Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers Bio Force Ape. Bio Force Ape has a bit of an interesting history in conjunction with the NES FAQ Completion Project. Its very existence was mentioned little and often questioned, having only really been mentioned in an April issue of Nintendo Power once - obviously, that's not the best time to convince anyone of something's legitimacy. (Ah, GameFAX, where art thou?) Still, eventually, it got added to the GameFAQs site. Bio Force Ape does admittedly not exist to the typical game player, being only, even now, a cancelled prototype of a game - still, it's pretty amazing. Most notably, the scrolling is fast.

I guess this game is designed for speed-running, personally. Given the fast Sonic the Hedgehog-esque scrolling and the continual mentioning of time at the end of the three levels, it makes one wonder. Still, it's a fun game - one of the better 2D platformers I've played.

It's been over twenty years since this game's development back in 1991 by Seta. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the NES FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single NES game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides. So many games, in fact, that all of the North American games have been covered, as have the European games, leaving only those that are homebrews and mostly those released in Japan and the Koreas.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Walkthrough

Level 1

^l1|Level map.

When this level begins, you'll quickly fall from a roof after taking damage - a factor you have no choice in doing. So begins one example of how quickly this game can scroll. O_o At the bottom, defeat the enemy nearby with punches, then head right and into the building. Jump on the light-green platform to go waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay back up. Once you stop, head to the right and onto another platform. Wheeee~!

Jump into the pit to the right to free-fall, then fly along another platform. Go onto the path above and to the right and you'll soon see some shirtless man. Show him how the hairless doth fall - punch him a bunch. Continue right to find another, and another. At the end of the path, get onto the ledge above you and head left. You won't encounter much of anything, mostly just a boxing kangaroo. Again, punch a bunch. Further left is another platform to ride.

At the end of the ride, go into the depress to the right and head along the linear path to another platform - you'll probably find another enemy on the way to beat dressed as a bee; just punch his lights out. (And I think I just ran out of punching euphemisms.) Jump on the green platform and hold A to bounce even higher so you can go around to the other side of the wall. Proceed to the right and beat up the enemies as you go - mostly shirtless dudes thinking they can beat a biochemically-engineered ape again.

Eventually, you'll find a pit at the end of the path. Enter it and you'll fall onto a platform, assuming you didn't touch the D-Pad. (Do not touch the D-Pad; going left makes you fight a veritable swarm of shirtless guys. Numbers can overpower science, sadly.)

Once off of the platform, head left and climb onto the ledges next to the pit. You will see a rope swinging to the right; jump on it, then jump off as you swing to the other side. There, you will need to repeat that process. On the other side of this second rope, you either will land in a pit or the ledges next to it - you'll be fine with just landing in it; there's nothing of note near it. At the bottom of the pit, go right and use the bouncy platform by holding A to jump over the wall nearby. Continue to the right and you'll find a bouncy platform. Use it to reach another, then get onto the ledges to the right. Ignore the rope to the right; it causes a profitless loop.

On the other side, onto the ground, simply continue right and into the pit. Down here, you'll find a blue ninja-like enemy. What I would do to beat him is get in the corner and use low-kicks as he jumped at me. He is quite annoying, but ... well, yeah, that's it. You don't have to fight him; there is a set of blocks near where you landed that you're meant to cross the gap to the left of them with, which you can do.

On the other side, go left and you'll find some more mid-air blocks to use to jump across a gap. Do other to get over the next wall. Continue leftward and you'll find a gap in the middle of the path. If you need some health rilling, ignore it and cross the gap to find some platforms, one of which has a drink (health refill) on it. Either way, you'll need to go into the gap. At the bottom, go left and onto the platform there for some ice cream to refill your health.

Then go right for a looong while, then into the pit at the end; you'll find another blue-ninja enemy. Same logic should work here - get in the corner and do low kicks. Afterwards, head to the left and cross the next gap with the rope, as usual, although it's really a moot point. If you miss or something, just go left and ascend the platforms, like you'll probably have to do if you use the rope anyways. To climb up to the long one near the wall, you'll need to jump while holding Down and Left.

Once up there, go left. Past the pit, on a platform, you'll find a bone of chicken for some health; then go into the pit. At the bottom, defeat the blue ninja-like enemies if you want, then proceed to the right. You'll find a nother platform to use for bouncing over the wall (hold the A Button). Head to the far right and press the Up Button in front of the doorway to go into the back hall.

At the end of the path, go right and use the series of bouncing platforms appropriately - again, hold the A Button to increase jump height. At the top, head to the left platform and simply walk off - do not move when in mid-air, or you'll likely hit damaging mines; just go along the right wall. At the ground, to the left, press Up on the D-Pad while near the obvious doorway to use an elevator. At the top, head right. Defeat the enemy there - punches or kicks work fine, though kicks often hit more.

Afterwards, proceed to the far right and simply jump into the gap.

Level 2

^l2|Level map.

This level begins with a cart-riding sequence; it's mostly aesthetic and you have no control, so sit back for the ride.

