Version 2.00-expanded the "Master League" section,by adding more players in the "Best players by positions" section. This is the last update. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Contents: 1.Why did I write this FAQ 2.Controls 3.Game modes 4.Master league 5.Formation settings 6.Bonuses 7.Player names 8.Stadium names 9.Thanking 10.Ending ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Why did I write this FAQ Why?Well, this is the best football on PsOne,that's a good reason, right? This game, unlike other football games on PsOne is a real simulation,so it's harder to learn to play it well. This FAQ should help you in making your skills as good as they can get.I hope it will help at least just a little bit.I tried to concentrate on the game itself,so I didn't write the real names of the players which you can correct in Edit mode.I will probably write it one day,but right now,it's not really necesarry(you can find it in other FAQs anyway). ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Controls As I said, this is a simulation,so it's logical that controls are a bit more complex. Here they are: Offence: D-pad,Analog-move player X-pass the ball O-pass a high ball Triangle-pass the ball into space in front of a player Square-shoot the ball on the goal(pace of the ball depends on how long you hold the button) R1-dash,player runs faster L1-bicycle dribbling L1+X-double pass L1+O-double pass with a high ball L1+Triangle-pass the ball into space with a high ball L1+Square-lob the goalkeeper Square+X-fake shot Square+Triangle-cancel shot There is also one other move you can do when attacking. When you pass the ball to a player, you automatically control him, right?Well, just before the ball reaches him,you can press R1.That way,he will let the ball go between his legs going to the player behind him. This is a cunning trick, and it often fools the opponent's defence, giving you a chance to score. It is best that you train this in the Training mode until you can do it perfectly. Defence: D-pad,Analog-move player X-one player tries to steal the ball from the opponent O-tackle,kick the ball if you have it in possesion Square-kick the ball if you have it in possesion R1-dash L1-switch the player you control Offence,Defence: Start-pause menu When you pause the game, you're given some options: Resume match-you guess what this means, right? Formation-two options: Formation setting-there's a special chapter about this Formation Data manager-if you already have a formation set,you can load it here,or save a new one Camera type-you can set the view on the pitch(in my opinion,Broadcast is the best choice) Screen setting-turn ON/OFF player names, radar, strategy icons time, result Game speed-this is individual:if you like to dribble, choose a slower game,or, if you just like fast running, max out the yellow line:) Sound setting-a few useful options here:change the volume, turn the commentator ON/OFF,or even change the language of the commentator(it's sooo fun to listen him talk in German:) Quit game-this too,you should understand ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Game modes You have many modes you can choose when you want to play: +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Exhibition mode++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Exhibition Match: Nothing out of the ordinary here:choose from 54 national teams,9 hidden teams, or Master league teams. When you pick the teams, you have to decide a few things about the upcoming match: Day/Night-this choice doesn't affect players in any way Season/Weather-the only thing that changes are sleeves on shirts Match time-5,10,15,20,25,30 minutes-choose your favourite COM difficulty-three levels-Easy,Normal,Hard.Only if your a total begginer, choose Easy, otherwise, take Hard.Normal is a waste of time. Match type-you can decide what happens if the game is a draw Strip Selection-choose the colour of the strips Stadium-pick stadium P.K. Match: This is a penalty shootout, same as the one after the match is a draw. All Star Match: Here you can play only with two teams:European All Stars, and World All Stars. You can unlock these teams in Exhibition and Training mode, too. Master League Data: Load one or two teams you have in Master League.Everything else is same as in Exhibition Match. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++International league++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This is a mode that WILL take a lot of time to finish(unless you're a freak and play 10-15 matches in a row),but you get a pretty good reward after it. You can pick the type of the league:half season,or a full season. In half season, you have to play 15 matches, and in full, you do it one more time, playing as a guest,so its 30 matches. All three difficulty modes are available for you to choose. You have to pick 16 teams that will play the league.Keep in mind that the first team you pick will be the one that you will control. Also, you can randomly choose teams by pressing Square([]). ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Cup mode++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ When you pick Cup mode, you will get the following cups to choose from: International Cup-32 teams, all national teams can participate. You can choose difficulty, match lenghth. European Cup-16 teams, only European teams can participate(logically).Choose difficulty and match lenghth. American Cup-only teams from the north and south American continent can play. Determine the difficulty and match lenghth. African Cup-teams from the African continent participate. You can choose difficulty and match lenghth(man,I'm tired of repeating this) Asian Cup-teams from the Asian continent participate. You can choose....... You should know it by now! Konami Cup-this is a completely different thing:all national teams can play, and you decide all the details:cup type, group names,1st and 2nd leg matches(Yes/No)... For all cups there's a common rule:the first team you choose is the one you play with. Also, all three difficulty levels are available. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Master league+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ There's a whole chapter about this,so read it. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++UMBRO Training Centre+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ A very useful mode.Pick any team you like(bonus and master league teams are also available)and train with them. There are a few modes that you can choose: normal training,1-2 Pass and Shoot,Free Kicks(you might wanna stick to this one a bit longer and practise),Left side Corner Kicks,Right side Corner Kicks. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Edit mode+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ This is not really a game mode, but anyway, just a little explanation: Basically, you can create your own players, and put them in any national team,so that you can play with them in any mode you wish. You can also modify the original players, and change anything you want on them.Too bad that you can't change names of the players in classical teams,(so the Heroic Holland players will stay Orangexxx forever).IMO,this is one of the rare big mistakes in this wonderful game. There are also options where you can just modify player names and numbers(you will need this when you decide to correct player's names). +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++Game options+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ You can load from Memory Card,or watch replays that you saved on Memory Card. In Button configuration you can change functions of the buttons, but i wouldn't recommend it because it's perfect as it is.Sound settings let you change volume, turn ON/OFF commentary, and change commentary language. In Screen setting you can position the screen. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Master league This is,without any doubt, the best and most fun mode to play.At the beggining, all you have to do is choose game difficulty. But!Be warned that there is no Easy difficulty, you can only choose between Normal and Hard.If you are a total begginer, you can choose Normal, but otherwise,Hard is the right difficulty to play Master league. After this, you're given a second choice:pick your team. There are 32 teams you can choose from. However, the names are not real, because dear Konami didn't have a license.Doesn't matter, you can recognise them by the colour of their strip. In case you still have a problem, here are the real names: Aragon-Manchester United Noordzeenkanaal-Feyonoord London-Arsenal Flandre-PSV Eindhoven Liguria-Chelsea Marche-Internazionale Europort-Liverpool Piemonte-Juventus Yorkshire-Leeds Lombardia-AC Milan Highlands-Newcastle Umbria-Lazio Vascongadas-Aston Villa Emilia-Parma Cataluna-Barcelona Toscana-Fiorentina Navarra-Real Madrid Abruzzi-Roma Andalucia-Valencia Westfalen-Borrusia Dortmund Cantabria-Deportivo La Coruna Anhalt-Bayern Munchen Provence-Monaco Ruhr-Bayer Leverkusen Languedoc-Olympique Marseille Peloponnisos-Olympiakos Normandie-Paris Saint Germain Byzantinobul-Galatasaray Medoc-Bordeaux Marmara-Dynamo Kyev Rijnkanaal-Ajax Patagonia-Boca Juniors There, quite a selection, don't you think?Anyway, you may think that you can take Man UTD.,for instance, and rush through the league?Well, that's where you're wrong. You see,it doesn't matter if you take Man UTD.,Real or Fiorentina. You start with the same miserable bunch of losers, doesn't matter wich team you pick. Here is the team: GK Ivanov CB Cecil CB Stromer CB Vorlander* CB Daric SB Eddington Note: CB Valery* SB Nachtegall Players that have * behind their name DH Iorga DH Harty are,IMO the best players in this team DH Cellini SH Matt and you might wanna stick on them for SH Ximenes OH Ostwald a while, especially Miranda. SH Espinas WG Burchet* OH Miranda* CF Njord CF Castello* CF Oranges102* CF Baroja GK Kelsen GK Zamenhof Now,teams will be divided into two divisions.Naturally, stronger teams end up in the first division, and the weaker ones go in the second. You will start in the second division. To make a decent team, you will have to buy new players, and sell the old ones. However, you do not gain any points by selling a player.Keep in mind that you can't sell a player unless you're buying a new one,so your teams allways has to have 23 players. You start off with 20 points, wich is not enough to buy a player any better then the one you already have.So wait a bit