If you get hit, you will go back to "regular" Mario. ----------- Fire Flower ----------- You can only get this if you are Super Mario. Turns Super Mario into Fiery Mario. This allows him to attack his enemies with fireballs. If you get hit, you go back to small Mario. ---- Star ---- Makes Mario invincible for a short period of time. ------------- 1-Up Mushroom ------------- Gives Mario another life. ---- Coin ---- Collect 100 of these for an extra life. ------- ? Block ------- Hit to get a random item (Coin, Mushroom, etc.). ---------- Coin Block ---------- Contains a bunch of Coins. --------- Beanstalk --------- Climb it to reach a Bonus Stage or Warp Zone. ------------------ Spring Board (Red) ------------------ Allows you to get a higher jump. If you press A on the spring at the right time, you can jump even higher. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<< CHALLENGE MODE ONLY >>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> -------- Red Coin -------- Collect 5 of these for the Red Coin Medal. --------- Yoshi Egg --------- Collect this for the Yoshi Egg Medal. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<< THE LOST LEVELS MODE ONLY >>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> --------------- Poison Mushroom --------------- Getting this will have the same effect as getting hit by an enemy. -------------------- Spring Board (Green) -------------------- Just like the red one, but this will give you a SUPER high jump! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =- 4) ORIGINAL (1985) -= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This is the same version as Super Mario Bros. for NES. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<< STAGE TIPS >>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Since I don't plan on making a full walkthrough on it, here are a couple of stage tips: 1. When making long jumps, always hold B to get a running start. 2. Use the Select button to see what enemies are ahead of you. 3. Be careful when jumping on a stage with flying Cheep-Cheeps in it. They can hit your foot in the air, causing you to fall and die. 4. Trying using Fireballs to take out the Hammer Bros. instead of jumping on their heads. 5. Search for Beanstalks in a block, they take you to Bonus Stages and Warp Zones. 6. Defeat Bowser with Fireballs to get extra points. 7. Analyze enemy patterns to see how to defeat/pass them. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<< WARP ZONE LOCATIONS >>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> This part will tell you what stage the Warp Zone is in and where it takes you. --------- Stage 1-2 --------- Warp(s): World 2, 3, & 4 --------- Stage 4-2 --------- Warp(s): World 6, 7, & 8 --------- Stage 4-2 --------- Warp(s): World 5 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =- 5) CHALLENGE -= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This mode is kinda neat. Your objective is to get the three Challenge Medals from doing things in the stages. Here are the Medals: Red Coin Medal: Get all 5 Red Coins in a stage. High Score Medal: Get a score higher than the blue one shown on the World Map. Yoshi Egg Medal: Get the Yoshi Egg in a stage. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<< CHALLENGE MODE TIPS >>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> And here are some scoring tips for Challenge Mode: 1. Having a lot of time left over can get you many points. So go through the level as fast as you can. 2. Always try to get the Yoshi Egg. It will give you 2,000 points. 3. Blocks containing a bunch of Coins also get you some points. You can also get a Red Coin from some if you hit them enough. 4. Also try to get 1-Up Mushrooms. These will get you 2,000 points. 5. When you reach the Flagpole at the end of a level (Except castle stages), always try to get the max of 5,000 points. 6. Get all the Coins in a Bonus Stage to get 10,000 points. 7. Look the Red Coin Bar at the top of the screen. Use it to see what Coins you have missed. If you collect two Red Coins, but there's a space between them, you missed one. This will give you a general idea where the Red Coin is, so this technique is very useful. 8. Try to go for the Fireworks (See the "Codes/Tricks" section to see how to get them), but don't wait too long to get them. This is more of luck when trying to get them. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<< CHALLENGE MODE ITEM LOCATIONS >>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Here's how I'll do this section: ------- World ? ------- Stage ?-? Defeating Boo with a fast time will make Boo change colors. Each time he changes his colors, he is faster. It gets easy at first, but it's much more difficult later. If you go very fast the first time, he may skip some color changes (Such as going from White to Pink). Also check out the "Codes/Tricks" section for a tip in this mode. Here are the colors the Boo can be: #1 - White #2 - Green #3 - Pink #4 - Black (He looks dark blue to me) <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<< OBSTACLES >>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ----------- 1-2-3 Block ----------- This thing has red/white sides like the Face Block. It starts out at 3 and will do a countdown. Once it reaches the end of the countdown, the block changes colors. This causes blocks to change also. Blocks with a small dot in the center will flip to spiked or the other way around. It also causes those other blocks to reappear/disappear like the Face Block would. Hitting the block will change its color and begin another countdown. ---------- Face Block ---------- This odd block has two faces (One white and the other red). If it is white, certain blocks will appear/disappear, and the same thing goes for the red side. The red side will make it harder to race so try to keep it white at all times because Boo will make a noise and switch the blocks. ------------ Spiked Block ------------ Found mostly in the later stages. This spiked block have the same effect as getting hit by an enemy, so make sure you don't die (If you die in a race, it counts as losing). ---------------- Trampoline Floor ---------------- Very awkward platform. When you land on it, press A when in the air to jump. ---- Lava ---- Not much of an obstacle, but it will cause trouble. It's just like falling into a hole, so going in it causes you to lose. ------ Bowser ------ I know he's an enemy, but he is the only enemy you see in this mode. Don't bother to attack him, just go under/jump over him. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<< STAGE TIPS >>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> --------- Stage 1-1 --------- 1. The first part is annoying because of all of the blocks that can stop you. So hit the Face Block early on to pass through it easier. 