I first started playing Dead Rising about a month ago, and found that there were many things to do in the game, but unfortunately, the constant mission timer kept me from fully enjoying this game (that and the constant calls from Otis, just to tell me which part of the 'S.Cabeza Mall' I was in). I wanted the freedom to go where ever I wanted to, without having to spend time on missions. In essence, if you've ever wanted the whole mall to yourself, then this is the guide for you. When I first started the game (after the helicopter photo mini-game), I noticed that there was a kill count on the bottom right corner of the screen, which indicated how many zombies I had killed. Starting off in the Entrance Plaza the counter was at 0. I could see all the zombies pounding on the doors to be let in, and I knew that someone would make a dumb mistake and let them in. As predicted, someone did, and now the mall is full of zombies. The game once again give you control, and you're left in a frantic atempt at making your way to the stair case. While making my way to the staircase, I tried killing any zombie in my path, and at level one, I thought 23 zombies killed was a huge accomplishment (you can stop laughing now). I knew that you can save and then restart the game with your new stats, so it was my goal to come back when I reached my max lvl and see how many zombies I could kill in the begining, before my health reached 0. So lo and behold, when I reached lvl 50, I did just this. I managed to make 400 kills on my first try at lvl 50, before losing all my health. I knew I could do better, so each time I restarted my game and tried to get more and more zombie kills. My record (to date) is 1400+ kills (before I got bored). After getting lots of kills, I decided to try to play the game as normal again, but something strange occured...where the game was anything but normal. Now, here I am writing to you about my experiences. ======================== 2.0 - Intro to Mission Free Mode ======================== This mode in Dead Rising is not one that was intentionally placed by the producers/creators. The mode this guide is written about is named "Mission Free Mode" by me, because I have not seen anyone write about this on any hint/cheat forum and site I've visted, since the game came out. It can officially be called "Mission Free Mode," because I am the first to find this mode (and also because I said so :P). This mode is not the same thing as "Infinity Mode." Infinity Mode takes place, where you have no missions, but the weapons and food will not respawn, and EVERYONE tries to kill you. In this mode, you get to play the full three days without being timed on missions. Using this mode will not ruin your 360, nor will it defect the disk. It will however make the game dramatically different than the way it plays already, by altering the timer, missions, ending and enemies. You may want to try this mode, if you think you've already done everything there is to do in Dead Rising, or if you wanted to play the game only to kill zombies and try out new weapons you haven't had a chance to in your previous saves. It simply keeps you from recieving any "main" missions, that if left undone, will give you a game over. Though, you will still recieve calls from Otis to do the side missions, you can ignore them, because you have the whole game time to yourself. Before starting this mode, I would recomend you have the 'Knee Drop' skill, because it helps to kill lots of zombies, when you see them crowded around on the ground. Other skills I recomend having are the 'Double Lariat,' and atleast the 'Air Kick.' Of course, the easiest way to achieve this mode is by being lvl 50, but techinically, it's not impossible to achieve it at lvl 1. ======================== 3.0 - Pro's of Mission Free Mode ======================== Now, you may ask, "Why the heck would I want to try this?" Because: - With this mode, you have 3 full days (in game time) to do ANYTHING you want, without having to worry about the time. - You won't have to do any of the main missions. - With this mode, you will automatically get the B-rank ending, even if you don't do the main missions. - You can easily unlock the "zombie genocide" achievment, since you don't have to worry about running to do missions, and get the 'Real Mega Blaster.' - You won't have to worry about the soldiers entering the mall. - You won't have to worry about ****spoilers**** doing the bomb mission, saving Isabella, the Doctor, Brad, or defeating Carlitto. - There will be no helicopter in the park. - You can save all the survivors, without having to spend your time doing any of the main missions. - You will not have to face the grocery store clerk. - Jessie will be alive during the end (Yay!). - You get to brag to your friends that you know how to play the game without doing any missions (unless they find this guide too :P). ======================== 4.0 - Cons of Mission Free Mode ======================== Now, you may ask, "Why the heck wouldn't I want to try this?" Because: - You won't be able to do any of the main missions of the story. - You will never get to see the soldiers storming the mall, unless you have already finished the game once already. - It will take a few tries to achieve this mode, without dying. - It is VERY tought to achieve at a low level (1-15). - No matter what you do, you can never achieve anything above or below