Introduction

Welcome to another FAQ of mine. This one covers the SMS game Xenon 2. Xenon 2 is a Galaga '88 look-a-like, in which you progress through a star system in a scrolling format, destroying interstellar starships and such along the way.

...

That's all I have to say on this game. Enjoy.

(Also, as a bit of trivia, xenon is one of the six official noble gases, along with helium, neon, krypton, radon, and argon, and unofficially ununoctium. These elements are known for their lack of reactivity and inertness, and the relatively tedious processes needed to find them.)

Walkthrough

Level 1

^s1|Power-up holder. As you arrive in the level, you should see a power-up-holding enemy float by. Another one will soon follow it - both of them look kinda like the image to the right. From each of them, if you attack them, you'll obtain a power-up. In this case, it is an "S"-marked ball, which will speed up the ship. That's nice. This type of enemy will not particularly try to hurt to you, but don't ram it or you will end up hurt.

Not too long after meeting this first power-up wielder come other enemies. One type of enemy looks kinda like a spike; another like a flat bulging disc. They will come in a swarm, as they often do, curving around the bottom of the screen and back up, then down. Initially, as you see them, move to the center, then back up when it's plausible to fire upon them. Things will continue pretty calmly, relatively speaking, for a few more seconds after the swarm - you'll only deal with a few remnant enemies.

Soon, another swarm will come. Destroy them, but also look to the right - you should see something like an alien flower on the wall. These will shoot annoying projectiles. They can be defeated by getting beneath them and shooting, but it can be tough, especially with the other enemies swarming. My suggestion would be to take out the enemy swarm first, then the wall enemy, but only if there are so many wall enemies it is almost impossible to not get hit. Otherwise, you should be fine in passing.

As you pass by here, as well, you should be able to reach another power-up holder. Break into it to find a dual-fire weapon. This will let you fire from the front and back with this initial attachment - as you proceed further into the game, you'll be able to grab more and obtain obliquely-angled artillery. Not bad.

Soon, you'll begin to notice the wall curve to you. Stay closer to the right to avoid the swarm of red enemies - they'll mostly just tackle you, but they are quite the nuisance. They'll go up, off-screen, and come back down through the center, so you know. As you pass the midpoint of the bulged wall, a few more spike-shaped enemies will come out of the wall just to annoy you. You won't have any warning, so just stick to the right or be destroyed.

And soon, seemingly upgraded versions of the previous red enemy will appear, in addition to several wall enemies, around four, plus a couple more spikes. This time, back up. Defeat the spikes, then any red enemies straying below the wall enemies. Then advance upward and take out the wall enemies as we proceed further. You'll deal with some more spiked enemies as you bypass the final wall enemy, then some more wall enemies, then a few more of the smaller red enemies. Just take them out as they come; nothing too special in this part.

At this point, once the area opens back up, you'll want to shift right, because a few of the beetle-like will pop-up, soon trailed by another small red enemy or two. These silvery enemies don't seem to do much but run into you. They will go up, then down the right side. Beyond them, you'll find a dual-swarm of spikes and wall enemies - you may want to back up and take out as many of the spikes as you can before dealing with the wall enemies, if at all - the latter number few right now, so it's not dreadfully necessary.

Not too far past there, you'll find some of the larger red enemies mentioned earlier. About four of them will come down near the left wall, then go towards the top-right. But they're not gone! Quickly ascend some before they swoop, along with some bulging discs, in from the right side - otherwise, you can easily be pummeled into your death. As soon as the red enemies flee, quickly retreat to the bottom-left corner, as the bulging discs will head into a spiral formating to the center - once you're safe, head to the bottom-center portion of the screen and let loose.

Now it becomes a little more difficult, though, frankly, not as hard as the PC version of this game. *shudder* Anyways, you'll be faced with a fork - left or right. Go left and you'll be swarmed by a number of enemies, namely disks and spikes. Back up and take them on. This space is way too cramped to not die here, and it is not worth risking. Also keep an eye on your stern - more of the larger red enemies will come from behind and ram you into your death, especially if you don't have the tail end attachment found earlier in the level. If you lack that, you're probably going to need to restart the game or find some creative way to dodge.

