Introduction
Hi, my name is Ryan aka Sonictrainer and this is the seventh guide I have made and posted online and the third full walkthrough I have ever done for any game. I made this guide to help people while they play the Xbox 360 version of Generations.

Background Info
This game is Sonic the Hedgehog's 20th Anniversary title and celebrates the past 20 years, from his first game in 1991 to Sonic Colors. Sonic has become very popular to gamers in the United States, Japan, and other areas in the world. Besides games he has also had 4 animated series, a movie, and a comic book made by Archie Comics.
Important Characters
This is a list of characters in the game.
Note: The game release dates listed are the US release dates.
Sonic the Hedgehog
- First Game Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Genesis and Game Gear) on June 23rd, 1991
- Bio: A blue hedgehog who's well known for his superpower: speed. Sonic can run faster than the speed of sound and enjoys travel and going on adventures. He can also use his speed to curl into a ball, spin, and cut through different materials including metal. Although he is impatient sometimes, he always helps those in need and hates to see injustice. His only weakness is water. At high speeds, he can hydroplane, but he can't swim.
- Versions of Sonic in this game:
- Classic Sonic
- Bio: Classic Sonic is the original Sonic from the years 1991-1997 (Genesis and Saturn Eras). He is shorter and chubbier than Modern Sonic and has black eyes. While he doesn't actually talk in this game and lacks some of the moves Modern Sonic knows, he can still hold his own. Classic Sonic ends up in the White World due to Time Eater.
- Bio: Modern Sonic is the current Sonic, whose new look was first introduced in 1999 in Sonic Adventure. He is taller than Classic Sonic and has green eyes. After having his birthday party crashed by Time Eater, he ends up in the White World and goes off to save his friends.
- Bio: This is a form Sonic takes when he collects all 7 Chaos Emeralds and collects 50 Rings. In this form he turns a golden yellow, can move faster speeds, perform stronger versions of regular moves, becomes invulnerable to almost all attacks, and can even fly. However, this transformation always has a time limit. Classic Super Sonic first appeared in Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sega Genesis) and Modern Super Sonic first appeared in Sonic Adventure.
Doctor Eggman (aka Dr. Ivo Robotnik)
- First Game Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog (Sega Genesis and Game Gear) on June 23rd, 1991
- Bio: A mad scientist is who bent on taking over the world. His first plan was to capture animals and use them to power robots. With the robots he would make an army and use them to take over the world. Nowadays, his plan to create a place called Robotnikland/Eggman Land which will be his base of operations for his conquest to take over the world. After 20 years, Sonic and his friends still stand between him and his goal.
- Bio: Classic Eggman, or Dr. Ivo Robotnik as he was known in the US and other areas, is the original Dr. Eggman from the years 1991-1997 (Genesis and Saturn Eras). He has a small cape on his suit. He appears on the Signposts at the end of Act 1 of any stage and pilots Death Egg Robot. For some reason, he was kidnapped by Time Eater.
- Bio: Modern Eggman is the current Dr. Robotnik, whose new design (and original Japanese name) were first introduced in 1999 in Sonic Adventure. What is his connection to Time Eater?
Tails the Fox (aka Miles Prower)
- First Game Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 (Sega Genesis and Game Gear) on November 20, 1992
- Bio: Sonic's best friend who's IQ and mechanical abilities almost match those of Dr. Eggman's. His real name is Miles Prower but he was given the nicknames Tails due to the fact that he has 2 instead of 1. He can use them to spin like a propeller and fly around for periods of time. When traveling long distances or to airborne places, Tails uses Sonic's biplane The Tornado, which he has modified over past adventures.
- Bio: Classic Tails is the original Tails from the years 1992-1997 (Genesis and Saturn Eras). He is shorter than Modern Tails and has black eyes like Classic Sonic.

She is able to create multiple and different kinds of Hammers out of thin air. She adores Sonic so much that she has mistaken other male hedgehogs for him.