a B-rank ending, meaning you will never get the "ture" ending, overtime mode, or infinity mode (unless you already did). - The shutter door to the Entrance Plaza will not be open, so you will have to go through the park entrance to get in. - You won't have to get any medicine for Brad, since he never gets shot. - Otis also lives during the end (Booooo!) :( - Otis never takes you out for a drink. (The one time he forgets to ever call you). ======================== 5.0 - How to achieve Mission Free Mode ======================== Now, the part you have all been waiting for...How to achieve Mission Free Mode! As stated earlier, I would suggest you start off with a high level when doing this, because it will make it so much easier to achieve. When you start playing the game (after you jump out of the helicopter and the cutscene with lady letting the zombies enter is over), you will have full control of Frank once again. As soon as you have control, run towards the pile of benches, trash bins, and weapons (the one you walk to to activate the cutscene that let the zombies into the mall), and pick up as one item slot weapons that you can. Next, try to retrieve as many weapons you can from the dead 'survivors' you met in the begining of the game. Now, your goal is to try and achieve 600+ zombie kills. The reason why 600+ kills is important, is because I have found that this is one of the ways you can later trigger the "Queen Insect" cutscene in the warehouse. I have tried 500 and less kills, but they will not work. You MUST have atleast 600 kills. Once you do, either run up the stairs to the storage room, or let the zombies drain your health (in which Otis will come and rescue you). Now, you will find yourself in the storage room. Walk up to the air vent, and try to enter (Otis will give you the radio and map first). Once you are outside once again, quickly run towards the door that leads to the warehouse entrance. I haven't tried to see if this also works if you take the elevator, but to be safe, just enter through the door. After you're in the warehouse, drop down from the shelves and walk towards the exit door that leads to the mall. At this point of the game, you will notice that you didn't get the cutscene, where Jessie asks you to find Brad. Instead, you will get the 'Queen Insect' cutsene, which isn't supposed to play until later in the game. Since you get the 'Queen Insect' cutscene, instead of the normal Jessie scene, you will not have the first main mission activated. Because you never started the first mission, you won't have any other main missions from now on either. From now on, you're free to enter the mall and do what you please. The game will never give you the "Save Brad" cutscene for the rest of the game, and you will never meet Carlito or Isabella. You will still get calls from Otis to do side missions, but you can ignore his calls (yay!), and him for the rest of the game. The rest of the game is up to you and your imagination from here on out for the next 3 days. :) If you haven't recieved the 'zombie genocide' achievment, here's your chance. Just go towards the parking garage lot, take the corvette, drive it into the garage, take a left in the garage while running over zombies, then keep going staight until you hit a dead end (and a huge crowd of zombies), and then take the transport van (the one with the lights on), drive it back outside, and then back in. After you do this, drive back to the dead end to see another van respawn. Hop in that one and keep doing this back an forth. You will have 54,000+ kills in about an hour in real time. ======================== 6.0 - Tips for achieving this mode ======================== - If you have the Mega blaster already unlocked, use it, because it is a big help. - If you're low level, I would suggest doing this if you manage to find 2 handguns in the 2 trash bins. With both guns, you will have 60 bullets, so try and use each bullet for head shots only. - The small advert sign in the middle of the plaza (where the advert for the watch is) is a big life saver (literally). Zombies cannot reach you from up here, so if you want to use the gun or buster, climb up here and do head shots. - Waiting on the advert sign is also helpful if you want to do the knee drop. Just position yourself to jump on a large crowd, and then perform the drop. You may kill anywhere from 1-8 zombies at a time, saving your weapons and also time. - When you see zombies crowded together, try to jump on their shoulders (if you have the 'Zombie Ride' skill). As soon as you're on their shoulders, jump straight up and then perform the knee drop to instantly kill the zombie and any near them. - Perform the knee drop at the center of a crown of zombies that are on the ground eating a survivor. You will be able to kill lots. - Save the baseball bat for the large crowds. - Make use of the bench, by throwing it. You can bring it up with you on the watch advert, and wait for all the zombie to crowd around you, until you throw it at them. - Save your snacks until you're very low on health. Also, try collecting them all too, before you start doing lots of kills. - Don't leave the area by going up the stairs, unless you have 600+ kills. - Try to get the shotgun by the fallen survivor at the right side of the fountain (he will have a crowd of zombies over him, so use a bench or the knee drop). - When trying to unlock the 