Introduction

Welcome to my latest GB FAQ, and one of my first for a game such as this! This FAQ covers the action-RPG Ninja Taro. The Taro series is mostly known moreso by the Japanese counterpart, Jajamaru or Ninja-kun, whichever you prefer; most of the series's entries have actually been Japan-only. One of my more recent FAQs - Jajamaru Ninpou Chou (NES/FC) - was one such game, and a decent one at that. In any case, after having been recommended this to FAQ (by AdamL, I believe), I will ... well, FAQ it! I mean, it's a good game, especially when compared to most of the GB games that have gone without FAQs, and I rarely need more logic than that. =P

It's been some twenty years since this game's launch. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Walkthrough

A Few Quick Notes...

Firstly, I will not be covering random enemy encounters in great detail (if any at all); I mean of those you find in the overworld or places of the like that have no relevance to the plot whatsoever. This is due to their nature of random (albeit predictable once they get going) movements, and also in part because many of them seem to have varying stats. For example, I found enemies - of the same kind - varying their HP and power as time went on. Additionally, the powers of weapons you use differ unusually between the monsters, so it's hard to tell what to use as a base for these calculations, even if the weapons themselves were of the same power. As such, most of the walkthrough is a literal walkthrough from area to area, rarely taking into account enemy encounters, with no enemy statistics detailed.

The other thing I would like to note is the nomenclature I use for denoting parts of an individual dungeon or area. For example, you'll see me say Overworld, Area 2 or something of the like. Relatively few areas in the game have a formal denotation for what to call them; some areas, by this restriction, simply have to be called dungeons or villages or the overworld, with no further elaboration. As for the "Area #" notation, that is basically as it is kept track from the last division. For example, I would visit a "Village", then go through to "Overworld, Area 4", another town, then I'd start over the notations for the overworld at "Overworld, Area 1", so long as this part of the overworld was distinctly separate - it makes it easier to understand what the heck I'm saying (most of the time). Were a dungeon to be in, say, Overworld, Area 3, and then I enter the dungeon and finish it, I would still come out at Overworld, Area 3. I know, it's a bit confusing. Blame the devs.

Lord Nobu's Mission Begins

Sectional Flowchart

Beginning in the Overworld

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] N-Sword Power +1 [_] Max HP +2 [_] N-Star Power +1

House: When the game begins, you'll be told simply that the Lord Nobu seeks the best ninja for hire; he is in the city of Geko to the west, so that will be your next target. Use the southwest corner of this house to exit to the overworld proper. There, you will want to begin by opening the pause menu and using A/B and the D-Pad to select the commands for you to fight with. Right now, you simply have the N-Stars (POW: 1; long-range) and N-Sword (POW: 1; short-range), so you'll have to deal with those.

Overworld, Area 1: In this area of the overworld, you won't find too many enemies; they'll all be floating heads who will simply take a single hit to beat, so using the Ninja Stars is probably best. Go north to the next area (there will be two paths heading north, although which you use is of little consequence).

Overworld, Area 2: When you begin walking around here, it would be best to head to the southwest side of the area first. In that area, there is a path you can walk north along to find a chest. (You will have to beat a walking bush-type enemy on the way, but they're easy enough with the Stars.) This item will be a Sword Powerup - essentially boosting the power of your sword by one! There's nothing else of import here, so move northwest to the next area.

Overworld, Area 3: In this riverside area, go northeast to the corner and descend into the dungeon area there.

Dungeon, Area 1: The initial area of the dungeon is pretty easy to deal with: just go east, south, west, and south to the next area.

Dungeon, Area 2: Here, just head to the southeast corner and you'll find a chest. Be sure to avoid the knights on the way, though, since they are quite able to kill you in a single hit! In any case, the chest has a Max HP +2 power-up! Yay! Once that's grabbed, quickly head back outside. Yeah, a brief dungeon, huh...

Overworld, Area 3: When you return back to the overworld, cross the bridge to your west and continue west into the next area.

Overworld, Area 4: Here, there's still not much, although there's quite a few enemies. Go southwest and defeat the enemies on the way. In the corner, you can find a chest with a N-Star Power +1 power-up. Yay! In any case, go north from there and use the door in the northwest corner.

Apprehending the Bad Ninja

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Overall Power +1 [_] Lost Scroll

Village: When you arrive in the city, feel free to speak with people and to save in the southeast corner of the town. When you're done (that being all there really is), speak with the samurai in the northwest corner of the town. He will mention that a ninja broke into his house last night, stealing his special scroll as he did so. Return outside the village.

Overworld, Area 3: Go east from where you exit to this area again, near the river. Head back into the dungeon in the northeast corner.

^sr1|The false wall.

Dungeon, Area 2: Proceed through the dungeon as you did before. This time around, in the second area, head to the southwest corner, as pictured in the nearby screenshot. The wall in that western alcove, had you spoken to the samurai in Geko several times to learn this, will be walk-throughable. Go on through.

Dungeon, Area 3: Head to the west and thus to the southwest corner. There, you will find a chest containing powerful; it boosts your Overall Power +1! Head northwest of the area entrance and you'll find an enemy blocking the path; you'll probably have to beat him to avoid losing a ton of health, so just go ahead and beat him with Stars, since he won't retaliate. Beyond, you'll find a statue. Walk on it to teleport.

Dungeon, Area 4 - BOSS AREA: Head to the west side of the area and you'll find another statue like the one you used to get here. As you step near it, though, someone calls out and rushes you from the north! The Bad Ninja will be rushing throughout the area in an attempt to hurt you. He mostly will stick to the edges, though, and doesn't change his path (beyond turning at the corners) when you can see him, meaning it's easy to get to the edge of the path and just jab him from the side. After the battle, you'll get the Lost Scroll. With that done, continue back to to the village; ignore the statue you just tried to use, though, since it's pointless for the moment.

Village: Here, head back to the samurai and speak with him to hand over his scroll; he will also happen to find a key in the bag that held it, and he'll give this key to you. Go south and use it to unlock the gate.

More in the Overworld

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Max HP +2

Overworld, Area 1: Nothing much here. Just progress to the southwest corner and to the next area. Be sure to do so via the mountains, though!

Overworld, Area 2: Go northwest from the start and you'll soon find a path to ground level. Follow it to the southwest corner. Open the chest for a Max HP +2 powerup, then continue into the next area.

Overworld, Area 3: Here, go north onto the mountain, then north some more and down to ground level again. Beware the Cyclopes on the way, though, since they tend to rush all of a sudden into you, taking away a nice chunk of HP, too (25% if you're at your best). Anyhow, it's a linear path to the next area.

Overworld, Area 4: Nothing much here, either; at least, nothing you can currently reach. Head southwest to the center of the area, then southeast to the next.

Overworld, Area 3: (You're now in the southwest portion.) Go south an area.

Overworld, Area 5: Go east, south, and west to the southwest corner of the area, then south to the next area. (Yeah, there's another unreachable chest up there. >_<)

The Ogre

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Murasame [_] Dagger [_] Dagger Power +1 [_] Max HP +2 [_] Max HP +2

Geko Castle: Ah, it's about time we got here. In any case, go south and east into the castle. Go south and east an area so you can go north into the forested area, then go west and upstairs. There, speak with Lord Nobu and he will task you with confirming the rumors of Shin's - the main antagonist - defeat of Takeda. He will also hand you the Murasame sword. The other man up here will give you the Dagger weapon. Frankly, both are inferior to the N-Sword, since it should have a power of 3, whereas those have a power of 2, all assuming you've picked up every power-up thus far. In any case, head back to the town entrance, south an area, then head southwest from the town.

