Disgeae: Hour of Darkness <+>Monster Guide<+> Author: Frozen Atari Written on: October 31st, 2003 Contact: JosephStalen@hotmail.com Version: 1.01 ------------------------------------------------- Introduction: In this guide, I'll be showing you the wonderful world of Monster catching, raising, and tips. Many of you who played Disgeae probably already have a view on monster: "I have humans, why do I need monsters?" True, Humans do gain more abilities, have a wider selection of weapons, and just seem more useful. Yet, monsters have several advantages over humanoid demons, some just may surprise you. Types of Monsters: Skills: I have also listed the skills that monsters use. Under each skill name I have given a brief description. Attack pattern: States how the Attack behaves. Range and how many targets it can hit is also listed here. Attack Rating: Gives my personal rating how each skill attacks and usefulness in battle. It is graded on a scale 1 to 5. A 1 means its barely better then a normal attack. A 5 indicates this attack is very useful. SP Effect: Tells whether a skill inflicts a status effect, Element, or what have you. ------------------------------------------ Ok, we'll start off at the beginning of our lovely list and work on down. Prinny: Prinnies are quite odd. They are the only monster that explodes when you chuck them, and have the oddest mode of attack. They rapidity attack the enemy with two knives... This means you have more chances to hit the enemy (this will prove helpful against Ninjas) They can also have a nice selection of Special attacks. While the attacks may not be strong, they do induce a verity of status effects. Over all theses are used for chucking at people, but still great fun! Skills: Prinny Barrage Attack pattern: one target, four spaces away. Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: None Prinny dance Attack pattern: One, close Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Dark, Paralyze, Forget Prinny bomb Attack pattern: Plus sign, close Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: Fire Pringer beam Attack pattern: All around Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: None Nosferatu: These guys have over all good stats, with peeks in HP and Attack. They also have a very nice selection of special attacks. All though, their first move is kind of weak, the rest are quite strong. They also have very nice movement and jump power, that way they can be were you want them, right when you need them. All though, these guy are very expensive. Even at the lowest grade, they still costs 5 mana! Over all, I would recommend having one if you don't have a good human fighter. I also recommend having some spells taught to them, if you have some extra time. Skills: Chaos Fire Attack pattern: X, center 4 spaces Attack rating: 1/5 Sp Effect: Fire Chaos Swarm Attack pattern: Plus sign, close Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Chaos Force Attack pattern: Chaotic, close Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Chaos Plasma: Attack pattern: All around Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: None KitCat: Rrrooowww! One of the two sexy demon types that Laharle can't stand. They have yo-yo like stats. While they have great attack, HP, and hit, their magical def, Defense, and Int are quite low. They also have a good Varity of attacks, including the feared Mystic blast, which can level several opponents. Over all, you can say the are the Brawler of the Monster world. They have techs that attack on a on to one basis, and the major advantage they have over brawlers is the Mystic Blast tech. It's a mid range attack that hurts! Skills: Rapid Kick Attack pattern: One, close Attack rating: 1/5 Sp Effect: None Fists of Fury Attack pattern: One, close Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: None Mystic Blast Attack pattern:Three Panels forward Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Delta Kick Attack pattern: One, close, tosses four spaces Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Succubus: Hubba hubba! The other type of sexy demon that Larhale can't open his eyes too. Yet don't yet their looks fool you, they can be a tough opponent, and a very good ally. They have all over rounded stats, although Evil healing is quite useless. While they may not make a replacement for any humanoid demon, they still do kick ass. Skills: Hip Attack Attack pattern: One, close Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Drain Thunderbolt Attack pattern: Three panels forward Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: None Evil Healing Attack pattern: Plus sign, close Attack rating: 1/5 Sp Effect: Heals Flying sparks Attack pattern: Acts like a spell with the range of a spear. Attack damage is in the shape of a plus sign. Does not hurt caster. Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Darkness Beast: Sadly, there roar is worse then there bite. That's all I can really say. They have a huge peek in HP, but other then that they are not very desirable. They have a ridiculously low Def, it's so low that the insane HP can't make up for it. Although, I do have to admit they have a good list of techs. Yet, that's the only good thing I can say for these Demons. What?s even worse is that even if you wanted one, catching them is very difficult due to their high H.P. Skills: Stinger Strike Attack pattern: One, close Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Drains Beast Rend Attack pattern: Four panels forward, fourth one is used for the caster to land on. Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: none Devour Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: Fire Beast Ray Attack pattern: Five panel forward Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Nether Noble: Watch out, he's gotta Axe!! These pig demons dress expensively and are like a better form of the Beast. Like the beast, they have a lot of HP, yet these guys have the Def to keep it alive. They have a murderous list of Techs, some of the best I've come across. Some can even bring down fighters and their like to critical if you are not careful! Good thing about them is they do not show up alot. I you do find one, kill it quickly. Then make one of your own, heh heh. Skills: Spinning Slash Attack pattern: Plus Sign Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Darkness Slash Attack pattern: A "T" shaped in front of the caster Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Earth Shaker Attack pattern: One, Two panels in front. Exchanges places with the attacker and opponent. Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: None Megaton Crush Attack pattern: Plus sign, center is three panels away from caster Attack rating: 5/5 Sp Effect: None Undead: Zombies and the like fall in this race of demons. Their stats are well rounded...all but Def that is. Yet, they make that up with attack power and techs(including the feared Zombie twister and Zombie Swarm).Good thing about them is they are common, and can one of the first monsters you can make. They also make great pets for children. (You'll never here them complain about how their pet died!) Skills Zombie Puke Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Poison Zombie Twister Attack pattern: Four forward, Fourth one is used to land on. Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Wind Zombie Gatling Attack pattern: Three Horizontal panels in front Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Fire Zombie Swarm Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: Poison, Paralyze Dragon: That's right. Dragons. I know what comes to mind "OH MAN!!! I GOT TO HAVE ONE!!!" Yet, you will be disappointed. Don't get wrong, they are a nice monster to have around, but it's not what you expect. They have do have above average stats, but a poor list of abilities. I advise only making one if you really love dragons, for the other people, there are better monsters. Skills: Bloody Talons Attack pattern: One, four spaces in front Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: None Fire/Ice Breath Attack pattern: Three panels in front Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Fire/Ice Red/Blue Nova Attack pattern: three Horizontal panels, three spaces in front Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Fire/Ice Dagonic Flare/Freeze/Furor Attack pattern: All around Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Fire/Ice/Air Galactic Demon: This is one of those better monsters I was talking about. These buff demons have huge peeks in both Def and Res. Not only that, but the have some devastating Techs. Just about all their other stats are well rounded or above average. The only down side is there movement. It's only two! Although, these are the kind of demons that wait for the enemy to come to them. An easy way to fix this is to plop some shoes on them and get the Senate to increase the Galactic demon's movement. These guys are also rare, so if you plan on making one, it's going to be a rough road. They are also very tough to kill, but the reward is worth it. Magnetic Wave Attack pattern: Plus sign, two spaces out ward Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Magnetic Blast Attack pattern: One in front, then spreads out to a 3x2 square Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Magnetic Field Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: Wind Magnetic Flash Attack pattern:All around Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: None Serpent: It's a walking shark with horns... Other then that, they do have good stats. The serpents have High attack, good HP and above average stats...all but SP, which just sucks. It's a bit of a shame, because they have some killer techs, so don't expect to pull many off. Yet, I have a hard time playing with these guys, they just look so silly! You can also expect these guys being on the endangered species list in the Nether world, because I've only seen them a few times. Skills: Flap Dance Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: None Quadra Nose Dive Attack pattern: Plus Sign in front Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Death Drop Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Wind Supernova Attack pattern: Triangle shaped, one space away Attack rating: 5/5 Sp Effect: none Shadow: Spoooo-ky! These guys have "nightmare" written all over them! Any way, these guys are like the mages of the Monster world. They have great Int (rare for monsters) and nice HP. They have some helpful techs, and teaching them magic is a must. Some might end up preferring