Introduction

Hello, and welcome to yet another of my GameBoy FAQs. In this one, we will be covering the game Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon, a rather simple platformer game based on the anime/manga series of the same name. ... I don't have much more to say about it, given that I don't have any prior experience with it. Sadly so, I must admit; I live in, like, the one place in the U.S. that doesn't get cable, so I'm screwed out of anime beyond my Pokémon movies and Death Note. T_T

It's been over twenty years since this game's launch in 1992. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Game Controls

Button Resultant Effects
D-Pad Move around. Use Up to enter doorways and the like. Use Down to shatter walls in platformer stages.
A Button Jump.
B Button Speak with people in the field, or kick in platforming stages.
Start Button Pause/unpause gameplay.
Select Button N/A

The Stage Types

I will be summing up the general gameplay by a description of their stages. For the most part, that actually suffices decently enough.

Story Stages: These are the stages where there are few or no battles, which are used mostly for the developing the storyline. This is when Usagi maintains her normal, everyday schoolgirl form, basically.

Platformer Stages: These are the stages where most of the action will take place. In these stages, Usagi transforms into Sailor Moon to gain full access to her powers. They work quite similarly to pretty much any 2D-platformer/fighter you can think of; imagine Super Mario Bros. meets Street Fighter, I guess. In these, your general goal is to move forward, and the usual impediment are the enemies, who you can beat with your kick (B Button) to earn points. Being hit by enemies will take away one of your HP, and hitting zero HP makes you lose one of your lives. The initial values for each depends on which "mode" you chose.

^sr1|

There is one thing worth noting. In some areas - like that pictured to the right - you can find odd-looking walls. There, you can hold the Down Button on the D-Pad to shatter the walls. Various things can pop out, such as your cat to heal you or clocks to halt the movements of enemies. Whenever you see one, it would be a good idea to deal with them.

Walkthrough

Start-Up

At the title screen, press Start and you will be allowed to select which mode you would like to use: "Boys" (left) or "Girls" (right). In the Boys mode - mistranslation? - you will play with 4 HP and 3 lives, while you get 6 HP and 5 lives in the Girls mode. Of course, those both are initial values. There's no real other significance that is known.

Part 1 - Story Stage

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

Mother - "How long are you going to sleep, Usagi? Naru's mom spent some time on that Gem Shop bargain. Weren't you going to check it out?"

Usagi (You) - "I can't believe I forgot! I better get going, and fast!"

Mother - "You'd better hurry. You don't want to miss anything!"

Usagi - "I am so late! Mama, I'll be back!"

When you gain control of Usagi, go to the right for a while and you'll soon see a path going further towards the background. Press Up to go there to the next area, then go far to the left and repeat this action. Further to the right, you will encounter Naru (you can speak with her to confirm this); enter the shop nearby and deal with the scene.

When you're done, you can head further to the right and into the next-accessible building to play a game, "Sailor Game". It's a simple game where you must use the A Button to jump and the B Button to shoot at some hamburger patties in an attempt to get them off of the platter. There's no purpose to doing so, though.

For now, return back to your house and use the B Button to speak with the cat nearby, Luna. After, return to the Gem Shop and speak with the woman inside. (Had you spoken to other people, you would have learned that other people who bought gems have begun to feel weak.) This will bring you to the platformer part of this portion of the game.

Part 1 - Platformer Stage

For now, simply going to the right and defeating any enemies in the way will suffice. This is simply done by using the B Button to kick. There's nothing special about this part, even when you go into the next area. The only thing of note in this case are the crumbling walls, which you can press Down in front of for various power-ups.

At the end of the area, you'll find the boss to fight, the person impersonating Naru's mother. She isn't particularly difficult to beat. For the most part, she'll float around to try and hit you, or try to grab you for the same. Basically, duck under her when she flies overhead, and otherwise just kick her when she lands. It'll take about 16 hits to win the fight.

After the battle, there will be a cutscene with some magician-looking man, Tuxedo Mask.

Tuxedo Mask - "You're pretty good, Sailor Moon."

Usagi - "Huh!? Who?"

Luna - "Usagi, what happened?"

Usagi - "... Cute..."

Then the next part begins.

Part 2 - Story Stage

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

Usagi - "It's the end for me. I'm late again!"

Teacher - "Not only that, look at this score. This is your paper.

Usagi - "30 points!? I HATE English!"

When you gain control of Usagi, go right and through the door. After the brief comment from Usagi regarding it being lunch time, go to the far right. When you see the boy, go through the next open door to the right and speak with Luna the cat, who will mention some weird music coming from the school's studio. Return into the hall and go into the next door to the left, then another door to the left, then walk all of the way left into another area.

Speak with the lone girl there. After doing so, go right an area and through the rightmost door. In this area, go far to the left and speak with Luna to begin the platformer stage.

Part 2 - Platformer Stage

This stage is a bit more interesting than the previous one, mostly because of the enemies. In this area, the enemies will mostly consist of small tree-stump-like enemies; you can usually jump over them or kick them into other enemies, but if some of the bat enemies are around, it's probably best to just kick 'em. (Ignore the bats entirely - it's kinda hard to jump-kick most enemies without being hit.)

