Introduction

Welcome to another guide of mine, this one (initially) quickly following another NES FAQ (that one for Minelvaton Saga). This game I'm covering is Sansara Naga, yet another RPG that has yet to be FAQed in any way. And, to be honest, I can understand why that is, though why it was never localized a bit into the U.S. ... eh, that's beyond me; maybe it's just me, but I love JRPGs, and I love this. <3 In any case, Sansara Naga, at first glance, looked like another one of those crap Dragon Quest clones that have been plaguing the bottom of the "unFAQed bin" of GameFAQs; it took me a few hours to think differently. While there's a lot that could be analogized to DQ, there's a lot, too, that cannot, most prominent being the dragon-breeding system in the game. Anyhow.

It's been over twenty-five years since this game's launch in 1990 by Victor Music Industries. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the NES FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs some years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single NES game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides. So many games, in fact, that all of the North American games have been covered, as have the European games, leaving only those that are homebrews and mostly those released in Japan and the Koreas.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Field Interactions

Anytime you are not in battle, we generally refer to it as "the field". (Of course, if you're playing a Japanese RPG, you ought to be familiar with the terminology from previous other RPGs in your language. =P) The main things you do here are walk around and interact with people. Via the A Button, you can bring up an action menu with the following commands:

  • Talk: If someone is in front of you, you can speak with them.
  • Fight: Similarly, you can also fight people in front of you. Not always a good idea, though, since that can cause disobedience in your dragon.
  • Status: View your status: that is, HP, Strength, Defense, health state, money, and equipment.
  • Equip: Change your equipment. There are several kinds: weapons, armors, shields, mantles, and the all-encompassing "other".
  • Items: Look at your item inventory and use the items therein.
  • Search: You can examine the ground beneath you to find hidden items! Like with DQ clones, though, it's very rarely used.
  • Trophy: When you beat an enemy (and neither eat/cook it), you can get a Trophy from it. These can be used to feed your dragon (and thus augment their stats) or to sell for profits. Ka-ching! You can also find Relics here, which are very special Trophies; these are more used to forge weaponry and armors than to eat.

Battling

Battling in this game is very simple. When you begin a battle, you will see several things: your party's HP, Strength, and Status at the top, the enemies' sprites in the middle (representative of their quantity), and a command menu at the bottom. There are five commands in all:

  • Attack (Top-Left): Physically attack the enemy. Interestingly enough, if multiple enemies are on the field and multiple are of the same species, then there is a random-but-equal chance for you to hit any of them, but you can pick an enemy of a specific species to aim for. For example, in the early game, you can find fights versus 2 Daphnia and 1 Poison Daphnia; there is a 50% chance to hit the one you want if you pick the former, but 100% to hit the Poison one if you pick that one. Hm.
  • Defend (Middle-Left): Defend this character from attacks, halving the damage taken. Useful in protecting low-HP characters, but pointless if you're the only one alive.
  • Escape (Bottom-Left): Flee the battle. It won't always work, though, and nothing is rewarded for this.
  • Bribe (Top-Right): You can try to pay enemies to leave battles. As with Escape, it's not always going to work.
  • Item (Bottom-Right): Of course, you can use items in battle for various purposes.

Dragons have their own commands. They will be chosen after the main character's.

  • Attack (Top): You can tear, beat, or bite the enemy. The latter two seems to be the most effective, and equally so. Around Levels 10 or 15, your dragon will gain a Breath attack (a fourth option in the menu), which will be the most effective of them all.
  • Defend (Middle): Same as with the main hero.
  • Mock (Bottom): Damages the target, but weaker than a normal attack.

Basics of Your Dragon

One of the more unique aspects of this game come with the dragon. After a time, you will end up finding your dragon egg in the game. After the egg hatches - which will take some time, of course - you need to bring it to a nursery. In the meantime, it can help you to be aware of your actions: during the time the dragon is in the egg, what you do will affect it, its attitude, and its skills. There are four types of dragons:

  • Black Dragons: These dragons hatch when you are a brutal fighter, one who fights even when the odds are clearly against you. As such, they tend to do the same: fight regardless of their own stats, and they tend to be belligerent despite their bravity.

  • Crimson Dragons: Characterized as gluttons, they simply tend to occur when you tend to feed them Trophies a lot, I suppose. They are very disobedient.

  • Green Dragons: Green dragons are very friendly and obedient, but also rather timid, since they observed your behavior of running from battles a lot. They also tend to end up being somewhat poor fighters.

  • White Dragons: THIS is the type of dragon you want: the dragon that is brave, yet wise enough to back down, and also loyal and obedient. They are characterized as both being intelligent and powerful, with high skill levels.

Keep in mind that the type of dragon you get is irrelevant, to some extent, to gameplay: with any dragon, the game is beatable, it just may be more difficult at some points than others.

After the egg hatches and you have your cute li'l dragon, you need to feed it. First leave it in the nursery at Hoverpool, and then go hunting for food by beating up monsters without end. Depending on what you feed it, different stats will be raised:

  • Intelligence: Kapila, Face Crab, Tao-tie, Mandrake, etc.
  • Strength: Anything generally looking tough, like the Eleturtle, Kalkala, Behemoth, and Panzer Beetle
  • Brave: Catfish Lord, Howler Shell, Slacker, etc.; generally stuff that would induce fear
  • Luck: Daphnia Lord, Cordyceps, etc.; essentially anything religion-related, I think
  • Speed (Boosters): Things that look fast, like the Samba Crow, Rain Breaker, Water Cat, and Panzer Beetle
  • Speed (Lowerers): Things that look slow, like the Mata Mata and Eleturtle

Speaking of dragon stats, here are their functions:

  • Level: As a note, this begins at a negative level, so when it hits Level 0, you can take it from the nursery and into battle.
  • HP: Uh... A measure of its health.
  • Strength: A measure of the damage it does.
  • Defense: A measure of how much less damage it takes from attacks.
  • Dexterity: Synonymous with the Speed and Agility of other RPGs, mostly used for turn order and evasion.
  • Intelligence: Unknown. Probably helps to determine whether you get a White Draqon.
  • Brave: The lower the bravity, the more it flees. Thus, the lower this is, the more likely a Green Dragon will be yours.
  • Sympathy: The lower the sympathy, the less your dragon obeys. Thus, the lower this is, the more likely you'll get a Black or Red Dragon.
  • Morality: Unknown. Probably helps to determine whether you get a White Dragon.
  • Luck: Determines luck-based things, like critical hits.
  • Weight: Just something to look at. Even so, it is augmented by feeding your dragon, so it could be proposed that as this goes "too high", the more likely you will be to get a Red Dragon.
  • Height: Just something to look at.

Saving/Loading

Saving: Saving, in this game, is not like most other RPGs of its day. Rather than being able to choose to save, you will simply save every time you sleep in an inn or by using a tent, each of which fully restores your HP in the meantime and allows you to see the notes on the growth of your dragon as well. It's done automatically at those times, too. That also means save points can be few and far between at times, so it's best to keep a few tents on hand!

Loading: It is simply done from the title screen, assuming a save file exists! =P

Dying/Game Over

In most RPGs, a character would be considered "KO'ed" if their HP hits zero; that is, they are essentially dead weight, being able to do nothing. In Sansara Naga, it's slightly different, and all the more emphasizes the point of being prepared for the worst. In the case of the main character, if he dies, it's ... sort of okay. You'll be sent back to Orissa in your grandmother's house, but that's the worst of it. If your dragon dies, though, your game is over (for a dragoon is nothing without his dragon) and you must reload from the last save point you had.