Overworld: Go west and to the opening in the trees. Head south from there along the path to the next area: be sure to hang west as you do so. In the next area, do you see that path off to the north? Go along it real quick to find a chest; in it, you'll find a Dagger Power +1 item.

Geko Castle: That'll be it, though, for that section of the overworld. Go east an area when back in Geko to find the person to save/heal at, then go back to the northwest town entrance. Head east an area from there and you will see an old man near the northern forest. Go along the path to the north: as it turns out, the trees that look different and immediately impede your path - in this case, anyhow - are fake! This brings you to a Max HP +2 power-up! Anyhow, return to the old man and go east an area.

Overworld, Area 1: When you arrive here, go south and you'll find a narrow eastbound path. Follow it, but be careful; some very powerful samurais line the path, and they take too long to beat. Wisely using your herbs as you go along so your HP doesn't hit zero is pretty much required to bypass them.

Overworld, Area 2: In the next area, go due east: the tree that seems to be blocking your path actually can be walked on, so continue following the path eastward.

^sr2|

Overworld, Area 3: Head east along the path, carefully defeating the samurai on the way. (Alternating Daggers and N-Stars works well to keep a distant, but effective offense.) As you near the end, you'll need to walk north through some of the trees, since some are fake. It would be the second column of two trees, like that I'm lined up with in the nearby screenshot. From there, go northeast and use the statue to warp.

Overworld, Area 4: Go east and step on the southeastern statue to trigger the boss battle. You'll subsequently lose, but don't worry.

Backtracking to Geko

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Ladder [_] N-Star Power +1 [_] Overall Power +1 [_] Murasame Power +1

Overworld: You'll return near the starting house. Speak with the old man there and he will give you a Ladder, then tell you to go to Iga to find his friend, the ninja master Kondo. First, though, you will need to backtrack through the overworld to Geko. There are a few spots I would like you to visit on the way.

There is an area several parts after the first village. This area is just after you bypass a cliff with a ton of Cyclops on it. In the forest in the next area, go to the southwest corner, near the mushroom. Go north along its west side to go through the trees to another path. Go to the end of that path and north to reach a chest, and within, you'll find a N-Star Power +1 upgrade!

In the next area, you can go due north and use the Ladder on the short cliff to be able to climb it, then go west to the previous area where you can find another chest. This is an Overall Power +1 upgrade. If you instead choose to use the Ladder in the area to the south, you'll get a Murasame Power +1 upgrade. Obviously, the former is preferred.

Geko Castle: When you return here, head back to meet with Nobu, but speak with the servant near him instead, who will allow you to take the ladder he has in his storage. The storage is in the southwestern quarter of the town: just speak with the northernmost of the men there to get it. Be sure to grab the other of the weapon power-ups you didn't grab earlier, grab another ladder, and head southwest and out of Geko.

Heading to Omi Village

TREASURE CHECKLIST
[_] Murasame Power +1 [_] N-Star Power +1

Overworld, Area 1: You probably remember this area if you got the powerup in the second area last time. In any case, go west and south to the next area; this time, the path you use is fairly irrelevant. For reference, I'll be descending from the east side.

Overworld, Area 2: Go south and, at the short section of the cliff, use the ladder. Then go back to Geko and get another, then return here. Go down the ladder and east another area.

Overworld, Area 3: Here, go east to find another area to use a ladder at. Do so, then go back to Geko and snatch up another ladder. Return here again and ascend the ladder from before and go east to use another one. Climb up to get the Murasame Power +1 pickup, then return to the previous area.

Overworld, Area 2: Go west an area. And be sure to grab a ladder from Geko again.

^sr3|

Overworld, Area 4: Here, head northwest and south to the south-central portion of the area, just to the west of the cliff you probably saw. (Or can see in the nearby screenshot.) At the area marked in the nearby picture, walk south through the trees so you can reach the cliff to find an N-Star Power +1 pickup! ^_^ When done, go all of the way back to grab another ladder (for our waaay future convenience) and head back to the main path in this area and west to the next area.

Overworld, Area 5: Just go south to the next area.

Overworld, Area 6: Here, go west and across the bridge, then continue west towards the next area. As you do so, be careful of some ghost enemies appearing from within the trees, but that's about it.

Overworld, Area 7: Here, head to the west edge of the area, then go south and east across the river. At the end of the tree-lined path, you'll find a doorway into a village, the village of Omi. (Had you spoken to some NPCs recently in Geko, they would have noted that Kondo was dead and that his daughter had come here to Omi.)

Hunting Down Kenji

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Murasame Power +1 [_] Dagger Power +1 [_] Overall Power +1 [_] Max HP +2 [_] Fruit
[_] Herb [_] Overall Power +1

Omi Village: Here, there is not much to do, though you can save with the girl in the northwest part of the village (although she won't heal you). If you speak with the man in the only other house in the village, he'll note that a boy, Kenji, left some time ago to give food to the "girl who lives outside of the village". Hm... In any case, return to the overworld when done here.

Overworld: Go north, west, and to the next area.

Kondo's Daughter's House: Here, you will find Kondo's daughter. Speak with her and he'll be shocked at Kenji's disappearance, but suggest that he may have gone through the southern fence of Omi. (Hey! That's illegal! A sign in the village specifically stated as such! XD)

^sr5|Press A (or B) right here.

Omi Village: When you return here, head south to the doorway in the village. Then get just to the west of it and face south, like in the nearby screenshot. Press A or B and you will find yourself in another area!

Overworld, Area 1: Head due south of the entranceway into the village and you'll bump into a two-tile row of trees. Go west from there into the trees and then south to return to the main path. Go along to the south/east fork and go east and along the path there for a while; it will eventually turn into the next area.

Overworld, Area 2: In this area, you'll have to deal with whole swarms of bees at once, so it can be a bit annoying to progress without stuff like N-Change or N-Fire. In any case, if you head northwest, you can clearly see a chest: you can get at it by stepping on the tree tile to its south: the chest itself contains a Murasame Power +1 pick-up. Then go back to the entrance and south an area.

Overworld, Area 3: This area is very hard to deal with because of the swords flying everywhere; if you don't want to bother, that's fine, as it will highly tax your health. In any case, in the southwest portion of the area, you can find a chest, and step on the withering tree to reach it (just like the previous one). It contains a Dagger Power +1 pickup. Not sure how to get that southeastern chest at the moment, though... Anyhow, go north and west an area.

Overworld, Area 4: Simply head west through the bonefield (although note that a few enemies may spawn up - if that troubles you, you can go far to the north, west, then south) and south on the other side to find a statue. Step on it.

Overworld, Area 5 - BOSS AREA: Of course, as you step on the other statue here, a boss battle begins against an ogre! In this case, the ogre will periodically and predictably move from the middle of the field to the northwest to the middle to the northeast. Each time he moves (sometimes he skips this), he will leave tornados behind him. These tornados will soon move in and home in on you, but that shouldn't matter too much at near-full health (and he shouldn't have time to get off more than one or two of those). Since his movements are predictable, and you're presumably in good health, just get north of his starting position and start wailing on him with your best weapon. (In my case, it would be the Murasame: a power of 8.) When done, head on to the next area.

