About The Game | -------------------------------------------- Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Welcome to Vice City. Welcome to the 1980s. Having just made it back onto the streets of Liberty City after a long stretch in maximum security, Tommy Vercetti is sent to Vice City by his old boss, Sonny Forelli. They were understandably nervous about his re-appearance in Liberty City, so a trip down south seemed like a good idea. But all does not go smoothly upon his arrival in the glamorous, hedonistic metropolis of Vice City. He's set up and is left with no money and no merchandise. Sonny wants his money back, but the biker gangs, Cuban gangsters, and corrupt politicians stand in his way. Most of Vice City seems to want Tommy dead. His only answer is to fight back and take over the city himself. As a major gateway to South America and the Caribbean and attracting migrants, Vice City is brimming with diverse characters, so there's a friend for everyone. It is a sociable place and the new guy in town is sure to meet all manner of friendly people in the sunshine capital of America. Athletes, pop stars, real estate developers, politicians, trailer trash, everyone is moving to Vice City to find out what makes it the number one growth city in America. But, as Tommy quickly finds out, trust is still the rarest of commodities. Vice City offers vehicular pleasures to suit every taste. For the speed enthusiast, there's high-performance cars and motorbikes. For the sportsman, a powerboat or a golf buggy lets you enjoy the great outdoors. For those that need that sense of freedom and escape, why not charter a helicopter and see the beauty of Vice City from the air? As the party capital of America, you would expect your ears to be seduced by a host of sultry melodies and pumping beats, but the city is truly rocking. You'll be AMAZED as you sweep through Vice City's FM dial. If you are feeling like trouble, you can tune into some driving rock, or some crucial electro, or maybe you want to slow down with some sweet soul, and there will always be some great romantic anthems if you want to really take your mind off things. For the action man, or outdoors type, there's tons of fun things to do and adventures to be had... guaranteed. For the secretive or creepy type, Vice City is full of surprises, a place where you'll constantly be surprised by the vivacious, fun-loving types who live there and the things you can discover. GameSpot: What can you tell us about Vice City's graphics engine? This villa is undoubtedly the property of some drug lord in the game. Adam Fowler: Vice City's graphics engine is based loosely on the Grand Theft Auto III engine, with many improvements added. One of the obvious improvements is the addition of skins for the pedestrians. This allows our artists to produce much more realistic and graphically pleasing peds. One of the less obvious improvements is our use of occlusion volumes. This allows us to stop drawing objects that are hidden behind buildings, and scene complexity can therefore be increased because we are only drawing the objects the player can see. GS: Grand Theft Auto III used a stylish sort of blur effect throughout the game. Will that same effect be in Vice City? Aaron Garbut: The effect is there, but altered. The blur this time tends to echo the effect of strong sunshine bleaching out light colors. GS: What kind of graphical or performance differences will we see between Grand Theft Auto III and Vice City? AG: Generally, the level of detail in the game has at least doubled. We're using twice as many polys and textures on almost every object. The cars have loads more detail, and the peds are skinned, creating a far smoother look. We had a good look at how we built Liberty City and found what was fast and what was slow within the engine. Obbe [Vermeij], one of the technical directors, wrote a real- time occlusion system, which works out whether buildings are blocking the view and whether it needs to draw all the objects behind it. This has given us a lot of breathing space to squeeze in that extra detail. We've also got a lot of new effects: heat haze from the roads, flamethrowers, explosions, lots of aquatic life in the ocean, birds, flies, and a much better day-night cycle with lots of neon casting light everywhere. Generally speaking, as with the rest of the game, it's a case of bigger, better, faster, more. AF: Vice City will be able to display more peds and more vehicles. Both pedestrians and vehicles have higher polygon counts. Pedestrians are now skinned, as mentioned. Because the level size has doubled in Vice City, the game has to display far more buildings at any one time. We've been able to include these increases because of improvements in the rendering engine and also improvements in our model culling methods. Vice City has many more visual effects, including sun reflection on