Introduction

Welcome to another FAQ of mine. This one covers the SMS game known as The Three Dragon Story. The Three Dragon Story is one of a fair few Korean homebrew games created for the Sega Master System. This particular one is a standard top-down scrolling shooter in the style of games like Xenon 2, Galaga '88, and Xevious, among numerous of other arcade-style games.

This game was apparently made by Zemina in 1989 for Sega's Master System. In the twenty-four years hence, not a single complete FAQ has be written for it, until now. I, along with other members of the GameFAQs FAQ Contributor boards, have taken it upon ourselves to write at least one guide for every Sega Master System game out there and, at least at the time of writing, we're very close! ^_^

And, so, that's more or less how I came upon this came. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; I hope you enjoy!

General Notes/Tips

  • Firstly, you'll probably have to cheat. The difficulty in this game is horribly off-balance to the point that it is nearly impossible to make it past the fifth level's own boss without an infinite health code. If you want one for the Pro Action Replay, this one should work -- 00D02D:50

  • Shoot everywhere... but only with the infinite ammo weapon. There are a number of hidden tiles in the game. Most of them are beneficial to you and may yield new weapons or armor to reduce damage; there are a few, however, that are skull-marked. Don't touch them! As for why they're unmentioned in the walkthroughs for the levels, they seem to be placed at random. Also note that some can take several shots to reveal, so look closely - if you see attacks oddly stopping short, something's probably there.

  • Stay in the middle of the screen! 'Nuff said, there - with these massive enemy swarms, you do not want to get trapped in a corner!

  • Prioritize your survival! It is better for you to just dodge the enemies than shoot at them if you will get hit in the process. You rarely will be allowed to take more than six hits and even the first level will effectively tell you to dodge when possible. It's better to make it to the boss with a full health gauge and the initial weapon than with 1/6 of the gauge and every weapon possible.

  • Save the powerful weaponry for later! Bosses are orders of magnitude more powerful than the basic enemies you find in the levels. The only extra weapons you'll want to use include the arrows that go forever in one direction and those that surround you.

  • As for the walkthroughs... They will simply describe the enemy swarms in the order they appear on-screen. Rarely will three or four seconds appear in the interim between swarms, except prior to the level's boss - to emphasize this point, getting to the boss rarely will take more than four minutes, which encompasses all of the bulleted swarms. Most of the hard work will be done by you, but how to actually try to take care of them is done when reasonably needed - obviously, as time goes on, you'll get the general idea of "staying away" by yourself and this is not mentioned to save space. At the end of each level is how to cover the boss as well.

Stage 1

  • About three seconds in, some black blobs appear. Take out those you can, usually every other one.
  • About ten seconds later, you are quickly assaulted by a number of white birds. Stay to the side; they favor the center.
  • About four seconds later, some skeletons pop up. These take multiple hits to beat, so try to stay away.
  • They are quickly followed by some bats going along the screen in a zig-zag. Shoot them all.
  • Next are more black blobs. Shift to the top of the screen during this time.
  • Soon, a huge swathe of bats come from the bottom of the screen haphazardly.
  • Then some white birds come from the top.
  • Afterwards, some bouncing turtles appear, followed by some bats, both from the top.
  • Bats will soon then come from the bottom-right and top-right. Bottom-center, near the edge, is safe.
  • More skeletons are next; stick to the bottom-center/bottom-right, because bats will soon from the bottom-left.
  • About two seconds later, white birds assault from the top; go to the side.
  • Some wraiths come by next. Simply dodge their shots; feel free to shoot back, I suppose.
  • Two bats swarms come from the top-left; one curving to the bottom-left, one zig-zagging about.
  • Some spiders are next. Dodge them as they come along, though feel free to take some out.
  • Some more bats come next, going from top-right to top-left.
  • Then white birds come - they favor the bottom-left.
  • More bouncing turtles are next, allied by some more wraiths.
  • Soon will come a stream of bats from the top-left.
  • Next are some skeleton soldiers, allied by a swarm of bats coming from the bottom and zig-zagging.
  • Next are some black globs.
  • After this, bats come from the top-right in two swarms.
  • Then there's a white bird assault favoring the bottom-right.
  • Then you'll find some turtles coming from the top.
  • Soon following are a zig-zag swarm of bats from the top-right.
  • Next, bats come in two swarms from the bottom-left, and one from the bottom-right.
  • Soon, you'll find more skeletons allied by bats from the top-right.
  • There will also be a white bird assault favoring the bottom-center.
  • Soon thereafter, you'll find a few wraiths, then some bats from the top-right and bottom-left.
  • Next are more of the spiders. Shoot 'em. They are allied with bats from the bottom-left.
  • As the bats leave, a swarm of white birds favoring the bottom-left appear.
  • Next are a very few turtles to end the level.