Overworld, Area 6: There are two chests here; one contains an Overall Power +1 pickup, and the other a Max HP +2 pickup. >_< We could've used those earlier. Use the statue again.

Overworld, Area 7: It will be here that you find Kenji! Speak with him and he'll automatically bring you back to Omi.

Omi Village: Here, Kenji will hand you some Fruit, so be sure to take it to Kondo's daughter. (Remember, she's in the area to the west once outside the village?) Before leaving, though, speak with the man just to the west of Kenji to get an Herb, and to the old man to the north of Kenji to get an Overall Power +1 upgrade! ^_^ Such nice people! Anyhow, go visit Kondo's daughter now and speak to her to get the story of how Kondo died and all that. You will learn that Kondo wrote down the secrets and results of his espionage against Shin down in the Wind, Earth, and Man Scrolls, which can only be unlocked by her, his daughter. One resides in the hands of Goro, while the other two should be in possession of friends of Kondo.

Water Spider Item Hunting

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Murasame Power +1 [_] Overall Power +1

Kondo's Daughter's Residence: Speak to her again, after hearing her story, to obtain a Water Spider: this will allow you to walk on water, the main purpose of this section. You can speak with her several more times to recall the loci of the Scrolls, should it be needed: Wind is with Goro in Iga, Earth is with a samurai, and Man is with the ninja master.

^sr4|The junction I speak of.

Overworld: Let's begin by going east from the area containing the Omi Village. In this area, go to the far east side, then south and west across the bridge to the clearing at the end of the path. You will see a place, looking like a bump, at the river, right; where the river is narrower than usual? Press the proper button there with the Water Spider equipped to cross the river to the chest on the other side; it contains a Murasame Power +1 pickup! From here, go back along the path to Geko Castle's area.

Geko Castle: While our backtracking will momentarily continue, there will be a bit of plotline here, too. When you arrive, head to speak with Lord Nobu and you will find a ninja there. Speak with him and he'll tell you of the current situation regarding Shin and the Yama province. (Huh. Had no idea this game intended to take place in Japan. I wonder where the Nintendo HQ is... =P) In any case, backtrack north from Geko to the first village of the game. ... By the way, if you already used that Water Spider (which was a good idea, obviously), you can get more from the ninja southeast of the one who carries the ladders. Like him, he'll only let you have one at a time, so while it is a good idea to pick up all of the side items, it's a ton of backtracking...

Village: In this village, there's a bit more story to deal with as well. In this case, the samurai here will grant you the Earth Scroll should you slay the creature in the eastern cavern. While we'll focus on the main quest for the moment (overworld backtracking for items), keep in this mind since the last item is very close!

Overworld: Just to the east of the village (by two areas), you'll find a familiar area. Here, you can cross the water to find a chest. The chest contains an Overall Power +1 upgrade, which is quite nice!

Okay, we're done.

The Earth Scroll

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] N-Star Power +1 [_] N-Sword Power +1 [_] N-Star Power +1 [_] N-Sword Power +1 [_] Overall Power +1
[_] Earth Scroll

Unnamed Village: Okay, let's begin actually working to find the three scrolls. Our backtracking through the overworld led us to figure out that the samurai in the northwestern part of the first village you visited is the wielder of the Earth Scroll, but he requests you defeat the beast in the eastern cavern first.

Dungeon: Firstly, the dungeon we need to work through is the one to the east of the unnamed village. We already went through it once before, so if you remember the details, you can go on those until we hit unknown territory. Those who don't need to read Beginning in the Overworld for some of the earlier details and then Apprehending the Bad Ninja for the details of our last visit. And you will need a Water Spider, so be sure to get one from Geko if you lack one.

East Cave, Area 1: On the other side, after using the statues, you will be in a new part of the overworld. Go south and use the Water Spider at the narrow part of the river there, then go west and north along the river to the next area.

East Cave, Area 2: Here, go northeast and you can find another place to use a Water Spider. (Water Spiders can be dropped, albeit pretty rarely, by enemies, so you can try some grinding to get one. Or you might want to try going back to Geko, but I'm not sure how that'll go over: remember, the Ladders we used disappeared after some time.) The chest to the south on the other side will contain an N-Star Power +1 pickup. Other than that, go back to the previous area and walk onto the black tile (a hole) in the southwestern corner of the area.

East Cave, Area 3: Head northeast from where you fall, but not yet to the next area. Head west from there to the northwest corner, which is blocked by some ... stalagmites, I guess? I can never remember. Spikes. Let's go with spikes. The corner - and thus, the chest there - is blocked by some spikes on the ground. Of those, the northernmost tile will let you pass by to the chest to get the N-Sword Power +1 pickup. Now head east to the next area.

East Cave, Area 4: In this area, you will need another Water Spider to cross, so you had better get grinding. In fact, you'll need three, and a fourth if you want some treasure. Luckily, this area auto-produces sword-like enemies that should be easily killed in one hit by now, so you can deal with them. Once you cross the gap near the entrance, cross the next one to the southeast. Then go east and north from there. The first narrow path you find along this path will take you along the intended path to a statue and to the next area; the other will take you to a N-Star Power +1 pickup in a chest. Either way, you will need Water Spiders. Once you're ready, cross onto the statue.

East Cave, Area 5 - BOSS AREA: Cross onto the other statue and, of course, a boss will appear. Initially, just stay out of the center of the arena until the four bugs commerse together into one, large bug, which will be the thing you figure. (Those small bugs will still damage you though!) All the bug will do is mostly just fly around pretty quickly, favoring the edges. It will also occasionally shoot out two of the small bugs as projectiles. Even though the bug isn't too special, even with the max health the game allows at this point, it will still two-hit-kill you (assuming a "hit" is it bumping into you), so be careful! It shouldn't take long to beat, though: it took about six or seven strikes from my 10-Power Murasame to beat it; in fact, if you stand on the tile just northwest of the center statue as the bees begin to come together, you shouldn't have a hard time with mashing A/B a bunch and getting in a good three or four hits. Anyhow, use the statue to go when you're done.

East Cave, Area 6: Go along the path and open the first chest you see for an N-Sword Power +1 pickup, and then the se cond at the end of the path for an Overall Power +1 pickup! ^_^ Use the statue at the end after.

Overworld/Village: When you do so, you will be back in the overworld, just outside of the first dungeon you went through. Go two areas to the west and into the village. Speak with the samurai and you will be given the Earth Scroll, just like that!

The Man Scroll

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] The Man Scroll

This is the easiest of the three scrolls to find. This one can be found by backtracking all of the way through the overworld to where you began the game, which happens to be in the house of the ninja master! Speak with him and he'll give you the Man Scroll!

... That was easy.

The Wind Scroll

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] N-Star Power +1 [_] Murasame Power +1 [_] Dagger Power +1 [_] Max HP +2 [_] N-Star Power +1
[_] Murasame Power +1 [_] N-Sword Power +1 [_] Wind Scroll

Overworld/Geko Castle: From the ninja master's house, now return to Geko Castle. Exit the area to the southwest and into the overworld. Go south from that area, down the cliff, and then use the westernmost southbound exit to go to the next area. Follow the path south to another.

