Donations

While I do write all of my guides for free, it does take a lot of time and effort to put them together. If you're feeling generous and want to show your appreciation, I am gladly accepting donations. I don't know exactly what the donations will be used for, but just know that you would definitely be helping me make more quality FAQs! Even the smallest donation amounts are appreciated, and they are a great way to say how much you appreciate the work I do. Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers the GameBoy game known as Uno: Small World. This is hopefully-obviously based off of the card game we know as "Uno", one of the more extensive series of card games to date, getting new variations still every now and then.

It's been twenty years since this game's initial launch back in 1993 by International Games and Tomy. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GameBoy FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GameBoy game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is sort of how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Game Controls

Button Resultant Effects
D-Pad Move cursors.
A Button Confirm decisions.
B Button Call Uno.
Start Button Enter a pause menu where you can learn scores and rules.
Select Button It has a point during gameplay, but it's not needed. (Or known.)

From the Title Screen...

At the title screen, after the Uno cards move aside, go press the Start Button so you can move on.

^l1|

First up shall be this menu. There are three options. However, the third one has no seemingly viable option, at least given the contexts.

  • 1 Player: Generic one-player versus AI players gameplay. More on this later.
  • VS. Player: Requires a GameBoy Link Cable and the usual. Plays against a huamn.
  • ???

^l2|

Assuming you picked 1 Player mode, the above screen will appear. The options:

  • Traditional Uno: Your generic game of Uno.
  • Story Mode: Basically a series of themed Uno matches.
  • Alternative Uno: Basically just an aesthetically-different Uno.
  • Options: Mess with a number of options, if you wish.

After picking one of the first three options, you will move on to character selection. You can choose your player first, then the three AI players. No repeats are allowed.

^l3|

Finally, you get to pick the match conditions, as applicable. Press on one of the options and you can customize them. Use Up/Down to select an option, Left/Right to alternate digits, and the A/B Buttons to increase/decrease values. If all options are "0", then it seems it is just an infinite free play. Conditions may also be able to be compounded.

  • Games Played: Winner is the first with 0 ~ 29 wins.
  • Hands Played: Winner is determined after 0 ~ 179 hands.
  • Score Reached: Winner obtains 0 ~ 2,500 points first.

Playing Uno

^l4| The goal of this game is to discard every one of your cards. To do so, you will put them on the face-up discard pile next to the deck of cards - the discard pile is below the top-center text box, with the face-up card. The deck is next to it and the top card hidden by an "Uno" logo.

However, this discarded card must meet one of several conditions in relevance to the discard pile's top card:

  • Same number or symbol
  • Same color
  • The discarded card can also be a Wild/Wild Draw Four card

The definition of "color" in this game is not as clear as in traditional, real-life Uno with high-contrast colors, due to the graphical limitations of the GameBoy. As the screenshot at the top of this section depicts, there are still four colors (all displayed in the screenshot) - white, light gray, dark gray, and black.

If you don't have a playable card, then you must draw from the deck. If this drawn card is playable, you may play it. A text box will appear asking for your decision at this point - the left option is "play card", the right one is "get rid of card". Play circles on to the next person.

If you discard a card with a letter on it, certain effects could occur:

  • Skip: Marked with an "S", this card will make the next player in the cycle lose their turn.

  • Reverse: Marked with an "R", this card reverses the order. For example, if the order was A, B, C, D, and you are Player C and play a Reverse, then, instead of Player D going, Player B goes. Then Player A. Then Player D. And so on, until another Reverse reverses the order again.

  • Draw Two: Marked with a "D2", this card makes the next player skip a turn, and also draw two cards in the interim.

  • Basic Wild: This is marked with only the word "Wild" and is one of the darkest cards. This will change the color on the discard pile to the card player's chosen color.

  • Wild Draw Four: Your antithesis and best friend, this card looks like a Wild, but also has a "D4" on it. This will not only change the color on the discard pile, but force the next player to draw four cards and skip their turn.

Play generally circles around someone has lost all of their cards.

There is one key thing to remember. If you get rid of your second-to-last card, you have to call "Uno" or you'll have to draw cards if someone notices. To call Uno, press the B Button - you must do this when hovering over the card to be discarded, or you will gain two cards.