'zombie genocide,'and you're in the underground garage, try to run over as many zombies with oxygen tanks that you can find. The will clear out a lot of zombies, and will give you the kill count for all it took out. - Go into the butcher shop in the garage, if you're low on health, in the underground garage, and grab the milk bottles off the counter. - Try and do the "Out of Order" mission, if you want a good weapon. You will unlock a chainsaw that will respawn everytime you go back to the wonderland ride. You can triple book the chainsaw, which will make the weapon last for the most of the rest of the game. ======================== 7.0 - What to do in this mode ======================== Now that you have the 3 days to yourself, you might want to go exploring, and try on new clothes, new weapons, walk past survivors and laugh at them, and so on. I would recomend doing the zombie genocide, since you have so much free time. You can also rescue every survivor, since you no longer have to spend that time on the main missions. Best of all, you can laugh at Otis, each time he calls you, and hang up on him. How rude of you! ;P ======================== 8.0 - Glitches ======================== Aside from the main story from never occuring, there are still lots of cool glitches that occure because of this mode. One I've experienced is if you activate the "cut from the same cloth" mission, you can walk out on him when he asks you to take his photo, and he will never die (as what usually happens when you walk out on a survivor). I activated his mission, walked towards the parking garage to get the zombie genocide achiement, came back 3 days later and he was still alive. If he see's you, though, after you leave him for a long time, and walk back into Paradise Plaza, you will get the bad cutscene, where he says the time ran out and you didn't take a good picture of him. Other glitches include: - Otis calls you less (Wahoooooo!) - No army people appear on the third day. - Jessie will always be sitting on her chair, staring at the monitor. - The cutscene involving your first meeting with Brad at the food court will never occur. - No matter where you are in the mall, after three days is up, you will still get the B ending. - If you rescue survivors, they will not show in the ending, but they will be saved, and never taken by the army people; meaning they will still be there on the third day. - Since the helicopter usually replaces the convicts on the third day, there will be no convicts OR helicopter in the park. - (More to come...start submitting your glitches!) ======================== 9.0 - About me ======================== I originally bought the 360 to play Oblivion, but then I bought the PC version instead, and bought Dead Rising for it. I've written other guides on GameFAQs under the username "DJMessiah12," before I closed my account. I came back, just to write this guide. So far, I have unlocked the second hardest achievment in the game (zombie genocide), and am working on the 7-day survivor achievment. I hate Otis with a passion, and am hoping he turns into a zombie in Dead Rising 2, so that he can no longer use that darn tranciever radio. Anything else you want to know about me and my experiences in Dead Rising, just ask. (Nothing too personal though) ======================== 9.1 - FAQs ======================== Q: How did you find out about this mode? A: Through accident. I just wanted to see how many zombies I could kill in the begining, before playing the game again. Q: Can I achieve this mode at lvl 1? A: Yes, but it will be very hard. You will definetly run out of weapons before you can make 600 kills, so make use of the hunk of meat laying around after you kill the zombies. Q: Where is the 'watch advert' that you are talking about? A: It's the one right before the fountain. It has plants on each side of it, and it's near the pile of weapons you stand near, when the zombie invasion cutscene is over. Q: I killed 54,000+ zombies, but I didn't get the Zombie Genocide achievment. A: You have to finish the game too, after unlocking it. Q: Can I just kill 300 zombies and go up the stairs and kill the rest in the mall? A: Yes, but you won't unlock this mode, unless you kill 600 in the begining. Q: Why does the 'Queen Insect' cutscene show instead of Jessie's? A: My guess is that the game was made so that you get the 'queen insect' cutscene after you kill so many zombies, so you can see what is causing them to be infected. Other than that, I think it's a bug (pun intended). Q: Where can I contact you? A: Just email me at DJ_Masseeh(at)yahoo.com. I took the "@" out of the email to avoid spam. I will check my email as much as I can, so please forgive me if I do not make a timely reply. Q: I have found a new glitch! A: This isn't really a question, but email me any glitches you find using this mode, and I'll add it to this guide, as well as give credit to you. Q: Will this mode appear as a selectable mode after I finish this game? A: Nope. This mode isn't really like the other modes. It's not and official mode in the game, but rather a glitch. Q: If you were stuck in a mall infested with Zombies, and could only use one weapon, what would it be? A: If the weapon would last forever, it would be the boomerang. I find it very useful in clearing out lots of zombies infront of you. ======================== 10.0 - Updates ======================== None yet.