longer, until you gain more points. How do you get points?Well, you have to play matches, and if they are a draw,or you win,you get points. If the match is a draw, you get a poor ammount of points:only 2.And it doesn't matter if the result is 0:0,or 10:10,you still get only 2 points. When you win,you get points based on the goals you scored and the ones you got in your net. Finally have a nice ammount of points?Wanna buy a player?Well, you should buy a good attacker, first. And I would reccomend that you don't buy a cheap, good for nothing player,no,it's much better to save until you have about 50 points. Then go and look for a good player! In the very beggining,I suggest the you choose between these two:Ronaldo and Shevchenko. They both have great speed, shooting abilities, and technique.Altough,I believe that Shevchenko is a bit better when it comes to headers,so...But,it's up to you to decide. Both of them are really great. When you decide, put him in place of one of the goalkeepers(preferably Zamenhof),because you really don't need 3 GKs.After your first transfer, things should go more easily now.You SHOULD get more points per match, because you have a good attacker now.The only problem is that your super attacker could get injured,so he would be out for at least 2-3 games(if you're lucky). That's why it wouldn't be a bad idea to buy yourself another good CF to be sure that you will not stop getting good ammounts of points. The following evolution of the team I should leave to you, because everyone has their own favourite team, players and tactics. But,then again, you should look to make your team as strong as possible,so I'll make a little list of best players in their positions. Goalkeeper: Note: 1.Kahn(Germany) From the wide choice of goalkeepers, these are 2.Binks(Eternal England) the best, probably.Of course, you will not buy 5 3.Chilavert(Paraguay) GKs,so pick your 2(enough) favorites. The 2nd is 4.Buffon(Italy) Gordon Banks,in case you didn't recognize him, 5.Filimol(Always Argentina) and number 5 is Fillol(can't remember his name) Defense: Note: 1.Barisi(Immortal Italy) Everything is pretty simple here. You should buy 2.Campbell(England) them all, because they're all great defenders. 3.Nesta(Italy) There are many, many more great defenders, like 4.Thuram(France) Lucio,W. Samuel...Number 1 is one of Italy's 5.Stam(Netherlands) greats,Franco Baresi. Midfield: Note: 1.Madorna(Always Argentina) I wasn't sure whether or not put Maradona(1st) 2.Zidane(France) here,or in attackers section, but here,I think 3.R.Carlos(Brazil) it's better this way.He is a must buy,so is 4.Cozi(Beloved Brazil) Platini.Oh,who am I kidding, they are all great 5.Argenti(Forever France) and deserve to be bought.Number 4 is Zico. Attack: Note: 1.Shevchenko(Ukraine) What to say,Pele(2nd) is a must buy,so is the 2.Perles(Beloved Brazil) great Di Stefano(3rd).Shevchenko is in front 3.Di Sephoro(Always Argentina) of Pele only because of his great speed,but... 4.Ronaldo(Brazil) The King is the best attacker here.He is very 5.Henry(France) expensive, but he's worth of it! Yep,that would be it.Hope you have a clear picture of your team now.Collect points, buy players, and enjoy the best mode of the whole game. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Formation settings Oh,this is a great playground for all you undiscovered managers out there. This is the place where you can change EVERY little detail in your team that has something to do with tactics.Needless to say, this number of details could be a little confusing for a begginer,so let's take it step by step: Exit-exit the formation setting mode, return to game Substitutions: Substitute the player with another one from the bench.you have total of 23 players,11 of them are playing(you know that much I hope),and 12 are sitting on the bench.Every player has letters behind his name. Those letters represent his position on the field. GK-goalkeeper CB-centre back stopper SB-side back DMF-defensive midfielder SMF-side midfielder OMF-offensive midfielder CF-centre forward WG-winger Note that the letters may slightly change depending on the formation you have set,but it's not a drastical change, and basically there aren't any differences so,for instance, instead of SB it will say LB(left back),or RB(right back). Now, you may have noticed already that when you press R1 different coloured arrows appear instead of the letters. Those arrows represent the current shape of the players. The shape for each player is individual, and completely random. There are 4 types of arrows, and depending on them, some of the player's statistics (don't know how else to call it) change. Here are the changes: Arrow colour Stamina Balance Accel Accuracy Positivness Blue -1 - -2 -2 -2 Grey -3 - -3 -3 -4 Orange +1 +1 +1 +1 +1 Red +2 +2 +2 +1 +2 There. As you can see,it's much better when you have many players with red or orange arrows. It is also possible(and it will often happen) that a player doesn't have an arrow at all,but a green rectangle. That means that none of his statistics change. This is also a good thing, and it's considered to be a good shape.Every time you select a substitution, you will see numbers that represent how good a player is in a specific area of the game. The maximum