Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers the GameBoy game known as A-Force. A-Force is your standard scrolling-shooter game in which you protect Earth, two millennia in the future, from an invasion of aliens.

It has been twenty years since the release of this game in 1993. And yet, like hundreds of GameBoy games, it has gone uncovered by GameFAQs in that entire time. The FAQ Contributor Boards, including myself, of GameFAQs have taken it upon themselves to complete at least one FAQ for each and every GameBoy game, among other consoles.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Pickup Analyses

P Pickup

^s1|

  • Purpose: Induce some sort of strength boost. Also will increase the power of your initial projectile shot by adding another projectile to it, up to three.

Triple Blaster Pickup

^s2|

  • Purpose: If you're using your initial weapon (the one shooting circles), this will automatically give it three projectiles shot at once. Otherwise, no effect.

Laser Wave Pickup

^s3|

  • Purpose: To change your weapon into a laser wave-shooting one. These lasers, while narrower, are more focused and often more powerful, and can go through enemies. These are the weapons you'll want to obtain during gameplay.

Lightning Bolt

^s4|

  • Purpose: Defeats all enemies on-screen when you touch it.

Health Pickup

^s5|

  • Purpose: This will refill your health by up to 20 points, up to an overall total of 100 points. If your total is already 100 points, you'll be raised to 120 points. However, this extra twenty points will never be auto-restored at one point-per-second, so the auto-restoration will not start until get below 100 points again, and, even then, it'll only re-restore up to 100 points.

Game Basics

^s6| ^s7| First and foremost, this game takes place in a side-scrolling shooter format. You'll proceed along the level, dragged by the left end of the screen if needed, shooting enemies on the way. The enemy swarms themselves are rather randomized, so a walkthrough, in essence, is tough to make. Despite the this, enemies only have two basic attacks: circular projectiles, released up to five at a time, and lasers. The former will take off six points of health at once, and the latter wipes out fifteen points of health. You can see images of enemies doing both attacks on the right side. Both attacks are readily dodged by simply moving aside. The same would go for running into an enemy ship, which takes off a whopping thirty points.

Of course, what is your health? In the lower-right corner of the screen is a misnamed damage meter. In reality, just think of that as your HP. It'll start at 100 points at the start of each level, and can go up to 120 if you grab a health pickup at 100 points. It'll be reduced as you take damage, as mentioned in the previous paragraph. However, damage can be healed. It is automatically restored at one point per second (up to 100 points), and can restored by grabbing health pickups.

^s8| There is one way to prevent your damage other than dodging. Whenever you press the B Button, 30 points of health will be deducted from you meter -- obviously, only if you have 31+ points of health! At this point, your character will look kind of like the character in the screenshot to the right - a wave will go along the character, and his attacks become tall, thin lasers. This will last for approximately ten seconds, but, during that time, you can take no damage.

At the end of each level, you'll find a boss - you'll know it's coming when the screen suddenly blackens and a silhouette appears on-screen. Unlike the in-level enemy swarms, these are not random, and you'll find their respective strategies in the Level Bosses section. Defeat these difficult enemies to move on to the next level.

The game will end whenever you beat the final level's boss, or when you run out of credits. You'll immediately go to a "Continue?" screen when you lose all of your health (the damage meter hits "000"), and, from there, you can opt to continue. You only have three continues, though!

World Map

^l9|

After finishing the first level of the game, you'll arrive at a screen not unlike the one above. This is effectively how you choose how to play the rest of the game. You can use the Select Button to swap amongst the targets, then press the Start Button to begin the level.

For the record, the "Bonus Points Earned" column in the below table represents the total bonus points earned from the stages in the "Stages Played" column (which doesn't deal with the first/last ones) - you'll always end up with the 100,000 from the first one, and the 500,000 from the final one, because you always play those.

Target Stages Played Bonus Points Earned End-Game Minimum Score
Target A 2, 3, 4 900,000 points 1,500,000 points
Target B 3, 4 700,000 points 1,300,000 points
Target C 4 400,000 points 1,000,000 points

Tips

  • Don't worry about points! Points have absolutely no use in this game, so it's better to go for surviving than to risk your life, going through lasers, to smash an enemy.
    • By this logic, it would also be wiser to choose Target C after the first level, unless you also want a fuller game experience.

  • Get the lasers! Seeing as, whenever you grab a Triple-Blaster pickup, it'll replace a laser pickup, it's best to avoid the Triple-Blaster pickups entirely. This is because the lasers are more powerful and they pierce through enemies.

  • Hold down the A Button! There's no penalty that's even remotely possible in this game for missing a shot, so why not keep firing? If anything, you might an enemy that's just about to come on-screen just as it does so!

  • Save some pickups 'til the laser minute! While pickups will just go away if they go off-screen, it may be better to save some - notably the health and lightning ones - until the last minute, in case you suddenly need either one. But don't wait too long or you'll lose 'em!

  • Stay in the center! Enemies can come from both the left and right, not to mention the top and bottom. Staying in the center of the screen therefore makes it much less likely that you'll be rammed by an enemy and lose 30 points of health. It also leaves more places to escape towards if you need to.
    • The only exception to this should be during a boss fight, where the enemies are so big that not staying at the far left risks you getting damaged by being run into.

Level Bosses

Stage 1 Boss

^s10|

Strategy: There's not a whole lot to say about this boss. Just dodge up and down, both the shots and the ship. Holding the A Button should manage to kill this thing with coincidental hits eventually. It's weak point is in the nearby screenshot, in yellow.

Stages 2, 3, and 4 Boss

^s11|

Strategy: The weak point of this boss, too, is in yellow in the attached screenshot. Anyways, how to beat this? Assuming it moves upward first, I'd too move upward long enough to get off two shots before quickly retreating - it'll soon fire a laser. I'd then deal with the projectiles that are fired at the same time. Then following the boss and continue shooting at its face while dodging its attacks as best as you can. When it returns towards the top, get below it to dodge the laser, and loop from there - the boss moves in a regular pattern.

Stage 5 Boss

^s12|

Strategy: This boss can be a bit annoying, as it often fires four projectile attacks and will also fire its laser cannon every now and then. It can be beaten with a simple strategy, however, so long as you maintained good health throughout the level. You simply need to follow the boss and attack its weak point - once more in yellow - as you go. Dodge any lasers that are tossed out, of course, but don't worry too much about the projectiles.

This boss will, every now and then, thrust forward. Due to the tine-like projections on its sides, that'll trap you, almost always making you choose between the laser and running through the ship. (Note that the laser is better - only costs 15, not 30, points of health.) Try to avoid this thrust - it'll happen whenever the boss is on the rightmost portion of the screen. You can simply loop from there.
