Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers the Japanese action-RPG Dragon Buster II. Dragon Buster II was released in the late 1980s as the sequel to the first, and moderately more popular, Dragon Buster. This one went relatively unknown by the majority of the gaming community due to a supposed problem in it: it tried to emulate The Legend of Zelda (released just a year after the original Dragon Buster and spawning a 25-year-plus long series) more than its own predecessor, and did so in a fairly poor way.

I can understand that. It's not that hard to see. >_>

Over twenty years have passed since Dragon Buster II's release. Like many hundreds of NES games, it was uncovered. However, the NES FAQ Completion Project was started in the mid-2000s to FAQ all of the games for the NES console, and, so far, all of the North American games are covered. Now it's mostly down to Japanese games like this.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Game Controls

Button Resultant Effects
D-Pad Move around.
A Button Pick up keys and other items on the ground.
B Button Shoot arrows; use items on regional maps.
Start Button Pause and unpause gameplay; also views status.
Select Button Go into a dungeon, or through a door in a dungeon.

Game Basics

The game is divided into six single "regions", each of which is basically an overworld map. In each region, there are a number of dungeons - primarily, caverns, castles, towers, and trees. Most of the dungeons will have repetitive layouts. There are two ways of interpreting that, as well, both of which are true. Some dungeons are stuck in an endless loop if you go the wrong way, making mapping a painful process for me or you. Some dungeons also have the exact same layout.

You can enter a dungeon by pressing the Select Button in front of it. If you have an item, such as a tomahawk for cutting trees, you can use it to progress further by using the B Button in front of the proper structure. (For example, tomahawks for forests, or camels for deserts.) Use the D-Pad to move around the world map.

^s1|The main eight arrow reflections. Your main goal is to progress through these dungeons to the mountain of the region, where you can find and fight a boss. This boss typically consists of one of the six dragons of the world - hence the name Dragon Buster. You can fight bosses and enemies in the same way - with arrows. Most enemies will usually only take one or two arrows to be defeated, but more become required as you progress through the game. (There is also a special fire arrow that deals five times more damage.) These arrows are fired with the B Button. If they go too far or hit someone, they disappear and damage is applied as needed. If they hit a wall, they go off at an angle like in the nesrby image - the top four are at forty-five-degree angles, and the bottom four are at ninety-degree angles (the arrow just comes back at you).

Arrow Mechanic Abuse

The game will only permit you to have one arrow on-screen at a time - kind of like how Galaxian limits you to one missile, or Super Mario Bros. usually limits you to two fireballs. There is a way to abuse this. As you may know, the arrow will disappear upon hitting an enemy (or you), and, just after it disappears, you are allowed to fire another arrow. To abuse this, you must get close to an enemy - the closer the better - and mash the B Button. This will induce a type of rapid-fire effect that can make even the dragon bosses easy!

^s2|The key and door. In each dungeon, one enemy is holding a key - kind of like in the Dark Cloud series, if you've ever played that. Defeat him and you'll find the key. Press the A Button to pick it up. Then you need to find a door in the dungeon. The door is usually in a set room and looks like the nearby screenshot of the key and door. Once there, if you don't want to explore anymore, press Select on the door.

After a dungeon is exited - they only have the one floor - you will return to the regional map, with a new item as applicable, and the dungeon will have disappeared from the map. That individual dungeon is now no longer accessible and its disappearance will allow you to go forward.

During the dungeons, you do not want to be hit by an enemy. Enemies will take away some of your health. Your health can be seen by your shirt color -- light blue means four hits left, green means three hits left, yellow means two hits left, and red (or orange) means just one more hit and you'll lose a life! Your health can be restored by one point for grabbing a fairy in a dungeon, and fully after a certain period of time if you rest in a healing spring. (You don't find those until the first mountain dungeon.) If you lose all of your lives, you will get a game over and a password.

Earning Extra Lives

^s31|The rare extra-life pickup! Earning extra lives is quite possible. As you probably know by now, grabbing a fairy in a dungeon will heal your health by one of four points, correct? Well, if you catch one while your health is full (light-blue clothes), it will be added to your stock of fairies - press the Start Button to see it. When you get four total fairies in such a manner, you earn an extra life.

Additionally, it seems that you also earn extra lives with every 20,000 points earned. There is also a particular pickup, pictured at the right, that can earn you extra lives.

There are several pickups in this game. One is the key to the end of the dungeon. Another are arrow quivers. They don't need to be picked up with the A Button, unless they are fire arrows, which deal five points of damage (kill all but dragons in a single hit). There are fairies, which are supposed to heal your health by 1/4 and are also used to gain extra lives. Then there are shields, or invincibility items as they are more properly known. These shields are dropped by enemies and, when picked up, can render you invincible temporarily and will let you kill any enemy in your way - like Stars in Super Mario Bros.

The goal of the game is to proceed to the mountain dungeon of each of the six regions and defeat every boss within - after finishing one mountain dungeon, you will proceed to the next region without a chance to finish up the current one. The game ends upon beating every dragon, or upon losing every life.

Walkthrough

Some Notes (READ!)

This game is a bit different than most RPG games due to its relative non-linearity. There is no one set path to go through the dungeons. You don't have to do every dungeon, or you can if you desire to. Thusly, to cover this properly and to compensate for the repetition, randomness, and various permutations of some dungeons, I will cover the game's walkthrough like so:

First will come the regional overworld map. I will tie together some screenshots to make it and display the relatively whole layout of the area to you. Then I will mention some paths to take, what items dungeons can hold, and so on.

Next, I will cover the various dungeons of the overworld. I will cover them in their own general sections - not every single one is unique. Some, in fact, have repeating patterns in their dungeons, so it would be pointless to post multiple times. I will place a map for the general dungeon layout. You'll notice more fully here that some dungeons have an odd loop in them to make them seemingly infinite but, for an RPG, these dungeons can actually be quite small. =P

Each dungeon and the permutations thereof will usually get two walkthroughs, unless I can make them work the same. The first is a quick walkthrough - it'll guide you to the enemy(s) with the key, then to the door. That'll be all, more or less. The second is a completionist walkthrough - this one will detail how to do absolutely everything that is a fixed occurence, namely grabbing all item pickups and defeating all enemies.

Note that enemy references are vague for a reason. Even within the different dungeon permutations listed, there are a number of other monsters that can be had. You'll need to see the Enemy Bestiary section for data on the individual enemies and how to deal with them.

Thirdly and finally, I will cover the mountain dungeon(s) of the area - it is a fixed occurence that must happen before progressing on to the next region. I will cover it like the previous dungeons, but it's more of a "dungeon start, to a healing pool, to the dragon" layout for the walkthroughs.

If you came from the table of contents at the top of this document, you probably noticed how some dungeons had an addendum after their title - like Region 1 Trees - Type #1. That basically means that, within the same dungeon type, there are multiple maps that can be navigated. You'll have to figure out which for yourself is the proper map, though it's usually pretty obvious.

Fine so far? Let's get dragon-bustin'.

Region 1 Overworld

^l3|The overworld map of Region 1.

Dungeon Type Dungeon Number Notable Contents
Castle 2 A lot of arrows
Cave 4 None
Mountain 1 Dragon boss
Tower 2 Fairies
Tree 2 Tomahawks

So, the mountain dungeon is in the northeast corner. There are a fair few caves, a few castles, a few towers, and a few trees. I would recommend first plundering the nearby castle for some arrows, then do what you want. The shortest way is to take out the two tree dungeons, the trees near them, then head east to the mountain. However, I would also recommend trying out for the two tower dungeons for fairies and such. Completionism here will set you up pretty well for the game ahead.

As a note, the castles have five quivers of arrows total, which is definitely a boost. The tree dungeons will bring you some tomahawks to cut down the northern forests with, and towers have plenty of fairies for extra lives and the like, I believe. Caverns have nothing in particular.

Region 1 Castles

^l4|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

When you begin the dungeon, go north a room. Defeat the enemy and grab the arrow quiver there. Go north another room to find another arrow quiver, then head two rooms to the east. In that room, you'll find a large skeleton. Unlike the previous enemies of the dungeon, he'll take two arrows to kill. Also be wary - he moves pretty fast and likes to hit you. After you defeat him, he'll drop the key. Bring it over to the door, on the east side of the room in which you found him.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

When you begin the dungeon, go north a room. Defeat the enemy and grab the arrow quiver there. Go north another room to find another arrow quiver, then head two rooms to the east. In that room, you'll find a large skeleton. Unlike the previous enemies of the dungeon, he'll take two arrows to kill. Also be wary - he moves pretty fast and likes to hit you. After you defeat him, he'll drop the key to the door. The door is on the east side of this room.

However, you are a completionist. Go south a room and you'll find a room with an enemy in it. Defeat him and pick up the arrow quiver nearby. Then go east one room and north two. Yes, they're rather featureless. In this room, go west two rooms and, in each, you'll find an arrow quiver. One more room to the west is the room in which you started. Go north two and east two rooms to return to the room where the door is.

