Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers Taikyoku Renju. Taikyoku Renju is a video game based off another mostly-Japanese board game, for which I do not know the name despite seeing (and loving!) it so much. I suppose it can be readily analogized to the games of Tic-Tac-Toe and Connect Four, although this is definitely better and more strategic, as winners will conenct five!

It's been nearly twenty-five years since this game's initial launch back in 1989 by Towachiki. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Controls

Button Resultant Effects
D-Pad Move cursor.
A Button Confirm decisions; place chips.
B Button Decline decisions; give up.
Start Button Pause/unpause gameplay.
Select Button Open pause menu for configuration.

Initial Configuration

You will begin at a language-selection menu (the title screen). Simply use the D-Pad to move the cursor and make your preferred language be colored black, then press the Start Button. You'll then arrive at a screen with six options.

  • Level #: Play against a computer of increasing difficulty (1, 2, 3, where 1 is easiest) for ten matches, then get ranked on ability.
  • Match A/B: Seems to be some option requiring GameBoys linked with cables, something I lack.
  • Renju Problems: Basically this game's randomized puzzle mode.

Playing the Game

This game is quite simple. It will take place on a 14-by-14 grid, where you only play where two lines intersect. (Said interesection can be in the shape of a "+", "T", or a corner.) You will move the cursor with the D-Pad and place a chip of your color (white or black - you're told before the game; otherwise, you're black). Then your opponent will place his chip, and so on and so forth. You can play anywhere on the board, so long as that space is not occupied by another chip.

The goal of this game is to connect five chips of your color in a straight row, vertically, diagonally, or horizontally. The main strategy for this game is to watch your opponent's moves. Look around where he places his last-placed chip - if he is still three or more chips away from getting all five, ignore him and proceed with your own strategy. However, if needs two, you're in trouble - and, remember, there can be a space between those chips as well. For example, if "#" is a black chip...

 # # # _ _ # _ # _ # # # _ _ # # _ _ # #

 # # _ # _ _ # # _ # _ # _ # # _ _ # # #

 _ # # # _ # _ # # _
... your oponent can still get all five tiles by filling in those blanks. These are admittedly easier to block, sometimes - all you'd have to do is stick one of your chips in those blanks - but you also have to consider that there could be multiple plans going on. Basically, deliberately block your opponent when he has three in a row, and use your best judgment regarding ulterior motives otherwise.

For you, you may want to try to play two separate "battlefields", so to speak. I find playing two tries at five-in-a-row parallel to each other works pretty well; I tend to separate mine by two or three units.

The game will end when someone gets five tiles lined up in a straight row, or when 100 tiles (50 by both players) have been played.