water and raindrops on the screen. GS: Did the fact that the game is a PlayStation 2 exclusive allow for more freedom? AG: Not having to consider a second platform in development is always easier. Concentrating on the PS2 gives us a consistent platform across the entire team. That way, when one person finds a certain part of the game slow, we can be sure everyone else will and do something about it. In some respects this makes things easier, but...well, you can't make up excuses anymore. GS: How did the game's setting affect its art style and look? AG: The 1980s are a constant throughout every aspect of the game--from the front-end and loading screens to the advertising on billboards in the game, the props that appear in the interiors, the furniture, and the clothes the people wear. It does make things a bit trickier. Setting things in the past ended up giving us a lot more work, as some of our props were not invented. It also meant redesigning every single car from Grand Theft Auto III, since none of them were around at that time, either. What it has done, though, is given us a lot of scope for humor and a sense of consistency that would otherwise be tricky to achieve. GS: Where did you look for inspiration for the game's overall look? AG: As with Grand Theft Auto III, we watched a lot of films and pored over every book we could find. The whole team also went to Miami and did a lot of research themselves. We got a lot of inspiration from Scarface, Carlito's Way, and, of course, Miami Vice. We wanted to make Vice City seem bright and colorful. I personally hate the kind of hyperreal photographic look that succeeds in making a game look either brown or gray. If I wanted to spend time in a gray city, I'd go back to our old offices in Dundee and stand in the rain. GS: How did you go about conveying location through the graphics? AG: Basing the city on such a strongly visual city as Miami made things pretty easy. It's such a distinct city, and it's great fun to model, with all the curves and overhangs on the art deco buildings. Obviously, the lighting, weather, and water had to change from the rainy, dull, and morbid Liberty City. We concentrated on making things bright, colorful, and pastel-shaded. The water changed a lot, with environment mapping to make it seem reflective and add sparkles glinting from the sun on the surface. It's also transparent now, as we wanted it to seem clean and clear (although it did mean modeling the entire seabed too.) GS: What are you proudest of about the Grand Theft Auto: Vice City engine? AG: As with Grand Theft Auto III, the draw distance. There are very few games with this much detail and action taking place onscreen and this number of characters and vehicles around. I don't think there are any games that do that and still draw 2.5km into the distance at all times. AF: Probably the best thing about the Vice City engine is the same as with Grand Theft Auto III--the streaming technology. We spent a lot of time on this when developing Grand Theft Auto III, and without it, the game would not have worked. Again, with Vice City, we spent a lot of time improving the streaming. In Vice City it doesn't just stream textures and models, it also streams collision and animation. The animation streaming means we can have special one-off animations like the skaters, joggers, sunbathers, and so on. GS: How many different pedestrian skins and models are in the game? Glamorous resorts will line the main strip that runs along Vice City's beach. AG: There will be 110 different ambient pedestrian models on the street and around 50 story characters. Each character has a higher poly count and twice the number of textures than the characters in Grand Theft Auto III, and they're fully skinned to be nice and smooth with no segmented joins. GS: What sort of new weapon and explosion effects can we expect to see? AG: There are heat haze effects on some of the weapons such as the flamethrower. The explosion effect has been revamped, with the main force of the explosion emitting from the fuel tank, which gives quite a spectacular result. Every other effect has been enhanced and tweaked in some way--nothing remains the same as Grand Theft Auto III. GS: Sounds great, guys. Thanks for your time. -------------------------------------------- | 2. Use alley ramp to jump storage containers, through a Police Bribe, and gain access to a heli challenge. 6. Jump the wooden ramp on the crate in the grassy alley, then soar above the old school bus and adjacent house. 7. Jump the wooden ramp through the Police Bribe and over the drainage channel. Little Havana 8. Use the slope on top of the Calle 8 Cafeteria to jump the street and land on the roof of the 1-HR Photo Store. Build up speed a few rooftops south of the Unique Stunt ramp. Escobar International 9. Use the mobile stairs to jump the fence and land in a parking lot across the street, or on the VC Transport Police building. 