Introduction

Welcome to another FAQ of mine. This one covers the SMS game known as Rygar. Rygar, at least from my first impressions, looks to be a difficult and entertaining 2D platformer, seemingly centered in a medival time about a warrior, going across the region and killing all of the evil and vile monsters dwelling within it. It seems you do so by retrieving the sword of cross from the leader of the monster army.

Or something like that. I can't read Japanese. >_>

This game was apparently made by Salio in 1988 for Sega's Master System. In the twenty-five years hence, not a single complete FAQ has be written for it, until now. I, along with other members of the GameFAQs FAQ Contributor boards, have taken it upon themselves to write at least one guide for every Sega Master System game out there and, at least at the time of writing, we're very close! ^_^

And, so, that's more or less how I came upon this came. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; I hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Controls

Button Resultant Effects
D-Pad Move around (Left/Right).
Duck and crouch (Down).
Climb up and down ropes (Up/Down).
Use with 1 Button to aim attacks.
1 Button Attack. Use with D-Pad to attack in a certain direction. (Down is a low attack.)
Use with Up when you have the fifth powerup for circular attacks.
2 Button Jump.

Game Description

Rygar is a fairly simple game to describe, actually. The game takes place in a 2D platformer format - like with Super Mario Bros., MegaMan, and MegaMan X - across a number of levels. Your goal is merely to make it to the end of each level, defeat the boss there, then progress on to the next round. However, your journey there is fraught with danger.

Your main danger comes in the form of enemies. There are a number of enemies in the game, who I will describe to you as is needed during the Walkthrough. The majority of them can be readily beaten in a single strike of your weapon. Your weapon is thrown with the 1 Button. It is a projectile that will go a short distance. It goes in the direction of your facing if you don't use the D-Pad; with the D-Pad, you can make it also go up. If you have the fifth power-up enabled, this will actually execute a semicircular strike around you.

These enemies will all kill you in one hit, or upon being touched. That is what makes this game excruciatingly difficult. It is entirely possible to continue on, but you must be extremely aware of your surroundings. The enemy swarms are also randomized during the course of the game, so no particular walkthrough beyond general descriptions of the enemies nearby is given.

The other danger is in the environment itself. There are a number of bottomless pits in this game and, as one could only expect, falling down them hurts. It will kill you. This applies also to the portions of the game in which you must climb ropes - you cannot be lazy just by jumping down. You can jump over bottomless pits by pressing the 2 Button when moving.

^s1|Power-up holder. There are a number of power-ups in this game. If you look in the top-right corner of the game screen, you will find that there are five square slots. These are meant to contain power-ups. Power-ups can be found at random during the levels, or in containers like the one pictured to the right, which you can attack to open. A small number of power-ups are also wielded by a number of enemies, but this is usually for minor power-ups. Here are the power-up effects I know of:

  • The first power-up will approximately double the throwing range of your weapon.

  • The second power-up seems to have no noticeable effect. It may increase the size of the weapon, but that's just me.

  • The third power-up seems to increase your jumping power, at least as far as distance is concerned. It does for sure allow you to kill enemies by jumping on them.

  • The fourth power-up is one I've actually yet to find.

  • When the fifth power-up is held, if you press the 1 Button in conjunction with Up on the D-Pad, your attack goes in a semicircle around you, only not attacking what is below you!

  • There are also a number of other minor power-ups. A fair few serve only to earn you points, but there is a dark-blue one with a "T" on it that will boost your timer by twenty seconds. There is also another that looks like a Christian cross and will grant you temporal invulnerability, a ton of points, and the ability to kill any enemy you touch for a brief time.

Your main five power-ups, however, only last until you die. When you die, regardless of whether you died by being touched by a monster, falling in a pit, or being hit by Death. (Death appears when you run out of time. He'll fly across the level rapidly and, if you touch him, you lose a life.) Lives are seemingly earned by gaining points, and the game ends when you lose all of your lives or beat every level in the game. There are five levels, named "Rounds", in all.

As for when lives are earned by points, here are the point values I know of:

  • 50,000 points
  • 200,000 points
  • 500,000 points
Beyond that, I've hit somewhere around 1,000,000 points and not seen another life. You shouldn't really be able to earn much more than 750,000 in a single playthrough, anyways, unless you cheat and grind.

