Introduction

Hello, and welcome to yet another one of my more recent GB FAQs (making almost five or six this month). This FAQ will cover Peke to Poko no Daruman Busters. This game is a somewhat-recently translated title for the GameBoy, and it's ... well, it's essentially just a decent puzzle game. I don't need much more motivation than that to FAQ it: I can understand the language, and I like the game. My standards are SO high. =P Anyways.

It's been over twenty years since this game's launch in 1991 by Banpresto. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Game Controls

Button Resultant Effects
D-Pad Move up and down along the sides.
A Button Fire blocks from the right side.
B Button Fire blocks from the left side.
Start Button Pause/unpause gameplay.
Select Button N/A

Game Start-Up

When you reach the title screen, press the A Button to proceed to the next screen. There, you can opt to play a one- or two-player game. Two-player games, however, will require two GameBoys, two cartridges, and a link cable; I do not have the necessary materials, so I am unable to test this.

Assuming you pick to play a single-player game, you will then get to another screen. Along the left side of the screen, you can pick the game speed; from top to bottom, they are "High", "Medium", and "Low" speeds. In the middle, you can choose to begin on the designated level: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, or 7, with each increasing the difficulty. Finally, at the right, you will see three music notes; you can pick amongst those to alter the background music. Then press Start to begin gameplay.

Game Overview

^l1|The playing field.

An explanation of how to play would perhaps be most appropriate. First, I will explain the game interface. At the far right side of the screen, you'll find two important details: the timer (you lose when it hits zero), and the level. At the bottom, you'll see the score, while the blocks are the next blocks each column will get. Along the side of each column are the bricks you - the characters at the outer sides of each column - can fire. At the top is the typical damsel in distress; if the monster in the middle of the screen touches her (or any monster, when there are multiple ones), you also lose.

The object of the game, thus, is simple: defeat the monster while saving the girl. The main method in which you'll do so is firing blocks. Blocks can be fired by both characters: the left character is controlled with B, and the right one with A, and you can move the characters up/down with the D-Pad to change their height. (They move in sync, however, so you can't cover multiple levels.) Blocks fired will go straight across the playing field until they hit a monster or another block. (The rightmost and leftmost columns will always be filled with blocks, giving you a limitless supply.) If a block is hit, the block you shot will occupy its spot, with the block that was there moving one space in the direction of the shot.

So, how would one defeat the monster? It's pretty simple: you need to remove blocks so that the monster touches the floor, and you remove blocks by matching them in pairs. It doesn't matter if the pairs are made vertically or horizontally, so long as they're not diagonal. Once the monster touches the ground, he is destroyed; once all are destroyed, the level is won and you counter on to the next one.

There aren't many tips I can give, to be honest; it's a simple matching game, after all. The main thing is that you should never let a row get entirely filled up. If a row is filled up, and you can't make a pair on that row, it's effectively stuck and you need to cycle through the blocks until a pair is made. It would be best to find two blocks that would be a pair in both columns and fire them at each other, so nothing really changes, until that block pops up. I also find it best to focus on removing the blocks just underneath the monster, slowly forcing him down to the ground.

There's not much else to it, really.
