The Pokemon Gold/Silver walkthrough. Can't be prouder...heh, just kidding. For some reason, everyone says they hate Pokemon. And for some reason, when I look at the sell marks, Pokemon makes the top numbers on the list. Kind of funny. I'll definitely go through with you once again once Pokemon Ruby/Sapphire comes out, so be sure to check that walkthrough later. Now, time to start the real thing. Sometimes, however, they can be a bit confusing so I made this section to explain each main one. ---Starting Menu _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ New Game | Option | _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | 1.New Game-As the name implies, this starts a new game. Not much to say except that if you save your new game, you will delete your old one. 2.Option-This will bring you to the options screen. Here you can set the Text Speed, Battle Scene, Battle Style, Frame Type and a lot more stuff. Just set the text speed to Fast. ---Main Menu This is the menu that you get by Pressing Start while playing the game. _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ |PokeDEX | |PokeMON | |Pack | |PokeGEAR | |[Your Name] | |Save | |Option | |Exit | | | |_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ | 1.PokeDEX-As the name suggests, this is the famous Pokedex. It's a bit different from the old one but basically the same. It got some nice new features like Pokemon search that you could do by pressing the Start button and choosing the Pokemon types. It pretty useful at times. Like before, it shows info on the Pokemon you've seen or caught. 2.PokeMON-This shows all the Pokemon that you have with you, their level, their HP, and a little icon in the corner of their type icon indicates whether or not the Pokemon is carrying something. 3.Pack-Unlike the Red/Blue version packs, this pack got a new feature called pockets. The pack is split into 4 of them. They are the Item Pocket, the TM pocket, the Key Item Pocket, and the Ball Pocket. The item pocket carries normal, disposable items that use can use, throw away, or attach to your Pokemon. The TM pocket carries TMs and HMs to teach Pokemon new moves. The key item pocket carries all the indesposable, helpful stuff such as a Bicycle or an Itemfinder. And the ball pocket carries Pokeballs to catch Pokemon with. 4.PokeGEAR-This is a very useful new feature from Gold/Silver. At the beginning it only shows what day of the week it is, time, and a new accessory, the phone which allows you to call and get called by other trainers. It's useless at the beginning because it only got your Mom's number. As you progress in the game, you will gain a map and a radio card for your Pokegear. 5.[Your Name]-Obviously, your name goes here. If you enter it, you will see how much money you have and how many badges you have. You will also see how much time you've played and your ID number. Not much to do here. 6.Save-This is obviously lets you save. Uh...nothing else to add. 7.Option-This is the same thing as the start menu option. 8.Exit-Cancel the Main Menu. *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=* IV.General Tips *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= -+-Try to save every ten minutes or before a major battle. You never know if you're going to win or capture a rare Pokemon, so saving can often help. -+-If your Pokemon goes below half HP, it's a good idea to use restorative items, such as Max Potion, MooMoo Milk, or even potions at lower levels to keep your HP up. Keep in mind that if you "white out"(die), you will lose half of your money and your Pokemon will not like you anymore. -+-Using the most powerful moves isn't always the best way to go. Using Sacred Fire against a Magcargo is not a smart idea. However, using an attack as weak as a Water Gun, you can probably knock it out in one hit, as Magcargo is Fire/Rock I believe. -+-Keep your Power Points or PPs up. If you run out of moves, you're toast. Most of the time, the stronger the move, the less PPs it has, so I recommend for you to sometimes use weaker moves first before unloading with Fire Blasts and Sacred Fires. -+-Not only can you heal outside of battle, you can heal inside also. If the situation looks really tough and your Pokemon is getting beat, either use restorative items to heal or switch Pokemon. -+-Equiping your Pokemon with items can help you win a hard battle. Giving Charcoal to a Typhlosion may just be what you need to win a battle. -+-Don't make all-out-attack Pokemon. Use a lot of support moves and combos such as