Chocobo Racing can be done in the world Serendipity. You can unlock Serendipity from a gate in Yaschas Massif 01X AF. Version 0.5 - 2/9/2012 - Cleaned up Race Ability list - Added a few passive abilities Version 0.7 - 2/11/2012 - Added where to get each chocobo - Added best builds (which can be expanded on) - Added race lists/prizes - Added race titles Version 1.0 - 2/12/2012 - Had someone proofread & make sure most information is correct & understandable - Uploaded to GameFAQs Version 2.0 - 2/22/2012 - Edited information about Health Nut in regards to Underdog - Added information about winning titles - Added monsters in ability list - Added list of monsters with multiple racing abilities O============================================================================O | Chocobo Locations [B000] | O============================================================================O To race a chocobo, first you must capture one. Chocobo's are the only monsters where you can capture more than 1 of them at a time. This means that you can have 3 or 4 (or more!) chocobos with you at a time. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Yellow Chocobo [B001] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Yellows are by far the easiest to catch. You can catch them in the plains of the Archylte Steppe when it's Sunny. However, Yellows are not worth catching to race as you'd have to level them up very high to give them any sort of chance. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Red Chocobo [B002] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Reds are harder to catch as they seem to be rarer in appearance. You can catch them in the Archylte Steppe as well when it's Sunny. They appear in the desert area west of the plains. Reds are decent Commandos when you level them up, but not a popular choice for racing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Blue Chocobo [B003] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Blues are located in the Archylte Steppe as well. They spawn in the Marshes when it's sunny/rainy. Blues are decent Ravagers when you level them up, but again not a popular choice for racing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Green Chocobo [B004] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Greens are located in Yaschas Massif 100/110AF. Greens are good Medics when you level them up, but again not a popular choice for racing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Purple Chocobo [B005] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Purples are located in the Bresha Ruins 300AF. Purples are good Synergists when you level them up, but again not a popluar choice for racing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Black Chocobo [B006] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Blacks are located in the Vile Peaks 010AF. Blacks are good Sabatuers when you level them up, but again not a popular choice for racing. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ White Chocobo [B007] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Whites are located in Oerbra 300AF. Usually spawns near the big tree. Good choice if you don't want to use the Silver and/or Gold. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Silver & Gold Chocobos [B008] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Silver and Gold chocobos are a one time deal. They are the only chocobos you can get ONLY once. To get the Silver, head to Academia 4XXAF and go to the Acadamy (where Hope is). Head around to the left side and stand right in front of the green sphere. Throw mog in to it (it may take a couple tries) and you should get the Silver. To get the Gold, head to A Dying World 700AF. The Gold is found in a chest located in the northern area, east of the bridge. Silver is a Sentenal, while Gold is a Commando. Silver and Gold are the best chocobos to race with, mostly because they only have 45 levels and thus level up a lot fast. Silver is slightly better than Gold because it's max STR/MAG is ~800/800, while Gold is only ~800/600 (numbers are approximates). O============================================================================O | Racing Basics [C000] | O============================================================================O Chocobo Racing can be done in the world Serendipity. You can unlock Serendipity from the gate in Yaschas Massif 01X AF. As you upgrade your chocobo, you want to keep it's Strength and Magic in mind. For racing: Strength = Speed Magic = Stamina Rank E: Less than 150 STR/MAG Rank D: Between 200 - ? STR/MAG Rank C: Between ? - ? STR/MAG Rank B: Between ? - 699 STR/MAG Rank A: More than 700 STR/MAG For the best results, you want your racing chocobo to have at least 800 STR & MAG. To accomplish this it is best to use only Potent Materials to upgrade your chocobo. Chocobos will have careers. Each race costs RP to race. Your chocobo will start with only a certain amount of RP, thus will only be able to race a certain number of races before you must retire them. The maximum number of races you can race before you have no RP left is called a career. Don't worry! When you run out of RP, simply retire your chocobo and then register him again to start another career! You won't lose it forever once he's done with his first career. O============================================================================O | Best Builds [D000] | O============================================================================O ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Silver & Gold [D00X] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ The Silver Chocobo is the best chocobo to use for racing. The Gold comes in a close second. So, if you'd rather use the Silver as your SEN monster, feel free, or vise versa. To max either the Silver or Gold you will need: 36 Potent Orbs (Buccaboo/Buccaboo Ace - Archylte Steppe) 42 Potent Essences (Hedge Frog/Mud Frog/Swampmonk/Caterchipillar - Archylte Steppe, Rainy/Marches) 24 Potent Crystals (Microchu - Archylte Steppe, Rainy/Marshes) This will give you a level 45 Silver or Gold. The Silver will have an A in speed and stamina, while the Gold will have an A in speed and B in stamina. To get A stamina with your Gold, simply find the passive ability Magic +20% and infuse it to your Gold. That will give you 800 magic and rank A. Now that you have an leveled chocobo it's time to put some awesome racing abilities [D000] on it. Silver starts with Blue Streak, while Gold starts with the Marathoner. Marathoner is easy to get, while you have to get Blue Streak from a Tonberry (if you're not using the Silver). Here are a few musts: - Sprinter - Marathoner - Perserverence (Not needed if you're using the Blue Streak strategy) And here a few that will help you: - Limelight (If you plan on doing any of the Graded/Secret races, if you just want to farm Collectors Catalouges then it's not needed) - Dark Horse (If you plan on betting on yourself) - Health Nut (If you don't want to bother with Chocoboost/Bulls) - Attention Hog (Good w/ Health Nut) I have previously stated in this guide that Health Nut is not needed to win races and best to leave off if you want to win the Underdog title. You definitely don't need it to win, however once you've leveled your chocobo and added all the abilities you want you'll never be unfavoured enough to win that title. So, if you're having troubling winning or you dislike spending your coins on chocoboots or chocobulls go ahead and add it. Microchu is one of the best monsters to infuse, simply because it has four racing abilities when you level it up. Microchu: Level 5 - Marathoner (Critical: Vigilance) Level 18 - Dark Horse (Item Scavenger II) Level 24 - Health Nut (Rapid Recovery) Level 35 - Free Spirit (Auto-Vigilance) If you don't want an ability, as don't think you need it or already have it, simply don't level the Microchu up and you won't get it. The next monster to level and infuse is the Reaver, caught in the Archylte Steppe (Sunny/Plains-near Long Gui). Reaver: Default - Preserveraence (Attack: ATB Charge) Level 14 - Sprinter (Critical: Bravery) I recommend the Reaver for Sprinter, simply because you fight him more often than you do a Cactuar, but if you want you can infuse a Cactuar for Sprinter instead. ------------------------------------------- Strategies ------------------------------------------- If you are racing with your Silver then you will start with the Strategy Blue Streak. To make the most with this strategy, it is a good idea to infuse: Pulse Gladiator: Default - Second Wind (Improved Counter) This will increase Blue Streak's effect. Blue Streak is a bit scary, because your chocobo likes to stay in last place, and so you must sprint when Blue Streak activates to pull ahead. Sometimes, you must continue to sprint even after your boost gauge depletes or else you may lose, but this usually only happens when facing star ranked opponents. If for whatever reason, you keep losing with Blue Streak, simply switch to another strategy, even if you don't have a racing ability for it. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* If you are racing with your Gold then you will learn the strategy Lightning Bolt. To make the most of this strategy, it's a good idea to infuse a Nanochu/Chichu or Metalligantuar: Default - Runaway (Pack Mentality/Hindrance) HOWEVER - Nanochu and Chichu are one time monsters, so if you have your Gold infuse one of them you will lose it forever! When Lightning Bolt activates, wait until your boost guage fills completely then boost ahead of the pack. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Ultimately, it's up to you which strategy to use. O============================================================================O | Chocobo Race Abilities [E000] | O============================================================================O The abilities you get in the chocobo races come from the passive abilities you have on your chocobo of choice. Luckily, with the Bargain Hunter fragment skill they only cost 36 casino coins! The key to winning the titles that require you to race all of a certain class races in a single career is: To NOT advance higher than you need to. Each class unlocks 12 races to choose from. So if you unlock all the classes and then decide you want to race all Cocoon class races, you will have 60 races to shuffle through to find the 12 you need. That is a LOT of shuffles. So if you want to race all of the Cocoon races, start a new career. No matter which Cocoon race you race first, it will unlock the Monster class. HOWEVER, if you do NOT race any Monster class races, you will have a pool of only 24 races to shuffle through. I usually bought regular Shuffle items from the Casino lady in bulks of 30. Once I ran out, I'd go and buy more. Pressing Select on the main racing screen will cycle through your Chocobos racing stats & abilities, which races you've done, and the titles you've won for that career. Utilize this to remember which races you've done. Please note they only list 10 races at a time so you may want to also write down which races you've done to keep track. Before trying to get these titles, it is highly recommended you get a stockpile of coins, whether through racing or buying them is up to you. The best way to get them through racing is to race the Fal'Cie class race-- Dahaka Stakes--over and over. At the end of your career you should net roughly 6,000 coins -- not counting selling all the Collector Catalouges you've won! Do this a couple times (or once) and you should have more than enough. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ King of Cocoon, Monster Hunter & Weaponmeister Titles [G01X] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Keep track of your chocobos RP. To get all of these titles you will need 540RP total. Since your chocobo should have 600, if you don't rerace too many races you should be fine. This includes the graded and secret races. There really isn't a set way to do this. Race one of them and unlock the Monster class. Now, completely ignore all 15RP races you see. All the Cocoon races - 10RP races - will be on the bottom of the racing list. Now, simply use the Shuffle item to shuffle the races and do all of the Cocoon races. Hopefully, you'll get lucky and not use so many shuffles, but you may have to quit and buy more (you do NOT have to retire your chocobo to buy more). Once you have raced all Cocoon races and gotten the title, AND ONLY THEN, start racing the Monster class. You'll