Region 1 Trees - Type #1

^l5|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going east one room. There, grab the quiver of arrows and go north another. Defeat the enemy in the room there to find the key to the door. The door itself can be found by going either east or west two rooms - it loops, as the map above shows, so it won't matter. In that room, defeat the lone dinosaur and the door should appear.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going south one room and west one. Grab the arrows from there and go west another room. Defeat the enemy there, then grab the arrows. Going to the west another room will show you a dinosaur. Defeat him and you'll notice something on the ground. This is an invincibility shield, which functions like the Stars in Super Mario Bros. - make you undamageable and kill all you touch!

Go east a room and south. There, go west and defeat the enemy, then grab the key. Go west two rooms and defeat the enemy there. This will reveal the door but, being a completionist, you want more. Go east or west two rooms, then south. You'll find another quiver of arrows there. That's really it, item-wise. All that remains is going east another room if you want to defeat another enemy. After that, go west one room (if you defeated the final enemy), north one, then east-or-west two. Go on through the door.

Region 1 Trees - Type #2

^l6|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Simply go south a room upon starting. There, defeat the enemy for the key to the door. Pick up the nearby arrow quiver, then go west a room to find the door. Yup, it's that easy.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Upon beginning, go south a room and then defeat the enemy there. Pick up the arrow quiver nearby, then go west a room. There's the door, if you want to use it. Go north if you want to defeat one more enemy, then go into the room south of the door to find another arrow quiver. That's it - go north and through the door.

Region 1 Caves - Type #1

^l7|Dungeon map.
This dungeon is fairly simple, actually, so completionism is the same as being quick, more or less. Anyways, upon entering the dungeon, go north a room. Collect the arrow quiver there, then go west a room. There, you'll find the lone monster of the dungeon. Defeat him with two arrows, then go north a room, and east another. In this room, you'll find the door back outside.

Region 1 Caves - Type #2

^l8|Dungeon map.
This dungeon, too, is fairly simple, actually, so completionism is the same as being quick, more or less. Anyways, upon entering the dungeon, go east and north a room. Collect the arrow quiver there, then go west a room. There, you'll find the lone monster of the dungeon. Defeat him with two arrows, then go north a room, and east another. In this room, you'll find the door back outside.

Region 1 Towers

^l9|Dungeon map.
NOTE

As noted on the map above, the enemy I navigate you to may not always have the key to the dungeon. Therefore, if the walkthrough below does not give you the key (it goes along with the map above), check the other rooms marked with an "F" for a fairy-dropping witch. One of them will have it!

QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going west one room and north another. In this room, defeat the witch (takes two hits) to obtain the key to the door of the dungeon. To find the door, go south and east back to where you started. Go south two rooms, defeating an enemy on the way to get a fairy. Then go east one room to find another such enemy. Go east one room, then north two to find yet another such enemy. Go east one room. Go south two rooms to the door if you want a fairy (from an enemy of course), or north two if you don't want to fight.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go west one room. Head south to find a witch in the room there; deal two arrows into it to defeat it and retrieve a fairy. Go north two rooms now to find another witch, this one yielding the key to the door. Go north another room to find an arrow quiver, then go west and south a room to find another arrow quiver near an enemy. Then go north three rooms (until you cannot go north any more).

Go east two rooms, then south one. Defeat the witch there to find another fairy. Afterwards, go south and east a room to find another fairy-yielding witch. Go east one room and north two to find a fourth fairy-yielding witch. Then go east a room. Go south from there to find the fifth fairy-yielding witch, then go south once more to find the room with the door going back outside.

Region 1 Mountain

^l10|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

From the start, go west two rooms. Defeat the enemy in there, then go south a room. Take the arrow quiver from the east side, then go south another room. There, you'll beat up another dinosaur before continuing your trek southward. In the next room, you'll find another enemy. Defeat him and the pool of water nearby will suddenly turn blue. This water is a healing spring; if you stay in it long enough, your clothes will also turn blue - that is to say, it fully heals you!

Enjoy your stay, then go east a room and south another. Take the arrow quiver, then go east a room. To the north, you'll find your boss, a dragon. These bosses are pretty easy to beat if you're at full health. They take a fair number of arrows to beat, but the usually-successful strategy is to go north towards them, then get very close and mash the B Button. Seeing as the game only lets you have one arrow on-screen at once, being very close to the dragon induces a type of rapid-fire effect, making this battle very easy.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

From the start, go north a room. Defeat the enemy in there and head east two rooms. Defeat the dinosaur in there, too, then go south a room. Defeat the enemy here, then the one in the room to the west if you desire. Go south and, if you did opt to beat the extra enemy, you'll find two paths going east and west. Go along the west one to find an arrow quiver, then head as far east as possible to find, in the east alcove of the final room, another arrow quiver!

Go south a room and you should find another enemy. Defeat this one, then go south another room. Defeat the final dinosaur in the dungeon, then notice how the water nearby turned blue. Get into this water to heal yourself fully after a few brief seconds, then go east a room, then south another. You'll find an arrow quiver in this room.

Now, go east one room and exit it to the north. This will bring you to the regional boss, a dragon.

Region 2 Overworld

^l11|Region 2's overworld.

Dungeon Type Dungeon Number Notable Contents
Castle 7 A lot of arrows
Cave 12 None
Mountain 2 Dragon boss
Tower 5 Fairies
Tree 2 Tomahawks

As you could hopefully gather from the map above, there are two mountain dungeons. Nice, I guess. Either one will work for the purposes of game continuation, but you only get to do one.

As for a quick way to get to one of them, the northeast one, you probably want to go through the caves east of where you start in the southeast corner. Go north and take out the cave, then the tower there. Go north from there and clear the tree for a Tomahawk, which you can use to chop down the forest to the east to reach the mountain.

Completionism is pretty easy to deal with. The only remotely significant debate is whether and how to use the north-central tree dungeon's Tomahawk. Remember, to get to the northeastern mountain, you can clear out the caves and castles south of there to clear a path, meaning you need to go west from the north-central tree with your Tomahawk - if at all. I mean, look at the caves just south of that forest... =P And, speaking of which, the forest next to the northwestern mountain doesn't need to be chopped down, though it looks like it - just get next to the mountain and press the Select Button.

Of course, completionism probably won't reward you too well here - already, it's not hard to get a stock of 100+ arrows by the end of the first region, making towers the only really important objects. I would prefer to go into the southwest castle for arrows (hey, you never know when you'll need them), then north through the trees to a tower. Then I go east to the castle and cave, then the tower. I veer to the south and clear out the tree and cave, then the towers, and possibly the castles. I go north and take out the castles for more arrows, then, since I usually have around 150 ~ 200 by now, I take out the brief caverns to the east and head into the northeast mountain. That's just a recommended path, though. Do as you will.

All in all, this map can be pretty rewarding. Four towers has the potential to award three or four lives if you play your cards right, and trust me, you'll want lives. Arrows tend to be readily found in castles as well, in the general region of 50 each, making around 250 ~ 300 arrows a realistic possibility. Completionism is not rewarded as well in a time-profit comparison except for your score statistic, but, again, it's up to you on what you want to do.

Region 2 Castles

^l12|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

When you begin the dungeon, go north a room. Defeat the enemy and grab the arrow quiver there. Go north another room to find another arrow quiver and an enemy, then head two rooms to the east. In that room, you'll find a large skeleton. As before, he'll take two arrows to kill. After you defeat him, he'll drop the key. Bring it over to the door, on the east side of the room in which you found him.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

When you begin the dungeon, go north a room. Defeat the enemy and grab the arrow quiver there. Go north another room to find another arrow quiver and another enemy, then head two rooms to the east. In that room, you'll find a large skeleton. As before, he'll take two arrows to kill. After you defeat him, he'll drop the key. The door is on the east side of this room.

However, you are a completionist. Go south a room and you'll find a room with an enemy in it. Defeat him and pick up the arrow quiver nearby. Then go east one room to slay another enemy, then north two room. There, go west two rooms and, in each, you'll find an arrow quiver, in addition to an enemy in the first room you reach. One more room to the west is the room in which you started. Go north two and east two rooms to return to the room where the door is.

Region 2 Caves - Type #1

^l13|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

When you begin the dungeon, defeat the enemy on the east side of the starting room. Then go east a room and defeat the larger enemy there. He will drop the key. Go west one room, then south another. Pick up the arrow quiver here and go south another room. There, defeat the enemy, grab the nearby arrow quiver, and go through the door.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

When you begin the dungeon, defeat the enemy on the east side of the starting room. Then go east a room and defeat the larger enemy there. He will drop the key. Go west one room, then south another. Pick up the arrow quiver here and go south another room. There, defeat the enemy, grab the nearby arrow quiver, and go west a room. There, defeat the enemy, then go north another room to defeat another enemy. And that'll pretty much finish the dungeon - go east and south a room to return to the room with the door.

Region 2 Caves - Type #2

Being quick and being completionist pretty much do the same thing here, so there's no point in listing separate walkthroughs.