Once you manage to hit the open area, you'll be swarmed upon by small red enemies and more discs. Simply dodge and fire, then continue. Past some more of the silvery, wrinkly enemies, you'll find a fork in the path again, as well as a terribly cramped assault upon you. Around half a dozen of the smaller red enemies will attack you and swerve in a figure-eight pattern. Try to take out as many as you can without being hit - you do not want to get mixed up in that mess.

As you leave the hole into the open area, a line of small red enemies will bash you, or at least try. If you stick near the wall and rapidly mash 1 or 2, you should be fine. As that wall disappears behind you, you will progress into the harder portion of the level. On the left and right side of the wall are multiple wall enemies, much like those you fought before, but redder, more ferocious. Prepare to deal with them, if you can do so without touching the rocky walls. As you continue, you will soon want to move into the center of the screen - powered-up versions of those wrinkly enemies will come up, first from behind, then from the front.

After them, powered-up versions of the spike enemies will appear at the right side. As you defeat them, beware of the wall enemies, as well as the powered-up red enemy from before. If you head to the left side, you can get a head start on the other swarm, just like this one, before you get killed by it. This will repeat, once more, in the center. Again, focus on the spikes before the big enemy.

Next, at the right side, will be another swarm of those spikes. They'll be tightly-knit, but will spread out, wildly and dangerously - take out as many as you can. The power-up holder nearby will be immensely helpful in this - the power-up it releases will destroy all enemies on-screen, leaving just the projectiles from the wall enemies, if but for a brief moment.

Beyond there, you'll find several more of the spike-red thing swarms from before, which can also be dealt with in a similar manner. They start to the right of where you grabbed the destroy-all power-up, so be quick about it. After they stop, you'll find yourself in an annoying fork area. Enemies will absolutely swarm down both lanes of traffic. All you can do is batter the crap out of the enemies while backing up, hoping to destroy a few wall enemies on the way. The path you choose doesn't particularly matter, though the right side is a slight bit easier.

Not much farther from there is your boss.

LEVEL ONE BOSS

^s2|Boss and weak points (in blue).

  • Attacks: Most of the time, it'll just extend a dragon-like thing from its mouth, as seen in the picture. That is its main method of damaging you - ramming you with it, or the boss itself. Additionally, the boss is capable of shooting from said dragon-like object, so be wary.
  • Strategy: Your main goal is to focus on the base of the "tongue", initially. Pausing can help here. You'll see that the base of the "tongue" is usually in one of two places on the given screenshot - the semi-transparent blue circles. You need to hit the other place to actually damage the boss. It won't always be successful, and it will take a while with all of the dodging. It is well worth noting that most attacks can be dodged more easily if you head to the top-left or top-right corners, so that may be a good place to hang out.

After the boss, you'll gain 2,000 bonus credits for the shop, and you'll proceed to The Shop. Click on the hyperlinked section for more info - otherwise, next level!
NOTE

Remember to spend every credit you can at the shop! This game doesn't not "save up" your credits - if you don't spend any, they are rendered invalid for the rest of the game. It is very wise to spend everything!!

Level 2

As the level begins, you'll quickly deal with a brief swarm of enemies that'll just bypass you for now, so they're worth little note. Past them is a swarm of the spike enemies - deal with them as you have done with other spike enemies so we are able to go on. Past there is a simple swarm of fish-like enemies, which are rather sporadic and there is no particular strategem you need for them.

Further ahead, however, on the walls, you'll find a new type of enemy. These are akin to the wall enemies of the previous level. You'll find them along the walls starting at the point you battle the next swarm of upgraded spike enemies. At this point, staying in the center of the area is the best way to deal with them unless you want to risk damage for points, which is also a decent option. As the path begins to narrow visibly at the top, go back some and stay around the middle one-third of the screen, but closer to the left.