Walkthrough

Just a Note...

As minor as it is, I still need to say it.

The enemy swarms are randomized. I can give general descriptions of enemies and the whereabouts of where they appear, but, regarding enemies, that's about it. The randomness also seems to include the power-up containers and random appearances of power-ups. Please try to note this when reading the Walkthrough.

Also, for the record, I will divide up the areas within the rounds within the Walkthrough with lines like...

...that thing above here. The individual areas are found by going through what seem to be doorways in the round. You'll understand as time goes on and you use the Walkthrough.

Round 1

In this first area, go right and defeat some humanoid enemies. They seem only focus on running into you, so just smack 'em and move on. As you proceed over the cavern below, you'll also find that some dragons are dropping soldiers upon you. The soldiers themselves can be beaten with a simple smack, though you may want to beware their leaping nature. The dragons won't attack beyond the deployment of enemies, so smack them only if you feel like it, but note that you'll need to use Up on the D-Pad, preferably - jump-attacking is a bit risky, as the dragons tend to fly in groups.

Continue rightward. Eventually, you'll see some ground-hugging red enemies - I didn't see them until I passed the tree. For these, you'll need to duck and attack (Down + 1). You'll soon see a red ledge that you'll need to jump over with the 2 Button, obviously. Continue on rightward. Not much further past the red ledges, you'll see a gap in the ground. Jump over it and continue.

Dragons and red ground-hugging enemies are still swarming you. It'll stop shortly. Continue right and over the next gap, then progress into the next area.

Proceed rightward in the second area to soon fight some more gray humanoid enemies you saw earlier. When you see the gap in the floor, go into it. Whatever those spike-looking things are actually are safe to touch, so don't worry. Proceed to the right in this lower cave and up out of the next hole. Note that you can throw your weapon upward around here to strike enemies above.

As you head rightward from the hole, you'll begin dealing with the dragons/soldiers deployment combos. As before, try to attack the soldiers before the dragons, and never jump when these enemies are near. Continue right and over the next gap, then the next one.

As you exit the cavern, you'll probably begin encountering more of the ground-huggers. Again, use Down and "1" to beat 'em. Continue rightward and you'll begin dealing with more dragons - as before, soldiers before dragons. Go right some more and, just left of a tree, should be a gap in the path. Go down into it and proceed rightward. You'll mostly deal with just grayish humanoid enemies on the way, as before. Feel free to throw your weapon through the roof to kill some others, though.

As the upper area opens up to you, jump up there. You'll probably deal with a small swathe of ground-hugging enemies as the dragon/soldier duos continue to rain upon you. Regardless, proceed right, past the enemies, to the next area.

The third area... Proceed right evermore and you'll soon start dealing with some yellow goblins. Later on, these flying enemies will become more difficult to deal with by shooting fireballs, but, for now, you can typically just strike at them like the dragons. Further right, you'll also deal some yellow humanoids that can extend their arms quickly to hurt you. It'll be best to deal with them from afar, especially if you already have the first power-up.

There is another enemy that'll come up periodically during the level, and it's a tough one. It'll burrow through the ground, killing you if you're over it, and rise up onto the upper level. (They come from the lower level, obviously.) They will then shoot fireballs that are quite likely to hit you. To deal with these fire cannons, as I call them, you'll need to get just past them when they start burrowing, then turn around towards them and crouch and attack. You'll be thankful later.

So, anywho, continue on right, past some humanoids, then some flying goblins for a bit. You'll deal with the fire cannons' rising up as you leave the cavern behind you. As you continue to the right, you'll also see a gap in the ground. This gap will periodically launch fireballs from below. Unless you're lucky enough to leap on one, you'll be killed upon touching them. Time your jump across the gap carefully.

Past the gap, you'll deal with more flying goblins as before. Around now, they'll begin to dive down at you, so be careful. Jump over the gap further right, still bewaring of the fireballs. Past it? More flying goblins and more yellow humanoids and more fire cannons. Deal with them each in their respective methods. The fire cannons are usually negligible until they've actually risen up, so take out the flying goblins first.

