Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers the GameBoy game known as Puzznic. Puzznic is a game based upon matching objects of matching types so that you end up clearing the field. It's not a particularly unique concept in gaming, admittedly, but it is nevertheless quite an addictive one. It was released by Taito in 1990, although only in Japan, for the GameBoy.

It has been over twenty years since the release of this game. And yet, like hundreds of GameBoy games, it has gone uncovered by GameFAQs in that entire time. The FAQ Contributor Boards, including myself, of GameFAQs have taken it upon themselves to complete at least one FAQ for each and every GameBoy game, among other consoles.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Game Basics

The general concept of the game is pretty easy to understand. Your main goal is to make all blocks that look alike come together to disappear. You can make as many blocks as is needed disappear. By using proper strategy, you can make three or four blocks disappear at once just by landing that one block in a proper manner.

To move blocks around, you will use the D-Pad. When the cursor is hovering over the tile, press and hold either the A or B Button, then use the D-Pad to drag. Gravity is present in this game, so remember this - blocks will fall if nothing is beneath them. Once a block is moved so that two or more are touching each other, they will disappear and you'll earn points - more blocks, more points. After removing all of the blocks from a level, you get your score, password for the next level, then you go to the next level.

There is one special maneuver you need to be aware of. I will reference it several times throughout the Walkthrough, starting in the late 40's. The game will allow you to move blocks even while others are still falling. For a prime example of this, look at the Level 58 walkthrough, where I require it on the first move. When you have a block "in cursor", so to speak, and drag it over a ledge, so long as you hold down the A or B Button, the cursor follows that block. If you pass by a block you want (or, more often, need) to drag down, too, to help complete a set or something, let go of A/B as you pass it, then use the D-Pad and the A/B Buttons as usual to drag that block. This is a useful technique (though whether it was intended is unknown to me), because the game won't process the "remove matched blocks" sequence until all blocks have stopped moving. I will reference this technique as little as possible, as it can be annoying and difficult to do at times, but it is quite possible and useful.

Walkthrough

Some Notes (READ!)

Because of the tendency of levels to use differing types of blocks, yet the same layout and solution, I will first diagram the level. This will basically use numbers to designate block types, and "#" to show off walls. Got that? It'll be easier for you to use the default palatte the game gives you for the blocks (pyramids, crosses, etc.) rather than switch to the numerical layout, as it'll be easier to follow. (I derived the numbers from their designations during my playthrough, so expect a bit of oddity in that.) If you have trouble viewing the diagrams, it may help to copy-and-paste them to an external word processor (e.g. Notepad, Wordpad, Metapad, Microsoft Word), use a fixed-width font (e.g. Courier, Courier New), and increase the font size until you're comfortable.

As for terminology that I'll use to designate blocks, here are the "imprecise terms" to which I don't give particular directions:
  • Topmost: The highest of the set.
  • Bottommost: The lowest of the set.
  • Leftmost: The furthest left of the set.
  • Rightmost: The furthest right of the set.
  • Center/Central: In the approximate center of the set.
  • Top-leftmost: Closest to the top-left corner of the set.
  • Top-rightmost: Closest to the top-right corner of the set.
  • Bottom-leftmost: Closest to the bottom-left corner of the set.
  • Bottom-rightmost: Closest to the bottom-right corner of the set.
  • Middle: The middle of a set of blocks. This is not usually the exact middle, like, for example, the middle "5" may refer to just the "5" that is between the other two "5" blocks, even if it is one space from one, and five from another.
