While I do write all of my guides for free, it does take a lot of time and effort to put them together. If you're feeling generous and want to show your appreciation, I am gladly accepting donations. I don't know exactly what the donations will be used for, but just know that you would definitely be helping me make more quality FAQs! Even the smallest donation amounts are appreciated, and they are a great way to say how much you appreciate the work I do. Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers the Sega Master System game known as GP Rider. GP Rider is a game that, like many other SMS games, was developed by Sega and released for their Master System around 1990.

It has been over twenty years since the release of this game. And yet, like many dozens of SMS games, it has gone uncovered by GameFAQs in that entire time. The FAQ Contributor Boards, including myself, of GameFAQs have taken it upon themselves to complete at least one FAQ for each and every Master System game, among other consoles.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Game Controls

There are two different control schemes you can use. If you go under the Controls menu from the title screen, you can choose the control settings for the different players. Config One is better for people who prefer the typical Mario Kart-esque system of racing, whereas Config Two is better for people who prefer to imagine things in a top-down view.

Button Resultant Effects (Config One) Resultant Effects (Config Two)
D-Pad Up Shift up a gear Accelerate and gain speed
D-Pad Down Shift down a gear Slow down and brake
D-Pad Left Turn left Turn left
D-Pad Right Turn right Turn right
1 Button Slow down and brake Shift up a gear
2 Button Accelerate and gain speed Shift down a gear

Pre-Race Details

Game Mode Descriptions

  • Arcade: This is basically a trial run of the game you can play to get the grip of things.

  • Tournament: Here, you basically pick and choose from the tracks (except the Arcade one, though it is available if you choose nothing) to form a tournament-style competition between you and the computer or the other player. You can choose any of the tracks you want.

  • Grand Prix: You'll play through all of the tracks in a specific order. You'll gain points against the other AI competitors as you do better and, after all fifteen races, you'll see how good you did.

Track Selection

This comes next, as applicable. It's only really available when playing in Tournament mode - in the other modes, the track is chosen for you. You should see the Tracks section for further details.

Bike Customization

(After choosing everything to do in the customization, you get to race!)

When playing the Arcade track, you pretty much just get one thing to customize: the type of engine to use. The type of engine determines more than just speed. With an automatic transmission, you'll have to focus less on your speed in shifting gears - however, that means you need to let off of the accelerate button when going around turns. Manual transmissions limit your speed at a maximum point per the six gears - if you want more speed, you can shift up in gears. Personally, it is better to use the manual transmission, as there is no speed difference, and the control is greater when using it.

As for as high or low goes, that merely affects the maximum speed you can have in a given gear. It is generally better to use "low" on areas with plenty of turns, and "high" on areas with a lot of straightaways.

ARCADE ENGINE TYPES AND TOP SPEEDS
Engine Type Top Speed
Gear 1 Gear 2 Gear 3 Gear 4 Gear 5 Gear 6
Automatic: High 83 km/h 139 km/h 195 km/h 227 km/h 259 km/h 291 km/h
Automatic: Low 83 km/h 123 km/h 171 km/h 203 km/h 227 km/h 259 km/h
Manual: High 83 km/h 139 km/h 195 km/h 227 km/h 259 km/h 291 km/h
Manual: Low 83 km/h 123 km/h 171 km/h 203 km/h 227 km/h 259 km/h

When you play in Tournament or Grand Prix modes, things are bit more complicated. You can choose between your engine type, gear, and your tires.

Your engine seems to provide influence towards acceleration speeds and stability inversely - that is to say, as one gets better, the other gets worse.

ENGINE DETAILS
Engine Time to reach 291 km/h Relative Stability
Lean ~18.0 seconds 3 / 3 (best)
Medium ~15.0 seconds 2 / 3 (middle)
Thirsty ~12.5 seconds 1 / 3 (worst)

Your gear works much the same as in Arcade mode. The type of gear determines more than just speed.

As for as "wide" or "close" goes, that merely affects the maximum speed you can have in a given gear. It is generally better to use "close" ("low") on areas with plenty of turns, and "wide" ("high") on areas with a lot of straightaways.

GEAR TYPES AND TOP SPEEDS
Gear Type Top Speed
Gear 1 Gear 2 Gear 3 Gear 4 Gear 5 Gear 6
Automatic: Wide 83 km/h 139 km/h 195 km/h 227 km/h 259 km/h 291 km/h
Automatic: Close 83 km/h 123 km/h 171 km/h 203 km/h 227 km/h 259 km/h
Manual: Wide 83 km/h 139 km/h 195 km/h 227 km/h 259 km/h 291 km/h
Manual: Close 83 km/h 123 km/h 171 km/h 203 km/h 227 km/h 259 km/h

Your tire is primarily used to affect stability in certain weather. A tire made for dry weather will be horrible and unstable on wet roads, for example, and a tire for wet weather will make too much contact with the road and slow you down... Or at least physics says it should. -_-; In the end, all this affects is turning stability. You want your tire to match the weather conditions appropriately.

The Race Itself

Race Types

  • Qualifier Race: This is a single-lap race used to determine position. The faster you go, the higher your position.

  • The Main Race: This is the actual race. Here, you'll go around the track a number of times in competition with other players. This is a competition for first place. At the end of the race, you'll receive points to rank you across the other races you'll do, looping between qualifiers and main races.

Racing

(Just so you know, if you're playing alone, you're on the bottom half of the screen. For some unfathomable reason, Sega put the AI at the top.)

After the clock goes down, you get to begin racing. Depending on your control scheme (see the Game Controls section for more details), you will either use the 2 Button or Up on the D-Pad to accelerate. You will gain speed just by holding down that button. However, if you're using a manual transmission, you'll need to shift up gears to actually increase your maximum speed. There are six gears in all. If you need to downshift, you'll end up also decreasing your maximum speed. Automatic transmissions don't have this extra bit of work and will shift gears depending on your speed. If you're looking to repeatedly upshift, you want to try looking at your speed and compare it with the maximum speed with your engine - see the Bike Customization section for more.

Now, why upshift or downshift? I mean, heck, it's a race for first place - wouldn't going faster make you win? Well, no. If you go 291 km/h around a hairpin turn, like on the Italy course, you'll probably fly right off the track into some tree or another fool who crashed there. This will greatly slow you down, so you need to slow down ahead of time to make sure you don't fly off the edge. Most turns under 30 degrees on a map can be taken without slowing down, though.

The race will just go around and around the track several times. The races have not real features on them, so just go around... and around... After the number of laps needed to complete is completed, you'll continue on to the next step of the process. That's the main race when coming from a qualifier, or the standings and a qualifier if coming from a main race.
