Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers the GameBoy game known as Sports Illustrated: Golf Classic. Yeah, it's another generic golf game. =/

It's been twenty years since this game's initial launch back in 1993 by Unexpected Games and Malibu Games. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GameBoy FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GameBoy game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is sort of how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Game Controls

Button Resultant Effects
D-Pad Move cursors
A Button Confirm decisions
B Button Cancel decisions
Start Button Hold to view a password.
Select Button N/A

Before the Game

Once the game starts up, press the A Button to skip along to the game selection menus. First, you can opt to start a new game or restart an old one, the latter coming through a password. Assuming you start a new game, then you have several options. Note that there is no need for you to use multiple GameBoys, cartridges, etc., when using the multiplayer modes - you can just pass the GameBoy back-and-forth.

  • 1 Player Practice: Basically your own competitionless free play mode.
  • 2 Player Stroke: Use the stroke system while going against another human.
  • 2 Player Match: Use the match system while going against another human.

Next, you choose your player.

Player Name Skill Level Gender
N. Betts Amateur Female
E. Scott Amateur Male
I. Sands Professional Female
K. Komai Professional Male

Finally, you will choose a course to play on - Country Oaks or Clover Creek - and can use the D-Pad (Left/Right) to choose whichever hole you want to play on.

During the Game

As you enter the course hole, you'll see some initial information. At the right, you'll find, from top to bottom, the hole number, distance to the hole in yards, the par (scoring baseline in strokes), your stroke number, and current score. At the bottom is the player number, in-game avatar, and wind direction. This wind indicator is not your typical one - basically, the arrow points in the direction the wind is blowing, and the aneometer below it represents the strength of the wind (faster rotation means faster winds).

Press the A Button to continue. From here, you can choose your trajectory by moving the "+" sign with the D-Pad. The line from you (the white ball) to the cursor is an initial trajectory before wind and such take effect, so note that - if the wind is blowing east, for example, you may want to aim a bit west of the desired target. The distance to the "+" is in the lower-right corner.

Press the A Button to continue. First you will be able to choose your desired club.

Golf Club Name Approximate Range on Grass Approximate Minimum Distance on Grass
1DR (One Wood or Driver) 230 yards 45 yards
3WD (Three Wood) 200 yards 35 yards
5WD (Five Wood) 180 yards 30 yards
3IR (Three Iron) 170 yards 33 yards
4IR (Four Iron) 160 yards 30 yards
5IR (Five Iron) 150 yards 27 yards
6IR (Six Iron) 140 yards 25 yards
7IR (Seven Iron) 125 yards 23 yards
8IR (Eight Iron) 120 yards 20 yards
9IR (Nine Iron) 95 yards 15 yards
PW (Putting/Pitching Wedge) 75 yards 15 yards
SW (Sand/Bunker Wedge) 55 yards 10 yards
PT (Putter) 15 yards Less than 1 yard

Press the A Button to confirm your club, then we will get to select our spin settings. Depending on which D-Pad buttons you press, you'll affect the ball's trajectory in various ways:

  • Up: Induces topspin, increasing distance and speed, but lowers stopping ability.
  • Down: Induces backspin, slowing the ball down, letting it travel less and stop easily.
  • Left: Makes the ball curve to the left.
  • Right: Makes the ball curve to the right.

After this, you need to press and hold the A Button to determine the power of the shot. The longer you hold it, the more power there is - in other words, the further back your golfer goes with the club, the more power. However, there is a limit beyond which you are likely to have erratic shots. Once you let go of the A Button, thereby confirming your power, you'll need to press the A Button again for the point when you hit the ball. If you're early on pressing the A Button (ideally, you want it as the club touches the ball), the ball curves to the left; likewise, it goes to the right if you're late.

This will pretty much continue until you get on the green, the area surrounding the hole. There, you will be forced to use the putter. The shooting mechanics are the same, except you don't get to use spin or determine the ball's snap - you just choose where to aim and how much power to use. Once you get the ball in the hole, you are scored, given overall stats for other players, and move on to the next of the eighteen holes.

Scoring

Each given hole will have a set "par" on it. The par is the number of shots it ideally takes to finish a hole. If you go under this, you earn points (your score is negative, but that's good), and if you go over, you lose points (you gain positive points). Hitting exactly par neither hurts or helps you.

The number of shots you take can also be affected by two other things - water hazards and out-of-bounds area. Both are considered out-of-bounds. This bad shot will count against you, and you'll be penalized an additional shot. For example, if you hit the water on your first shot, consider the next shot you take your third and not the second.

At the end of the hole, the number of shots you take, minus the par, is your score. If such is positive, you went over (bogey); if negative, you did good by going under (birdie, eagle, albatross). And, of course, par is neither good or bad.

For the purposes of this game, you'll be using basic stroke play rules. That is to say, whoever has the better score at the end of eighteen holes wins. The only reason I mention this is that some use a win-loss basis rather than an overall score, and this is just to remove confusion.

To the curious, the relatively official names for various shots:

Name of Shot Score Changes
Hole-in-One (Par) - 1
Albatross -3
Eagle -2
Birdie -1
Par ア0
Bogey +1
Double Bogey +2
Triple Bogey +3