- Bio: A robotic duplicate of the real Sonic that was created by Dr. Eggman. There have been many versions and revisions of robot Sonics, which started with Silver Sonic. When you first start a new game, you'll automatically start with Classic Sonic in Green Hill Act 1. After watching the first cutscene, Modern Sonic will start off in the White World, which is a 2D hub which as the name suggests, has no color.
To return color to the White World, both Sonics must Clear Stage Acts and Challenges. In other words.
The White World is broken up into 5 areas: The Extras Area, [[Genesis Era]], [[Dreamcast Era]], Modern Era, and Final Area.
Extras Area
This is part of the White World is an area where you can relax, shop, and look at your records and unlockables.
Stage Gates
In the White World, you'll find Stage Gates which are portals to the main levels of the game. The first time you enter a Stage Gate, it will appear as ??? and the picture in the description will be fuzzy. After playing one of its Acts for the first time, the name of the Level and its picture will appear.
Act 1 Levels are the traditional 2D Sonic Stages similar to Sonic the Hedgehog 2, where you play as Classic Sonic.
Act 2 Levels are the current 3D and 2D split Stages similar to Sonic Unleashed and Sonic Colors, where you play as Modern Sonic.
If you Clear Act 1 of a Stage the next Act 1 will open. Same with Act 2, if you clear Act 2 of a Stage, the next Act 2 Stage will open.
Also after Clearing Act 1 or Act 2 of a Stage Gate, some of the colors will return to the Stage Gate. If you Clear both Acts, the Stage Gate will be fully restored, and you'll save one of Sonic's friends.
Information Pod
Information Pod is a device that answers certain questions and keeps track of your progress in the game.
Challenge Gates
After you Restore all 3 Stage Gates of an Era, Challenge Gates will appear above the Stage Gates, as well as Boss Keys.
Challenge Levels are similar to Stage Acts, except that there are different requirements for clearing a level and there are 5 different Challenges for each Stage Act, adding up to a total of 90 Challenges.
Challenge Type | Icon | Description |
---|---|---|
Speed | One of Sonic's Shoes | Challenges where Sonic has to get to the Goal quickly |
Technique | One of Sonics Gloves | Challenges where Sonic has to use certain moves |
Doppelganger | Shows a Grey Sonic Head | Challenges where Sonic must race a Ghost version of himself |
Friends | Shows one of Sonic's Friend's head | Challenges where Sonic must either get help from or compete against 1 of his friends |
Enemy | Shows a Motobug | Challenges where certain enemies are overpopulated |
Item | Shows an Item Box | Challenges where Sonic must use a certain Item repeatedly |
Ring | Shows a Ring | Challenges where Sonic must get to the end with a certain amount of Rings |
Juggle | Shows the Goal Post | Challenges where Classic Sonic must juggle the Goal Post to a specific spot |
Rescue | Shows a Flicky | Challenges where Sonic must free a certain amount of animals from capsules |
More Information about Challenges:
- In Challenges, Ranks are based on how fast you can Clear the level
- there are 7 Skills that will be added to the Skill Shop after Clearing certain Challenges
- It's also mandatory to complete at least 1 Challenge in order to grab the Boss Keys. In other words, you have to complete 9 Challenges from different Stages to complete the Story.
- If you clear all 10 Challenges for a Stage, the colors and objects will return to the platforms above the Stage Gate
Bonus Bells and Notes
Once you've Cleared a Challenge, a Bonus Bell will appear above the gate.
If you ring a Bonus Bell, it will release either a Blue or Gold Note that flies around the White World for 20 seconds. If you touch the notes before they disappear, you will unlock Artwork (if the Note is Blue) or Music (if the note is Gold) in the Collection Room. If you miss the 20 seconds, just hit the bell again to restart the chase.
If a Bonus Bell is Gold, that means it contains a Note and grey Bonus Bells are empty.
Bonus Bells unlock content in a particular order regardless of what Challenges you complete or what Rank you get for a Challenge.
Example 1:
- You have cleared 8 different Challenges but you have not collected any Notes
- You hit one of the 8 Bonus Bells
- The Note will be blue and contain Artwork 41
Example 2:
- You have cleared 20 different Challenges but you have only collected 9 Notes
- You hit one of the 11 Bonus Bells
- The Note will be Gold and contain the Music Track, Sweet Mountain