Continue rightward and into the cavern. You'll soon hit the next area.

In this fourth area, proceed to the right, dealing with more flying goblins and fire cannons as you go. If you've gotten the third power-up by now, it might be a nice idea to think about jumping off of the fire cannons and attack the goblins in mid-air. It's risky, but it's better than dealing with seven or eight enemies at once!

Anywho, continue rightward. Past some more humanoid enemies and other assorted enemies from this waterfall area - and I mean a fairly long while - you'll find that the area turns into a number of platforms. In this portion of the level, you'll want to first bounce on the enemies on the ledge in front of you. If you kill them, stay there - if you don't have the third power-up, then just move on. Since the only real threat are the flying goblins, feel free to try dodging and killing them at your own discretion. Mid-air strikes also seemed to work really well for me.

As you hit the approximate midpoint of the ledge sequence, you'll see a tree-like structure. Defeat the humanoids on this platform and continue on rightward as before. You'll soon reach the main ledge, which, after a few more flying goblins (more likely than not), you'll proceed onto the next area.

The fifth area consists of a rope-climbing sequence. Here, you will jump onto the rope and climb down.

As you climb down, silvery frogs will appear on the left and right, and flying enemies will periodically appear from above. Here, you'll want to climb down until you're about level with the silvery frog - make sure it can't hit you with its tongue, though! Defeat the flying enemy above you as applicable, then swing right or left and smack the silvery frog a good one. Repeat this strategy until you reach the bottom. Leave the rope there and continue right into the sixth area.

Here, you'll begin dealing with your bane for perhaps the remainder of the level - the rolling bugs that come from beneath you. They will typically reside in the caverns and, when you're down there, they can be pretty easy to deal with - smack and move on. However, if you are on the upper level, it's a bit tougher. They can literally burrow through the ground to come up to the upper level, hurting you if you're there when they burrow up, then roll about as usual. You'll probably want to try to use jumps to bypass them as they burrow, then turn around and crouch-attack them to get them just as they come up. Trust me, taking these out will greatly benefit you, life-wise.

They quickly begin the area in large numbers, but you must deal with them - not of necessity from the game itself, but probably a lack of the superb skills you'll need otherwise. As you continue heading right and out of the cave, you'll also deal with some yellow leapfrog-like enemies - they usually remain still until some arbitrary point, at which time they leap at you and try to kill you. You'll be able to kill them from afar if you have the first power-up, or possibly jump-dodge-stomp with the third, but you'll have to rely on good-timed strikes otherwise.

Continue on to the right, dear reader. When the gap in the ground appears, between the tree with the bat and the red ledge, bypass it. Defeat the bat - usually you can get 'im as you go down - and proceed further right. You'll need to jump over the next gap as you proceed back into the cave. You'll deal with more and more red rolling bugs as you go. Just keep smashing through them.

Eventually, to the right will be a gap in the ground. Don't leap down there, tempting as it is. Keep on moving to the right along the upper path. Continue to deal with the red rolling bugs as before, but also beware the interspersed yellow leapfrogs, too. There isn't a whole lot to mention otherwise about this section. Continue rightward and you'll eventually reach the door to the next area.

The final area of this round consists of a boss fight! This boss is relatively simple. If you get too close, the boss will sometimes punch you, and he can also leap around at times. As with any other enemy, you'll be killed if he touches you. He, however, can take several hits to beat. If you got the first and/or fifth power-ups from the main level, you should be fine with attack. All you really must do is hit him around five times, which can usually be done before he gets a move in or two. What I, personally, did was stand still and aim at him. Whenever he jumped, he seemed to miss me, and he didn't a chance to actually punch me.

Round 2

As you begin the level, prepare to fight some of those flying yellow goblins of the previous level. Unlike then, though, you'll end up having them shoot one, or even two fireballs at a time. It is noteworthy that you can deflect the fireballs by attacking them, making the fifth power-up all the more useful here.

