I am an ex-gametester (Broderbund Software, LucasArts Games, Point Of View Computing) and an ex-arcade attendant (Namco Cyberstation - Pier 39, San Francisco, CA). I also own multiple systems such as the Sega Dreamcast, Super Nintendo, Nintendo 64, Atari Jaguar, PlayStation (1, 2, 3, and 4), Xbox, and Xbox 360. I started writing guides in 2003 because I felt it was something I could do utilizing my writing skills gained in college and gametesting along with my passion for vidgames. Over time I have honed my overall writing and organization skills plus my creative thinking skills. Additionally, I have extended the play value of the games I have written guides and FAQs for many times over plus I have received many letters from all over the world. I am also a member of the following forums: >>GameFAQs >>GamesX >>AtariAge >>Digital Press >>GTA Forums >>The MoFaT (a members only message board set up by "Grand Theft Auto: Vice City" players who met on the Vice City message boards at GameFAQs). Outside of gaming, my interests include "Godzilla" (I have been a G-Fan since the age of ten) and "Red Dwarf". I am also a long time soundtrack collector with many titles in my possession. As far as favorite sports teams go, my teams are the San Antonio Spurs (NBA) [the local team], the Denver Broncos (NFL) [although I live in Texas, I am originally from Colorado Springs, Colorado] and the Air Force Falcons (NCAA Football). If this is the first time you have visited then you will find a lot of useful information in a highly organized format. Quotes taken from readers' e-mail are presented "as is" and may include spelling and grammatical errors. The main emphasis of this guide is to map out where the enemies are, point out where the collectibles are (and how to unlock gates), where (and how) to acquire certain Achievements/Trophies, and get the most out of this game. This guide also serves as an introduction to the "Watchmen" experience for those who have not read the book or seen the movie version. Information that can be considered spoilers are placed at the end of this guide. I have worked hard to make sure that this guide is as complete as possible but at the same time leave room for exploration. I hope that you enjoy this guide as much as learn from it. <0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+<<##0##>>+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0> During the course of both games there will be mention of certain people, places, and incidents in the "Watchmen" universe. Later, in the summer of 2009, these two games were packaged on their own disc for those who did not have the ability to download them onto their consoles. At their core these games are nothing more than brawlers utilizing two characters from the book, Rorschach and Nite Owl. These two crime-fighters formed their own team dynamic in the sixties and seventies and these games take place during this partnership. Although the game has some pretty graphics it doesn't have much in the gameplay department which is the major criticism these games have received. However, I do like the fact that the two actors who played Rorschach and Nite Owl, Jackie Earle Haley (a fellow San Antonian) and Patrick Wilson, reprised their roles for the game lending added authenticity. The major reason to pick up this title is that it delves a little into some side areas of the "Watchmen" universe. Speaking of which..... /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN3. Watchmen | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ In this chapter I briefly go over the book, universe, story, and movie. 0====================0 | The "Watchmen" Book \ 0=======================================================> "Watchmen", written by Alan Moore and illustrated by Dave Gibbons, was published as a 12-part comic book mini-series in 1986-1987 by DC Comics (and later re-published as a graphic novel). The book was meant as a deconstruction of superhero mythology using a specific visual layout and heavy use of symbolism. Reaction to the book was overwhelming and is considered to be one of the finest works of fiction ever produced. It also changed perceptions of what a comic book can be. It is the only graphic novel on the list of Time Magazine's 100 best english-language novels list. Rorschach, one of the characters you control in the game, is considered one of the most popular comic book characters of all time. He is number sixteen on Empire Magazine's and number six on Wizard Magazine's greatest comic book character lists. 0========================0 | The "Watchmen" Universe \ 0=======================================================> "Watchmen" takes place in an alternate version of American history. In the late thirties there were men and women who donned costumes and helped fight crime as "masked vigilantes" or "masks". They went by the names of Nite Owl, Silk Spectre, The Comedian, Mothman, Dollar Bill, and others. They would then form a group that would be known as the Minutemen. This group of heroes went after similar costumed criminals and became real popular with the public. However, after some time, the public grew disinterested and the criminals went on to other forms of crime. This would force the Minutemen to disband. But the Minutemen were around long enough to inspire a new generation of masks. And thus the Crimebusters was born (it should be noted that this group were never called the Watchmen in the book - only in the movie were they called the Watchmen). This new group had members with names like Silk Spectre II (daughter of the first Silk Spectre), Nite Owl II, Ozymandias, Rorschach, and Captain Metropolis. The Comedian, from the original Minutemen, also joined the group. Up until the sixties these crime-fighters were really just normal men and women who were stronger and smarter and used these abilities to help fight crime. Then came Doctor Manhattan. Doctor Manhattan was once Jon Osterman, a scientist. Unfortunately he got caught in a powerful science experiment and was disintegrated. However, he managed to reform himself as a powerful being of blue quantum energy and became the only person of the Crimebusters to have any actual super powers. After President Nixon took office in the late sixties he convinced Doctor Manhattan to go help The Comedian who was in Vietnam to help with the war effort. As a result, America won the Vietnam War. Later, President Nixon would get the 22nd Amendment (two-term limit for Presidents) repealed so he could run for as many terms as he wanted. By the seventies, public perception of masks was growing increasingly hostile. In 1977, the Crimebusters attempted to help quell public disturbances caused by a huge police strike. But this only made matters worse. During this time, Congress passed the Keene Act which outlawed all masked vigilantism unless supported by the US government. This left only The Comedian and Doctor Manhattan to operate. All of the other Crimebusters were forced to retire. However, Rorschach refused to retire and continued his crime fighting activities thus becoming an outlaw himself. 0=====================0 | The "Watchmen" Story \ 0=======================================================> The actual story starts in October, 1985. President Nixon is still in the White House. Global tensions are at an all-time high. And the New York Police begin investigation of someone who was thrown from a high-rise and fell to his death. After the Police leave, Rorschach uses a grappling gun to enter through the broken window. After some examination of the apartment, he discovers that the dead man was Edward Blake, otherwise known as The Comedian, one of the Crimebusters who helped to win the Vietnam War. And thus Rorschach begins an investigation of his own. One that has serious repercussions for the other surviving but retired crime-fighters. And for the world itself. 0=====================0 | The "Watchmen" Movie \ 0=======================================================> Not surprisingly, the success of the book caught the attention of Hollywood who wanted to do their own interpretation of the title. They began trying to make a movie of the book almost as soon as it was finished in 1987. Unfortunately, the book would end up in what is known as "development hell" where it would go through many writers, directors, and actors. It would also sit unused somewhere for some period of time. Finally, in 2007, Zach Snyder, who was fresh off of the enormous success of "300", also based off a graphic novel, managed to finally start filming of the "Watchmen" movie. He made every effort to remain faithful to the book while making some changes of his own to help make the story fit the medium. During the summer and fall of 2008 the trailers were released and caused a frenzy amongst fans and made others who never read the book, like myself, pick it up and start reading. The film was finally released on March 6, 2009. It took in $57 million on its opening weekend, which was good, but not as good as the $70 million plus that "300", Zach's previous film, did on its opening weekend. Worse, the film did a quick fade as time went on. The complex narrative of the film turned some people away and there was controversy over the nudity of Doctor Manhattan. By the time the film left theaters it barely made over $100 million