Introduction
Hi, my name is Ryan aka Sonictrainer and this is the first FAQ that I have posted online. This guide was made to help people with any Chao problems on Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.
Since Chao are used differently in this game than in past Sonic titles, this guide will help answer people's questions about Chao, Chao Egg locations, and anything else Chao related in the game. There are also little tips about enemy weaknesses, missions, and optional characters.

What are Chao?
Chao are special creatures that live in Sonic's world. They first appeared in Sonic Adventure and could be raised and cared for in areas called Chao Gardens. Once they hatched from their eggs, players could interact with them and raise them. Besides the fact that Chao are born with certain facial expressions and colors, they also have the ability to copy characteristics of their surroundings and other living creatures, making them stronger in certain stats (speed, flying, swimming, strength, stamina, intelligence, and luck). For example, if a player were to give a Chao a rabbit, the Chao would take on the rabbit's appearance (it would either grow rabbit ears, paws, feet, and tail) and its speed stat would greatly increase. Some Chao can even grow up to be angelic Hero types (good, polite) or demonic Dark types, depending the breeder's personality. You may notice some Chao that resemble Sonic, the rest of his friends, and NiGHTs (From NiGHTs into Dreams and Journey of Dreams).
To get certain emblems in Sonic Adventure 1 and 2, players had to have their Chao win races and karate tournaments against CP Chao. This also allowed them to win medals and toys that could be played with in the gardens. Unfortunately, in those games, Chao have very short life spans and would pass away after a certain amount of time. However, if players treated their Chao very well, they will just become reborn and turn back into an egg. Since these games Chao haven稚 had actual role in any Sonic game. Besides Omochao, a mechanical Chao who gives advice, Chao only made appearances in the background. That is until now.
Basics
This game's use of Chao is completely different from what has been done in the past. In this game, Chao are collectible items that power up Sonic and his friends in battle or on the field. Here's how it works:
- Find Chao egg in area.
- Walk over to the egg and touch it to collect it.
- You have to wait for the eggs to hatch so you can either continue to play the game or put your character in a safe area and don't move.
- When the eggs are ready to hatch, you'll hear a noise and notice that the egg icon on the top screen will shake.
- Push start/Open the menu and tap on the Chao icon to see what Chao you have and which Chao have just hatched.
- Push the Shoe icon in order to bond Chao to characters on your current team.
- You can also trade with others (See part 4 for more about trading).
That is basically all there is to collecting Chao in this game.
Egg Locations
There are 100 Chao eggs total in the game that have a chance of hatching into one of 39 different Chao. If you skip a good portion of the eggs though, you'll lose your chance to collect them all. In this section, I list every egg's location, how you can get them, and warn you about story elements that could affect your search for them.
If you have all 39 Chao except Cheese, please read section 3.
Key
- Egg No: I made it so that all the eggs can be found in the easiest order. For example, after you find egg No.5, egg No.6 should be the closest egg from egg No.5.
- Team Availability: Tells which team is able to get the egg when characters are split into 2 teams in Metropolis and Nocturne
- Location on Map: Shows where the egg is on the map on the top screen.
- Field Moves needed: Tells whether or not you need a certain character, field move, or activate a certain event in order to reach the Chao. The only characters that have certain Lv.3 field moves are Sonic (Dash), Amy (Smash), and Big (Invulnerable). Please note that areas that have arrows normally represent that field moves can be used there.
- Directions: Tells you exactly how to get the egg.
- Notes: Warnings or tips about events near certain Chao eggs.

Nocturne
Available: Chapter 10 (Last area in the game)
- Total Number of eggs: 11
- In this area, the characters are split into two teams. You have to choose 2 characters to join Sonic and Tails on the 1st Team and Knuckles and Shade on the 2nd Team. Unlike before, only certain teams can get certain eggs. Who you choose to be on your teams won稚 affect your egg collecting but will affect your battles with enemies and bosses.
- Once you arrive here, you cannot return to the previous areas. Keep that in mind before you decide to go to Nocturne. Also, once you leave you can't come back to this area so make sure you carefully collect everything before you head to the stars on the map. If you are missing some rings, items, and/or Chao eggs from any of the other colonies (Kron, N'rrgal, Zoah, Voxai Beta and Alpha) you will have to return again in the new game plus and collect them then (Read Completing the Collection Section to learn more).
WARNING
- Once you go to these points you won't be able to back to the previous sections of the area or change characters on your teams. So complete everything else beforehand.
- Knuckles' Team: Climb up towards the star and fight Scylla.
- Sonic's Team: Use the Dash ramp on the west side.
IMPORTANT NOTE
- There's a glitch in the game involving one of the eggs in this area. I have info from my own observations but I will update if I find out more information about it.
