Introduction

Welcome to my latest GB FAQ, and my first in a fair while. This FAQ is to cover the RPG known as Kininkou Maroku Oni. Kininkou Maroku Oni ... how to describe it... Simply describing the game would be more than a bit difficult: it is itself the essence of the an RPG, it has all of the core characteristics of an RPG, but at the same time it doesn't really bother to excel with those qualities: or, if there was such an attempt, it didn't go off too well. Perhaps in the GB era it's a moderately decent piece of work, drawn to the back of the shelves because of its Japan-only nature and it's relative inferiority to more popular games like Pokemon. Still ... agh, let's ignore the crappy descriptions and get ON with it!

It's been over twenty years since this game's launch in 1990 by Banpresto. And since then, not a single FAQ has been written for it. Well, there's always a first time for everything, no? Ever since the start of the GB FAQ Completion Project on GameFAQs several years ago - a project designed to get a guide out for every single GB game out there - many people have now been helped because older, rarer, less popular games have gotten guides.

And so, that is how I came upon this game. Thanks for listening to my ramblin'; hope you enjoy!

Basics of the Game

Game Controls

Button Effects
D-Pad Move around; move menu cursors. In the field, press one of these buttons to face and speak with people.
A Button Open the action menu in the field. In menus in general, you can confirm choices.
B Button Exit menus.
Start Button None.
Select Button None.

Field Interfacing

Kininkou Maruko Oni, in the field in particular, plays like pretty much any RPG you can imagine. Walking around on the field is a grid-based affair, you being able to move one tile at a time per press of a D-Pad Button. You can also speak with people by running into them, and go through doors and the like in much the same fashion. Overall, it's pretty simple to deal with the field. In any case, when in the field, pressing A brings up a menu with several options within.

  • Status: Here, you'll be able to see your character's statistics, most of them anyhow.
    • Level: Top-left. It's a general indicator of one's power.
    • Speed: Top-right. This determines turn order, like Agility in most other RPGs.
    • HP: Second row, listed in the order of [Current HP] / [Max HP]. This determines your health: when it hits zero, you die!
    • SP: Third row, in the same format as HP. SP is mostly used for skills, kinda like MP for magic in other RPGs.
    • Alter: Fourth row, allows Tenchimaru to transform to and from his Oni form.
    • Money: Fifth row. Money is in units of Ryo, and ... well, you buy stuff with it.
    • Next Level: Final row. This is about the EXP. you need to reach the next level.

  • Equip: Here, you'll be able to see your character's current equipment, their Attack (first row), and Defense (second row). Attack determines the power of your attacks, and Defense determines how much damage you take from attacks. Logically, it's best to have high values in both whenever possible. You do not change equipment from this screen: go to the Items screen for that. However, you can press "A" here to take off equipment. You can equip up to five pieces of equipment, one per type: weapon, head armor, body armor, arm armor, and leg armor.

  • Item: View items currently in your possession, and use them if necessary.

  • Skill: View current skills and those you can use. There are two subsets of this menu: Recovery skills and Flight skills. They specialize in the obvious contexts: recovery and getting away from stuff.

  • Alter: This command will let Tenchimaru become an Oni. This has benefits to it.

  • Special: Use certain Special Skills exclusive for Tenchimaru's Oni form.

Battle Interfacing

Playing battles in this game is also very similar to most RPGs, and particularly Dragon Quest/Dragon Warrior from the NES as this game uses one-on-one battles. At the left side of the screen is the enemy sprite, whereas that to the right is that of Tenchimaru, your character. In the lower-left, you can also find your current statistics for HP, SP, and Alter. There are several commands you can choose from in the bottom-right, too:

  • Fight: Attack the enemy outright. No real cost, and attack strength is determinant on your Attack stat.
  • Skill: Use one of the many skills you can have. In this case, you'll be able to use Fire, Shuriken, Recovery, Nature, and Special Skills. This can only be used by the human Tenchimaru.
  • Item: Use an item, if one is available to you.
  • Alter: This command will let Tenchimaru become an Oni. This has benefits to it.
  • Run: Attempt to flee battle.
  • Special: Use certain Special Skills exclusive for Tenchimaru's Oni form.