in the US and just a little over $184 million worldwide. Considering that the film cost somewhere around $130 million to make this was a major disappointment. In addition, there are two additional versions of the film, including the Ultimate Cut, that are available to fans of the movie on both DVD and Blu-Ray that contain scenes that could not be included with the Theatrical Cut. Although the movie had a disappointing theatrical run it has found some degree of success on home video and has become more appreciated over time. Now let's go back to the games themselves starting with..... /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN4. Technical Information | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ In this chapter I go over certain technical aspects of the game between the three consoles it was released on: >>Xbox 360 ******** The two games were initially released as download only but were later sold as a stand alone disc. Although you can install the games to the hard drive it will still play off the disc regardless thus making installation useless. There is also a slight bug regarding the camera. In the Options there is a setting for the Vertical Camera where you can invert it. If you invert it then leave the game and reload it then the camera will be reverted back to its original setting even though it still says inverted in the Options. You have to set it back to Normal then to Inverted. You have to do this with each game session. >>PlayStation 3 ************* Just like with the Xbox 360 version the DLC versions of the games were later sold as a stand alone disc. However, at least in the United States, it was sold as part of what was known as The Complete Experience. The game came included with The Director's Cut of the movie plus some other stuff. The game disc itself came with some special features that can only be played through the PS3's movie playback. >>PC ** In the United States the game is sold as DLC only, mainly through Steam. Outside the US it can be obtained either as DLC or on disc. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN5. In the center of your screen is your main character, either Rorschach or Nite Owl. You use your Left Analog Stick to move him around and the Right Analog Stick to rotate and manipulate the camera. In the lower left corner of the Main Screen is where your Health Meter is located. When you are hit then this meter is reduced. If your Health Meter is getting close to zero then the camera will skew to the side indicating that you are near death. However, over time, the Health Meter will regenerate. So it is best to run away from combat when your Health Meter is getting low and let it recover. Just below the Health Meter is the Special Ability meter. For Rorschach it is the Rage Meter and for Nite Owl it is the Charge Meter. Rorschach will be on the left side of the screen and Nite Owl will be on the right regardless of who's controlling which. If either character is defeated then it is treated the same as if you were defeated in single player which means that you will reload from the previous save point. But there are some important things to note. For some reason whatever power-ups you gained from playing Nite Owl in single player will *NOT* carry over to Co-Op even though Rorschach's will. In addition, whatever power-ups you get while playing Nite Owl in Co-Op will *NOT* carry over to single player. As a precaution it may be best to get all Accomplishments, especially for Nite Owl, before tackling this mode. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN10. Enemies and Weapons | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ During the course of each game you will encounter a number of different enemies. Each chapter in each game has a different enemy type and they get progressively harder as you proceed. There are two types of enemies: Normal and Heavy. A Normal enemy is about the same body type as our heroes. A Heavy enemy is much larger and will take more hits to bring down. A Heavy enemy is also much stronger but they are slower allowing you to dodge or block their incoming attacks. Many of them also carry weapons which makes them more dangerous. They should be dealt with first whenever possible, especially when they surround you which they do often. They carry everything from glass bottles to large metal clubs. The larger the weapon, the more damage it can do to you. Counter Attacking or knocking them down will disarm them. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN11. Attacks, Defense, and Combos | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ Listed in this chapter are basic and advanced attacks plus moves. >>Basic Attacks and Defense ************************* Fast Attacks are quick attacks that don't do a lot of damage but can be used to set up combos and counter attacks. Heavy Attacks are more powerful but slower and can be easily guarded. In addition, you are also vulnerable to being grabbed and hit by an enemy. Dodge/Block allows you to defend and set up counter attacks. >>Counter Attack ************** You can counter an attack or disarm an enemy after blocking or dodging. To do a counter attack you press the Fast Attack button after doing a block/dodge. >>Throws ****** Another move you can do is to throw enemies. To throw them approach one then use the Throw button. However, if an enemy is blocking, then you cannot throw him/her. >>Finishing Moves *************** After you do a certain amount of damage to an enemy then you may find one of four button icons appear above his/her head: --Throw --Fast Attack --Heavy Attack --Block/Dodge If you press the corresponding button then you will perform a Finishing Move. This is a brutal move that will take down an enemy instantly. You can also perform Finishing Moves when an enemy is on the ground and you are kicking him/her. Performing Finishing Moves will rapidly fill up your special ability meter allowing you to use your special abilities to the fullest. In addition, you cannot be attacked while doing a Finishing Move. >>Combo and Power-Up Tokens ************************* In Part One you must find the Combo and Power-Up Tokens before you can use a particular combo or power-up. These combos and power-ups are permanently added to your character abilities and will allow you to use them in previous chapters played. For Part Two this is unnecessary since all combos and power-ups are available from the beginning. >>Combos ****** Here, I will list the combos for Rorschach and Nite Owl. There are eight combos for each character. The combos are done using the Fast (F) and Heavy (H) Attack buttons. To perform a combo you must press each attack button right at the time of the previous attack. If you manage to do the second move correctly then you will see the button icons appear on the screen. When you complete a combo then stop pressing the buttons. This will finish the combo and it will then be performed (it should be noted that you can be interrupted while performing a combo). Completing combos will also rapidly fill up your special ability meter which will allow you to make the most of your special abilities. The more powerful the combo, the more it fills up. It takes a little time to get the hang of the timing but once you do then you can really tear through both games utilizing your combos: 0==================================================================0 | Combo | Rorschach | Nite Owl | |==================================================================| | Knock Down | H + H + H | H + H + H | |------------------+-------------------------+---------------------| | Fast Knock Down | H + F + H | H + F + H | |------------------+-------------------------+---------------------| | Stun | F + F + F + F | F + H + F | |------------------+-------------------------+---------------------| | Fast Stun | F + H + F | F + F + F | |------------------+-------------------------+---------------------| | Area Attack | H + F + F + H | F + H + H | |------------------+-------------------------+---------------------| | Fast Area Attack | F + H + H | F + H | |------------------+-------------------------+---------------------| | Extra Damage | H + H + F + F + H | H + F + F + H | |------------------+-------------------------+---------------------| | Maximum Damage | H + H + F + F + F + H | H + H + F + F + H | 0==================================================================0 >>Combo Chaining ************** Another thing to know about combos is that you can chain them to make a long powerful super combo that can take down enemies quickly. In addition, the last move of one combo can be the first move of the next combo. An example: Let's say you are Rorschach and you are facing a large enemy. Let's start with Fast Stun Combo: F + H + F As it is being performed let's input the moves of the next combo - Fast Area Attack: H + H Note that I only input the last two moves of that combo instead of the entire combo. You see, as you input those two moves the button icons will shift to the left. After you finish with those inputs then you should have the Fast Area Attack Combo completed using the last move from the first combo so it should look like this: F + H + H As that combo is being performed then I input the moves for the next combo - Maximum Damage: F + F + F + H Note that I only input the last four moves instead of the entire combo. I complete this combo using the last two moves from the previous combo so now I have the entire Maximum Damage Combo: H + H + F + F + F + H This long combo chain finally takes down my large enemy. And this is what the long combo chain looks like when completed: F + H + (F) + (H) + (H) + F + F + F + H The moves in parenthesis are the moves that "couple" the combos in the chain. Once you know how to chain combos then you can really kick some serious ass. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN12. Rorschach |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\ 0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=0=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0 >>Background ********** Rorschach's real name is Walter Kovacs. He was born into a abusive single parent environment with his mother. His mother was a prostitute and was resentful and cruel towards young Walter. At the age of ten he viciously attacked a couple of boys which led to the investigation of his home. When the state found out about his mother they took him away from her and put him into a home for problem children. When he became of age he left the home and took a job in the garment industry. During this time he encountered a dress made of a special material that he happened to admire but the intended recipient, Kitty Genovese, didn't like. So he kept it. When Kitty was murdered then he made masks out of the dress and became Rorschach. >>Fighting Style ************** Rorschach's fighting style is brutal and vicious. His goal is to inflict as much damage as possible on his enemy. This is especially apparent with his finishing moves. In addition, Rorschach can use weapons that are either laying around or grabbed from enemies. This makes him even more dangerous, especially if he gets is hands on big weapons. The weapons he uses will break after a few hits. However, the weapon won't degrade when used during a Counter Attack or Finishing Move. So the weapon will last longer when you do a bunch of Finishing or Counter Attack moves close together. Rorschach doesn't block but he can efficiently dodge attacks and get out of the way. He can also roll around on the ground to avoid other attacks. This gives him additional speed that his partner doesn't have. One other thing about his dodging ability. When you are near an enemy and you dodge around an enemy then you can, somehow, stun him/her. This can be useful to set up an attack or allow your partner to perform his own attack on the enemy. >>Rage Gauge, Bull Rush, and Rage Mode ************************************ Beneath Rorschach's Health Meter is his Rage Meter. To fill it up you must attack enemies. Each time you hit an enemy then it fills up a little. Each time you get hit it will also fill up a little. To fill it up faster then you must perform Finishing Moves and powerful combos. The more powerful the combo, the faster the meter fills up. When you have some Rage then you can perform the Bull Rush move using the Special Ability #1 button. This move makes Rorschach rapidly charge forward, head first, into an enemy or a large group of enemies. This causes considerable damage to a group of enemies and can take down a single weak enemy with one hit. When the Rage Meter is flashing then you can activate Rage Mode with the Special Ability #2 button. This allows Rorschach to channel his rage into a blind fury which makes him faster and more powerful for a short time. When he is in Rage Mode then the Rage Meter will start to decrease. Performing combos and Finishing Moves will keep the Rage Mode going. When the Rage Meter empties then the Rage Mode ends. In addition, if you have any Rage and you stop fighting then it will start to go down after awhile as Rorschach calms down. It should be noted that in Part One you must find the Bull Rush and Rage Mode Tokens before you can use them. >>Rorschach Cards *************** You can permanently increase the amount of rage you can store for your Rage Meter by finding the Rorschach Cards hidden throughout both games (ten for Part One, six for Part Two). This permanent increase of rage can be used in previous chapters played. Some of these are easily found but most of them are behind locked gates which leads to..... >>Lockpicking *********** Another Rorschach ability is to lockpick gates. To pick a lock just go up to a locked gate and press the Use button. One *HIGHLY* recommended suggestion is, prior to doing any lockpicking, to go into your control settings and switch the Bull Rush button to the *LEFT* side of your joypad. I'll explain why in a little bit. When you start lockpicking then you will see several spring loaded tumblers. To open the lock you must set (dislodge) all of the tumblers in the up position. There are three parts of note here: First is the *CYLINDER* where all of the tumblers have settled into. The second is the *BOTTOM* part (the brass part) of the tumbler which can be of various lengths. The third is the *TOP* part (the silver part - where it is connected to the spring) of the tumbler which is always the same length. In order to set (dislodge) the tumbler you must use the Left Analog Stick to move the lockpick left or right to place it under a tumbler. Then use the Right Analog Stick to push the lockpick up to move up the tumbler. Then, when the bottom of the *TOP* part of the tumbler is in line with the top of the *CYLINDER*, press Bull Rush to set the tumbler (you should also see the Bull Rush button icon flashing on the right side of the screen when you have it in the correct position). If you do this correctly then you should see the top part of the tumbler dislodge and set. One annoying thing about lockpicking is that Bull Rush is usually on the right side of the joypad. Sometimes, if you have a tumbler where you want it then try to set it by using your right index finger you may find your right thumb shifting as you are squeezing which may cause the tumbler to move out of position. So, when you press Bull Rush, this may cause all of the tumblers you have set to come back down and you will have to start over. This is why it is recommended you switch Bull Rush to the left side for at least the lockpicking segment. Another annoying thing about lockpicking is the strict use of the Right Analog Stick when pushing up. This becomes apparent when you are dealing with a tumbler with a very short bottom piece. If you don't push it straight up, and I do mean straight up, you may find that the lock pick won't go all the way up to set the tumbler. If you push up but with even the slightest angle, left or right, it won't go all the way up. When you have successfully set all of the tumblers up then the lock will open. Because of the various lengths of the bottom parts of the tumblers you will have to find the best order to set the tumblers to open the door. In some cases you can set more than one tumbler at once. If you mess up then you can bring all of the tumblers back down by pressing the Bull Rush button so you can start over. >>Climbing ******** Another Rorschach ability is to climb pipes. When you find a pipe then you can climb it up or down by pressing the Use button. 0+=+=+=+=+=+=+0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0 | B. Nite Owl |~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~\ 0+=+=+=+=+=+=+0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0 >>Background ********** Nite Owl's real name is Dan Dreiberg. Inspired by the exploits of the original Nite Owl, Dan contacted Hollis Mason, the first Nite Owl, and asked if he could carry on the name. Hollis agreed and thus Dan became Nite Owl II. Using a large inheritance and fantastic technical knowhow Dan built all kinds of gadgets, including his own aircraft, nicknamed the Owl Ship, to help fight crime. He wears a suit, called the OwlSuit, that contains special compact electrical generators that allow him to charge up his suit and make him more powerful. His suit also makes him stronger thus allowing him to lift heavy objects such as large gates. >>Fighting Style ************** Nite Owl's fighting style is a mixture of martial arts skills. His goal is to incapacitate his enemies quickly without doing serious damage to them. Nite Owl, like Rorschach, can disarm his opponents but he won't use any weapons he takes - he will just drop it. In addition, Nite Owl doesn't dodge unlike his partner Rorschach. He will block incoming attacks instead. The fact that he stands still instead of dodging will make it easier for enemies to attack him from behind. When you get the Electrify OwlSuit upgrade then you will gain the ability to electrify your blocks which will damage the enemy a little when you successfully block an attack. However, this subtracts from your Charge Meter which may make it more difficult to use your special abilities. Also, Nite Owl is slower than Rorschach which may make it hard to run away from a group of fast enemies. >>Charge Gauge, Grenades, and Electrify OwlSuit ********************************************* Beneath Nite Owl's Health Meter is his Charge Meter. The Charge Meter will start to fill up on its own when you start a chapter. However, it will take awhile to let it fill completely this way (especially after you find some OwlSuit Batteries). To fill it up