She gains this ability in Chapter 2. Once you restore Jurak to the point that he'll give Monica the Badge Box, she's free to get Badges. They're only useable in dungeons, and when Monica is in Monster form, there's a time limit that gradually ticks down. Once the timer is fully depleted, the Monster form "dies" and you have to choose a different character. In Monster form, you have either one or two attacks, which are used by the Square and X buttons. Monsters start out at level 1, and as they gain ABS, they'll level up and get stronger. Monsters are capable of evolving into new, more powerful creatures every 25 levels. [2: Pros and Cons of Monster Transformation] Pros: -If you're a Monster of the same type (a Beast monster, for example) you can have friendly conversations with every other member of that monster family. Monsters of that type won't attack you. -You get a Monster Drop for every time your Monster evolves into a new creature, which is a wondrous item for Spectrumizing onto your weapons. If you evolve a Monster into its final form, you'll obtain several rare Gemstones such as Peridots or Garnets. -By making a strong Monster, you can complete challenges on levels that say that you can only use Monster Transformation, and win some elusive medals. -Monsters have no Weapon HP to worry about. -Some monsters naturally have a special effect to their attacks. For example, a Froggy's Venom attack can poison. Cons: -Monsters start out incredibly weak. Unfortunately, even after they take so much work to get even moderately powerful, their max stats are pitiful compared the Monica's, Max's, and the Ridepod's max Attack and Defense values. -They take a long time to level up. Initially they gain levels nicely, but eventually it slows down. -They're not much good for serious use, due to their low stats and limited attacks. -The Card Badge is a real pain to get, requiring three Diamonds. You should probably wait until Chapter 8 before getting this Badge. Any Diamond Card monster will do, including those in the Zelmite Mines. -Monica and the Monster share the same HP. If your Monster dies, so does Monica. [3. Obtaining Monster Badges] There are twelve Badges in all, ten of which are used to transform into Monsters. Here's how to get them. ! The Basic Monster Badge Technique ! First, you need Gift Capsules. You can invent them, buy them from Claire, or buy them from the Jurak Mall (they cost 400 Gilda apiece). Then, what you need is three specific items, which I will list below. (If they're stacked in your inventory, press Triangle while holding the cursor over them, and you'll be able to take a specified amount). Drag and drop the three items into the Gift Capsule. Next, go to a level that features the monster you're looking for. When you find the monster, I'd advise stunning them with a Heart-Throb Cherry or Stone Berry so that they're still. You need to equip the Gift Capsule with the three items, and then you throw it at the monster. If you successfully hit the monster with the right stuff in the Gift Capsule, a little music note will appear above its head. Kill it, and the monster will drop the Transformation badge of that type. The Undead and Windup Badge are obtained through a different method, where you have to kill a certain monster with a type of item. -Beast Badge Enemy: Sewer Rat (or Ram) Level: Sewers (or Starlight Canyon) Item: Three Cheeses (or three Premium Chickens) Where to Get Item: Buy at Starlight Temple (or buy from Ferdinand) -Windup Badge Enemy: Bomber Head Level: Mount Gundor Item: Kill it with bombs Where to Get Item: Buy at Palm Brinks from Morton -Flora Badge Just buy it at the Tailor Shop at the Jurak Mall for 500 Gilda. -Aquatic Badge Enemy: Froggy (or Goyone) Level: Sewers (Or Ocean's Roar Cave) Item: Three Battan (or three Evys) Where to Get Item: Buy at Mushroom Burgers at the Jurak Mall (Or buy from Fabio) -Darkling Badge Enemy: Spider Lady (Or Medusa type enemies) Level: Rainbow Butterfly Woods (or at Ocean's Roar Cave) Item: Three Gold Bars (Or three Rubies) Where to Get Item: Buy from Conda on the train (or buy from Morton, Chapter 8) -Card Badge Enemy: Diamond Card (ANY type will work!) [4. Monster Transformation Evolutions] A Monster starts out at level 1. Every twenty-five levels, your monster can evolve into a stronger form. That means that once a Monster hits level 26, 51, and 76, it can get a new form. To choose the new form, got to the Badge Box and examine that Monster's badge. An option will appear to upgrade your monster. Sometimes there will be more than one choice, so just pick the one you want. Upon doing that, you can now use a different form, you're rewarded with a Monster Drop, and if you evolved a monster into their final form, you get several Gemstones. You can use your old monsters, too! Just be forewarned...if there's more than one choice, what you choose will affect your path. For example: I leveled up a Magical Badge to 51. I can be a Baron Balloon and a Flotsam