LEVEL BOSS

The boss consists of a simple red demon who will constantly fire some kind of damaging powder, and some lightning every few seconds. The best bet for this battle is to stick near the bottom of the screen and, from there, go a bit ahead of the boss - I'd say about 1/3 to 1/2 of the screen - and fire your weapons as you follow it (while being ahead, of course). This should get the boss eliminated in around forty seconds, but he will speed up as time goes on, so be careful. And also don't run into any of the powder - obviously, you would be hurt, so it's just better to live to fight another day.

Stage 2

  • First are some ghosts that zig-zag from the bottom-left.
  • Then there are bats from the bottom-left heading to the bottom-right. They're allied with bats from the top-right.
  • Next is a swarm of white birds favoring the left side of the screen.
  • Next is a swarm of bats zig-zagging from the top-right, and ghosts from the bottom-left going to the top-left.
  • Some wraiths will come by next.
  • Bats will come from the top-right going to the top-left and bottom-right going top-right. Stay to the left.
  • Next, fish will randomly pop-out of the water for about three seconds.
  • Following this are bats zig-zagging from the top-left.
  • Next is a swarm of white birds favoring the left side.
  • Then there are some wraiths, followed by ghosts from the top-left heading to the top-right.
  • Bats will then come from the bottom-left.
  • Next, there is a swarm of white birds, ghosts (top-left to bottom-left), bats (top-right to top-left), ghosts (zig-zag from top-right) ghosts (bottom-right to bottom-left), and white birds (favoring the right side). Try to stay in the bottom-center and slay any threats.
  • Then there are some more random fish a few seconds later.
  • After them, ghosts will go from bottom-right to top-right, and bottom-right bats will zig-zag.
  • There will be two more bottom-right bat swarms - one to the bottom-left, one to the top-right. Stay to the top-left.
  • There is anotehr white bird swarm favoring the right side next.
  • Then there will be a swarm of bats (zig-zag) and ghosts (to top-left) from the bottom-left.
  • Following, there are some wraiths.
  • Then there are two bat swarms going to the bottom-left, from the bottom-right and top-left.
  • Then you'll find more random fish for a few seconds.
  • After is a swarm of bats from the top-left zig-zagging and a swarm of white birds favoring the left.
  • Next are some wraiths again.
  • Near the end of them, ghosts will go top-left to top-right.
  • Next, you'll find bats from the top-left zig-zagging and white birds favoring the right side.
  • Then there are ghosts (top-left to bottom-left), bats (top-right to top-left), ghosts (bottom-right to bottom-left), ghosts (bottom-left to bottom-right), and white birds favoring the left.
  • Next up are more random fishes.
  • Following, ghosts go from the bottom-right to the top-right, and bats bottom-right to bottom-left.
  • Next, bats go from the top-right, then the bottom-left, to the top-left.
  • Then there's a swarm of white birds favoring the center.
  • As that ends, bats zig-zag from the bottom-right and ghosts go top-left to bottom-left.
  • Next are some more wraiths for a bit.
  • When it ends, bats will go from the top-left to the top-right, then the bottom-right.
  • More random fishes...

LEVEL BOSS

This level boss consists of a green Loch Ness-type water dragon. Its primary attack is to breathe fire at you in an ironic and homing manner, but that's about it. You can easily dodge the flames in a manner similar to how you beat the first boss. Stay far away and ahead of the boss's movement patterns - this should help you to dodge the flames and not be hit too much. If you use swords to attack the head (its weak point), this fight shouldn't last more than half a minute.