Soon, a swarm of spikes will come out from there. From your relative vantage point, you should be able to take out a decent number of them before they actually begin to impede you from taking out the other set to the right, off-screen. Deal with them both, and perhaps the nearby wall enemy as well.

Speaking of this wall enemy, you will definitely want to keep your eye out about the time your ship is level with it (or the scorched stump) - another pick-up holder will come out. This time, he's carrying a Health Power 2 item! Take this and you will be healed by a large margin, which can be quite helpful after that brutal first level. This level is relatively short - in fact, you're already almost half done! ^_^

Not too long beyond there, you'll find some spinner-like foes. They fly around pretty sporadically, so the best thing to do right now would be to stay back and shoot from afar - you do NOT want to be hurt. Past that swarm, you'll meet up with a large group of spikes flying to the left, as well as a wall enemy on the left. As you defeat them - they will get right in your line of sight, so no worries - a few more strays will fly in. Past them are some of the enemies from the start of the level. Most will stay still or fly straight - either way, no particular worry.

Next up, some more of those familiar dragonfly enemies. They have a tendency to fly straight here, so just back up and let loose. Past them, you'll find two of the silvery, wrinkly enemies from the past level. They'll appear briefly and fly back up to the tri-branched fork in the path.

Here, you'll want to go along the middle path. The other two put you in greater danger of death due to cramped spaces and spinner swarms - here, while you may not gain as many points, at least you'll live to see those points come to fruitition. Of course, some of the spinners will cross over to the middle - just a few - so either move up quickly or rapidly press 1 or 2 to blast them with your rear gun.

As you exit the "labyrinth", to the left, you'll spot a small group of spinner enemies, as well as a wall enemy. Feel free to destroy as you will, but you really, really want that pick-up enemy. Blast it to reveal the ever useful cannon. This will supply you with a cannon alongside the ship to fire powerful missiles - plus, it being hit will not affect you! Make use of it and the Force, my Padawan. =P

After this, you'll be dealing with a relatively simple match-up until the level boss. You'll find several of the silvery, wrinkly enemies - somewhere in the neighborhood of a dozen - plus some additional spinner enemies that usually stick to the lower-left side of the flight zone, so they are barely able to affect you, and vice versa. It's a bit of a breather here - just mash 1 or 2 for a bit and dodge what few projectiles come your way.

And, soon afterwards, it shall be boss kicking time. ... Well, shooting. Whatever.

LEVEL TWO BOSS

^s3|The boss.

  • Attacks: Its main attack is to shoot projectiles. They are relatively weak - no stronger than those of other enemies in this level. However, the boss will also move around a lot - this can lead to him ramming you, which, here, can lead to a loss of 50% of your health or more!
  • Strategy: Look at the screenshot of the boss. At the bottom of the shot are its eyes. One is open; one is closed. The blue circular thing (in the game, not screenshot) is the open eye; the red, closed one is ... well, closed. Your goal is to attack when the eyes are open. And so, this mostly becomes a dodge-and-shoot type of fight. All you can particularly do is avoid the boss until you see one of its eyes open and shoot at them. To get more shooting time in, and therefore damage, you can always try to follow the boss and shoot at its "face", though be warned that this will induce higher levels of damage upon you, something you do not particularly want in this level - that is because this level is almost certain to not yield an extra life from credits.

After winning the brawl, check out The Shop for stuff to purchase, then continue onto the next level!

Level 3

As you enter the level, a few pickup holders will come by. Defeat them both to get a health pickup from each, more than likely refilling your health completely. Not long afterwards, you'll want to draw back because an enemy will extend from the wall nearby. But don't go too far - you'll also have some enemies coming from the bottom-left (heading up right for you!), and the other two corners. If you have Side and Rear Shots, you should be fine here - approach the center of the area and alternatingly mash "1" and "2".

As the swarm ends, beware of another extend-a-enemy on the right side. You can defeat these like the flowers of previous levels - blast 'em. Soon thereafter, you'll, for a while, deal with enemies coming from behind in threes while also avoiding and shooting the extend-a-enemies ahead. Again, it would be nice to have Rear and Side Shot for this level...