Upon entering the dungeon, head north a room. Take the quiver of arrows there, then go west a room. Defeat the water monster there to find the key to the door of the dungeon. Go north and east a room. Defeat the enemy there if you desire, then go on through teh door back outside.

Region 2 Caves - Type #3

Go north a room. Defeat the enemy there, then go east a room to find another enemy. Defeat it, too, and you'll find the key to the door of the dungeon. Go north a room and take out the enemy there, then the enemy in the room to the east. In that same room, take the quiver of arrows, then go into the nearby door. (To completionists, there is also an enemy north and west of this room.)

Upon starting, go east one room and defeat the enemy, then go south a room. Defeat the enemy there to obtain the key to the door to the dungeon. Go west and south one room to find another enemy. Slay it and go east a room. Then head south and defeat the enemy, then east to fight another. Go north one room to find another enemy. Defeat him and take the nearby quiver of arrows.

Go north another room, east one, south one, and east one, defeating enemies all the while. Here, go east a room and north two. There, you'll find the door to the dungeon, plus a quiver of arrows. First, though, if you want, go west two rooms to defeat an enemy in each, then use the door.

Region 2 Trees - Type #2

^l18|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go east and north a room. Defeat the enemy there, then go east two rooms or west two rooms to find the door back outside. The east path does have an enemy to fight, so you know.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go south a room, then west one. Take the quiver of arrows there, then go west another room. Defeat the enemy and take the arrows, then continue west and defeat the enemy there. Go east (or west) two rooms, then north one. Defeat the enemy there, then the one in the room to the west. Continue into the next room to find a quiver of arrows.

Then go north another room. There, defeat the enemy to find the key to the dungeon. Go east a room and defeat another enemy, then east another room. Defeat the dinosaur there and head outside.

Region 2 Towers

^l19|Dungeon map.

Go south two rooms, defeating an enemy in each room on the way. (Remember to get the fairy in the second of these rooms.) Then go east one room to find another such enemy. go east one room and north two. Defeat a fairy-yielding witch, then go east one room. You can either go north or south two rooms here. Going north makes you fight a minor enemy, and north makes you fight a fairy-yielding witch, each before reaching the door to the outside. An enemy also resides in that room.

Then go north three rooms (until you cannot go north any more) - you'll fight two enemies, one each in the last two rooms.

Go east two rooms, then south one. Defeat the witch there to find another fairy. Afterwards, go south to beat a minor enemy. Then go east a room to find another fairy-yielding witch. Go east one room and north two to find a fourth fairy-yielding witch. Go west one room for a minor enemy, then east one and north one to find another such minor enemy. Then go south and east a room. Go south from there to find the fifth fairy-yielding witch, then go south once more to find the room with the door going back outside. Feel free to defeat the enemy lying in the room to the south.

Region 2 Mountains

^l20|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

From the start, go west two rooms. Defeat the enemy in each, then go south a room. Defeat the enemy and take the arrow quiver from the east side, then go south another room. There, you'll beat up another dinosaur before continuing your trek southward. In the next room, you'll find another enemy. Defeat him and the pool of water nearby will suddenly turn blue. This water is a healing spring; if you stay in it long enough, you health is fully restored! Keep track of this, as usual!

Enjoy your stay, then go east a room, beat an enemy, and go south another. Take the arrow quiver, then go east a room. To the north, you'll find your boss, a dragon. As with the previous battle, abuse the arrow-firing mechanics to induce a rapid-fire effect by getting close and mashing B.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

From the start, go north a room. Defeat the enemy in there and head east two rooms. Defeat the dinosaur in there, too, then go south a room. Defeat the enemy here, then the ones in the rooms to the west and east if you desire. Go south (from the westernmost room) and you'll find two paths going east and west. Go along the west one to find an arrow quiver, then head as far east as possible to find, in the east alcove of the final room, another arrow quiver!

Go south a room and you should find another enemy. Defeat this one, then go south another room. Defeat the dinosaur, then notice how the water nearby turned blue. Get into this water to heal yourself fully after a few brief seconds, then go east a room, beat an enemy, then go north two rooms to beat enemies in each. Go south as far as possible now. You'll find an arrow quiver in this room.

Now, go east one room and exit it to the north. (Note that there are two enemies left, by the way. Go east from the previous room for one, then north from there for another.) This will bring you to the regional boss, a dragon. As with the previous battle, abuse the arrow-firing mechanics to induce a rapid-fire effect by getting close and mashing B.

Region 3 Overworld

^l21|Region 3's overworld.

Dungeon Type Dungeon Number Notable Contents
Castle 15 None
Cave 3 Camels
Tree 2 Hammers
Tower 6 Arrows
Mansion 3 Fairies
Mountain 2 Dragon boss

You'll start this deserty land in the northwest corner of the area. There are number of routes to take to the mountains, which are in the northeast and southeast corners of the map. As before, they're both pretty much the same, so pick however you wish. Completionism is of, also like before, relatively little benefit here beyond time being wasted. The only special dungeons to take note of are the mansions, one of which is south of the northeast mountain, and two are in the southwestern portion of the map. I suggest grinding for fairies there. You should easily have plenty of arrows by now - I think I had something like 200 by now? - but the towers are good for racking up lots more.

The quickest route I foresee begins with the cave near where you start in the northwest corner. Use the camel afterwards to cross the desert to the south, then take out the tree. Hammer down the fence there and go southeast. Take out the cave there, cross the northern desert with the camel, then, on the east side, take out the tree to the south. Use the hammer to go south to the mountain past the fence. Pffft. Like a fence would stop a dragon.

The route I recommend is a bit different. Feel free to do more as you wish. Anywho, take out the cave near the start and cross the desert. Take out the cavern there and go to the desert to the south. On the southwest side, you can go along from there eastward for the two mansions, in addition to three arrow-yielding towers. Once you're done there, take out the castle nearby. Go north to the cave and finish it, as well as the towers if you want arrows. Use the camel from the cave to cross to the northeast. Take out the mansion there for the final fairies, plus the tower if you want arrows. That's pretty much the main stuff - then just cross north to the mountain.

And, of course, completionism should be blatantly obvious. =P

As I stated before, the mountain dungeons don't seem to differ in structure or purpose - you'll still end up in the fourth region.

Region 3 Castles - Type #1

^l22|Dungeon map.
Completionism and speed-running are just about the same here.

Go east a room and defeat the enemy within to obtain the key to the door of the dungeon (possibly). Then take the nearby quiver of arrows and head south. Take the arrows from there, then go west a room and south another. Defeat the enemy there, which will give you the key if you didn't get it earlier, then go east and take out the enemy in the next room. In this same room should be your door.

Region 3 Castles - Type #2

^l23|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go south two rooms, defeating an enemy on the way, and, there, you'll find the skeleton soldier. Defeat him and you'll find the key to the dungeon door, which should be in this room.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go south one room. There, defeat the enemy and go west one room and south another. Pick up the quiver of arrows from there, then go east into the next room. There, you'll see an enemy. Defeat him and snatch up the key, then go through the doorway nearby.

Region 3 Castles - Type #3

^l24|Dungeon map.
Completionism and speed-running are just about the same here.

Go east a room and, there, take the quiver of arrows. Go north of there to find another room with an enemy. Defeat him to (possibly) earn the key. Take the nearby arrows, then go south and east a room. There, go south and defeat the enemy there, which will give you the dungeon key had you not gotten it earlier. Then go east a room and take out the simple enemy there and go through the door at the north side of this room.

Region 3 Castles - Type #4

^l25|Dungeon map.
Completionism and speed-running are just about the same here.

Go north a room and take the quiver of arrows, then go east a room. Here, defeat the skeleton soldier to obtain the key to the dungeon door. Feel free to go north into the next room to defeat an enemy if you're a completionist; otherwise, go through the door nearby.

Region 3 Caves

^l26|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go west a room and defeat the enemy there, then go south two more, defeating the enemies in each. There, go west and grab the arrows in the next room. Go south and defeat the enemy; he may or may not yield the key. Either way, go west one room, then south one. Defeat the enemy there; he should yield the key if you didn't get it earlier. Go west and south a room, defeat the enemy and grab the arrows there, then go east. Defeat the enemy in that room, then go through the doorway.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going south three rooms, defeating an enemy in each along the way. Go south one more room back to where you started, then east. Defeat the enemy there, then go south twice (or north twice) to find another. Go north (or south) twice and west, once more back at the starting room. Go west and defeat the enemy there, and the ones in the next two rooms to the south. Go west a room then, and take the arrow quiver within.

Go north three rooms, defeating an enemy in each. At the third, the enemy there may yield the key. If not, we'll get it later. Anywho, go west twice. Go north to defeat the enemy there, then south twice. Go east once from there and defeat the enemy. If you didn't have the key beforehand, it's made available to you now. Go west and south one room. Defeat the enemy there and snatch up the arrow quiver, then go east one room. Defeat the final enemy lying in wait there, then go through the doorway, back outside.

