Introduction

Hello, and welcome to yet another FAQ of mine, my fourth finished tonight, actually, and the second by Sachen. >_> This FAQ covers Explosive Brick. Explosive Brick is another one of those generic games that Sachen - a prolific NES/GB unlicensed-game developer and plagiarist - had produced. This one in particular is a rip-off of games like Breakout and Arkanoid that made their fame on the NES: essentially a game wherein you destroy blocks using a paddle to bounce a ball back and forth.

Even if it is a crappy rip-off, I can't entirely say I didn't like it. I just wish they'd produce some legitimate products, and some that actually weren't glitchy or anything (like Ant Soldiers was).

It's been twenty years since this game's launch in 1994 by Sachen. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Gameplay Overview

To be honest, there isn't much to playing Explosive Brick. At the bottom of the screen, you will have a paddle, and at the top of the screen are some bricks. Your goal will be to use the paddle to bounce the back and forth between the bricks and the paddle, thus destroying all of the bricks. Simple enough, right?

And, really, that's it. The only variation between the levels you'll play in are their layouts and the block types therein, neither of which I am able to guide you through (since there is some randomization in itself). There are 34 levels in the game in all, with increasing difficulty as you go on. Each stage has a password ("CODE", the game calls it) viewable by pausing the game; however, the final two stages lack such passwords, so be careful about that.

The block types are as follows:

  • Cracked Brick: Takes one hit to eliminate and yields 100 points. Rarely yields power-ups.
  • White Brick: Takes two hits to eliminate and yields 100 points. Sometimes yields power-ups.
  • Gray Brick: Takes three hits to eliminate and yields 100 points. Sometimes yields power-ups.
  • Dark-Gray Brick: Cannot be destroyed without exploding the level.
  • Spinning Gray Brick: "Explodes" the level, instantly finishing it with a win.

Here are the types of power-ups, based on their descriptions. Only note that one power-up can be active at a time, barring those that give points/lives alone, of course.

  • "1-Up" Block: Extra life!
  • "3" Block: Skip three stages
  • "500" Block: Yields 500 points
  • "1000" Block: Yields 1,000 points
  • Boot Block: Increases the movement speed of the paddle, which is painfully slow
  • Double-Arrow Block: Widens the paddle briefly (overall increase in size of about 80% ~ 100%)
  • P Block: Destroyable blocks are always destroyed with one single hit

Some General Tips

  • "Don't go for every power-up!" It's rather simply put, but important: those power-ups may be tempted, but it's by no means worth it if you lose a life!

^sr1|

  • "Tunneling:" This refers to whenever you have some kind of empty column or area above the majority of the blocks, with only a small path getting there. An example is in the picture to the right. See, when you move your ball into that space, it doesn't have much room to get out, right? It's mostly going to be bouncing on a lot of the blocks, too, meaning you can take out tons of them quite easily, with little worry as to the survival of your own ball! That, in turn, makes it easier to grab whatever power-ups are dropped - there's no real bad thing about it!

^l2|

  • "The Law of Reflection:" Simply put, the law of reflection states that the angle at which the ball (gray circle) touches an object (such as a paddle - black rectangle)) - the angle being referred to being the angle of incidence, which is the dotted line and perpendicular to the touched side of the object - is equal to the angle of reflection. In other words, the angle at which the ball touches the paddle, in reference to a straight-up line, will be equal on the other side. This means that, with proper manipulation, you can, in fact, predict the motion of the ball and set up desired situations.