The second area features bats more prominently than the previous stage. In this case, they'll mostly fly at one of three levels: high (in which case you should ignore them or duck), face-level (kick 'em), or ground-level (jump). A few will fly up and down between these levels, in which case you'll just have to figure out your own timing. Nothing else special about this part, though.

The level boss will mosrly attempt to fly all about the arena in an attempt to hit you whilst flying, rarely landing to shoot sonic waves at you. The flying can mostly be avoided by jumping or ducking, and the sonic waves by jumping. As for an offense, you'll mostly have to just hit her when you can, like turning around after jumping over her to kick her in the rear, or stuff like that. There was a power-up you could've gotten in this level to shoot projectiles, which is immensely helpful if you still have it.

After that boss, you'll need to go far to the right to fight another. It's a pretty simple boss, though: he mostly jumps around to hit you, sometimes shooting a projectile. Just kick him when he's on the ground.

Part 3 - Story Stage

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

Usagi - "Professor Haruna's been working out recently. She's in that sports gym. I'm sure it's nearby."

Naru - "Hey, why don't we try going there, too?"

Usagi - "Right! That's exactly what I wanted!"

When gain control, go to the right and into the next building. You'll automatically go over to speak with the receptionist, and Naru will leave for the obstacle course. Go into the next door to the right, then go further right and through the hallway in the background. Go left and speak with the woman there, who senses something to be wrong, then go into the next door to the right. Speak with Naru's mother there, then leave the room.

Go into the room to the far left, then do so again in the next hall. There, go to the right and speak with the man, then go back left to speak with Luna. When you regain control after the brief scene, go to the right and press Up near the doorway to find that Professor Haruna is trapped, which leads to...

Part 3 - Platformer Stage

This stage isn't particularly special, especially given that a lot of the last stage's stuff could apply here. The birds you'll see flying throughout the level are much like the bats in the previous one: kick them when they're at face-level, and otherwise just dodge them. You will, at times, also see black goop falling from the ceiling - for the most part, they won't fall from right above you, but just ahead and behind of you, meaning that you can simply stop and wait for them to fall.

The second portion of the stage features these black blobs more prolifically, but that's about it. The third portion, following that, completely removes the birds and blobs. Instead, you'll just fight a swarm of enemies, much like in the first stage. At the end will be the boss. After the brief scene, you'll regain control; go to the right and speak with Luna. Then following that.will be a bit of brief platforming against birds and blobs before you finally get to deal with the boss battle.

In this boss battle, you won't him much different than you did the previous time you fought him, other than the more common usage of a projectile attack and a flying cartwheel thing that you have to jump over. Otherwise, same as before: kick him when he's standing still.

Part 4 - Platformer Stage

The fourth part of the storyline immediately shoots you into the platforming part, with only a brief comment by a confused Usagi as to her current location. There, use Down on the D-Pad to destroy the rightmost rock wall and Luna will fall out. Speak with her to head to the main part of the stage.

This stage will mostly feature some old enemies. Most prominent are the bats (kick at head-level, and otherwise jump/duck) and the spiky stump things (kick them into other enemies, or just jump over them). The second area is much the same. In the third, you can destroy some walls to find Luna, which you are intended to do; this results in a full heal and you progressing to part four of the stage.

The fourth and fifth areas will continue to follow the themes of the first two: bats and stumps. The sixth and seventh areas will begin to throw some humanoid enemies into the formula in lieu of those enemies, but they're easy to kick away. In the eighth area, go to the far right to speak with a fake Luna before going left to speak with Luna and warp to the ninth area. There and in the tenth area, you'll fight mostly humanoids and fireballs yet again. Simply kick-'n-dodge and move on. In the eleventh area, you'll find Luna; speak with her, then continue to the right to begin the boss battle.

When the battle begins, Jedite will mostly rely on two skills: his ability to flip to the ceiling, then to the floor (in the center or the corner), and his ability to shoot projectiles. So long as you're able to predict where he'll land during the former - it cycles from center to the right to the center to the left and back again - you can easily tell where to place yourself to begin kicking him, so long as you remain conscious to dodge the projectiles he shoots.

After another brief scene, you'll be fighting Queen Beryl. She mostly will rely the squid above to shoot lightning. The squid will shoot lightning at two random places among the center, left side, and right side - there's no real way to predict which way it'll go, so, in a way, winning this battle is more about luck than anything. Simply get to Beryl when she appears and kick her as much as you can.

And so, with that, the game ends. Below is the translation of the ending dialogue, but, ultimately, congrats!

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

Queen Beryl - "Heh heh heh. Did you actually think that you'd win? I'll fight you again later. I look forward to that time."

Usagi - "Wait! I said wait! You..."

Tuxedo Mask - "Sailor Moon. So you've fought this far? I guess you win, eh? Never run away from your duties."

Luna - "That's right, Sailor Moon! The battle isn't over yet! But that's enough ... for today."

Usagi - "Right! But I'm ready to take them on anytime! And transform into the Warrior of Love and Justice, Sailor Moon! Oh, yes!!