unlock the Weapon class, but ignore them. Weapon class races will be at the top of the list followed by Monster and finally Cocoon. Again, simply use the Shuffle items to and race all of the Monster Class. As you get more races to shuffle through, you'll find yourself going through more Shuffle items. This is unfortunate, but the only way to do it. Which is why you should have started with a stockpile of coins to buy Shuffles with. Rinse and repeat with the Weapon class. Remember not to race and Guardian class races. Total RP: 540 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Guardian Eliminator & Supreme Fal'Cie Chocobo Titles [G02X] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ You'll have to do seprate careers for these titles as you won't have enough RP to do both. The Fal'Cie will probably the easiest, since those races like to stay at the top of the list no matter how many times you shuffle. The Guardian you'll probably hate because of the above. Strategy is the same as the above, except you can do the Fal'Cie first since there are no classes after them. Buy a lot of Shuffles. Guardian Total RP: 300 Fal'Cie Total RP: 360 ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Derby Champ Title [G03X] ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Remember! The key to winning the titles that require you to race all of a certain races in a single career is: To NOT advance higher than you need to. Buy a bunch of shuffles. Here is the list of Derby races and which class they're in. Do both races before going up a class. I.e. Do both Cocoon class Derbys before doing the Monster class ones and upgrading to Weapon class and so on. Seriously. For this chocobo I used a White Chocobo, level 12. Why White? Mostly because it starts out with Rocket Blast as one of its locked abilities. And unfortunately, Sprinting Start is essential for gaining this title, so start practicing. Why level 12? Mostly because the higher the level the more likely you are to rank. As it is, at level 12 it is possible to get rank C and E on your first race! Why is it based on luck? Because I tested this doing 20-30 one race careers. For 5 in a row, I was unranked with the lowest odds (between 11.4-15.1). The next two times I started I was ranked C or E with 4-8 odds. I was doing the exact same race for each of these (Hanging Edge Classic). Also, I've done these several times and have only won a couple for each strategy. If you know a sure fire way to win, please let me know! I used Potent Materials, but it's possible to use Mana (although this is probably going to be a pure racing chocobo so it's not recommended) since the stats are similar. Potent: HP: 696 ATK: 78 MAG: 101 Mana: HP: 696 ATK: 69 MAG: 100 If you think it is possible for your level 45 Silver/Gold or level 99 White/Red to get this title. I laugh at you. But if you did get it, I'd like proof. No, the only way to get it is to start a new chocobo and cross your fingers. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Lightning Bolt Strategy [GB4X] *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Have not managed to win this yet. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Turbo Strategy [GC4X] *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Lvl 12 White Feral Surge [L] Feral Fatiuge [L] Feral Speed II Magic +10% 1. Infuse with Calautidon [Item Scavenger II] Your White should look like so: Feral Surge [L] - Rocket Blast Feral Fatiuge [L] Feral Speed II - Attention Hog Improved Counter - Second Wind Critical: Shield - Turbo Critical: Bravery - Sprinter (Attack: ATB Charge - Perserverance) Item Scavenger II - Dark Horse Magic +10% Register your chocobo and start a 600m race (preferably Hanging Edge Classic). Look to see what your odds are. If they are they highest make sure your strategy matches and you feed your chocobo 2 Chocoboosts to get him in the best condition then start the race. Make sure you get the Sprinting Start! As the 1 is fading hit X and go! When Turbo activates hold the boost button even after Turbo disappears. I have tested this and it does work. I managed to get the Title the first race I where I had the highest odds. I did this without Free Spirit, and Preserverance, which doesn't activate with the Turbo strategy. Have not managed to win again, but I am getting in second or third each time I try. *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Blue Streak Strategy [GD4X] *-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-*-* Please note that this build is inconsistant. Make sure you get the Sprinting Start! As the 1 is fading hit X and go! When Blue Streak activates hold the Boost Button and hopefully you'll get lucky and win. I'm honestly unsure why this is inconsistant. But for some reason it is. You do not need Perserverance. Mostly because it won't activate anyway. If you get it with the Reaver then don't worry. O============================================================================O | Money/Coin Making Tips [H000] | O============================================================================O The most known way to make money (and coins) is to race the Fal'Cie class, Dahaka Stakes race over and over and win a bunch of Collectors Catalouges. These sell for 11,000 which will give you ~1000 coins if you convert. Another way to get coins, if you don't think you can win against the star ranked, is to bet on your rival as well as yourself. This way, if you lose to him, you'll still win some coins. O============================================================================O | Credits/Thanks [I000] | O============================================================================O Thanks to my brothers, who helped me a bunch while checking out the racing abilities and other information. Thanks to aminthemachine on the GameFAQs boards for his build for the Silver Chocobo. Thanks to Dave for prize information! Thanks to JoloStuki on the GameFAQs boards for the White Chocobo Build. Thanks to trolls who give me lulz at the rants sent about how they 'ruined' their chocobo because they're stupid enough not to realize that 1) it was their decision to do everything 2) they suck if they *need* Health Nut to win and 3) didn't make a back-up save when messing with 1-time monsters.
