While I do write all of my guides for free, it does take a lot of time and effort to put them together. If you're feeling generous and want to show your appreciation, I am gladly accepting donations. I don't know exactly what the donations will be used for, but just know that you would definitely be helping me make more quality FAQs! Even the smallest donation amounts are appreciated, and they are a great way to say how much you appreciate the work I do. Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers F-1 Race. ... Well, to be frank, I shouldn't have to mention much more than that - Formula-1 racing is a genre often found on older consoles, and is quite generic. This game holds true to this, sadly, but it yet also fun. Kind of an odd feeling, I suppose.

It's been over twenty years since this game's initial launch back in 1990 by Nintendo. (According to the title screen, anyways. I have doubts that they would make such a generic game, then succeed so well at Mario Kart.) And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Pre-Race Details

Modes

At the title screen, you have three modes from which you can choose.

  • Grand Prix: A serial sequence of races through the eight race courses.
  • Time Trial: See how fast you can go on any track. Can include obstacles as well!
  • Multi Game: This mode basically requires two GameBoys and they must be linked.

Vehicle

There are two cars from which you can choose. Each have differing stats. Generally speaking, given the below stats, Type A is your general go-to car, and is especially good on tracks with straightaways, due to its high amount of boost and boost speed. Then again, Type B is good on tracks with few straightaways, because it is more constant in its speed, higher than Type A's. However, boosts are still worth using, although you should only use Type B on tracks with few straightaways.

Do note that boost capacities differ depending on the chosen track.

After having chosen your desired vehicle, you can go on to the racetrack.

Statistic Type A Type B Superior Vehicle
Maximum Speed 280 km/h 320 km/h Type B (by ~14%)
Maximum Boost Speed 360 km/h 350 km/h Type A (by ~3%)
Boost Capacity (Australia) 70 liters 60 liters Type A (by ~16%)
Boost Capacity (Canada) 170 liters 160 liters Type A (by ~6%)
Boost Capacity (U.S.A.) 140 liters 110 liters Type A (by ~27%)
Boost Capacity (Portugal) 150 liters 170 liters Type B (by ~13%)
Boost Capacity (Japan) 80 liters 70 liters Type A (by ~14%)
Boost Capacity (Brazil) 160 liters 130 liters Type A (by ~23%)
Boost Capacity (U.S.S.R.) 230 liters 220 liters Type A (by ~5%)
Boost Capacity (India) 220 liters 230 liters Type B (by ~5%)

Race Tracks

General Notes

  • Given that each race course is linear, there is little need to give little other than a map. And some of these tips.

  • When it comes to turning, 280 km/h can handle turns like those on the southwest/southeast parts of the Australia track. Any sharper or any faster, or both, and you'll need to slow down. You can readily do this with the B Button and letting off on the jet boosters. You'll want to speed up again as you come out of a turn. Also try to stay on the inside curve of a turn - in other words, with a curve going to your right, stay on the right side of the track.

  • There are no shortcuts. Don't try to find or make any.

  • Always use the boosters on the straightaways, like at the north side of the Australia course.

  • When it comes to the Grand Prix, it seems you need to place first in each race to proceed on to the next of them.

  • Finally, the below tracks are listed in the order you encounter them during the Grand Prix mode.

Canada

Egypt

To note, Egypt's track is only playable as the final race of the Grand Prix. Even after beating the game, this track will not be made available in the Time Trial mode of the game.

Cameos

I'm not entirely sure why I'm including this in this guide, but, anyways... Given that Nintendo made this game, it's not all that surprising they'd reference themselves quite significantly in one of their first racing games ever. This mainly comes through post-race cameos after racing successfully (i.e. first place) in the Grand Prix. Here are the respective cameos.

  • Track #1 (Australia): Toad, from the Mario series
  • Track #2 (Canada): Luigi, from the Mario series. (His clothes are lighter than Mario's.)
  • Track #3 (U.S.A.): Princess Peach or Princess Toadstool, from the Mario series.
  • Track #4 (Portugal): Link, from the The Legend of Zelda series.
  • Track #5 (Japan): Mario, from the Mario series.
  • Track #6 (Brazil): Samus Aran, from the Metroid series.
  • Track #7 (U.S.S.R.): Pit, from the Kid Icarus series.
  • Track #8 (India): Donkey Kong, from the Donkey Kong series and numerous Mario games.
  • Track #9 (Egypt): Everyone, plus Bowser from the Mario series.
