[[INTO]___] Introduction Assassin's Creed has no subtitles. Hopefully this may help those who cannot hear or understand the dialogue, those who want to brush up on what's said, or those who missed certain parts. This whole thing is a labor of love... many hours of watching and replaying scenes two or more times each went into it. It is extremely accurate, but naturally there will be mistakes. There are also occassionally sections where I could not understand what was said, or when there wasn't enough time for me to write everything down. These parts are marked with asterisks (*) and will be fixed as updates continue. In addition, I know this is a Canadian game, but I'm an American and use the spelling most familiar to me. Sorry. It follows that I am playing the North American, PS3 version of the game. However, I do not know of any version differences in the script (at this time). I appreciate corrections on the text and suggestions for improvement as a whole at my e-mail, sarranduin at gmail dot com- please place "AC script" or similar in the subject line. [Version 0.4- see note in Version History!!] [_[WRNG]__] Warnings and disclaimers Assassin's Creed, Altaïr, and all other characters, plots, and game components are copyright Ubisoft Entertainment. I receive no money or compensation of any kind for writing this. Permission is NOT given to reproduce this in any form on any website, or in any other form of public distribution without my express, written approval! Any reproduction not for personal and private use is a violation of copyright. This version has been submitted to GameFAQs.com, and will also appear linked to or on Neoseeker.com and GameSpot.com- please contact me if it is anywhere else. Please buy or rent the game instead of just reading this- although I vaguely describe things beyond what's plainly said, it's not worth missing. Reviewers who say it's repetitive are lying and didn't play the game the way it was supposed to. Obviously, this guide contains spoilers for sections of the game you haven't reached yet. You have been warned. [_[VRSN]__] Version History 0.3 (Jan 19, 2008) - Finished storyline through Memory Block 2 and beginning Block 3. Lucy's first three e-mails included. 0.4 (Jan 29, 2008) - Dialogue re-format. "Rough-draft" text of Memory Block 3 and 4's first section. NOTE ON CURRENT VERSION: The new part, Garnier through Abu'l, is a rough draft copied onto a borrowed PC, from written notes of the game's dialogue. It is still fairly accurate, but I have only listened to most parts once. As a result, there will be numerous errors and mild gapping in places. I do not really want correction e-mails on the "in-Animus" sections yet, as they will be proofread against the game again as soon as my laptop is fixed. Thanks. [NEWG]___] (The main character, Altaïr Ibn La-Ahad, appears in a garden-like place. Seven faceless women surround him. A deep voice speaks.) Voice: *I abide my thought to no wisdom. And to man the same folly. I perceive that this also was the chasing of the wind. With much wisdom is much grief.* And he that increaseth knowledge increaseth sorrow. (The scene changes to a city square with a fountain in the middle. A large number of faceless citizens wander about.) Woman's voice: We've got a problem! I can't anchor him to the memory. Too much psychological trauma. He's rejecting the treatment. Retreating. Man's voice: Desmond, I need you to try and relax. Woman: Let me try and stabilize it. Man: Focus. Listen to the sound of my voice. Recognize that what you're seeing isn't real... just a picture of the past. It can't hurt you. Woman: Dammit! It's not working. Man: Give it a moment, Ms. Stillman... he'll adjust. The first time is never easy. Woman: We're losing him! Man: That's enough, Ms. Stillman! Woman: We need to pull him out. Now. Man: Alright, Desmond. We're going to try and bring you out now. [AD1M]___] Abstergo Laboratory - Day 1 Morning (The scene changes to first person view, staring at a ceiling. A man gasps and sits up as the woman, Lucy Stillman, bends over him.) Lucy: Are you okay? (A man, Desmond Miles, is shown lying on a large machine. He begins sitting up as Lucy walks to a computer screen and the man whose voice was heard before, Dr. Warren Vidic stands nearby.) Vidic: I told you he'd be fine. Desmond: Bastards! Vidic: Now, now. I just saved your life. D: Saved my life?! You kidnapped me! Strapped me into that... thing! V: Animus. It's an Animus. D: I don't even know you people! Why are you doing this to me?! V: You have information we need, Mr. Miles. D: Information?! I'm a bartender for crissakes! What do you want me to do? Teach you how to mix a martini?! V: We know who you are... what you are. D: I don't know what you're talkin' about. V: Don't play coy with me... there isn't time. You're an Assassin. And whether you realize it or not, you've got something that my employers want. Locked away in that head of yours. D: But I'm not an Assassin. Not anymore. V: Yes... your file indicated as much... something about an "escape." Most fortunate for us. D: What do you want from me? V: For you to do as you're told. The Animus will allow us to locate what we need. Once we have it, you'll be free to go. D: I am not goin' back in there! V: Then we'll induce a coma and continue our work. When we're done, you'll be left to die. Truth be told, the only reason you're still conscious is because this approach saves us time. D: You're insane! V: So what is it, Mr. Miles? Live, or die? Lie down. (Desmond finally does so.) A wise decision. (First person view again- a visor slides over and a logo and a number of options appear.) D: Whoa... where am I? V: You're inside the Animus. D: Which is...? V: It's a projector which renders genetic memories in three dimensions. D: Genetic memories... V: Seems you'll need a bit of a tutorial... very well. Let's start simple. What is a memory, Mr. Miles? (A brain shows on the visor.) D: It's the... recollection of a past event. V: ...specific to the individual remembering the event. (A woman's sillhouette.) D: Yeah, sure. V: What if I told you the human body not only housed an individual's memories, but the memories of his ancestors as well? Genetic memory, if you will. (A bird is shown.) Migration, hibernation, reproduction... how do animals know when and where to go? What to do? D: That's just animal instinct. V: Now you're arguing semantics, Mr. Miles. Whatever you call it, the fact remains. These creatures hold the knowledge absent the first-hand experience. I've spent the last thirty years trying to understand why. (A symbolic genetic strand is shown.) Our DNA functions as an archive. It contains not only genetic instructions passed down from previous generations, but memories as well. The memories of our ancestors. D: And the Animus lets you decode and read these DNA files. V: Precisely. Lucy: But there's a problem. This is the specific memory we're trying to access. (The Animus highlights a memory at the end of the strand.) Unfortunately, when we try to open the memory, your mind withdraws. You lack the confidence to step into your ancestor's body. That's what happened earlier. You got knocked out of the target memory and pushed back into a more stable state. D: Why? L: It's your subconcious. It's resisting. We found similar reactions among patients who undergo hypnosis to relive traumatic events. They can't jump directly into the specific memory. You need to be eased in. Even then there can be problems. D: So how do we fix it? L: We find a memory you CAN synchronize with. And we move forward from there. You'll get used to it. This is the closest we can get. (The Animus highlights the first memory "block.") So it's where we'll have to start. I'm uploading the tutorial program now. [_[TTRL]__] Tutorial (The Animus loads and Altaïr is shown in the "memory corridor.") Animus voice: Warning... data stream unstable. Attempting to restore synchronization. (...) Hello, Subject 17. This tutorial has been prepared to better acclimate you to the Animus' control system. Instructions will follow shortly. (...) The Synchronization Bar represents how in-sync you are with your ancestor's memories. If you ever fall completely out of sync, the Animus will restore you to your last synchronized position. You are currently dangerously close to de-synchronization. Please follow all forth-coming instructions in order to restore system stability. (...) The Animus utilizes a puppeteering concept to control the actions of your ancestor. Unloading subroutines for your body's adaptations to the Animus. Begin by exploring the default actions of each input. (Scene changes slightly- there are several NPCs nearby.) AV: While standing still, use the Head button to observe your environment. (Altaïr looks around at the NPCs in first person view. Now there is a large number