They are story relevant and gameplay relevant in some cases. The FAQ will talk about where you find the songs, when you find them, what they are used for, how to play them, and any requirements if any. It does not cover extra "out of game" songs that some FAQs are written for. While a little redundant considering how relatively minor the songs are (and that they can be referenced within the menu itself), the FAQ's purpose is to show the differences in control between the various versions of Ocarina of Time that have been released, and to serve as a reference tool for those who are interested in where/when/what the songs are. The controls for the Nintendo 64 version, Gamecube port, and Wii Virtual Console version are all noted. ============================================================================== TABLE OF CONTENTS [ToC] ============================================================================== Use Ctrl/Apple + F to skip to specific sections, simply search for the letters within the brackets listed below. 1.) Table of Contents [ToC] 2.) Controls [CTR] 3.) The Songs [SON] a.) Song of Time [001] Song of Double Time [00A] Inverted Song of Time [00B] b.) Song of Healing [002] c.) Song of Storms [003] d.) Epona's Song [004] e.) Song of Soaring [005] f.) Sonata of Awakening [006] g.) Goron Lullaby [007] h.) New Wave Bossa Nova [008] i.) Elegy of Emptiness [009] j.) Oath to Order [010] 4.) Closing/Credits/Contact Information [CCC] 5.) Version Info [VIN] 6.) Authorized Websites [ADS] ============================================================================== CONTROLS [CTR] ============================================================================== The controls for playing the Ocarina in game are simple. You equip it to one of the item slots, and when using it, you will go into a mode where you can push the C-buttons, as well as other buttons, to control it. The game's songs do not require you to change the pitch of the notes at all, so the FAQ will not go too in depth on buttons you do not need to worry about. As the game has come out on the Nintendo 64, Wii Virtual Console, and Gamecube, the respective controls are listed below. I will stick with the N64 controls for simplicity. Nintendo 64: UP C BUTTON = Up RIGHT C BUTTON = Right LEFT C BUTTON = Left DOWN C BUTTON = Down A BUTTON = A B BUTTON = Cancel CONTROL STICK = Change pitch Gamecube: C STICK UP = Up C STICK RIGHT = Right C STICK LEFT = Left C STICK DOWN = Down A BUTTON = A B Button = Cancel X BUTTON = Right Y BUTTON = Left Z Button = Up Wii (Virtual Console) -If using the Gamecube controller, it is the same controls as "Gamecube" -Classic Controller's right stick is used to substitute for the "C stick/C Directional Pad") The Notes: (N64/GC/Wii) Up = ^ Down = v Left = < Right = > A = A You can see where they correspond below: ============================================================================== UP ============================================================================== LEFT ======================= RIGHT ================================================ DOWN ======= A ================================================================ These positions are shown when you enter the notes in the game anyway. No worries. ============================================================================== THE SONGS [SON] ============================================================================== @@ @ @ @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ @ @ @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ @@@ @ @ @@@ @ @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ @ @ @@ @ @@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@@ @ The format is as follows: NAME OF SONG Notes: How to play the Song Where: Where do you find/learn it When: When can you find/learn it What: What does the song do? Note: All songs can be reviewed in the menu of the game. Note: While they are "Ocarina" songs, the instruments will vary depending on what transformational mask you are wearing (Deku/Zora/Goron). But the notes are the same regardless. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ [001] SONG OF TIME > A v > A v (RIGHT A DOWN RIGHT A DOWN) Where: Story Event, when the Ocarina of Time is acquired, the song comes with it in the events that play. Atop the Clock Tower. When: When you get to the top of the Clock Tower for the first time and face the Skull Kid. It is a requirement to proceed in the story, and cannot be missed. What: The song is very important. It allows you to travel back to the first day at the expense of your money and items (not weapons, but ammo for them), as well as resetting all events that occur. It also allows you to save as you start at the first day again. Obviously a vital song. It saw less significant gameplay use in the prequel, Ocarina of Time. There are two other versions of the same song used for gameplay purposes in Majora's Mask, listed below. They are playable the moment you get the Ocarina, but are NOT listed on your sub menu. The Scarecrow in the Astral Observatory talks about them, but beyond that you don't get much of an indication for these very useful songs! [00A] SONG OF DOUBLE TIME > > A A v v (RIGHT RIGHT A A DOWN DOWN) What: This song forwards time to the next phase. By "phase" I mean "Dawn of the Second Day" or "Night of the First Day", it forwards you every half day, but cannot be used after the "Night of the Final Day" for obvious reasons. It is useful if there are certain events that take place on the third day that need to be forwarded too, or just forwarding to event specific times in general. The song itself is just the Song of Time with every note played twice. [00B] INVERTED SONG OF TIME v A > v A > (DOWN A RIGHT DOWN A RIGHT) What: This song slows time down, so the game clock goes half as fast. This is useful for prolonging a three day run, obviously. The time marker will change color (Blue being slowed down, Green being normal). To speed time back up, simply play the song again, and it will resume the normal speed. Great for exploration/playing Mini-games and just for general use. [002] SONG OF HEALING < > v < > v (LEFT RIGHT DOWN LEFT RIGHT DOWN) Where: Inside the Clock Tower, from the Happy Mask Salesman When: After travelling back in time using