Introduction

The White Chamber is a freeware mystery adventure done in the point & click genre. You play the role of Sarah when she wakes up in a coffin with no memory of why she is there. The idea is to solve the riddles to progress and eventually escape.

This guide will help you to get past any of the trickier puzzles that have you stumped and to open up the different endings.

Version History & Other Info

If you want to contact me then you can just send a Private Message to me on Neo. Alternatively email me at fataledgezero [at] googlemail.co.uk. Do bear in mind though that I check my Neo PM box far more than my email.

Please ask permission if you wish to host this elsewhere.

Advice Corner

Just in case you still want to try to get through the difficulties yourself but are stuck. Bear the following things in mind.

  • Listen to Sarah. She will often comment on the situation, especially when using the examine (eye icon) command. This also holds true for obtaining the different endings. If Sarah thinks something is a bad idea then it probably is.
  • Revisit rooms repeatedly if stuck. Events in one room can sometimes affect something in a completely different room. If your progress isn't immediately obvious then try checking out all the other rooms. Chances are something has changed.
  • Sometimes, stupidity is the only option. If all else fails try doing something ridiculous, just as long as Sarah isn't vocal against it.

Karma System

The ending you receive at the end of the game (assuming you don't fall victim to a death ending earlier on) is based on Sarah's karma score. She starts with a karma score of 1, and can gain or lose karma based on her actions. In truth, there are 5 karma boosting events and 1 karma dropping event. This makes for a possible range of 0-6 karma. A good rule is that acts of compassion will boost her karma, whereas clearly dangerous acts will drop it.

You can keep track of this in the Research Room. The number of marks on the blackboard on the left side shows how many karma points you currently have.

Walkthrough

Guide Note

Interact means to right click an object and choose the hand icon. Examine means to right click an object and choose the eye icon.

Coffin Room

Karma Warning

Yes, one already. Answer Yes to the second question.

Interact with the wires next to the panel on the right side. Interact with the panel to be asked "Do you know where you are?" The answer to this doesn't matter in terms of progression or ending. Only difference is that answering no opens the shutters and yes doesn't. Interact with the panel again for another question "Do you regret?" Either answer progresses the events but effects your karma score. Interact with the panel again for a final question: "Are you ready?" Answer Yes to open the door, then left click the door to leave. Note that while it is possible to answer no to the last question, there is no effect and you can't progress until you go back to the panel and answer yes.

Navigation Room

Left click the door on the right side.

Storage Area

Interact with the lab coat. You will receive a key card and an override key. Left click the door you came through.

Navigation Room

Left click the door on the left side.

Computer Room

Interact with the Backup Unit. Grab the Override Key from your item inventory and left click on the Station Rotation Key Slot. Left click to the left of the unit to exit the screen. Left click the door you came through.

Navigation Room

Interact with the console. Left click the on button (the green shape on the bottom right). Now use the rotate left or rotate right commands (left clicking on either the green or white arrow markings on the bottom center of the display) until the onscreen space station image has its own arrows pointing towards the Sun. The Solar Backup gauge should fill when this is done. Left click above the console to exit it. Interact with the wall panel (next to the door you just came through). Left click the Safety Lock icon, then left click Lower Cradle. Now left click the middle door.

Rec Room

A few things to do in here. Interact with the Cupboard in the top right corner of the room. Interact with the arm to put it and the video disc #1 in the inventory. Yes, an arm. Left click either side to exit. Interact with the switch just in front of the sealed door on the right to raise a table with a video screen on it. You can play the disk you just got on it if you want by grabbing the disc from your item list and then left clicking the video screen. It is advised if you want to understand the story but it is not required. In either case, interact with the cupboard on the top left side of the room. Interact with the Strange Box to add it to your item list (although it is named Steel Box while you have it). Left click either side to exit. Left click the top center door.

Note that while it is possible to collect the Can of Drink and the Extinquisher from this room, neither one are actually used for anything.

Research Room

Interact with the axe that is buried in the control panel at the upper right of the room to add it to your item list. Left click the door you came through.

Rec Room

Left click the door on the left side of the room.

Sleeping Quarters

Interact with the mirror in the middle of the room to collect it. Interact with the blanket on one of the left side beds to collect it. Left click the door on the left side.

Beach

Left click the door you came through.

Really, there's nothing of significance you can do here. You can examine and try to interact with different things, but none have an effect on the game. It is a requirement to visit here though to progress.

Sleeping Quarters

Left click the door you came through. Sarah won't fully do it for reasons that will be obvious so you'll remain in the room. Left click the door on the right side.

Death Ending Warning

Feel like getting Sarah killed already? Try left clicking the left hand door of this room repeatedly after the above incident. Sarah will refuse at first, but will relent after 3 attempts. This will earn you the Space Ending.

Rec Room

Left click the bottom center door.

Navigation Room

Oh my, this looks different. Left click the creature on the nav console. This will take you back to the Sleeping Quarters.