of women carrying jars on their heads walking in line.) AV: You can use your Empty Hand [button] to walk through these jar-carriers without causing them to drop what they are holding. Proceed to the marker to continue the synchronization process. (Altaïr does so, carefully moving the women out of the way. The scene now goes empty.) AV: The Animus differentiates between fundamental actions: Low-profile and High-profile. Low-profile actions are socially acceptable. High-profile actions are more action-oriented. Hold the High-profile button to see how your Heads Up Display changes the context of the puppeteering inputs. (After doing so:) Excellent. (A male NPC is a way in-front.) AV: We will continue your synchronization process by testing some high-profile actions. Grab and throw this individual onto the marker, by using the Empty Hand button in high-profile. (Altaïr goes and violently pushes the man onto the glowing marker. A new marker appears a way off.) AV: Using your Legs button in high-profile will allow you to sprint. Sprinting is useful to escape from soldiers or to get closer to a fleeing target. However, be careful not to bump anyone- you can lose your balance and tumble to the ground. While sprinting, reach the marker before this man does. (The Animus indicates a soldier.) (Altaïr does so. The scene shifts and there's a new soldier facing away.) AV: The Animus can also provide other important information. The Social Status icon gives you information on your social status. The different states will be explained in context soon. (The soldier turns round- the SSi has a yellow circle.) This icon appears when a soldier is looking at you. The yellow color means he is unaware, or suspicious of who you are. To illustrate the change in awareness level, you will stealth assassinate this soldier. First, lock onto your target. Now select your Hidden Blade. With your blade selected, walk up to the soldier and assassinate him, by using your Armed Hand button. (Altaïr kills him and walks away. Another soldier comes out from behind a building. He inspects the dead one. The SSi turns red and flashes while a tone beeps.) AV: The dead soldier has alerted *this other one and changed his status to "informed." Any high profile action* will likely provoke an armed response. Provoke this soldier. (Altaïr does something "high-profile." The soldier calls out and begins running over. The SSi "unfolds" and turns to red.) AV: Notice how the Social Status icon has changed to "exposed." Use the ladder to try and try to break the line of sight. (Altaïr climbs a ladder on the building. The SSi is now yellow. There is a "garden" structure on the roof.) AV: Excellent. The line of sight has been broken. Now, run into the roof garden to hide from the soldier. (Altaïr jumps into the structure and hides. The SSi turns to blue and flashes. Another, lower, tone sounds.) AV: Good, your social status is "hidden" and the soldier is still looking for you. Wait until your social status changes again. (The soldier climbs up and looks around, but gives up and leaves. The SSi turns to green.) AV: Well done, the soldier has lost your track. You are now "anonymous," and you can exit the hide-spot. (Altaïr does so. Scene goes back to being empty.) AV: Being anonymous will fill your synchronization bar, and make your job as an Assassin easier. (...) There are different places which you can use to hide. However, you must always break the line of sight first. And then, use a hidespot to "vanish." (A bench with two people, a cart with hay, a roof garden, and a group of Scholars are shown. Then, a number of "informed" soldiers are loaded, with a marker beyond them.) AV: Let us continue with the demonstration of Blend. Blend can be activated with passive use of your Legs. You can mimic a Scholar and pass near soldiers without arousing suspicion. Use this to reach the marker behind the soldiers. (Altaïr walks slowly through them, hands folded, to the marker. Four NPCs are then shown.) AV: Now that you are funny synced, a new ability is available to you. Referred to as "Eagle Vision", this sixth sense helped your ancestor understand the intentions of people around him. (Altaïr uses this ability- there is a white information target, a yellow assassination target, a red enemy, and a blue ally.) AV: Well done. (...) Remember, Eagle Vision will only be available once you are fully synced. Please note that by following the Assassin's Creed, your ancestor's way of life, will assist you in staying in-sync. The Creed consists of three tenets. First, never hurt an innocent person. Second, always be discrete. Third, do not compromise the Clan. Should you ever lose sync, you can restore your synchronization by reliving key moments of your ancestor's life, or by respecting the Creed. (...) You have successfully completed the tutorial. The most stable memory block will now be loaded. (Memory corridor.) [BLK1]___] Memory Block 1 [_[B1P1]__] Solomon's Temple Voice: Wait! There must be another way- this one need not die! (Altaïr jumps upon and kills an old man. There are two other Assassins standing in a tunnel- Malik and Kadar.) Kadar: An excellent kill. Forture favors your blade. Altaïr: Not fortune... skill! Watch a while longer and you might learn. Malik: Indeed. He'll teach you how to disregard everything the Master's taught us. A: And how would you have done it? Mk: I would not have called attention to us. I would not have taken the life of an innocent. What I would have done is follow the Creed. A: "Nothing is true, everything is permitted." Understand these words. It matters not how we complete our task... only how it's done. Mk: This is not the way... A: My way is better. Mk: (He gestures in frustration) I will scout ahead. Try not to dishonor us further. K: What is our mission? My brother would say nothing to me... only that I should be honored to been invited. A: The Master believes the Templars have found something below the Temple *. K: Treasure? A: I do not know. All that matters is that the master considers it important, else he would not have asked me to retrieve it. (They go through the tunnel. Altaïr approaches and kills an unsuspecting soldier. They then enter high inside a rough stone chamber with a golden box across.) Mk: There! That must be the Ark! K: The Ark... of the Covenant? A: Don't be silly. There's no such thing. It's just a story. K: Then what is it? Mk: Quiet! Someone's coming! (Several Templars enter below.) Leader: I want this through this gate by sunrise! The sooner we possess it, the sooner we can turn our attention to those jackals at Masyaf! A: Robert de Sable! His life is mine! Mk: No! We would want to retrieve the treasure and deal with Robert only if necessary. A: He stands between us and it! I would say it's necessary! Mk: Discretion, Altaïr! A: You mean cowardice. That man is our greatest enemy... and here we have a chance to be rid of him! Mk: You have already broken two tenets of our Creed... now you would break the third. Do not compromise the Brotherhood! A: I am your superior, in both title and ability. You should know better than to question me. (Altaïr goes down and walks toward the Templars below.) A: Hold Templars! You are not the only ones with business here. Robert: Ah! Well, this explains my missing man. And what is it you want? A: Blood. (He lunges for Robert. Malik lunges for and tries to grab him, throwing him off just enough for Robert to grab him. They begin to struggle.) R: You know not the things in which you meddle, Assassin. I spare you only that you may return to your master and deliver a message: The Holy Land is lost to him and his. He should flee now while he has the chance. Stay, and all of you will die. (He pushes Altaïr through a wall, which collapses and cuts him off from the others.) R: (yelling) Men! To arms! Kill the Assassins! (Altaïr climbs through the Temple ruins, finally emerging through a window.) Animus: Skipping part of memory to a more recent one. [_[B1P2]__] Masyaf (Altaïr has returned to Masyaf. A man meets him.) Man: Altaïr! You've returned! A: Rauf. Rauf: It is good to see you unharmed. I trust your mission was a success. A: Is the master in his tower? Rauf: Yes yes... buried in his books as always. No doubt he expects you. A: My thanks, Brother. Rauf: Safety and peace, Altaïr. A: On you as well. (He leaves and goes through the town toward the fortress. Another Assassin greets him at the gate.) Assassin: Ah. He returns at last. A: Abbas. Abbas: Where are the others? Did you ride ahead hoping to be the first one back? I know you are loathe to share the glory. (...) Silence is just another form of assent. A: Have you nothing better to do? Abbas: I bring word from the master. He waits for you in the library. Best hurry... no doubt you're eager to put your tongue to his boot. A: Another word