Credits | |----------------------------| ------------------ |I. Introduction| ------------------ Okay, just to let you know this is the first walkthrough that I have ever written so bear with me. When you first turn the game on you get a video clip that sets the background for the whole game. The film starts at the first game of the World Open doubles tournament in the Peach Dome. Mario and Luigi are playing Wario and Waluigi. The first shot that you get is Mario hitting the ball and winning the match against Wario and Waluigi. Wario and Waluigi, frustrated, go to the tournament board and draw on Mario and Luigi's picture. They then get chased by the police all Peach Dome. As they are running they find an open door which they fall through. This takes them dowm to Bowser's lair. Here Bowser trains them up so that they can beat the two brothers in final where they replace DK and Yoshi. Instead of playing tennis in this final they shot Bob-ombs at Mario and Luigi with Bowser watching above in his baloon. Then all of the other characters start to join Mario and Luigi in hitting the Bob-ombs back and at Bowser's baloon. Eventually one hits and blows upthe baloon and WArio, Waluigi and Bowser all lose. --------------------- |II. Rules of Tennis| --------------------- I am going to start with the rules of tennis for those of you that don't know. If you do you might as well move ontothe next section. ------B------------------- | | |G | | | | | | | | | | |E| |E| | | | | Okay, this is a pretty accurate drawing of a tennis court. I have | D D | labelled the most important lines and marks. | |---------------C----| | | | | | | A - The Net. This is the net which separates your half of the court. | | | | | You have to try and hit the ball over this. | | F | | | | | | | B - The Base Line. This is the line which you stand on when you | | | | | serve. Also, if the ball bounces behind this line when you hit it, | | | | | it is 'OUT' and your opponent gets the point. --------A----------------- | | | | | C - The Service Line. When you serve, the ball can't bounce past this | | | | | line otherwise itis a 'FAULT' and you have to serve again. If you do | | | | | this twice in a row your opponent gets the point. | | F | | | | | | | D - The Sidelines. If you hit the ball and it bounces outside this | | | | | line in singles (1-on-1) it is out and your opponent gets the point. | |---------------C----| | Also when serving this line is a boundary just like the service line. | D D | | | | | E - The Alleys. When playing doubles (2-on-2) you canhit the ball |E| |E| into this (ie past the sideline) and it wont be 'OUT'. But it will | | | | be if you hit it past the Alleys. | | | | | | |G | | F - The Centre line. This line separates the front of the court. ------B------------------- When serving you must hit the ball to the oppositeside of the court as well as infront of the service line and inside the sideline. G - The Centre Mark. It is in line with the centre line. When serving you can stand between this mark and the side line as long as you are on the base line. Well, thats the actuall court but what about scoring I hear you ask. At the start of the game both players have 0 points, called 'love'. When a player hits the ball so that it bounces twice, hits their opponents or their opponent hits the ball out or does a double fault when serving they gets a point. The first point is 15, the next you get takes you up to 30, then 40, and then if you win another point you win the 'GAME' as it is called. NOTE: The points don not need to be consecutive for you to win the game unless you are at 'DUECE'. The first to either 2 or 6 games wins the 'SET'. You either need 1, 2 or 3 sets to win the match depending on how long the match is. To win a game at 'DUECE' you need to win by 2 consecutive points. But if you get the first point (called 'ADVANTAGE') and then your opponent wins the next point it goes back to duece. Also. if a set has gone to a draw (6-6 because you need to be winning by 2 games to win a set) you go into a 'TIE-BREAK'. Each rally that you win is worth 1 point, not 15, and the first to 7 points wins the tie-break and the set if they were 2 points or more ahead. Well, thats it for rules. There may seem to be a lot but you'll get use to them. ----------------- |III. Charcaters| ----------------- I am going to set this section out this way for each character. Name: Characters name (character type) Description: Ratings: Speed: /10 (how quick the character is) Power: /10 (how powerful the character is) Lunge: /10 (how far the character can reach and dive for the ball) Serve: /10 (how good the