Overworld, Area 1: Here, simply head south/southeast to the river, dodging the enemies and trees on the way. At the river, use a Water Spider to cross it to a chest containing an N-Star Power +1 pickup. Return to the other side of the river and head southwest to the next area.

Overworld, Area 2: Go south and cross the bridge, southeast and across another, then south to the next area. Nothing in this area, really, but that... and those enemies that just love to zip across the screen really quickly.

Overworld, Area 3: Be sure to equip some Herbs as you enter. Cross the bridge to the southeast of the entrance of the area to the center island of this area. As you cross it, a white flame-like ghost will zip all across it sporadically, often hitting you. This can be very taxing on your health, thus why I recommended equipping the Herbs. In the southwest corner of the island, you can cross the bridge to a chest to a Murasame Power +1 pickup. You can then return to the island, cross the bridge, and go south to the next area.

Overworld, Area 4: Here, you'll need to go southeast and cross the river with a Water Spider. (If you lack them, as you probably will by now, remember that defeating enemies can yield them.) Then you need to continue across the river and use another one to reach a forest clearing. Go south from there to an east/west fork. If you go east, you can cross the river again to find a Dagger Power +1 pickup. Otherwise, go west at the fork and along to the next area.

Iga Village: Nothing much here. Go to the west side of the village and through the narrow path between the trees (you can walk on the single "different" trees along the path, so you know).

Iga Village Tunnel System: When you initially arrive from Iga, follow the path to the cave, go underground, and follow the linear path presented by the stairs for a while. (Before going into the second tunnel, be sure to use the old man nearby to save.) At the end, you'll find Goro; speak with him to learn that he no longer has the Wind Scroll, but that the demon at the bottom of the pit stole it. (Supposedly. His tone, though...) Go along the path to the next area when underground.

"The Pit", Area 1: Here, go into the room as you enter. You can go through the wall at its southernmost portion to the hall. There is a room to the south of there, too: you can walk southward through its northeast corner (as pictured nearby) to reach the chest beyond, which contains a Max HP +2 pickup! That's about it; head to the northeast portion of the area and east to the next one.

"The Pit", Area 2: You will need several Water Spiders to be able to do anything here; however, this area is also optional, so don't worry if you don't have enough, as you'll just miss out on a power-up. In any case, use a Water Spider near the entrance to cross the first river. Then go north and east to the northernmost river crossing and cross there to an N-Star Power +1 chest. Now return to the previous area and leave it heading south.

"The Pit", Area 3: Here, you will need to go through the eastern wall of the entrance room, again as shown in the nearby picture. On the other side, simply go east and south and along the linear path to the end. Use the hole there to go down a floor.

"The Pit", Area 4: For now, just go east to the next area.

"The Pit", Area 5: When you enter, go along the second of the two northbound paths you immediately see. When you reach the fork at the end, essentially just head east to the northeast corner, then south to the end of the path and upstairs.

"The Pit", Area 6: Here, go northwest to the corner, then east and southeast to the next area.

"The Pit", Area 7: Here, go along the river until you reach a point where you can cross. Ignore it (but do note it!) and go south an area.

"The Pit", Area 8: Here, go south and cross the river with a Water Spider to reach a Murasame Power +1 pickup. Then go back to the previous area.

"The Pit", Area 7: Cross the river at the point noted earlier. Go north on the other side and along the river until you reach the edge of the area. Instead of going there, go north and east along the path to a chest. Get the N-Sword Power +1 pikcup from within, then continue east and south to the next area.

"The Pit", Area 8: Go south to the statue and step on it.

"The Pit", Area 9 - BOSS AREA: Step on the opposite statue to find a boss: a familiar one, too. It should be pretty easy, though, as a result. Using the Murasame with all of the power-ups thus far, it shouldn't take more than five hits to bring it down, and you'll have plenty of time to get those in when it slows down in the center of the area. =P When you're done, though, it will seem like the boss doesn't have the scroll! Use the other statue.

"The Pit", Area 10: Here, open the chests for a Max HP +2 pickup and an Overall Power +1 pickup, then use the statue again. You will be in what I named Area 2, so you're not far from the entrance: go west an area to Area 1, then go west from the northwest room there and along the path back outside.

Iga Village Tunnel System: Speak with Goro outside and he will be surprised that you beat the beast. He will then confess by saying "I have Wind Scroll". ... ... Anyhow. He will give you the Wind Scroll.

Returning to Kondo's Daughter

Iga Village: Once you return to the village, you need to make your way back northeast from there to the overworld.

Overworld: Go south, east, and north into the clearing, then go northeast and cross the river with a Water Spider. Go north and west from there and cross with another Water Spider and continue into the next area. There, go onto the island, northeast across it, then northwest to the next area. Once there, go across the bridge to the north, another to the northwest, then go north to the next area, then north another two.

You'll now be at the crossroads area southwest of Geko. Go west an area and along the easy-to-navigate (and remember) path to Omi Village. At the area just outside (you'll cross a bridge and see a grave, remember?), go west into Kondo's daughter's house. Hand each Scroll to her (speak with her twice), then leave and re-enter the house. For now, you will be given the secret of the Wind Scroll, which claims a well to be in Geko Castle that leads to a cave. Hmm...

The Wind Scroll's Secret

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Murasame Power +1 [_] N-Star Power +1 [_] Dagger Power +1 [_] Dagger Power +1 [_] Overall Power +1
[_] Unlimited Water Spiders [_] Murasame Power +1

Overworld: When you returned the three scrolls to Kondo's daughter, the first she opened - the Wind Scroll - revealed that one of the wells in Geko leads to some underground cavern. For now, let's go there. You've traveled the path enough times to be able to get there yourself, so do so.

^sr8|

Geko Castle: When you arrive coming from Omi (the southwest side), go east an area. Speak and save/heal with the girl here, then go east and north a while to the end of the path. It will loop back to the southeast area of the castle surroundings, and you'll be near a well, as pictured to the right. Press A whilst facing it to go to the cavern below.

^sl9|

Geko Cave, Area 1: Be absolutely sure to note where the exit in this cave is, should you ever need to make a speedy retreat. You will arrive standing on that tile (the one pointed out in the screenshot to the left), but it will appear as some stalagmites on the ground. Anyhow... When you arrive, simply use a Water Spider on the river crossing to the far south (south of the "T" intersection, not north!), then go east to the next area.

Geko Cave, Area 2: This will be a hard area to navigate if you aren't quick: quickly head south, to the edge of the room, so that you can avoid the flying swords. For the most part thereafter, so long as you don't travel too far to the north, they won't hurt you. If you hug along the wall, you will notice, to the west, some river crossings. The first - going right through the flying swords o_o; - leads to a chest, which contains a Murasame Power +1 pickup. The second crossing will let you go west and north to the next area.

Geko Cave, Area 3: Go to the far north and east along the river near the entrance. Cross the rivers twice there with two Water Spiders and continue east to the next area.

Geko Cave, Area 4: Beware of flying swords! Anyhow, go east and cross the river using a Water Spider to get an N-Star Power +1 pickup. Then go south from the main path and along to the next area via the southeast corner.

