stone Edge ~ Crunch Starmie @ Life Orb Modest - 252SpAtk/252Spd/6 HP ~ Psychic ~ Thunderbolt ~ Ice Beam ~ Surf Metagross @ leftovers Adamant - 252Att/128HP/56Def/74SpDef ~ Hammer arm ~ Meteor mash ~ Bullet punch ~ Earthquake Reached 105 battles, had problems with Abomasnow and similar pokemon =============================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +++++++++++++ 10.0 - Links +++++++++++++ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== - http://mewn.psupedia.info/Pokemon/BTMovesets.htm A list of every Pokemon that you will face, with their moves and items - http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=29425 Examples of successful teams, constantly updated. Why not?" I'm afraid that, much like when Battling with WiFi, new Pokemon that you've seen in the Battle Tower aren't registered on your Pokedex. - "I've seen you recommend X Pokemon with Y move. However, mine won't learn it. Why not?" This alludes to Gengar with Counter, Metagross with Thunderpunch, etc. I've updated the FAQ to show how you get them. They are nearly all taught by the Move Tutors in Pokemon Emerald/Fire Red/Leaf Green, then exported to Diamond/Pearl. Check the R/S/E/FR/LG Pokedex on Serebii.net for more details. - "How do I get X move onto Y Pokemon?" This falls under "Bad Emails," and is simple enough to find out. Either check Serebii.net, use the Search function on Gamefaqs, or make a topic on Gamefaqs. These are all much faster than waiting for an email response from me. - "Can't you just turn off the power if you're about to lose?" Nope. The game knows that you didn't finish the full set of seven, so it will just finish your winning streak, and you'll have to start over. Any further questions? The next section's for you... - "What are those numbers next to the natures of the Pokemon? What are EVs?" I've had a lot of these emails. The numbers next to the natures of the Pokemon are the EVs that I suggest you train them in (e.g. Adamant - 252Atk/252Spd/6HP means 252 EVs in attack, 252 EVs in speed, 6 in HP). For specific info on EVs, I recommend reading weremidget's EV sticky on the Gamefaqs Pokemon Diamond board: http://www.gamefaqs.com/boards/genmessage.php?board=925601&topic=38648412 Any more specific questions should be asked on gamefaqs boards. - "How important are natures/EVs/IVs in the Battle Tower?" IVs are not overally important when just trying to get 100 wins (although if you're aiming higher, your Pokemon will need all the survivability they can get). However, natures are very useful, as they provide a 10% boost to the stat of your choosing, and EVs allow you to tailor your Pokemon. =============================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +++++++++++++ 12.0 - Contacting Me +++++++++++++ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== When emailing me, please put something in the Subject box, like "Pokemon" or "Battle Tower FAQ." If anyone would like to contribute anything regarding this, you will receive full credit. Any good examples of teams for the BT that I receive. Please note that I no longer want teams to beat Palmer the second time. If you are going to suggest a new team, please make sure a similar team hasn't already been included. Please include EVs, natures, a general strategy, how far the team reached and a name to credit you with. If you lay it out in the same way as this guide, you'll become my new favourite person and I'll be far more likely to add it quickly. =============================================================================== ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ +++++++++++++ 14.0 Legal Mambo - Jumbo +++++++++++++ ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ =============================================================================== Pokemon is Copyright to Nintendo and Game Freak This guide is the intellectual property of me, CKY_Tribal.