these guys over mages if the could only equip staffs. Yet, they have a better survival ratio then humanoid mages, just the thing if you find that your puny doll skulls just get killed off to quickly. Over all though, they don't measure up to mages in pure magic power, but they still can deliver some nasty spells. Skills: Fire Dance Attack pattern: five panels in front Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: Fire Ice Dance Attack pattern: X shaped, three panels front of the center Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Ice Light Dance Attack pattern: Five panels in front, horizontal Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Fire & Ice Attack pattern: Plus sign, three panels away from the center Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: none Gargoyle: They look kind of like chess pieces. Any way, nothing really does jump out at you with the Gargoyle. They have some good, and very cool techs, but nothing distinct. Kind of like your run of the mill monster. Skills: Minimize Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Paralyze Soul Eater Attack pattern: Three panels, horizontal Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: Drain Cannonball Attack pattern: Plus sign, three panels from the center Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Fire Eruption Attack pattern: Plus, close Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: Fire Lantern: Much like the Gargoyles, nothing is all that distinct with these pumpkin headed demons. They are quite common, and have some surprisingly good techs. They also have a lot of counter attacks. Other then that, they are nothing all that really distinct. Skills Jack knife Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: None Jack the Ripper Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: None Jack rush Attack pattern: Four Panels forward, one must be free Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Jackpot Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: none Dark knight: Ok, now these guys are meant for physical combat. Def, Attack, HP, and Hit are all higher then most demons. They also have a nasty brand of unique sword skills they can use on you. A recommended Monster if you intend to make one. Although, you should watch out for mages, theses guy have a hard time standing up to magic. They are also easy to come by, so you can make them quite cheaply after awhile. Although, they are a bit slower then most demons. Skills: Power Slice Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: None Lighting Slash Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: None Gigantic Slash Attack pattern: Two panels in front Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Blade Frenzy Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: None Winged: Will you look at that, the only demons with wings that work. They have average stats, with lowish HP. They also only have two good techs. Hell pepper and Air assault. The other two are not even worth using. Thing is, they are annoying! Hell pepper does a good amount of damage, and it always poisons. Although, they just are not worth the trouble of raising in my experience. Skills: Hell Pepper Attack pattern: Three panels, horizontal Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: Poison Holy Dust Attack pattern: Plus sign, close Attack rating: 1/5 Sp Effect: Heal Ionize Attack pattern: A "T" shape in front of the caster Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: None Air Assault Attack pattern: Three panels forward with the center three panels away from the caster Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect None Treant: Very common. I mean very common. Next to the spirit, you'll be running into these guys left and right. They have some nice techs with almost average stats. I really don't know what to say any thing else about them. They kind of fall in the same category as Lanterns and Gargoyles do. Skills: Putrid Breath Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Poison, paralyze Stomp-o-rama Attack pattern: Three panels forward Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: Paralyze Pounding Spree Attack pattern: One. Must have the back of the user, and two panels away clears. Tosses enemy. Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: None Paranoia Attack pattern: Plus sign in front of the user. Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect:None Golems: Theses guys are kind of like giant flavored killer snow cones. Look at all the flavors, strawberry, coffee, and mint! Any way, these guys only have strength and Hp going for them. Their techs are not bad, but nothing all that destructive. All and all, a Nosferatu would be a better choice. Skills: Golem Dunk Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: Fire Golem Cannon Attack pattern: Three panels in front Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: None Psionic Wave Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Paralyze Golem Smash Attack pattern: All around Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Paralyze Spirit: What the hell is with their head..? Any way, these guys are like the little brothers to Shadows. Their techs are kind of poor, and their stats are nothing to be wowed over. Yet they are common, very