characters serve is) Technique: /10 (how well the character controls the ball and for tricky charcters how much swerve they get on the ball) Power shots Offensive - power shot name: power shot description Defensive - power shot name: power shot descrition Verdict: /10 - what I think of the character There are 6 different kinds of characters: All-around players: Well balanced athletes who are great for rookie tennis players. They are proficient in both offensive adndefensive play. Technical players: Skilled tacticians who look to hit the ball in the farthest corners of the court and win with pin-point accuracy. Power players: Their physical strength is key to their games as they look to over power the opposition. Speed players: Fleet-of-foot athletes who can cover every corner of the court in the blink of an eye. Tricky players: Cunning specialists whose confusing shots curve making their final destinations difficult to determine. Defensive players: Patient players whose goal is to return everything and let their opponents make mistakes. ------------------------- |A. Mario (All-arounder)| ------------------------- Description: The hero of the game. He has a powerful shot and is quick on his feet. Ratings Speed:7/10 Power:7/10 Lunge:7/10 Serve:6/10 Technique:6/10 Power Shots Offensive - Iron Hammer: Mario's racket turns into a huge mallet and he wacks a fiery ball that knocks his opponent off the court. Defensive - Spin Jump Return: Mario jumps into the air and spins around which makes a whirlwind that moves to the ball and returns it. Verdict: 7/10 - A very good character for begginers. He is pretty good at everyting. ------------------------- |B. Luigi (All-arounder)| ------------------------- Description: He is taller than his older brother so has a better lunge that him. He also has better ball control that his famous sibling and he is very good at volleying. Ratings Speed:7/10 Power:7/10 Lunge:8/10 Serve:6/10 Tecnique:7/10 Power Shots Offensive - Squeaky Mallet: Identical to his brother's offensive power shot except his racket turns into a squeaky mallet. Defensive - Polterguster Return: Luigi throws his racket and controls it with his super-vacuum to hit the ball with a lot of curve on it's flight path. Verdict: 7/10 - He is better than his brother at everything. Again he is perfect for begginers. ---------------------- |C. Peach (Technical)| ---------------------- Description: Peach has incredible ball control and she is quick on her feet so she can get to the ball and place it beautifully. Ratings Speed:7/10 Power:5/10 Lunge:7/10 Serve:6/10 Technique:9/10 Power Shots Offensive - Super Peach Spin: A hard to reach shot with a large curve. It is very hard to return but if you go to the back of the court near the middle you should be able to return it. Defensive - Sweet Kiss Return: Peach blows a kiss which goes to the ball and brings it back to her so that she can hit it. Verdict: 8.5/10 - She is a great player for begginers and experts alike. She has an almost unstoppable offensive power shot but she does lack strengh and her game is affected by that. ---------------------- |D. Daisy (Technical)| ---------------------- Description: Her technique rating isn't as high as Peaches but her serve is better. She is slightly faster and more powerful than her as well. But her defensive power shot isn't as good. Ratings Speed:7/10 Power:7/10 Lunge:7/10 Serve:7/10 Technique:8/10 Power Shots Offensive - Wonder Flower: Daisy's racket turns into a giant flower and she uses it to hit the ball with a curved flight path. Defensive - Flowerbed Return: Daisy looks towards the ball and lunges for it over a flowerbed. Important Note: This power shot doesn't always work (practically the only defensive that doesn't) Verdict: 8/10 - She is better than Peach at almost everything except technique, but she doesn't have a very good net game. Not the best for begginers. ------------------ |E. Wario (power)| ------------------ DEscription: Wario is possibly the worst character in the game. He is very slow and is the weakest of all power characters. The only redeeming thing about himis that he has a good, if not funny, lunge. Ratings Speed:4/10 Power:8/10 Lunge:7/10 SErve:7/10 Technique:6/10 Power Shots Offensive - Thunder Cast Shot: The first time I came up against it I thought it was really good and I found it difficult to face, how wrong was I? He uses a Handcuff-n-Hammer to hit the ball. It handcuffs him, hits him on the head (electrifying him) and smashes the ball into his opponents court. Anyone that hits the ball will get electrified. Defensive - Ultra-hand Return: Wario pulls out