and I'll put my blade to your throat! Abbas: There'll be plenty of time for that later... "brother." (He steps aside. Altaïr enters the fortress gates. Several Assassin guards greet him with "It is an honor" and "The Master waits within." He enters the library and goes to the master, Al Mualim.) Al Mualim: Altaïr. A: Master. (He bows) AM: Come forward. Tell me of your mission. I trust you have recovered the Templar's treasure. A: There was some trouble, Master. Robert de Sable was not alone. AM: When does our work ever go as expected? It's our ability to adapt that makes us who we are. A: This time it was not enough. AM: What do you mean? A: I have failed you. AM: The treasure?! A: Lost to us. AM: And Robert? A: Escaped. AM: ... I send you, my best man, to complete a mission more important than any that has come before. And you return to me with nothing but apologies and excuses! A: I did... AM: Do not speak! Not another word! This is not what I expected. (He paces) We'll need to mount another force. A: I swear to you I'll find him! I'll go... AM: No! You'll do nothing! You've done enough! Where are Malik and Kadar? A: Dead. (Malik enters.) Malik: No! Not dead! AM: Malik! Mk: I still live at least! AM: And your brother? Mk: Gone. Because of you! (He points to Altaïr.) A: Robert through me from the roof! There was no way back, nothing I could do. Mk: Because you would not heed my warning!! All of this could have been avoided!! And my brother... my brother would still be alive! Your arrogance nearly cost us victory today! AM: Nearly? Mk: I brought what your favorite failed to find. Here! Take it. (Another Assassin brings forth an ornate golden object.) Mk: Though it seems I have returned with more than just treasure.... (An Assassin runs up.) Assassin: Master! We are under attack! Robert de Sable lays siege to Masyaf's village! AM: So he seeks a battle! Very well. I'll not deny him. Go. Inform the others. The fortress must be prepared. As for you, Altaïr, our discussion will have to wait. You must make for the village. Destroy these invaders. Drive them from our home! A: It will be done. Animus: Fast-forwarding memory to a more recent one. (Altaïr stands outside the library. People are running in, Assassins out. Rauf comes over near the gate.) Rauf: Altaïr! It's good you've come. We need your help! A: What has happened? Rauf: Templars. They attack the village. Most of our people were able to get away... most, but not all. A: What do you need me to do? Rauf: Distract the Templars. Keep them occupied while I rescue those still trapped inside. A: As you wish. (Altaïr heads through the village, fighting Templars along the way. When he nears the gates, the Assassins begin their retreat back to the fortress.) Abbas: Break off the attack and return to Masyaf! Al Mualim commands it! Animus: Fast-forwarding memory to a more recent one. (Altaïr is inside Masyaf's fortress. He begins to approach the library, but Rauf, standing on a tower calls to him.) Rauf: Altaïr, come. Al Mualim's not done with us yet. A: Where are we going? Rauf: Up there. We've a surprise planned for our guests. Just do as I do. It should become clear soon enough. (Altaïr climbs up after him.) Rauf: Stand on that platform, Altaïr. (Altaïr walks over and stands on some wooden planks, looking way down to Robert and his army outside the fortress.) Robert: Heretic! Return what you have stolen from me! AM: (On the fortress walls) You've no claim to it, Robert! Take yourself from here before I'm forced to thin your ranks further! R: You play a dangerous game! AM: I assure you, this is no game! R: So be it!! Bring forth the hostage! (An Assassin novice is brought forward and killed.) R: Your village lays in ruins and your stores are hardly endless! How long before your fortress crumbles from within? How disciplined will your men remain when the wells run dry and their food is gone? AM: My men do not fear death, Robert! They welcome it, and the rewards it brings! R: Good! Then they shall have it *all along!* Rauf: (low-voiced) Follow me, and do so without hesitation. AM: (indicating the Assassins above) Show these fool knights what it is to have no fear! Go to God! (Altaïr, Rauf, and another do a "leap of faith" into hay piles below. Rauf's companion: Aaagh-ohh!! Oh my leg! Aah! Oh my leg! Rauf: Quiet... or the Templars will hear us! (Altaïr comes over.) Rauf: I'll stay behind and tend him. You'll have to go ahead without us. The ropes there will lead you to a trap we've set. Go and release it. Bring death upon our enemies! (Altaïr navigates a number of beams and climbs up the side of a tower. He unsheathes his sword and lets loose some logs onto Robert's men. They retreat.) Animus: Fast-forwarding memory to a more recent one. (Altaïr stands before Al Mualim outside the library.) AM: You did well to drive Robert from here. His force is broken. It should be a long while before he troubles us again. Tell me, do you know why it is you are successful? You listened! Were it that you had listened in Solomon's Temple, Altaïr. All of this would have been avoided. A: I did as I was asked. AM: No, you did as you pleased! *The others* told me of the arrogance you displayed- your disregard for our ways! (Two Assassins grab and hold Altaïr.) A: What are you doing?! AM: There are rules. We are nothing if we do not abide by the Assassiun's Creed: three simple tenets, which you seem to forget. (He grabs Altaïr briefly.) I will remind you. First and foremost: Stay your blade... A: ...from the flesh of an innocent. I know. (Al Mualim slaps him.) AM: And stay your tongue! Unless I give you leave to use it. If you are so familiar with this tenet, then why did you kill the old man inside the Temple? He was innocent! He did not need to die. Your insolence knows no bounds. Be mindful of your heart child, or I swear I will tear it from you with my own hands. The second tenet is that which gives us strength: Hide in plain sight. Let the people mask you such that you become one with the crowd. Do you remember?! Because as I hear it, you chose to expose yourself, drawing attention before you struck! (...) The third and final tenet... the worst of all your betrayals. Never compromise the Brotherhood. It's meaning should be obvious. Your actions must never bring harm upon us- direct or indirect! Yet your selfish act beneath Jerusalem placed us all in danger!! Worse still: you brought the enemy to our home! Every man we lost today was lost because of you! (He draws a small blade from his belt.) I am sorry... truly I am. But I cannot abide a traitor. A: I am not a traitor! AM: Your actions indicate otherwise. And so you leave me no choice. Peace be upon you, Altaïr. (He stabs him.) (The memory block comes to an end.) [AD1E]___] Abstergo Laboratory - Day 1 Evening (Desmond's view of the ceiling again. Lucy and Vidic stand over him.) Vidic: He's experiencing a far better adoption-rate than the other subjects! Lucy: I'm still pulling him out. He's been in there way too long. V: No not yet! We're still so far from where we need to be! L: We shouldn't risk it. V: What's another hour or two?! L: Why don't we discuss this in the conference room? Give Desmond a minute to stretch his legs. V: I really don't see the need... L: Warren! Please. (She storms off to the conference room) V: Fine! (He follows her) (Desmond slowly sits up and stands as the two leave. They can be heard vaguely through the walls. He enters the bathroom and stands on the counter to listen.) V: ...I don't appreciate your questioning my authority in front of the prisoner! There's a word for that. I believe it's called insubordination. L: And I don't appreciate you trying to kill him! There's a word for that too- I believe it's called stupid! V: Lucy! This isn't my decision. I don't like the deadline, but I'm smart enough not to challenge them. Do you want to wind up like Leila? L: I know the accident has everyone on edge. V: Which is why it's no time to coddle him! L: If you push him too hard, he'll shut down. And then we'll have nothing. V: We have nothing now! L: But we do. You just need to have a little faith. V: Fine. But I want you thinking of ways to improve his staying power. We can't afford to stop every time the man breaks a sweat. It's bad enough we have to trace through all these... useless memories. L: I'll do what I can. (Desmond jumps down and enters the main room as the others are.) V: We're done for today, Mr. Miles. I suggest you go to your room and get some rest. (Vidic leaves. Desmond approaches Lucy.) L: So you're really an Assassin? Like Altaïr? Desmond: Yes and no. L: What do you mean? D: I was supposed to be one, but I ran away from the Farm when I was sixteen. L: Farm? D: Yeah that's what they call the place where I grew up- the Farm. Like Masyaf I guess. Only not so uh... creepy. Just a small community in