Progress rightward and carefully across the ledges. Don't fall between them - you'll die. Along the way, you'll probably deal with a few of the yellow humanoids. In this case, if they're above you, jump-attack them; if below, jump on them and move on. At one point, fireballs will come out of a hole in the ground - it should be soon after the second truly mid-air ledge. Time your jump carefully as you go across, for the fireballs will come out periodically, and do remember that you can jump on them.

Continue on a bit more, across the ledges and past more flying yellow goblins. Eventually, you'll hit the main platform again and will be able to progress right into the next area.

Here is just another rope climbing sequence. Like before, you'll want to go up, defeating flying enemies as they appear, and striking at the silvery toads on the side when the path is clear, letting you reach them. I will also note that, since you're going up, you can just repeatedly use the Up and 1 Button combo if you have the fifth power-up - it'll take out every enemy along the way!
Once you reach the third area, you'll immediately begin to deal with the rolling red bugs of the previous round. Deal with them in a similar manner - bypass them when they come up and, as they do so, turn around and smack 'em. Continue heading right. You'll soon deal with some of the yellow leapfrogs you found during the previous round as well. Deal with them as before - when they jump, either attack or jump-dodge, or you can attack from afar if you have the first power-up equipping.

Continue to the right. As you approach the reddish background, be especially careful. The enemies will really rev up their swarms here and you'll need to defeat enemies more and more often, or just flat-out bypass them. Be especially wary of standing on the stone platforms that are interspersed here - the yellow leapfrogs can and will jump at you from there, often killing you. You'll also begin to see more of the yellow humanoid enemies as you progress - smack them and move on.

Continue heading right, albeit carefully, as you don't want to be monster dinner. Eventually, you'll finally exit from in front of the reddish ledge into the cavern again. Progress right, more often than defeating a couple more of the yellow leapfrogs as you head to the next area.

You can treat this area similarly to the first area of Round 2 - be very wary of the flying yellow goblins above you, as they love to dive at you and use fireballs. You can, again, deflect the fireballs with the use of your weapon, showing off the ever-increasing usefulness of the fifth power-up.

Progress right across the ledges, being very careful not to land in the gaps betwixt them. Humanoid enemies will appear on occasion and, as before, deal with them with jump attacks if they're above, or by jumping on them and moving on if they're below.

As I said before, this particular area just requires extreme care and awareness of your surroundings. Eventually, you'll reach the right side and be allowed to progress through teh cave wall into the next area.

As you enter the sixth area, proceed to the right and you'll again deal more swarms of the rolling red bugs. Gah, where's a non-medieval exterminator when you need one!? Progress rightward and be extremely careful here. The bugs often like to hit you five or six at once as you head rightward. Use the same tactics as usual to deal with them - crouch-strike as they come up - though, if they're attacking in large numbers, you may want to alternatively consider just jumping on them and letting them roll away.

Not much further right should be a gap in the floor. Go into it and proceed to the right. Feel free to defeat any enemies on the upper ledges, and the same goes for the red rolling bugs, too - they're practically at your mercy down here. Just thwack 'em and they're gone! >:) As you go along, you'll probably see the upper area open up a few times. There's no real purpose in going up there, so just continue along this lower level to the third gap you see, which should be just past a wall. Defeat the enemy, if any, on the ledges left and right of the gap, then jump up and head to the right. Past an enemy (more often than not), you'll find the next area.

In this area, proceed to the right. This area is still much like the previous area with many small ledges. Proceed to the right carefully, defeating the flying yellow goblins as they come on-screen. Here, especially, they like to fire fireballs, so be sure to be ready to deflect or dodge at any time. The yellow humanoids also make a reappearance here, so remember the rules for them - jump-attack if they're above, jump on and move on if they're below. But, again, just be careful and make sure your path ahead is safe before you actually try making that jump. The gaps between the platforms, again, will kill you if you fall down in them.
In this area, you'll be absolutely swarmed upon by enemies. Early on in this eighth area, you'll mostly deal with horse-like enemies. You can kill them with a couple of smacks with your weapon, or by jumping on them. The same goes for the horses who are being ridden, but you'll want to be careful of these latter creatures, as they can throw axes or tomahawks or ... you know, something sharp.