^l10|Sorry about how it doesn't look *exactly* like the game. Emulator problems. >_>

Geko Cave, Area 5: Go to the south first. Follow the map above here to find out how to move through those spikes so that you can reach the chest containing a Dagger Power +1 pickup, then go southeast from the entrance to the next area.

Geko Cave, Area 6: Go north for a bit, dealing with the enemies on the way. (They're the main threat in this area.) Once you pass by the second 2x2 group of stalagmites, go east to the next area.

Geko Cave, Area 7: Go east for a bit to that protrusion coming from the north wall. Here, go south and west and weave your way through the spikes to the southwest corner. Go east from there to find a chest; another Dagger Power +1 pickup is within. Return to that protrusion named earlier and go west and north of it. As in the nearby screenshot (which shows the path to move along), you will notice it goes to the next area. Use the nearby screenshot as your guide to get through those spikes to another area.

Geko Cave, Area 8: Here, go northwest and use a Water Spider to reach the chest; it contains an Overall Power +1 pickup. Go north from there to the body of water, then east and through the spikes. You will then see a place where you can cross the river; use a Water Spider to do so, then again not much further to the east. Go north and west along the path (the northernmost spikes are fake) and use the stairs.

Ninja Master's House: Uh ... holy crap. Go due south and you will be able to speak with the ninja master, who will express his shock at you finding the secret passage - you, sir, have ninja'd him, and as a reward will gain an Infinite Water Spider supply!! ^_^

Geko Cave, Area 7: Backtrack into the cave (just go north) and then back through the area there and to the backwards-"L"-wall area. Go east to the next area.

Geko Cave, Area 9: Go southeast from here and use a Water Spider to cross onto the small island there for a chest containing a Murasame Power +1 pickup. Go back across the Spider and north and east to the next area.

^sr12|

Geko Cave, Area 10: Head to the southeastern portion of this map now. (Just hug the west and south walls.) When you reach the area like in the nearby screenshot, follow the marked path to the small alcove and press A or B within; "?" should appear on-screen after it flashes. The purpose of this is currently unknown, but done it anyways. When done, backtrack outside of the cave.

The Earth Scroll's Secret

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] N-Star Power +1 [_] Max HP +2 [_] Dagger Power +1 [_] Dagger Power +1 [_] Murasame Power +1
[_] N-Star Power +1 [_] Max HP +2

Overworld: Once you're done in Geko, return to find Kondo's daughter and speak with her again and she will tell you the secret contained within the Earth Scroll: "Check the east wall of the deepest cave." Return to Geko Castle, enter the cave, and do that. Yes, you must backtrack. Get over it. =/ The "check the east wall" part is the flashy part mentioned in Area 10 in the previous section's walkthrough. Suddenly, you'll pop outside!

Yama Province, Area 1: Go south and along the path there. Soon after beating the second samurai, you'll find yourself at a "T" intersection. Go south and grab the chest for an N-Star Power +1 pickup. Backtrack to that "T" intersection and go east an area.

Yama Province, Area 2: Follow the path to the next area, but beware the flying swords!

Yama Province, Areas 3-6: Simply follow the path for a while: there's nothing special along it, other than enemies you know how to deal with by now.

Yama Province, Area 7: Here, go along the path to the "T"-shaped fork. Go north and along the path to the previous area to find a Max HP +2 pickup! Return now to that "T" junction I mentioned earlier and head east and through the door to a town.

Yama Village: Nothing much to do but save and go north to the next area.

Yama Cliffs, Area 1: Go north and east towards the bridge over the abyss, while weaving through rocks and slaying enemies. When you reach it, cross the bridge and head into the next area.

Yama Cliffs, Area 2: Go north an area.

Yama Cliffs, Areas 3/4: Go northeast and east an area, then north and west back here. Walk through the rock in front of you to reach a chest with a Dagger Power +1 pickup within. Backtrack to Area 2.

Yama Cliffs, Area 2: Go across the bridge nearby, then east and north. When you see the (well, odd-looking) bridge, go north from there first. As you near the chest, note that the western rock is fake; in any case, open the chest to get a Dagger Power +1 pickup, then cross the aforementioned bridge.

Yama Cliffs, Areas 5/6: Go north an area, then east another.

Yama Cliffs, Area 7: Head to the northeast portion of the map, where the bridge is. There, you should several rocks to the east of it: three in a row, then three in a row, then a lone one below the middle of the second row. Walk east through it to a chest containing a Murasame Power +1 pickup. Cross the bridge nearby and go north an area.

Yama Cliffs, Areas 8-10: Go north an area, then go northwest another two.

Yama Cliffs, Area 11: Go to the southwest here. When you reach the area near the southwest corner where there are a line of diagonal rocks blocking a bridge, the third of those rocks can be walked through to get you to the other side. Go north and through the first rock to reach a chest, which will contain an N-Star Power +1 pickup. Go west an area.

Yama Cliffs, Area 12: Go west and along the path to the dead-end; there, you can go through the northern rock to continue. Continue west to the northwest corner, then go south to find a chest containing a Max HP +2 pickup. That's all the use this area will serve us, so return to Yama.

Yama Village: Save and leave the village heading west. ... Honestly, if you prefer to not waste time doing something for no benefit, head onto the next main section of the walkthrough and return to Kondo's daughter's place. I'm covering the rest simply because it's there.

Yama Province, Areas 7-11: Go northwest to the next area and, there, go around the border of the area counterclockwise to the next. Then go south and west to the next area beyond there. There, go west and you will find a cliff to use a ladder at. Do so and go north to descend from the cliff, then along the path to the next area. In the next area, you won't be able to reach that chest, so just go west-northwest to the statue.

Yama Province, Area 12 - BOSS AREA: Step on the west statue to trigger a boss. This boss, as with the last time you fought it (before coming from the other side) cannot be beaten, so you'll die in this fight and return to the last place you saved.

The Kidnapping

Sectional Flowchart

Dealing with Ogre Castle

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Offering [_] N-Star Power +1 [_] Max HP +2 [_] Offering

Overworld: Whenever you next end up returning to Kondo's daughter's house, she will appear to have been kidnapped by an ogre. The person left behind will claim that she said to use "the offering" at the middle of the three graves at the east end of Yama. The person here will then hand you an Offering. (For whatever reason, this is not the offering you need. Don't worry about this too heavily for the moment.) Now, you need to backtrack to the village of Yama. From prior experience and the previous two sub-sections, you should be able to do that ably.

Yama Village: Leave town to the north.

Yama Cliffs: Backtrack along the path we traveled before. Now, in the area where you found the first Dagger Power +1 pickup last time (Area 4, going to Area 3), go east in Area 4 and north in the stone field to the castle.

Ogre Castle, Area 1: Go east an area.

Ogre Castle, Area 2: Here, go east and north. Where the spiky-looking things meet the gravestones to the east of the chest, you can go north and through the dead-end. Head north, east, north, and west along the path towards the previous area. (Use the northern, narrower path.)

Ogre Castle, Area 1: Go west and upstairs.

Ogre Castle, Area 3: Go to the far south and far east to the next area.

Ogre Castle, Area 4: Here, go to the east and you will find some hills blocking your path forward to the chest. See how three are arranged in a kind of "L"-shape? At the top-right point of it, you can walk through and north to the chest, which contains an N-Star Power +1 pickup. Go back to the previous area.