The ultimate goal of battle is to reduce your foe's HP to zero. (However, I cannot actually seem to accurately determine HP: it seems Banpresto went ahead and tried masking or reorganizing the HP data in some confusing method such that RAM analysis will not work for finding enemy stats.) Once your foe's HP hits zero, the battle is won and you'll get EXP., Ryo, and items (rarely) for winning. EXP. in particular is worth note: if you get enough EXP., you'll level-up, which in turn strengthens you!

Of course, there's the other problem with battling: if you fall in battle (that is, your HP hits zero), you'll die. This will return you to the last inn you saved at. Inns function as save points in this game, so in reality the game just loads the last save point, which also means you'll lose all progress you made between the inn and the point of game over, so be sure to keep your HP high.

Game Start-Up & Prologue Translation

At the title screen, there will be two options: "Start" on the left, and "Continue" on the right. Obviously, since this game uses a save function, if you need to restart gameplay, it would be best to use the latter, though you probably already know that. =P In any case, if that's where you need to begin to get help on this, you're in the wrong section: choose the left option to begin anew. The prologue text will then scroll by:

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

"There is a legend passed down about a young man who was cursed with the ability to turn into an Oni Deva. Always lurking within, he would devote his life to fighting evil. This is the origin of a man destined to become a legend.

From here, you will be able to choose your character's name. Note that your name by default will be appended with "-maru": for example, if you choose the name "Kaze", your name will be "Kazemaru". If you decide to begin gameplay without choosing a particular name for yourself, then you will use the default name Tenchimaru.

Shuriken 100 Ryo Damages the foe. Usually around 75 damage.
Caltrop 50 Ryo Damages the foe. Usually around 30 damage.

When you gain control of your character, begin by speaking with the man to the north, Saizo Hiryuu. After some light taunting from him - apparently, Tenchimaru is a bit of a troublemaker! - you will be told to take the Report given to you to Master Eirinsai. Leave the house to the main village. If you go to the right and north, you can enter Eirinsai's house. Speak with the man out front and you'll be able to enter. Within, go west and speak with Eirinsai. He'll take the Report and give you an Epistle: you need to bring it to the elder of Kamiake Village, which is to the east.

While we're in your home village - no one ever mentions it being Kakure Village, interestingly - you should go into the northeastern house. There, you'll find a shop where you can buy quite a bit of equipment! Note that you start with 100 Ryo, a Copper Katana, and some Clothes, and those are not surpassed in their own class except for the exorbitantly expensive (at this time) Iron Katana. The Large Leggings, if you're going for equipment, may be what you have to tolerate for the moment unless you feel like grinding in the overworld later on.

In the southeastern corner of town is the inn. The inn functions much like the ones in other RPGs: that is, you fully regain your HP, SP, and Alter here for a price of 10 Ryo, which is pretty nice! ^_^ You can also save here, but that's free.

That's basically it for now. Leave town when ready.

First Trip in the Overworld

Enemy Name Max HP EXP. Yield Ryo Yield Known Item Drops
Hitotsume-kozo 50 2 EXP. 6 Ryo Herb
Mamedanuki 50 3 EXP. 7 Ryo None
Spirit 50 1 EXP. 2 Ryo None

When you enter the overworld, take note that you will encounter enemies at random as you go along. They will appear in 1-on-1 battles against you. I would recommend grinding against them for now until you hit Level 2 or Level 3. This is not only for the reason of getting some decent EXP. - enemies tend to get you pretty quickly in this game - but it would also be nice to grab a bunch of equipment, y'know. The other main benefits would be the ability to learn the Recovery Skill Spring at Level 2, since you really need to get a method of healing; the Herbs dropped by the Hitotsume-kozo enemies help with that, too.

In any case, when you're ready, head to the southeast of your home village towards Kamiake Village: unlike your home, this one will be more easily seen on the world map. -_-; On the way, you will meet up with a Junior Ninja who will take the Epistle away from you; this is to be expected, just continue on into Kamiake anyways.

When you arrive, if you need to, you should heal up in the inn to the southwest, though why you'd need to after one or two battles is beyond me. =/ In any case, it's only 11 Ryo, so it's not like it would be insane to really bother to go back home for the cheaper one. The items shop is just to its north. You'll probably want to stock up on the Herbs there, since they're cheap and very useful. You may want to buy just one Antidote, too, since we'll encounter Poison Frogs soon enough, which are capable of poisoning you.