faster then you must perform Finishing Moves and powerful combos. The more powerful the combo, the faster the gauge fills up. When you have some Charge then you can use the Grenade by pressing the Special Ability #1 button. This will stun nearby enemies for a short time to allow you to perform other moves on them. When the Charge Meter is flashing then you can activate Electrify OwlSuit with the Special Ability #2 button. This will emit a powerful electrical blast which will damage and stun nearby enemies. In addition, this will temporarily electrify the OwlSuit which will make you more powerful for a short time. During this time you will see a blue bar in your Charge Meter. This is how long the OwlSuit is electrified. When the blue bar disappears then the OwlSuit is no longer electrified. It should be noted that in Part One you must find the Grenade and Electrify OwlSuit Tokens before you can use them. >>OwlSuit Batteries ***************** You can permanently increase the amount of charge you can store for your Charge Meter by finding the OwlSuit Batteries hidden throughout both games (ten for Part One, six for Part Two). This permanent increase of charge can be used in previous chapters played. >>Grappling ********* Another Nite Owl ability is to grapple up buildings using your Grappling Gun. You must find a Grapple Point before going up or down. To make things easier you will see large red and white Way Up or Way Down signs near a Grapple Point. To grapple up, rotate the camera until you see a Grapple Point and press the Use button. You can also grapple down by being near a Grapple Point and pressing the Use button. >>Lifting ******* Another Nite Owl ability is to lift large gates (because of his increased strength) for Rorschach to climb under. When you find a Lift Gate then you can lift it by rapidly pressing the Use button. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN13. Basic Strategies | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ Listed in this chapter are some basic strategies to use: >>Counter Attacking ***************** When surrounded by enemies then just keep repeating the Counter Attack move. When any of them try to do anything then you will automatically perform the move on them. This will also disarm them, damage them, and keep them from doing much harm to you. >>Throwing Their Weight Around **************************** Throwing enemies around is also a good way to damage them. Especially if you throw them into each other. Throwing them over railings, into water, and into fire is also a good way to dispatch them quickly. If you throw them to the ground then it will make it easier to get rid of them since all you need to do is to just kick them into submission while they are down. >>Indestructible Partner ********************** In single player your partner is indestructible. He can take all of the damage in the world and he won't go down (but he'll complain a lot). Use this to your advantage when you get low on health and need to run away. He can also distract enemies so you can get them from behind and finish them yourself. >>Out of Sight ************ Another trick, useful for acquiring certain Achievements/Trophies and when you are low on health, is hiding from the enemy. If they can't see you, even if you think they know you are there, then they won't attack you and instead they will go after your partner. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >GEN14. Accomplishments | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ For each game I will list all of the Accomplishments that can be acquired for the Xbox 360 and PS3 versions of "Watchmen: The End is Nigh (Parts 1 and 2)". Now, for the sake of terminology and to lessen confusion within this guide, Accomplishments are what are known as Achievements on the Xbox 360 version and Trophies on the PS3 version. To those who do not know, Achievements and Trophies can be considered a different kind of scoring system. Each Xbox 360 game has 1000 Achievement Points that can be obtained. However, the PS3 Trophies do not have a point system attached to them although the numbers of Trophies attained can be considered a way of keeping score (as well as add some kind of experience points in the PlayStation Network system). In addition, the Trophies are split into Bronze, Silver, Gold, and Platinum classes. The Achievement system was built into the Xbox 360 from the start, something that was not done for the PS3 but the Trophy system was added with a system update. Some Accomplishments can be acquired by simply playing through the game. Others can be obtained by doing certain objectives outside of normal gameplay. To many gamers this adds to the replay value of each game and gives them bragging rights on Xbox Live or PlayStation Network where these scores are posted. Most of the Accomplishments within these games are easy to get. Some require more work. And now, for the first game..... /==++====++==\ /==++====++==\ /==++====++====++====++====++====<<##0##>>====++====++====++====++====++==\ | >WCH2. The story starts on October 13, 1972. Dan (Nite Owl) is currently tinkering with Archie, the Owl Ship, as Rorschach is reading the newspaper nearby. The headlines tell of President Nixon's lead in the election standings and of a FBI Associate Director who has been missing for six days. Dan talks of going to Columbia University to hear two former Washington Post reporters, Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein, talk of some stunning information concerning the Watergate Hotel break-in the previous June. But Rorschach thinks little of the two reporters. Suddenly, the conversation is interrupted by a police bulletin coming over the radio. A power blackout has started a riot at Sing Sing Prison. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Bronze. >>Teamwork ******** Description: Complete the game in co-op mode. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 36 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Gold. Notes: Although this is meant for two players you can do this one as a single player. You will need two controllers for this though. It is best to use Rorschach as your main character and leave Nite Owl behind. Clear the way with Rorschach until you get to a Lift Gate then move Nite Owl to him while collecting Combos and Batteries. Once you get Rorschach past the Gate then stay put, switch back to Rorschach, and proceed forward until the next one. One disadvantage is that all of the enemies will focus on you instead of being split up between the duo. This is another reason to use Rorschach - he has excellent attacks, excellent dodging ability, and the Bull Rush attack to quickly weaken and defeat enemies. In instances where you can't get Nite Owl far away from enemies then do the Counter Attack move on both controllers repeatedly until the threat is gone. I will make notes about single player co-op at certain points during the guide. >>Thief ***** Description: Find all abilities and pickups in Rorschach mode. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 15 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Silver. >>Turbo ***** Description: Complete the game in less than 80 minutes in one session, without restarting from a checkpoint. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 11 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Bronze. Notes: This is best done on a second run-through after acquiring all of the abilities for either character. The best person for this task is Rorschach. He has the best combos, the ability to rapidly fill his Rage Meter by attacking, and speed. Use Bull Rush in large groups to quickly weaken enemies and do Finishing Moves when they present themselves, especially with Heavies. Mastering combos is also a plus since that will also allow you to dispatch enemies and fill up your Rage Meter more quickly. It should be pointed out that you won't get the Accomplishment until you see the end credits. >>Untouchable *********** Description: Go unharmed for an entire level, without restarting from a checkpoint. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 11 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Bronze. Notes: The best place to go for this one is Chapter I for reasons I will explain there. >>Vigilante ********* Description: Eliminate 20 bad guys in 101 seconds. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 8 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Bronze. Notes: You may get this one as a side benefit of going after the {Turbo} Accomplishment. I got this one in Chapter I while going for that Accomplishment. This is mainly due to the weak enemies that I was able to go through quickly thanks to the heavy use of combos and special abilities. He opens his trunk to find all sorts of cool weapons. But he also stumbles upon the bodies of Woodward and Bernstein who are stashed in the trunk. Nite Owl and Rorschach finally appear as Underboss is discovering the bodies of the reporters. The duo believe that Underboss has killed them even though Underboss pleads his innocence. The duo won't believe him and Underboss runs into the construction site. Here, at the construction site, you will finally face Underboss. He will then run up several floors and you have to chase him up the building. This fight is divided into several stages. >>Stage 1 ******* On the second floor Underboss will call some Henchmen to deal with you. These Henchmen are weak and can be easily disposed. Fight them off then proceed after him. You will encounter more Henchmen on the fourth and sixth floors including one large group of nine. While you are fighting that large group, Underboss will climb up to the seventh floor. >>Stage 2 ******* On the seventh floor you can now fight Underboss. He has a very long health bar which will appear at the top of the screen. It should be noted that if you lose the fight at any time you will have to restart here. In addition, when you finish the game and can replay the chapters you start off here when you replay Chapter VI. You can't do any damage to him from the back because of the equipment he is wearing. You have to attack him from the front. However, as Nite Owl, you can attack him from the back if you use the Electrify OwlSuit and charge yourself up. Your special attacks won't work on him but you can still use the Rage Mode and the Electrify OwlSuit. In addition, your partner *CANNOT* do any damage to him regardless. You must do all of the damage yourself. Every so often Underboss will counterattack by announcing "Incoming!" When he does that then dodge or block. Regardless of your character, hit him a couple of times with your Maximum Damage combos. This will make him run off to another part of the building. >>Stage 3 ******* When you get to the eighth floor then Underboss will call forth some more Henchmen. It is important to note that he has a nasty habit of coming up behind you as you are trying to deal with them. The best thing to do, starting at the ladder, is go right then right again at the metal beam and follow the way then turn right again at the next metal beam to put yourself at the other side of the floor. If you're quick enough then this should keep Underboss pinned on the other side and allow you to dispose of some of his minions. However, more Henchmen will continue to appear as long as Underboss has not been chased to the next area. But you should thin them out a little bit so you can approach him. As Nite Owl, Underboss has a very nasty habit of coming up behind you and constantly hitting you and forcing you to block constantly. Because of Nite Owl's slow speed it will make it difficult to get away or attack. Between swings try to make a quick combo to get him off you. As Rorschach, you will find that when you go to the other side of the floor Underboss will follow you. But most of the Henchmen will focus on Nite Owl and thin out enough on your end to get a good shot at Underboss. When you finally get a good shot at Underboss then hit him with a Maximum Damage combo. This should be enough to chase him off to the next area. Get rid of the remaining Henchmen so you can go to the next floor. >>Stage 4 ******* When you get to where Underboss is then you will be on the top floor of the building. He will also rip off a pole and use it as a weapon. This will make him even more dangerous. Regardless of your character, use your Maximum Damage combo twice on him to start the next stage of this battle. >>Stage 5 ******* When you reduce his health enough then he will jump to a platform made of pipes that is held by a crane. He will then use his flamethrower against you. It is best to stay on one end of the floor, which is the end with the ladder you came up on, so he can't reach you. At this point more Henchmen will appear. Your goal is to grab them and throw them at Underboss. If you are successful then you will get him to come off of it. Wait for Underboss to sweep his flamethrower away from you then go to the middle of this floor and throw a henchman toward him. A successful hit will force Underboss to jump off of the platform and back to the floor. Then continue to attack him to reduce his health. It should be noted at this point that he can quickly counterattack without warning. Using small combos will often result on you being knocked to the ground. When you reduce his health enough then he will jump back onto the platform and the pattern repeats. You need to get him to jump off the platform four times before you can finally defeat Underboss. The last time he jumps off, the platform will disintegrate. Now for some character specific notes: --Rorschach ========= At this stage your Maximum and Extra Damage Combos won't fully work. You can execute them but, before you can reach the end and get the maximum damage out of it, Underboss will hit you to break the combo. The best thing to do is, as you get near the end of the combo, dodge so he can't hit you. Then perform the combo again and repeat. When the pipe platform finally disintegrates then use the Rage Mode to make yourself more powerful and quickly finish Underboss off. --Nite Owl ======== At some point during this stage you may find that your Maximum Damage won't work. Underboss will hit you long before you can get started. Smaller combos won't work either. Use the Grenade to stun him long enough to get him with some good hits. However, I found on subsequent run-throughs, that he doesn't always try to kill your Maximum Damage combo. If you can continue to use the combo then use it. When the platform disintegrates then use the Electrify OwlSuit to charge yourself up and finish Underboss off quickly. --Single Player Co-Op =================== This is a little more difficult due to the Henchmen focusing their complete attention on you. Because of this you shouldn't try to make any combos when you are at the top of the building facing Underboss. Just chip away until you make him go back to his platform. When you destroy his platform then Nite Owl will be immediately transported to the top during the cutscene. Immediately initiate both Rage Mode and Electrify Owlsuit. Electrifying his suit will protect Nite Owl long enough so you can quickly finish off Underboss with Rorschach during his Rage. 0=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=0 / The End is Nigh: Part One \ 0=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+\ | >PTO7. Having two controllers will make Nite Owl stand still so you can beat him up. Do the combos against Nite Owl in this order, with a short pause between each group, for best success. H, H, F, F, F, H H, H, F, F, H F, H, H, H F, F, F, F H, F, F, H, F, H If by some chance you don't get this Accomplishment then bounce back to the Dashboard, reload the game, and try again. I got this on my first try while playing through the PS3 version. >>Focus Fire ********** Description: Take down 10 enemies in a row finishing off each of them before doing damage to anybody else. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 11 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Bronze. Notes: Although this can be done anywhere the best place to do this one is Chapter III for reasons I will explain there. >>Friends Forever? **************** Description: Complete the game in Co-operative mode. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 36 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Gold. Notes: Like in Part One you can also do this in single player. However, the inclusion of Two-Man Gates will make this task harder due to the fact that you can't get Nite Owl far away from enemies to protect him most times. So you will be doing a lot of Counter Attacking moves on both controllers to get rid of enemies. >>Gentleman ********* Description: Complete Chapter III without hitting any ladies before they hit you. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 8 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Bronze. Notes: I will explain how to acquire this one at the beginning of that chapter. >>Martial Artist ************** Description: Perform all 8 Nite Owl combos within 60 seconds. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 15 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Silver. Notes: You can use the Rorschach vs. Nite Owl mode to get this as well but Nite Owl is more powerful than Rorschach and can defeat him before you complete your combos if you do them wrong. This is the recommended order of combos to get this Accomplishment: H, H, F, F, H F, H, H, H F, F, F F, H, F H, F, H H, F, F, H As with the {Feral Fighter} Accomplishment if you don't get it then bounce back to the Dashboard, reload, and try again. >>Morally Superior **************** Description: Complete the game as Nite Owl. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 36 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Silver. >>Ping Pong ********* Description: Hit at least 4 different enemies while building up a combo. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 8 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Bronze. Notes: If you want this one then it is probably best to play as Rorschach since he has two long combos. I don't have any real strategy at this time to get this one since I managed to acquire it by accident. >>Rrarararghgh!!! (Xbox 360) Primal Scream (PlayStation 3) ***************************** Description: Sustain a single rage mode for 60 seconds. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 8 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Bronze. Notes: At this time the best place to get this one is in Chapter II and I will note where. >>Street Justice ************** Description: Complete the game as Rorschach. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 36 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Silver. >>Unending Combo ************** Description: String a single uninterrupted combo that's at least 10 hits long. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 8 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Bronze. Notes: Either do a long combo chain or a random combination of the Fast and Heavy Attack buttons against a Heavy enemy. You can also do this in Rorschach vs. Nite Owl mode. >>You Tag 'em - I Bag 'em *********************** Description: Eliminate 10 enemies that your partner has knocked down or thrown in your direction. Xbox 360 Accomplishment Points: 11 GS. PlayStation 3 Trophy Class: Bronze. Notes: This is misquoted in the Xbox 360 version which implies that you need to eliminate one enemy instead of ten. This is best done as Nite Owl as Rorschach's Bull Rush attack can knock down multiple enemies. Stay close to Rorschach as he is fighting and wait for somebody to drop. Then run over to him and try to kick him. If you can kick him then finish him off before Rorschach does. Continue this way until you get the Accomplishment. This is also where you can do two Accomplishments: **{Electric Explosion} Accomplishment *********************************** To do this Accomplishment it is best to have all six OwlSuit Batteries and do this on a second run-through. Run past the first group of Knot Tops and go to the next building to attract the second group. Then lure the second group near the first group then do the armor blast. If you do this right then you should hit enough of the Knot Tops to get the Accomplishment. **{Rrarararghgh!!! / Primal Scream} Accomplishment ************************************************ Although you can do this in single player this is best done in Co-Op. Whoever plays Nite Owl should stay way back from this area. Get Rorschach past the first group then lure the second group. Do the Counter Attack move to build up Rage and to damage the enemies. When you fill up your Rage Meter then activate Rage Mode and start doing a combination of attacks and Counter Attacks. The moment you can see an icon above someone's head then immediately perform the Finishing Move. Your Rage Meter does not go down during the animation and you can refill a nice chunk of the meter afterwards which will keep the Rage going. With proper management you can make his Rage last about three minutes which is more than enough to get this Accomplishment. After disposing of them then Rorschach will leave to open a door. This will split up the duo: ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- >>Rorschach Path ============== Climb up the pipe then climb back down to the other side. Then they are greeted by the smarmy doorman and attack him to make their entrance..... <0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+<<##0##>>+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0> Now for the {Gentleman} Accomplishment which is to let yourself be attacked by a Lady first before attacking her. You must do this to *ALL* Ladies you confront or choose to confront. The best character to use for this purpose is Rorschach because of his dodge ability and speed. Even so, this is a time consuming task because of the care you must take to get this Accomplishment. There are two ways to go about this: the easy way and the hard way. I'll go over the hard way first. The idea is to try to get into one-on-one confrontations with enemies. This will make it easier to thin out large groups and allow you to be attacked by a Lady before beating her up. Plus the more room you have then the easier it will be to set up confrontations and/or avoid attacks. I also found that if you get hit by a Lady first you *MUST* finish her off or you may not get the Accomplishment. Try to get as many enemies toward Nite Owl as you can then confront any enemy that breaks off and runs toward you. If more than one come toward you then run around and bring them back to Nite Owl. You don't want to face more than one enemy because it may make it harder to keep track of who you are attacking or you may end up hitting a Lady first if you try to attack another enemy. One annoying thing about this game is that sometimes, if you try to attack someone, is that you suddenly run to another enemy, one you had no plan to attack right away, and hit them. This can easily ruin any chance of acquiring this Accomplishment if you manage to hit a Lady first this way. To keep this to a minimum, measure your attacks especially if you are kicking someone who is down. It usually takes a long time for Nite Owl to finish off a group of enemies so here's a tip to speed things up. Go up to the enemy he is facing then do the dodge move on him/her. This will stun the enemy and Nite Owl will usually throw him/her so they can be kicked into submission by him. There is one side benefit in doing the {Gentleman} Accomplishment. In the process of setting up one-on-one confrontations you may also get the {Focus Fire} Accomplishment which is take down 10 enemies in a row finishing off each of them before doing damage to anybody else. There are several spots where things can get dicey and I will note them as I go along. Then there is the easy way. Ace Attorney 86 over at Xbox360Achievements.com found this method and it worked for me during my PS3 runthrough. When you reach a certain point near the end of the chapter then the game will auto save. After it saves then go back to the Dashboard and reload the game. What happens is that while the game will save certain stats it does not perma-save whether or not you hit any Ladies. If you hit any Ladies before you reached this point then you can clear this stat when you bounce out and reload. In short, you can play through the chapter any way you like then bounce out of the game near the end and reload to give you a clean slate for this Accomplishment. It is important to note that this only works on the initial playthrough of the chapter. If you beat the game, replay the chapter, bounce out and select the chapter again you will merely restart from the beginning. If you wish to take advantage of this trick then you will have to delete your game save. Considering how quickly you can go through the game this may not be much of an issue. It should be pointed out that you won't get the Accomplishment until you see the end credits. <0+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+<<##0##>>+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+0> 0======0 | Lobby \ 0===========================================================================> To start, you will be attacked by two Gimps, the Heavies in this chapter. Nite Owl, realizing that this is a lost cause, wants to leave but Rorschach refuses and wants to punish The Twilight Lady. After the cutscene then you will be in the center of this massive Central Room. There are three doors on each side. Two Gimps will be in front of the center door. Two doors on the right side of the room will burst open and three Gimps and one Lady will come to attack you. After you defeat them then two doors on the left side of the room will burst open and four Ladies and two Gimps will come to join the fray. --Single Player Co-Op =================== This area is difficult because of all the powerful Gimps. Quickly put Nite Owl in a corner which should limit the number of enemies attracted to him. Keep an eye on him while fighting off the enemies as Rorschach. The large number of Gimps can easily overwhelm either character thus forcing you back to the Atrium and re-fight Hallway #2 again to get back here again. When the cutscene ends then immediately get Nite Owl to the corner to the left of the door you just entered from. Here you will find a small round table. Wedge him between the table and the wal as much as you can. This will limit the number of enemies that will come to him. In addition, they will mostly stand nearby him for awhile before deciding to attack. This will give you time to clear out the rest of them with Rorschach. The moment any of the enemies decide to attack Nite Owl then quickly do Counter Attack moves on both controllers. After you clear out this group then you can keep Nite Owl here until you get Rorschach to the next Two-Man Gate. 0========0 | Library \ 0===========================================================================> Here you will be attacked by six Ladies. As long as you are out of sight of the enemies then they don't know you are there and they will focus on Nite Owl. Hopefully he can dispatch most, if not all, of them before you can go to the next area. --Single Player Co-Op =================== This is another hard area. When you start the fight you will see that your Rage and Charge Meters are at zero. The Twilight Lady is tough (indicated by her long health meter) and fast. She also has an electrocution rod and has a rapid fire kick combo. But she is also easier than Underboss who you faced in Part One. For starters, your partner can chip away at her health, something that you couldn't do with Underboss. In addition, you can primarily just spam the Counter Attack move which is pretty effective on her. Although, if you are good with your combos, you