Walkthrough

Pre-Beginning Storyline

This is simply a translation of the storyline preceding this game's events, as according to the instruction manual. Spoilers, of course, are here.

In a distant time, so distant that no one knows when, there was a continent called Akupala.

One day, a lone boy slipped away from the village where he had grown up, not even waiting for daybreak. He had no money, nor armor, nor a weapon to protect himself with. He barely even had any food. All he had were big dreams and a large egg tucked under his arm. That was it.

However, the egg was the treasure of his village. "It's a dragon egg," the Elder had said. Yes, there were indeed dragons in this world. Their grandeur and menance led people to both fear and worship them. Furthermore, there were specialists in this world called "Dragoons" who could control dragons with only a flute. Because of the difficulty of their work, they were respected by all - even royalty.

"I'll hatch a dragon from this egg, raise it right, then someday I'll surprise everyone in the village!" The boy believed wholeheartedly that if he became a dragoon, wealth and prestige would be his.

And so, he felt that he, too, could become a dragoon. However, things don't always go as planned. For the creature that hatched from the egg looked nothing like a dragon... It was, in fact, a baby ostrich! The small ostrich looked askance at the startled lad and suddenly bolted off toward the horizon.

After pilfering the treasure of his village, the boy had lost it in the end... There was no way he could return to the village now. For if he said that the treasure people had long thought to be a dragon egg was really just an ostrich egg, who on earth would believe him?

... If he wanted to return to the village with his head held high, he would have to become a dragoon. Thinking it over, he let out a laugh: "Well, that was my plan all along, wasn't it?"

Thus, the boy - who you play as in this game - set out for a wilderness filled with Stray Dragons, monsters, and corrupted Fallen Dragoons.

Game Start-Up

When the game begins and the title logo appears, press Start and you'll then be prompted to choose a name for yourself. (I chose "KAIN", if it matters: it references Final Fantasy IV, where Kain is a dragoon. =P) You then choose the gender of the main character, and the message speed (Fast/Normal/Slow). The story presented earlier in the manual is then paraphrased:

One night, a precious treasure was stolen from the village... The Dragon Egg...

Running for dear life, you suddenly realized that it was only a mere ostrich egg...

Overworld: As the game begins, your initial goal will to simply be to follow the ostrich. Ignore that and go into town.

Orissa: I will advise you that, firstly, your grandmother resides in the southeastern house. Speaking with her is a free heal and a free Box Lunch (if you lack it - it heals HP, by the way) in this game. Everyone else in town dislikes you for whatever reason (guys, it's an ostrich egg!), but you can still plunder a treasure: in the northern house, on the east side, you can find a chest. Step on it and use "Search" to find a Snapper Scale relic: 33, in fact. These are used to forge weaponry and armors later on: with enough money in this instance, you can forge a a Snapper Shield, which boosts Defense by a whopping 90, which will surpass most anything for the majority of the game. Anyhow. Leave.

Overworld: Back to business. The ostrich is that bird to the south, and it'll move away as you get closer. In any case, follow it, but try to stay strictly on the land that is grassy - notice the bestiary above. Even if currently incomplete in some stats, it's clear that the Antelope, Mandrake, and Paibilica, for example, will screw you over more than the Daphnias found on the main path. Just sayin'.

At the end of the path, you'll find a house. Enter it and talk with the man within. Tell him you need a dragon egg and he'll decide to make a deal with you: it seems that an old dragon's nest is atop the western peninsula. Bring him some cr-- I some Dragon Dung from it and you'll get a Dragon Egg. ... Okay. Whatever. It's none of my business if he prefers the dung to the being that can produce it endlessly.

So, then... Begin by going north back to Orissa. When you enter, don't do anything or speak with anyone; they're still mad about you stealing their Dragon-that-looks-oddly-like-an-Ostrich Egg. However, your grandmother in the southeastern house is as loving as ever, and speak with her is a free full heal, so use that to your advantage. Then head west of town to the mountain range. Follow it to its southern end and, when there's a gap between it and the next, head west and south to the tip of the peninsula nearby. There will be a green tree at the end: that's the nest.

Dragon's Nest: This is one of those kinda-sorta maze puzzles: basically press buttons on the D-Pad to go through the tree hollows. Press Up, then Right four times to find a Rusted Sword. Press Left five times, then Up and Left to find the Rusted Armor. Press Up, then Right six times, then Down, then Left to find the Dragon Dung. Press Down three times and then Left or Right at the base of the tree.

Overworld: Be sure to equip that new equipment you just got (the Rusted Sword and Armor)! In any case, backtrack to that old man's house: remember, north and east to Orissa, then southwest to there, Dragon Dung in ... hand. Ew. Speak with the man within and pick any of the Dragon Eggs. I doubt it really matters, but, hey, pick lucky number 7 for all I care. After some of the gimmicky repeated questioning you tend to get more from modern RPGs, you'll get the title screen introduced in a way also atypical for NES RPGs, and then back to being in control.

Anyhow, the man noted that there is a shop to the northeast of Orissa you can go to; in fact, there's someone there you ought to meet, so go there.

Overworld: Head north from the old man's house to Orissa. Heal there with your grandmother, then follow the nearby river for a good while until, near a "T" junction, you'll find a shop. Enter.

Haratama #4: In the room at the north side of the main shop, you can speak with an old man, Ala Singh. There's not much point to speaking with him, but do so anyways since you were clearly intended to. Anyhow, also grab 300 Rupees from the chest to the east. The shop itself pretty much consists of that dude north of the counter, selling various foodstuffs. That's about it here; you could engage the Haratama Cow in battle by buying some takeout, but he's a bit, shall we say, beefy? In any case, back to the overworld wi' ya.

^sr2|

Overworld: Basically begin by heading northeastward along the river a while towards the capital of Hoverpool. (You don't know that yet, but I have a map! =P) As you go along, after a battle or two, your dragon will probably hatch out of their egg: be sure to give them a good name! (I named mine "FYRE". Mostly because they wouldn't let me use "Bahamut" or "Shinryu" or "Gawain" or "Charizard" (don't judge me). Dang four letter limit.) Keep following that narrow river and it will eventually empty into a lake. Use the tan road near the lake to get to the city in the center - I'm not joking, if you run onto the purple, deep water, you may as well just let the Water Cats kill you and eat you and your dragon. In any case, be sure to use the roads northwest or northeast of the one I pointed out, since the Royal Palace isn't open to you.

East Hoverpool (a.k.a. Lower Town): If you enter from the east side, you'll find an inn just to the northeast of the entrance. For 50 Rupees, you can stay the night and heal your HP. However, there are two "innkeeps". The northern one of the two is actually a thief; if you stay with him, your money will be all gone in the morning. The southern dude is safe, though.

In fact, a number of merchants are going to rip you off in some way, so it's best to not bother much around here. There is a person in the house to the northwest of the inn who will sell a Paper Tent (plus a free Box Lunch) for 750 Rupees, which is nice. The other guy to the north sells Cursed Beads for 28,000; these become other items when used in battle. I for example got the Seahorse Tongues, which fully heal HP. ^_^ Someone in the northeastern side of town, in a house, will also sell the Kotetsu for 1,980; it's nice, actually. Anyhow. West side of town. Please. Before I get a sketchy "medical exam".

West Hoverpool (a.k.a. Business District): Just south of where you enter, you can find an inn. There, you actually have three options: an overnight stay for 100 Rupees, a B&B (bed & breakfast) for 200, and full room and board for 300. There is no functional distinction amongst them, so simply opt for the cheapest stay; each also result in you being able to buy Box Lunches at 100 Rupees each. In the southwest corner of town, you can find the Dragonia shop, but it's kinda useless, but only for now; later, it will be very helpful in your dragon's growth.

