Introduction

Hi, and welcome to another of my recent GameBoy FAQs. The subject of this one will be Gamera: Daikai Jukuchuu Kessen, which translates as "Gamera: Guardian of the Universe". Gamera ... to be honest, it's a little stereotypical: if I didn't know better, I'd almost say it was by a racist American company. It is essentially a rip-off of Godzilla in its own way, although as if 'Zilla was good: it basically is the story of an obscenely large lizard (okay, turtle) rescuing Japan. The idea of huge monsters fighting ... I mean, I just don't grasp why this stuff has proliferated so: it's become a (negative) stereotype of the modern Japanese culture. But, despite this, it makes for a nice game. Anyhow, politics aside....

It's been nearly twenty years since this game's launch in 1995 by Angel and Daiei NH. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Overview

Gamera: Daikai Jukuchuu Kessen mostly is a turn-based one-on-one fighting game. When actual gameplay begins in a stage, you will see your yellow health gauge (and that of the enemy's) at the top: they go down as the respective target takes damage. At this point, you can press buttons in certain sequences or combinations to cause an action; see the Move List section for details.

The goal of the game is to use these moves in a (somewhat) strategic manner so as to remove all of the enemy's health. You both will begin with 36 HP. The main strategic element of this fight is whether a move will hit or will not hit, though that's generally logical. There's also the notion of super-effective moves, which deal extra damage to the opponent. The level ends when someone's HP hits zero; if it ends in your favor, then that counts as a win. Matches are played in a "best of 3" style: whoever wins two matches first wins. If you do win, you go to the next level.

Move List

"X -> Y" indicates sequential "X then Y" pressing, whereas "X + Y" indicates simultaneous "X and Y" presses. The latter will be grouped in parentheses for your viewing convenience.

  • A: Big roar - this will increase the amount of damage you do on future attacks
  • Up + A: Jump to dodge most attacks
  • Down + A: Dodge and duck to bypass high attacks
  • Left + A: Move left (which is backwards)
  • Right + A: Move forward

  • B -> A: Claw attack - this seems to hit, even if the enemy backs off
  • B -> (Up + A): Flight - this brings combat into the air, meaning the enemy cannot hit you until getting into the air themselves, usually
  • B -> (Down + A): Low-aiming claw attack
  • B -> (Left + A): Jump
  • B -> (Right + A): Super punch

  • B -> B -> A: Lift and throw the enemy (when close); middle-aimed fire breath (when far off); high-aiming attack (opponent is in air)
  • B -> B -> (Up + A): Leaping kick - you'll go in the air, then hit the enemy (when close); or a high-aimed fire breath (when far off); headbutt the opponent (foe is in mid-air)
  • B -> B -> (Down + A): Tail whip (when close); or a low-aimed fire breath (when far off); sky slam (foe is in mid-air)
  • B -> B -> (Left + A): Strike the enemy as you back off (when close); or a middle-aimed fire breath (when far off); retreat and breath fire at the foe (foe is in mid-air)
  • B -> B -> (Right + A): Choke the enemy (when close); a spinning tackle (when far off); choke the mid-air opponent (foe is in mid-air)

Should you choose to go airbone (B, then Up+A), a different set of actions is available.

  • A: Hover in air (do nothing)
  • Up + A: Hover in air (do nothing)
  • Down + A: Land on the enemy
  • Left + A: Land on the ground further back to the left
  • Right + A: Land on the ground to the right, closer to the enemy

  • B -> A: Pin wheel
  • B -> (Up + A): Hover in air (do nothing)
  • B -> (Down + A): Attack the enemy and then land
  • B -> (Left + A): Fly back to the left, but remain airborne
  • B -> (Right + A): Hover in air (do nothing)

  • B -> B -> A: Super spin attack
  • B -> B -> (Up + A): Throw the enemy while you are airborne - only works on ground enemies
  • B -> B -> (Down + A): Land on the ground and damage the enemy
  • B -> B -> (Left + A): Punch the enemy whilst in mid-air
  • B -> B -> (Right + A): Land on the ground and bite the enemy

And, should you get knocked down in battle without losing all your health...

  • A: Stand up
  • Up + A: Jump up
  • Down + A: Get up and duck the next attack
  • Left + A: Get up and move back
  • Right + A: Get up and move forward while ducking

  • B -> A: Pin wheel
  • B -> (Up + A): Leap into flight
  • B -> (Down + A): Do a low-aiming attack
  • B -> (Left + A): Jump up and to the left
  • B -> (Right + A): High-powered punch attack

  • B -> B -> A: Super spin attack
  • B -> B -> (Up + A): Flame high
  • B -> B -> (Down + A): Choke the enemy
  • B -> B -> (Left + A): Move back while flaming the enemy
  • B -> B -> (Right + A): Do a spinning tackle

Walkthrough

As a forenote, keep in mind that these are just the general tactics that the enemy tends to use in their battles, and the counters or other strategies you can use. They are not step-by-step - since the enemy's strategy is very randomized - and neither will they be all-applying, but they should work fine on a general level. Of course, I'm open to suggestions, since this is very observation-based.

  • Battle 1 - Gyaos: This enemy will mostly focus on self-buffing when it goes airborne, but it will mostly be a ground fight - and, even then, Gyaos likes to buff itself every two or three turns. Despite all this, I recommend going airborne, then using the throwing move (B, B, Up+A) while the combat is on the ground, since it does remove about 1/4 of Gyaos's HP. When the fight is in the air, it's better to use the super-spin (B, B, A).

  • Battle 2 - Viras: This plays out much the same as the first: Viras will favor jumping-dodges more than roaring, though he still uses a lot of close-range attacks, primarily choking ones. Thus, remaining airborne is very helpful to staying alive. In this case, I'd go first into the air (B, Up+A), then use bite attack (B, B, Right+A), then just loop those two. The most important thing I found in this battle was to vary your offense, since it seems repetition of moves tends to cause problems with the enemy dodging too much. Other attacks work somewhat well.

  • Battle 3 - Guilon: Guilon, which is pretty much a sword, won't take long to try and kill you, typically using sword attacks for heavy damage right off the bat. In this case, keeping to the ground is pretty necessary, since Guilon will dodge by most of your aerial attacks. Like the previous fight, varying your offense is the most you can do, since repeat attacks tend to result in dodges and retaliations from the enemy. Nothing in particular is more effective than usual, but throws are heavy-damaging as ever.

  • Battle 4 - Gyaos: Gyaos is a lot more on the offensive than in the previous fight, and a lot stronger, too, easily able to wipe out a quarter of your health in a single attack. He won't use too many far-off attacks, either, which is the main reason for our ability to win this fight with fireballs easily enough. Leaping into the air will help you by dodging most of his attacks, assuming he doesn't attack you back as well. The most effective attack I found, though, was the high-aimed fireball attack (B, B, Up+A) - back off for a few turns until you're both far apart. Since Gyaos tends to jump to dodge, this will hit him in mid-air for heavy damage, especially if he takes off, as he has a tendency to do so in the late fight. Feel free to use the other moves, though. But, again, repeat attacks tend to result in problems with dodges and the like.

  • Battle 5 - Gamera: In this extra fight found after the credits roll, you will essentially fight Gamera while being Gamera. Gamera will love to vary between being in mid-air or on the ground, and will usually stick in either position for a good while. For this fight, I like to back off for a bit. Gamera will rarely risk coming near you, so that's a good time to use some big roars (A Button) until he gets close; you'll usually be able to hack off at least half his health in a single blow, then. Keeping the offense varied will be important, though; almost every time I repeated an attack, it was dodged.