Through the level, as you go right, you'll also deal with numerous yellow humanoids as well as red ground-huggers in addition to the aforementioned horses. The former of these enemies can be thwacks and that'll be it. However, you'll need to crouch-strike the red ground-huggers. They often come in large quantities as well, so be ready to mash the 1 Button or to do a lot of hopping across the enemy heads.

Near the end of the area, there should be a stacking of three humanoids. If you manage to kill the bottom one, then the other two before they touch the ground, you should get a 10,000-point bonus. All I did was mash the 1 Button more, as my timer was dwindling down. Anyways, continue onto the next area.

The ninth area and the final one contains the boss for this level. This one can be a bit more annoying. This warlock-like boss will teleport around the field and suddenly stop. He'll remain still for about one or two seconds, then let loose with a fireball aimed directly at you. He'll then go back to warping around, looping through this until someone dies.

To win this boss, it's a bit simpler than you think. You first want the boss to stop moving around and get into his dormant few seconds. In this time, smack him once or twice with your weapon, then jump! This should allow you to dodge the fireball, or at least jump on it, which is completely safe. Repeat this several times - it should take around five to seven hits to beat this boss.

Round 3

You'll begin with a rope climbing sequence, heading down. As before, use the general strategem from before. Attack enemies flying above you first as you climb down, then, as you go, smack the silvery toads to the left and right when the path is clear. Jump off at the bottom and continue on into the next area.

Here, proceed rightward. You'll encounter enemies much like in Round 1. This primarily includes the grayish humanoids, who can be readily beaten with a good smack; the red ground-hugging enemies, who require to crouch before attacking; and the dragon/soldier duos, which can be taken both with a single smack, but the dragon is completely able to be ignored. The red ground-hugging enemies also begin to seem to rush at you when you're in their sights, so also be ready to jump over them, especially in large swarms.

Anywho, right. You'll deal with these varied enemy swarms even as you exit the cave, but all you can particularly do is just batter the crap out of them as they come. You'll eventually see a gap in the ground as you re-enter the caves. Jump over it and the next one, continuing the same tactics as normal. Be especially careful in the forested portion of the area, as the contrast in the game makes the enemies difficult to see. I'd recommend keeping up low, crouching strikes every five to ten seconds, or abusing the fifth power-up (Up + 1).

Eventually, the forest will end and bring you back into the cave. You'll probably see the hole in the ground. Don't go in there, as it is a dead-end. Yes, you'll have to continue with the swarms, but at least they're not really differentiating in this portion of the level. =/ Continue right to find the next cave. Further right is the next area.

Continue rightward. You'll walk along a featureless path for a fair while, mostly only encountering the grayish humanoids along the way. Soon, though, the red ground-hugging enemies and soldier/dragon duos come out en masse. You'll want to continue the strategy from the previous portion of the level - smack them all. The soldiers from the dragons really take the highest priority, then the red ground-huggers, as they both can be fairly fast. The gray humanoids only should be taken when they're threatening you, and the dragons can be completely ignored again. Also consider trying to jump over enemies when you're getting overwhelmed on the ground.

Anyways, continue rightward along the featureless path. There are a few branches (distinctly rectangular) that can be used for platforms if you need them, and there are a few stone ledges, too. I wouldn't stay too long on either, though - those soldiers can jump at you. You'll eventually find the cave. Not much past the entryway is the exit.

Area four consists of a mountain-like region. This time, on the ground, you'll mostly deal with the yellow leapfrogs. These enemies, as before, like to leap at you suddenly. You'll want to either jump over or on them, the latter of which kills them if the third power-up is enabled. You can also attack them as they come at you, but that isn't as recommended, because you don't always hit them like that.

Defeat as you progress to the right and you'll eventually come across some holes in the background walls. From there, yellow humanoid enemies tend to come out of the walls. They're still worth little mention - give 'em a smack, or, if you're in a rather large swarm, you can always jump on them. You'll deal with these two enemies for a little while and the path is otherwise featureless.

As you reach the fourth or fifth distinct set of holes in the wall, you'll also begin to deal with some bat-like enemies. These are pretty easy to deal with, even though they can swoop down through the ground and back up. I recommend just jumping on them or hitting them from afar, the latter of which is fairly possible with the first power-up enabled. You won't see too many of these, mostly just the yellowish enemies from before, so just continue onward. You'll eventually enter the cavern again, past which is the entryway to the fifth area.