Skateboard | a skateboard | A skateboard that Sonic can ride. He can use it to perform tricks off ramps. However, once he gets on it, it only goes in one direction. If he goes into a wall, he'll fall off the skateboard. |
Gimmicks
These are items that Sonic must use to get around in the Acts. Some allow him to find secret items and shortcuts.
Name | Act 1 or 2? | Description |
---|---|---|
Springs | Both | these are yellow or red round objects that bounce Sonic quickly into the direction they're facing. Some are hanging on the sides of walls while some are on the ground. Modern Sonic can home attack them from a distance. Tri Springs, which appear in Modern Sonic's Acts, have 3 stars on them. |
Spring Poles | Both | These are poles that hang on the side of walls. Either Sonic can bounce on these to get upward. Landing on the red part will send Sonic into the air the highest. |

Springboards | Act 1 Only | These appear on the side of platforms. When Classic Sonic runs over them, they help him get across distances. |
Egg Springs | ? | These are red, rectangular, and have Eggman's icon on them. They laugh when you hit them and are normally placed to block Sonic or send him towards obstacles and bottomless pits. |
Grind Rails | Both | Either Sonic can grind on Grind Rails in order to get to certain areas. The design of the Grind Rail is unique to each area. |
Boosters | Act 1 Only | These are devices that appear on paths that make Classic Sonic move faster and increase his speed. |
Dash Panels | Act 2 Only (not counting the White World ones) | These are devices that appear on paths and Rails that make Modern Sonic move faster and increase his speed. |

Once you Collect all 3 Boss Keys, you can unlock Boss Gates in the hub.
Chaos Emeralds
In this version of the game, you will receive Chaos Emeralds after defeating Rivals and Bosses and after restoring all the Stage Gates.
After you've defeated Egg Dragoon, you'll need all 7 Chaos Emeralds to unlock the Final Boss Gate and face Time Eater.

Skill Points
After Clearing a level, once your score is determined, you will be rewarded Skill Points based on your score.
For Stage Acts, Rival Battles, and Boss Battles, it's always your score divided by 100, and rounded off. If the decimal is 4 or below, an extra point will be added.
Final Score/100 = Total Skill Points
EXAMPLE 1
- Player 1 Cleared Chemical Plant Act 2 and scored 49410
- 49410/100 = 494.1
- 494.1 rounds out to 494
- The decimal was below 4, so an extra point is added.
- Player 1 received 495 Skill points from a score of 49410
EXAMPLE 2
- Player 1 Defeated Metal Sonic and scored 50680.
- 50680/100 = 506.8
- 506.8 rounds out to 507
- Player 1 received 507 Skill Points from a score of 50680
I haven't figured out how it works for the Challenges yet.

Sega Genesis
Floating above the Green Hill Challenge 1, 2, and 3 gates is working Sega Genesis, complete with copy of Sonic the Hedgehog. The only thing missing is a controller.
Luckily, Omochao is selling one in the Skill Shop and once you buy it, you can play the original Sonic the Hedgehog game through your Sonic Generations game.
Chemical Plant Stage Gate
Availability: After Clearing Green Hill Act 2- First Game Appearance: Sonic the Hedgehog 2 on the Sega Genesis
- Sonic Friend Rescued: Amy
- Background Info: Chemical Plant is a huge factory that creates different materials. After Classic Eggman took over the plant, he used it for his own purposes, including creating the purple liquid, known as Mega Muck, which he used against Sonic. Sonic and Tails managed to defeat Eggman and free the plant from his control. It seems that since the last time Modern Sonic and Modern Tails have been here, new traps and hazards have been added to the plant.
The Chemical Plant Boss Key is floating next to the Chemical Plant Challenge 3 Gate.

