Introduction

Welcome to another one of my FAQs. This particular FAQ covers Renju Club. To be honest, I'm actually surprised I FAQed this, and yet that I didn't do it sooner. I had played this game several times before, trying to figure out how it worked, and then I realized - when nostalgically looking through my FAQs in the midst of an NES mapping project - that I had an FAQ for Taikyoku Renju, a very similar game. It didn't take me long to figure out exactly how this all worked after that. =P Anyways, Renju Club plays a lot like the aforementioned, and is essentially a Japanese version of "Connect Four", just where you line up five chips, not four, so it can be interesting.

It's been nearly twenty years since this game's initial launch back in 1996 by Hect. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Start-Up

At the title screen, press Start to reach a menu with two options.

  • Top: This option plays an exhibition match against the computer or a human player. Should you choose to play the computer, you can then configure their difficulty level (1, 2, or 3, where 1 is the easiest) before beginning play.
  • Bottom: This allows you to solve puzzles based on the board game where you must make the most advantageous move in each set (and thus they are quite simple).

Playing the Game

This game is quite simple. It will take place on a 14-by-14 grid, where you only play where two lines intersect. (Said interesection can be in the shape of a "+", "T", or a corner.) You will move the cursor with the D-Pad and place a chip of your color (white or black - you're told before the game; otherwise, you're black). Then your opponent will place his chip, and so on and so forth. You can play anywhere on the board, so long as that space is not occupied by another chip.

The goal of this game is to connect five (or more!) chips of your color in a straight row: vertically, diagonally, or horizontally. The main strategy for this game is to watch your opponent's moves. Look around where he places his last-placed chip - if he is still three or more chips away from getting all five, ignore him and proceed with your own strategy. However, if needs two, you're in trouble - and, remember, there can be a space between those chips as well. For example, if "#" is a black chip and "_" represents where nothing has been placed...

   # # # _ _ # _ # _ # # # _ _ # # _ _ # #

   # # _ # _ _ # # _ # _ # _ # # _ _ # # #

   _ # # # _ # _ # # _
... your oponent can still get all five tiles by filling in those blanks. These are admittedly easier to block, sometimes - all you'd have to do is stick one of your chips in those blanks - but you also have to consider that there could be multiple plans going on. Basically, deliberately block your opponent when he has three in a row, and use your best judgment regarding ulterior motives otherwise.

Then again, you can try how I do it: passively aggressive. Essentially do nothing but block your opponent after some time, and absolutely nothing but that. Why? It frustrates human players and can cause inevitable flaws in the CPU's logic because they begin to run out of good moves. It will in turn allow you to control their moves if you play it right (as some "free" moves will open up when there's absolutely no strategy or logic they're playing when placing chips), for you can begin to put pieces in strategic positions, predict their moves, and then place a blocking piece right in the middle of your strategy. It usually takes a while - typically 125+ moves in my usage - but it rarely fails.

The game will end when someone gets five or more tiles lined up in a straight row, or all spaces are filled. It's a simple game, yet one that clearly can be quite deep, eh?