the middle of nowhere. About thirty of us livin', you know, off the grid. L: Why? D: Thought my parents were just crazy hippies, tryin' to stick it to the Man, you know? My dad was always goin' on about our enemies... how they'd be looking for us. How'd we'd have to be prepared. No one ever came. Nothing ever happened. L: Why'd you run away? D: I couldn't never leave the compound! You have any idea what it's like to be trapped in a place, knowing there was a whole world out there I'd never get to see? L: Don't you miss your parents? D: No. Far as I'm concerned, they weren't my parents. They were my wardens, and I was their prisoner. L: It sounds like they only wanted to protect you. D: With all that's happened... I don't know. I guess they were right. L: I'm sorry. I didn't mean to drudge up the past. D: It's alright. Gives me something to think about. L: Try and get some sleep. We've got a long day ahead of us tomorrow. (Desmond keeps talking to her...) D: I got a question for ya before I turn in. L: Sure. D: How did they find me? I mean... I haven't been anywhere near another Assassin for ten years. L: Dj'use your real name? D: Nope. Not before today. L: Credit cards? D: Cash only. L: Telephone? D: S'no one to call. L: Driver's license? D: Motorcycle... guilty pleasure. L: There's your answer. Photo. Fingerprint. D: This is a drug company! What does Abstergo have to do with the DMV? L: Desmond. These guys are everywhere. They... (she seems to remember the cameras or something) I... I'm sorry, I really can't talk about it. (Desmond wanders to his room.) D: Dammit, they locked the door. (If he checks the wardrobe:) Man, I can't even change my clothes! Desmond: Gotta say that's a little creepy, Doc... wakin' up to you standin' over me. You been watching me sleep? Vidic: We're always watching you! Now get up! We've got a lot of work to do! D: Ooh... I wonder who I get to kill today. V: Don't be so cavalier! Your ancestors almost had the right idea, Mr. Miles. If the deaths of a few people... evil people, no less... could save the lives of thousands more, well... it seems a small sacrifice. D: What do you mean "almost?" V: They didn't go far enough! To do use a rather tired analogy, corruption is no different than cancer. Cut out the tumors, but fail to treat the source and... well you're buying time at best. There's no true change to be had, without comprehensive, systemic intervention. D: Chemo for the masses. V: Education... re-education, to be more precise. But it's not easy. And it doesn't always take. D: Let me guess... you've got a better solution. What is it then? V: Ahaha. Now THAT would be telling! (Vidic walks out. Desmond walks into the main room and lies on the Animus.) [BLK2]___] Memory Block 2 [_[B2P1]__] Masun - Masyaf (Altaïr awakens in the library with Al Mualim behind the desk.) Altaïr: I am... alive. But I saw you stab me... felt death's embrace! Al Mualim: You saw what I wanted you to see... and then you slept the sleep of the dead. Of the womb... that you might awake, and be reborn. A: To what end? AM: Do you remember, Altair, what the Assassins fight for? A: Peace, in all things. AM: Yes, in all things! It is not enough to end the violence one man commits upon another. It refers to peace within as well. We cannot have one without the other. A: So it is said. AM: So it is! But you my son, have not found inner peace! It manifests in ugly ways! You are arrogant and over-confident. A: Were you not the one to say "nothing is true and everything is permitted?" AM: You do not understand the true meaning of the phrase, my child. It does not grant you the freedom to do as you wish, it is a knowledge meant to guide your senses. It expects a wisdom you clearly lack! A: Then what is to become of me? AM: I should kill you for the pain you came upon us. Malik thinks it only fair- your life in exchange for his brother's. But this would be a waste of my time and your talents. You'll see that you've been stripped of your positions. Your rank as well. You are a novice, a child once more. As you were on the day you first joined our order. I am offering you a chance at redemption... you'll earn your way back into the Brotherhood. A: I assume you have something planned. AM: First you must prove to me you remember how to be an Assassin. A: So you'd have me take a life? AM: No. Not yet, at least. For now you are to become a student once again. A: There is no need for this! AM: Others tracked your targets for you. No more. From today on you will track them yourself. A: If this is what you wish. AM: It is. A: Then tell me what it is I must do. AM: We have been betrayed. Someone was assisting Robert de Sable- one of our own. You must find him and bring him hear for questioning. A: What can you tell me of the traitor? AM: Ah... but that's just it. I've given you all I will. The rest is up to you. (Altaïr leaves the library. He has lost all of his weapons, etc. As he approaches the fortress gate, an Assassin addresses him.) Assassin: Safety and peace, Altaïr. A: You're in my way! As: Yes, Al Mualim has asked that I assist you... remind you how it is we hunt our prey. A: I know how it works. As: Be that as it may, I have no desire to disobey. A: Then be quick! As: The Assassin have many tools at their disposal. A: Yes, yes, we can eavesdrop, we can pickpocket, or we can use violence to intimidate. As: Good, then you remember. A: Then you'd have me walk amongst the others and learn what I can about the traitor. As: Yes, begin by going to the village market. That's where we first spotted the traitor. A: You know who it is?! As: Perhaps. A: Then give me a name and let's be done with it. As: That's not the way it works. Now go, and remember- begin you search in the village market. (He steps aside.) The basket weaver carries them for him. 2: That's no reason to stay silent. 1: Ah! But the weaver delievered him a letter just before the attack. I suspect it held the order to open the gate. 2: Then speak to the weaver! He can name Masun's accomplice. 1: He's disappeared! Hiding for fear of being dragged into this! 2: Heh! Probably inside of one of his own baskets! --------------- Memory: A man named Masun was the one who opened the gate. But he did not act alone. Lost yourself amongst the people there. When things have settled, I'll contact you again. As for I, I cannot leave here knowing Al Mualim continues to deny the freedom of these people. A new world is coming, one without war, without fear or pain, so I must help them anyway I can. You'll probably believe me foolish, but I must remain in Masyaf. It's Al Mualim who's betrayed us! You'll see! Soon, all your eyes will be opened to the truth! Tuesday's attack was but a first. More will follow unless you repent! Give up your wicked ways. Rise up against the madman of Masyaf! See through his lies! (Altaïr follows and punches the hell out of him) Masun: Enough... I yield, I yield! Altaïr: Speak quickly then. I've no interest in your games. Why did you betray us, and who do you serve? Masun: We serve the Templars. You should too. Their cause is just. A: We? Masun: Jamal. He told me of their plans. Asked me to open the gate. A: You betrayed us. We, who called you "brother" and kept you safe from harm. Masun: I did what I believed was right. And if you must kill me for it... so be it. I am not afraid to die. A: Your fate is not for me to decide. It's Al Mualim who will judge. Animus: Fast-forwarding memory to a more recent one. --------------- Memory: Masun did betray us! How do you answer to these charges? Masun: I deny nothing. I am proud of what I did! My only regret is that they failed. AM: I offer you a chance to repent... to renounce the evil in your heart. Masun: It is not evil in my heart, but truth! I will not repent. AM: Then you will die. (He stabs him.) You did well, Altaïr, and have earned the right to carry a blade once more. (He hands Altaïr the bloody sword.) A: What will become of the one who helped him? AM: That remains to be seen. Some do ill out of ignorance or fear. These men can be saved. Others suffer from corrupted wills... there minds poisoned and twisted. These men must be destroyed. Soon enough we will shall see what sort Jamal is. A: I've passed your test, then. What now? AM: Oh my child, we've only just begun. I hold here a list. Nine names adorn it. Nine men who need to die. They are plague-bringers, war-makers. Their power and influence corrupts the land and ensure the Crusades continue. You will find them. Kill them. In doing so, you sow the seeds of peace. Both for the region, and for yourself. In this way you might be redeemed. A: Nine lives in exchange for mine. AM: A most generous offer, I think. Have you any questions? A: Only where I need begin. AM: Very well. Ride for Damascus. Seek out the black market merchant named Tamir. Let him be the first to fall.