Region 3 Trees

^l27|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Once you start, go south one room and east one. Defeat the enemy there. If he drops the key, great. If not, we'll probably get it soon. Go east another room and, there, take out the enemy. Grab the quiver of arrows nearby, then go south a room. Defeat the enemy there. Go west and defeat the enemy in that room if you didn't get the key earlier, then go east two rooms (one if you didn't go). Defeat the enemy in there, then go through the door nearby.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Upon starting, go east three rooms. In order, you'll first be able to get some arrows, then defeat an enemy in each of following two rooms. There, go south a room to grab some arrows, then west. Defeat the enemy there to grab some more arrows. In the next room to the west, defeat the enemy there - he may drop the key. Afterwards, go east a room and south. Defeat the enemy in this room, then go west a room. Defeat the enemy there - if you didn't get the key earlier, this one should drop it. Continue west and defeat the next room's foe, as well as the one in the next room to the west. This final room should also contain the door.

Region 3 Towers

^l28|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going west a room. Defeat the enemy there, then go south a room. Defeat the three-arrow-requiring witch there and you'll obtain the key to the dungeon. Go west another room and defeat the enemy there. Grab the nearby quiver of arrows, too, if you can, then go south a room. There, you should find the door going back outside.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go north a room and slay the enemy there. Grab the quiver of arrows and continue north. Defeat the enemy in that room, then go west a room. There, you can find two quivers of arrows. Grab 'em and go west two more rooms. (Note that the first room you enter has the dungeon's door.) Then go north a room and defeat the enemy there. Go east a room to find another enemy. Defeat him, too, then grab the arrows nearby. Go north a room to find some more arrows, then go south one and east one. Defeat the enemy there to get the key to the dungeon. The door you use it on is one room west and one room south.

Region 3 Mansions

^l29|Dungeon map.
NOTE

If, during either text walkthrough, you find the key before you've fought all five Grim Reaper-type enemies, use the map above to more readily find your way out if you want to, though you'll miss out on a fair few fairies. Your dungeon start is the "S", the "F" and "K" mark potential key (and fairy) holders, and the "D" is where the door is.

QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go east a room and defeat the enemy there. Go south a room and defeat the one there, then go south another room. Defeat the enemy there, although it won't yield a fairy or the key. However, in the room to the west, you'll find an enemy that will! Go into the next room to the west and defeat the weak enemy, then go into the next room to the west, where you should find a quiver of arrows. Now go north two rooms and defeat the enemy there, then south two rooms. Go into the next room to the west and, there, you should find the fourth Grim Reaper-type enemy. If you still have not gotten the key, then the wielder of it is two rooms to the north or south. Defeat him and you should receive the key, if you haven't yet gotten it. Go through the door, which would be in the room with the fourth Grim Reaper, two rooms north/south of the first.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

First, go into the room to the east. Defeat the enemy there, then go another room to the east. You'll find an enemy there. Go south four rooms back to this same three-way one, defeating all of the possible enemies on the way. (Red-dot enemies cannot be killed except with a fire arrow, it seems.) Back at the three-way, go west a room. Go south three rooms - the room to the south of where you start notably contains a fairy-or-key-holding enemy. Additionally, the room in which you arrive contains a weak enemy, plus a quiver of arrows.

After grabbing the aforementioned arrows, go west a room and north one. Defeat the Grim Reaper-type enemy there for a fairy or a key, then go west. Defeat the enemy here. Go north a room and beat the enemy there. There is another enemy to the east, then one west and north, and another to the north of there. From there, go west another room. Defeat the enemy there and go north a room to find some arrows. Nice.

After getting them, go north two rooms. You'll find another Grim Reaper-like enemy. Defeat him for the key or a fairy, then go south two rooms. Go west a room and you'll find the fourth Grim Reaper-like enemy. Defeat him for the key or a fairy, then go north two rooms, fighting an enemy on the way. Defeat the final of those robed foes for a fairy or the key, and you should have the key by now. Continue north into the next room to deal with an enemy, then the next room to the north will still have the door in it. Use it.

Region 3 Mountains

^l30|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

When you begin, go west a room and defeat the lone enemy there. Afterwards, go south a room and east one. This room should contain the healing pool of water. Defeat the witch in the room and you'll be able to use it. Peruse it and remember its location if you need it later. Then go west a room and north three. In this last room, you'll find an enemy. Defeat him and go west a room. Then head west and south another room, where you'll find another enemy to slay. If you need to heal yourself, backtrack to the healing pool and do so. Otherwise, go west a room and northward.

Here, you'll find the dungeon boss, which is a dragon, as per the usual. As before, you can beat him quite easily, so long as you have healed before the battle. Go up close and just rapidly mash the B Button to rapidly fire off arrows, quickly killing the dragon before he can get much more than a hit or two in.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going east a room to defeat an enemy, then east (or west) two more to fight another. Drop to the south one room now and go west three rooms. You'll defeat enemies in each along the way. The third room is special in that, once you beat the witch in there, you'll purify the healing water here. Once it turns blue, you're able to step into it and use it to heal yourself back to full health. Remember this location in case you need to be healed later on.

Go west a room and south to find yet another enemy, beggin' for a beatin'. Sate that desire with a few arrows, then go east another room to do the same. Two more rooms to the east, you'll fight yet another enemy. Go south a room to find a weakling, alongside a quiver of arrows. Go south two more and fight the enemy there, then go north and east a room. Defeat that enemy, then go north. Yet another weakling resides here, so defeat him and take his arrows, then go east and south a room to find another weak enemy with some arrows.

Okay, I believe you've cleared the dungeon of all enemies, barring the boss. If you need to heal, go north twice, east once, north once, and west once to find the healing pool. Otherwise, go south and east a room. Exit this room to the north.

Yet again, you'll fight a dragon. Yet again, the preferable method is to, when fully healed, abuse the firing mechanics by getting close and mashing on the B Button until the boss is dead.

Region 4 Overworld

^l32|Region 4's overworld.

Dungeon Type Dungeon Number Notable Contents
Castle 2 Ladders
Cave 4 Tomahawks
Tree 2 Fairies
Tower 14 None
Mansion 8 Arrows
Mountain 1 Dragon boss

It's slowly beginning to get harder, isn't it? Where we used to have four or five dungeons for fairies has recently become more like two. Take note of this fact, as it means you'll need to grind more and more for the points necessary (20,000) for an extra life.

From where you start, the quickest route would probably be to take out the mansion and cave to the east of you. Cut down the forest and deal with the nearby castle, then use the ladder on the ledge to the south. Go east and you should quickly reach the mountain.

I recommend something a little different. Take out the mansion and cave to the east, as before. In addition, use the nearby tree dungeon - maybe you'll find some fairies? - and the two mansions near it if you want some more arrows. Go north and finish the cave there - we'll use the tomahawk momentarily. Cut down the forest to the southeast and take out the castle nearby. Invade the northern tower nearby and head along to the northeast corner to burgle that mansion for some arrows. Return to the southwest and cross the ledge with the ladder. Go south and cut down the forest, then deal with the cave and mansion on the other side. Go west and cut down those trees, then deal with the cave and mansion there, too. Head back east and, past the tower, you'll want to deal with at least the tree and mansion for fairies and arrows. Beyond that, do as you will for points and whatnot - the mountain is reachable, found east of the ledge we used the ladder on.

Completionism should be pretty easy to achieve here, difficulty-wise. Time-wise, though, it's not of much benefit unless you absolutely need some points to earn extra lives with, or maybe want the sparse few arrows in the minor dungeons.

Region 4 Towers - Type #1

^l33|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

This is about as quick as you'll ever get in this game - go east a room. There, defeat thw witch and, presto, there's the key. The door is also in this room.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go south a room and defeat the enemy there, then head east a room. There is a quiver of arrows there; grab 'em and use them in the room to the south to defeat another enemy. End the stage by going north two rooms, slaying the witch, then inserting the key she dropped into the door in this same room.

Region 4 Towers - Type #2

^l34|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

First collect the nearby arrows. Go north a room, then east or west another. Defeat the witch there and she should drop the key to the dungeon. Go south a room, slay an enemy there, then go south another room. Defeat the witch there and go through the door on the northern side of the room.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Snatch up the quiver of arrows nearby, then go south a room. There, you'll find some more arrows. Go east or west a room and defeat the witch there. Take note of the nearby door as you go north a room. There, defeat the lone enemy and continue on to find another witch. After beating her, she should drop the key. Go back south two rooms to use it.

Region 4 Towers - Type #3

^l35|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go south a room, defeat the enemy in there, then head east a room. Defeat the witch in that room and you should get the key to the door, which is also in this room.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go east a room and defeat the enemy there, then head north one room. Grab the quiver of arrows on the floor, then head west. Defeat the enemy in this room, as well as the room to the north. Go east one room and defeat the witch there. (Got water? =P) Once she drops the key, use it to open the door in this same room.