Ogre Castle, Area 3: Head west and north, back to the entrance, then go east. When you see the skeleton on the ground, stand on it and go south through the wall, then east to the next area, where you can use some stairs.

Ogre Castle, Areas 5-6: Nothing much here. Go east to the outer wall, then north and west to Area 6. There, continue along the path to the very end. At the end, walk north through the wall to the statue.

Ogre Castle, Area 7 - BOSS AREA: Step on the opposite statue to begin the boss battle against the ogre. ... Honestly, this battle should be pretty easy; just come in at full health. Whenever the ogre appears (he will summon orbs to attack you), just step over to him and slash him repeatedly with your weapon. You'll probably take damage from the attack, but you won't take enough to make it a concern if you have full health. About three or four of these instances (he flashes in, you strike him a bunch) should be enough to kill him.

Ogre Castle, Area 8: The lone chest in this next area contains a Max HP +2 pickup. Grab it and use the statue again to return to Area 7. Now just back out of the castle. You won't find any enemies on the way, either, so if they were the main reason you didn't grab that N-Star powerup earlier, you're free to do it now! Then backtrack in the overworld to Yama.

Yama Village: Speak with the woman in the northwest corner of the village to receive an Offering, one of a different variety than you got from Kondo's daughter, and the proper one we need. (Don't ask. Probably a shoddy patch Jaleco tried to deal with in the game, since the original offering was registered as a key item, which is unusable by the player. But whatever.)

There are now a ton of items we can get because of this Offering - you can see this section for that, or you can continue on with the plot in this section.

Offering Item Cleanup

[_] N-Sword Power +1 [_] Unlimited Ladders [_] N-Sword Power +1 [_] N-Sword Power +1

[_] Dagger Power +1 [_] Max HP +2 [_] Overall Power +1 [_] N-Sword Power +1
[_] Dagger Power +1

For the sake of ease on the part of everyone involved, I will assume we'll be starting back in the area near the unnamed village you first visited at the start of the game. Also note that you may need to grind for extended periods of time to get the amounts of Offerings necessary to get the items. (Just so you know, you owe a big thanks to Chris Baum for the details of this section - it was he who told me pretty much everything within this section!)

Overworld: First, we'll work in the area just to the east of the unnamed village. In the south-central part of that area near the river, you should a statue that looks kind of like a mushroom. Use the Offering while facing it to create a bridge across the river. There, you can beat an enemy that creates a ton of heart-shaped pickups, moreso than most other enemies, when dropped.

Next, get southwest of Geko to the crossroads at the bottom of the cliffs there. Go west two areas. When you arrive in the destination area, you should be near a river; follow it north to a mushroom statue and use an Offering on it. This will let you cross the nearby river for an N-Sword Power +1 pickup.

Continue along to the area where Omi Village is. In that area, go west one more area to the house of Kondo's daughter. Speak with her inside to get an infinite supply of ladders!!! =D

Next, go through Omi Village to the forest south of there. Go west an area to the lakefront, then go south an area to the southern half of the lake. Get to the south-central portino of the area and you'll see a tree in a clearing you cannot seem to reach. However, on the vertical row of trees just to the right of it, you can walk south and into the clearing. Inside is a N-Sword Power +1 pickup.

Now, go back to the crossroads area southwest of Geko and to the southwest corner there. You'll see two southbound paths. Follow the eastern of the two into the next area, then continue following it further along to a mushroom statue in the next area. There, use an Offering on the statue to open a path to the nearby chest, which also contains a N-Sword Power +1 pickup.

Iga Tunnels Dungeon: Next, head further along in the overworld to Iga. There, continue outside of the village as before into the dungeon proper. When inside (the area where you seem to start inside the wall itself), go south an area. Go through the east wall as before and go along the path to the hole at the end of it. Go east to the next area when you land, then use the northwestern exit of this screen, which will take you back through the previous area to another one. There, you should find a mushroom statue at the north side of the clearing. Now, get in the northeast corner of this room and walk one Taro-width to the left, then go north through the wall: the chest will contain a N-Star Power +1 pickup.

Go back two areas, then, in this room again, use the west-central exit to go back to the area with the N-Star power-up. Use an Offering on this statue, then go back an area. Go far to the south, west, and north to the northwestern exit. Follow the path to the end, then walk through the wall to find a chest containing an N-Sword Power +1 pickup.

Yama Province: Next, you need to backtrack all of the way to Geko, then go through the well's dungeon again to reach Yama. Upon arrival, immediately go due east to the next area. To the southeast upon entering, you'll find a mushroom statue; use an Offering on it to reach the nearby chest, which contains a Murasame Power +1 pickup.

From here, go east another area to see that you are apparently blocked by hills. See the group of three that make a right-angle, like the top-right quarter of a square? The corner hill, as it were, is fake and can be walked through: go through, then north an area. Use an Offering at the nearby mushroom statue to warp just a little ways, but you can now grab the nearby chest, which contains an Overall Power +1 pickup.

Go west an area and you'll see another mushroom statue enclosed within a square of spiky things. Get just above the northeastern corner spike of that square, walk left one Taro-width, then go south through the spikes to the statue. Use an Offering on it to open a very convenient shortcut westward: you'll also be able to grab the contents of the chest in the southwest corner: a Dagger Power +1 pickup.

For now, though, just go north an area. (We'll assume you used the western of the two paths.) You'll quickly reach another mushroom statue if you head northeast; use an Offering on it to warp south across the spikes. There will now be two statues in front of you: the western one will just warp you back across, and the other refills your health in whole. Not much point, clearly, but you probably need it by now.

Go south to the previous area, then head west another. Climb the ledge here with a ladder, then go north and west to the other side, then into the next area. There, go west, north, and east to the northeast corner where a mushroom statue lies. Use an Offering on it and one of the rocks surrounding the chest in the southwest corner will disappear; now you can go to the chest for a Max HP +2 pickup!

Yama Cliffs: Go back to Yama Village, then north to the cliffs area. Go east an area, north one, and west one. Here, go west as if you were about to go north an area. Use an Offering on the mushroom statue there to complete the nearby bridge, which leads to a chest containing an Overall Power +1 pickup.

Go north two areas and eastward three more. There, in the southwest corner you'll find a mushroom statue; use an Offering on it to open up a path to the chest near the northeast corner, which contains an N-Sword Power +1 pickup.

Next, go south two areas, then use the southwestern exit there to go west an area, then go south an area. Go west an area, then go north to the next area. There, go east an area, then go north one more into Ogre Castle.

Ogre Castle: Here, go east to quickly find another mushroom statue: use an Offering on it to open a path to a chest in the next area. Go east an area, then go the north side as before (through the westernmost reachable spike). Head to the northwest corner, then go south and open the reachable chest for a Dagger Power +1 pickup.

That'll do it for now; we can pick up the rest of the Offering-needing items on the way.

Using the Offering

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Overall Power +1 [_] Murasame Power +1 [_] Dagger Power +1 [_] N-Star Power +1 [_] Murasame Power +1
[_] Overall Power +1 [_] Dagger Power +1 [_] N-Sword Power +1

Yama Village: After having beaten the ogre in Ogre Castle (thus returning Yama to Lord Shin), and receiving the offering from the northwestern woman in the village, leave the village.

