Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers Othello World. Othello World is an old GameBoy game based off the older board game Othello - most Americans probably know this more popularly as Reversi, for whatever reason. The games are nevertheless the same and are personally among my favorite board games, this being one of intricate strategy.

It's been almost twenty years since this game's initial launch back in 1994 by Tsukuda Original. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Controls

Button	Resultant Effects
D-Pad	Move cursor.
A Button	Confirm decisions; place chips.
B Button	Decline decisions.
Start Button	N/A
Select Button	Open pause menu for configuration.

Initial Configuration

You will begin at a menu with four options aligned in a two-by-two grid. Opt to "Game Start" when you're ready.

• Black Player: Choose an avatar for the person playing the black chips. Note that you must choose "You" for human players.
• White Player: Choose an avatar for the person playing the white chips. Note that you must choose "You" for human players.
• Music: Turn the background themes on or off.
• Time Limit: Play for five, ten, or twenty minutes, or play infinitely.

Playing the Game

Othello is actually quite a simple game. You will begin with four chips on the 8x8 grid - two are white and two are black. Your goal is to place your chips in such a way that they "sandwich" pieces of the opposite color between the new piece and another piece of yours. The pieces "sandwiched" can only be directly horizontal, vertical, or diagonal from each other.

For example...

Consider points X, Y, and Z in the previous diagram. They represent potential locations for your next chip, whereas 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 represent those already placed. The "#" represent your opponent's pieces.

• Placing at point X will bring you two pieces between X and 5.
• Placing at point Y will bring you two pieces between Y and 3.
• Placing at point Z brings you the two from Z to 1, two from Z to 4, and four from Z to 6.

Regarding the entry from point Z, you can indeed compound these "sandwiches" to bring you pieces. But what exactly does that mean? It basically means you turn the "sandwiched" pieces to your color.

The game ends when all 64 squares are filled, or no legitimate moves are possible by either side. Whoever has more pieces of their color at that point will be declared winner.