this extending arm from nowhere. It streches out and hits the ball. Verdict: 4/10 - Wario is a very poor charcter. Do not use him in difficult games. ------------------------ |F. Waluigi (defensive)| ------------------------ Description: Waluigi is better than Wario but is still pretty useless. He is still slow but has far better reach. He is pretty good as a doubles partners though. Ratings Speed:5/10 Power:6/10 Lunge:9/10 Serve:7/10 Technique:7/10 Power Shots Offensive - Whirl-luigi: Waluigi bends back to makean upside-down 'L'. He then spins around and hits the ball with a curved path. Anyone that hits the ball will spin around. Defensive - Swimming Return: This is possibly the wierdest looking power shot in the game. Waluigi runs to the side of the court, gives himself a wet-willy and swims to the ball across the court that has changed into a swimming pool. Verdict: 6/10 - He would be a good player if he was faster and wasn't as tall (the ball can hit him easily). One for the experts. ------------------ |G. Yoshi (Speed)| ------------------ Description: Yoshi is one of the best characters in the game. He may be the slowest of the speed characters but his other stats are above average. Ratings Speed:8/10 Power:7/10 Lunge:7/10 Serve:7/10 Technique:7/10 Power Shots Offensive - Rainbow Flutter: Yoshi flutters up in the air and hits the ball which has a rainbow trail. Anyone that hits the ball is slowed down. Defensive - Rolling Egg Return: Yoshi turns into a Yoshi egg and rolls to the ball in it. He then pops out and hits the ball. Verdict: 8/10 - Yoshi's great, especially as a star player. EVery one of his stats is above average. ------------------------- |H. Koopa Troopa (speed)| ------------------------- Description: Koopa is one of the best characters. He is the fastest in the game eventhough he is a turtle, which makes no sense! His lunge is also brilliant but his serve lets him down. Ratings Speed:10/10 Power:7/10 Lunge:9/10 Serve:6/10 Technique:7/10 Power Shots Offensive - Water Bomb: Koopa's racket fills with water and he hits the ball as a drop shot. It moves slowly through the air which gives you enough time to get to the net to return it but it slows anyone that hits it down. This is the best power shot in the game! Defensive - Water Shell Dash: Koopa goes into his shell (as he does when moving around the court anyway) and zips to the ball. He then appears again and hits the ball. Verdict: 8.5/10 - As I have said he is one of the best characters in the game because of his immense speed, lunge and his offensive power shot. His serve could be better though. One for begginers and experts alike. ------------------------ |I. Donkey Kong (power)| ------------------------ Description: DK is the best of all power characters. He isn't the most powerful but he has a good lunge and above average technique. Ratings Speed:5/10 Power:9/10 Lunge:7/10 Serve:8/10 Technique:7/10 Power Shots Offensive - Barrle Cannon Blast: A big cannon appears behind DK which he jumps into. He then gets fired from it and body-slams the ball. It is that powerful that if you hit it you will be smashed back behind the base line. Defensive - Boomerang Banana Return: DK pulls out a banana (he was probably plannign to eat it after the match) and uses it as a boomerang. He throws it to the ball, it brings it back to him and he hits the ball. Verdict: 7/10 - HE is pretty good, just his speed lets him down. He has a big serve and if you want to play as a power character he is your best bet. ----------------------- |J. Diddy Kong (speed)| ----------------------- Description: He sits between Yoshi and Koopa Troopa on speed so is very quick and also he is stronger than he looks. Ratings Speed:9/10 Power:7/10 Lunge:7/10 Serve:7/10 Technique:7/10 Power Shots Offensive - Acrobatic Banana: He does some posing then a handstandmaking a banana shape.Wen he hits the ball ot has an immense curve to its flight path. Defensive - Barrel Jet: He pulls a barrel jet out of nowhere and he straps it to his He starts to fly and he does a loop-the-loop in the air whilst flying to the ball. When he gets to the ball he hits it with some power. Verdict: 7/10 - Very good character with well-rounded stats and a brilliandt offensive power shot but if you want a speed character go with Koopa Troopa. ----------------- |K. Boo (tricky)| ----------------- Description: Boo is the most trickyof all the tricky characters. His shots have crazy curves on them. Ratings Speed:6/10 Power:6/10 Lunge:8/10 Serve:6/10 Technique:8/10 Power Shots Offensive - Boo Blast: Boo holds his racket and spins. As he spins his racket turns into a giant