Rain Dance and Thunder, or a simple Sunny Day and Solarbeam. For a whole list, check out the Combos Section. -+-Always save before a Gym Leader. Sometimes you may mess up and wind up losing. -+-In case you're wondering, there is no fastest way to train a Pokemon. Of course, there is Gameshark, but I wouldn't recommend that as it's probably going to erase your game. If you care about stats and not just raising Pokemon for the Pokedex, don't use the switching Pokemon thing, because you will get lower stats that way. Just train in an area where you got a few levels advantage or on Pokemon that you have a type advantage over. -+-In the Pokedex, I've included all the maximum stats. If you get a shiny Pokemon you might think that it can get maximum stats faster, but that is not true. Instead, shiny Pokemon CANNOT achieve maximum stats, therefore rendering themselves totally useless. -+-And last, but definitely not least, use strategy when you battle. Try to get a type advantage and use STAB(Same Type Attack Bonus). That could win you a hard fight. -+-Keep in mind that some moves always go first. They are Quick Attack, Mach Punch, and Extremespeed. Be careful or else you might get attacked when you don't expect it and get KO'ed. -+-If the Pokemon show up in different order than the walkthrough specifies, please don't get confused or anything. In Gold/Silver the next Pokemon is totally random so don't blame me. -+-Some Pokemon appear only at certain times. This is the fancy minigraph for it. | |-----------------------------------------| | | |+---------------TIME CHART--------------+| | 0---------|| Morning | Day | Night ||--------0 | || 4AM-9:59AM |10AM-5:59PM |6PM-3:59AM || | | |+---------------------------------------+| | | |-----------------------------------------| | *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=* V.Walkthrough *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= 1.New Bark Town *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= Items- PokeGEAR Potion Pokemon- Chikorita OR Totodile OR Cyndaquil As you start the game, you will be greeted by the starting menu. Go to the options menu and select Fast from the text speed and cancel. Now click the New game option. At first, you will be greeted by a black screen. A voice will ask you to set the time. Depending on what time you set, the voice says something different such as "I overslept!" and such. The color will come to the screen and you will see that the voice if really Prof. Oak. He will give his normal speech and notice that instead of a Pikachu, a picture of Marill, it's popularity rival, will show up. After a little bit of Prof. Oak talking, you will get to set your name. For the sake of the guide, I'll use Gold. Then you will be shrunk and sent to your new room. Take time clicking everything and checking out the computer. Although it does not have a Potion in it like the previous versions, it's still worth looking around. Next to the computer is a radio. Click it to hear Prof. Oak's Pokemon Talk. It changes the music in your room until you leave. However, before you leave check out the map by the stairs. It's the new Johto world. Quite different from the Red/Blue versions eh? OK, time to go downstairs. You will be greeted by your mom and she will tell you that the new professor, Prof. Elm, is looking for you. After that, she hands you your Pokegear and explains how to use the phone part of it. If you take a look at the Main Menu, you will notice that you're missing the Pokedex option and the Pokemon option. You will get them a bit later. Go outside. New Bark is not all that much different from the towns in Red/Blue versions of the game, but it's still nice. Walk around, talk to the people outside and inside houses to find out that Prof. Elm is a pretty respected guy. The girl in the bottom-left corner of the town says that Prof. Elm discovered pre-evolutions (covered later) of some Pokemon. Now go to Elm's lab. Since it's the biggest building in New Bark, it shouldn't be hard to spot. It's right next to your house. Go inside and talk to Prof.Elm. He will tell you about Mr.Pokemon and his discoveries and ask you to go get his newest discovery. Since he can't come with you, he offers you 1 of 3 Pokemon. They are: 1.Chikorita-It's the Pokemon on the right side of the table. It's pretty rare to meet a Pokemon that's pure grass type without half poison, but this is one of them. It gives you a chance against psychic Pokemon, which are strong against poison types. Aside from that, Chikorita learns a strong damaging attack at level 8 I believe, which is Razor Leaf. But choose Chikorita only if you think you can handle it because Chikorita will get wiped in the first 2 gyms. Other than that, it's a decent Pokemon, but definitely not the best. That honor belongs to Cyndaquil, in my opinion. 