number is 19, and the minimum is 12.Here are the explanations for each category: Attack-how good the player is when attacking Defence-how good the player is when defending the goal Balance-how strong a player is in physical contact Stamina-how fast does the player get fatigued Speed-how fast is the player when dashing Accel-decides the time that player needs to reach max. speed Response-decides the player's speed of reactions on high balls Dribbling-how good is the player when dribbling Passing-the higher the number, more accurate passing Accuracy-decides how accurate player's shots on goal are Power-higher number, greater shot power Header-if the number is high, player will hit the ball with his head more accuratly Jump-determines how high does the player jump Technique-higher number, better ball control Curving-this is important for free kicks and corners, player is able to curve the ball better if the number is higher Positivness-you can't see this in the formation setting, but only in Edit mode. If the number is low, player will fatigue more when losing,or,when he's injured, his stamina will decrease rapidly Now you can see that there are many factors that decide how will the player play the match.Just a little tip about the shape arrows before I continue: I've seen many times that human players substitute good (virtual)players only because of their shape. This is not a good thing to do.If,let's say, you're playing with England, and Owen is in bad shape(grey arrow),and Sheringham is in great shape(red arrow),you still shouldn't change Owen, because he is way better in attack then Sheringham(sorry Teddy). So,it's not always in the arrow colour.Think about it,and don't make these mistakes. One more thing about substitutions.Sometimes it may happen that a player gets injured. There are two types of injuries:the ones with the orange cross and ones with the red cross. When the one with the red cross happens, you HAVE to change the player, whether you want it or not.But don't worry, this doesn't happen too often. The easier type of injuries(orange cross) doesn't ask of you to change the player. He can continue the match, but I would strongly advise against it.Not only that he will be good for nothing on the field, but the injurie will become heavier, and it will take him longer to recover(this happens only when you're playing the league, cup,or Master L.).That's about all there is to say about substitutions, so,hopefully,I gave you a few useful advices in this text.Of course, like in real football, you have 3 substitutions per match. Select Kicker: Here you can choose who will take free kicks, penalties and corners. In the 1st column you decide about free kicks.Small letter S represents free kicks from short distances, and L is for long distance free kicks. The 2nd column:corner kicks. As you may have guessed,R is for right side corner kicks, and L is for left side corner kicks. For these two decisions(free and corner kicks) I would suggest you use players with good power and curving abilities(especially for free kicks),and for corners,i wouldn't be bad if the player had good passing abilities. As for the penalty kicks, everyone has their own way of shooting,so some will shoot in the middle of the goal(in that case use someone with good power),and some will shoot in the corners,so accuracy is crucial. And one more tip:avoid shooting penalties by ground, because there is a higher probability that the player will miss,or that the goalkeeper will save it. Choose captain: Choose the captain of the team. This does not affect the players in any way,so it doesn't really matter who you pick. Formation: Things are getting serious at this point. This is a bit more complex part,so read carefully. Change: Let's you change the formation. There are 16 different formations. Here they are: 4-5-1A 3-6-1A 5-4-1A 4-5-1B 3-6-1B 5-4-1B 4-4-2A 3-5-2A 5-3-2A 4-4-2B 3-5-2B 5-3-2B 4-3-3A 3-4-3A 4-3-3B 3-4-3B Those are the formations available. It's very important to understand that there isn't the "best" formation or the "worst".Every formation is intended for a different type of game, and it depends on your tactic(if you have one, that is).So don't be afraid to try them all, until you find one that completely suits your style of playing. So,for instance,if you base your game on attackers good with headers, you won't use 4-5-1,because 4-3-3 is intended for that style of play, and it suits much better. You noticed the letters A and B behind every formation? Those letters decide the formation of your midfielders. The letter A is better if you plan to attack, because more midfielders will join the attack. If you're defending,B formation is much better for you, midfielders will become DMFs(defensive midfielders). That's all there is to know about changing the formation for now(there is something more, later). Defence type: Change the defence type for every player. There are three defence types: Covering: Player covers the specific area(his position determines the area). Zone mark: Player covers a bigger area(usually two times bigger then covering).Sometimes the player may go to the closest position and switch his mate who is wandering who knows where. Man mark: Player concentrates on guarding only one specific player(you