can speed things up and hit her with some small ones. If you have a sizable amount of Rage or Charge then you can use your special abilities and speed things up further. If you are going after the {Gentleman} Accomplishment then you need to let The Twilight Lady hit you first before doing anything. --Single Player Co-Op =================== Move Nite Owl into the corner to his left and lure her into the opposite corner with Rorschach so you can fight her without worrying about your partner. The Rorschach Mask | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ The origin of this special color shifting mask was explained in the book but not in the movie or game. The mask originated from a dress made of a special Dr. Manhattan spin-off fabric. The fabric contained viscous fluids between two layers of latex and was heat and pressure sensitive. The dress contained black and white moving shapes that never mixed. This made it very beautiful for Walter Kovacs who encountered the dress at his job as an unskilled worker in the garment industry. He kept the dress when the person who ordered it, Kitty Genovese, declared it ugly and never picked it up. He cut it up using special tools but became bored with it when he realized that it had no use. Two years after he acquired the dress the woman who originally ordered it was murdered and, after reading about the controversy surrounding her death, he decided to make masks out of the remains of the dress and fight crime as Rorschach. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >INF2. The Kitty Genovese Murder | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ Although "Watchmen", Rorschach, and the special dress is fictional, the murder of Kitty Genovese is *NOT*. This real life incident was used as a major turning point for one of the main characters in the "Watchmen" story. This incident is briefly touched upon in the book and barely mentioned in the game manual. This chapter goes into more detail about the incident and its aftereffects. Some excerpts from the Wikipedia entry for Kitty Genovese: Genovese had driven home from her job working as a bar manager, late in the night of March 13, 1964. Arriving home at about 3:15 a.m. and parking about 100 feet (30 m) from her apartment's door, which was around the rear of the building, she was approached by Winston Moseley, an African-American business machine operator. Moseley ran after her and quickly overtook her, stabbing her twice in the back. Genovese screamed, "Oh my God, he stabbed me! Help me!" It was heard by several neighbors, but on a cold night with the windows closed, only a few of them recognized the sound as a cry for help. When one of the neighbors shouted at the attacker, "Let that girl alone!", Moseley ran away and Genovese slowly made her way toward the rear entrance of her apartment building. She was seriously injured, but now out of view of those few who may have had reason to believe she was in need of help. Records of the earliest calls to police are unclear and were certainly not given a high priority by the police. One witness said his father called police after the initial attack and reported that a woman was "beat up, but got up and was staggering around." Other witnesses observed Moseley enter his car and drive away, only to return ten minutes later. In his car, he changed his hat to a wide-rimmed one to shadow his face. He systematically searched the parking lot, train station, and small apartment complex, ultimately finding Genovese, who was lying, barely conscious, in a hallway at the back of the building, where a locked doorway had prevented her from entering the building. Out of view of the street and of those who may have heard or seen any sign of the original attack, he proceeded to further attack her, stabbing her several more times. Knife wounds in her hands suggested that she attempted to defend herself from him. While she lay dying, he raped her. He stole about $49 from her and left her dying in the hallway. The attacks spanned approximately half an hour. A few minutes after the final attack a witness, Karl Ross, called the police. Police arrived within minutes of Ross' call. Genovese was taken away by ambulance, at 4:15 am, and died en route to the hospital. Later investigation by police and prosecutors revealed that approximately a dozen (but almost certainly not the 38 cited in the Times article) individuals nearby had heard or observed portions of the attack, though none could have seen or been aware of the entire incident. Only one witness, Joseph Fink, was aware she was stabbed in the first attack, and only Karl Ross was aware of it in the second attack. Many were entirely unaware that an assault or homicide was in progress; some thought that what they saw or heard was a lovers' quarrel or a drunken brawl or a group of friends leaving the bar outside when Moseley first approached Genovese. 0=========================================================================0 Moseley was later apprehended in connection with burglary charges. He confessed not only to the murder of Kitty Genovese, but to two other murders, both involving sexual assaults. Subsequent psychiatric examinations suggested that Moseley was a necrophile. He was convicted of murder and sentenced to death. Moseley gave a confession to the police in which he detailed the attack, corroborating the physical evidence at the scene. His motive for the attack was simply "to kill a woman." Moseley stated that he got up that night around 2:00 a.m., leaving his wife asleep at home, and drove around to find a victim. He spied Genovese and followed her to the parking lot. Moseley also testified at his own trial where he further described the attack, leaving no question that he was the killer. The initial death sentence was reduced to an indeterminate sentence/lifetime imprisonment on June 1, 1967. The New York Court of Appeals found that Moseley should have been able to argue that he was "medically insane" at the sentencing hearing when the trial court found that he had been legally sane. On March 18, 1968, Moseley escaped from custody while being transported back to prison from Meyer Memorial Hospital in Buffalo, New York where he had undergone minor surgery for a self-inflicted injury. Moseley hit the transporting correctional officer, stole his weapon, and then fled to a nearby vacant home owned by a Grand Island couple, Mr. and Mrs. Matthew Kulaga. Moseley stayed at the residence undetected for three days. On March 21, the Kulagas went to check on the home where they encountered Moseley. He held the couple hostage for over an hour during which he bound and gagged Matthew Kulaga and raped his wife. He then took the couple's car and fled. Moseley made his way to Grand Island where, on March 22, he broke into another home and took a woman and her daughter hostage. He held them hostage for two hours before releasing them unharmed. Moseley surrendered to police shortly thereafter. He was later charged with escape and kidnapping to which he pleaded guilty. Moseley was given two additional fifteen-year sentences concurrent with his life sentence. In 1971, Moseley participated in the Attica Prison riots. In the late 1970s Moseley obtained a B.A. in Sociology in prison from Niagara University. Moseley became eligible for parole in 1984. During his first parole hearing, Moseley told the parole board that the notoriety he faced due to his crimes also made him a victim stating, "For a victim outside, it's a one-time or one-hour or one-minute affair, but for the person who's caught, it's forever." At the same hearing, Moseley claimed he never intended to kill Genovese and that he considered her murder to be a mugging because "[...] people do kill people when they mug them sometimes." The board denied his request for parole. 0=========================================================================0 Many saw the story of Genovese's murder as an example of the callousness or apathy supposedly prevalent in New York City, urban United States, or humanity in general. Much of this framing of the event came in reaction to an investigative article in The New York Times written by Martin Gansberg and published on March 27, two weeks after the murder. The article bore the headline "Thirty-Eight Who Saw Murder Didn't Call the Police." The public view of the story crystallized around a quote from the article, from an unidentified neighbor who saw part of the attack but deliberated, before finally getting another neighbor to call the police, saying "I didn't want to get involved." 0=========================================================================0 The lead is dramatic but factually inaccurate. None of the witnesses observed the attacks in their entirety. Because of the layout of the complex and the fact that the attacks took place in different locations, no witness saw the entire sequence of events. Most only heard portions of the incident without realizing its seriousness, a few saw only small portions of the initial assault, and no witnesses directly saw the final attack and attempted rape in an exterior hallway which resulted in Genovese's death. Additionally, after the initial attack punctured her lungs (leading to her eventual death from asphyxiation), it is unlikely that she was able to scream at any volume. Nevertheless, media attention to the Genovese murder led to reform of the NYPD's telephone reporting system; the system in place at the time of the assault was often inefficient and directed individuals to the incorrect department. The melodramatic press coverage also led to serious investigation of the bystander effect by academic psychologists. In addition, some communities organized Neighborhood Watch programs and the equivalent for apartment buildings to aid people in distress. 