2.Totodile- Very strong in the beginning with its Scratch attack, which is generally better then Tackle. One problem with it is its Special Attack points are not exactly the highest. It's still pretty good, but it's not the best. Water attacks will be slightly weaker because of this. 3.Cyndaquil-Well, this is my favorite of the 3. With its high Special Attack points, it will be extremely powerful with its fire attacks. His physical Attack stack is not that high, but it's decent to provide serious offence until you get fire attacks. Most gyms are also weak to this type. The only drawback I see in him is that he learns his first fire attack at level 12, but hey, you gotta make sacrifices to get that kinda strength. Personally I'll recommend Cyndaquil, but it'll your choice. Only choose Chikorita if you are really advanced and think that you can take the first 2 gyms on without too many problems. After you choose your Pokemon, Elm will give you his phone number. When you try to get out of the laboratory, the Prof.Elm's aide will give you a Potion. It may yet be very helpful. If you noticed, your chosen Pokemon is carrying an item. It's a berry, so when your HP goes to yellow, this item will recover 10 HPs. It may seem like a lot now, but when you start training and getting levels, it won't seem like a lot. However for now, be content with it. Leave the lab and head west through the path. You are now on Route 29. *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= 2.ROUTE 29 *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= Items- Potion Berry Pokemon- Gold- Silver- Sentret (Morning, Day) Sentret (Morning, Day) Pidgey (Morning, Day) Pidgey (Morning, Day) Rattata (Morning, Day, Night) Rattata (Morning, Day, Night) Hoothoot (Night) Hoothoot (Night) Whatever your starter is, build it to level 7 or 8. It will help you a lot soon. If you run low on HPs, you can always run to Elm's lab and get a heal from the machine to his left. By the time you're 7-8, you should have no problems with low HP and weak attacks. So to get the potion, find the man next to New Bark. He's in the grass. Go down and left a bit until there is a way to go up. Go up till you can't anymore, then go a few steps to the right and up again. Walk until you hit a dead end and turn right. There should be a Pokeball lying on the ground. Pick it up. It's a Potion. OK, backtrack to the man in the grass. Get a heal if you need from Elm's lab and walk west. In a minute or so of walking and fighting, you should see a man with a little tree thing behind him surrounded loosely by ledges. Walk in there and click the tree. You will find a Berry. There is no need for you to equip it since you are so near the Cherrygrove Pokemon Center. Jump over the ledge and you will see a white path leading west. Go that way and you will enter Cherrygrove City. *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= 3.CHERRYGROVE CITY *=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*=*= Items- Map Card Pokemon- None PokeMART Prices- Pokeball -200(After you go to New Bark and talk to Prof. Elm) Potion -300 Antidote -100 Parlyz Heal-200 Awakening -250 Talk to the man who stands by the entrance and say YES when he offers to give you a tour. After he's done, he will give a MAP CARD for your Pokegear. Now you can view the Johto map from anywhere in the world. If you need to heal, visit the Pokemon Center. Also, visit the Pokemart to buy an Antidote or 2. They don't sell Pokeballs here until after you talk to Mr.Pokemon and go back to Elm. Not much to do here but walk around and talk to people. Pick a Berry off the tree and go inside the house. Talk to the man sitting at the table to get another Berry. Now get out of the house and keep going up. You will meet a crossroads. To the left, 2 trainers are battling, so you are unable to go through. Choose the right way and you'll see a sign that says Mr.Pokemon's house is that way. Keep walking up through the grass and take the opportunity to get another level or 2. By the time you reach Mr.Pokemon's level, try to keep you starter at least at level 9, preferably 10. There won't be any need to use your items to heal because when you go to Mr.Pokemon he'll give you a heal. So go inside