In this area, you'll find very few yellow humanoid enemies, though you'll probably encounter a few more of the yellow flying goblins. As in previous encounters, you'll just want to jump and attack them, using the fifth power-up's ability in mid-air if possible. Remember that you can deflect the fireballs from these enemies if you get desperate, but don't rely on it.

Anywho, progress rightward. This area is actually quite brief. Just jump across the few ledges here, bewaring the fireballs (you can jump on) after the second large pillar, then move on to the next area.

Here, progress rightward. It's the same as the area described two minor sections above here, at least initially. You know the deal - attack the yellow leapfrogs from afar or jump on them, attack the yellow humanoids directly or with jumps, and the bats can be easily jumped upon or hit from afar. Progress rightward.

You'll eventually reach an area mostly featuring a log bridge. Cross it and jump over the gaps as necessary. Be especially careful of the yellow leapfrog enemies - either try to do a long jump on them or to hit them from afar, especially near the gaps, as you'll easily get killed when around there!

Eventually, you'll return to the canyon-like area. Refer to the first paragraph underneath the line above for how to progress onward despite the enemies. This part is very brief and will end soon.

The final area contains the boss, much like the boss of Round 2. You can deal with him in that same manner, so I'll just quote that bit...

This warlock-like boss will teleport around the field and suddenly stop. He'll remain still for about one or two seconds, then let loose with a fireball (or two, sometimes later on) aimed directly at you.

Round 4

When you begin, you'll quickly be assaulted by flying yellow goblin enemies. You'll want to hit these with jumping attacks, but beware of the fireballs they can shoot. Progress rightward and along the upper level, rather than go in the gap. You'll soon begin to encounter those yellow humanoids that can extend their arms. Attack them directly if you have the first power-up, but, otherwise, I'd probably jump on them and move on.

You'll soon see a third higher level rise up. Ignore it and continue into the cavern. Run along the lower level if you want as you continue to beat the yellow humanoids - this will make it easier to dodge the fireballs from the yellow goblins flying above. As you reach the second empty cave, you should see more of those fire cannons you saw in an earlier round. They are more lethal now, able to exude streams of fire, so quickly take 'em out! You can just give 'em a simple smack while down here.

In the third empty cave, where there is a fireball-launching gap to the right, I'd prefer to actually get on the middle level by using the ledge to the left, then to the topmost level. The goblins shouldn't be much of a threat here, so smack them and move on. Continue right, but carefully, as those fireballs still kill, but they can still be jumped on.

Past those ledges, continue along to the right. You'll deal primarily with yellow humanoids and yellow flying goblins, and that's about it as you continue. You may encounter a few more of those fire cannons, but they're quite rare around here. Use the same strategies as before and you'll soon which the cave where the exit to the next area is.

Simply begin by progressing right. As you go along, you'll reach a gap. It's a dead-end path down there, so don't worry over it. Continue right along the upper level and you'll begin to encounter the red ground-hugging enemies of previous rounds. As before, use crouching strikes to attack them, or jumps if you find them in large swarms. Remember, they can speed up to attack you, so try to keep your distance.

Especially begin to be careful around the forested portion of the level due to the horrible contrast. As you go along, you'll also encounter some of the horses you fought near the end of Round 2. They'll take two hits to beat, and, more often than not, they have riders on them. I'd recommend trying to jump-attack them when possible, or using crouching-strikes. Either way, proceed along past them and the red ground-huggers.

As you progress along, you'll also likely find a few yellow humanoids. You'll primarily deal with them in the form like in the aforementioned sequence in Round 2 - a stacking of three, which you can get bonus points for killing them all before the top two touch the ground. The bonus remains at 10,000 points.

Not long after that, past a gap, you'll find a pathway into the cave below. Do go down there and proceed to the right a bit. See, there is a yellow humanoid perched, probably off-screen, ready to jump at you as you hit that small ledge. From down here, you can dodge or kill him, then proceed further along the upper level.

