While I do write all of my guides for free, it does take a lot of time and effort to put them together. If you're feeling generous and want to show your appreciation, I am gladly accepting donations. I don't know exactly what the donations will be used for, but just know that you would definitely be helping me make more quality FAQs! Even the smallest donation amounts are appreciated, and they are a great way to say how much you appreciate the work I do. Introduction

Welcome to another of my GameBoy FAQs. This subject of this one is the game Zoo Block. Zoo Block ... umm, to put it simply, is an interesting puzzle game. It kinda reminds me of Puyo Puyo, to be honest, but more restrictive. It is essentially a matching-based puzzle game that gets obscenely hard early on. It's only further evidence that Sachen - the developer of this, and a number of other unlicensed/plagiarized NES and GameBoy games - barely cared for their work that wasn't illegitimate in some form. Which is sad: the games they've released without ripping off others have a fair bit of potential.

It's been over twenty years since this game's launch by Sachen. And, since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Gameplay Overview

Zoo Block is a pretty simple game. When you begin, you can press Start to select the level to play: since you need to use this FAQ, and the game gets obscenely difficult pretty much after Level 01, Level 01 is the best and the simplest of the levels.

The object of the game is simple. You need to match up icons of animals with other animals. You will be releasing those found at the top of the screen: you can press Left/Right to move the icon and the hammer left or right to aim for different areas, Down to release the block, and A or B to go through the types of animals. There are six animal types: going as if you pressed A, you'll see a pig, an octpus, a bird, a snake, a cat, and a bear. They will be displayed in the reverse of that order, should you press B in lieu of A. You will want to release these animals via the hammer so that they land on or directly next to animal(s) of the same type: cats next to cats, birds next to birds, and so on. You cannot launch animals if a match will be created. When a match is made, the matched animals will disappear, you will earn 10 points, and the "BLOCK" counter at the right will go down one. When that counter hits zero, the level ends.

As you play, some of the icons in the puzzle will actually change their shape. These are power-ups, and they are triggered by simply landing any animal on them. They have a variety of effects: time your drop well to use them!

  • 100: Gives 100 points
  • 500: Gives 500 points
  • Bomb: Destroys all of the animals in the row
  • Clock: Freezes time briefly, thus preventing more animals from appearing on the board
  • Rocket: Destroys all of the animals above or below the power-up, depending on where it points

As time goes on, more and more animals will be added to the stack - the timer in the lower-right counter, beneath the man, counts down the seconds until a new row is added. When they get too high, the game will end, so being fast in your matching is key to success.

There are 15 levels in the game, which will become (for the most part) increasingly difficult as time goes on. After that, you will view a small cutscene with no text and a credits roll. (To the curious, the game left in the title for "TESTER" in the credits, but no one was named.)

General Tips

  • Work from the top, going down! The animals at the highest points of the stack will be the biggest threat when it comes to the addition of new ones: they would be the ones that "pierce" that barrier that causes the game to end, since it doesn't matter how many cross that invisible line, so much as the fact that it does happen.

  • Be genocidal! Zoo Block highly relies on the mechanic of you matching your pieces to those in the puzzle. It will just be easier to wipe out the animals by their species where possible, though focusing on the top is still a good idea!

  • Time those power-ups! Especially in higher levels (well, above Level 02 =P), you'll want to wipe out lots and lots of animals at once to maintain your survival. Doing that is more essential than anything. In most cases, the Bomb will be the most helpful, since it eliminates an entire row at once; however, if the column that the power-up is in is threatening you by being too high, using a rocket will help more, probably.

Level Stats

Each level will have a pre-set number of blocks to remove from it, and a pre-set time that passes before another row appears. Knowing this info may help you, so I'll put it here if you want. The row times are estimated in decimals where needed, based on the number of frames it took for one row to be added and then divided by 60 (this game's equivalent to 1 second).

Level # Blocks Row Time
Level 01 5 8.000 seconds
Level 02 90 7.000 seconds
Level 03 85 7.000 seconds
Level 04 85 7.000 seconds
Level 05 80 7.000 seconds
Level 06 80 6.333 seconds
Level 07 75 6.000 seconds
Level 08 75 6.000 seconds
Level 09 70 5.666 seconds
Level 10 70 5.500 seconds
Level 11 65 5.000 seconds
Level 12 60 4.666 seconds
Level 13 60 4.333 seconds
Level 14 50 4.000 seconds
Level 15 50 3.500 seconds