^sr13|

Yama Province: You now need to backtrack through the overworld in Yama for a while, acting as if you want to return back to Geko. You will soon go through what we earlier dubbed Area 3. In the southeast corner of this area is a gravesite like that pictured to the right. At the middle grave, equip the Offering you received in Yama, face the grave, and press the button corresponding to that item.

Overworld, Area 1: Go east to the crossroads in the middle of this forest. Go due east from there to the next area.

Overworld, Area 2: Here, go east to another crossroads, this one going east and south. Go east (well, northeast) first to a point where you can cross the river. Use a Water Spider to do so and go east and south to the dead-end where you can find a chest; open it for an Overall Power +1 boost! Backtrack to the fork I noted earlier and go south to another; there, head northeast and cross the river there. Continue into the next area.

Overworld, Area 3: Go south and use a Water Spider to cross the river there, which will allow you to reach the Murasame Power +1 pickup in the chest. Now backtrack to Area 2 and use the southwesternmost exit to return to Area 3. Simply follow the path into the next area.

Overworld, Area 4: Follow the path to the southeast of where you begin for a while to some stairs.

Dungeon 1, Area 1: Go east to the next area. Do note, however, that there are three paths there; I want you to use the northeastern one of these.

Dungeon 1, Area 2: Go along the path and use a Water Spider to cross the river. At the end of the path on the other side, you will find a Dagger Power +1 pickup. Return to the previous area now and use one of the other two exits to return to Area 2, then simply follow the path to the next area.

Dungeon 1, Area 3: Follow the path here to a hole and fall into it.

Cavern, Area 1: Go southeast and along the path to the next area.

Cavern, Area 2: Head north, east, south, east, and northeast to find two more holes. Which you use is irrelevant, so just pick and go.

Cavern, Area 3: When you arrive, note that the spike you landed on will take you back up above. But, otherwise, just go south to the next area.

Cavern, Area 4: Here, head south, west, southeast, and south to find an island in the southwest corner. Use a Water Spider to cross over to it and get a N-Star Power +1 pickup. Then go east to the next area from there.

Cavern, Area 5: Don't overthink it. =P Just go north to the next area.

Cavern, Area 6: Here, go north and you will have two stalagmites blocking your path; walk through the northern one of them. Go north and west and along the path from there to find the end of the path. Use a Water Spider to cross onto the island with the chest with a Murasame Power +1 pickup within. Backtrack a little now so that the statue is in view. As you can tell, there are two stalagmites blocking your way from going north and east to it; the northwestern of these stalagmites is actually fake, so you can walk through it to the statue.

Cavern, Area 7 - BOSS AREA: Step on the opposite statue to begin a boss battle. All I saw was a winged boss flying around a little bit: it wasn't hard to stand just north of him and slice the crap out of him. With my 21-power Murasame, it took maybe a dozen or so hits, but it also only about ten seconds. >_> Anyhow. Onward.

Cavern, Area 8: Go north to find a chest, and open it for an Overall Power +1 pickup. Go southeast from there into a clearing, which you should exit to the southeast. Go north past the first fork in the hall, but west at the second so you can continue on to the next area.

Cavern, Area 9: As you traverse this area, be absolutely sure that you take note of the positions that the white flames are constantly switching through: they will hurt you if you touch them, but they have a regular pattern of four iterations before looping. In any case, the path here is pretty linear. Note that, as go along, you can use an Offering on the mushroom statue you find to shorten your journey greatly: you'll just need to walk off and on the tile you get on. Otherwise, at the end, you will be blocked by two stalagmites. Step on the north one to go to a new area, but quickly come back and immediately head east so you can open the chest for a Dagger Power +1 pickup. Then go down.

Dungeon 2, Areas 1-2: Go east and along to the end of the path (which is in the next area) to find an N-Sword Power +1 pickup way at the end there. Then backtrack to the dungeon entrance and go west and south. Go south at the first fork and along the path into the next area, where you will encounter some stairs. Use 'em.

Overworld: Here, simply go west to the next area, and in the next you can head southwest to find a village.

Kai Village: There's not much point to being here. You can save with the girl you meet as you enter the village. One person will note that the kidnapped girl lies hidden in a cave to the northeast as well. In any case, save and return to the overworld.

Overworld: Backtrack to where you entered this portion of the overworld. Just to the northeast of there is a place where you can use a ladder to climb onto the ledges above, then another spot further to the east. This will allow you to reach a chest containing a Dagger Power +1 pickup. Return to ground level and go north, 'round the cliff, to the next area.

Here, go west an area, then go a bit west and far to the north in the next. If you use an Offering on the nearby mushroom statue, it will open a path to the treasure on the western cliff. Go to the southwest corner of the previous area to use a Ladder to get on that cliff, then go north to the next area. You'll be able to reach the N-Sword Power +1 pickup. Now backtrack to the area near the mushroom statue.

^sr14|

Look at the nearby screenshot, next: it shows you the hidden path to Area 5: just walk west, then north from the dead-end! Once in Area 5, go northwest to the place where the withering trees meet the spiky things: you can walk across that one-tile-thin band, so do so. In Area 6, go north to the mushroom-man thingy. Get on the south side of him and walk west and north through the trees. (If you use an Offering on him, you can beat an ogre almost assuredly yielding a Potion.) Then get on his north side, go north through the spikes. Use an Offering on the other mushroom statue to be able to reach the cliff to the west; use a ladder to get at the N-Sword Power +1 pickup.

If you go north an area from here, you can quickly come upon three mushroom statues to use offerings on: the first warps you back to Geko, the second refills your health, and the third gives you a hint that's pointless with this walkthrough. Otherwise, go east an area from the chest.

Here, go to the far east and onto the cliff, then go southwest to the next area. There, you can head southeast to find a cliff; use a ladder to get up to the chest, which contains an Overall Power +1 upgrade. Return to Area 7 and go west and south onto the cliff there. Go west an area, south one, east one, south one, and east one. In this area, go north and onto the cliff via a ladder, then go west and north an area to a chest, which contains a Murasame Power +1 pickup. Return to the area where you use the ladder, hit ground level, and go north an area, then another.

When you arrive in this area, go west and south along the narrower, eastern path to the previous area. Follow the path to the cliff with the chest on it; use a ladder to get up there and thusly grab a Max HP +2 pickup. Backtrack around now until you can go east of this area. Go north and west an area, then go along the path...

  • (If you want get this quest over with...) ... until you can get on ground level. Do so and go east an area. There, you need to go east a bit and, at the northeasternmost available point, walk north through the spikes to the next area to get a Murasame Power +1 pickup. Return back an area, then, at the spot pictured, go east through the spikes and north to the cave. (For the walkthrough, skip beyond the Shin's Castle stuff.)

  • (If you want some treasure...) ... until you see the narrow northbound path. Use it to reach Shin's Castle. Note that, while it's not possible to complete, there are some treasures here you may want.

Shin's Castle Exterior, Areas 1-3: When you arrive, go to the first intersection, due east through the wall, and into the next area. Go west an area and follow the linear path for a bit until you're faced with two southbound paths. Use the western one and continue along the path to some stairs.

Castle Dungeon, Areas 1-3: Go east and into the hall when you arrive, then head south and west when first possible. Continue along the path into the third area, where you'll find some stairs at the end of the path. Ascend them, then immediately come back so you can head west and open the chest to obtain a Dagger Power +1 pickup. Now use the stairs.