You'll primarily deal with the red ground-huggers as you continue, though you'll eventually begin to deal with the random horseman, too. Same strategies, same strategies... You'll possibly see another gap like the one mentioned in the previous paragraph. Deal with it, then proceed right on the upper level into the cave. Defeat the enemies as you proceed right to the next portion of the round.

Here is just another rope climbing sequence. Like usual, you'll want to go up, defeating flying enemies as they appear, and striking at the silvery toads on the side when the path is clear, letting you reach them. I will also note that, since you're going up, you can just repeatedly use the Up and 1 Button combo if you have the fifth power-up - it'll take out every enemy along the way!
In the next area, proceed right, but carefully. You'll begin to deal with more of those flying yellow goblins as you proceed - just one or two at first, but they'll come in larger numbers later. You should probably jump-attack them, so that you have plenty of time to dodge any fireballs they launch at you. You may also deal with some fire cannons rising up from the cave below - duck and attack them as they come up to subdue them.

As you continue to the right, you'll reach a ledge-filled sequence. You may find a few humanoids around here - either attack them directly or use jumping to kill/bypass them. Remain especially aware of the flying goblins here - one misstep and you're dead. Progres carefully to the right and you'll soon reach a solid platform with a few humanoids on it. Beat them and continue on to the next set of ledges. Use the same plan as before. You'll encounter another solid platform on the way with more humanoids, then, just a bit further along, you'll find the much larger ledge.

Here, you may fight one or two more humanoids as you progress to the right, but the main danger remains the yellow goblins above. You can still use the same strategies here as on the ledges, but be careful of any fire cannons popping up from below, if any. If you find one, be sure to duck and smack it before any of the other enemies, as they like to suddenly strike.

Progress to the right along this ledge and you'll soon reach a gap in the gap that is releasing fireballs at you. The only easily-done way I could think of to cross this devilish pathway was to actually jump on a fireball - completely safe, but be sure to quickly move aside after bouncing! On the other side, continue right and deal with a few more enemies as you head into the next area.

Here, proceed right. You'll deal with, primarily, more of the yellow flying goblins. Jump-attack them as usual and continue on. Your first gap will be one that launches fireballs at you - carefully bypass it, which can be done with good timing, or just bounce on a fireball like before. You'll also see a gap in the path you can go into. Don't worry over it, as it just leads to a bottomless pit that will kill you.

Instead, just progress along the upper level, past more enemies and jumping over the gap as you go. This same gap is also releasing a high number of fireballs, so be careful as you cross it. On the other side, further right, you'll begin to find more of the yellow humanoid enemies. As per the usual, you don't exactly want to be hit by their extendable arms. I recommend jumping, or, if possible, using the first power-up's ability to let you attack from afar. (It's automatically done.)

Progress right, ever more on the upper level of the level. You'll soon reach the cave, and probably a few more of the yellow goblins. Defeat them as usual and proceed into the final area of the level, which is not much further to the right.

This area consists of a boss not unlike the one you fought in Round 1. I'll just copy and paste the text...

This boss is relatively simple. If you get too close, the boss will sometimes punch you, and he can also leap around at times. As with any other enemy, you'll be killed if he touches you. He, however, can take several hits to beat. If you got the first and/or fifth power-ups from the main level, you should be fine with attacks. All you really must do is hit him around five times, which can usually be done before he gets a move in or two. What I, personally, did was stand still and aim at him. Whenever he jumped, he seemed to miss me, and he didn't a chance to actually punch me.

Round 5

You'll begin the final round with a rope climbing sequence, heading down. As before, use the general strategem from before. Attack enemies flying above you first as you climb down, then, as you go, smack the silvery toads to the left and right when the path is clear. Jump off at the bottom and continue on into the next area.

Here, progress to the right across the ledges, bewaring the gaps between them. After all, fire burns, no? As you cross, remain aware, as could be only be expected, of the yellow flying goblins. They'll come plenty of times, and will love to launch fireballs at you. It'll probably be best to attack in the air, using the fifth power-up's ability (Up + 1), if possible, to help deflect the fireballs.