Region 4 Towers - Type #4

^l36|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going east or west a room to find the holder of the key. Defeat this witch and go south a room to find another lame enemy. Squish 'im, shoot 'im, do whatever you want to 'im. Then go south another room. Defeat the witch there and go through the northern door.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go south two rooms and, there, you'll find some arrows. Go east or west a room and defeat the witch there. Take note of the nearby door as you go north a room. There, defeat the lone enemy and continue on to find another witch. After beating her, she should drop the key. Go back south two rooms to use it.

Region 4 Caves - Type #1

^l37|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go south two rooms and, there, you should find the enemy who'll drop the key to the dungeon. Put a few arrows into him and he'll drop it. Take it and go east a room. Grab the quiver of arrows there and continue east a room. Defeat the enemy there, then go north a room. Defeat the enemy there, then go through the door in the corner.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go east a room and defeat the enemy there, then go east two more. Defeat the enemy there and grab the quiver of arrows. Go south to repeat this deed, then head east a room. Defeat the weak enemy there, then go south a room. Defeat the key-wielder there so that you may snatch it up. Go east a room to find a third quiver of arrows, then east another. Defeat the enemy here, and the one in the room to the north. In this latter room, having completed the dungeon fully, go through the door.

Region 4 Caves - Type #2

^l38|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go north or south two rooms - on either way, the first room you reach will contain an enemy. Defeat him and move on to the big one in the next room. Shoot a few arrows into his ... whatever, and you'll probably get the key when he dies. If he doesn't, it doesn't matter - the other known possibility is north two and east one room. Otherwise, go west two rooms and take the arrows there, then go south a room.

Head west a room. Defeat the enemy there, then the one in the room to the south. This latter enemy should yield the key if the aforementioned large enemy did not. Go west a room and south another afterwards. Defeat the enemy there, take the arrows, then go east a room. Defeat the enemy in there and go through the door nearby.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going north or south four rooms. This will take you back to where you started via a loop - there are enemies in each room along the way. Notably, the large enemy in the second room may yield the key. (If not, have no worries.) After returning to the start, go west a room and defeat the enemy there, then go south three rooms. You'll fight minor enemies in the first and last rooms you reach.

After doing this, go north a room and west another. Take the quiver of arrows there and go north three rooms. You'll fight a few enemies in the first two rooms, though the third should be open. Use it to go west a room and defeat the enemy there. Go south a room and defeat the large enemy there, who should yield the key if you don't have it already. Then go west and south a room. Defeat the enemy there and grab the nearby quiver of arrows.

Afterwards, go north three rooms - you'll fight an enemy in the second and third rooms you reach. Go west a defeat the enemy there, then go north four rooms for a loop. You'll fight minor enemies in the first and second rooms. After returning to the north/east/south room, go east twice, then turn north. In this room, defeat the enemy nearby and go through the door.

Region 4 Mansions

^l39|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going south two rooms. In each of them, defeat the weak enemy and grab the quiver arrows. Then go east a room to find another quiver of arrows. Go south a room and defeat the Grim Reaper-like enemy within to obtain the key to the dungeon. Go south and beat the enemy, then east to beat another. In this latter room, as pick up the quiver of arrows before going north. In the next room, you'll find some arrows in addition to the door going back outside.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going west a room to find a quiver of arrows, then return into the starting room. Go south two rooms. In each of them, defeat the weak enemy and grab the quiver arrows. Then go east a room to find another quiver of arrows. Go south a room and defeat the Grim Reaper-like enemy within to obtain the key to the dungeon. Continue south and beat the weakling. Go east a room to repeat the weakling-slaying. You'll also find a convenient set of arrows there. Take 'em and go south a room. Beat that enemy, then go south again. This room will contain a set of arrows in addition to the door leading back outside.

Region 4 Castles - Type #1

^l40|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go south a room and beat the enemy, then east to find another enemy. From there, head south and you find an skeleton soldier. Defeat him and he ought to yield the key to the dungeon's door. To find said door, go north twice. Then go east twice - in the first room you hit, you'll fight an enemy. From the second room, go south to find the door.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go north three times. Defeat the enemies in the first and third rooms you reach, then head east. There, defeat the enemy and go north three more times. You'll find some arrows in the second room and fight a skeleton soldier in the third room, which is likely to yield the dungeon key. Go east a room from there and defeat yet another enemy. So much violence...

Go north two more times to defeat two more enemies, then east one room. Head north thrice from there. You'll fight enemies in the first and second rooms you reach. In the third, go east and you'll find a minor enemy residing in the room with a quiver of arrows. Do the obvious to both (kill and steal), then go south three times, defeating an enemy in each room along the way.

At the third room, go east once and you'll find yet another enemy. Defeat him and go north a room to find another enemy. Defeat this final enemy to end the need to be completionist for now. Go north two more times, then west twice. This room should be have the dungeon door.

Region 4 Castles - Type #2

^l41|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go north a room and take the quiver of arrows, then head west twice. In both rooms, fight the enemies as you normally would, then go north in the four-way room (the second room you reach). In the next room, defeat the impeding enemy and go east. Take the key from the annoying-as-ever skeleton soldier, then head west three times. You'll likely fight enemies in each room, though the first room sometimes has no enemies. At the third room, where you can no longer go west, go north, defeat another minor enemy, and head east. Defeat the enemy there and go through the door.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go east three rooms. In each, you will fight an enemy. Slay them all and head north at the third room. Defeat the enemy there, and the one in the room to the east. Then head south a room. Defeat the enemy there and take the quiver of arrows, then go east and north one room each, defeating more enemies on the way.

Go east a room to find a quiver of arrows in the room just north of where you began. Go east again and again and you'll find more enemies to fight. Defeat them and, in the second room, go west a room and north two. Head west and beat the enemy there, and the one in the next room as well.

Then head south. Defeat the skeleton soldier there and you should get the dungeon key. Go west thrice, defeating enemies all the while, then turn north. There is another minor enemy to beat here. Go east a room and beat the final enemy of the dungeon. Phew! Feel free to peruse the nearby dungeon door.

Region 4 Trees

^l50|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

From the start, go north a room and east another. Defeat the enemy there for a key or a fairy, then go north. Head west a room from the four-way to find another key/fairy-wielding enemy. Return east to the four-way and go north a room. Defeat another such enemy there, then go south. Head east a room and take out the minor enemy there. Then snatch up the quiver of arrows nearby and head north and east a room to find a fairy/key-wielder.

Defeat him, then go south a room. Defeat the enemy there, and the one in the room to the east. This latter enemy should give you a fairy or a key. Then go west a room, north another, east one, and north one. Defeat the enemy here, who will give you the key if you've yet to obtain it. Then go east a room, grab the nearby quiver of arrows, and proceed through the door.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

From the start, go east a room and defeat the weakling there. Head south a room and take out the fairy/key-wielder, then go west a room. Defeat the weak enemy there, then go south to find a fairy/key-wielder. Go east a room, then south to find yet another of these enemies, then head north and east. You'll find a weak enemy there; defeat it and take the nearby arrow quiver.

Go north a room and east another. Defeat the fairy/key-wielder there, then go south a room. Defeat the enemy there, plus the one in the room to the east. This second enemy will possibly give you either a fairy or a key. Go south a room and east another, defeating enemies in both along the way. Go west two rooms and south one to find a minor enemy. Defeat him and go east a room for the final fairy/key-wielding enemy, plus the final enemy of the dungeon - if you don't yet have the key, this should solve that problem. Go east a room, take the arrow quiver there, and go through the door.

Region 4 Mountain

^l42|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Upon beginning, go north four fours. Yes, all four, and each will have an enemy to fight in it. Defeat them as you go (or somehow skip them). However, the Grim Reaper-like enemy in the fourth room must be beaten. Do so and you will have access to the healing pool nearby, which just turned light-blue. Get in there and heal up.

Then go south a room and east another. Deal with the enemy there, and the one in the room to the south. Go south one more room and you'll find a quiver of arrows. If you need to heal up, backtrack to the healing spring ("H" on the map above). From the arrow quiver, go east and north a room. There, you shall encounter the fourth dragon. Use the usual tactics - get as close as possible and mash the crap out of the B Button for the rapid-fire effect.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going east three rooms. You'll fight enemies in the first and third rooms, and are able to grab some arrows from the second. At the third room, go south once and take out the enemy there, plus the three in the rooms further to the east. At the north/west-exiting room, go west twice, then north as far as possible. After the four-way in which you began, you'll fight enemies in the following four rooms. In the last of these rooms, defeat the enemy there to purify the nearby healing spring. Stand there and enjoy the soothing waters...

Afterwards, go west three rooms, defeating enemies in each as you continue. At the third room, go south three rooms. You'll fight enemies in the first and second rooms, and find some arrows in the third. From there, go east twice. Take out the enemy there and grab the arrows, then veer off to the north. Defeat the enemies in the following two rooms to finish all of the enemies, barring a certain one...