- IMPORTANT NOTE
- There is a glitch that has Knuckles' team transported to Ix as soon as he comes outside of the water switch room. I myself have had it happen and missed 10 rings and this egg in Nocturne when I first beat the game. To avoid it, follow these instructions:
- Collect everything before going to the star where Knuckles meets Scylla and save before that point
- When it switches to Sonic's Team, find Charyb. (When fighting just defend and heal)
- Defeat Scylla and go directly into the room.
- Quickly grab everything in the room and then pull the switch
- Defeat Charyb
- When it switches back to Knuckles' Team immediately go outside, climb up the wall, and hop over to the right.
Egg Number | Team Availability | Location on Map | Requirements | Directions | Notes |
---|---|---|---|---|---|
Nocturne Egg 1 | Sonic's Team only | Southeast corner on ledge | Fly Lv.3 Field Move | In the second room, go left, up the stairs, and exit to the left. On the ledge, fly to the right, and you'll reach it. | You can get this egg after Knuckles' Team gets attacked by the turret and needs Sonic's team to hit the switch. |
Nocturne Egg 2 | Sonic's Team only | Center on the ledge. | None | In the second room, go right and out the door. Once outside go right and you'll get the egg. | You can get this egg after Knuckles' team gets attacked by the turret and needs Sonic's Team to hit the switch. |
Nocturne Egg 3 | Sonic's Team only | Inside the Gizoid lab in the east. | Fly Lv.2 Field Move | From egg No.2 go left up the incline and through the door. Once inside, go all the way to the right and you'll see it on the ledge. | You can get this egg after Knuckles' Team gets attacked by the turret and needs Sonic's team to hit the switch. |
Nocturne Egg 4 | Knuckles' Team only | Southeast corner of area | Fly Field Move | Fly across, walk to the right of the entrance, fly across again, and get the egg. | You can get this egg after Sonic's Team pulls the switch. |

Nocturne Egg 7 | Knuckles' Team only | Inside the water switch room. | In the left corner of the room | None | You can get this egg after fighting Scylla. |
Nocturne Egg 8 | Knuckles' Team only | Top right corner | Climb Field Move | After it switches back to Knuckles, go out the door, head left, and climb up to the wall. Walk over to the right and hop off the side. Head right past the black emerald symbol on the floor and you'll find it. | You can get this egg after fighting Charyb. |
Nocturne Egg 9 | Sonic's Team only | In the hall that Charyb flooded | You can actually get this egg before fighting Charyb. However, it's more difficult since when the hallways are flooded, your team's HP and PP decrease and you can't use POW moves when fighting enemies. So there are 2 ways to get it:Before fighting Charyb- Head straight, without turning to the right, and you'll find it at the end. OR After fighting Charyb- Go into the center room with the elevator, head southwest, and go left. | None | You can get this egg after Knuckles' Team finds Scylla. |
Nocturne Egg 10 | Sonic's Team only | In the hall that Charyb flooded | You can actually get this egg before fighting Charyb. However, it's more difficult since when the hallways are flooded, your team's HP and PP decrease and you can't use POW moves when fighting enemies. So there are 2 ways to get it: Before fighting Charyb- When you reach the center room, go northeast, and then make a right. OR After fighting Charyb- Go into the center room with the elevator, head northeast, and make a right. | None | You can get this egg after Knuckles' Team finds Scylla. |
Nocturne Egg 11 | Sonic's Team only | Near the top of the map | Go into the center room and use the elevator. Once you're on the top go right and hit the spring (it doesn't matter which one) | You can get this egg after Knuckles' Team finds Ix. | Once you enter the door, you'll be in the final battle. |
If you don't have all 40 Chao by now, see the Completing the Collection Section to learn how you can.
Cream & Cheese
In this game there are 2 optional characters that can be found and added to your team: Cream the Rabbit and E-123 Omega (See Metropolis Egg 10 the Metropolis Subsection to learn how to get Omega).
You can beat the main story without them, but they make the game easier, add more dialogue, and add more group POW moves to use in battle. If you want Cream to join your team, however, you have to find her Chao, Cheese, first. Unlike any of the other 39 Chao in the game Cheese doesn't hatch from an egg and will always be in the same place. Here's what you have to do in order to find Cheese and add Cream to your party:
- When you return to the Green Hill Zone in chapter 2, fix the bridge on the right side of the old hideout in the center of the area (On the map, it's on the right side of the star).
- Cross the bridge and immediately make a left to make a Fly icon come up.
- Fly to the left and continue left, until you see a little incline and spring. As you go past it, you'll find Cream.
- Talk to her and tell her you'll go look for Cheese.
- Return to the Green Hill Zone after finding Knuckles, in Chapter 3, and head to the stone tower near the shore on the right side of the area. Climb up the tower and go inside to find Cheese.
- Return to Cream and ask her if she wants to join.