2. Be sure to hit the Face Block near the end to pass over the small tower of blocks. This will save you some time. --------- Stage 1-2 --------- 1. The top route at the beginning is slightly easier than the bottom one. 2. Right after the area mentioned above, use the blocks go up over the obstacles. If you manage to get as far as you can from there, the race is MUCH easier! 3. Use the Face Block near the end to go over the blocks instead of hitting the Face Block and using the other blocks. --------- Stage 1-3 --------- 1. Try to stay above the ground on the sections with the 1-2-3 Blocks so you won't have to worry about falling in the hole. --------- Stage 1-4 --------- 1. Do long jumps to avoid the Spiked Blocks. 2. Have the Face Blocks on the white side near the end. Without the blocks, it will be easier to fall into the lava. --------- Stage 2-1 --------- 1. Grab the Mushroom from the ? Block at the beginning to get rid of the blocks. Or select a better form at the main race screen to save some time. 2. Use the Face Blocks at the end to get over the high tower of blocks. --------- Stage 2-2 --------- 1. Be careful when swimming, it is very easy to hit a Spiked Block or to go to a dead end. --------- Stage 2-3 --------- 1. Make sure the 1-2-3 Blocks are white at certain times because there will be a bunch of Spiked Blocks forming a platform throughout the stage. --------- Stage 2-4 --------- 1. There will be parts with large sections of Spiked Blocks, so keep those 1-2-3 Blocks white! =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =- 7) THE LOST LEVELS -= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This is my favorite mode in the game. For those of you who have played/own Super Mario All-Stars will already know this game. And for those of you that don't, you can play it. This game is the Japanese version of Super Mario Bros. 2. The game includes a brand new item (which doesn't help you in anyway) and all new (hard) levels. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<< STAGE TIPS >>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> 1. Always use Select to see what's ahead. 2. There are many areas with big gaps. Use the long jump or search for hidden blocks to reach higher platforms. 3. Avoid the Poison Mushrooms, they are the same as getting hit by an enemy. 4. Also avoid Warp Zones, as they can take you back to a world instead of forward. 5. Save after each stage. Many of these levels are very hard. 6. Jump on Koopa Paratroopas to reach other areas. Doing that is required on the later levels. --------- Stage 1-2 --------- Warp(s): World 3 =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =- 8) ALBUM & TOY BOX -= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This section has info on the Album and the Toy Box. <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> <<< ALBUM >>> <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> ------- Page #1 ------- Mario Award - Beat level 8-4 in the Original - 1985 mode. Here's what each Toad gives you (This is in random order, not the order you access them). It is useful, but it can be hard to remember exactly where it was. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =- 9) ENEMIES -= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= Here are enemy descriptions along with their point value and a strategy to beat them. ------ Goomba ------ Points: 100 Your basic enemy. Just stomp on them to defeat them. ------------ Buzzy Beetle ------------ Points: 100 Similar to the Koopa Troopa but stronger. Fireballs don't affect his hard shell, so you must stomp on him. ------------ Koopa Troopa ------------ Points: 100 There are 2 colors of this enemy (Red & Green), both are similar but a bit different. Just stomp on them. ---------------- Koopa Paratroopa ---------------- Points: 400 There are also 2 of this enemy. They are identical to the regular kind, but they fly which makes them a bit harder. Do the usually drill or stomping. --------------- Hammer Brothers --------------- Points: 1,000 Very difficult enemy. They jump about and throw hammers at you. In the Lost Levels, they can walk towards you, which makes them even harder. You can stomp on them, but it's less dangerous using Fireballs. ------ Lakitu ------ Points: 800 This odd enemy flies around in a cloud while tossing Spiny Eggs on the ground. He's not that hard, so just jump on him. ----- Spiny ----- Points: 200 He appears once a Spiny Egg hits the ground. Because of the spikes on his back, you'll have to use Fireballs to defeat him. ------------- Piranha Plant ------------- Points: 200 Like the Koopa Troopas, there are 2 colors to them. The red ones can be found in the Lost Levels. These guys come out of pipes. Like Spiny, you have to use Fireballs. ------- Bloober ------- Points: 200 This squid is always in the water, but he can also fly in the air in the Lost Levels. Use Fireballs to toast him. ----------- Cheep-Cheep ----------- Points: 200 Besides swimming, this fish can "fly" in the air. In the water, use Fireballs. In air, stomp on them if you can. ----------- Bullet Bill ----------- Points: 200 These guys can fly through the air but at a very slow speed. Fireballs won't affect them, so do the usual stomp. ------ Bowser ------ Points: 5,000 His attacks vary except for his fireball. On the later levels, he can throw about 6 hammers at once at you. You will only get points for defeating him if you use Fireballs. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =- 10) SECRETS -= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This section various secrets in Super Mario Bros. To get the codes to work you must leave the effects switch in the off position until gameplay begins. Then turn the switch on. 2. You will notice this effect as soon as you turn the code switch on after you start the game. 3. This code can also be used with Luigi. 4. Mario or Luigi can barely jump even if you hold the A button. 5. Leave the code switch off. Go to a stage and turn the switch on. All bad guys will be gone. But it is in possible to touch the flag, even if you turn the code switch off. 6. As with all codes, this code must be switched OFF while starting the game. Turn the switch ON at the map screen. Also, unlike the "Yoshi is here!" codes, there are not individual codes for World/Stage. So 00=1-1, 01=1-2, 04=2-1 and so on. 7. To go through a pipe turn codes off, get hit and it's back to normal. You must turn codes off before touching the flag-pole. 8. To activate this, go in a level and turn codes on and then save and turn codes off. And there you have them. =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= =- 12) CREDITS -= =-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-= This section is here to recognize those who have contributed to this FAQ.