^sr1|

This aside, head to the north-central part of the village and into the large building there. Go to the west and speak with the Elder to talk about the theft of the Epistle. He will just recommend returning home for now, so do so. Home, as you'll recall, is to the northwest of Kamiake. It can be hard to find, though: it's a small clearing in the forest, near the shoreline. Use the screenshot to the right if you need further aid.

Kakure Village: When you return to your hometown, you'll find the place oddly deserted. Go into the northern house where the elder lives; you'll find him lying on the floor to the west! When you speak with him, he'll tell you that the village was attacked by the Yokai, a clan of monsters that came to the world ages ago, and live now only to eliminate the human race. Eirinsai then goes on about where you truly came from: you were born not in this village, but brought here as an orphaned baby by a stranger. You were also given a special stone, hidden inside the southern cave. To open the door to the other side of the mountain, you will need to set the Lithograph given to you onto a wall in the cave.

Eirinsai will then pass on after this final task, leaving the last of your hometown. Return to the overworld, healing in the inn if you need to.

Overworld: Head southwest now from your hometown: if you have anything to purchase in Kamiake, now would be the time to grab it. Anyhow, once head southwest from home, you'll soon run into some mountains. Go southward along them, then hug them going eastward when you can't go south anymore. If you continue just hugging them, you'll eventually find the entrance to a cavern. Go on inside.

Southern Cave - 1F: When you enter the cave, begin by going to the far south for a while. As you go, you'll find that the path southward takes you to a dead-end if you keep going. Go to the intersection just before this dead-end and head east from it, then east and south at the next ones. You'll soon find a two-way intersection. Go west and along the path and downstairs.

^sr2|

Southern Cave - B1F: When you arrive here, go far to the east and then to the north to reach a four-way intersection. Go east from it, then north when the path in that direction is next available. At the next fork, continue north, then north at the next one as well. Follow the linear path for a while and you will arrive at a wall like that pictured to the right: you'll notice that it looks slightly different from the other walls (with that kind of "cartoon" effect where animated objects are more apparent) and, when facing it, you will be told that a strange indentation is on the wall. Face it and use the Lithograph to get rid of the wall. Then head west and approach the Spirit Stone: you'll then obtain it. Use the stairs that appear to continue on.

Southern Cave - 1F: Go along the linear path to the overworld.

When back in the overworld, it's a quick journey westward to the next area: just follow the shoreline and you'll find a village at the base of some hills.

When you get into the village, first go to the far west to the village's southwest corner; there, you will be able to use the inn, which costs 12 Ryo this time. There is also a shop in the northeastern portion of town that sells the above stocks; nothing much, to be honest, but at least there are Herbs. (I mean, heck, in The Illusion of Gaia you could only get 12 per playthrough at most.) Spider Webs can be useful, too; I'd buy one or two if you've been having trouble with enemies up to this point.

Other than these minor things, there's not much point to being in Kamiya. If you speak with some of the townspeople, you'll learn that there is a man with a stone akin to your Spirit Stone in the town of Chiharo, which is to the west. It's a very quick trip that way, so just go.

Chihiro Village

If you really need to use the inn here, it's a bit to the east of the town entrance and costs 13 Ryo ... though how you could've gotten hurt that bad between here and Kamiya is beyond me. >_> Saving is nonetheless prudent, though. There's also an item shop in the southwestern portion of town, a mimickry of the one back in Kamiya, so no real point in bothering.

If you go into the northwestern house, you'll learn that a man with a stone like your Spirit Stone lives outside the village. As you leave the house, you'll suddenly be encroached upon by Ibaraki! He'll demand your Spirit Stone, a demand which you'll refuse, which begins the battle. Don't do much of anything but just attack; you're supposed to lose this, and will the moment Ibaraki strikes. You'll reawaken after the battle inside the man's house that you left. You can retake control of Tenchimaru the moment he stops talking, and it doesn't seem Ibaraki actually took anything of yours, not even the Spirit Stone. You will be very low on health, however, so it's best to stop by the inn. That done, time to return to the overworld and do ... I dunno. Stuff. Yeah, stuff. That works.

Poison Frog 75 5 EXP. 8 Ryo Antidote
Spirit 50 1 EXP. 2 Ryo None

When you return to the overworld, there's not much to do. First begin by grinding for a little bit: before the next dungeon, I would recommend being Level 6~8, so grind for a while in the overworld. It may be a good idea, too, to backtrack to your hometown to get the Iron Katana once you've earned enough Ryo, as well.