(He goes and takes a pigeon from its cage.) Be sure to visit the city's Assassin Bureau when you arrive. I'll dispatch a bird to inform the rafiq of your arrival. Speak with him, you'll find he has much to offer. (He lets the bird loose out the window) A: If you think it best. AM: I do. Besides, you cannot begin your mission without his consent. A: What nonsense is this?! I don't need his permission! It's a waste of time! AM: It's the price you've paid for the mistakes you've made! You'll answer not only to me, but all the Brotherhood as well now. A: So be it! AM: Take your equipment and go. Prove you are not yet lost to us. Rq: Remember, Altaïr, if you find yourself in trouble, and the city turned against you, return to the Bureau. I can shelter you from the storm. Be warned though- if your enemies are too close, the door will remain closed, until you've lost them. Do you understand? A: Yes. To bring the enemy inside would compromise the Brotherhood. It was But there was no relief in sight. Tamir drove a caravan in those days, between Damascus and Jerusalem. But recent business had been poor. It seemed there were none in Jerusalem who wanted what he had- fruits and vegetables from nearby farms. And so Tamir left, riding north and wondering what would become of his supplies... for soon, they would surely spoil. That should have been the end of this tale... and the poor man's life. But, fate intended otherwise. Thus Tamir drove his caravan north... he came across the Saracen leader and his starving men. Most fortunate for them both, each having something the other wanted! So Tamir gave the man his food, and when the battle was finished, the Saracen leader saw to it that the merchant was repaid a thousand times! Some say, were it not for Tamir, Salah al-Din's men would have surely turned on him! Could be we won the battle because of that man! (Altaïr goes and beats him down mercilessly.) Altaïr: You seem to know quite a bit about Tamir. Tell me what's he planning. Dt: I know only the stories I tell... nothing more! A: A pity. There's no reason to let you live if you've nothing to offer in return. Dt: Wait, wait! There is one thing! A: Continue. Dt: He is preoccupied as of late. He oversees the production of many many weapons. A: What of it? They're meant for Salah al-Din. This does not help me. Which means it does not help you.... Dt: No, stop! Listen! Not Salah al-Din! It's for someone else! Crests his arms bear... they are different! Unfamilar! It seems Tamir supports another. But I know not who. A: Is that all? Dt: Yes, yes! I've told you everything I know. A: Then it's time for you to rest. (He kills the man.) --------------- Memory: Tamir has little faith in the men who work for him. He oversees their work himself. I will turn this to my advantage. D: So... you'd like telling me who put the stick up his ass? Lucy: We have a deadline. One week. Well, six days now. D: Deadline? L: I can't talk about it. D: Man, put yourself in my shoes? I'm being held hostage by a group of scientists, at least I think you're scientists, and forced to stay all day in some crazy-ass machine. You won't tell me what you're looking for or why you want it, but I'm supposed to be thanking you for keeping me alive. This is SO fucked!! (Lucy just looks at him.) Sorry, but it is! L: What do you want me to do? D: Hm, let's see, I dunno, maybe give me some answers? L: I can't. And it's better this way... safer. D: Safer for who?! L: Both of us. (If Desmond keeps up the conversation:) D: Hey, you know what, I think I have a question you can actually answer. L: What's up? D: Why is it that sometimes the guys in there, talk like they're from the future? L: The future? D: Y-I mean the present. Now, today, whatever. L: You've probably noticed English has become the official language of the Holy Land. D: Yeah, I was gonna say.... L: The Animus is translating speech it deems vital into more modern English, so expect a few anachronisms. I could probably make it more authentic, but... you ever read Chaucer? D: Who? L: ...yeah. Definitely not for you. (More interaction:) D: Can you tell me more about Abstergo? What goes on here? Beyond the whole keeping me prisoner thing. L: Abstergo is one of the largest pharmaceutical companies in the world. Their primary focus is anti-depressants. There's some information on the computer over there. D: But you already said this isn't about testing a drug. So what's the deal? L: I don't like where this is going. D: So it's safe to assume the Animus is not a part of their public face. L: What, you haven't seen the commercials? D: Oh my god... she has a sense of humor. L: I'm sorry, Desmond, I have a lot of work to do. Like I said, if you wanna know more about the company, take a look at the computer. The telecommunications stuff is particularly interesting. D: Never cared much for that stuff. V: Then, let me sum it up for you. The world's a mess. It's pathetic, really. You've seen it firsthand yourself- a thousand years between you and your ancestor, and society remains just as barbaric. Just as stupid. D: And your point is...? V: Order, Mr. Miles. The world needs order. That is what we're working towards, and that's what you're helping us to achieve. D: (laughing) You expect me to believe you're building a better tomorrow? V: That's exactly what we're doing! The human race calls out for direction! They want to know why they're here, what they're meant to do, well, we're going to tell them. And once they understand how to live their lives, everything will be better. D: Better how? V: An end to all conflicts, large and small. Isn't that what you Assassins strive for? Peace, in all things? D: I told you, I'm not an Assassin. V: Right, right. D: I still don't see where I fit into things. V: In time, Mr. Miles. In time you'll understand. Or you won't. I don't care either way, as long as you show us where it is. D: Where what is? (Lucy has entered.) Lucy: Sorry I'm late. Ready to go? V: Yes. We are. (Desmond goes and lies on the Animus.) Altaïr: Tamir spoke as if he knew you well. He implied my work had a larger meaning. AM: Significance comes not from a single act, but the context in which it is performed. The consequences borne of it. A: Then there is more I need to know. AM: Altaïr, your greatest failure was knowing too much. If I choose to withhold information, it is only to ensure you do not make the same mistake a second time. A: I see. AM: No you don't! And it will remain this way until you have learned your lesson! Still you have performed competently, and as such I restore a rank, and will return a piece of your equipment. Go now... either to Acre or Jerusalem. (He releases two pigeons.) There are men in both cities who require your attention. The Bureau leaders can tell you more of what needs to be done. (Altaïr gets his Short Blade and Counter-Attack ability back. [__[31S3]_] Memory Strand 3 Pickpocket - two thieves --------------- Memory: Garnier's letter is quite strange. He references an arms dealer in Damascus - most likely Tamir - and a second man in Jerusalem. What secret thing unites these men? Men who should hate one another.... Attachment: "Master- Progress is slow. We should endeavor to reclaim what's been taken from us, or I fear we'll be discovered before we have a chance to act. My work on substitutes shows some promise as certain local flora can be used to induce a similar state. Be warned, however: the effects are only temporary and subjects tend to develop a resistance, requiring increased dosage. Unfortunately, they can only take so much before exhaustion claims them. I've lost far too many in this manner and it breaks my heart. Your man in Jerusalem whould be commended for his diligence. My supplies remain sufficient, and I am no longer forced to use locals, helping to defray suspicion. I do worry about our loss in Damascus, though I have sufficient arms and armor to continue for a while longer. He will need to be replaced within the month, however, or our soldiers will be forced to wield table knives. Which brings me to my next concern... What do you intend to do about our enemy? I fear that the losses we've suffered are but the start. I feel secure enough within the hospital's walls, but it would be best if we dealt with this trouble before it has a chance to bloom. My men are yours for the task if it's required. Merely make your desires known to me. Your brother in peace, -G." [__[31S4]_] Memory Strand 4 Pickpocket - two men 1: I need this dealt with now! The ropes are eaten through with rot, and must be replaced! If we wait any longer, we risk an accident! 2: I understand. It's the knights that sacrifice so the rest of us may live in peace! 2: But they've nowhere to go! And the rains will come soon... 1: I won't warn you again, boy! Do as you're told or you'll find yourself in irons. 