It may not be sold, modified, or reproduced in any form without the express written consent of the author. It may not be posted on any website other than http://www.gamefaqs.com, http:// www.kongming.net, or http://www.neoseeker.com. NOTE: As of 07 / 31 / 04, I have decided not to grant permission to sites other than the 3 listed above to post my FAQS. I'll still be glad to answer any relevant gameplay questions, however. Keoi, Samurai Warriors, Electronic Arts, Omega Force and all related names and characters are trademarks of their respective owners. This FAQ is a character FAQ for the three edit characters in Koei's "Samurai Warriors" game. It will tell you everything you need to know about the moves, weapons, stages, and items obtainable for all three edit character types. Please note that this FAQ will not discuss the method of creating and training a new general. If you are curious about this, see EChang's excellent FAQ. While on the subject of EChang, I would like to take the opportunity to thank him for making available the mission and weapon requirements, without which I would not have been able to write this FAQ. I have revised and modified them all to reflect the American names and my personal experience playing the game. The methods for getting the 5th weapons were all developed by me. v 1.1 Additions: Fixed grammatical errors, fixed the erroneous mention of "Arabian Saddle" in the "Obtaining the Tombo-Giri" section, added a (hopefully soon to be completed) "Skills you can earn while training" section. Any information about these would be greatly appreciated. v. 1.2 Additions: Added Kongming's Archive's to the list of sites allowed to host this guide. Added "Discern" to the "Skills You Can Earn While Training" section. v. 1.21 Additions: Added an "addendum" to the method for getting the 5th Naginata, as so many people on the boards seemed to be having trouble with it. V 1.3 Additions: Added neoseeker to the list of sites allowed to post the guide, added a note about HARD mode for 5th weapons, and added info from Bret Fellers. Credited Bret Fellers for his info. V 1.31 Additions: Added an addendum to the Douji-kiri section with additional info on keeping Nobufusa Baba alive. Revised the Douji-kiri strategy to make it more effective. Thanks to CKJO3@aol.com for inspiring me to recheck the strategy. V 1.32 Additions: Added a tip from Richard Smith for getting Okuni to appear in training. Credited Richard Smith. My apologies for taking so long to update. NOTE: PLEASE read the methods and addenda for the 5th weapons, as there are many helpful hints there that I did not see fit to put into the "Requirements" sections. 2. Attacks a) Sword Character: SSSS(SSSS) - Your character will slash sideways 3 times, his (or her) blade will light up, and he will slash sideways four more times, ending with a forward slash that knocks the enemy down. X+S - Your character will jump and slash forward with his sword. T(TTT) - Your character's blade will glow as he does a slash up and to the right. Pressing T multiple times causes him to follow this slash with a downward slash left, a whirling slash to bring the blade over his head, and a final downward slash that releases a white "arrow" of energy straight in front of him. X=T - Your character will jump, then slam the ground with his swordpoint facing down, knocking down nearby enemies. ST(TTT) - Your character will slash; then his blade will glow as he does an upward slash and leaps into the air after his enemy, dealing several blows before knocking the enemy down. The impact of the falling enemy can damage nearby foes, as well. SST(TTT) - Your character will slash twice, then follow with one powerful slash upward on each side and one strong slash forward. SSST(TTT) - Your character will slash 3 times, then slash sideways 5 more times, moving side to side as he goes. This is similar to the fully-powered SSSS move, but is much faster and does not end with a forward slash. Musou - Your character will move forward, slashing with his sword. The True Musou adds fire damage and a few additional hits, ending with a strong slash to knock enemies away. b) Spear Character: SSSS(SSSS) - A downward slash, followed by a straight slash, a slash upward bringing the spear behind the character's back, then two slashes up and down and a final downward slash to knock the opponent away, is the intricate series of strikes for this attack. X+S - Your character jumps in the air and slashes with his spear. T(TTT) - Your character spins his spear over his head 4 times, ending with a strong downward slash. X+T - Your character jumps, then slams the ground, knocking down nearby foes. ST(TTTT) Your character slashes, knocks the opponent into the air, stabs him with 4 quick forward slashes, knocks him into the air again, then finally dashes forward to knock him away. SST(TTT) - Your character slashes twice, then slashes up to bring the spear behind his back and finally finishes by slamming his spear into the ground in front of him, knocking away nearby enemies and breaking the guard of those who block. SSST(TTT) - Your character slashes 3 times, then holds his spear as he charges energy, finally whipping the spear in a half-circle arc in front of him, knocking away all nearby