Soon, you'll find little eel-like enemies crawling up behind you and often splitting into groups to go across the screen. All the more reason for having Rear and Side -- *shot*. One mini-swarm will come from the lower-left, then the top-right will be from where the rest seem to trickle out.

After the eels, you'll probably see a few metal beetles coming from the left. They're worth little other than cannon fodder, although you might want to scoot upwards a little, as some will come from behind you. Further ahead, you'll find some fossil-like enemies coming from above - again, little more than cannon fodder (unless from behind) here. They'll start swarming you as the next extend-a-enemy appears on-screen. They'll keep it up for a fair while, although, as you see the second extend-a-enemy of the swarm appear (on the right), so will a pickup holder (on the left). Destroy the pickup holder and get the pickup within to destroy all enemies on-screen - however, you may want to try and keep it on-screen to "save" it for just a bit later.

Further ahead, you'll encounter a lot of weak enemies en masse. There will be a single wave from the top-left, quickly followed by one from the top-right. This would be a good time to use the "Z" pickup you recently unlocked, or to get the heck out of the way. Another set will come from the top-left before it's over.

At this point, you'll be going along a long narrow pathway. Enemies will come along it every now and then - there are a few extend-a-enemies, notably, but no major swarms. If you have Side Shot, all you'll need to do for a bit is pay attention to what's ahead and alternatingly mash the fire buttons.

As you enter the clearing, there will be a swarm of enemies coming from the left and right. Notably, a pickup holder will come from the left yielding a health refiller. Be sure to take it. As for the enemies themselves, they can be fairly hard to deal with. I suggest trying to stay actually in their path. You should have Side Shot which can make dealing with them, and any enemies in front of you, pretty easy.

Soon thereafter, you'll find the...

LEVEL THREE BOSS

^s4|Boss and weak points (in blue).

Shop at The Shop if you want. I particularly recommend a Laser for Level 4...

Level 4

I hope you bought a Laser or two, as I recommended previously, for you will deal with lots of vertical swarms of enemies here. With the Laser's piercing qualities, it'll go through an enemy and onto the next one! Vertical swarms like you'll often see here are helpless against the mighty power of the Laser! Mwahaha and such. You'll also want a Rear Shot, and Side Shot will help to minimize enemy swarms.

As you enter the level, you'll deal with some such vertical swarms in the first few seconds, then a few from the right. There will be a stray few as you approach the level itself, but this initial swarm has ceased. A group of enemies will circle to your right as you go towards the fork. Speaking of the fork, use the left branch.

As you cross it, some enemies will swarm down upon you. Laser 'em and move on. A second stream of such enemies will appear. Deal with them as before and continue on - try to get the stray enemy to the right with your Side Shot, if possible. Scoot over to the right, through the gap in the wall. But do so carefully, as being hit by the wall ... well, it hurts you!

Shift into the rightmost column and take out the line of enemies streaming at you, and prepare to dodge the enemy attached to the bottom wall. Shoot it with the Rear Shot, if you can. Continue on upward, mashing or holding down the 1 Button as you go to shoot down most enemies that come by. As you hit the wall to the north, a swarm of enemies will round the corner to the south. Just stay still and let them pass. Then go down, left, and continue northward.

Keep your fingers on the attack buttons because a large enemy will let loose a swarm of projectiles on you. Defeat it and move on. Defeat the next one you see by using the Side Shot.

If you want some extra credits...

Continue on northward. You'll find another projectile swarmer and a swarm of metal beetles past it. Not a lot, but it's something. Return to the second projectile launcher when you're done.

From this spot, shift into the column to the right. Head down and right. Destroy the wall-attached enemy with Side Shot, then go north. As the dead-end extra column from before ends, use Side Shot to destroy a wall-attached enemy to the left. A swarm of cannon-fodder enemies will round the corners coming from the left. Scoot up and take as many out as possible with Rear Shot.

If you want some extra credits (and a health pickup)...

