Introduction

Hi, and welcome to another FAQ of mine. This FAQ covers Booby Boys. ... ... ... I didn't choose the game because of the name. At least, not entirely. >_> In any case, Booby Boys is a simple but entertaining top-down action game where your essential goal is to collect everything in a given level and then leave it. It's not a unique formula - I've been seeing this quite often as I've FAQed more and more GB games this past month - but it works, it makes the game somewhat easy to FAQ, and ... well, I'm bored! XD

It's been over twenty years since this game's launch in 1993 by the Nihon Bussan company. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Overview

At the title menu, there are three options:

  • 1 Player: This will start up a single-player variation of the game, from scratch.
  • Password: This will let you restart an old game using a password.
  • VS. Mode: This probably requires the use of two GameBoys, two cartridges, and a link cable, meaning I have no idea as to the rules surrounding this mode.

When gameplay begins without the use of a password, you get to choose the difficulty. The difficulty mostly affects the movement speed and number of enemies in a level.

Gameplay in Booby Boys is very simple. The goal of the level is to collect all of the sparkling chests. In doing so, a key will appear, which you can bring to a door in the level to go to the next one. There are ten levels in each world, and you freely choose to do each world in any order you want.

The main impediment to this process -- other than the clock, which kills you if time runs out -- are the enemies. You can press the B Button to dig a hole and trap enemies within when they walk in. (Holes can also kill you on higher difficulties.) If you want to close a hole, press B while facing it; if an enemy is within, they'll die and you'll gain points. (They will be replaced with a tombstone, which cannot have a hole dug on it anymore.) You'll also possibly gain some items:

  • Armor - Briefly prevents you from being damaged.
  • Bomb - Briefly lets you use bombs (A Button) to kill enemies, a la Bomberman.
  • Boomerang - Briefly lets you use boomerangs (A Button) to kill enemies, a la Zelda.
  • Boots - Increases your speed.
  • Clock - Freezes all enemies temporarily.
  • Crystal - Turns enemies into crystals you can grab for points, a la Pac-Man.
  • Gun - Allows you to shoot enemies (A Button) to kill them for a time.
  • Shovel - For a time, when you dig holes, you will dig one additional hole in a row. (Like you'll dig holes in the two spaces in front of you, not one.)
  • Smart Bomb - Allows you to destroy all on-screen enemies five times (A Button).

Finally, some levels will have black holes on the ground - this is mostly the latter half of a world. In these instances, the black holes are warp holes that go to another part of the level, and are often required to finish the level. They always connect to the nearest one, however, so the location is usually obvious. If there isn't a black hole within a reasonable range of one, it goes to another part of the level: these levels usually have around double the time and chests of the prior levels in the world to compensate. Just so you know.

When you die by being hit by an enemy, walking off of the grassy terrain (into water or the like), or running out of time, you will lose a life. You will initially have three of them. When all are gone, you will be given the password to the level you were on when you died and be returned to the title screen.

Walkthrough

Some General Notes

First and foremost, this game's gameplay primarily works on a collection basis; as in, your goal is to get all of the chests, the key, and run to the door. Furthermore, the enemies are randomized and so are their movements. Thus, a walkthrough for this game would simply consist of finding the chests and going to the door for most of the levels in the game. And so you have what this walkthrough will consist of for most levels: a simple map of the level, sewn together from screenshots, which will show you precisely where each chest and the door is. From there, you will be able to tell easily which path you might go on to find the chests.

Also, for the sake of nomenclature and bookkeeping... When you start up a new game, you will be shown a screen with six icons on it. Each leads to one of the worlds, which will consist of ten levels and a boss. We will be covering these levels from left to right, then up and down; they will be so named Worlds 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6, for that reason. When it comes to the game's passwords, they will also take into consideration that order.

Pre-Battle Text Translation: "Mwa ha ha ha ha! So, you think you can just barge in here unannounced? Prepare to die, you insolent boob!"

Boss Details: This elephantine boss will essentially just move horizontally along the north side of the arena, periodically shooting rings at you. These rings will dissipate after a certain distance; in fact, if you were to hug the southern wall where the chest is, you wouldn't be hurt. Grab that chest and get the gun that should appear nearby. Go north and simply shoot the boss. If you find an area where he doesn't shoot a ring at you on either pass (going left or going right), then you can stay in that area and simply pound him with lasers; just be careful of the other enemies that will appear nearby. Go north and speak with the girl to finish.

Post-Battle Text Translation: "Thanks for saving me! But there are other captured girls out there... You should hurry and save them, too!"

Pre-Battle Text Translation: "So, you have fire in your belly, eh? But it will more than belly fire to defeat me! Have at you!"

Boss Details: The boss will primarily have his offense be done by firing electric orbs two or three at a time. If there are two, they will head southwest and southeast; if a third is added, it will go due south. Since the chances for which is used are random, distance is the best thing. Get both of the chests near the start, then head to the northeast or northwest corner of the area. The boss will never touch these areas, although he'll get close, but he'll also never fire his attacks in this area. If you generally stick in the corner, you'll be safe, barring the easy-to-beat enemies. In this instance, I recommend following him and shooting while he moves away from you, but keep your distance. When he's on the return, backtrack to the corner without firing back and repeat as needed. Get the girl when you're done.