Shin's Castle Exterior, Areas 4-5: Here, go east and use a Water Spider to cross the river, then do so again further along the path. At the north/west fork, go west and along the path into the next area. There, cross the river with a Water Spider and you will be next to a room with a chest inside. You can get north of the northeast corner there and go south through the wall to the chest for an N-Star Power +1 pickup. Get outside of the room, then go west and north to the next area.

Shin's Castle Exterior, Areas 6-7: Here, simply go east along the southern shoreline to the next area. There, you will find a bridge further along to the east; cross it, heading north to the next area. There, go east and north and west to the stairs. Use them.

Shin's Castle Interior, Areas 1-2: Go north and along to the north/west fork when you arrive. Go west and along the path from there into the next area. There, take a look at how everything is kinda tiled. Next, see that long room to the south? Use the eastern of the two northernmost wall tiles to go through there. Then go due south through another wall, and due west through two more. Go through the north-center tile next, the bottom-east tile, the north-center one, the bottom-west one, and the south-center one to reach a room with a chest. Open it for an Overall Power +1 thingy. Go back to the previous enclosure and use the north-center tile there to head to the next area.

Shin's Castle Interior, Areas 3-4: Basically go due east into Area 4. If you look, you'll notice that the center enclosure here has two "dimples" on its south side; use the west tile of the east dimple to get into there, then go through the north tile of the central wall to reach the chest, which contains an N-Sword Power +1 pickup. Return outside the enclosure and go east, north, and west to Area 3. At the end of the path is a statue.

Shin's Castle Interior, Area 5 - BOSS AREA: Go northwest and you will find a boss. For now, you can't beat it, so just lose and backtrack in the overworld to where you were supposed to enter the cave.

Ogre's Cave: You see where the room to the south kinda "reaches up" to try to touch the room you're in? Go through the wall there, then along the path to find Kondo's daughter and the ninja master!

The Final Clash!

TREASURES CHECKLIST
[_] Max HP +2 [_] Sorrow Crysta; [_] Dagger Power +1 [_] N-Star Power +1 [_] Dagger Power +1
[_] Overall Power +1 [_] N-Sword Power +1

Overworld: After speaking with the ninja master and Kondo's daughter, who will tell you that the Ancient Sorrow Crystal that the fake Shin used is hid in a mountain on the side of Kai, we need to leave the cave. Go south of there and along the path to a south/west fork. Go west and along into the next area. Go south until a path to the east opens up that heads south; go along it it until you reach a cave.

Cave: Here, go south, west, north, west, south, east, north, and west to find a chest. Open it for a Max HP +2 upgrade, then backtrack to where you entered the cave and use the northwestern spikes to return to the overworld.

Overworld: Backtrack to the open area, then hug the mountain to the west as you head south. In the next area, continue far to the south, then go east and into the cave there.

Cave: Go along the path west, south, and east. At the north/east fork, go due north and onto the spikes there to return to the overworld.

Overworld: Go south and into the cave there.

Cave: The second you step into the cave, go west and along the path and into the wall. Follow the path designated in the nearby screenshot (walk onto the next room's wall, go east, then south into the room). When you get into the next hall, go far to the east and north and press A at the end to find the Sorrow Crystal!!

Overworld: Our next goal is Shin's Castle. We already explored that area as an optional extension of the previous section, but it's a long bit to scroll through so I'll repaste it here. From where you found Kondo's daughter (speaking of which, saving there is a good idea), go back towards the cliffs to the west and a long, narrow northbound path will appear. You can follow it to Shin's Castle.

Castle Dungeon, Areas 1-3: Go east and into the hall when you arrive, then head south and west when first possible. (Note: The northernmost path has a statue that'll fully heal you for an Offering, and the southernmost path has a statue that, if you tell it you don't want to go to Kai, then you will go to Kai. =/) Continue along the path into the third area, where you'll find some stairs at the end of the path. Ascend them, then immediately come back so you can head west and open the chest to obtain a Dagger Power +1 pickup. Now use the stairs.

Shin's Castle Exterior, Areas 6-7: Here, first go north along the nearby river to the trees. Go as far west as possible, then north and east and north through the trees to a mushroom statue; use an Offering on it to be able to reach the nearby treasure chest, which contains a Dagger Power +1 pickup. Go south through the easternmost accessible tree, then backtrack to the area's entrance (need a Water Spider) and go east simply go east along the southern shoreline to the next area. There, you will find a bridge further along to the east; cross it, heading north to the next area. There, go east and north and west to the stairs. Use them.

Return outside the enclosure and go east, north, and west to Area 3. At the end of the path is a statue.

Shin's Castle Interior, Area 5 - FINAL BOSS AREA: Go northwest and you will find a boss, the fake Shin we already know about - speak with him to begin. His strategy will mostly revolve around spawning some eyeballs to shoot at you. Due to your lack of speed, they'll be pretty much impossible to dodge. I would recommend equipping the Murasame and getting on the south side of the third tile on the northern portion of the floor (just between the fake Shin and the eyeball). This way, you can attack both of those things (due to the Murasame's wide range) and avoid the fake Shin's next move. After the eyeballs disperse, the fake Shin will move from the center to either of the northwest or northeast corners, mostly sweeping to try to hurt you. So long as you stay on that third tile, you should be fine, just stab him as he comes by. That's about it; the eyeballs will be the main threat here, so be ready to heal, but otherwise you shouldn't see much more than a single loop of this strategy.

The second part will then soon begin. In it, the fake Shin doesn't use much of an actual strategy. Mostly, he'll just sling eyeballs around that fire at you. All I had to do was to simply rush up to the ... face, I guess ... and mash the crap out of the B Button, healing as necessary. (I took enough damage to need to use two Potions; you ought to have more than that, hopefully. Being still actually made it easy for more of the enemies' shots to miss me!)

The End: After the battle, you'll be in a mist-filled area. Take a few steps and, after the Sorrow Crystal is destroyed, you'll be back in the Ogre's Cave. Go along to the ninja master and Kondo's daughter. Speak with the former and you can return to Geko Castle. There, speak with Nobu and the game will, at long last, come to an end! Congratulations!

Player Stat Growth

The player's stats are not influenced by defeating enemies and earning experience as in other RPGs. Rather, this follows a system more akin to that presented in games like The Illusion of Gaia/Time or Paper Mario: Sticker Star - you will find pickups in the field (primarily in treasure chests) that augment your stats. These stats can affect your HP, your overall damage output, or that of a single weapon. So, then, the purpose of this section is pretty simple, no? Here, we simply will discuss the minimum and maximum known possible stats and the number of upgrades for such; all their locations should be in the Walkthrough.

Statistic Start Upgrades Maximum
Maximum HP 4 13 (each +2) 30
Overall Power 0 14 (each +1) 12
N-Sword Power 1 14 (each +1) 15 + 14 (29) ;Value with upgrades + Overall Power, sum in (##)
N-Stars Power 1 14 (each +1) 15 + 14 (29) ;Value with upgrades + Overall Power, sum in (##)
Murasame Power 1 14 (each +1) 15 + 14 (29) ;Value with upgrades + Overall Power, sum in (##)
Dagger Power 1 14 (each +1) 15 + 14 (29) ;Value with upgrades + Overall Power, sum in (##)