Boo. When he hits the ball the giant boo turns into loads of little boo's which go with the ballmaking it hard to see the ball. Defensive - Boo Brigade Return: A load of boo's appear out of nowhere and they go with Boo as he flies to the ball and returns it. Verdict: 6/10 - Absolutely useless for begginers because he is very hard to control but he is the best in the game if you are an expert and can master him. ------------------------ |L. Shy Guy (Technique)| ------------------------ Description: Lots of people underestimate Shy Guy because of his size. But Shy Guy has brillliant technique and has a big lunge. Ratings Speed:6/10 Power:7/10 Lunge:8/10 Serve;6/10 Technique:9/10 Power Shots Offensive - Lightening Spear: Shy Guy dances around a bit and his racket turns into a spear. He jumps behind the ball, his spear gets electrified and he hits the ball. Anyone who hits the ball will get electrocuted. Defensive - Spear Dance Return: Again he dances around and his racket again turns into a spear. But this time his spear extends and hits the ball. Verdict: 7/10 - He is a good player with pretty good stats but his speed and servelet him dowm. He is great as a doubles partner though. ------------------- |M. Bowser (power)| ------------------- Description: The knig og the koopas is the second strongest character in the game. His shots are that powerful that if his opponent is small they will get knocked backwhen they hit the ball. Ratings Speed:5/10 Power:9/10 Lunge:5/10 Serve:8/10 Technique:5/10 Power Shots Offensive - Fire Breath: Bowser breths some fire then hits a very fast, powerful and fiery ball to his opponent. If you hit the ball you will be knocked back past the base line. Defensive - Spinning Shell Dash: Much like Koopa Troopa's defensive, Bowser divesinto his shell and spins to the ball. Verdict: 6/10 - He is an OK player but it is easy to hit the ball at him and his speed and technique are shocking. ------------------------ |N. Bowser Jr. (tricky)| ------------------------ Description: Bowser Jr. is the quickest of all tricky characters but his shots have teh least curve on them of all the tricky players. Ratings Speed:7/10 Power:7/10 Lunge:7/10 Serve:6/10 Technique:7/10 Power Shots Offensive - Magic Paint: Bowser Jr.'s racket turns into a Gabba brush. He paints the ball and hits it. When he hits it two other globs are hit as well. Also,it is a quick moving shot and is very hard to face. Note: The real ball is always in between the two globs of paint. Defesnive - Rolling Brush Return: He rolls to the ball on a brush and he hits it. Verdict: 7/10 - All his stats are above average and his offensive power shot is brilliant. That is all of the characters that you already have. I am now going to look at the unlockable ones. --------------------- |O. Fly Guy (tricky)| --------------------- Unlock: Beat the Mushroom, Flower, Star cups in singles. Description: Fly Guy is a Shy Guy with a propellor stuck in his head so he can fly. He has the worst reach in the game! Ratings Speed:7/10 Power:7/10 Lunge:5/10 Serve:6/10 Technique:7/10 Power Shots Offensive - Tornado Twist: Fly Guy flips upside-down and spins around on his propellor. This makes a whirlwind and he hits the ball. The ball has a curved flight path and whoever hits it spins around. Defensive - Tornado Return: He spins around and makes a tornado. This moves over to the ball and returns it. Verdict: 6/10 - Although he has some pretty good stats his reach is abismal. The only way to play with him is in doubles, he doesn't work very well in singles. --------------------------- |P. Paratroopa (technical)| --------------------------- Unlock: Beat the Mushroom, Flower and Star cups in doubles. Description: Paratroopa looks just like Koopa Troopa except his shell is red and he has wings. He has the best lunge in the game (he can dive across half the court if not more) and is the best character in the game. Ratings Speed:8/10 Power:7/10 Lunge:10/10 Serve:6/10 Technique:8/10 Power Shots Ofensive - Energy Ball: Paratroopa steps back and then moves forwards to the ball and hits a purple lob shot that has curve on it. Defensive - Sky Dive: Paratroopa flies up into the air, does a little pose and dives down to slice the ball. Verdict: 9/10 - Paratroopa is the best character in the game for begginers and experts alike. He is as quick as Yoshi who is a speed character, has the best lunge in the game, and is quite powerful as well. ------------------------ |Q. Wiggler (defensive)| ------------------------ Unlock: Beat the fire and Thunder cups in singles. Description: If you have never seen a wiggler in mario games (you