I will note that I strongly recommend doing this, anyways - it cuts out a lot of the difficult enemies along the main path if you have Side Shot.

Rather than head left, continue north. A few stray enemies will come by before a swarm of the fossil-like enemies do. Back-up and take the fossil enemies down - trust me, if you progress forward, you're quite likely to die. Just beyond them, you'll find another one of the projectile launcher enemies. Quickly defeat him.

Head along the path to the right (the one you're on is a dead end) and try to destroy the wall enemy and others to the left with Side Shot. You'll run into another projectile launcher of your own. Defeat him and trek northward, defeating several streams of enemies as you go. At the end, you'll find a pickup-holding enemy, who will yield a health pickup. Nice.

Now, return to that place mentioned in the paragraph preceding this box.

Head left, down, left, and up. Go along the path, which is empty if you used Side Shot to take out the enemies - they're mostly of the cannon fodder type, anyways, so you can just shoot at any remaining. The only exception is a lone projectile launcher about halfway through - but, as with the one before, you can just alternatingly mash "1" and "2" to easily take of him.

Once you reach the clearing past the tunnel, you'll deal with some stray enemies you may have not gotten while along the recommended dead-end path from before, then, further north, a boss.

LEVEL FOUR BOSS

^s5|The boss.

To get more shooting time in, and therefore damage, you can always try to follow the boss and shoot at its "face", though be warned that this will induce higher levels of damage upon you, something you do not particularly want.

Shop at The Shop if you want. A good recommendation for Level 5 would be ... well, more Lasers and Side/Rear Shot if you somehow don't have it.

Level 5

As you enter the crystal-filled level, you'll deal with some red bird-like enemies in fairly large numbers. If you have the Lasers as I recommended, though, you'll be fine. Don't stay at the bottom of the screen, though. About 15 seconds in, you'll end up dealing with some coming from the bottom-right. As I've mentioned several times previously, Side and Rear Shot are absolutely critical, and this is one level where you'll die quickly without them.

More and more of these enemies will at you fairly constantly. Especially once you reach the open area, never stay at the bottom -- try to be in the center so you can see what's coming up around you. And definitely prioritize your survival over getting credits - the projectiles the enemiesbring at you tend to be difficult to avoid.

Eventually, past the clearing (about one minute after the swarms began), you'll find a pickup-holding enemy. This enemy will hold a "Z" pickup, which can destroy all of the enemies on-screen. Try to save it for about five seconds and use it, to give yourself a bit of a breather from these enemies.

You'll soon reach another clearing. As you enter and deal with more enemies, a pickup-holder will appear. Destroy it to find a helpful health pickup. Now, lots of swarms here...

In this particular area of the level, and for about the next ninety seconds or so, try to stay in the very center of the area. You'll not see a wall on either side of the screen when you're sufficiently okay. Then also put your ship forward into the very center of the screen. Combine this with Side Shot, Rear Shot, and multiple Laser weapons, and most enemies that threaten you should be readily dealt with. Sure, be ready to dodge projectiles at any time - and, with the amount of enemies coming along here, they'll fly like raindrops in a thunderstorm. But it's hard for them to shoot you when they're dead, right? Be especially careful of ones coming from behind - Rear Shot combined with rapid, alternated pressing of the 1 and 2 Buttons should be enough to save you from those onslaughts, but remain nevertheless wary and dodge appropriate as they come about.

Eventually, the top side of the area will begin to narrow, signifying the end of this swarm. As you veer to the left to go along without being smashed by the crystals, be especially aware of the bird-like enemies all around you. Side Shot should be enough to deal with most of the problematic ones you deal with as you enter the new clearing. As the crystalline walls approach the bottom of the screen, you should be able to safely shift down and available enemy projectiles just in time to deal with the boss.

LEVEL FIVE BOSS

^s6|Boss and weak points (in blue).

Shop at The Shop dear reader, for Level 6 is the final level, sort of. Especially try to get a Health Power 2 from there and an Extra Life - if the life is unreachable, there's always more lasers.