IMPORTANT NOTE
- If you tell Cream that she can't join your team or go to Metropolis without having her join, you won't be able to use her in the game at all until you play a new game/plus (Read Section to learn more). The same thing goes for if you don稚 find Cheese. Also, if you're playing a new game/plus after beating it the first time, you will still have Cheese if you got him the first time. You can have multiple copies of Cheese.
Class/Type
Class/Type: This basically represents how powerful a Chao is and how often you'll find it. There are 3 classes/types of Chao: Common, Rare, and Unique. While they are each different from each other, no Chao can ever change its class/type.
Common Chao
Common Chao are the easiest Chao to find in the game. However, in terms of strength, some of them are the weakest. Most of these Chao give characters elemental shields and attacks, an increase in a stat, or recovery in battle. In the Chao Garden, all Common Chao are placed on the ground, underneath the Rare and Unique Chao.
Common Chao' Name | Ability |
---|---|
Barbo | Increases Maximum HP of bonded character |
Cheezlet | Bonded character does more damage in battle |
Choo | Heals bonded character's PP at the start of every combat round |
Churdle | Increases bonded character's accuracy |
Ghise | Gives bonded character water power |
Griff | Gives bonded character ice power |
Jirna | Gives bonded character an earth shield |
Knickt | Gives bonded character a lightning shield |
Koolet | Bonded character's evasiveness increases |

Stebsly | Bonded character heals HP at the start of every combat round |
Stiglin | Gives bonded character earth power |
Velk | Increases bonded character's resistance to damage |
Zimba | Gives bonded character lightning power. |
Rare Chao
Rare Chao are the in between group of the classes/types. They are harder to find than Common Chao but easier to find than Unique Chao. They are all stronger than Common Chao while some are almost equal to the Unique Chao. Most of them have abilities that affect players outside of battle while some of them are stronger versions of some of the Common Chao' abilities. The most notable Rare Chao is Fess, who increases the chances of finding more Rare or Unique Chao. In the Chao Garden, all Rare Chao are on the first 1st hillside, above the Common Chao but under the Unique Chao.
Rare Chao' Name | Ability |
---|---|
Belgog | Increases bonded character's evasiveness |
Bepke | One enemy will automatically only attack bonded character |
Blayze | Bonded character does even more damage in battle |
Bobo | Bonded character will always gain an extra reward item after battle |
Dusty | Increase your chances of catching fleeing opponents |
Fess | Increases chances of finding/eggs hatching into Rare and Unique Chao |
Gibber | Bonded character has a greater increase of resistance to damage |
Hayda | Heals PP for the entire team at the start of every combat round |
Joy | Heals all characters' HP at the beginning of every combat phase |
Kayla | Reduces your chances of being ambushed |
Keroyo | Increases the chances that enemies will flee |
Luunan | Greatly increases Maximum PP of bonded character |
Oldarg | Bonded character's accuracy is greatly increased |
Radu | Greatly Increases maximum HP of bonded character |
Zousar | Increase your chances of ambushing enemies |
Unique Chao
These Chao have the best abilities in the game. However, they are the hardest to find (except Cheese). In the Chao Garden, all Unique Chao sit at the top of the hillside, above the Common and Rare Chao.
Unique Chao's Name | Ability |
---|---|
Cheese | Greatly increases luck for the entire team |
Choopaloo | Increases XP gained from each battle |
Ferox | Bonded character's POW moves will automatically hit opponents successfully |
Ovus | Bonded character is automatically revived once when defeated in combat |
Spartoi | Bonded character's basic attacks may cause instant KOs |
Event/Viral Chao
Similar to the Pokemon games, there are extra Chao out of the 40 that you will never be able to find in the game. In order to get these Chao, you have to go to a special event to where it can be downloaded to your game or trade with someone who has it. They are also known as Viral Chao because when you trade them, you're really just downloading it to some else's game: they never leave your game through trading.
So far, Stugs is and was the only Special Event Chao released at an event. It was later discovered in the Prima Strategy guide, and through hacking, that there are actually 4 other Special Event Chao.
Once I get more information I'll update the guide on these Chao.
Event/Viral Chao' Name | Ability |
---|---|
Stugs | Bonded character avoids all enemy attacks until they are the last character standing. |
Pooki | Armor +6 and even damage dealt/spread between team |
Fimbley | Bonded character automatically avoids 3 basic attacks/rounds |
Farfinkle | Inflict random status affects to enemies/damage +2 |
Baki | Parry all attacks/damage +2 |
Level
When a Chao' level increases, its ability's effects increase. In this game there are only 3 levels: Lv.1, Lv.2, and Lv.3/Max. In order to increase a Chao' level you have to trade with people. If you want a level 3 Chao you would have to trade your Chao with 2 other people and then trade the same Chao back to get it.
