Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers Initial D Gaiden - another generic racing game for the GameBoy, released only in Japan. There's nothing really worth noting in it, beyond that it seems to have more story to it than most other racing games.

It's been almost fifteen years since this game's initial launch back in 1998. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Woo for Japanese lingo, huh? Anyways, you are given four options. To proceed on to the next step, you'll need to choose Grand Prix or Time Trial. If opting for the former, note that the top option from that menu continues gameplay; the bottom starts the game anew.

  • Grand Prix: A serial set of races through each of the Tracks, where you must beat an opponent in each race.
  • Time Trial: Race alone for the best course time!
  • Multiplayer: This will require two cartridges of the game, two GameBoys, and link cable for human-on-human action.
  • Options: Configure the following options. With respective order to the Japanese text...
    • Records: See the records currently set for each track.
    • Sound Test: Listen to the music/sound effect tracks, as well as opt to use background music.
    • Delete File: At the very least, it deletes all of your Time Trial mode records.

Car Customization

When you come here, you can choose from pretty much any car in the game, at least in Grand Prix. Time Trial, to my knowledge, will limit you to a mere two, although Grand Prix unveils the whole stock. Here's what I know of each. First, they are rated on the following, with scores being out of five potential points:

  • Handling: Ability to take turns responsively, and therefore less likely to run off the road. The higher, the better.
  • Gear: Basically, a relative height of maximum speed, although that may vary on transmission.
  • Car Rating: The average of the two scores, taken as an overall rating on the car.

Also, cars are simply listed in the order they appear in the Grand Prix menu; initial car is #1, press Right on the D-Pad to find #2, and so on. Again, remember that the maximum score is "5", and the lowest is "1".

CAR CUSTOMIZATION DETAILS
Car Number Handling Gear/Max Speed Average Score/Grade
Car #1 1 2 1.5 F
Car #2 3 1 2.0 D
Car #3 2 3 2.5 C-
Car #4 1 3 2.0 D
Car #5 2 4 3.0 C
Car #6 4 5 4.5 A-
Car #7 5 2 3.5 C+
Car #8 3 3 3.0 C
Car #9 4 4 4.0 B
Car #10 3 2 2.5 C-
Car #11 3 4 3.5 B-

After having selected a car, you will then get to select a transmission. This will primarily affect how you shift between gears. See, each car will have a few gears, which determine its maximum speed. You can have an "AT" (automatic) transmission to do the transition between gears smoothly, without effort from you whatsoever, although these tend to be slower. There is also an "MT" (manual) transmission, which makes you use the Up/Down Buttons on the D-Pad to downshift/upshift gears, respectively. Upshifting can only be done around the time the speed gauge at the bottom of the screen in a race begins to turn black, although downshifting into a slower gear is always possible.

With manual transmissions being a little faster and easier for you deal with on turns, I recommend manual transmissions. With regard to the type of car, I recommend the sixth one, which is the best of the group.

Tracks

General Info and Tips

Each of these tracks is a linear circuit. Unlike most racing games, except perhaps some tracks in Mario Kart 7 (3DS) and a few others, each track has a distinct start, and an end further away from it - you don't do laps, but just race ot the end of the track. Like most racing games of its day, Initial D Gaiden provides no shortcuts or any way to alleviate the monotony of a race - therefore, a map of the track is quite sufficient.

The main thing when racing is to know how to turn properly. Generally, you always want to be on the inside of the turn - that is to say, if you're turning right, stay on the right side of the road. This is especially true in tracks like Mako Sayuki where you often U-turn a lot. With any turn greater than ninety degrees, you'll also want to slow down some as you approach the turn. Otherwise, you're likely to run off of the track due to motion and inertia - you can also note that turning too hard too fast will make you spin out to the point that you really lose a lot of time in the race. When I slow down, I usually either just let off of the A Button, downshift gears, or tap the B Button a little bit.

Anyways, that about covers it for the tracks. There are four tracks total. In the Grand Prix mode, you have to beat your opponent on the track to the goal line; in a Time Trial, you simply race against the clock. For reference, here are the preset records - they're the same for Akina, Night Kids, Red Suns, and Mako Sayuki.

Ranking Preset Time Record
1st 2 minutes, 0 seconds
2nd 2 minutes, 10 seconds
3rd 2 minutes, 20 seconds
4th 2 minutes, 30 seconds
5th 2 minutes, 40 seconds