Stage 3

  • First are some purplish blobs.
  • As the swarm's back is halfway down, bats will go top-right to top-left.
  • As those bats reach the top-left, more will go zig-zagging from the top-left.
  • Then there are some of the spiders you fought in Stage 1 allied with a haphazard white bird swarm.
  • Following are some black blobs.
  • As they attack, ghosts and bats will zig-zag from the top-right and bottom-right respectively.
  • Following are some wraiths and ghosts going top-left to top-right).
  • Then there is a swarm of white birds favoring the left.
  • Some stones will begin to roll towards you, mostly on the left side. Also, bats zig-zag from bottom-left.
  • Soon following, ghosts will go top-right to bottom-right.
  • Then there are some skeletons. As the swarm ends, bats go bottom-right to bottom-left.
  • Following this are white birds favoring the left.
  • Ghosts then go bottom-left to top-left, bats will zig-zag, white birds will favor the center, ghosts will zig-zag, bats will go top-right to bottom-right, ghosts will go top-right to top-left, and a white bird swarm will favor the center.
  • Next, some green monsters will dig themselves up from the ground and move on.
  • Following this, bats from the bottom-right will zig-zag.
  • Then there are some hopping turtles nearby as ghosts go bottom-left to top-left.
  • Following are some wraiths, then purplish blobs, then white birds favoring the center, then bats going bottom-left to bottom-right, then bats from the bottom-right zig-zagging.
  • Then there are more spiders. Meanwhile, white birds will attack the center.
  • Following this are some black blobs while ghosts and bats zig-zag across the screen in opposite directions.
  • Wraiths will follow them, then ghosts going top-left to bottom-left.
  • After that, white birds will favor the right as they swarm.
  • Stones will then roll along the center.
  • Following two or three stones, bats will zig-zag from the bottom-right as ghosts go bottom-left to top-left.
  • More skeletons will come.
  • Bats then come by, going bottom-left to bottom-right, as white birds attack, favoring the right.
  • Ghosts will come by, heading top-left to top-right, while bats zig-zag from the top-right.
  • Next, white birds will favor the left side, ghosts zig-zag from the top-left, bats go top-left to bottom-left, ghosts go bottom-right to bottom-left. That's it.

LEVEL BOSS

This boss looks akin to a jellyfish. Its primary attack is to actually just spawn enemies to attack you with - they will slowly home in on you, so be careful. (Note, of course, that they work like regular enemies and will yield points.) You can with them quite simply - just run around in wide circles and they'll effectively leave you alone. Of course, that green powder will also hurt you, but that's easily avoided. After this, you must merely attack the boss. He will get faster as time goes on, but don't worry over that too much. If you have trouble, you can just run in ovals along the bottom to avoid the enemies and the powder, then simply use the "stay ahead but attack" strategy we've used twice before.

Stage 4

  • First, you'll find skeletons, of course. Fireballs will fly by during this time - just dodge 'em.
  • Next, ghosts will zig-zag from the bottom-left while bats go bottom-right to bottom-left.
  • Next are some black blobs, then bats zig-zagging from the bottom-left, then stones mostly along the right.
  • Next are white birds favoring the center.
  • Then there are bats zig-zagging while ghosts go bottom-left to top-left.
  • Enemies then begin to dig themselves up at this point - staying in dead center kept damage off of me.
  • Following this are some fireballs.
  • Then there are white birds favoring the center.
  • Then there are more skeletons.
  • Bats will then zig-zag from the top-right.
  • Following this are some purplish blobs as ghosts zig-zag from the top-right and fireballs fly by.
  • Next, wraiths. Bats will zig-zag from the bottom-left as ghosts go bottom-right to bottom-left.
  • White birds will fly by, favoring the left.
  • Bats then go bottom-left to bottom-right, followed by ghosts zig-zagging from the top-left and bats behind 'em.
  • More fireballs.
  • Following these are some black blobs, allied by bats zig-zagging from the top-right.
  • Next are more monster digging themselves out from underground.
  • Then there are bats going top-left to top-right and birds favoring the left.
  • More fireballs!
  • Then there are ghosts zig-zagging from the top-right.
  • Next, bats going bottom-left to bottom-right.
  • Then more black blobs, with bats zig-zagging from the bottom-right.
  • White birds will ambush you, favoring the left as a few stones fall down.
  • Bats then zig-zag from the top-left as ghosts go top-left to bottom-left.
  • Monsters then dig themselves up some more as fireballs fly by.
  • White birds will ambush you, favoring the right.
  • Following this, skeletons walk by and bats zig-zag from the top-right.
  • Following that, purplish blobs come by as ghosts zig-zag from the top-right and fireballs fly by.
  • Then there are some wraiths again as bats zig-zag from the top-right and ghosts go top-left to top-right.
  • White birds then attack, favoring the left, as bats go bottom-left to top-left.
  • Bats and ghosts will then zig-zag from both left corners as fireballs fly by.

LEVEL BOSS

This level boss consists of a skull moving back and forth, shooting dangerous powder, as skeleton soldiers also walk along the field. This boss can be handled similarly to the Stage 3 boss. Stay ahead of its movements and fire, while keeping the evasion of the powder a priority. Most of the time, you'll just kill the skeletons in the process (especially if you use weapons that keep going after hitting an enemy), so they're relatively negligible.

Stage 5

NOTE

If you're prone to eyesore, you may not want to play this level or the game as a whole. The area will flash brightly for a very brief moment of time, which creates a horrible contrast. Bad enough to the point that it's nearly impossible to see anything due to the sudden yellow/black contrast - which is the sharpest possible contrast. Expect some screw-ups in this strategy, then, as cameras also don't handle this contrast very well.