obviously haven't played enough of them) he is a giant yellow caterpillar that is prone to getting angry and turning red. Ratings Speed:5/10 Power:7/10 Lunge:8/10 Serve:7/10 Technique:7/10 Power Shots Offensive - Anger Management: He faces the ball and goes red. He twists around then untwists himself to hit the ball with power. Defensive - Flutter Return: Wiggler grows wings and turns into a butterfly. He then flies to the ball and hits it. Verdict: 7/10 - He would be a great character, not just a good one, if he wasn't as tall and was quicker (much like the other defensive character Waluigi). -------------------------- |R. Petey Piranha (power)| -------------------------- Unlock: Beat the Fire and Thunder cups in doubles. Description: Basically he is a massive Piranha plant on legs. He is the strongest character in the game but also the slowest. Ratings Speed:3/10 Power:10/10 Lunge:7/10 Serve:8/10 Technique:7/10 Power Shots Offensive - Sludge Racket: He swallows his, then spits it out again covered in sludge. He hits the ball and the reciever gets covered in the sludge and is slowed down. Defensive - Piranha Swingback: He sicks up a piranha plant that lands near to the ball. This plant drop shots the ball adn then disappears. Verdict: 6/10 - He would be a great player if it wasn't for his abismal speed and his height. Everything else about him is good. ------------ |IV. Courts| ------------ Just so that you know I will be talking about ball speed (how fast the ball moves on the court) and Ball Bounce (How hard the ball bounces on the court. There are 2 different kinds of court: standard (normal tennis court) or gimmick (the court has a twist). Only Peach Dome courts don't have a gimmick. -------------------------- |A. Peach Dome Hard Court| -------------------------- Ball Speed: Normal Ball Bounce: Strong This is the first court that you will play on in tournament mode. The best way to play your opponent on this court is to get them to the back of the court then do a drop shot. If they manage to return the ball lob them. The one thing not to do is for both of you to stand at the net because they will just lob you and you will be screwwed unless you have a speedy character. Try to stand on the service line after the serve so that you can avoid lobbing or drop shots. ------------------------- |B.Peach Dome Clay Court| ------------------------- Ball Speed: Slow Ball Bounce: Weak This court is quite hard to play on because of the terrible stats. If you go for a drop shot your opponent will get to the ball and the same for a lob. I suggest that you stand at the net for this one and try force them to the back of the court now you just hit the ball to the side, smash works best, because they probably won't reach it. --------------------------- |C. Peach Dome Grass Court| --------------------------- Ball Speed: Fast Ball Bounce: Weak Finally the ball is fast, but if you volley the ball it will probably go out. Use the same techniques of the hard court but to more effect. The ball moves faster so it is harder to get to and on the shot the bounce is weak so it is harder to get to. ------------------------ |D. Luigi Mansion Court| ------------------------ Ball Speed: Fast Ball Bounce: Normal As you play on Luigi's court a load of poltergeists turn up to watch. If the ball bounces on your court on a ghost panel a ghost will appear on your side of the court and will get in the way and throw banana skins at you. To clear your half of the court of ghosts you need to hit the light bulb panel on your opponents court. I find the best way to play on this court is to stand by the net and volley the ball so that it doesn't bounce and hit the ball onto the ghost panels on your opponents court. ------------------------ |E. Delfino Plaza Court| ------------------------ Ball Speed: Normal Ball Bounce: Weak On this court on Delfino beach the court is lined with Piranha plants and water nozzles. If the ball bounces on a piranha plant icon a piranha plant will spit sludge on to it. This sludge slows you down and you need to run over the switches several times to get rid of the sludge. Play this court like a grass or hard. ------------------------ |F. Wario Factory Court| ------------------------ Ball Speed: Fast Ball Bounce: Strongest The worst player in the game has made a court in his honour (for being rubbish or something). The court is made of 2 conveyor belts. One at the back which moves horizontally and one at the front that moves vertically. To change the direction of the belts you need to hit the arrows that float above the net. Really you should stand at the back of the court behind