the Ocarina the first time (right after the above Song of Time is learned, pretty much). The Happy Mask Salesman will teach you this song to turn you back. What: A Song mostly for acquiring various masks throughout the game. The soothing melody is used to acquire the three main masks of the game, as well as being in other events. [003] SONG OF STORMS A v ^ A v ^ (A DOWN UP A DOWN UP) Where: Ikana Graveyard, beneath the Grave on Day 1, taught by "Flat" When: You need to have access to Ikana Graveyard, as well as the Captain's Hat, so you may go below the Grave on the first day. What: The song has various uses. For one it counters the "Melody of Darkness" that is played by "Sharp", and is needed in order to proceed. The song is also used to allow Magic Beans to grow when planted in soft soil around Termina. [004] EPONA'S SONG ^ < > ^ < > (UP LEFT RIGHT UP LEFT RIGHT) Where: Romani Ranch, taught by Romani (must be earlier than Day 2) When: When you are able to use the Powder Keg as a Goron, you can clear the road to Romani Ranch (At Milk Road) to enter before Day 3. You can then do the training session with her, and she will teach you Epona's Song. What: It is used to call Epona around Termina Field. [005] SONG OF SOARING v < ^ v < ^ (DOWN LEFT UP DOWN LEFT UP) Where: In Woodfall, taught by Kaepora Gaebora (the Owl) When: When you first reach Woodfall, and the Deku Palace, you are able to acquire this song when you reach the Owl Statue that sits near the palace. What: The song allows you to warp to any other "activated" (Owl statues that you have hit with a sword and have their wings spread) Owl Statues all around Termina. An owl statue sits in a lot of the vital places, and are great time savers to warp to in a game where time is the essence. Also, in dungeons, the song warps you to the dungeon entrance. [006] SONATA OF AWAKENING ^ < ^ < A > A (UP LEFT UP LEFT A RIGHT A) Where: Deku Palace, taught by the Monkey When: When you first reach Deku Palace, and find your way into the Monkey's cell. It is a story requirement, and is required to enter the first temple. What: The song is used to raise Woodfall Temple out of the water. It is also used for other events, such as awakening Captain Keeta, or a sleeping Deku Scrub in the Swamp Spider House. It can be used to get a Piece of Heart in a hidden grotto in Termina Field. The one with the one giant Statue and three smaller ones. The other two songs, Goron Lullaby and New Wave Bossa Nova, also work to get this heart. [007] GORON LULLABY A > < A > < > A (A RIGHT LEFT A RIGHT LEFT RIGHT A) Where: In two parts, the first half is taught by the Goron Elder, and the second half is played when playing for the young Goron. When: When you reach Snowhead and the Gorons there, this song is required to enter Snowhead Temple, and so cannot be missed. What: The song is used to put the Big Goron outside of Snowhead Temple to sleep. It can be used to get a Piece of Heart in a hidden grotto in Termina Field. The one with the one giant Statue and three smaller ones. The other two songs, Sonata of Awakening and New Wave Bossa Nova, also work to get this heart. [008] NEW WAVE BOSSA NOVA < ^ < > v < > (LEFT UP LEFT RIGHT DOWN LEFT RIGHT) Where: The Marine Research Lab in the Great Bay Coast, taught by the newborn Zora When: After you recover all seven Zora eggs and bring them to the Research Lab, the newborn Zora will line up as musical notes. You can learn it by pulling out the guitar when that happens. It is a story event, so it cannot be missed. What: The song is used to restore Lulu's voice, and is used to gain access to the Great Bay Temple. It can be used to get a Piece of Heart in a hidden grotto in Termina Field. The one with the one giant Statue and three smaller ones. The other two songs, Goron Lullaby and Sonata of Awakening, also work to get this heart. [009] ELEGY OF EMPTINESS > < > v > ^ < (RIGHT LEFT RIGHT DOWN RIGHT UP LEFT) Where: Ancient Castle of Ikana, taught by Igos du Ikana When: When you complete the Ancient Castle, the King teaches you this after the battle. It is required to enter the fourth and final temple, so it cannot be missed. What: It creates a statue of Link in his form when playing it, with a maximum of four statues (Link, Deku Link, Goron Link, Zora Link), that can be moved around, and put on panels as needed. The statue will appear in the place Link was standing when playing the song. No more than one of the same form can be made into a statue at a time. So you cannot have two Deku Link statues, the second one will make the first disappear. [010] OATH TO ORDER > v A v > ^ (RIGHT DOWN A DOWN RIGHT UP) Where: By the first of Four Giants When: Right after the completion of Woodfall Temple, Link is taken to one of the giants, who teaches him the song. It cannot be missed. What: The song is used for a significant story event, after the four giants are gathered, it is to be played atop the Clock Tower on the night of the Final Day, and gives access to the Moon. It can be played without the four, but fails as all four are needed. ============================================================================== CLOSING/CREDITS/CONTACT INFORMATION [CCC] ============================================================================== Short and simple, but I'm taking suggestions if there is anything else that needs to be added. I know there are some secrets I missed, as to what some songs can also be used for, and I would appreciate it if someone emails me those details. If you want to help, naming all the instances the "Song of Healing" is used, or other songs that effect events aside from the main quest, I will add them and credit you for the information! Also more information regarding all the small secrets that come with the "Song of Storms" would be useful. If you have any other ideas as to what to add to this FAQ that would be relevant to using the Ocarina in Majora's Mask, please email me! I'll be sure to give credit where credit is due! Also, any errors you see, or anything even as small as a typo, please email me! I'll fix it as quickly as I can. Thanks for reading, cheers! -MKay CREDITS: Thanks to the reader for bothering to motivate me to write FAQs like this, and thanks to Majora's Mask for being my favorite Zelda game.