order wich). You can choose the type of defence:normal or agressive. They aren't very different. This is a good option when the opponent has a specificly dangerous player,so you need someone to watch over him all the time. That's it about Defence type. Attack attitude: You can decide the attitude for every player. Not much of a science, really.Just press right if you want the player to join attack more often,or press left if you want the player to join defence more often. Position edit: Back to formation bussines. When you finally set a formation, you can change the positions of players one by one,if you'd like.Choose a player, and a rectangle will show up,telling you where can you move the player. You can move him inside of the rectangle. One of the best and most useful options, actually, because it basically let's you to make your own formation(s). That's about it for formation. Strategy: Now for some serious brainstorming! This is a tough part to understand,so... You actually don't have to set the strategy settings to play a good game. But if you want to play Arsene Wenger(or Sir Alex) a bit, this is the right place for you!Okay, when you choose this you're given the following options: Strategy settings A/D Level Strategy settings: You have two set-ups:manual and semi-auto.Everything is the same, but only in semi-auto the computer does the 75% of the work for you,and you have to turn one strategy ON/OFF.This is not my favourite,it's better that you make your own decisions when to turn the specific strategy ON/OFF.So let's go for the manual: First of all,you need to know that you can have maximum of four strategies in the match.Four buttons represent four strategies, and in the menu you decide wich button is wich strategy. When you're in game, you turn the strategy ON/OFF by pressing L2 + one of the buttons(X,O,Triangle and Square). Here are the strategies and brief explanations: No strategy-speaks for it self Normal-nothing Centre attack-the centre back joins the attack occasionally R.Side attack-the right back joins the attack L.Side attack-the left back joins the attack Opp.Side attack-for instance, the RB joins the attack, but goes on the left side Change sides-LB and RB change sides and guard different areas CB Overlap-the CB always joins attack Zone press-slowly all players make pressing and win field possesion Conterattack-players wait for opponents error and then quickly go to attack Offside trap-when you believe you're in a good position, make an offside trap for opponents attacker On the last two strategies, you change the formation,so you can quickly change them while playing. Sometimes it can be hard to remember what strategies you exactly have, and what's their use,but with time you'll get the hang of it.Whew! Finally done with the strategy! Copy formation: This is the last option in the formation settings. It allows you to save the formation setting you have made.Very useful. But if you want it saved after you turn off the console, you have to go to Formation Data Manager. And that's it conserning the formation.I hope now you can see what a game this is,and that it is really a simulation, full of small, but important details. But, isn't that what makes a good game? ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Bonuses Well,of course, this game too has it's rewards when you start seriously playing it.Here are the bonuses you can unlock while playing it(note that difficulty and match lenghth don't matter in any of the cups): Euro Elite-win Internatinal Cup World Elite-win International League Eternal England-win European Cup with England Forever France-win European Cup with France Heroic Holland-win European Cup with Netherlands Immortal Italy-win European Cup with Italy Genuine Germany-win European Cup with Germany Beloved Brazil-win American Cup with Brazil Always Argentina-win American Cup with Argentina Master League teams-win Master League 1st division Club House stadium-win Konami Cup Those are the bonuses.I hope I didn't forget anything. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Player names As you know,Konami didn't get the full license for using all the real names (for players, stadiums and teams). You can't change the stadium names and team names, but luckily you can correct the names of players.Misspelled names are usually just anagrams and you can see what they should be like, but anyway,I did promise I'd write them,so...I wrote all the national teams, and correct names for the players. As for the stadiums and teams, you will find real names for them also(teams-Master league chapter,stadiums-somewhere below). ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ + Big thanks to BigCj34,if it weren't for him,you probably wouldn't even see + + this section.I took at least 70% of the names from his FAQ,hope he's cool + + with that.Of course,he gets full credit.BTW,you should really check his + + FAQ out. It's great, and full of useful information. And no,he didn't pay me + + to say this;) + ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Note: +++++ I wrote the REAL names(well, mostly surnames) and sometimes you may see that they can't fit in the provided space(10 letters). You'll have to come up with your ways of fitting them in(sorry 'bout this).