Post-Battle Text Translation: "Yay, you saved me! We were captured by a really nasty monster! But it just seems like a bad dream now!"

Pre-Battle Text Translation: "BEEP! BEEP! BEEP! SECURITY SYSTEM ALTERED! INTRUDER DETECTED! ENGAGE KILLSWITCH NOW!"

Boss Details: This boss is pretty annoying. His primary strategy is to fly around the edges of the arena and, when on the north side, shoot lasers at you. This prevents you from having a safe spot as you did in World 2. For the most part, you have to open the three chests to get the gun, then kinda copy his movements: basically, run yourself in a circle as he does, but closer to the center. This makes it a bit easier to keep up with the boss (smaller circles, less running, sooner getting to the destination) and also allows you to shoot at him. Keep it up and you won't have much of a problem here.

Post-Battle Text Translation: "Wow, you actually saved me... But plenty of monsters still await you. Good luck... You'll need it..."

Pre-Battle Text Translation: "Oh, what a tangled web I weave... Try as you may, you cannot leave! Hee hee hee..."

Boss Details: This boss will move frantically and unpredictably: it will sometimes move fast, and sometimes slow, a fact that will probably deceive you and get you run over. The only predictable part is that it moves kinda like a Space Invader: across the arena, down some, then across again, and then going up in this manner when it hits the boss. In addition, the boss will fire a number of projectiles at seemingly random times. Your main advantage in this fight will be your ability to abuse its Space Invader-like movement. Quickly grab the four chests for the gun, then get north of the boss! This way, its projectiles won't hit you and, for a while, it will not be moving northward, making your only threat the occasionally-respawning enemies. For the most part, it will be wide open to your shots, so simply blast it to oblivion, then speak with the girl after the fight.

Post-Battle Text Translation: "Like, thanks for rescuing me and junk! I was, like, totally scared and stuff! See ya later or whatever!"

Pre-Battle Text Translation: "WARNING! WARNING! INTRUDER ALERT! INTRUDER ALTER! STOP THE HUMANOID! DESTROY! DESTROY! KILL! KILL! KILL!"

Boss Details: This boss is by far the most difficult one thus far. This squid-bot boss will first move from side-to-side along the north side of the field for about two loops from left to right, shooting lasers to the south all the while. Then he will rush to the south side and repeat this, with the lasers now going north. It is very difficult to hit him without being hit. What I did was grab the four chests for the gun, then essentially just make sure that the boss and me were never lined up (thus preventing him from suddenly rushing into me when he swaps sides). As he swapped, I shot him several times in passing, then just looped this a lot. When you're done, go north and speak with the girl.

Post-Battle Text Translation: "You did a great job saving me! But one girl still needs to be rescued. So hurry up and get to it!"

Pre-Battle Text Translation: "What a pity, Mr. Booby... You have some so far and fought so hard just to be destroyed by us!"

Boss Details: This hydra-like boss is essentially a more difficult version of the boss you fought at the end of World 2. He will fire balls of energy two or three at a time; two will always go southwest and southeast, and a third - if it is fired - will always go south. Unlike World 2's boss, this one will more fully from side to side, and sometimes dip into the southwest and southeast corners when he reaches those walls. However, your advantages come in with the fact that he does not always touch the walls: at times, he will be distant from it. For example, when he comes from the southeast corner, the narrow spot next to the east wall is vacant. In that instance, you could abuse this most fully by getting near the northeast corner, sticking on the east wall, and wailing on the boss as he comes by.

Final Stage

This stage - the final boss - will be fought the same way, regardless of the order in which you beat every world. Just so you know.

Pre-Battle Text Translation: "These maidens were the key to my rebirth as a hot, young babe! Your meddling will cost you your life!"

Final Boss Details: This boss will move rather fast from side to side along the northern half of the arena, periodically firing fireballs from her mouth. She will also, at times, lurch southward to try to damage you. For the most part, I followed a strategy akin to how we handled to the World 2 boss. After getting the gun from the four chests, get to the side of the arena, in line with the Medusa head. (Slide in as she is moving away.) When you do so, just stand there and mash the A Button to fire the gun. Eventually, she'll come back and be hit by some of those lasers; as she gets nearer, slide southward out of her reach, then slide back north as she leaves. Repeat this lengthy process as is needed until you win. Once you beat her, go north and rescue the last maiden.

Post-Battle Text Translation:

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

Maiden #6 - "You rescued me! I was so afraid nobody would come! Thank you so much, from the bottom of my heart!"

Mr. Booby - "Yup, it looks like everything turned out juuuuust fine! Now, to go back to our own time, ladies!"

The credits will then roll. Congrats!

Stage Passwords

You can use the second option from the title screen to enter these passwords; use Up/Down to change the number in the chosen slot, Left/Right to change slots, and Start to enter the password. Note that these passwords will assume you go through Worlds 1 through 6 in consecutive order. (That means left-to-right then up-down on the world selection screen: the top row is Worlds 1, 2, and 3, and the bottom row is Worlds 4, 5, and 6, for the sake of this list.) These are also passwords that will change based on the game difficulty, so choose the one appropriate for your difficulty.