Let's see... In the southeast part of town, you can find the weapon and armor shops. The weapon shop in particular may be useful if you somehow have about 7,000 Rupees. Why? If you got the Snapper Scales back in Orissa, you can forge the Snapper Shield here, which boosts Defense by 90! If you need money, go beat enemies in the overworld for their respective trophies and you can sell them at the Chemists. (Fighting the cows in town also work, but, beware, that harshly affects your dragon's growth, despite the 4,800 Rupees earned from a single Cow Liver.)

A house to the west of here contains the chemist of Hoverpool, who sells mostly medicinal items. Just south of there, you can get a monetary loan (100, 500, 1,000, or 5,000 Rupees), but it increments at 3% per day. That can be a bit significant. Look below, for example.

Loan Amt. +D Cost on Day When Loan is Paid Off
Day 1 Day 2 Day 3 Day 4 Day 5 Day 6 Day 7 Day 8 Day 9 Day 10 Day 20 Day 50 Day N
100 103 106 109 112 115 118 121 124 127 130 160 250 100 + 3*N
500 515 530 545 560 575 590 605 620 635 650 800 1250 500 + 15*N
1000 1030 1060 1090 1120 1150 1180 1210 1240 1270 1300 1600 2500 1000 + 30*N
5000 5150 5300 5450 5600 5750 5900 6050 6200 6350 6500 8000 12500 5000 + 150*N

Get a loan if you want to, but keep in mind that larger loans get harder to pay off over time due to the use of interest; thus, you can't pay them off as quickly, and then the loan continues to increment in cost. Whoever came up with that idea was clever. Could be worse, though: compound interest on a 5,000 Rupee loan over 50 days at 3% interest applied daily would be closer to 22,000 Rupees. To the curious, if you opt to fight this guy, you can plunder the chest beyond for 15,000 Rupees.

And if you fail to pay off the loan in due time, you battle an unbeatable enemy. Gulp.

^sr6|Aw, ain't she just the cutest~?

And finally, we come to the main reason to coming to Hoverpool: the house to the west of there is the dragon nursery. For 800 Rupees - which you REALLY should pay!! - you can leave your dragon here until its level finally is above Level 0 and thus is capable of fighting on its own. If you go into the room to the north after, you can speak with one of the women nearby; if you hand one of them a Daphnia trophy (which you probably have plenty of) and 300 Rupees, you can help fight off distemper in your dragon, which is always a good thing.

Other than that? Be sure to visit Dragonia and get some toys and stuff. You can go to the north side of the nursey and speak with the dragon, who's in her bed. If anything, feeding her stuff can't be all that harmful. In fact, using the items can boost her stats! (Mostly Sympathy and Morality.) Speaking with the matron to the south after feeding your dragon enough Daphnias (around 10) will lead to you learning what else you need to be a true dragoon: first is the Dragoon's Helm, which would be found in the palace, but not anymore...

(As a footnote, in a later playthruogh of the game, I ended up having to feed my dragon (Big) Tadpoles as well, though why I didn't in the first is beyond me. In any case, they can be found easily in the rivers. Then I had to feed her Bone Fish as well, which can be found in the rivers and the shallow ocean around Hoverpool. That was the end of it on my second playthrough.)

Go south along it until you reach a junction like that pictured nearby. It may be just my own idiocy telling me to note it in such detail, but you can go under the upper green paths. For example, at the this junction, go south. Then go east, south, east, and west, and use "Search" on the chest at the end fo the path to find a Seahorse Tongue within!

Go back along the path, this time going south and south at the forks, then into the archway at the end. Follow the fairly easy-to-navigate path for a while and you'll be presented with two archways in quick succession. Use the second you find (which is really just a path under the overhang above) to find some Escargot at the end. Interesting to find French food in a Japanese RPG. Hm. In any case, it's just an enemy Trophy.

Backtrack along the main path for a while the first archway we encountered along it, a bit before the two near each other. Use it to reach the upper level. Go waaay to the south to the southeast corner, then use the northbound path just a bit to the east of there. Go through the doorway you find, then follow the path beyond to another, leading to Lower Town. Rest up back here, then redescend into the well via the Business District entrance.

Down here again, backtrack to that upside-down "T" junction made by the black roads in the screenshot above here. There, this time, go west along the southernmost of the westbound paths and follow it linearly to a new town area. Actually, it's the Palace.

Hoverpool Palace: When you emerge from the sewers (ewww...), go east and through the doors to the palace proper. While out here, do not speak with anyone; for the most part, you'll be forced into unwinnable fights, and that's no good. It's because they'll overreact and think you to be a thief. Anyhow, if you can somehow avoid speaking to anyone (shouldn't be that hard =P), head to the far south and then the far west to find a room. Enter it and open the chests for the Kurikara Sword and Falun Shield. Be sure to equip them! (Yes, I know, it'll be tough to remove that Snapper Shield if you have it. =P I suppose it doesn't matter if you do, but the Falun Shield will still need to obtained at the minimum. Plus, it'll infinitely restore 100 HP when used in the field or in battle as an Item, so no more healing items for a while!!)

Sewers: Had you spoken to the people near the well in the Palace, you would have learned that there is a band of thieves in the sewers. Our goal is to find and ea-- I mean BEAT them. To find them, first, you need to essentially backtrack to the place north of that "T" junction, again as in the previous screenshot. There will be a doorway to the north of there, one you used in coming down from the well initially. There is a path to the east of said door: follow it for quite the linear while to end up in a room with only one path to go: the door into the central enclosure.

Within, you'll find four people. Speak with one and you will end up fighting them, though only one defeat will be sufficient to drive off the rest. XD Of all of them, oddly the green-haired one to the north (their leader) seems to be the easiest. >_> Anyhow, winning the simple battle (it's no worse than the others 'round here) nets you a Reflector, then the chests yield a Rusted Shield (really?), a Seahorse Tongue, and a Dream Mirror.

With that done, it's time to backtrack out of here.

The Dragoon Helm

NOTE!

Now would be a REALLY good time to consider using some Dragon Toys on your dragon; price-wise, Rubber Balls are the most efficient. Even though you were beating up bad guys, those Thieves down in the sewers still took quite the chunk from your dragon's Sympathy and Morality, dropping it down to one point in my case. That's bad. That makes a dragon disobedient. Be sure to play with your draconian pet as soon as you can!!!

Sewers: I ended the previous section with the whole backtracking thing moreso because it was on the way. It's best, just for your health, to exit the sewers and to reheal. But, otherwise, return to the palace.

Hoverpool Palace: Here, begin first by going to the far south. Once through the door, go to the far north and into the room at the very end of the path. Speak with the woman there - the head maid - and you will be given the Dragoon Helm! That'll do it for here. You can even leave by the main entrance to the south if you want!

Hoverpool Business District: Visit the dragon nursery and it will seem, according to the southern matron, that your dragon's scale will have hardened, making her finally combat ready. You can also be told the legend of Miina Village, where they make the best Dragoon Flutes in the world, used to control your dragon in combat. That's the reason (as far as the plot cares) that you can't take her out of the nursery yet. However, you should be able to feed her whatever you want, Trophy-wise, although they don't seem to alter your stats any. Oh well.

So, as for where Miina Village is?

Haratama Hut #3: Nothing really here unless you want to fight cows for beef bowls. Otherwise, just leave.