common. You can see them as sort of another mage of the monster world. But shadows are better. And they look a lot cooler too. Other wise, if you didn't make them in the beginning, I wouldn't bother making them at all. Pixie Magic Attack pattern: Three horizontally Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: None Shock Magic Attack pattern: One, Two panels ahead of the caster Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: None Bomb Magic Attack pattern: All around Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Fire Ice Magic Attack pattern: One, three panels ahead Attack rating: 2/5 Sp Effect: Ice Faerie: Watch out, he's got a knife! These apron wearing demons has lowish stats. Are quite common, and easy to beat. That is, if you can survive their techs. Almost all of their techs cause nasty status effects. They are the only monsters that can make opponents go to sleep. A good demon choice if you are having trouble with large numbers of enemies since they can make them nod out with their useful Demon's breath tech. Making one won't hurt, and it will help out in those battles were you need to buy some time. Skills: Petit Flare Attack pattern: One Attack rating: 1/5 Sp Effect: None Demon's Breath Attack pattern: Three panels in front Attack rating: 5/5 Sp Effect: Sleep Camaraderie Attack pattern: X shaped, two panels away from caster Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: Poison Chomper Combo Attack pattern: One, and tosses the enemy one space forward Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: None Great Wurm Yeah? You?re gonna want one of these, even if you hate monsters. To put it simply, these guys are like a pet iguana on steroids? A pet iguana on steroids that loves to play with fire. These guys also come in various Elements, so you?re going to find one that you like. They have great, all around beefy stats, and are well worth taking along. They have some of the most destructive monster attacks in the game as well. Skills: Raging/Frigid/Astral/Diabolic/Fiery Dance Attack pattern: 3x3 attack panel in front. Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Wind/Ice/None/None/Fire Raging/Frigid/Astral/Diabolic/Fiery Column Attack pattern: Chaotic Attack rating: 3/5 Sp Effect: Wind/Ice/None/None/Fire Raging/Frigid/Astral/Diabolic/Fiery Roar Attack pattern: Triangle shaped, one space away Attack rating: 5/5 Sp Effect: Wind/Ice/None/None/Fire Raging/Frigid/Astral/Diabolic/Fiery Burst Attack pattern: All Around Attack rating: 4/5 Sp Effect: Wind/Ice/None/None/Fire ---------------------------------------- Monster catching tips: Ok, say that you just don't feel like raising one of your little demonic pokemon. Well, how about you go catch one? You can easily pick one up and chuck it into your base plate, but here are some tips to get more bang out of your buck. 1. Look at the stats. Some monsters that I've come across have unbelievable stat in some areas. Some might have double the normal amount of lets say Res or SP. You want hunt these guys down and chuck them into your base plate as soon as you can. 2. Always plan ahead. Always do this, you'll never know what's going to happen. Because a high Level monster can surely tear every one in you base plate a new one. So check the LVs, Hp and SP of the monster that you are going to be chucking in. Oh yeah, and SAVE before you attempt this. 3. Less is better. Having a little number of people out on the field is better. That way, you have more people in your base plate to subdue the monster. Also, expect some damage when you chuck one in. For every body in your base plate gangs up on it to subdue it. (You can imagine a Demon not enjoying this.) This means many of your lower level guys will die that battle. Also, it's good to have High HP characters in your base plate, for it certainly means that you will capture the bugger 4. Combine! Take one monster, and chuck another monster into it to get...A high level monster! Now pick up that bad boy and shove him into the base plate to get a nasty, and powerful, buddy on your side. 5. Be careful. If you come across a monster you never killed before, it will automatically destroy your base plate if you chuck it in. Bosses and Humaniods will do the same. 6. Hp&SP is all that matters! Really it does! Find a character with lots of HP, cram as much of the mussel stuff (the items that increase HP.) as you can on them, and blammo! You are sure to catch them! The only thing you have to worry about is Max HP. If the monster?s is more then any one in the base, the monster gonna have a hissy fit and win. If not, well, you have your self a new buddy. Monster raising tips: Ok, so you want to do it the hard way? Adda boy (or girl)! 1. Kill more, the less you pay in mana. Also, killing a single type of monster 20 to 30 times gives you a relatively cheap monster. 2. Unarmed? Doesn't matter! Since monster have naturally high stats, they can make it with out weapons in till later. (After you raise some Hell that is)Then, if you like how your monster is doing, you can beef it up with some weapons. Unlike humanoids, which you HAVE to give them weapons, monsters can survive with out them. Thus being much cheaper (money wise) to raise. Well, This is the end of my little guide, I hope you found it helpful!~Atari