Sleeping Quarters

A couple of items have appeared in here now. Interact with both the note and the video disc #2 to add them to your collection. Left click the door on the right.

Rec Room

You can play the new disc on the video screen if you want, but again this is not required to progress. Left click the bottom center door.

Navigation Room

Left click the door on the left.

Computer Room

Interact with the right computer that is near the backup unit you used before. Here you have to input a colour code by clicking the segment in order. The clue is the note, where the first letters of each word of the phrase correspond with the colours. The answer is Purple, White, Yellow, Green, Blue, Red. This brings up the droid control display. Use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move the droid to the door on the right and then press the space bar to open it. Walk over to the other side of the room. If you want to boost karma then use the axe on the chamber now. In either case though you will have to interact with the panel next to it. Walk back towards the entrance to the room and use the axe on the pipe, then interact with the now released arm to collect it. Left click the door here.

Navigation Room

Left click the center door.

Interact with the ;aser cutter next to Sarah to collect it. Now grab it out of your inventory and click on the video player to escape the torture. Interact with the batteries by the table to collect them. Interact with the scalpel and the sample dish by the blackboard to collect them. Left click the bottom door.

Death Ending Warning

Simple. Don't stop the torture. If you let it go on for too long then Sarah falls victim to the Torture ending. Do note that it takes quite a while for this to happen, so be prepared to sit around for a while.

Rec Room

Activate the switch on the right side of the room (the same one previously used to bring up the video screen) to open the mouth(!) in the floor. Now use the axe on the chain holding up the fridge. It will get stuck in the opening, so go interact with the torso to collect it and allow the fridge to fall. Left click the bottom door.

Death Ending Warning

Another one quite quickly. Exit and re-enter this room three times without doing anything about the fridge. Sarah will complain about the fridge the first two times and will fall victim to the Venomous ending the third time

Navigation Room

Left click the door on the left side.

Computer Room

Karma Warning

This is your only chance to drop your karma. Interact with the Analyser (that odd device along the bottom of the screen). Interact with the panel. Now bring out the scalpel and click on the wires. This will drop your karma by one. Left click either side to exit afterwards.

Walk In Freezer

Karma Warning

Try to use the blanket on the man in the freezer before interacting with him. Increases karma by one.

Now examine the dity wall below the quarantine sign. You will be asked 1-2 questions. The first is "Do you want to leave?" You muts answer yes to this to proceed to one of the proper endings. If you answer yes then you are asked "And risk spreading the disease?" Your answer to this affects your karma but you will be allowed to leave regardless. Left click the door on the far left side.

Endings

There are four death endings and four proper endings.

Death Endings

First let's cover the death endings, which work based of specific actions.

Space Ending

After visiting the beach area and then attempting to go back through the door. If you attempt to open the same door another three times you will get this ending.

Torture Ending

After using the VCR tape do not stop the torture sequence and you will get this ending. Takes a while though.

Venomous Ending

Once the fridge appears in the Rec Room simply do not get rid of it. Exit and re-enter the room three times with it still hanging around to get this ending.

Decay Ending

When in the quarantine area, answering no to the first question lands you with this ending.

Proper Endings

Make it to the White Chamber and you will get one of these endings, which will be based on your karma score. Time to go over those karma events.

  • You get 1 karma point for free by starting the game.
  • +1 karma for answering yes to the second question at the beginning of the game.
  • +1 karma for attempting to break the stasis chamber with the axe in the nightmare version of the computer room.
  • +1 karma for using the blanket on the man in the freezer before interacting with him.
  • +1 karma for using the blanket on the corpse in the medical bay after assembling him.
  • +1 karma for answering no to the second question when trapped in the quarantine area.
  • -1 karma for cutting the wires in the analyser in the computer room.

Torment Ending

Finish with a karma score of 0. Requires you to avoid all karma boosting events and to do the sole karma dropping event.

Damned Ending

Finish with a karma score of 1 or 2. Avoid doing too many karma boosting events.

Redemption Ending

Finish with a karma score of 3, 4 or 5. Leave at least one karma boosting event alone or make sure to do the karma dropping one if you do all the others.

Comedy Ending

Finish with a karma score of 6. Requires you to complete all the karma boosting events and to avoid the sole karma dropping event.

Easter Eggs

Debug Room

Press the Home key on your keyboard at any time to enter the debug room. Here you can use one of the many doorways to jump immediately to specific sections with a preset item list.

Icon Change

Press F10 to change the interact and examine icons. Press F11 to switch them back to normal.

Droid Console

If you input the colour code for the droid console before you're able to actually have the note then you will find a corpse staring at you through the monitor. Yes, it's the same dude you have to reassemble later.

8 bit Section

When in the Stoage Area there is a MES (an obvious reference to the NES) sitting on a shelf. Sarah will refuse to bother with it at first, but after repeated attempts she will play it, causing her to appear in an 8 bit version of the Storage Area. The only way to escape is by using the axe on the explosive.