Overworld: Just simply follow the river southeast, really. As you continue further along the river, you'll find the path blocked by bushes, and when you continue into them, you'll find yourself in a new wetlands area. There, speak with the girl to the south, Amrita, who also is seeking to become a dragoon. There will be a brief scene; after, simply go south to the overworld and continue following the river. You'll soon come to a north/south fork in the river. Miina River is on the east shore of the southern tributary.

When you enter the village, immediately go into the building to the east. There, you will find Ala Singh, who will promise to give you a Dragoon Flute if you defeat the Ichthyosaur, wherever that is. Speaking with other people, though, will reveal that one of their nests is to the east of Miina.

There's not much else here, though. In the building south of Ala Singh's is the inn; like in Hoverpool, the only reasonable option is the first ("Stay overnight"; 100 Rupees) as there is no real distinction amongst them. In the east-central part of the village, you can find the chemist's shop. That's it, though, so leave town.

Overworld: To find the Nest, simply head south of Miina and along or in the river for a while and you'll quickly come upon a pond, such as that pictured nearby. Walk on it.

Ichthyosaur's Nest: When you arrive, you will be right next to an archway. Walk into it and you will end up in the water. (It works basically like the dry sewers: go into archways to alternate between upper (here, grass) and lower (here, lake) levels.) Head into the next archway to the west and into the internal cave. There, go to the far south and then east and northeast to the archway in the corner. Once beyond, go into the archway to the east and follow the path beyond; eventually, a battle against the Ichthyosaur will begin.

It's not that difficult of a battle, though; for the most part, you can expect close to 10~20 damage from the boss's attacks, and about half that if you have the Snapper Shield equipped (though where you got the money is beyond me). So mostly grind against it, using your Falun Shield for the healing as needed.

After the battle, go through the archway to the north and you'll return back outside. Immediately go back through the archway and you'll return to the entrance of the area: now simply go north past the archway to leave. Head back to Miina Village.

A Dragoon is Born

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Ala Singh Flute

Miina Village: After returning to Miina, rest up if you need to in the inn, then go speak with Ala Singh. Remember, he's the person in the house east of the west entrance? When you speak with him, he (a great dragoon) will ask you if you feel like being his disciple. Your decision will change nothing, so you may as well agree with him. As a result, he will make you a flute, saying it will be ready on the morrow, so sleep in an inn for now and return the next morning. The person left in Ala Singh's stead will give you an Ala Singh Flute.

Hoverpool's Business District: Backtrack to Hoverpool, now. Basically go back along the river that brought you there in the first place and, when it ends, follow the skinny river northward as you did before. Return to the dragon nursery and, if you speak with the matron, you'll find that your dragon's fangs have also grown in now, meaning she needs some calcium in her diet. We can get that via several means. Escargot is what the matron suggests; you got ten of those as trophies back during the trip in the dry well, if you remember, and they can also be fought on the white, icy area between Miina and Hoverpool.

DRAGON GROWTH PROBLEM?

I will keep you aware of this, so that, after you feed the Escargot to your dragon, it will be best to save the game. For whatever reason, I encountered a glitch at this point. After having fed my dragon and slept in the inn, I then went ahead and bought some Rubber Balls from Dragonia and played with her. I had a fair sum of money and ended up raising her Sympathy and Morality up to 57. After doing so, speaking with the matron as you are supposed to simply hung the game. Thus, I would like to keep you aware of over-growth should you play with your dragon some more. Additionally, this growth seems to be "undoable" - that is, beating up people mindlessly in towns did not affect those stats as they normally should. If you are caught in this glitch with no way out of it, you're screwed, basically. Fair warning!

After the day when you feed your dragon the Escargot and, assuming she gets above Level 0 - mine hit Level 3 ^_^, you can speak with the matron to learn that she would be comfortable with the dragon going around on her own. She then will note a spring in Looze Village that is used to harden dragons' scales. (Remember, a dragon's scales tend to be their only defense. You know, other than fire-breathing and the ability to smack you around with their wings.)

After this, a brief cutscene will occur. Simply put:

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

Heed Master Ala Singh's words, for they are the Law. Thus he spoke:

"Hearken unto me! Never part with thine dragon! Never steal from the righteous! Do not kill on a whim! Strike back when hit hard! Strike first before being struck! Eat only one bowl of rice per day! Don't be fooled by sweet words and dark ways! Work hard on little money! Revere! Priase! Overcome your hardships!"

Go, hero! Follow the path of justice!

So ... where is Looze Village and its famous spring?

LOCAL MONSTER BESTIARY
It'd be best to check Monster Bestiary, since there's a lot, and plenty of repeats.

Of the two ways to head to our next destination, this will probably be the shorter and the easier. From Hoverpool, go back southwest along the river that usually brings you here, to the Haratama Hut. There, go into the southwestern enclosure and you'll find a toilet. "Search" on it and, for 100 Rupees, you can warp to one of the four Haratama Shops. Go for the second one (which is the northeastern one). From there, head to the overworld and simply follow the river (found just to the south) eastward. You'll soon cross a few mountain tiles before recontinuing the trek, which will bring you to the riverside village Ikushu.

Ikushu Resort: When you enter, note that you'll find another Nico Loan facility to south, just like in Hoverpool: like before, you can borrow 100, 500, 1,000, or 5,000 Rupees at a 3% interest rate per day. Not a good idea unless you're desperate. If you go south of there, you'll find a large building; go into the second entrance to the east and into the tavern there. In the southeast corner, you'll meet up with Tara the dancer, who will inform you that the Looze Spring is on a peninsula north of Hoverpool. Speaking with her again lets you learn that it would also be a good idea to help her find her missing Coral Hairpin.

Northeast of there, you can find a souvenir shop, so stock up on Jellies if you want. =P The chemist's place is just to the south of there. East of there is the police station; you can go through its southeastern doors to find a free Jelly in a chest. ''Be sure to keep that Jelly or to buy a spare one: we will need one later on!" Northwest of there is the weaponry shop. As you can tell, it's a bit screwed up in its own way, but, then again, who's going to complain when you can get a +90 Defense shield for only 1,500 Rupees? =P

If you go into the large building to the north of there, the person at the desk north of the entrance will help to serve as an innkeep, so you can stay the night there if you want.

Overworld: Trust me, there was a reason to visiting Ikushu. In any case, backtrack your way to Hoverpool now, and, from there, head pretty much due north. You'll soon find some mountains, so go north through them, and west when the path allows such. You'll eventually come upon a village. Speak with the person in the southwestern portion of there to learn that the water in these springs has dried up, making Ala Singh's dragon the last to use them. A different dragoon (Amrita, perhaps?) came by earlier, saying she'd go to Ikushu. Backtrack there. On the way, be sure to stick in the mountains until you deal with a Maya enemy, who will likely drop a Coral Hairpin that we need.

Ikushu Resort: When you arrive, head into the hot spring/inn area dominating the northeast part of the town. There, go to the southeast corner and through the eastern of the doors and speak with Amrita - the "lady dragoon" - beyond. She'll inquire as to the condition of your dragon before noting that Tara has returned to the Hoverpool bar. Let's go back....

Hoverpool Business District: Head to the southeast corner of the town, then head west and into the first entranceway you see. Speak with the woman beyond, who happens to be Tara. With the Coral Hairpin in hand, you'll end up giving it to her ... and then her boyfriend barges in. Of course. Of freakin' course. Even so, you'll probably one-hit the boyfriend; he has only around 9 HP. Speak with Tara after the fight to get the Cooking Set. With this, if you don't have your dragon eat enemies post-battle, you can cook and eat them yourself to heal HP.