0=========================================================================0 The lack of reaction of numerous neighbors watching the scene prompted research into diffusion of responsibility and the bystander effect. Social psychologists John Darley and Bibb Latane started this line of research, showing that contrary to common expectations, larger numbers of bystanders decrease the likelihood that someone will step forward and help a victim. The reasons include the fact that onlookers see that others are not helping either, that onlookers believe others will know better how to help, and that onlookers feel uncertain about helping while others are watching. The Kitty Genovese case thus became a classic feature of social psychology textbooks. 0=========================================================================0 Moseley returned for another parole hearing Thursday, March 13, 2008, the 44th anniversary of Ms. Genovese's murder. It was denied. The previous week, Moseley had turned 73 years old, and had still shown little remorse for murdering Genovese. Genovese's brother, Vincent, was unaware of the March 13, 2008 hearing until he was contacted by Daily News reporters. Vincent Genovese has reportedly never "recovered from the horror" of his sister's murder. "This brings back what happened to her", Vincent had said; "the whole family remembers". 0=========================================================================0 Moseley died on March 28, 2016 after spending more than 50 years in prison becoming one of New York's longest serving inmates. He was denied parole eighteen times during his time behind bars, the last being in 2015. /=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=\ /=========================================================================\ | >INF3. "Watchmen" **SPOILERS** | \=========================================================================/ \=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=+=/ In this chapter I go over some information, pertinent or mentioned in the game, that may be considered spoilers for those who may not have read the book or seen the movie: >>The End is Nigh *************** "The End is Nigh" is in reference to a sign carried by an unknown un-named person in the early portions of the book. It isn't until after Rorschach is captured by the Police, and revealed as Walter Kovacs, that the reader realizes Walter is this person. Walter uses this as a disguise to get closer to certain areas without suspicion then investigate as Rorschach later. >>Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein ******************************* These two reporters, mentioned throughout Part One, were major players in the investigation of the Watergate scandal that occurred in the early seventies. A scandal that would cost then President Richard Nixon his job. A couple of excerpts from the Wikipedia entry for Watergate: The Watergate scandal refers to a political scandal in the United States in the 1970s. Named for the Watergate office complex in Washington, D.C., effects of the scandal ultimately led to the resignation of Richard Nixon, President of the United States, on August 9, 1974. It also resulted in the indictment and conviction of several Nixon administration officials. The scandal began with the arrest of five men for breaking and entering into the Democratic National Committee headquarters at the Watergate complex on June 17, 1972. The men were connected to the 1972 Committee to Re-elect the President by a slush fund and investigations conducted by the Senate Watergate Committee, House Judiciary Committee and the news media. President Nixon's staff conspired to cover up the break-in. As evidence mounted against the president's staff, which included former staff members testifying against them in a Senate investigation, it was revealed that President Nixon had a tape recording system in his offices and that he had recorded many conversations. Recordings from these tapes implicated the president, revealing that he had attempted to cover up the break-in. After a series of court battles, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that the president had to hand over the tapes; he ultimately complied. Facing near-certain impeachment in the House of Representatives and a strong possibility of a conviction in the Senate, Nixon resigned the office of the presidency on August 9, 1974. His successor, Gerald Ford, would issue a pardon unto President Nixon. 0===================================================================0 The connection between the break-in and the re-election campaign committee was highlighted by media coverage. In particular, investigative coverage by Time, The New York Times, and especially The Washington Post, fueled focus on the event. The coverage dramatically increased publicity and consequent political repercussions. Relying heavily upon anonymous sources, Post reporters Bob Woodward and Carl Bernstein uncovered information suggesting that knowledge of the break-in, and attempts to cover it up, led deep into the Justice Department, the FBI, the CIA, and even the White House. Chief among the Post's anonymous sources was an individual they had nicknamed Deep Throat, who was later revealed in 2005 to be former Deputy Director of the FBI William Mark Felt, Sr. Rather than ending with the trial and conviction of the burglars, the investigations grew broader; a Senate committee chaired by Senator Sam Ervin was set up to examine Watergate and began issuing subpoenas to White House staff members. However, in the "Watchmen" universe, the scandal never breaks. Both reporters, and Mr. Felt, are murdered before they can expose it. Part One covers how it goes down. There is a slight difference between the game and book. In the book it is hinted that their bodies are found in a garage. However, since their bodies are found in the trunk of Underboss's car (in the game) it might not be too far from the truth (such as it is). >>Moloch the Mystic ***************** Moloch was the closest thing to a super-villain that the "Watchmen" universe had. He did most of his work during the time of the Minutemen but was captured during the Crimebusters era. He was then put in jail for a considerable amount of time. During this period he reformed and put behind his life of crime. After his release he went to live alone in a run down apartment and work for a branch of Veidt Industries. He plays a small but important role in the overall "Watchmen" story. >>Gerald Grice ************ Gerald Grice was a small-time criminal who kidnapped a small child in 1975. This incident would play a pivotal role in Rorschach's evolution. The small child was Blaire Roche. The kidnapper thought that he was kidnapping someone connected to the Roche Chemical fortune. Unfortunately, the child belonged to another Roche family. One that didn't have any money. Rorschach decided to intervene and promised the family to return Blaire unharmed: "Thought of little child, abused, frightened. Didn't like it. Personal reasons." After going through the underworld, he found a lead. A lead that would take him to the residence of Gerald Grice. Gerald wasn't home at the time of Rorschach's arrival. When Rorschach investigated the residence he found that the child was killed, butchered, and fed to Gerald's two German Shepards whom he saw fighting over a large human bone in the backyard. This caused Rorschach to snap. He would kill the two dogs then lay in wait for Gerald. He would assault Gerald with the two dead dogs when Gerald arrived back home after drinking. Then Rorschach would handcuff Gerald to an old stove, give him a hacksaw, then set the house on fire. This would kill Gerald. In the movie version, Rorschach would take a meat cleaver and hack Gerald to death after handcuffing him to the stove. Rorschach's ungluing is much more visceral in the movie than in the book. Before this incident Rorschach was "kinder" towards criminals. He would incapacitate them and leave them for the Police. But, after this, he would be far more brutal on them, often killing them when given the chance. >>The Twilight Lady ***************** The Twilight Lady has only a two panel mention in Chapter VII of the "Watchmen" story. Her picture was discovered by Laurie (Silk Spectre II) as Dan is giving her a tour of his basement: >>Laurie: "Hmm. What's this?" >>Dan: "That? That isn't anybody. It's just this vice queen I put away back in '68. Called herself Dusk Woman or something." >>Laurie: "The Twilight Lady. She sent you her picture?" [Laurie is looking at a picture of The Twilight Lady which is autographed - "From one 'Night Bird' to another. Love from The Twilight Lady X"] >>Dan: "Yeah, well, I guess she had sort of a fixation. She was a very sick woman. I keep meaning to throw that picture away, but you know how it is..." >>Laurie: "Mmm."