10. Use the large VC Surf 3D billboard as a ramp to reach the top of the airport terminal. 11. Use the lift ramp to jump the fence and land in the street. 12. Use the mobile stairs to jump over the easternmost loading bridge, heading west. 13. Jump the westernmost loading bridge in the same fashion as 12, heading west. 14. Same as 13, heading east. 15. On the opposite side of jump #17, use the yellow runway marker to jump the radar building. 16. Use mobile stairs next to the red radar building to jump as high as you can. Starfish Island 17. Find the steps on the Southside of the brown stucco house on the northern coast. Back up into the yard to the west (you'll see a small, open gate near the garage) and use that area to speed through the yards and up the steps. Ramp the hedges and land in your eastern-neighbor's yard. Vice Point 18. On the Southside of The Malibu, find the cement ramp near the water channel. Get a good start from the parking lot across the street and clear the channel heading west. 19. Find the other cement ramp south of the Malibu and jump 18, along the same strip of grassy land on the channel. Hit the ramp heading south, and clear the bridge. 20. On the top level of the construction building is a girder that angles upward and angles off to the North. Use the PCJ 600 to speed down and off this girder to complete the stunt. Washington Beach 21. Start on the west of the channel and jump the small bridge that goes across the water. Back all the way up to the Starfish Island Bridge, and then speed down the street to hit the dirt pile and sail over the channel. 22. While completing jump 21, you may have noticed the cement ramp south of the Starfish Bridge. Use it to jump over the dirt mound of 21 and the channel to complete jump 22. 23. At the first jump in PCJ Playground. Jump the wooden ramp over the rooftop of the building on the corner, and then jump over the ramp on the rooftop and land on top of the second building to the south. 24. In the same alley as jump 26, another, similar set of metal stairs waits on the building to the right. Jump across the street and over or on top of the building to the north in the next alley. 25. The stairway for this jump is across the alley from 24; the stairs Lance perched on. Approach from the east. Build up speed from the beach wall and drive west, then steer between the phone pole and the corner of the building and go up the stairs. Jump over the building to the west, over the street, and land near the Police Station. 26. Jump the large flight of metal stairs in the alley. Sail across the street heading north and land on the building across the street. 27. North of 28 in the same alleyway. Jump a similar stack of pallets, but heading south. Jump over the street and land on the building or far enough to trigger the jump animation. Ocean Beach 28. Use the rooftop vents to jump from the top of the two-story white building on the corner, then fly over the street and land on the building to the east. 29. Jump from the ramp close to the Shotugn power up on the rooftop parking lot of Washington Mall. Go over the street, heading east, and land on the Beach Scooter store. 30. Jump the stack of two pallets in the alley and land on the rooftop of the building to the north, on the left side of the alley. 31. Jump from the ramp of the Cone Crazy (car park) rooftop, heading south, and land on the roof of the Collars & Cuffs building. 32. Use the stairs beneath the white building on stilts to jump south. Clear across the adjacent building across the next street, and land on the pink rooftop. Use a bike and back all the way down the alley to the north to gain speed. 33. Continue your steam from the previous jump and hit the ramp on the pink rooftop. Jump the street, still heading south, and land on the rooftop of the next building. 34. Use the PCJ 600 to jump from the north pier (near the Colonel's yacht) to the south pier. 35. Launch from the pier used in jump 34, then continue racing over the following wooden ramp to reach the southernmost pier. Prawn Island 36. Use a PCJ 600 to jump the ramp on the roof of the southernmost corner building-you'll soar over the film studio wall and land in the studio's back lot. Use sloped stairs of the northern building behind it to access the correct ramp's rooftop. -------------------------------------------- | 14. Frequently Answered Questions | -------------------------------------------- ------------------------------- | http://boards.gamershrine.com | ------------------------------- Question and Answer from Gamespot to Rockstar --------------------------------------------- To find out more about the technical aspects and inspiration behind the graphics of the forthcoming Vice City, we sat down with Adam Fowler, one of Rockstar North's technical directors, and Aaron Garbut, the company's art director.