First, go east and north a room to heal up at the healing spring. From there, go south and east, then south twice. Go east a room, then head north. There, you'll encounter the fourth dragon. Use the usual tactic to beat it - induce a rapid-fire effect by getting close and mashing the B Button.

Welcome to the major leagues, kid. This is where the game begins to shoot up in difficulty until the bitter end. Each enemy can usually take four arrows to defeat now. You will want to cherish those lives more than ever. This is a good place to readily grind for your life, quite literally. There are six dungeons total containing fairies. Each of these are caverns with those water monsters that just enjoy to fire from afar. Even the rapid-fire technique on a turbo controller is unlikely to stop you from being hit in those cases, but those four fairies for the life are worth it. I would wholesomely also recommend beginning to grind on enemies for points near the end of the dungeon, just before leaving - lives are worth 20,000 points.

Now, routes... The quick route is a little longer than the others insofar. First, go south and clear the two castles to get a hammer from each. Go east from where you started in the northwest corner and through the mansion. Use the hammer on the fence east of it, then defeat the mansion there. Go south and bash in that fence, too. From there, you need to make your way west, through the two mansions, cave, and tower. That will get you a boat. Go east and to the lake, then sail across to its southeast corner to find the lone mountain of the region.

My recommended route is definitely a bit extended. Go south and take out the two castles for their respective hammers, then go into the northernmost of the mansions. After you're done, if you want some extra arrows, go east, past the mansion, and take out the two tree dungeons. Otherwise, take out the fence between the two mansions and go south. Take out the mansion there, plus the cave next to it. You can also reach the cave next to the lake to the west through the narrow mountain path, I believe.

Go south from where the first cave was and take out the fence. Go around the mansion to the south, if you can, and head west to the tower. Take the boat from it and head to the south side of this lake to stash up on arrows from the trees. To the southeast, between the mountains, is a mansion dungeon. Finish it. On the other side, take out the two cave dungeons to get more fairies and lives. Finish up the nearby tree as well, if you want arrows. In the southwest corner, finish the tower dungeon for a boat. Use it on the large lake to the east. Sail to the island in the center to find fairies in the cave, and arrows (if you want them) in the tree. If you want more arrows, you can use the boat to sail to the northeast corner of the lake, where you'll find a tree dungeon. Once you're done with that, you can sail to the southeast corner of the lake to finish up the mountain dungeon.

Completionism here is strongly recommended, however. My recommended route above generally assumes ideal stats and prevents needless grinding in the side-dungeons - namely the mansions - to as much a degree as possible. You need points now. You need arrows now. These will become extremely critical factors for the brutal remainder of this game. Ideally, I want you to have at least two extra lives and approximately 150 arrows by the end of this region.

Region 5 Mansions - Type #1

^l44|Dungeon map.
Go south a room and defeat the enemy there. Grab the nearby quiver of arrows, then go west a room. There, you'll find an enemy. Defeat him and grab the key that he drops, then head north. Defeat the enemy there and grab the arrows, then go north. Defeat the enemy there, then go through the door nearby. (Completionists will want to kill the enemy in the room to the west/east first.)

Region 5 Mansions - Type #2

^l45|Dungeon map.
Go north a room and defeat the enemy there, then the one in the room to the west. (Go north a room before going to the west from the three-way if you're a completionist.) Go north a room and defeat the Grim Reaper-type enemy there to obtain the key. Grab it and the nearby quiver of arrows, then go north a room. Defeat the enemy there and go through the next door to the north.

Region 5 Mansions - Type #3

^l46|Dungeon map.
Go to the west or east and defeat the Grim Reaper-type enemy there. Then head south a room. Defeat the minor enemy there and grab the quiver of arrows nearby, then continue to the south. Defeat the enemy in the next room, also a Grim Reaper-type, and take the key he drops. For completionism, go east a room and defeat the enemy and grab the arrows near him. Otherwise, go north from where you got the key back into the room with the door.

Region 5 Mansions - Type #4

^l47|Dungeon map.
Go south a room and defeat the enemy there, then the one in the room to the west. Go north a room and defeat the Grim Reaper-type enemy there to obtain the key. Grab it and the nearby quiver of arrows, then go north a room. Defeat the enemy there and go through the next door to the north.

Region 5 Caves - Type #1

^l48|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go north or south two rooms. You'll fight a minor enemy in the first room you reach, and a fairy/key -holder in the next. Defeat him and go back north twice. Go west a room to defeat a fairy/key-holder, then go east two rooms and defeat the key/fairy-holder there. Then go north or south twice. You'll defeat two minor enemies, then need to turn east.

You'll find a third fairy/key-holder there. Defeat him and go south twice and east once. Each of these rooms contains an enemy - minor in the first two, but a fairy/key-holder in the third. After that, go north a room, defeat the minor enemy, then east. This will be the final of the key/fairy-holders, so, after beating him, you'll have the dungeon key. Go west two rooms, north one, east one, and north one more to find the door.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going east a room. There, defeat the fairy/key-holder, then go north or south four times, back to this room, defeating minor enemies in each along the way. Repeat this tactic in the room to the west of where you begun to the loop - you'll still fight enemies in every room, with a fairy/key holder in the second room.

Back at the four-way that was where you started, go west a room and defeat the fairy/key-holder there. Then go south twice and deal with two minor enemies in each. From there, go west a room to find a quiver of arrows and head north three times. You'll fight a minor enemy in the first room and a key/fairy holder in the third.

After that, go west a room and defeat the minor enemy there. Go south and defeat the key/fairy-holder there, then head west and north a room, defeating minor enemies in each along the way. Go north one more room to find the final key/fairy-holder of the dungeon - after winning against him, you should have the key. Then go east a room and north one, then west one. Defeat the minor enemy there and go back into the room to the east, then through the door.

Region 5 Caves - Type #2

^l49|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go east two rooms. You'll find a useful quiver of arrows in the first room, and the fairy/key-holder in the second. Deal with both as is appropriate, then go north a room. Defeat the minor enemy there and go west a room to find, lo and behold, another fairy/key-holder. Defeat him, go north a room, defeat another minor enemy, then continue north another room.

In that room, you'll find a fairy/key-holder. Defeat him, go west a room, defeat a minor enemy, then go south a room to defeat another fairy/key-holder. Take out the minor enemy in the room to the south, then go west for yet another fairy/key-holder. Then go south a room and west another, defeating the minor enemies in each as you go.

Go north another room and defeat the fairy/key-holder there, plus the one in the next room to the west, which, by now, should've given you the key. Go north a room and defeat the minor enemy in there. You'll also find the door here.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go east two rooms. Take the arrows in the first, and forcibly take the fairy or key from the enemy in the second. Then head north a room to deal with a minor enemy, then west another. Slay the key/fairy-holder there and head north a room. Defeat the minor enemy there, plus the ones in the room to the east (where some arrows also reside), then the one to the north of there.

Go west a room to deal with a fairy/key-holder, then west once more for a minor enemy. Go south for a fairy/key-holder, then south again for a minor enemy. Go north a room, then west. Defeat the minor enemy there, then the fairy/key-holder in the room to the south. Continue twice more to the south, defeating minor enemies in each along the way.

Then head south four times, back to this same four-way. You'll defeat minor enemies in the first and third rooms you reach, and a fairy/key-holder in the second. Back at the four-way, go west a room. Then head north three times. You'll deal with a minor enemy in the first room, then a fairy/key-holder in the second. (That should mean you have the key now - he's the last.) The next room contains a minor enemy, as well as the door to use.

Region 5 Castles - Type #1

^l51|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go east two rooms, defeating enemies in each along the way. Then just go north two. You'll find an enemy (and a door) in the first room. The next room contains the enemy who should be holding the dungeon key. Defeat the demonic skeleton, then grab the key. Also grab the nearby quiver of arrows before going south a room to the room with the door.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go north one room, east one, south one, and west two, defeating enemies in each new room along the way. The fourth room mentioned will also have a quiver of arrows in it. You'll find another room with an enemy and arrows if you go north a room. Continue north one more room and you'll find just an enemy. Defeat him and continue west until you can no more. In the first, you'll find the skeleton soldier who'll drop the key upon the defeat, in addition to a quiver of arrows lying nearby. Continue west for two more battles, then go back east to where you found the key. Go south a room from there and you'll find a minor enemy, plus the door to the dungeon.

Region 5 Castles - Type #2

^l52|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go west two rooms. In the second of these, you'll fight a lone enemy. Then turn south and defeat the enemy in that room, in addition to grabbing the quiver of arrows nearby. Go south one more time and deal with that dastardly skeleton soldier who absolutely refuses to share his key! =P After this, go north a room and west another to find the door to the dungeon.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go south three times. You will fight a couple of enemies on the way - one in the first and one in the third room you reach. Go west from there, then defeat the enemy. Go north another room to deal with another lone enemy before heading west. Defeat the enemy in there, who happens to be holding the key, then go south three times. You'll deal with enemies in each room. Grab the quiver of arrows in the third room (a four-way), then go west a room.