At the end, go right and into the lower area. Defeat the enemy there and and a platform will appear. Ride it, then jump rightward and into the next pit. Defeat the enemy there - it's easy if you get him into a corner and punch rapidly - and another platform will appear. Bounce off of it and rightward onto the next platform. Ride the cart.

At the end, roll left into the next battle area. Defeat the enemy and another platform will appear. (Note that you can roll through the lower-left corner here to find an area with a health pickup.) Once the platform appears, ride it and jump left at the top to find another pit. Defeat the boxing kangaroo there. Afterwards, another platform appears. Bounce leftward from it and ride the carts again.

At the end, in the next pit, defeat another enemy and use the platform to continue on through another cart ride.

At the end of this ride, defeat the enemy in teh pit and use the bouncing platform to head left into the next pit. Defeat the enemy there. (Do note that you can roll through the lower-left corner of this pit for another healing item.) Use the new platform to ride up, then jump left. Roll into the next pit area and defeat the enemy there to make another platform appear. Bounce from it and ride the cart again.

On the other side, go right and defeat the enemy there. You'll see a platform in mid-air; run and jump onto it. From there, leap right into the next pit, where another enemy to fight resides. Defeat him and another platform will appear. Use it, then leap right in mid-air into another cart ride. At the end, you'll find the end of the level.

Level 3

^l3|Level map.

MAP KEY:

To be clear, this is how that map works...

  • Green squares mark teleporters.
  • Black squares with white text mark teleporter outputs.
  • Green squares and black square numbers are connected: Teleporter #1 goes to Output #1, for example.

Begin the level by going right and you'll soon reach a fan. There, it will be blowing upward, meaning you can use its gust as a way to get up higher. Do so while holding the A Button to get even higher. Land on the left side of the gap and go along to the end of the path to trigger a switch. Note that, on the way, there will be a blue ground-hugging enemy that must be jumped over; switches, also, can be triggered with the A Button.

After having done this, return back towards the gap and leap over it, or use the fan again, to get to the right side. There, go to the far right and into the pit. There, proceed to the left and beat the greenish enemy if desired, although jumping over him makes things a lot easier. Then head to the teleporter and use it.

On the other side, go to the right and you'll see a greenish platform in mid-air. Ride it up, then jump onto the ledge to the right. Go along the path, jumping over the blue enemy when he comes along, and you'll find a switch at the end. Trigger it. Go left and back below to the pit, then head right. Go through the teleporter at the end of the path.

Here, go to the right and into the pit - as you fall, hold Right on the D-Pad and you'll reach a once-locked alcove. The only feature there is the switch to trigger; after having done so, finish your fall back in the pit and use the teleporter again. Back here, go right and get on the green platform, then, after the ride's over, leap to the left ledge. Continue left from there and go through the teleporter.

On the other side, go right and, like with the previous switch, go into the pit whilst holding Right on the D-Pad to find another alcove. Trigger the switch within and continue your fall, this time holding Left on the D-Pad. You should reach another teleporter; use it. In this area, you'll need to go right and cross the platforms by jumping. However, these platforms also get lower while you're on them, so you need to jump quickly! On the other side is a teleporter for you to use.

On the other side of that teleporter, go right and you'll find a series of vertically-moving platforms. Here, you want to jump on one of them, then jump to the next - you usually can see its location if you scoot enough to the right. Do note that it is best for you to jump when the next platform is lower than you. On the other side is a teleporter for you to use.

After going through it, you'll find yourself in a long fall, soon to be cushioned by a fan. Here, you'll want to hold the A Button and Left on the D-Pad as you ascend to reach a bouncy green platform, from which you can continue holding Left and A to get onto the main ledge. There, go left and into the pit. Defeat or avoid the enemy there, then proceed further left and into the teleporter.

Here, go right and move past the floating mines by rolling under them to find a switch. Trigger it and continue on. Jump over the next two mines and go into the teleporter further ahead. In the next area, you'll find five different teleporters - go rightward and use the middle one, the third one you reach. On the other side, you'll need to go left and you'll then traverse a series of conveyor belts. Obviously, these conveyor belts can either increase or decrease your speed, depending on how they're turning (usually against you). Cross them carefully and continue on into the next teleporter.

On the other side, to the right are three more teleports. Again, the middle one is the answer: this time, the second one you pick. On the other side of it, you'll immediately begin being blown upward by a fan. Hold the A Button and use this momentum to climb over the wall to the right. For a while, you'll then need to cross platforms to climb over walls. These platforms are actually rotating blocks: one side is spiky, and the other is not. You need to wait to jump on the non-spiky side, which functions as a stepping stone to get over the wall.

After having repeated that a fair few times, you'll then simply need to proceed right, where you'll find the rocket. Here, you'll probably across one reason why the game was not officially released. For now, this is also the final boss fight, for it ends the game right here. However, this fight has no difficulty in it. Attack the boss once, and he may fling you aside and reveal himself to be an ape like you. However, he won't do anything else, so simply attack again to win the game. Congratulations, I suppose.