So, what's next...? Were you to go to a Haratama Hut and buy something, you'd find that Ala Singh has left a message: "Go to Shakunta!"

LOCAL MONSTER BESTIARY
It'd be best to check Monster Bestiary, since there's a lot, and plenty of repeats.

As with our initial trip to Ikushu, it will be much easier to head there via the Haratama Huts' connected ... facilities. If you want to walk there manually, it's essentially to the northwest of Hoverpool. If you prefer to use the Haratama Hut, go southwest of Hoverpool to the one there (it's the nearest) and use the toilet in the southwestern facility via "Search", then head to the first shop. From that Haratama Hut, head west and northwest along the grassy fields as it narrows to a narrow footpath, leading to a clearing amidst the forest, which leads to Shakunta Village, the village of the shepherds.

When you enter the village, go into the building to the west of the entrance to find the inn. (As usual, just stick to the 100-Rupee offer.) Far to the east of there is the chemist's place; nothing much new there, but if you couldn't afford the Steel Tent in Ikushu, the Fur Tent will last you a decent while at least, so I'd stock up.

Beyond that, there's not a ton here. You should speak with the people, though; talking around will let you know that one of the boys of the village went off to the Soma Tree to the northwest to grab a Soma Fruit, a fruit used to make dragons quite timid and thus helps to fend off the Stray Dragons plaguing the village. Head to the overworld so we can go there.

Overworld: The Soma Tree can be found off to the northwest of the village: cross the mountains just to the northwest and then follow the forested path as it narrows to the open plain surrounding the Soma Tree, the center of the plain pictured to the right. Walk onto that tile to begin.

Soma Tree: Walk north onto the lone, blue tree in the area and opt to "Search" there. A boy will climb down. This next bit can be confusing, but the boy's literally standing on the same tile as you, so walk away from the tree a few tiles, then return and speak with the boy. During the conversation, you'll be attacked by a Garuda, an enemy you probably fought at least once on the way here. They usually appeared then in groups of two or three, but a lone one's simple enough (200 HP, 55 DEF), eh? =P After the battle, it will turn out that the boy ran away, so return to Shakunta.

Shakunta Village: Here, head into the northeastern of the houses, the one whose residents claimed their son had run off. Speaking with the father within is essentially a free stay at an inn, so that's nice. Speaking with the mother yields that their daughter - who happened to be a dragoon, as revealed by others, so, y'know, Amrita - headed for Achernar, which lies on the western peninsula. However, it's quite the difficult trip there, especially if you encounter Shin. (Yeah, yeah, I screwed around before bothering too much with the walkthrough. Sue me. I know you did. You're here for a reason. lol)

So...

Western Akupala

I don't care when or how you do it, but at some point during this trip, before visiting Achernar, get a Beef Bowl. A Beef Bowl can be found by going to a Haratama Hut and ordering the 4,000-Rupee option there, "Take-out", which will actually cause a fight against a cow. It's not especially difficult to beat, and winning will surely grant you a Beef Bowl. We will need it before we visit Achernar. Specifically, we will need it during or, preferably, before the fourth section, "Achernar & Finding the Loca Aloca".

Hoverpool & "The Informant"

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Letter of Introduction

Shakunta Village: After you're done here (meaning you saved the boy at the Soma Tree), return to the overworld and backtrack to Hoverpool. If you do not have a Jelly item in your stock, though, be sure to return to Ikushu and buy one. Ikushu is easily reached from going to a Haratama Hut and warping via the toilet to Shop 2 (the northeast one) and following the river. Hoverpool is easily reached from warping to Shop 4 and going northeast along the river. Remember, the Lower Town is the east half. =P

^sr9|

Hoverpool - Lower Town: Our first goal is to find the Informant. The residence we're looking for is due north of the entrance and slightly to the west. It is blocked by a man out front, as pictured nearby. DO NOT SPEAK WITH HIM: you'll just engage in a terribly tough and pointless battle. Rather, face him and use the Jelly item. Speak with the man within and pay him 400 Rupees: he'll tell you that the "wandering city" of Achernar exists within the dream of a monster known as Shin. (Well. There's some irony for you.) Putting him to sleep will allow you to enter Achernar. You'll then be given the Letter of Introduction.

Where will you use this? Head to the western entrance of the town and there will be a man just to the southeast of there. Face him and use that Letter (or beat him in an impossible fight, whatever) and he'll let you in the building. Speak with the man within and he'll you that, on the western portion of Akupala, lies the Mirage Desert, and therein lies the Valley of Tears. Somewhere within is a tablet, inscribed on which will be directions as to how to enter Achernar. Be sure to stock up before leaving!

Overworld - Heading Out West

LOCAL MONSTER BESTIARY
It'd be best to check Monster Bestiary, since there's a lot, and plenty of repeats.

^sr10|It's the Mirage Desert, after all.

The overworld trip is simple enough. Head west from Hoverpool and cross the mountains and hilly terrain to find a river. From its source in the south, travel to the west and you will begin to cross over some hilly terrain into some very dark-brown terrain. This will indicate you are on the western peninsula, and subject to some of the hardest battles of the game. Be very careful to avoid fighting the monster known as Shin (which is a white dragon); he is extremely difficult at this point. You are apparently more likely to encounter Shin if you follow that "mirage town" as shown in the nearby screenshot: it'll basically move away from you as you near it.

Anyhow, southwest of that point where you begin crossing onto the peninsula you will find a very narrow westbound path. Follow it and, as it widens, a gray building will appear to the north. Enter.

When you enter the valley, go along the path before you for a while. Eventually, you will come to a "T"-shaped intersection. Even though it doesn't look possible because of the shadow of the cliffs to the west (depth perception here is terrible), you can hit "Search" on the tile on the end. (It's a chest, just VERY hard to tell.) The character sprite will look like it does to the right if you're in the right spot (notice how it's like he is standing on water). There, you will find some Rogaine. Backtrack to the "T" junction and go west and through the tunnel.

On the other side, continue along the linear path. You will eventually descend some stairs and pop out of a different tunnel; continue some more on the other side. Past the next tunnel, you will find yourself in a squarish loop. In the southeastern portion, you can see an aqua-green chest; Search on it to find a Fire Scale, then go through the east tunnel, then through it again. On the other side of this one, instead of going through the tunnel to the east, first go south and you will find another discolored tile (i.e. a chest); Search there to find 3 Rupees. Then go through the east tunnel.

On the other side, first go south to the squarish loop around some platform; there will be a chest containing a Seahorse Tongue on the southwestern corner of it, so be sure to grab that. Return to the path nearest the previous tunnel and go east and along it to find a Red Bull as you turn west. Go back to the tunnel that brought you here and it will strangely enough bring you to the center platform here.

Get next to the stone tablet to the south and use "Search". It reads the following:

"There is a relic called the 'Dream Mirror' somewhere in this world. It is a mirror which reflects dreams. The gate to the great city of illusion cannot be opened unless the Dream Mirror is used on Shin, the Desert Spirit."

Now use the hole to the east of the tablet to return to the overworld.

Achernar & Finding the Loca Aloca

BEFORE PROCEEDING IN THIS SECTION...

Earlier, at the start of the section, I noted that you should get a Beef Bowl at some point during the trip thus far for the sake of progressing forward without hardship. If you don't have one, do it now. If you do not know how to get one, go to a Haratama Hut and order Take-out (the 4,000-Rupee option). Defeat the easy-to-beat cow and you will get the Beef Bowl as a reward. As an item, it's pretty pointless to have, but we need it for this.

^sr12|This white dragon is Shin.