enemies. Additional presses of T will yield longer charging time but greater damage and attack radius. Musou - Like the Sword Character, the Spear Character slashes in front of himself several times. The True Musou adds fire damage and additional hits, and ends with a whirling slash to knock the opponent away. c) Naginata Character: SSSS(SSSS) - Your character slashes 3 times, follows with 4 slashes (2 to the right and 2 to the left), then finishes with a strong upward slash to knock the enemy away. X+S - Your character jumps in the air and slashes with his naginata. T(TTT): Your character will charge briefly, then slash right, left to bring the naginata behind his back, and finally right once again. X+T - Your character will jump, then slam the ground, knocking the foe away. ST(TTT) - Your character will slash, then slash upward, followed by a sideways slash and concluding with a strong sideways slash to knock the opponent away. SST(TTT) - Your character will slash twice, then slash left, slash right, and finally slash strongly to the left. SSST(TTT) - Your character will slash thrice, then slash strongly to the left. He will then briefly charge, whirl the blade as he brings it over his head, then slash hard to the right. Musou - The same as the other two edit characters, but with a Naginata. The same goes for the true Musou. d) General: attacks shared by all 3 Edit Characters: Mounted attack - Your character will slash three times with his weapon, then stab downward 4 times before finishing with a final thrust. If T is pressed before the fourth hit, your character will finish his combo with a strong upward thrust of his weapon. Ranged Attack - Press R1 to take out your bow, then use S to fire. You have unlimited ammunition. 3. Stage Flowchart for "A New Hero's Tale": All three character types use the same set of stages, viz.: 1. The Battle of Okehazama 2. The Battle of Kawanakajima 3. The Battle of Nagashino 4. Siege of Ueda Castle 5a. Siege of Osaka - Summer (upper path, Toyotomi side) OR 5b. Siege of Osaka - Summer (lower path, Tokugawa side) Branchpoint: Stage 4, Siege of Ueda Castle. On the final floor, you will face Hanzo Hattori and Yukimura Sanada. Defeating Hanzo takes you to the upper route, while defeating Yukimura will take you to the lower one. 4. To make describing things easier, I'll assume you have a lantern. The first location is found by going right (your arrow points --> on the map) from the start until you can go down. Instead of going left when you can, continue downward into the next room and Kunoichi will appear. Kunoichi also appears near the enemy general shown by a red dot on the in-game map. It doesn't matter which one you choose to defeat.] IX. Second Time - Eliminate Kunoichi! Getting the 5th weapons (easily) In this section I will provide a detailed list of the requirements to get each of the three 5th weapons for the Edit Characters. In addition, I will provide a list of recommended equipment and a detailed method of how to acquire the weapon. I recommend that you use the easy AI trick to help you. To use it, start a game on any difficulty other than Easy, then save and exit. Go to the options screen, change the difficulty to Easy, then restart your saved game. The enemies will attack and block less frequently, though their stats will be unchanged. ALL 5th WEAPONS MUST BE OBTAINED ON HARD DIFFICULTY OR HIGHER. The requirements for the weapons come initially from EChang's "Level 5 Weapons FAQ," with modifications (substantial in the case of the Douji-kiri) based on my own experience. The equipment lists and methods were all devised and tested by me, however. Getting the Douji Kiri: Requirements: In the "Battle of Nagashino" stage: 1) Quickly clear Nagashino Castle of enemies by defeating the reserve captain and general there 2) Charge into the field and defeat Toshide Maeda, Nagahide Niwa, and Kazimasu Takigawa (This is not STRICTLY a requirement, but it's so hard to get the weapon without doing this that it might as well be.) Also seal the stronghold nearest Nobufusa (again, not a requirement, but it really helps). [Note, the stronghold will likely be ABOVE your current position.] 3) Dash back to your main camp and defeat the ambush party general there before Keiji arrives 4) When Keiji arrives and says, "Katsuyori! Ready to part with your head?" stay near your captain and fight Keiji and his troops, but make sure that neither you nor your allies defeat Keiji 5) Hanzo Hattori will approach Nagashino Castle. You will fail the mission to defeat Keiji, but just keep on fending him off, defending your camp, and not defeating him for now. 6) After a while, Kunoichi or Yukimura will defeat Hanzo. Yukimura will say, "My lord! Our forces have been routed!" and advise Katsuyori to retreat. If you did things right, you should receive a message telling you that he's retreating to the south. 