ANOTHER HUGE NOTE: These flashes do more than just to serve as difficulty enhancers (as if it wasn't already hard enough) - they also reveal certain invisible enemies for flashes of time. There's no way to know where their swarms begin or end, so you're on your own there.

  • First, fireballs!
  • Then there are bats zig-zagging from the bottom-right, followed by ghosts.
  • White birds come from the north next, favoring the left.
  • Bats will go bottom-right to top-right, and ghosts bottom-left to bottom-right.
  • Bats then zig-zag from the bottom-left.
  • White birds will attack, favoring the right.
  • Bats go bottom-right to bottom-left.
  • Fireballs fly by.
  • Ghosts go top-right to bottom-right, then zig-zag from the top-right.
  • Birds will attack, favoring the center.
  • Bats go top-right to bottom-right.
  • Fireballs fly by.
  • Skeletons walk on by, along with a fireball storm.
  • White birds attack, favoring the right.
  • Red blobs attack as ghosts go top-right to top-left.
  • Following this, some turtles will appear.
  • As they come, bats zig-zag from the bottom-right, ghosts go top-right to top-left, and fireballs fly by.
  • Ghosts then zig-zag from the top-left.
  • Following this are some purplish blobs and some fireballs.
  • Then there are some skeletons allied by bats zig-zagging from the top-right.
  • Next up, more red blobs. They're allied by ghosts zig-zagging from the top-left and bats going top-right to bottom-right.
  • Fireballs fly by as white birds ambush you, favoring the center.
  • Then there are some more purplish blobs as bats and ghosts zig-zag from the bottom corners.
  • Whites birds will then attack, favoring the center.
  • Bats will go bottom-left to top-left.
  • Ghosts go top-left to top-right.
  • Bats then zig-zag around as white birds attack, favoring the left.
  • Bats will go top-right to top-left as fireballs fly by.
  • Ghosts will go bottom-right to top-right, then zig-zag from the bottom-left.
  • White birds will attack favoring the center.
  • Bats will go top-left to bottom-left as fireballs fly by.
  • Skeletons walk on by as fireballs fly by, too.
  • White birds attack, favoring the center.
  • They're followed by red blobs, then ghosts going top-left to top-right.
  • Behind the red blobs are some turtles.
  • Bats will zig-zag from the top-left as ghosts go top-left to top-right and fireballs fly by.
  • Ghosts will zig-zag from the bottom-left.
  • Then there are some purplish blobs coming by with some fireballs after them.
  • Following them are some skeletons.
  • Bats will zig-zag from the top-right as the skeleton hoarde recedes.
  • They're followed by more red blobs, then ghosts zig-zagging from the top-left and bats going bottom-left to top-left.
  • More fireballs blaze by.
  • A small swarm of white birds attacks, favoring the center.
  • Purplish blobs come by, then bats and ghosts zig-zagging from the top two corners.

LEVEL BOSS

The level boss consists of a flaming dinosaur. He will fire flame (the powdery stuff) directly at you as fireballs fly by as before, but this time eternally. There's no real way to say how to win - as mentioned previously, this is a point where you're pretty much certain to lose. Your character moves too slowly to dodge it all, and you almost always die in six hits. If anything, it's a game of luck trying to hit the dinosaur as he moves fairly sporadically. All that can be said of this burnt reptilian beast is to activate some kind of cheat code and try that - try as you might, you'll almost always lose this fight without it.

Final Boss

Immediately after finishing off the boss of Stage 5, you'll reach the final boss of the game. This consists of dragon heads going by for a while. They can appear from the left side or the right side, at any vertical level, and spew flame at you that will go to the other side. This will damage you, obviously - as will going into the flames at the top and bottom of the screen. The bosses are only damaged on their heads, and they appear very briefly as well.

If you've got the weapon that tosses out two arrows at once, you're in luck. This level will allow you to go through the right side of the screen to the left side, and vice versa - with this "two-pronged" weapon, you can stand on the barrier between the two screens and attack from there with minimal effort. You'll still be damaged, but the bosses rarely traverse near the bottom of the screen. Relatively speaking, anyhow.

Without it, you'll have to deal with it by standing near the edge of the screen and firing at the heads as they come. Either way, you'll have a hard time - as mentioned with the Stage 5 boss, you can't really move fast enough to dodge anything in this game, so you'll be stuck with luck when it comes to this level. After beating the green dragon, you'll find a blue one that fights like the green one, and then a red one, also fighting like the green one. Again, if you somehow manage to win, it'll take a long time on your behalf, although it is quite possible. Good luck!