Overworld: When you've returned to the overworld of the west peninsula with a Beef Bowl (I cannot stress it enough), wander around until you encounter Shin. The sure-fire way to do so is to essentially head towards the mirage town to the west of town, pointed out in the Overworld - Heading Out West section. When you encounter Shin, have your main character use the Dream Mirror and simply have your dragon Defend. Shin will end up going to sleep. When he does, the mirage town will stop moving (except to its proper position after a battle, if you encounter one), so enter it.

Achernar: Go to the west, stand on the toilet (okay...), and use "Search". To the west will be four dry wells. Enter the fourth of them (the one next to yours), if you want, though there's nothing there unless you want to speak with people, some giving some good advice. The middle well is a bit more useful. Speak with the person west of the entrance there for a free stay at an inn. ^_^ Further to the east, you'll find a chemist at a counter, so shop up there. Then simply use the well you used to get here. The next well to the west just has more people to talk with, and the fifth just brings you to the first, which you should use to leave.

Overworld: To find the Loca Aloca, which several people spoke of in Achernar as your next-intended destination, head west and northwest in the overworld, following the narrow dark-brown path to a building. Enter.

Loca Aloca - 1F: When you arrive, go west and north and along the path. You will soon find two green monsters blocking your path. Go to either one (I used to the east one, if it matters) and present a Beef Bowl before it. For whatever reason, it will change its tone and opt to let you by. It will then ask if you have used the Looze Spring; say "No" (since it's dried up - not to mention "Yes" initiates a fight), and he will tell you that Namuci's Blood has the same effect as the spring. So ... where's Namuci?

Hoverpool's Lower Town: Yup, you have to return to Hoverpool to find out! Again, you'll need some Jelly, which, as before, can be bought back in Ikushu. When in Hoverpool's Lower Town, then, go north of the southern entrance to the man from before, face him, and use the Jelly. Speak with the man within and pay 500 Rupees to learn that the twins at the bar in town will be able to help you better.

Hoverpool's Business District: Head to the southeastern corner of the town and west and into the first doorway to the north you see. Enter the bar and go to the far northern portion of it. Speak with the girls behind the two counters to learn that, to find Namuci's nest, you need to head to the far east to some ruins. And that's all you'll get from them.

Overworld: From the Hoverpool lake, head due east - it'll work best if you try to align yourself with the town itself. You will eventually find yourself on a grassy plain, so follow it eastward. As you continue eastward, you'll work your way to the end of a mountainous peninsula, with a building at the end. Enter.

Beyond, you'll find yourself on an island a bit to the southeast. There, go south and into another such building to warp further to another island. Go southwest and west there to another building. This one actually has something inside.

Namuci's Nest: Within, you will see two bluish objects on either side of the room. Use "Search" on each chest (which they are) to find a Skull Decoration and a Dragon Harness. They're both pointless items, but, hey, we're here. Go through the door to the north and further along the path to find four more chests, these containing a Nicked Blade, a Fire Scale, a Ganesha Armor, and some Perfume. From there, be sure to go outside and use a tent before returning north and battling Namuci.

Namuci is probably the first enemy worthy of being called a boss fight in this game, wielding almost 1,300 HP and 20 Defense. Granted, the 20 Defense isn't much, but that HP is the main thing. Even so, with that Ganesha Armor on, not much really will happen to you per his hits: usually between 40 and 60 damage. At the same time, most of your attacks from the main character should be doing around 50~60 damage, whereas your dragon is probably variable, though mine was hitting for about double that. (Yes, I fight a lot in the overworld. I rarely run from fights, and my dragon gets most of the spoils.) If you're running under something like I am, then it's probably best to let the dragon do most of the fighting while you play a support role. Should your dragon flee or you be the stronger one, you need to alternate between using the Falun Shield (HP healing: 100) and attacking with every turn or two. It's mostly a long grind, but, still, perhaps the first legitimate boss of the game.

"Fallen Dragoons Have Stolen Your Dragon!"

Achernar: After the battle, go through the door to the northeast. You'll end up back at Achernar's entrance, oddly enough. Ala Singh is also nearby, to the southwest, so speak with him. After, leave the area.

Note that you can now ride your Ostrich - the one from the beginning of the game - in the overworld! Press B to get on it. Like the Chocobos of Final Fantasy, the main benefits are quick travel and no random overworld encounters!

Overworld: Go back west to the mirage village again, as if you left mistakenly. When you return, speaking with the now-lone dude near the entrance will reveal that your dragon has been dragonnapped! OH NOES! Begin first by heading to Shakunta, the village on the northwestern peninsula. Remember the Soma Tree to the northwest of there? Go there and "Search" on the tree to find the Soma Fruit! Ala Singh will then quickly take it away, claiming that you have to take back your dragon without this. So whether this had any significance is beyond me, but you never know.... In any case, our next destination is Hoverpool's Lower Town.

Hoverpool's Lower Town: Here, go to the house of the Informant once again, give the guard some Jelly once again, and speak with the Informant again. Pay him 800 Rupees and he'll note that there are some ruins to the east of (the dried) Looze Spring as a possible location for the Fallen Dragoons' Hideout. (He'll also note that he thinks you'd need Soma Fruit to get there alive, but Ala Singh and his pride.... >_<)

Overworld: Head north from the lake surrounding Hoverpool on your Choc-- I mean Ostrich, to the peninsula we visited way back when looking for the Looze Spring. This time, however, instead of turning west on this "T"-shaped peninsula, go east and through the mountain valley to find a building at the end ... the hideout.

Fallen Dragoons' Hideout: Enter the building to the north and you'll find four people within. There, speak with the green-clothed one, their leader. This person will mention that your dragon is wreaking havoc down in Ikushu. You will be ejected from the premises, surprisingly without a fight.

Overworld: Get back on that Ostrich! Head next to Ikushu, which, as you'll remember, is the peninsula to the northeast of Hoverpool.

Ikushu Resort: Begin by speaking with the people in the bar in the southeastern portion of the town; the barkeep will mention something about the dragon, and recommend you visit the police squad. They are the southeastern building of the town. Speak with the two police officers outside the west entrance to find that there's been a dragon eating a Fallen Dragoon somewhere (yay!) transported to the palace (crap!), perhaps to be prepared for a feast (oh no!).

Overworld: Well, this is a fine mess.... Head back to Hoverpool now, and to the palace there (the south-central entrance).

Hoverpool Palace: You won't be allowed in, but speaking with the guards yields the fact that they're planning to serve dragon at the feast... Head to Hoverpool's Business District now and enter the sewer! (Remember, the dry, green well in the northwest portion of the town? Just Search on it to enter.)

Hoverpool Sewers: Take the well to the southeast, then go through the archway to the south to hit ground (black) level. From there, go south and along the path to the southern border of the area. Go west and along the lengthy linear path to the palace.

Hoverpool Palace: When you enter the area, you can speak with the maid to the south to learn that it's too late... Your dragon ran amok and she simply left! Yup, you've trained her right! XD In any case, go speak with the head maid in the main palace (remember, the girl who gave the Dragoon Helm?) and you'll be ejected from the premises.

Overworld: As you head along the path to the south, the boyfriend of Tara's you beat up earlier will meet with you, simply saying that Tara may know something about your dragon, and that she is in Miina Village. Miina Village, as you'll remember, is to the southeast, on the southeastern peninsula. So grab your Ostrich and go! You won't be able to take the Ostrich all of the way there, though - the bushes from earlier that caused your initial meeting with Amrita back then will impede you, so you'll have to go on foot from there.