Walkthrough: From the beginning you can take the high or the low path.
If you take the low path, you will run through 2 Shuttle Loops.
There's a switch that will switch the path Sonic takes (and will take him to Red Star Ring 1).
If you jump over the Switch, Sonic will go pass a blue chemical loop and towards 4 big blocks that will move so Sonic can reach 2 platforms. At the top is a Spiny so be careful.
- 2nd Checkpoint
- Continue right until Sonic runs over a Springboard and launches over or into some Mega Muck. Continue to the right, break the chemical box, and he will hit a series of Springs. Once he lands, Mega Muck will start to raise. Touch the Red Spring to get above it.
- Next, Sonic will have to get pass a blue chemical wall loop and a Spiny. As you continue, you should find an Extra Life Item Box to the right. Climb using the Blocks and avoid the Blue Chemical loops and the Spiny to reach a Red Spring.
From here, you can go 2 ways:
If you hit the Springs and use your momentum to go up the incline, you can hit a Yellow Spring to the left.
- You will end up going down a chemical slide.
- If you jump before taking the chemical slide, you will end up going down another chemical slide.
- Once you land, jump and go over the red chemical platforms to reach a path where you will find Red Star Ring 4
- Hit a Spring, to be taken to a path.
- If you don't jump before the chemical slide,
Continue running to the right and you will hit a Springboard and reach the Goal Post.
Goal Post
Chemical Plant Act 1 Red Star Rings | |
---|---|
Order | Location |
Red Star Ring 1 | At the start of the level jump across the 3 platforms to reach the higher tube path. Follow it to find the Red Star Ring in-between 2 blue chemical balls. |
Red Star Ring 2 | From #2, run back to the beginning of the split path and take the bottom path. Go straight to the right without jumping. You should hit a hit Spring that sends you up an incline and to the Red Star Ring, which is floating above clear tube plug. |
Red Star Ring 3 | From the 1st Checkpoint, go as fast you can down the incline and use your momentum to reach the higher platform to the right. Jump over the Spinys and hit the 2 Springboards. When you reach the incline, charge up your Spin Dash and rocket up to one of the platforms to the left. Ride the platform to the top left area with the chemical slide and Jump across 3 more platforms above the slide to find the Red Star Ring. |
Red Star Ring 4 | On the chemical slide, Jump before the gap, and run across the platforms, slide down another slide, hit a spring and run up an incline. Use the Springs to take you up to the Red Star Ring. |
Red Star Ring 5 | From #4, drop back down and backtrack to where the platforms are and run to the left and into the Mega Muck section. It's floating near a Grabber and a Booster. |