2: Yes, sire. 1: First sensible words out of your mouth! You've got the plans, now get to work! --------------- Memory: The Hospitaliers are replacing all the candelabras within the Fortress. I could use these to navigate the rafters. Rq: Share your knowledge with me, then. A: He lives and works inside the Order's hospital, northwest of here. Rumors speak of atrocities committed in its walls. It seems the good doctor enjoys experimenting on citizens- most of them kidnapped and brought here from Jerusalem. Rq: * from stealing his subjects from another city, he avoids arousing too much suspicion here. But back to the matter at hand. What is your plan? A: Garnier keeps mainly to his quarters inside the Hospital. He leaves occassionally to inspect his patients. It's when he makes his rounds that I'll strike. Rq: It's clear you've given thsi some thought. I give you leave to go. (He puts the marker feather on the desk and Altaïr takes it.) Remove this stain from Acre, Altaïr. Perhaps it will help to cleanse your own. Help me, please! You must help me! (The man is caught by some guards and they struggle at the gate. It opens and Garnier comes out.) Garnier: Enough, my child! I asked you to retrieve the patient, not kill him! There, there. Everything will be alright. M: No! GN: Give me your hand. M: No, don't touch me! Not again! GN: Cast out this fear, else I can't help you. M: Help me, like you helped the others? You took their souls! I saw! I saw! But not mine! No! You'll not have mine! GN: (backhands the man) Take hold of yourself! Do you think this gives me pleasure? Do you think I want to hurt you? But you leave me no choice. M: Every kind word- matched with the back of his hand! All lies and deception! (he is struggling with the guards) He won't be content until all bow before him! GN: You should not have done that. Return him to his quarters! I'll be along once I've tended to the others. M: You can't keep me here, I'll escape again! GN: No. You won't. Break his legs... both of them. (the guards do so) I am so sorry, my child. (guards drag the crying man inside) Have you people nothing better to do? (The crowd disperses. Altaïr goes inside the building and kill Garnier, either by fighting him and his men, or sneaking up on him slowly and/or using some Scholars. He and Garnier appear in the memory place.) Altaïr: Let go your burden. Garnier: Ah... I rest now, yes. The endless dream calls to me. Before I close my eyes, I must know: what will become of my children? A: You mean the people made to suffer your cruel experiments? They'll be free now to return to their homes. GN: Homes? What homes? The sewer? The * the prisons we * them from? A: You took them against their will. GN: Yes, what little will there was for them to have. * So naïve. * child simply because he wails? "I want to play with fire, Father." What would you say? "As you wish." Ah... then you'd answer.... A: These are not children, but men and women full grown. GN: In body, indeed perhaps, but not in mind. Which is the very damage I sought to repair. * without the Piece of Eden, which you stole from us, my progress was slowed. But *, mixtures and extracts. My guards are proof of this. They were madmen before I found and freed them from the prisons of their own minds. And with my death, madmen will they be again. A: You truly believe you are helping them? GN: It's not what I believe... it's what I know. (Altaïr dips the feather in the blood. He kills or escapes the large number of guards in the hospital, then returns to the Bureau.) Rafiq: What news, Altaïr? A: ...Garnier is dead. Rq: Then you return to Masyaf with news of your victory. A: There is something else. Rq: Speak it then! Or would you have me read your mind? A: What do you think he wanted from these people, that he would keep them and experiment on them as he did? Rq: Yours is not to ask, but to ACT, Altaïr! It doesn't matter what he did or why. Only that he's dead. A: But Garnier seems to believe he was helping these people! Rq: Is that what you saw? A: No. What I saw was not a place of healing, but of pain. Rq: Then why are we having this conversation? A: I-I don't know. Forget I spoke of it. Rq: I already have. Animus: Fast-forwarding memory to a more recent one. --------------- Memory: Is it possible? Was Garnier helping those inside his hospital? He spoke of curing them from their madness using herbs and extracts. Some of them were even grateful for the work he had done. He was a madman and a butcher. How is it these men found good inside a man who was clearly intent on evil? What is it that I've failed to see? I should report this to Al Mualim. [_[B3P2]__] Talal - Jerusalem Al Mualim: Have you news for me, Altaïr? Altaïr: Garnier de Naplouse is dead. AM: Excellent! We could not have hoped for a more agreeable outcome. A: And yet... AM: What is it? A: The Doctor insisted his work was noble. Looking back, those who were supposedly *his captives* seemed grateful to the man. Not all of them, but enough to make me wonder. How did he manage to turn enemy into friend? AM: Leaders will always find ways to make others obey them. And that is what makes them leaders. When words fail they turn to coin. When that won't do, they turn to baser things- bribes, threats, and others types of trickery. There are plants, Altaïr, herbs from distant lands, that can cause a man to take leave of his senses. So great are the pleasures it brings, men may even become enslaved by it. A: You think they were drugged, then? Poisoned? AM: Yes, it it truly was as you describe it. A: Herbs. This seems a strange method of control. AM: Our enemies have accused me of the same. A: The promise of Paradise.... AM: They think there's a garden, overflowing with women and pleasure. *They think I drug you with rewards* tempt you *. A: They do not know the truth of it. AM: Which is how it must be. A: But if they knew the truth of it- that all we seek is peace! AM: Then they would not fear us, and we would have no hold over them. Go, it is time you continued with your work. Another rank is restored to you, as is a piece of your equipment. We'll speak again when the next has fallen. (Altaïr gets back his throwing knives and Tackle ability. He goes and rides to Jerusalem and makes his way to the local Bureau. The rafiq is Malik.) Altaïr: Safety and peace, Malik. Malik: Your presence here deprives me of both. What do you want? A: Al Mualim has asked- Mk: Asked that you perform some menial task in a matter of to redeem yourself. So be out with it. A: Tell me what you can about the one they call Talal. Mk: It is your duty to locate and assassinate the man, Altaïr. Not mine. A: You do well to assist me, his death benefits *. Mk: Do you deny his death benefits you as well? A: Such things do not concern me. Mk: Your actions very much concern me! A: Then do not help me. I'll find him myself! Mk: (sighs) Wait, wait. It won't do having you stump around the city like a blind man. Better you know where to begin your search. A: I'm listening. Mk: I can think of three places. South of here in the markets that line the border between the Jewish and Muslim Districts; to the north near the mosque of this district; and east, in front of St. Anne's Church - close to the Bab Ariha gate. It won't save you when you're discovered! Won't shield you from their swords and arrows! 1: If all goes well it won't come to that. Anyway, it's a risk I'll have to take. Wish me luck, my friend. Nothing of the sort. 1: Then what? 2: It would be bad business on my part, seeing's how I already work for him. 1: You?! 2: So, now do you understand? Go. I must get back to my mentor before he returns from the market, so be fast as the wind. (Altaïr gathers them all up.) Great. I knew I could count on you, Master Altaïr. Here is what I learned listening to the guards near the Dome of the Rock. They were talking about the man named Talal. His base is a warehouse located inside the Barbican north of here. As we speak he prepares a caravan for travel. I'll strike while he's inspecting his stock. If I can avoid his men, Talal himself should prove little challenge. Mk: Little challenge?! Listen to you! Such arrogance. A: Are we finished? Are you satisfied with what I've learned? Mk: No, but it will have to do. (He places the feather on the desk.) Rest, prepare, cry in the corner... do whatever it is you do before a mission. But make sure you do it quietly. --------------- Memory: Talal, a cunning slave master, has a warehouse in the northern Barbican filled with human livestock. Altaïr: What now, slaver? Tl: Do not call me that! I only wish to help them. As I myself was helped. A: You do no kindness imprisoning them like this. Tl: Imprisoning them? I keep them safe. Preparing them for the journey that lies ahead. A: What journey? It is a life of servitude. Tl: (laughs) You