Miina Village: When you arrive, head into the southeastern building and you'll find Tara within. She'll express her sorrow at the loss of your dragon before noting that the Ichthyosaur's nest from before has become a Stray Dragon nest, so you may find your own there. Stock up before you go!

Overworld: The Ichthyosaur nest, as you'll remember, can be found by following the river to the south of the village.

Stray Dragon Nest: Expect to find a lot of Stray Dragons here to battle, but nothing is new there. Finding your dragon is the same as finding the Ichthyosaur from before. (Yes, Victor Music was truly that creative.) Go through the northern archway, then go into the next archway to the west to enter the underground structure. Use the northeastern, then eastern archways to reach the final room. There, go along the path and you will engage in battle.

In the battle, though, you will find four dragons. Three of them are Stray Dragons, and one is your own. Clearly enough, you are fighting against four dragons. (Interestingly enough, you cannot hit your dragon and she cannot hit you. And the other dragons actually vomit at you, even post-humously.) Simply use the Ala Singh Flute and you will have a scene with your dragon as the other three run off... So ... we finally have our dragon back! Yay!

(Also, when the hell did my FYRE turn White? I like her better than the Green, but... eh, whatever. =D)

Back to Business: The Loca Aloca

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Kakkara Staff [_] Cintaumani Jewel [_] Lariat [_] Mossy Shield [_] Dragon Dung [_] Agni Sword

Overworld: Now that we have our dragon back, it's time to get back to business with what we were doing before. Finally, too, that quest took a while. It's time to return to the whole thing we were doing regarding the Loca Aloca on the western peninsula. Backtrack there now - and, yes, the Ostrich is gone. What a shame. Still, gotta feed your dragon, eh? =P In any case, follow the river near Miina back to a Haratama Hut. While here, be sure to get a Beef Bowl via the usual means: order Take-out and defeat the cow you fight. Once done, warp to the fourth shop via the toilet and go north to the mountains, then northwest of there in the overworld to quickly find the peninsula. The Loca Aloca is, again, at the very western tip.

Loca Aloca - 1F: Go north again to one of the Rakshasas and use a Beef Bowl in front of them. Now that you have a dragon, and that dragon's scales have been hardened by the Namuci's blood, we can pass. Go up the ladder to the north.

Loca Aloca - 2F: This is essentially a maze. First go south and along the path for a while to find a Kakkara Staff. Return to the entrance and go north, east, and north to a chest containing the Cintaumani Jewel. Go to the south, east, south, west, south, east, and south to find a dead-end with a Lariat. Go north, west, north, north, east, north, north, east, south, east, and waaay to the north at the next fork to find another chest containing a Mossy Shield. Go south, east, south, and east to happen upon another chest, this one containing Dragon Dung. (You can sell it, okay?) Go south, west, south, south, east, and north to find an Agni Sword. Go north, far to the east, south, east, and along out of this hellish maze.

When you do so, you'll be in the overworld on the Holy Island. Enter the village nearby.

The Mauhautma Monastery

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Silver Vajra

Upon entering the village, you won't actually find a lot there to deal with other than people. That said, they can give a fair few details... Mostly, it concerns the tower of Rta Sathya. This tower, located behind the Hoverpool Palace and sealed unbreakably (supposedly), is said to be the divider between the worlds of man and dragons. To break the seal, you will need both of the Vajras, which lie in the Temple of Maugaunga and the Temple of Mauhautma.

^sr13|

There IS something to do, though! In the enclosure just north of the eastern entrance (indeed, the only entrance) to the village, go to the spot shown in the picture. (It is the southern of the two easternmost tiles.) There, Search and you will find a hidden path before you. Follow it to the very end to find an enclosure. There, Search on the southeasternmost tile to find the Silver Vajra! That's one! But, beyond that, there's little to do here, so leave and head southeast to the other locale here.

The Mauhaunga Monastery

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Golden Vajra

In this area, there isn't a ton to do, either. Speaking with people leads to more questions as to why the worlds of dragons and man had to be divided, apparently to preserve universal harmony. Other than this, in the same spot as in the previous area, use Search to find a hidden path and examine the same spot at the end to find that ... the remaining Vajra has been stolen! Well. That kinda bites. =/

Head to the northwestern part of the main village and speak with the man there. He will tell you this, a legend stated back by the man at the Looze Spring, had you spoke with him twice:

"'A Dragon who meets the Holy Dragon will become the Holy Dragon itself.' Do you think this legend is true?"

Respond "Yes" to this question, and to the next inquiring as to your bravery regarding a journey into the world of dragons. In turn, you will be given the Golden Vajra!

Mauhaunga Monastery: As you leave the room where you obtained the Golden Vajra, with the Silver Vajra also in hand, you will suddenly be warped to the base of the Rta Sathya tower!

^sr14|

Rta Sathya - Ground Floor: When you arrive in the tower, go to the west and face the door, as in the picture nearby. Use the Silver Vajra, then the Golden Vajra from the Items screen. You will then be able to simply walk through the door. Should you need to prepare for the journey ahead (mostly just grabbing some equipment: the Maser Gun from Hoverpool's Lower Town, the Fire Shield, the Bald Helm, a Ptero Mantle, and any "Other" item you prefer being the ideal ones), be sure to use the door to the south to return to the king's chambers in Hoverpool. If you're ready, speak weith the green thing at the north side of the room, opt to go beyond him, and you'll be allowed up.

Rta Sathya - Main Area: This area will be VERY confusing to get through. I'm not entirely sure whether my own way is the shortest or the most complete: I simply know that I spent a good while in here and did not find any chests. For the purposes of this section, the doors are simply named by their cardinal directions: west, northwest/northeast (just north is there's only one door on the north side), and east. Got that?

Go through the doors to the east, north, northwest, northwest, northeast, east, west, and east. You will arrive in some sort of fifth Haratama Hut. Here, you can stay at the "inn" freely and speak with Amrita nearby. Leave to another area. ... Whoa.

The moment you step away from the Haratama Hut, Ala Singh will speak with you:

"Heed my words carefully. It has been a long while since the last Holy Dragon perished. The world's worst and most powerful dragon now dwells within its nest: the Chaos Dragon... It intends to rule the world of man. It must be destroyed or the whole universe will fall into ruin! I've been on a long quest to find a dragoon who can defeat the Chaos Dragon. And, well... You are our only hope! Please, you must defeat the Chaos Dragon!"

^sr15|

Tell him that you will do so. It doesn't take a genius to figure out that our destination is currently that blue-green cavern to the southeast, but the problem is that there's no direct pathway to it: we'll be doing a long trek, so get ready for it! Go northeast to the edge of the world, then west. When you arrive in the large plain, head off to the southeast, along the path to the east of the plain. Go south along there for a while until you reach a place where you can go off in four different directions, like that pictured nearby.

Go off to the northeast and you'll soon find the northern edge of the world as you hit the next plain. Go east from there to another, larger plain and you'll head east-southeast from there. (Which of the two paths there you pick is irrelevant: they'll meet up.) When they meet up, go south and onto the southwestbound path. Keep heading southwest until the path splits into two southwestbound paths; use the eastern of the two and stick to the world's edge for a while. Just keep following that edge and you will soon find our destination.

When you arrive, begin a philosophy of going into the very next tunnel to the east for a while and you will end up in an area like that pictured to the right. (Essentially an area where that philosophy must be violated in some way.) Enter the northeastern tunnel, then use the western tunnel within and you'll pop outside. Use the eastern tunnel there, then the west tunnel in the next trio to work your way to a ying-yang-like symbol. (And, to think, it took me two hours to figure that simple solution out. GAAAAAAAH!)

