Thanks!! -------- Controls -------- It is quite noteworthy when reading this section to understand that Players 1 and 3 must use Control Pad 1, and Players 2 and 4 must use Control Pad 2, if any. The controls themselves remain the same, though. - D-Pad: Move marker - 1 Button: Cancel choices; go to previous screen - 2 Button: Confirm choices; continue to next screen - Pause/Start: Pause and unpause game ----------------- Modes of the Game ----------------- There are four modes in which you can play. Each mode can be played with just one player, and Match and Stroke Play can be played with up to four humans and computers combined. The modes: - Practice, which is just as it says: a practice mode. - Match Play, in which you compete across several holes against an opponent or multiple opponents. The winner is based upon who won more individual holes. More on scoring/winning/losing later. - Stroke Play, in which you and an opponent(s) compete across several holes. The overall winner is based solely on end scores, much like traditional golf. Again, more on the in-depth stuff later. - Pro Tournament is a serial, one-human-player tournament based on Stroke Play rules. There are three tournaments in all, and you progress from one to the other. Play, again, is like Stroke Play, and this is basically your career mode. -------------------- Generalized Gameplay -------------------- When you begin a hole, you will obtain various information on the hole. This will include wind speed and direction, par (base level of shots), distance to the hole in yards (1 yard is a little under 1 meter), shot number, player number, and a few other things. During this time, you can use the D-Pad to adjust your trajectory, a good idea if there's wind or terrestial incline against you. Press "2" and you will begin by choosing your golf club. There are a number of them, namely those in the following table. Use the D-Pad to navigate up and down through the list. As a note on the below table, the relative ease of the shot is calculated based upon the amount of red (perfect shot) in the bar for the first number, and ONLY the green for the second, and the total for both in the third. O---------------------------O---------------------O---------------------------O | Golf Club Names | Approximate Range | Relative Ease of Shot | | | on Grass Turf | (Red, Green, Both) | O---------------------------O---------------------O---------------------------O | 1W (One Wood or Driver) | 220 yards | 3.85% 3.85% 7.69% | | 2W (Two Wood) | 200 yards | 7.69% 3.85% 11.54% | | 3W (Three Wood) | 190 yards | 7.69% 3.85% 11.54% | | 4W (Four Wood) | 180 yards | 11.54% 7.69% 19.23% | | 5W (Five Wood) | 170 yards | 11.54% 7.69% 19.23% | O---------------------------O---------------------O---------------------------O | 1I (One Iron) | 170 yards | 3.85% 7.69% 11.54% | | 2I (Two Iron) | 160 yards | 7.69% 7.69% 15.38% | | 3I (Three Iron) | 150 yards | 11.54% 11.54% 23.08% | | 4I (Four Iron) | 140 yards | 11.54% 7.69% 19.23% | | 5I (Five Iron) | 130 yards | 11.54% 7.69% 19.23% | | 6I (Six Iron) | 120 yards | 15.38% 7.69% 23.08% | | 7I (Seven Iron) | 110 yards | 15.38% 7.69% 23.08% | | 8I (Eight Iron) | 100 yards | 19.23% 7.69% 26.92% | | 9I (Nine Iron) | 90 yards | 19.23% 7.69% 26.92% | O---------------------------O---------------------O---------------------------O | PW (Putting Wedge) | 80 yards | 23.08% 7.69% 30.77% | | SW (Small (?) Wedge) | 70 yards | 26.92% 7.69% 34.62% | | PT (Putter) | 40 yards | 76.92% 0.00% 76.92% | O---------------------------O---------------------O---------------------------O Also noteworthy - the Putter can only be used on the green (area near the hole) and the 1W/Driver can only be used on the tee (first) shot. "W" or "Woods" cannot be used in the rough. After having chosen your club, press "2". Then look at the golf ball on the screen. You will now choose where to hit the ball. There are a few ways to hit it, depending on desired results. You can also combine effects, and each one has two "degrees" (you can go twice to the left, for example). - Higher up, to induce topspin, making the ball go farther - Lower down, to induce backspin, making the ball stop easier or roll backward - To the left, to make the ball go to the right - To the right, to make the ball go left - Dead center, to make the ball go straight and normal Press "2" to confirm, then you begin with the power meter. You'll want the meter to land in the red area with the arrowhead. You can also use Up/Down on the D-Pad to adjust the actual power of the shot. Press "2" to confirm and shoot. This generally will repeat for a bit until you reach the green near the hole. It gets a bit more specialized there. Firstly, you'll strongly want to take note of the territory near the hole. The markings on the ground (namely the arrowheads) indicate the incline. Putting is a low-power shot, which is greatly affected by incline. Press "2" when you have the desired trajectory, then once more to begin the usual powering of the shot. The hole ends when you have the ball in the hole. There are usually nine or eighteen holes played throughout the course of a match, and in a way similar to this. --------------- Scoring Details --------------- Each given hole will have a set "par" on it. The par is the number of shots it ideally takes to finish a hole. If you go under this, you earn points (your score is negative, but that's good), and if you go over, you lose points (you gain positive points). Hitting exactly par neither hurts or helps you. The number of shots you take can also be affected by two other things - water hazards and out-of-bounds area. Both are considered out-of-bounds. This bad shot will count against you, and you'll be penalized an additional shot. For example, if you hit the water on your first shot, consider the next shot you take your third and not the second. At the end of the hole, the number of shots you take, minus the par, is your score. If such is positive, you went over (bogey); if negative, you did good by going under (birdie, eagle, albatross). And, of course, par is neither good or bad. In Stroke Play, and thusly the Pro Tournament, your overall score is based on the strokes you took across every hole minus the summed pars of every hole, or just the added scores you got on every hole. In Match Play, your record is based on the number of "wins" per hole. If you have the best score of the participants, that is one win and there's nothing else to it. This can mean that someone did three shots better than you, but you still won more holes overall and are still the winner. To the curious, the relatively official names for various shots: O----------------O-----------------O | Name of Shot | Score Changes | O----------------O-----------------O | Hole-in-One | (Par) - 1 | | Albatross | -3 | | Eagle | -2 | | Birdie | -1 | | Par | ±0 | | Bogey | +1 | | Double Bogey | +2 | | Triple Bogey | +3 | O----------------O-----------------O O=============================================================================O | This is the end of KeyBlade999's | | FAQ for the Sega Master System game | | Golfamania. | O=============================================================================O ________________ | ____________ | | | | | | | | | | |____________| |________________________________________ | |____________| |_________________________ | | | | | | |\ /\ /| | | | | | | | \ / \ / | | | |____________| | | | (_) (_) | | |________________| |_| |_| ___ ___ ___ /'__`\ /'__`\ /'__`\ /\ \_\ \ /\ \_\ \ /\ \_\ \ \ \___, \ \ \___, \ \ \___, \ \/__,/\ \ \/__,/\ \ \/__,/\ \ \ \_\ \ \_\ \ \_\ \/_/ \/_/ \/_/ KeyBlade999