Here, you'll find the door to the dungeon - how convenient, but, if you want to do more, there's... well, more. Go south three times, defeating enemies in each room as you go, then head west. Go south four times and defeat enemies in each room, then go west. Here, go south four times. You'll deal with two enemies in the first two rooms, then you'll have to deal with the absolutely horrid task of taking a quiver of arrows from the floor in the third room.

Once you go south to the north/east/south-exiting room, go east twice and south once to reach the door where you'll leave this dungeon.

Region 5 Trees

^l53|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go east three times. You'll deal with a minor enemy in the first room, nothing in the second, and you'll find an arrow quiver in the floor of the third room. Go north a room and defeat the dinosaur there for a key. Go north, defeat the minor enemy, and head west. Take the quiver of arrows in the room here and go through the door nearby.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Whoa, geez, 70 arrows. O_o

Nice.

Go east a room and kill the enemy there. Then head north a room and west another, taking an arrow quiver from each. From there, go north a room and defeat the enemy. Take the quiver of arrows and head east three times. The first room you reach has an enemy and some arrows, the second has a door and some arrows, and the third has an enemy. From this room, go north twice. You'll find a lone quiver of arrows in the first room, and a dinosaur holding the dungeon key in the second. Go west a room and defeat the minor enemy, then take the arrows nearby. That's it - go east once, north once, and west once, back into the room with the door.

Region 5 Towers

^l54|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going north twice and dealing with some enemies in each room. From there, head east and deal with the feather-throwing witch, who may also have the key. If not, go east thrice. (You'll fight enemies in the first and third rooms.) At the four-way, go north twice. Defeat the enemy in the first room and take the nearby quiver of arrows, then go north again to deal with another witch that will have the key (if the other didn't). Go south twice and west thrice, then go south. Defeat the enemy there, then head east twice. Defeat the enemies in those rooms (plus, grab some arrows in the second), then go south. Defeat the enemy there and go through the door nearby.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go north three times, fighting enemies in the first two rooms as you go. In the third room, go east five times. You'll deal with enemies in the first, third, fourth, and fifth rooms on the way, plus find some arrows in the fourth. At the fifth room, go south three times, defeat the enemy, then go north twice.

Head west from there, then defeat the enemy. Head south twice. You'll deal with enemies in both rooms, the latter of which may hold the key the dungeon. Then go north (or south) twices. Head west three times from there to find enemies in the latter two rooms, the second of which may hold the key to the dungeon, that greedy... Well, you know. ;)

Go south twice and defeat enemies in both of those rooms, then go north once. From there, go east, south, east, and north. You'll fight enemies in each of those four rooms. You'll also find the door in the room where you went north, and some arrows in the last of the rooms. After clearing this li'l square out, you're free to go south and leave.

Region 5 Mountain

^l55|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH (NO HEALING SPRING):

Go south a room and defeat the enemy there. Then head either west or east twice. You'll fight enemies in each room along the way. From there, you can go north to an empty room, to the north of which is the boss. You can deal with him in the same way as is the usual - get close and mash the B Button for the rapid-fire effect.

QUICK WALKTHROUGH (WITH HEALING SPRING):

Begin by going south two rooms. You'll deal some impeding enemies in both rooms. Beat them, then head west. Defeat the enemy in this room and you'll make the healing spring activate. Step inside and let the water dye your shirt blue, indicating that you somehow have full health.

Then head west a room and north another to deal with some more enemies. Backtrack to the healing spring (south, then east) if you need to. Otherwise, head north a room, then again to find the boss. Defeat this dragon in the usual way - get suicidally close and mash the B Button.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going north a room and grabbing the quiver of arrows there. You can repeat this in the next room, but you'll probably want to dispatch the nearby enemy first. Then go west a room and south two more to deal with enemies in each of those three. The third room also notably has a quiver of ten arrows.

From there, go south once, defeat the enemy there, and head west three times. You'll again defeat enemies in each room, though they are worth little note. Go south from there to find another enemy. Defeat 'im and move on west a room. Defeat the hulking hulk-thing here to purify the water in the healing spring. Stand in there for a moment and let the water cure all of the various puncture wounds across your body that come from moronically shooting yourself. <_< >_>

Go west twice and defeat the enemies in each room, then go back east to the healing spring. Peruse it, then go south and defeat another enemy there, then head west three times. The first room notably features a quiver of arrows, while the next two contain enemies upon which to use those arrows. Do so valiantly, then head east a room. Head south from there for a bit, defeating three enemies along the way. Then head east a room.

If you need to use the healing spring (south twice, east once), feel free to use it - there aren't any enemies left in the dungeon except for the dragon. Otherwise, go north and slay the dragon. The usual method applies fairly well - get close, mash B, enjoy winning. -_-

This icy land will mark the end of your journey. Here, you will be forced to progress through two different mountains. First, you must go to the one in the center of the map to defeat the final of the six main dragons. Then, you go to the northwestern corner, where you will find the final boss and defeat him. That shall end the game.

The quick route will first begin with you taking out the nearby mansion dungeon. Then head east and take out the tree to the east, followed by the tower. Go north and take out one of the trees, then go cut through the trees to the east. Plunder the mansion for a tomahawk. Head north and cross the lake with the boat you got earlier. On the other side, head west and get the tomahawk from the mansion there, then go east, cut down the trees around the mountain, then go into the mountain.

After finishing the first mountain, head south and past the castle. Cut down the small forest to the east and head south. Take out a mansion for another tomahawk, then go as far north as possible. Deal with the tower for a boat, then go north, cut down the trees, and head west. At the fork, opt for the southern path. (You'll deal with two dungeons regardless, but we're out of tomahawks.) Then continue west to the lake, cross to its northwest corner, and deal with the mountain there, too.

My recommended route is actually the quick route, more or less. I would recommend, though, also taking out the castles as you reach them along the journey - most of them are easily reachable. The northernmost one will require a tomahawk (if coming from the west) from a mansion, or beating the tower to its east. Note that for future reference.

The main reason I recommend the shorter route, plus the castles (and caves if you want arrows), is to preserve your lives. This is the area where it is quite easy to lose them all, especially in those mansion and tower dungeons due to the common usage of rapid long-range attacks in there. You want to keep your lives and arrows high, but also want to build upon them when it is safe to. (Also, to the curious, the cave dungeons will yield a gross total of approximately 630 arrows! The castles yield, at max, about eight lives as well! =O)

Completionism is not recommended at all here, unless you're an exceptionally skilled player - in which case, why are you looking at this FAQ? =P It's too risky to put your lives and arrows in danger over a few measly points which, while they may be able to earn lives, that's with every 20,000 points. Not exactly ideal, is it?

Region 6 Caves

^l59|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Head south a room and take the quiver of arrows from there, then go east a room to repeat this act. One more room to the east will bring you in front of a water monster - defeat him and take the key he drops. Go south a room, defeat the minor enemy there, and take the arrows. Go south another room to find the door going back outside.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go south two rooms. In the first, you'll find a quiver of arrows; in the second, a quiver of arrows, plus a minor nuisance of an enemy. Exterminate it and go east a room to find some more arrows, then south a room for an enemy. One more room to the south and you'll find ... more arrows! Go east a room and defeat the enemy there for the dungeon key, then go east a room for some arrows. Go south a room and west another, defeating an enemy in each. Remember to get the arrows in the second room, too! Then head south a room. That's the door room. Feel free to go through it - but remember that there is an enemy and some arrows in the room to the east!

Region 6 Mansions - Type #1

There are so many known potential key-holders that I'll just give you the completionist walkthrough. Use the map above if you want to quickly navigate to the door ("D").

Go north a room and defeat the enemy there. Then head west five times. You'll find enemies in each of the rooms you reach. The first room will also have some arrows, and the fourth room's Grim Reaper-type enemy may hold the key. After the fifth room, go north and defeat the enemy there. Go west and defeat the enemy there, and also take the arrows. Then go north and east to another enemy, south and east to another, then go north.

Defeat the enemy there, then go north and east for some more enemies. Return to the four-way (west, south) and head east. Defeat the enemy there to possibly get the key, then head south. That room contains the door - if you want to use the key, feel free to. Otherwise, head east twice and defeat enemies in each room you reach.

Go north a room and defeat the enemy there, then head west to repeat this action. Then go north a room and defeat the enemy there to possibly get the key; the final enemy (go south, east, and north) will also be like that. So, after beating both of them, you should have the key if you didn't already. Go south from the latter enemy twice, then west twice to the room with the door.

Region 6 Mansions - Type #2

^l58|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go north two rooms. In the first, you'll find an enemy to beat. You'll find another enemy in the second, a Grim Reaper-type enemy - defeat him to get the key. Go west twice from there. You'll find some arrows in this room. Go west another room and defeat the enemy in there, then head through the door.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go north, defeat the enemy, then go north again to beat another who will also yield the key. Head east a room and defeat the enemy there, then go south twice, defeating enemies in each room along the way. There, go east and defeat the enemy, then head back west and south once more. Go west and beat the enemy there, then go west and north a room. Defeat the enemy, then go north, west, and south to find another enemy. Slay him and go south twice. Collect the quiver of arrows and go west. Defeat the enemy here, the room with the door. Go south twice for two final enemies before heading back to the door room (north or south twice) to use it.