When you're ready, begin by going east of Chihiro for a bit, maybe 6~8 steps, then head due north from there. You'll proceed into the small hills there. You should be able to see one that looks like it is studded with jewels. This is Ishiuichi Mountain: time for you to start climbing.

In all honesty, much of this dungeon is about going up bunches of stairs, fighting rather difficult enemies on the way. This much is manageable enough: even though there are quite a few staircases, for the most part they'll all converge to the same spot at the end, a place where five staircases go from the same ledge as pictured to the right. From there, you'll want to use the westernmost staircase and continue up the stairs beyond.

As you near the top, you'll end up holding the Spirit Stone above your head and you'll be struck by lightning. ... Well, Tenchimaru, that was smart, now look what yo-- holy crap, you became a monster!? Suddenly, you'll find yourself surrounded by four men and you'll apparently be mistaken for some "damn Bake-danuki" they've been looking for. Well ... damn.

Hirai Village: You'll then find yourself in some building in some village somewhere. The man you find yourself with tells you that, to prove that you have nothing to do with the Tanuki, you'll need to return to Ishiuichi Mountain and bring them the head of their leader, Danzaburo. The old man will also take your Spirit Stone as a collateral for this deal. =/

In any case, feel free to explore the village. There is a shop in its east-central portion where you may want to stock up on some more Herbs: as you'll recall, the mountain did have its share of particularly nasty enemies, and the next time we ascend we'll actually end up fighting a boss, so ... yeah. Get dem munchies. The inn of the twon is just to the west of the shop and costs 14 Ryo: stay and save there. After, return to the overworld.

Overworld: Here, go southeast back to the mountain again.

Ishiuichi Mountain: It's time to go back up the mountain again. Do so as you already did; you can see the previous section for the details, though it's mostly that whole "go up bunches of stairs" deal. This time, however, when you reach the place with the five staircases, use the rightmost staircase. Go up that chain to reach Danzaburo at the end: speak with him to engage in battle.

Even with the best equipment on, Tenchimaru can expect to get hit for about 40~60 damage per hit, and usually returns about the same amount with the Iron Katana equipped. I found the Whirlwind Nature Skill to be pretty effective in this fight, especially compared to basic attacks: it often dealt more than 100 damage per hit. Seeing as Danzaburo has around 350 HP, that makes this fight a lot easier: try to come in with full SP and abuse that skill for a few turns. At relatively high levels (7 or so), that should end the fight without the need for healing. Otherwise, you'll probably heal every two or three turns: it would be best to heal when your HP falls under 80 since Danzaburo's damage can fluctuate pretty drastically, which can make things seem weaker than they may be. Still, it's a pretty easy fight.

When you end the fight, Danzaburo calls for a relent. He tells you that the Kitsune Yokai are the ones to blame for the recent trouble, that they are the ones wreaking havoc on Shikoku. Danzaburo is apparently the one to credit with holding them off so far, though he won't be able to manage it for much longer. He will then give you a Tanuki Lantern, which just so happens to look like Danzaburo's head. You can use this to fool the elder in Hirai; after doing so, Danzaburo requests that you return here.

Hirai Village: When you backtrack out of the dungeon, head to Hirai Village northwest of the mountain. (You can also just use the Kamiya Flight Skill to warp to the village of the same name, and travel further northwest: easier enemies, quicker access to inn, etc.) When you arrive in the village, go into the elder's house, which is just to the north of the inn. He'll ask you to forgive his distrust and tells you that you're welcome to stay and rest here anytime; you'll also regain your Spirit Stone. Head back to the mountain.

Ishiuichi Mountain: Once you return, speak with Danzaburo, who will be near the entrance. He'll mention that a monster got to Kyushu from the mainland, and he wants you to check it out. You'll then be warped outside of a village.

The facility to the west of the entrance of the town is the shop, where you can find some familiar items, so be sure to stock up. If you visit the northeastern building, you'll find it to be a temple. Like those in various other RPGs, you'll find that you can get healed here and even buy curative items.

If you visit the townspeople, you can find a bit of info. The main things of note are that there are various refugees coming from Shikoku in relatively large numbers, one of whom is an old man outside the village. You'll also learn that there is a village, Tsue, to the south. That's about it, though, so go ahead and return to the overworld.