Trading
In order to trade with other people, both players need their DS and a copy of Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood.
Here is list of things I've learned about trading Chao in this game:
- this is the only way for people to level up their Chao.
- when you trade Chao, you are literally giving up one of your Chao for someone else's, so make sure you have copies of the Chao you're trading.
- if you haven't found certain Chao yet, you can trade with someone who does.
- not only will they be added to your collection, but they will also be stronger.
- when you gain a Chao in a trade, all copies of the same Chao will be at the highest level of the same Chao. For example, if you have 5 copies of the Chao Bobo at Lv.1 and get a Lv.1 Bobo in a trade, all 6 of them will be at Lv.2, instead of just having 5 Lv.1 Bobos and 1 Lv.2 Bobo. Or say you have a Lv.3 Fess, and you get a Lv.1 Fess in a trade. Then you will have 2 copies of Lv.3 Fess.
- I have heard questions and statements about certain Chao' abilities being unaffected by leveling up. When I hear more about this I will update the guide.
- you need to trade in order to get Event/Viral Chao if you missed the event.
Normally when you're picking Chao to trade with someone and you tap a Chao that you just traded, a message will come up saying that you have to trade with a different person in order to level up that Chao. However, there is a still a way to trade it with that same person. When you trade the first time, save, turn the games off, take the games out, and switch DSs. Put the games in the other person痴 DS, go to the same save file, and then you'll be able to trade Chao that once had that message.
- Note: This will only work depending on the person with the least amount of Chao. For example, if one person has all 40 Chao and the other only has 20, then only 20 Chao will be traded back and forth between both people.
- IMPORTANT NOTE*
Completing the Collection
Some people will find all 40 Chao (including Cheese) before collecting all 100 eggs. However, since every egg hatched is random, you could find every egg in the game and still be missing a few. Here are a few methods and suggestions for finding all 40 Chao.
Don't forget about Cheese!: If you don't have Cream's Chao Cheese before going into Metropolis, there is already no way you can have all 40 Chao before collecting all 100 eggs. If you have all the other 39 Chao, you can either trade to get Cheese or just beat the game, play a new game Plus, and read the Cream and Cheese Section about how to get Cheese.
New game Plus: When you beat the game, you will start from the beginning with all your stats, rings, items, and Chao. All eggs, missions, and item PCs will reset themselves whether or not you already collected/completed them, so you can continue to try and collect all 40 Chao. Sonic will be the only character that keeps everything equipped while the other character痴 points, items, and Chao will have to be reset. Rings will not reset.
The Game Reset Method: When you find out that one or more of your eggs hatched, save before clicking on the icon, and see what hatched from the egg. If you have copies of all the Chao hatched, turn off the game, turn on the game, go to the same save file, and see if you got something different. When you use Fess, you also increase your chances of getting specific Chao.
Trading: You can only use this method if you know someone who has a copy of this game (Read the Trading Sub-Section 4 to learn more).

- A: No. You have to do local wireless in order to trade Chao.
Q: Can you breed Chao in this game?
- A: Yes and no. Yes, you can trade them to get better Chao. No, because there's no mating in this game.
Q: Can you bond more than one Chao to a character?
- A: No. A character can only have one bonded Chao at a time.
Q: When you give a character an item that has elemental powers and give them a Chao that has the same elemental powers, does that element become more powerful for the character?
- A: No, the attack power stays in the same range.
Q: I'm still missing an egg in the last level. Where is it?
- A: Look at the Nocturne Egg 8 in the Nocturne Subsection.
Q: In the Chao Garden, one of my Chao is flashing from normal, white, and black. Why is this happening?
- A: This happened to me after I traded Chao using the DS switch method. At first, I thought it meant that Cheezlet had just leveled up (which it did) but once I moved the screen so he was out of sight and switched it back, he returned to normal. So far it is believed to be a graphical glitch that normally goes away. If this has happened to anyone else, please email me so I can figure out what causes it (See Contact Info Section).
Q: What the...? One of my Chao is at Lv.3 and I have 45 (or more) copies of it without trading?!
- A: So far I've heard this at least twice and it seems to happen to only a certain amount of people and which Chao it affects is random. I don't know if the effect is a bad sign that your game is screwed or if some triggers it. If this has happened to anyone else, please email me so I can figure out what causes it (See Contact Info Section).
Q: What is the Special Event/Viral Chao?
- A: Look at the Subsection itself and the Chao Index for more info.
Q: How can I get the Special Event/Viral Chao? Are events exclusive to US players?
- A: There are 2 known ways of getting the Special Event Chao: Go the event where the Chao is being distributed or trade with someone who went to the event. If there's any info about any event in any part of the world, I will immediately update the guide before and after the events happen (See Contact Info Section).
Q: Is there connectivity between this game and Sonic Unleashed for the Wii?
- A: No.