Level 6

It'll be a relative while before anything of note appears on-screen - about twenty seconds. As you go along, be sure to keep on firing, though, because, past that mark, you'll encounter some minor enemies en masse. The initial ones are readily dealt with by just shooting lasers at them - they are right in the path! About ten seconds later, it gets a bit more difficult with some bird-like enemies loosing projectiles upon you. You could try sticking to the very right side and shooting from there. It worked for me.

More birds will appear, soon followed by physical structure to the level and some more minor enemies. Scoot upward some, because a swarm of enemies - a large stream of them, at that - will run around in from the corner to try and ram you. That will kill you at this point, in those large numbers.

Continue on and you'll soon reach some pickup-holding enemies. Take the health pickups from within, then deal with some more enemies as they come at you. Don't scoot too far left, as some birds will from the lower-left in a moment. Once they pass or die, you can (and should) go left. Side Shot the survivors to the right and continue along.

They will be more swarms of bird-like enemies as you approach the clearing, all of which are readily dispatched with Side Shot and Lasers, then Rear Shot as time goes on. Other types of enemies will soon join the effort against you - mostly the cannon fodder-types of previous levels and bulging disc-type enemies. As you meet the second swarm of the latter, take note of the pickup holder nearby, who will yield another health pickup.

The swarm continues. Stay in the center, abuse Lasers, Side Shot, and Rear Shot, and dodge as necessary, though, with the types of enemies being thrown at you, there shouldn't be much to dodge. The enemies will switch mostly to birds that throw projectiles at you as you reach the large clearing, so feel free to go around and shoot them directly -- no enemies will come from behind for a while.

It's going to be mostly like that for a good while - shoot and dodge-what-you-can. The next big clearing switches it up to a large swarm of minor enemies, which you can deal with with Side Shot fairly readily in the first instance, Lasers in the second, and Side/Rear Shot in the third instance (coming from the bottom-right). Beware the occasional bird that pops up, usually along the right side, to throw a few projectiles on you.

You'll once more deal with more and more bird-like enemies that throw projectiles in the next large clearing. It'll be a brief swarm though, as the next and final boss is ahead.

LEVEL SIX BOSS

^s7|The boss.

To get more shooting time in, and therefore damage, you can always try to follow the boss and shoot at its "face", though be warned that this will induce higher levels of damage upon you, something you do not particularly want in this level - that is because this level is certain to not yield an extra life or even health from credits.

What's Next?

After finishing Level 6, you'll get a brief message from the shopkeeper. You will not be allowed to shop, and will immediately proceed back to Level 1. You will loop throughout the levels until you die. You will continue to keep all items and even your score as long as you evade the game over, and nothing changes between the playthroughs.

Shopping Strategies

  • Level 1: Focus first on Side Shot, Rear Shot if you lack it, and Autofire. Get a Super Mashwam and heal up some, too.
  • Level 2: If you can, buy a Laser. Otherwise, get Side/Rear Shot if you haven't yet!! Plenty of healing pickups appear early on in Level 3, so there's no need to buy for those.
  • Level 3: If possible, buy Laser. Otherwise, whatever you want.
  • Level 4: Buy a Laser if possible.
  • Level 5: Focus on extra lives and healing here.
  • Level 6: You can't exactly buy anything after this level...

NOTE

Remember to spend every credit you can at the shop! This game doesn't not "save up" your credits - if you don't spend any, they are rendered invalid for the rest of the game. It is very wise to spend everything!!

Items are listed here from left to right, top to bottom. Credits are earned for winning bosses and also earning points within a level. The shop is available at the end of a level, after the boss of said level, and, there, you are able to buy useful things, as shown below.

And, to the curious, the slots that are filled with "???" are not known to contain any item, no matter how high you can get your credits, through selling items or otherwise. I will note that, for now, the highest I've gotten is 19,980. And this is with as much perfect as I could manage on Level 5 (highest-profit level) (including with an Infinite Health cheat), and then selling a Rear Shot, Side Shot, Laser 3, and Cannon 2 (the highest possible sell value).