- Summary: Modern Sonic's version of Sky Sanctuary has multiple pathways that lead through different temples and ruins in the sky.
Walkthrough: The stage begins with Sonic grinding off a Rail and hitting 1 of 3 Dash Rings.
After he lands, 3 Eggrobos will stand in his path. Behind the Eggrobos are 2 clouds that Sonic can bounce off instead of taking the steps to the left. Once Sonic makes it to the top of the stairs, he will run past a Omochao thats in front of the Trick Ramp that tells him about Trick Ramps.
After hitting the Trick Ramp, Sonic go number of ways to the Checkpoint:
- The Low Path:
- The High Path
1st Checkpoint
From the Checkpoint jump into the Rainbow Rings (where Red Star Ring 2 is) and land on the incoming platform.
There are 2 paths you can take from here.
If you take the Left Path: Go to the left and Jump into the incoming Rainbow Rings. Next, Home Attack the 2 Egg Robos and touch the Dash Panels to the right.
- 2nd Checkpoint (Left Path)
- From the 2nd Checkpoint, Sonic will grind towards a red spring that takes him to a group of Elevator Poles. Jump across both of the Elevator Poles to reach a floating platform. To the left of the platform are 2 Eggrobos. Carefully, use the Homing Attack to take them out and follow the trail of Rings to another Elevator Pole.
- Jump off the pole to the left, touch the Dash Panels, and run into the the temple.
Inside the the temple are 3 Egg Robos, a normal one and 2 black ones. If you go to the back of the temple, you will find a 10 Ring to the right and an Extra Life further behind where the 10 Ring.
From here, there are 2 paths:
- Regular Path: Go past the Eggrobos and the fountain to touch the Checkpoint.
3rd Checkpoint
While the top path is definitely faster than the bottom path, both will intersect and led Sonic into a 2D section.
From here, Sonic can:
- Top Path: keep boosting and run into a spring which will lead you to an platform with 3 Rings. Jump to the right and Home Attack the Egg Robo to land on a cloud. Bounce off the cloud to reach another cloud and hop up into a Dash Ring. The Dash Ring will take you to a Rail that goes through a small tunnel. Once Sonic comes out of the tunnel Jump to land onto the next platform. Next, quickly Home Attack the 2 Egg Robos to land on a platform and Jump over the spikes.
From here, you should be able to see 2 Rainbow Rings. The top one leads to a higher path (and Red Star Ring 4) and the bottom one leads to the regular path.
4th Checkpoint
On the bottom path, there are 2 red platforms that fall after Sonic steps on it. If you fall, you will be in an area with 3 Eggrobos. Use your Homing Attack to take them out and hit the Tri Spring.
Either way, you should end up near 2 Eggrobos near a spinning platform. Hit the Tri Springs to go up and you should find an Extra Life.
Now, you can Jump across the Spinning Platforms, hit the Step Switch to activate the stairs, and grab the Pulley to go above to the higher path, or jump down to the bottom path.
If you jump down to the bottom path, it goes into 2 paths again both with Checkpoints.
5th Checkpoint
Run across the platform and hit the Springs. From here, you should be able to Home Attack the middle Eggrobo and then the top one. Next, jump up the steps and the platform and hit the Tri Springs to reach a rail. Grind across it and Jump to reach the Warp Point.
After Sonic touches the Warp Point, you be near Checkpoint 6.
6th Checkpoint
Grab the Pulley and carefully run across to the fallen column. From here you go up or take the bottom path again.
If you take the bottom path, you will find Dash Panels that take you to a Eggrobo near Checkpoint 7.
7th Checkpoint
From here Sonic will have to Quick Step to the left, to the right, and then to the left again. Sonic will go into the last 2D section of the level.
Theres a shortcut here but I havent found it yet.
Anyway, for the regular path, he will grind onto a Rail and jump towards a Spring or fall to where a Dash Panel is. If you fall to where the Dash Panel is, boost up to the incline to reach 2 clouds that you need to bounce off of to reach an area.
Now, in this Sonic has to hit the Switch to continue on. However, as soon as you touch the switch, an Eggrobo will appear to try and touch another switch, which will block off the quick path, and force Sonic to go above.
Race it to the switch and destroy it before it can touch the switch.
Last Checkpoint
Grind across the rail to the last temple. Inside are 4 Eggrobos. Get past them to touch the Springs to the left. As soon you reach the platform, parts of it will crumble. Carefully walk to the other side of the platform, jump across, and Home Attack the 3 Eggrobos.
Finally, hit the Dash Panels to run on a path that spirals and is slowing crumbling behind you. You can drift here as well to get around it faster. At the end of the path are Springs that will send you towards a Pulley, that takes you to the Goal Ring.

3D Section: The Boss Battle will always start out in 3D. On the regular 3D path, Sonic will have to dodge attacks while trying to get close enough to land a hit.
First Big Ramp
2D Section: After Egg Dragoons attacks twice in 3D, the camera will switch to a 2D section. If you are fast enough, you should be able to Home Attack Egg Dragoon before the Ice Crusher attack, during the brief moments after Dragoon Breath 2D stops.
Skydive Section: After getting hit 5 times, the field will switch to Skydive as Sonic and Egg Dragoon go through a purple portal. Now you have to carefully dodge the Drill Missiles while holding the Boost Button and getting close enough to do a Homing Attack. You be able to get in 2 hits at the most during this time. After leaving a Skydive Section, Egg Dragoon will be vulnerable to Homing Attacks.

Nickname | Description | Tips |
3D Dragoon Breath | Egg Dragoons feet shoots a wave of ice towards Sonic. | He will always use this at the beginning of the fight. You can either dodge it by Quickstepping or avoid it altogether by taking the Rails. |
Dragoon Laser | He will sometimes use this after using 3D Dragoon Breath. Basically, he fires 8 lasers that spiral along the path. | |
Drill Missile | Egg Dragoon will fire these towards Sonic when he takes the Rails. However, he will use this instead of the Dragoon Breath after being hit 4 times. | |
2D Dragoon Breath | Unlike the 3D version, Egg Dragoon fires 6 individual shots, one from each foot, onto Sonics path to create obstacles that will hurt Sonic if he runs or boosts into them. | |
Ice Crusher | After firing 2D Dragoon Breath, Egg Dragoon will immediately follow up by taking his arms and transforming them into barricades to trap Sonic. | |
Skydiving Drill Missile | This is the only attack that Egg Dragoon uses in the Skydiving Section. |
