Introduction

Whelp, looks like I'll complete my third FAQ for the night... Anyways, welcome to another FAQ of mine. This one will cover Sea Battle ... which is basically just a rip-off of Battleship. Really. That's about it. It adds some unique aspects, but there's not much to differentiate it from the commonly-sold board game. =/

It's been over fifteen years since this game's launch in 1998 by Infogrames. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Game Controls

Button Resultant Effects
D-Pad Move cursors.
A Button Fire.
B Button Cancel/retract choices; rotate ships in positioning.
Start Button N/A
Select Button N/A

Game Start-Up

When the game begins to the point where you have control, there will be several languages you can pick from to play in: with respect to the order in which they are shown, that would be Dutch, English, Spanish, and French. Pick whichever you prefer to play in, the press A to proceed from the title screen.

At the starting menu, there will be three options:

  • One Player: Play a single-player game versus the computer
  • Two Player: Play a two-player game wherein the GameBoy is passed around
  • Two Player with Link: Play a two-player game where each player uses their own GameBoy and cartridge connected by a link cable

After that, there are a few more choices; the details on each will be discussed on their own sections.

You then pick how many ships you want for a Standard Game and get to position them; the board size and fleet positions in Extra; and the fleet and their positions in the Battle games.

Ship Analyses

This section is mostly for those playing one of the Battle modes (hence the game's limits, skills, and effects thereof, which are no use knowing in a Standard/Extra Game). In any case, here are the ships in the game, their length (and thus, the hits they can withstand), and their various Battle mode stats.

Ship Type Battle Limit Length Battle Skill Skill Quantity Skill Effect
Super Carrier 1 5 Triple Shot Infinite Fire 3 shots on your turn
Battle Ship 1 4 Double Shot Infinite Fire 2 shots on your turn
Standard Carrier 1 5 Double Shot 5 Fire 2 shots on your turn
Missile Submarine 1 4 Missile 4 Standard 1x1 shot, just limited quantity
Fleet Submarine 2 3 Torpedo 2 Standard 1x1 shot, just limited quantity
Light Carrier 2 3 Double Shot 4 Fire 2 shots on your turn
Cruiser 2 3 Cross Shot 2 Hits five tiles in a "+" pattern
Frigate 2 3 Square Shot 1 Hits a 3x3 square
Destroyer 3 2 Depth Charge 2 Standard 1x1 shot, just limited quantity

Standard Game

When you begin the game, you will first need to move your fleet around. Strategically- and mathematically-speaking, there is no right strategy in which to deal with them, much like in Battleship (if you've played that). Psychologically, though, you can screw with people by crowding your ships together rather than spreading them out. Even so, it's up to you: nothing will be truly more advantageous than another strategy. Use Up/Down on the D-Pad to choose a ship, then A to pick it, then move it around (D-Pad; B to rotate), and A to select that spot. Press Start to begin gameplay.

In this mode, it's a simple Battleship-like mode. You will have a 10x10 grid laid out. Each turn, you must pick one of the 100 spots to be the one to fire upon for that turn; use the D-Pad and A to do so. After, whether hit water or hit a ship shall be indicated. Early in the game, it's common for most to simply fire at random in the water until they find something; there's no particular strategy in doing so other than to spread out or to use a grid search pattern. Again, seeing as their ship arrangement is random, there's no advantage to either.

Gameplay continues in this manner for a while, everyone swapping single-turn choices. The goal of the game is to hit all of the enemy ships and to destroy them. Once you hit one, you can be certain that it lies on a horizontal or vertical line spawning from where the hit was, making it easier to destroy with a little testing. Once someone's ships are all gone, they lose, and the game is over.

Extra Game

Before the game, you will begin by picking the board size: 8x8 (64 tiles), 12x12 (144), or 16x16 (256). As you can tell, the size of the board will mostly just lengthen the game, but it may have other advantages if you know your opponent's strategy. In any case, you'll then position your fleet after, the size being proportional to the board size, obviously.

Other than those things, it is no different from a Standard Game.

Battle Game

This game is where things get complex. You can choose eight ships of your own to battle with, among all kinds - see the Ship Analyses section for details on that. Which ships to pick are up to you, but I recommend the following set-up:

  • Super Carrier: "Bulk" for your side, plus the Triple Shot works when you run out of power shots
  • Standard Carrier: Bulk, mostly
  • Battle Ship: Just additional bulk
  • Missile Submarine: Additional bulk
  • Cruiser x2: The Cross Shot hits five tiles at once
  • Frigate x2: The Square Shot hits nine tiles at once

This set-up gives you the best of the opening strategies in the use of several Cross/Square Shots to quickly work on seeking out ships. Should a ship be found, quickly switch to the Super Carrier for attacking (since it can easily test out multiple directions for the ship's lay, or just otherwise help to decimate a known ship without the "search" shots). Eventually, the Super Carrier will be your main source for offense, and your Battle Ship if it's destroyed. The ability to search out multiple tiles will be invaluable to you. Plus, the remaining ships that aren't as special are the bulkiest you can get for this set-up, making it harder for you to be destroyed.

In any case, do as you will in that regard.

Gameplay will rely on the ship's special skills more than usual. To select a ship to use on a given turn, simply use the D-Pad and A to choose a ship, then find the spot you want to hit and press A; in the case of the Double/Triple Shots, you can choose multiple spots, but the others are usually automatic area effects if anything. Then your opponent goes for their turn, and so on.

It is essentially a Standard Game with an element of strategy added in as you can choose your own fleet and choose whose abilities to rely on most. Like usual, the game will end when the opponent's ships or your own have been destroyed, with the winner being the last one standing.

Super Battle Game

There is no real difference between this and a normal Battle Game. The main things I noticed were special animation sequences when a ship prepares to fire and is sunk, and the AI seemed to be harder than normal.