While in the overworld, grinding for a good while will likely be necessary. The enemies here are a bit tougher than those you're used to: heading up to Level 9~11 wouldn't be too bad an idea. Just stay near Akaike for a while, lest you end up accidentally dying, so, y'know, heal often. When you're ready, though, head to the south and southwest of Akaike to find Tsue.

A generic items shop - or, generic at this point apparently - can be found due east of the inn. If you need to visit the temple so soon after the first one, it's in the northwestern corner of town. Shop-wise, again, you'll find nothing new in this town: it's mostly "just here". The east-central portion of the village will have the town elder's house. Speak with him to find that the Lord of Kumemotojo was attacked, though that in itself doesn't really help us much. Some other townspeople will mention a castle off to the south, so go on and head south in the overworld to it: it's actually more to the southwest, really, at the borders of some forest.

When you enter the town, if you need the inn, it's to the far west of the town entrance. The town's temple can be found next to the east-central exit of the town: the item shop and the equipment shop can be found due west of there, and in that order. It's been some time since we could buy equipment! The equipment here is quite expensive, but a great boost over your current stuff: I would wholly recommend grinding in the overworld for a while until you can afford all of the new stuff, really, or at least the Silver Katana and one or two new pieces of armor. (All of the armor is a +16 boost over the stuff you could last buy, so the cheapest there are the Asbestos Suit and Chain Leggings.) Grinding in general right now wouldn't be that bad: I'd try to hit Level 9~11.

There's not much else here other than the nice equipment shop. If you want to, you can enter the pagoda in the northwest corner of the town and visit the bedridden Lord, who was injured in the attack earlier. He mentions the Yokai in his delirium, indicating they were the likely attackers. Someone else in the town will also mention a port to the west of Akaike Village, so ... eh, sure. Need something to do.

^sr4|

Before leaving the village, do speak with the bedridden Lord in the northwestern pagoda, then leave. Outside, you'll find an NPC in front of the pagoda: you can battle this Kappa if you want to. If you grinded as I suggested and/or bought new armor at the minimum, this fight shouldn't be too hard, though it can be lengthy. With the armor, you shouldn't be taking much more than about 20~30 damage per hit, though with the Silver Katana you can easily dole out closer to 150~200 per hit: he has about 650~750 HP overall. When the battle is done, he'll offer you a deal: let him live and you'll learn where the Kappa chief is. He says that the Kappas are in the cave on the southeastern island.

What does this mean? We'll first eradicate the Kappas before going for that port town. For now, return to the overworld. Backtrack northeast to Tsue, then go east to the shoreline and southwest from there along the mountain chain. You'll soon see an island surrounded by water, with a bridge to the island nearby: cross and enter the cave on the island.

Cavern - 1F: When you enter the cave, begin by going west at the starting fork, then along the next path to the north. Use the second westbound path you reach, then follow it to a north/west fork. Go west until you hit the wall, then north and downstairs.

Cavern - B1F: When you enter this floor, begin by going far off to the south, then east to the fork. There, go east, and east at the next ones as well. This last eastward trek will put you on a sprialing path with the Kappa chief at the center: it's a linear path to him (other than the north/west fork you'll find: just go west and deeper into the spiral).

Speak with him and you'll quickly accuse the Kappa of the attack. He'll try throwing off the blame very quickly: the Kappa says that he part of the Hyosube Clan from the mainland, driven out of their homes by a "terrible menace", likely the Yokai again. He'll then mention a "she" - a "she" that could have taken the form of the Kappas and allowed the attack on the Lord, done by her, actually be blamed on the Kappas. Interesting theory, and it seems to sate Tenchimaru. ... My sword will not taste blood tonight, it seems. In any case, speak with the Kappa against outside of the battle to earn some Kappa Salve to give to the injured Lord.

Kappa Cave: When you're done with the stuff in the Kappas' cave, backtrack out of there (or just use the Flight Skill "Kumemotojo") and head back to the castle town.

Castle Town of Kumemotojo: Here, heal up in the inn if you need to, then enter the pagoda in the northwestern portion of the town. Go due north when you enter and approach and speak to the Lord lying on the ground. You'll give him the Kappa Salve, he'll use it, and immediately begin to feel better. Speak with him again and Tenchimaru - normally the confident guy - is suddenly hesitant when asking for a Ship Pass from the Lord: he'll gladly hand one over. Do any last-minute shopping before returning to the overworld.