You may also, at some rare points, find a yellow humanoid. Jump on them and just move on, or directly attack them and move on - whichever you prefer. This portion of Round 5 is pretty featureless other than the ledge jumping and the enemies impeding such, though. Just keep jumping to the right across the ledges and you'll eventually make it to the next area.

In the third area, you'll have another rope climbing sequence.
Outside in the fourth area, begin to progress right. Be careful, though - some of the red rolling bugs that we haven't seen for a while will come from underneath you. They work like before - come up, then roll at you. Give them a smack to beat them (or a jump), preferably as they come up, the latter strategy requiring a ducking strike.

As you progress, you'll begin to encounter some of the yellow leapfrog enemies, too. Deal with them as you have in previous levels - attack from afar, if you have the first power-up, or jump when they leap at you, or strike when they leap at you. I'd go for the third strategy only as a last-ditch choice, as it tends to not work as well as you'd prefer.

Further along, just after the initial group of yellow leapfrogs, you'll find some more of the bat enemies, too. (Yeah, this is slowly evolving into an enemy review sequence.) Deal with them with strikes from afar, or jump on them as they dive up under you.

Carefully take out the enemies as you progress rightward along the otherwise featureless path into the next area.

Here, progress right and you'll find some of the red ground-hugger enemies, probably en masse, too. Take them out in the usual way, with low-strikes or jumping combos if you can manage it in a large swarm. Remember that they love to speed up and ram you if they see you. Probably interspersed among the initial ground-hugger swarm are a few of the yellow humanoids, which you can simply smack and move on - nothing special about them here.

Continue on and over the gaps as you progress; and, yes, I mean all of them. As you head around the fourth one, you'll see a stacking of three yellow humanoids. If you've paid attention in the previous few levels, you probably understand that this means that, if you strike them all before the top two touch the ground, then you'll get 10,000 extra points.

Continue on. Deal with the enemies you encounter as you progress, and do so in the usual ways. Not long after the bonus stack mentioned previously, there will be a red ledge coming up from the ground past a few trees. If you get on it, quickly jump to the right to avoid the yellow humanoid that'll run along and jump at you while you're on it. The same goes for the next red ledge further to the right.

Not much further past there, you'll begin to encounter some horsemen along with the yellow humanoids and red ground-huggers. Quickly strike them twice to beat them - it's a bit too hard to jump over them. Further right should be a few gaps. Bypass them both and continue on to the next area, defeating enemies in the usual ways.

Here, you'll want to progress rightward. You'll initially encounter a few of the red ground-hugging enemies, which are no different than those encountered in the previous area; the same goes for the yellow humanoids not much further along. You'll also encounter a few horsemen and a few of the bonus stackings of yellow humanoids. Again, nothing that wasn't really covered in the previous area... Your main difficulty will be in dealing with two consecutive horsemen at once - I usually duck down close to the first one and quickly mash the 1 Button until he and the next horseman are dead.

Perhaps the other main difficulty will be the swarms of the enemies themselves - they come in quite large numbers, and often from both the left and right. It's a nice idea to consider either jumping across the enemies, rapidly swapping between left and right attacks, or to use the fifth power-up's power (Up + 1). Be careful during those types of swarms as you'll likely lose a life.

At the right side, you'll find the entrance to the final area.

In the final area of Round 5 resides the final boss. His primary attack consists of leaping at you, then, when kneeling after landing, quickly bringing his sword on the ground. In fact, he'll do this as the fight begins, so, when the fight begins, quickly leap to the left!!

From there on out, it's actually quite easy, albeit a bit lengthy. You'll need to pretty much just dodge his sword attack in the aforementioned manner, then jump on said sword or further out of the way and mash the 1 Button as much as you can to hit the boss. I recommend, due to the rapid and repeated nature of his jumping, to try and hit him as you retreat from the initial strike, then to get him after the attack is done with.

This boss also does have an attack where he can launch the projectile on his hand. This doesn't seem to happen much unless you happen to physically run away during the initial attack. You can jump on and over the projectile, so you can basically treat it like his sword, although note that it does go away, then back to the boss!

Good luck with the boss. He'll take somewhere between eight and ten hits to defeat. Afterwards, you'll get to see the ending of the game.

CONGRATULATIONS! You have beaten the game of Rygar!
