Introduction

Welcome to another FAQ of mine. This FAQ covers the game Mogura de Pon!, and it's more of an experiment to me than anything. I'll grant you, it's a simple game, although I've never seen this in the form of a video game (beyond minigames in PokePark 2 on the Wii) - this is essentially a version of Whack-a-Mole. Really, that's it, albeit a surprising hard version. The "experiment" part comes in with this being my first FAQ written in the Shift-JIS format that allows hiragana/katagana (such as the game's Japanese title, もぐらでポン!) to be displayed properly. Perhaps it's not proper to be using anything as an "experiment" in the matter of FAQs, but I've got to start somewhere. Anyhow. Sorry for the sidetracking.

It's been over twenty years since this game's launch in 1994 by Athena. Since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Game Start-Up

At the title screen, there will be three options:

  • ノーマル (no-maru): Essentially an exhibition match. After choosing this option, you will choose your opponent of the four you can play against.
  • ワエスト (waesuto): This is essentially a sequential series of matches against all four opponents, and looping when you're done with each.
  • VS: This apparently requires two GameBoys linked by a link cable. As such, I do have the details of this mode.

When you start either of the first two modes, you can then pick a difficulty. The main difference the difficulty causes is the rate of appearance and disappearance of the targets will increase, and if you screw up and hit nothing you will stay stunned for longer on higher difficulties.

  • おさる (osaru): Essentially the easy difficulty.
  • ふつう (fusuu): Essentially the normal/moderate difficulty.
  • いじぬ (ijinu): Essentially the hardest difficulty.

Gameplay

This game is quite simple. When you start up a game, you will see a 3x3 grid of holes on the field. By default, you (the hammer) will hover over the center of that field. You can use the D-Pad's buttons to go to different spots: Up is the top-center spot, Right is the right-center, and so on. To hit the corner slots, you'll have to use combinations of the D-Pad buttons; top-right means Up and Right, bottom-left means Down and Left, and so on.

When you hover over any spot, you can then press the A Button to hammer whatever's there. If it's a person, you'll get a point, and there's nothing else (except in Kuma's stage) to hit. In the exhibition mode, your goal is to simply hit as many as possible, while you have to hit a specific number in a specific time in the story mode.

Nothing much else to it, really: it's quite simple, at least in description.

Opponent Details

There are four people you will "battle" against in all. In the exhibition mode, you can fight against them at choice, while the story-like mode will make you go against them all in order. Thus, here, I will detail some generic details about the "whack-a-mole" style of gameplay you'll have when you play them. (Of course, keep in mind that the "Point Goal" only applies to the story mode, and the "Second Goal" for when you end up looping to the start of the line after beating Noku.)

  • もぐら (Mogura):
    • Point Goal: 35 on Easy, 45 on Medium, 60 on Hard
    • Second Goal: 40 on Easy, 50 on Medium, 70 on Hard
    • Time Given: 45 seconds
    • Description: Mogura has the most basic of the fields, and is the one upon which the others are based upon. There's nothing special with this field, gimmick-wise.

  • ぺンギン (Penguin):
    • Point Goal: 60 on Easy, 60 on Medium, 50 on Hard
    • Second Goal: 65 on Easy, 65 on Medium, 60 on Hard
    • Time Given: 45 seconds
    • Description: While this fellow's field doesn't have any gimmicks, either, like Mogura's, he does have one aspect that makes him particularly annoying, especially on harder difficulties: that he likes to pop in and out very quickly, and yet won't do it for every hole. Mostly, it's one of those situations where you have to quickly smack him or don't do it at all (remember, being wrong causes a delay).

  • くま (Kuma):
    • Point Goal: 20 on Easy, 35 on Medium, 50 on Hard
    • Second Goal: 25 on Easy, 40 on Medium, 60 on Hard
    • Time Given: 45 seconds
    • Description: The main thing here is that, at times, rocks will pop out of the holes. These rocks will stay in the holes until you get rid of them by beating them four times with the hammer; if you keep them in, they'll block Kuma from getting out, and thus lowering your point intake by 11% per plugged hole. In easier difficulties, immediately smacking the rock away is probably best. However, on Hard, I prefer to smack it every few seconds, so I can multitask by hitting Kuma still. After all, 11% isn't a whole lot; I surely don't want that blockage, though, when they begin to proliferate.

  • ヌコ (Nuko):
    • Point Goal: 35 on Easy, 50 on Medium, 60 on Hard
    • Second Goal: 40 on Easy, 55 on Medium, 70 on Hard
    • Time Given: 45 seconds
    • Description: Again, not much to say since there aren't a lot of gimmicks here. However, keep in mind that you, on average, need to hit 1.333 (technically 4/3) of them per second on Hard, so being flawless on that difficulty is practically required. Additionally, when the octopi spit out ink, absolutely do not hit them: it seems to make it where you lose 2 points in exhibition mode, and 2 hit additional ones in story mode.

  • Final Round:
    • Time Given: 45 seconds
    • Description: This round is only given after beating everyone in Story Mode twice. In this, you simply must hit one of the Moguras that pop out of the holes to win. And then you'll get the "The End" screen. Nothing difficult.