the baseline so you aren't affected by the belts but then your opponent may just drop shot and you would be stuck. I would play this court as a fast character (Koopa Troopa) so that you can stand behind the baseline but still be able to get to the net quickly for a drop shot. ------------------------- |G. Gooper Blooper Court| ------------------------- Ball Speed: Fast Ball Bounce: Normal This court sits on top of a glass floor with fish swimming under it. The court is made of pannels that move in the direction of the arrow on it when the ball bounces on it making the court different sizes. If the ball hits the glass it is out. Try make your opponents court big and yours small so that your shots won't be out and theirs will easily be out. -------------------- |H. DK Jungle Court| -------------------- Ball Speed: Normal Ball Bounce: Normal In the middle of the jungle DK has made a court. Klaptraps (little lizards) wonder across the net. If you hit one when you return the ball it will latch onto your opponents leg slowing him/her down the more you hit the longer the chain and the slower they get. To get rid of the Klaptraps you must hit the ball onto the lightning pannel on your opponents half of the court. Other than that it is just a normal court. Thats all of the normal courts now the unlockable ones. -------------------------- |I. Bowser's Castle Court| -------------------------- Unlock: Beat the Thunder Cup in single mode. Ball Speed: Normal Ball Bounce: Weak Inside Bowser's castle he has built a court suspended over a pool of lava held up just by chains in the corners of the court. So as the characters move around the court tilts so players slide around the court. Note: Paratroopa, Boo and Fly Guy aren't affected by or affect the tilt of the court. ---------------------------- |J. Super Mario Bros. Court| ---------------------------- Ball Speed: Slow Ball Bounce: Strongest Yes, this is the original court from the days when mario and luigi had to fight the enemies that came out of the pipes and it is like that on this court. There are two warp pipes at the side of the court that just keeps spewwing out enemies and the world famous POW block floats above the net. When the POW block is hit all of the enemies are stunned until it is next hit. If you walk into the enemies when they are stunned they will be killed. There are different kinds of enemies. Koopas:Koopas slowly trudge their way across the court. If you touch one you will stunned and you will spin around for a second. 1 hit of the POW Block stuns them, so take them out! Crabs:Crabs slowly make their way across the court much like Koopas. Once you hit the POW Block, a stripe will appear on their white "shorts" (Or whatever it is) and will walk even faster. If you hit the POW Block again, you will stun them, so use that chance to take them out! Fighter Flies:These annoying purple bugs hop up and down over the court. One hit of the POW Block will stun them. Of course, they have to be landed on the ground for them to be stunned, otherwise they will keep on being a pain. Freezies:These small icicles aren't out to be a distraction. They are there to cause trouble on the court. When they reach the middle of the court, Freezies stop and dissapear, but they freeze the entire side of the court they were on! One hit of the POW Block will instantly kill them, so try to aim the ball to do so. Really you need to play at the net so that the enemies aren't in the way. --------------- |V. Game Modes| --------------- There are loads of different game modes and different kinds of games so I am going to go through them. --------------- |A. Exhibition| --------------- This is the way that you play a game of tennis. Simple as that. If you just want to play a game of tennis then this is what you need to go onto. 1) Go onto 'Exhibition mode' on the main screen. 2) Choose your character (they will appear in the middle of the screen). Also, here, you can add extra players to the game and if you press '-' on your wiimote you make the character left-handed. After choosing your character you can pick doubles or singles and if doubles you partner. 3) Choose the court that you are going to play on. 4) Choose which game you are going to play (standard, ring shot, item battle, or if the court has one, gimmick) 5) If in standard Choose options: Power shot: on/off Sets: 1, 3, 5 Games: 2, 6 Team configuration: Change around the team members in doubles. Shot lesson: on/off Control Options: Change the control style Ring Shot In ring shot you score points by hitting the ball through rings. The smaller the ring the more points it is worth.