Balloon. I decide that my next form will be a Guardia. I can only upgrade my Magical Badge into a Dark Keeper. Now, I can never take the other path and get a Count and Duke Balloon. Choose wisely, as there's no going back once you pick one out of two choices. Here's a chart for every family, showing the paths you can take. The charts show what order the beasties evolve in, and at the minimum level possible. Some have separate paths that split into two distinct types of monsters. In that case, the format will be slightly different. -Reptile Wind Gemron (1) -> Ice Gemron (26+) -> Thunder Gemron (51+) -> Holy or Fire Gemron (76+) -Beast 1. Sewer Rat (1) -> Ram (26+) 1. Sewer Rat (1) -> Beach Rat (26+) 2. Ram (26+) -> Savage Ram or Hunter Fox (51+) 2. Beach Rat (26+) -> Castle Eater or Hunter Fox (51+) 3. Savage Ram (51+) -> Bandou (76+) 3. Miss Gourgon (51+) -> Mrs. Gourgon (76+) * Note: For some odd reason, two monsters are called "Spider Lady", but they are different. [5. Sun and Moon Badges] These two Badges don't actually transform Monica; instead, they give boosts to Monster Transform. The Moon Badge slows the bar that appears while in Monster form, allowing you to be in Monster form for longer. The Sun Badge gives the Monsters extra attack and defense. To get the Moon Badge, get your photography level up to 7 and get your reward from Donny. To get the Sun Badge, do the same thing, except get the highest rank possible, 8. The attack and defense are invisible and you cannot see them added to your monster's stats, but they do make a difference. If you need help getting photo ideas for points, check a Photography FAQ for more help. [6. Prizes] Every time you evolve a Monster, you get a Monster Drop, an excellent Synthesis item. When you evolve a Monster into its final form, you get several Gemstones. The exact items that you get are still a mystery...I'm still figuring some out. To earn experience in a much more practical way, kill an enemy with Monica, then switch to the monster to collect the experience. If Monica's weapon has the ABS Up ability, your Monster will even earn 20% more ABS. Keep in mind, all forms of a monster Badge will level up together. If I have a Reptile Badge and level up my Holy Gemron, my Wind Gemron, Ice Gemron, and Thunder Gemron will level up, too. Don't even bother trying to level up Monsters until you get to the Moon Flower Palace, at least. The rate at which you gain ABS finally becomes reasonable there. If you're looking for the best overall level to work up your Monsters, I'd advise the Zelmite Mine's Anxiety level. The whole level is composed of Card type monsters. They give 500 ABS apiece. Unlike the toughest monsters, which give 600 ABS apiece, they're a snap to defeat. It's the most efficient way of getting ABS overall. Just kill the Card monster with Monica, and switch to the Monster you want to level up. Strangely enough, even at level 99, you can still collect ABS, but you'll get nothing for it. [9. They're just programmed that way. If you want even a reasonably strong Monster, it takes forever. Q: Why even bother with Monster Transformation? A: See the Pros of the Pros and Cons section. Q: What monster do you use? A: I use (and highly recommend) Gemrons. They're fast, their stats are good, and they have lightning-fast, long ranged attacks. You may want to use a Frog-type monster due to their poisonous projectile attacks. Another canidate is the Gourgons, who can use long-range petrifying attacks. Q: I followed through with your exact instructions on how to give a Gift Capsule to a monster. I threw the Gift Capsule and a music note appeared over the monster's head, yet I got nothing! Why doesn't it work? A: Occasionally this happens. If it doesn't work, try it again at a different time or place. If you put expensive items in the container or if the containers are still costly, it's best that you save beforehand to make sure that you don't waste your money. Q: How do I restore Monica's transformation energy? A: Just exit the dungeon. Q: Can I contribute? A: Yes. I'd especially like Monster titles and exact stats for the evolution prizes. I'll give you full credits in the Credits section. Q: Why are there two Spider Ladies? A: I have no idea. It must've been a flaw in the translation. Q: Can you help me with photos/Georama/etc.? A: Sorry, I'm only doing this for the Monster Transformation. Check other guides for that information. Q: It's possible to get monster badges through different methods than you listed, using different monsters and items. Why do you only list one or two options? A: It most likely is possible, but the thing is...why bother? Most of the monsters and items you need are easy to find. If you've come up with a new finding on new sources of badges, though, feel free to contact me so I can try verifying it. [12. I've added new titles for Spirits, Undead, and Flora and rewards too thanks to doahunterx and Laurie. [15. Credits] Level 5: For creating such an awesome game.