Walk into the center of the symbol and the screen will suddenly begin to flash as you are teleported into another area. There, simply walk along the path to the north. You will soon find a large beast at the end! You lock eyes with the Chaos Dragon! The floor starts shaking violently and everything begins to go dark...

I'll just keep you aware of this one thing: you will fight a lot of fights here, and they are outlined above. They will some of the toughest fights you have in the game, and with little healing allowed they are all the more difficult. Be sure to use the Falun Shield as an item between battles to heal all of the time: you won't be using tents at all. Sorry! Strategically, though, you can just spam Breath from your dragon while your main character plays support. At least, that's what I did.

Dream Orissa: When you awake, it will be in your hometown of Orissa, in your grandmother's house. Speaking with her yields that an old man brought you here two weeks ago, out cold. Speak with her again and she says simply that you are going to live your whole life with her, that you should give up on being a Dragoon. Speak with her one more time and, suddenly, a battle begins! It's a pretty simple, albeit lengthy fight, but do expect to take 30~40 damage per hit if your armor isn't ideal.

Dream Wetlands: Then there's a scene with you and Amrita...

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

Hero - "I was so tired... I fell asleep..."

Amrita - "I'm tired too... Maybe I should stop being a Dragoon... Have you ever thought about that?"

Hero - (Your response, Yes or No, is irrelevant.)

Amrita - "Dragons and dragoons... We can't live amongst people... But... Have you had nightmares about dying alone... Out in the middle of nowhere...?"

Hero - (Response is irrelevant.)

Amrita - "We may be human... But still, how do other people see us? Sometimes with curiosity, sometimes with admiration, sometimes with raw hatred! Do you think you should show those people your dragon's might?"

Hero - (Response is irrelevant.)

Amrita - "Why don't you and I give on being dragoons? We chose to follow the way of the dragoon for ourselves. Is it wrong to choose to live an honest life here?"

Hero - (Response affects conversation - Yes or No?)

Amrita (if "Yes") - "If that's what you want... Then you'll get it!"

Amrita (if "No") - "I see... It's settled then. Now that I've seen your true colors, you'll die!"

The battle against Amrita is no more difficult than the one against your grandmother: her stats are completely the same.

Dream Hut: You'll then end up in a Haratama Hut. Speak with the only man here and you'll be given some noodles, and, after eating them, find them to be poisoned as you enter a battle. It is, again, the same as the ones before... It's a good thing that that Falun Shield has infinite uses for its healing effect, eh?

Suddenly, a message appears on-screen:

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

If you wish to defeat the Chaos Dragon, you'll need the power of the Legendary Breath. It can be used only once by a dragon that has been raised with the utmost care. You cannot defeat the Chaos Dragon without it. That said, you'd better rest here for a little while... Kahahaha!

^sr17|

Dream Ikushu (Springs): After that message, it seems like you're in the Ikushu hot springs. Like I'm really going to believe that. Especially because there's all these woman claiming to love me. No. It's not possible. Not a bit. Not at all. ... Anyways, back to business. When you arrive, head south and into the spring. There, Search on the very center tile of it, like in the nearby screenshot.

For whatever reason, the melon-mashing minigame you've could've played begins: if you played, you'll recall it much like the one you could've played in the real Ikushu Resort. In any case, in this game, you'll notice how the announcer (who you cannot see) will say stuff like "Left" or "Right". When he says them, tap the direction on the D-Pad that corresponds and he'll shout at you for doing so. Mash A to bash him. Repeat as necessary ... and, yes, this is definitely different from how the game normally would intend it. It's a dream. Get over it. =P

Dream Ikushu (Tavern): Now you'll find yourself in the Ikushu tavern, with only Tara in there. Go speak with her and she'll ask you to take her away with you. Regardless of your response, her boyfriend suddenly rushes in, raring for a good ol'-fashioned bar fight. When you beat him, Tara will fight you off, too.

Dream Hoverpool Palace: When you arrive, if you head south and speak with the king, he will suddenly dub you ruler of the world for having slain the Chaos Dragon. ... What? In any case, he disappears, as do the remaining servants if you speak with them thereafter. Head outside of the throne room to the northeastern corner of the area: you remember, where you went to and from the sewers way back? Attempt to enter the sewers (Search on the dried, mossy well) and you'll end up in a fight with the leader of the thieves.

Dream Overworld: Oh, crap, what now...? ... In any case, you have to head to Ikushu now, or where it would be in the real world. In this case, there are no random encounters in the overworld; you can't enter some areas, though, and you won't find any people. Except in Ikushu. There, in the hot springs, speak with any one of the people there and you will begin a battle against ... yourself!?

Not like it's any different from the other fights you've had in the dream so far. Following that, though, you will fight the Chaos Dragon, whose HP is a whopping 3,420 or so. Still, it also has lower Defense than the other enemies thus far; ideal equipment or a well-grown dragon will be able to surpass 100 damage per hit pretty easily, although you should really stick to your guns on that whole strategy I mentioned earlier (you heal, your dragon attacks). At some random point late in the battle, your dragon - regardless of the comamnd you used - will suddenly use a massive breath attack and inevitably kill the Chaos Dragon!

Ending & Translation

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

The Chaos Dragon is gone.

However... Your dragon was lost as well... For the Legendary Breath can be used only once by a dragon that has been raised with the utmost care... Your dragon sacrificed her very life to use the Breath against the Chaos Dragon ... and to protect you.

But something glimmered underneath her corpse... Upon closer inspection, it turned out to be an egg.

You acquired the Rainbow Egg!

With the egg in hand, you need to head to the Hoverpool Palace from where you are (the Loca Aloca). Don't worry, no random encounters will be fought on the way! In the throne room there, go speak with the king.

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

[Written with the assumption of your name being KAIN, and your dragon's being FYRE, like me. >_>]

---

King - "Dragoon KAIN! I hereby award you this Great Medal for your brave deeds with your dragon. Excellent work! Say... Did your dragon leave anything behind?"

[The Rainbow Egg then hatches!]

Dragon Baby - "Nice to meet you, KAIN. My name is FYRE."

After heaps of monsters and many meetings and partings, KAIN finally removed the seal inside the Rta Sathya tower... KAIN destroyed the eight nightmares sent by the Chaos Dragon -- lord of magic and monsters -- gloriously defeating the Chaos Dragon in the end.

But the price was high... [It takes a long moment for this next bit to roll: just sit put!]

KAIN lost the dearest friend who sacrificed her very life to use the power of the Legendary Breath, but FYRE gave birth to a hatchling who was destined to become a new Holy Dragon, as Ala Singh once foretold... Thus, a new journey begins...

And so, the credits roll, ending simply with the words "See you next time!", for, yes, there is a sequel to Sansara Naga on the Super Famicom/SNES (and GBA via compilation).

Congratulations! You have beaten the first game of the Sansara Naga series!

For now, these are all the stats I am able to detail - I have yet to narrow down the RAM addresses for stats other than HP and Defense. Sorry - it's tougher than it seems (and that the devs have poorly-organized RAM >:O). Also note that that item drops take account for relic droppings, but not for trophies: trophies are far less important and usually always applicable to most enemies (so long as you don't eat them), but relics can be used to forge equipment, so it's nice to note that stuff.

Codes 'n' Such

As of now, there is just one known cheat for this game: this one will activate a sound test. During gameplay, press the A Button to enter the action menu. Next, on Player 2's controller, hold B while you press A on Player 1's - this will open a small window at the right side of the screen. Use the D-Pad on Player 1's controller to cycle through the music tracks, and A on the same to play them.