know nothing! It was folly to even bring you here! To think that you might see and understand! A: I understand well enough. Show yourself! Tl: Ah, so you want to see the man that called you here. A: You did not call me here! I came on my own. Tl: (laughs) Did you? Who unbarred the door, cleared the path? Did you once lift your sword against a single one of mine, huh? No. All this, I did for you. Step into the light then, and I'll grant you one final favor. (Altaïr does so.) What this *. (He finally emerges from the shadows.) Now I stand before you. What is it you desire? A: Come down here! Let us settle this with honor! Tl: Why must it always come to violence? It seems I cannot help you, for you do not wish to help yourself, and I cannot allow my work to be threatened. You leave me no choice. You must die. (Altaïr fights through ten of Talal's men and climbs up to his balcony.) Tl: Keep him away from me! (Talal climbs up and out onto the roof. Altaïr follows and eventually chases him down, stabbing him with the Hidden Blade. They appear in the memory corridor.) Altaïr: You've nowhere to run now. Share your secrets with me. Altaïr: The deed is done. Talal is dead. Mk: Oh, I know, I know. In fact, the entire city knows!! Have you forgotten the meaning of subtlety?! A: A skilled Assassin ensures his work is noticed by the many. Mk: No, a skilled Assassin maintains control of his environment! A: We can argue the details all you want, Malik, but the fact remains I've accomplished the task set to me by Al Mualim. Mk: ...go then. Return to the old man. Let us see with whom he sides. A: You and I are on the same side, Malik. (The memory block comes to an end.) --------------- Memory: Talal also spoke of a Brotherhood and their designs upon the Holy Land. Lucy: I'm getting weird temperature readings. I think the Animus is overheating. V: Christ, it's always something! How long? L: Too soon to tell. (Desmond's visor starts to go back.) V: These delays are unacceptable, Ms. Stillman, I want progress reports every hour! (He begins walking off. Desmond sits up.) L: It's gonna be a while, Desmond. Why don't you go lie down or something? Get some rest. (She kneels down by the machine.) Desmond: Why is he always yelling at you? It's his machine. L: His theories- he's not the one who built it. D: Who did? You? L: Heh. No. Abstergo has a team of engineers - not much they don't have - but I did oversee the assembly. I guess that's why he gets so angry with me. D: He's a dick. L: He's under a lot of pressure. We all are... D: Can't believe you're defending the guy. L: Warren saved my life. So it he wants to yell a little... let him. (She goes back to the monitor, Desmond keeps bothering her.) D: Whaddya mean he saved your life? L: (she goes and stands behind the chair.) You're not the only once who doesn't get to go home at night. D: Wait, you're saying YOU'RE a prisoner? L: When they first approached me I was finishing up my PhD. The university had made it clear I had no future there. (she sits) They didn't like the subject of my doctorate... called it "pseudo-science." Said keeping me on would discredit and embarrass them. It was the same everywhere. Other universities, companies I interviewed with. Pretty soon I was out of money and out of time. I was this close to waiting tables. (holds up fingers) Then I got a letter... D: From Vidic? L: He'd said he'd been following my career since undergrad. That he believed in my work and wanted to meet to discuss my future. (stands) You have no idea how good it felt to hear that. So I met with him. What did I have to lose? D: And he offered you a job. L: Yes. Here at Abstergo. Helping out on the Animus project. I'd have a chance to test my theories and prove the professors wrong. How could I turn that down? D: Think I'm missing the part where you became a prisoner. L: Sometimes I wonder... (sits) if they weren't behind it all. If they manipulated events, so I'd get desperate. They can do that. They can do anything. I didn't think when I agreed to come here. They even told me I'd be trapped. For six months... a year max. Once the project launched, there'd be no need for secrecy anymore. But until then, I'd be a "guest" of the company. At least... that's what they said. D: And when the Animus was ready? L: They came in while I was sleeping. (stands) Three guys. Guns. (She walks to the window.) They dragged me out of bed. God. The worst part was I knew them! One guy, Richard, we ate lunch together sometimes! And now he was gonna-! They were cracking jokes. I tried to pull away... he hit me. And that's when he told me I was going to die. D: Christ. What did you do? L: Nothing. I kept telling myself it wasn't real. And then Warren was there. Shouting at them to get away from me. And they listened. D: Jesus. L: He's not a happy man, Desmond. I wouldn't even say he's a good man, but he saved my life. They never came for me again. And he promised they never would. D: You're still stuck here working for these nutjobs. L: But I'm alive. Anyway, I really do need to get the Animus repaired. (She walks back to the Animus.) I'll see you tomorrow, Desmond. D: (He walks into his room- the wardrobe's been opened.) What the hell? Someone's been in here! (He looks in it and pulls out something.) Looks like some kind of access code. (He uses the code on his door and it opens. The Animus is blue again and Lucy's gone! He goes to the terminal and takes Lucy's "digi-pen" lying next to it. He probably snoops around in her e-mails for a while [see the e-mails section], and then goes back to bed.) [[AD4M]___] Abstergo Laboratory - Day 4 Morning (The bedroom door opens and Vidic strolls in.) Vidic: Rise and shine! We've got quite a day ahead of us! Desmond: You're in a good mood this morning. (he sits up) V: Ms. Stillman has made some modifications to the Animus. You should be able to remain inside even longer now. D: And help you with your treasure hunt. V: This is serious business, Mr. Miles. I don't think you fully appreciate the work Abstergo does. D: Maybe it's because I don't actually know what you people do. V: We change the world. Every day, in a hundred different ways. Did you know that every single breakthrough of the last millenia, be it medical, mechanical, or philosophical, has come from Abstergo- or its predecessors? D: That's a bold claim, Doc. Think you might be exaggerating a bit? V: Not in the slightest! Oh, we certainly don't take the credit. That would arouse far too much suspicion. We choose our beneficiaries with great care. D: Why? V: Isn't it obvious? It means we're in control. D: But how? What makes you guys so special- so smart? That you happen to invent all these things while we mere mortals stumble around like idiots? V: To be fair, we don't invent them, we find them D: Find them? V: They're gifts, Mr. Miles. From those who came before. We'll have to continue this discussion later. Time's wasting. (He walks out and Desmond follows.) Lucy: Good morning, Desmond. D: Yeah, hi. Three of the nine lay dead. For this you have my thanks. But do not think to rest upon your laurels. Your work has just begun. Altaïr: I'm yours to command, Master. AM: King Richard, emboldened by his victory at Acre, prepares to move south toward Jerusalem. Salah al-Din is surely aware of this. So he gathers his men before the broken citadel of Arsuf. A: Would you have me kill them both then? End their war before it begins in earnest. AM: No. To do so would scatter their forces, and subject their realm to the bloodlust of ten thousand aimless warriors. It will be many days before they meet, and while they march, they do not fight. You must concern yourself with more immediate threats- the men who pretend to govern in their absence. A: Give me names and I'll give you blood. AM: So I will. Abu'l Nuquod, the wealthiest man in Damas; Majd Addin, regent of Jersusalem; William of Montferrat, liegelord of Acre. A: What are their crimes? AM: Greed, arrogance, the slaughter of innocents. Walk amongst the people of their cities. You'll learn the secrets of their sins. Do no doubt that these men are obstacles to the peace we seek. A: Then they will die. AM: Another of your items is restored. Take it. See that it is put to good use. Return to me as each man falls, that we may better understand their intentions. (He releases three birds.) And Altaïr, take care. Your recent work has likely attracted the attention of the city guard. (Altaïr receives the Assassin's Gloves- the Grab Break and Catch Ledge abilities. Richest man in the city. Quite exciting, quite dangerous! I envy you, Altaïr. Well, not where you were beaten and stripped of your rank. But I envy everything else! Oh, except for the terrible things the other Assassins say about you! But yes, aside from the failure and the hatred, yes. Aside from those things I envy you