the house and Mr.Pokemon will give you the Mystery Egg to bring back to Prof. Elm. Then, Prof.Oak comes from the computer and gives you your Pokedex. He then leaves to another city called Goldenrod. Before you leave, Mr.Pokemon will heal you. When you leave the house, Prof. Elm will call you and tell you to come to his lab right away. Before you hurry away though, pick the tree next to Mr.Pokemon's house for a Psncureberry. OK, now backtrack back to Cherrygrove and get a heal if you need. As you try to go east out of Cherrygrove, your new rival shows up and requests a Pokemon battle. -------------------------BATTLE------------------------- NAME: ??? POKEMON:One of the starting Pokemon who has an advantage against yours. It's at level 5. PRIZE: $300 SPECIAL:None Nothing to this fight. You probably don't have any special attacks unless you're using Chikorita, so pound him with Tackles or Scratches, depending on your Pokemon. If you are using Chikorita, don't use Razor Leaf as Cyndaquil if resistant to it. After you beat him, he runs off. --------------------------------------------------------------- Now continue back to New Bark town. Nothing else to do now but leave, but before you do, the aide gives you 5 Pokeballs. When you leave New Bark, the guy in the grass will come up and teach you how to catch Pokemon. The only important Pokemon here are Geodude and Spearow. Catch them both as they will both be a tremendous aid in Violet City, which is the city with the first badge. Train both of them to the level of your starter, which should be about 10 by now. Spare the time to get Geodude up to level 11 though, because it's Rock Throw will be very helpful up ahead. Instead, go back in the grass and catch yourself 2 Bellsprouts. You'll need 1 for an ingame trade. When you caught them, go next to the cave and pick up the Antidote. Head west for another wierd tree and pick a Bitter Berry off it. Look at the Berry Guide to see what it does or just read the description in the game. This is a good way to get a low-level Pokemon. However, once it hits level 10, you can't exactly control it until you get a few badges. At this point, your team should look like this: Starter -Level 13 Spearow -Level 13 Geodude -Level 13 (Ledyba or Spinarak)-Level 10 Gastly -Level 7 Egg If it's not, train up a bit. If it's more, that's good. Keep your Pokemon at a level that they don't kill wild Pokemon in 1 hit. If you're going Pokemon hunting, use Gastly to make them go to sleep and use your Bug or something else to wipe them within an inch of life. Go south of the Pokemon Center to pick up a Przcureberry and go back up. Now that we're done with Violet City, let's go west to the Ruins of Alph! If you complete the puzzle but it doesn't work, try re-arranging either the eyes or the 2 middle pieces from the bottom row. When it works, you'll hear a ring and the floor will collapse under you. Walk around and soon you'll fight a Unown. It's only attack is Hidden Power. Catch 3 of these Pokemon and go up the ladder. It's a Miracle Seed, which increases grass-type Pokemon attack strength. If you have Chikorita or Bellsprout with you, equip it to them. If you don't save it till later. Keep walking down into the grass. Put you Gastly forward and walk around. Don't fight the trainer just yet. If you have time, don't forget to catch Zubat and Wooper at night. Wooper's evolution later on will be very useful. Here, catch a Mareep and a Hoppip using Gastly's Hypnosis and go put Mareep in your team. This is practically the only good electric Pokemon you get until you go back to Kanto, the old world. Train up the Mareep till about Level 10 or so. It shouldn't be too difficult and then battle the trainer. -------------------------BATTLE------------------------- NAME: Youngster Albert POKEMON: Level 6 Rattata -72 EXP Level 8 Zubat -91 EXP PRIZE: $128 SPECIAL:None Just use your starter. If it's not, check the dead end for a Great Ball. (NOTE-You can get both of these items, just not on the same day. People seem to think that they have to get one or the other.) Now go back tot he Pokemon Center and heal. Talk to the Fisher inside to receive an Old Rod. Now go back t the bridge and catch a Tentacool and a pathetic Magikarp. If you are LUCKY, like 1/150 lucky, you will catch a Qwilfish. There is an easier way to get one of these, and that's by getting Fisher Ralph's number. Walk around that side of the forest to find a Revive. It may be useful in a tight spot. Go back tot he spot where the kid used to stand and go up.