7) By now, Nobufusa Baba should be the ONLY surviving general other than you and your commander, and only Keiji, Nobunaga, and Nobufusa should be alive on the enemy side. Get Keiji to follow you (you may have to strike him to do this), and slowly lure him to Nobufusa's position. If Keiji has enough health, Nobufusa will be routed. It is possible that Keiji's troops will eventually defeat him, but this is a surefire way to rout Nobufusa and get the message: "Nobufusa Baba has died bravely defending the rear flank!" Keiji will say, "A true warrior's death. I wish I could go that beautifully one day." 8) The supply unit will appear near Nagashino Castle. Defeat the captain for the weapon. Recommended Equipment: Power Bracer Matsukaze Saddle Battle Drum Tengu Sandals Himiko's Rune A strong bodyguard team. The method: There isn't much to say beyond what's listed in the requirements. Be wary of the horse barricades and musketeers when charging into the field. Save often when fighting the three generals there to minimize the chance that they will heal. C2, and your SSSS(SSS) attack work best. When fighting Keiji, if he pulls off a Musou and knocks you away, it's okay to let him heal. You can get him to chase you and not harass your commander. While waiting for Hanzo's defeat, be sure to beat Mitsuhide and any other generals that come to your camp, taking care not to defeat Keiji while you do. Run to the nearby strongholds if you need health recovery items. [Addendum: To save Nobufusa and ensure that he dies at the right time, it is highly recommended that you take out the gate captains near him and Katsuie Shibata before thwarting the ambush. Remember that you have until Keiji arrives at your main camp to thwart it. Clearing the area around Nobufusa of enemies before rushing back to your camp will help him live until after Hanzo's defeat at the hands of Kunoichi or Yukimura. After your Yukimura advises Katsuyori to retreat, you can either wait for Keiji's soldiers to slay Nobufusa, or slowly lure Keiji himself out of your camp to get him to fight Nobufusa personally. Either technique should result in Nobufusa's heroic sacrifice for the Takeda forces and the appearance of the supply unit carrying the Douji-kiri near Nagashino Castle.] Getting the Tombo-giri: Requirements: In the upper-path "Seige of Osaka--Summer" stage: 1) Lure the two enemy generals to the Sanada-Maru as instructed 2) Defeat the enemy cannons before they enter firing range, as instructed 3) Assist Yukimura in returning to his camp 4) Successfully repel Masamune Date's assault on Osaka Castle 5) Support Yukimura's charge on the Tokugawa camp 6) When the camp's MAIN gates open, enter the camp through them before Yukimura does 7) The supply unit will appear. Defeat the captain for the weapon Recommended Equipment: Battle Drum Matsukaze Saddle Tengu Sandals Cloak of Might War Rations A strong bodyguard team The method: The requirements are exactly the same as those for Yukimura, save the necessity of beating him into the enemy camp's main gates and the non-necessity of getting 1000 KOs. After you've stopped the cannons, ignore Yukimura and head to the area below your main camp. Defeat the two generals there (one is named Uesugi), then proceed to defeat all of the other generals you can reach while Yukimura heads to his base camp. When he starts returning to his post, hurry up and finish off any general you happen to be fighting, then dash up to Osaka Castle to confront Masamune Date when he arrives. Take care not to let him get knocked forward into Osaka castle, or you will fail the mission. Also keep a close eye on Yukimura, as it's imperative that he not lose too much health. When Date is repelled and most of his army obliterated, seal any strongholds near you and below that you haven't yet reached, but make sure that you reach the main camp soon after Yukimura does, if not before. If you manage to reach it ahead of him, you can actually get inside the gates that close behind him, and not have to worry about the defense captains at all. Defend him until he has been rescued. When the Tokugawa camp NORTH gates open, a supply unit will appear. This one carries the Warrior's Tale, NOT the weapon, so you can let it retreat. Once you've defended Yukimura, he will defeat the general guarding the camp's main gate. When you get the message that the main gate is open, dash into it before Yukimura does. The supply unit will appear; track it down and defeat the captain for the weapon, then slay Ieyasu Tokugawa to end the stage. Getting the Benkei: Requirements: In the "Battle of Okehazama" stage: 1) Defeat all enemy generals and sub-generals other than Nobunaga before he successfully charges your main camp 2) The supply unit will appear near the enemy camp; track it down and defeat the captain for the weapon Recommended Equipment: Power Bracer Matsukaze Saddle Tengu Sandals Himiko's Rune An item of your choice (Warrior's Tale, Vixen Tail, or Solar Gem are all good choices, as is the Battle Drum) A strong bodyguard team The method: This method is fairly amusing and easy, at least if you do what I did. It is useful to have a fourth weapon before attempting this, though a good third will serve you adequately, if necessary. First, travel up and to your left, defeating one of the generals there. Continue defeating generals until you recieve a message to the effect that "Nobunaga Oda's unit is on the march!" At this point, drop whatever you're doing, dash over to Nobunaga and knock him off his horse. Now go up and defeat his sub-officer, Hideyoshi. Next, return to Nobunaga and steal his horse. He will continue to fight