very much! A: I do not care what the others think or say. I'm here to do a job. So I ask again- what can you tell me of the merchant king? Rq: Only that he must be a very bad man if Al Mualim has sent you to see him. He keeps to his own kind, wrapped in the finery of the city's Noble District. He's a busy man- always up to something. I'm sure is you spent some time amongst his type, you'd learn all you need to know about him. A: Then where would you have me begin my search? Rq: If I were you, I'd start with the Omayyad Mosque and Sarouja Souk- both of which are west of here. Further to the northwest is Salah al-Din's Citadel. It's a popular meeting spot and has proved a reliable source of loose tongues in the past. Yes, these three places should serve your needs. A: My thanks for your guidance, Rafiq. It also does not account for deliveries to Jerusalem. But if the money was not meant for ransom, what is its purpose? You should also know that there have been extravagant parties as of late. All held within The Merchant King's Palace. This is absurd! The citizens of Damas starve themselves to help Salah al-Din's war efforst, but instead, their money is being spent on feasts! they deeply despise the Merchant King, and are powerless to stop him. Which is why I write to you now. Please, say nothing to the Merchant King for now. Should be become suspicious, he'll attempt to hide his misdeeds. I'll contact you when I've learned more. With Peace, Marzuq" [__[41S4]_] Memory Strand 4 Stealth Assassinations - Informer --------------- Memory: A map of where the Merchant King's stationed his Guards. This will definitely prove useful. Attachment: (said map) [__[41S5]_] Memory Strand 5 Eavesdropping - a man and woman Man: There's a problem! I need your advice. Woman: What is it? M: This morning... I went to hang the lanterns for the party. W: And this troubles you why? M: I... I forgot to remove the scaffold. W: Forgot it where? M: Just outside the merchant king's quarters- above the balcony. W-What if it falls? Someone could be hurt! W: Too late to do anything about it now... just hope it isn't noticed! You can deal with it tomorrow. --------------- Memory: Some servants spoke of leaving behind a scaffold just outside the Merchant King's quarters. I could use the passage they took to bring a scaffold up there. It will bring me closer to my target. Attachment: (map of route up to Abu'l) [__[41S6]_] Memory Strand 6 Flag gathering - Informer Informer: Safety and peace. You want information about the city, I suppose? Right now I don't have time, I must find some flags which have been stolen from our cache in the Rich District of Damas. But with this heat... my legs cannot carry me anymore. Would you be kind enough to help me? Return the flags and I'll help you as best I can. (After getting them all:) Thank you. The rafiq will be happy to see these flags returned. Perhaps this morsel of information will help you. I was invited by Abu'l to one of his lavish parties. I noticed the fountain in the middle of the merchant king's palace could be easily climbed. Use this information wisely. Now, if you will excuse me, I must go. --------------- Memory: There seems to be a fountain in the middle of the Merchant King's Palace which I could climb should the need ever arise. Attachment: (map of fountain position and possible way to balcony) [__[41S7]_] Memory Strand 7 Knowledge - Damascus Rafiq Rafiq: Peace be upon you, Altaïr. How may I serve you? Altaïr: I've done as asked and learned all I need to know about my prey. Rq: Then you must share your knowledge with me. A: Abu'l Nuquod is corrupt to the core and despised by his own citizens as a result. It appears he's been stealing money meant for the people of Damas and spending it on himself. Even as we speak he flaunts his greed preparing for a lavish party. His guards and servants should have their hands full dealing with the guests. They won't even know I'm there. Rq: Most impressive, my friend. The others said you'd make a mess of things, but not I. No. I was sure you'd come through. And come through you have. The Bureau's yours to do with as you please until you're ready to begin. (He gives up the feather.) Animus: Fast-forwarding memory to a more recent one. --------------- Memory: Abu'l Nuquod, a corrupt man of tremendous wealth, is planning another feast today. At some stage, he will speak to his guests, no doubt made drunk and stupid by his gluttony. This will be my moment.... [__[41S8]_] Memory Strand 8 Assassination - Abu'l Nuquod (Altaïr sneaks into the palace in some way or another. Abu'l comes out on the balcony and addresses the crowd.) Abu'l: Welcome, welcome! Thank you all for joining me this evening. Please, eat, drink, enjoy all the pleasures I have to offer. Take your time, I will wait. (People are shown joyfully drinking wine from the fountain.) I trust everything is to your... satisfaction? (The crowd cheers.) Good, good. It pleases me to see you all so happy. For these are dark days, my friends, and we must enjoy this bounty while we still can. War threatens to consume us all- Salah al-Din bravely fights for what he believes in, and you are always there to support him without question. It is your generosity to him that allows this campaign to continue. So I propose a toast then! To you my dear friends. You, that have brought us to where we are today. May you be given everything you deserve. (more yelling) Such kindness! I didn't think it in you! you, who have been so quick to judge me! And so cruel. Oh, do not feign ignorance! Do you take me for a fool? * I have not heard the words whispered behind my back. Well, I have, and I fear I can never forget. But this is not why I called you here tonight, no. I wish to speak more of this war, and your part in it. You give up your coin, quick as can be, knowing all too well it buys the deaths of thousands. You don't know why we fight. "Sanctity of the Holy Land" you'll say. Oh the evil * nation of our enemies. But these are lies you tell yourselves! (laughs) No. All this suffering is borne of * and hate! It bothers you that they are different, just as it bothers you that I am different! (Takes a large gulp of wine.) Compassion, mercy, tolerance. These words mean nothing to any of you! Mean nothing to those infidel invaders, who ravish our land in search of gold and glory! And so, I say ENOUGH! I've pledged myself to another cause. One that will bring about a new world! In which all people might live, side by side, in peace. A pity none of you will live to see it. (A man begins to cough and clutch his throat.) Kill anyone who tries to escape! (Mass hysteria! Altaïr moves through the crowd, climbing up to Abu'l's level in some way. He either finishes him there, or more likely, chases him through the city before finally ending it.) Altaïr: Be at peace now, you can no longer do harm. Abu'l: Why have you done this? A: You stole money from those you claim to lead. Sent it away for some unknown purpose. I want to know where it's gone and why. Ab: Look at me! My very nature is an affront to the people I ruled. And these royal robes did little to muffle their shouts of hate. A: So this is about vengeance then. Ab: No, not vengeance. My conscience. How could I finance a way in service to the same god that calls me an abomination. A: If you do not serve Salah al-Din's cause then whose? Ab: In time * you'll come to know them. I think perhaps you already do. A: Then why hide? And why these dark deeds? Ab: Is it so different than your own work? You take the lives of men and women strong in the conviction that their deaths will improve the ones of those left behind. * evil, for a greater good? We are the same. A: No, we are nothing alike. Ab: Ah, but I see it in your eyes- you doubt. You cannot stop us. We will have our new world. (Altaïr uses the feather, evades/kills the guards, and returns to the Bureau.) Rafiq: Word has reached me of your success, Altaïr. Altaïr: Abu'l Nuquod's reign of terror has come to an end. Rq: I'm glad to hear it. A: He killed them- the men and women at his party. It was poison, a coward's tool. Blamed them for the war. Said he wished to end it. Rq: Strange. But then again the merchant king was said to be a bit... different. Perhaps this was simply a symptom of his madness. A: Perhaps. Rq: You sound unconvinced. Speak with Al Mualim then, he might offer a better explanation. A: Yes, we'll see what he has to say. Animus: Fast-forwarding memory to a more recent one. --------------- Memory: These men I'm sent to kill are wicked. They profit from the war. And so I am sent to stop them, and ensure that peace returns. But then why do the Merchant King's words dig so deeply? Is it wrong for me to see a bit of truth in them? I should return to Al Mualim, that he may help me make sense of this and crush these seeds of doubt.