Region 6 Trees - Type #1

^l60|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go south a room and defeat the enemy in there, then east another. Defeat the dinosaur here and he may drop the key. If not, continue on east another room. Defeat the enemy there and snatch up the quiver of arrows, then go south a room. From there, head west and defeat that dinosaur to get the key if you didn't. Then just head east two rooms to the door's room - defeat the dinosaur there and go on through.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go east three rooms. In the first room, you'll find a useful quiver of arrows; in the second and third, some minor enemies to deal with. After this, head south a room and defeat the enemy, then grab the arrows in the room. Head east three times. You'll fight enemies in each room along the way; the second notably may yield the key. The third room will also have some arrows inside it. After this, go south a room. Head west three times. In the first and third rooms, you'll fight dinosaurs, the first of which may yield the key (if the previous did not). The second room just contains a minor enemy. The third room, aside from the previously-mentioned dinosaur, also contains the door to go back outside. So, yeah, go back outside.

Region 6 Trees - Type #2

^l61|Dungeon map.
Go south a room and defeat the enemy there, then head west a room. Defeat the dinosaur found there, who may drop the key. Go south a room and deal with the minor enemy there. This room contains the door, so, if you want to (and can) exit, feel free to do so. Go east or west a room to find another dinosaur, who will have the key if you didn't get it earlier. Go back west or east a room to the door's room. Completionists will want to go south a room for a free, no-strings-attached quiver of arrows. Otherwise, go through the door.

Region 6 Towers - Type #1

^l63|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go west a room and defeat the enemy within. From here, go north and south a room from the four-way to find two witches, each with the potential to hold the key. After defeating them, grabbing the key as applicable, return to the four-way and head south twice. Defeat the enemies in each room (the first room you reach may yield a key), then go east twice for more of 'em. Go north twice to find another, then head east for one more.

If you already have the key, go north two rooms to deal with a minor enemy before the door room; if you don't, you'll need to go south, defeat the witch, then go south again to the door. Either way, leave.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Begin by going south three times. You'll deal with a witch in the first room, who may yield a key, then a minor enemy in the second. In the empty third room, go west a room and defeat the witch there, who may yield the key. Then go west another room and defeat the enemy there. Take the quiver of arrows, then go north a room and east another to find another quiver.

Head west a room and another to find a minor enemy. Head north a room, then east one, dealing with minor enemies in both. To the south, in that room, is a witch. Defeat her to possibly get the key if you've yet to get it. Then head north a room, east one, and north (or south) two. Head east, defeat the enemy, and head north. Defeat the enemy in there, too.

Then go east. Head south three times, defeating enemies in each room as you go. At the end, go east from the four-way to another minor enemy. Head south twice. You'll find a witch in the first room who will yield the key (if you don't have it yet). In the next room, you'll find the door. Feel free to go through it, but do note that there is one more enemy in the room to the south!

Region 6 Towers - Type #2

QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go west a room, defeat an enemy, then west another. Defeat the witch there and you may get the key to the dungeon. Go north from there and defeat the enemy, then grab the nearby container of arrows. Go east and defeat the minor enemy there, too. Go north and defeat the witch in the next room for the key, if you don't have it yet. Then go south a room and east another. Take out the enemy in there and go through the door there.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go west three times. In each of the rooms you reach, you will fight an enemy. Notably, the second room you reach contains a witch who may yield the dungeon key. At the end, go south and defeat the enemy there, then snatch up the quiver of arrows. Head east three more times. The second and third rooms will contain enemies; notably, the witch in the second room will yield the key (if you don't have it yet). At the end, go west and south a room. Defeat the enemy there, then go west three times. You'll deal with minor enemies in each room. The first two rooms additionally have arrows to grab, and the third room has a door to go through. So go through.

Region 6 Castles - Type #1

^l65|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go south a room and defeat the skeleton soldier there to get a fairy or the key. Go east a room and defeat the minor enemy there, then head south. Defeat the skeleton soldier there for a fairy or the key, then go south two more times. You'll find some arrows in the first room, and another minor enemy in the second.

From there, head east and defeat the skeleton soldier for another fairy or a key. Go east and defeat the minor enemy, then head north three times. You'll find a skeleton soldier (yielding a fairy or key) in the first room, plus a minor enemy in the second. The door is in the third room. If you have the key, feel free to go on through.

If you don't have it, go east a room and defeat the enemy there, then take the nearby quiver of arrows. Go north and south one room from this four-way to find skeleton soldiers in each room, both of which will yield either a fairy or the key. If these are the last skeleton soldiers to fight, you'll definitely have the key after this - go back to the four-way and west a room to the door.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go north a room and defeat the minor enemy there, then go south two rooms and defeat the skeleton soldier there to get a fairy or the key.

Head south four times and defeat each enemy on the way back to this crossroads.

If these are the last skeleton soldiers to fight, you'll definitely have the key after this. Also note that, from the room east of the north skeleton soldier, there is another minor enemy. From him, go back to the four-way and west a room to the door.

Region 6 Castles - Type #2

^l66|Dungeon map.
QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go north a room and grab the quiver of arrows there, then go east a room. Defeat the enemy there for either a fairy or the key. Go west three times now - the second room will just have a minor enemy, but the third has another skeleton soldier with either the key or a fairy. Go east and south to find another such enemy.

Then head north, west, and north a room to find a minor enemy. Defeat him and go west. Defeat the skeleton soldier there for either the key or a fairy, then head east twice to find another such skeleton soldier. Exorcise him, then head east. Defeat the minor enemy there, then go north. (Re?)Kill the skeleton soldier there to find the key or a fairy. Go south, then west as far as possible, north, and east. This room contains the door, plus the final key/fairy-wielder, so you'll have the key after this. Defeat 'im and go through the door.

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go east two rooms and defeat the minor enemies in each room, then go back west twice to the start. Head north a room and grab the quiver of arrows there, then go east a room. Defeat the enemy there for either a fairy or the key. Go west three times now - the second room will just have a minor enemy, but the third has another skeleton soldier with either the key or a fairy. Go south, defeat the minor enemy, then head east to find another skeleton.

Then head north, west, and north a room to find a minor enemy. Defeat him and go west. Defeat the skeleton soldier there for either the key or a fairy, then head east twice to find another such skeleton soldier. Exorcise him, then head north for a minor enemy. Defeat it and go south a room and east another. Kill the minor enemy there, then go north. (Re?)Kill the skeleton soldier there to find the key or a fairy. Go south, then west as far as possible, north, and east. This room contains the door, plus the final key/fairy-wielder, so you'll have the key after this. Defeat 'im and go through the door.

Region 6 Mountains

^l67|Dungeon map.
NOTE

As moronic and uninspired as it might seem, both the central mountain and northwestern mountain of the sixth region have the same map to a "T". Each walkthrough below will cover how to reach the boss himself, then there will be a separate section just after the walkthroughs to cover the bosses, as they do differ slightly.

QUICK WALKTHROUGH:

Go south two times to find an enemy to fight. Do so and go west, defeat another enemy, and go west once more. Defeat the enemy lurking around there to purify the healing pool. Step in it and ease your wounds, then go north. Defeat the enemy there and return to the healing pool if you were damaged. Otherwise, go north for a bit to the large hallway marking the dragon...

COMPLETIONIST WALKTHROUGH:

Go north four times and take out the enemies in each room along the way. From there, go east a room, defeat the enemy there, and snatch up the arrows. Go north five more times from there - you'll find four enemies, one each per four rooms, followed by a quiver of arrows in the fifth. Go east and defeat the minor enemy there, then continue east. Go south and defeat the enemy there, then head north. Defeat the enemy here and go west to find the healing pool - defeat the nearby enemy, then use the pool to heal your wounds. Go north and east, defeating minor enemies in each. Then go west and south, back to the pool. Now that all of the enemies are defeated, you can go north for a bit and BUST THAT DRAGON! =P

CENTRAL MOUNTAIN DRAGON:

The dragon you find the center mountain of the sixth region is little different from the dragons you are used to. It will take the longest to beat thus far, though, requiring thirty normal arrows or six fire arrows. The usual tactic still works - get close and mash the B Button, though I would strongly recommend coming in at a high level of health, just in case. This is, after all, twice the trouble the first region's dragon was!

NORTHWESTERN MOUNTAIN'S KING DRAGON:

In all honesty, the king dragon, the final boss, differs little from the previous dragons. He does require a whopping 45 arrows to be killed, though. But, again, if you're fully healed, it shouldn't be too hard a task. Get close, and then mash the crap out of the B Button. You might get hurt two or three times, but the fourth is unlikely to come.

After winning, enjoy the ending!

CONGRATULATIONS! You have beaten Dragon Buster II: Yami no Fuuin!!