your allies on foot, but it will take him quite a while. In the mean time, move around the map on his steed, defeating enemy generals. End by going to the Oda main camp. There is one sub-officer outside, and one general inside. Defeat them and the supply unit will appear near the camp; hunt it down and defeat the captain for the weapon, then run back to your main camp and beat Nobunaga. Finish off the rest of the easy missions to end the stage. Note that you can use Matsukaze rather than Nobunaga's horse once he's been dismounted if you prefer; I just enjoy adding insult to injury. [Addendum: I've seen so many disgruntled posts on the message board about this that I decided to add a little bit more info. First, you MUST complete the first mission given to you to be able to get the weapon, and you must complete it BEFORE doing any of the others. Second, it can be helpful to defeat the troops with Hideyoshi and Nobunaga if you have time. Third, Nobunaga won't advance as quickly if you knock him off his horse and fight him for a while. Stealing his horse after fighting with him, using the "Easy AI Trick," and remembering to equip a Battle Drum can do wonders to make this weapon easier to obtain. Using a low-level character also helps.] 7. Items: These are items obtainable in Edit Character stages: Horse Armor: Decreases the chance of being forcefully dismounted. How to obtain it: In the "Battle of Nagashino" stage, clear "Nagashino" and "Prodigy," then clear "Spear and Musket" and defeat Hanzo Hattori before he reaches Nagashino castle. When "Rain of Fire" appears, charge into Nobunaga's camp without defeating his sub-generals. A supply unit will appear nearby; defeat the captain for the item. Warrior's Tale: A training manual for bodyguards [sc. "that is used to make them stronger in battle"] How to obtain it: In the upper path "Seige of Osaka - Summer" stage, complete the missions "Supporter," "Resolve" and "To the Death." When you get the message that Yukimura has been rescued, the supply unit will appear; defeat the captain for the weapon. War Rations: Replenishes the life meter [to 50%] one time when it reaches zero. How to obtain it: While training a new general, obtain a Jump rating of over 130 and select Combo. Hanzo will challenge you; defeat him to get this item. Be warned that he clones himself, so roll and use your True Musou if he is too much for you to handle. Use the second bonus character model, and have an initial Jump rating of at least 115. Unlock Combo by beating Melee 3 times, then beat Burst until your Jump score is high enough. If you memorize the path you should have no problem getting an "S" rating consistently. 8. Additional Character Models: Though the game gives you several models from which to choose, you can unlock 4 additional ones. To do so, obtain an Attack rating greater than 55 by the time you have 8 months left. If no other events interrupt things at this point, a strike ninja will challenge you. He is VERY strong and can only be defeated (or, at least, damaged appreciably) by a Musou attack. Be warned that one charge attack from him will lilkely kill you. He sometimes brings along another strike ninja, and always brings along several henchmen. He tends to block your Musou, but after you've used it twice your Master will drop a Spirit Mirror, and that should give you the edge you need. It's best to attempt this fight right after you die. Quickly skip the fight's opening dialogue so you can move, then nail the strike ninja with your Musou when you can. When you've unlocked the first bonus model, use him to get the others, as he starts out with a considerable bonus in the Attack rating of at least one of the three weapons. [Addendum: I have seen on the message boards that the actual requirement may be a combined Attack / Defense total of 90 in one melee weapon. I haven't personally confirmed this, and never had trouble getting the strike ninja to appear when my weapon attack was greater than 55, but enough people have mentioned it that I think it worth noting.] 9. To Be Added - Skills you can earn while training Discern - Achieve a Speed rating of 144 or greater and select Burst. Goemon will challenge you. Beat him and your character will learn the "Discern" skill. Reach: From Bret Fellers: Achieve an attack rating of around 70 and choose Melee to get Keiji to challenge you. Beat him to learn Reach. (Note: Richard Smith and others have noted that you may actually need an Attack Rating of 90 to get Keiji to appear.) Rage: Obtain a Mounted Attack rating of around 70 and choose Riding to get Masamune Date to challenge you. Beat him to learn Rage. Drive: From Richard Smith: Achieve a Mounted Defense rating of over 60 and choose Melee to get Okuni to appear. Beat the drum 100 times while avoiding Goemon's attack to learn Drive. Musket: Not really a skill. If you obtain an archery score of 68 or above and choose archery, Magoichi will challenge you. Beat him, and your character's ranged weapon will now be a musket instead of a bow. I will add these as soon as I know more. I'll be glad to credit anyone who has information about the exact requirements for making characters appear. Information on Kunoichi, Ranmaru, and Dokkimaru would be especially appreciated. 10.