Overworld: Begin by backtracking your way to Tsue Village, which is to the northeast of the Castle Town. From there, go back northeast to Akaike. Rest up in the inn there if you need to, then head west from there, just simply due west from the town. Once you pass the mountains, you'll be in the forests: go south and you'll find a bridge eventually. Cross it and enter the village to the east.

There's not much in the way in terms of items here: to the west of the town entrance is a generic items shop, to the east is the inn (18 Ryo), and north of there is a temple. ... To be honest, that's really all there is here. Speak with the man in front of the northeastern house: if you have the Ship Pass with you, you'll be taken to the mainland.

Shimozeki Village

After the astonishly quick trip on the boat, you will be on the mainland, having arrived in Shimozeki Village. There is not much of note here. The main thing is an interesting situation in the northwest corner of town: apparently, annually, this village sacrifices a woman to appease some monster around the village. The old man nearby requests your aid in getting rid of said monster. Eh, sure, why not. You're the main character, you can't die in this story. XD Opt to help the old man and he'll tell you to go to his village, beyond the mountains to the east. Heal up in the inn if you need to, then leave.

When you get to the overworld, grinding would be a pretty good idea to begin with, like every time we reach a new area. Here, you'll probably want to hit Level 12 or so before continuing on. Grinding here should be pretty easy, mostly because of the Sunakake-baba enemies: they're relatively rare, but yield a crapload of EXP. They are also resilient, however: you will likely need to use the Running Blaze skill twice to be able to kill them without them actually fleeing. The Exorcism Fist Special skill also works, and it may even be a one-hit-kill at times.

Anyhow, moving along. If you head along to the south of Shimozeki Village, and a bit east, you'll quickly find Nagata Village. It's not really required to go there, but if you want, it's your choice. Otherwise, go east of Shimozeki and to the mountains. Go south and hug them for a while as you go: eventually, a path will open up to the north. Follow it to a large plain (you're now mroe or less due east of Shimozeki) and go east and across the bridge. From there, go north to find Akiyoshi Village.

When you arrive, feel free to use the inn in the southwestern corner of town (21 Ryo). There is another shop mimicking that of Nagata's in the southeast corner, too, if you didn't go there for Pufferfish Liver earlier. (Not like it's needed, but it could be helpful in a few annoyingly-hard battles, or to pacify the Sunakake-baba long enough for you to beat it. There's also a temple in the northeast corner of town if you need it.

If you speak with the old man in the house north of the items shop, you'll learn that the monster awaiting the sacrifice you heard of back in Shimozeki is waiting in the shrine of this village. You'll be given the Shrine Key so you can enter it. Be sure to save before you do so! Buying an Antidote or two wouldn't be too bad, either, since the monster in the shrine can poison you. The shrine itself is in the northeastern corner of the town: speak with the man in front of it to be allowed in.

Enemy Name Max HP EXP. Yield Ryo Yield Known Item Drops
Ox Oni 450 800 EXP. 350 Ryo None
Vengeful Spirit 225 118 EXP. 12 Ryo None

Akiyoshi Shrine Dungeon: The dungeon in the village shrine is simpler to navigate than the previous two dungeons we have gone through. Begin by simply following the linear path before you. It will eventually split up: go west at this fork, and the sake at the next one and the next ones beyond that. Ultimately, most of these forms are actually loops that are just the long way around so it doesn't really matter whether or not you go along them. This is even a pretty decent place to grind: Vengeful Spirits are the prominent enemies here, and they're pretty weak defensively, so grinding up EXP. is not hard - maybe about 500~1,000 per minute? If so, you could easily max out your Level (Level 40, 65,536 EXP.) within an hour.

At the end of the path is the boss of the dungeon, the monster to whom women are sacrificed on the logic of "just 'cuz" - the Ox Oni! This battle will be very heavy in the use of skills: the Ox Oni has not only a lot of HP, but a high Defense stat and Attack to back it up. You shouldn't expect to deal more than 20 damage with basic attacks - even if ideally equipped and Level 12 or 13 - and also will easily take 120+ damage back. I would recommend the use of the Twister Shuriken Skill: this seems to be the most accurate at this point, and usually deals a little over 115 damage. You can expect a three- or four-hit kill as a result, since this thing seems to have around 450 HP. The Storm Shuriken Skill - if you're a little overleveled (Level 13) - is even better.

If you're having trouble with this battle, then don't worry! Perhaps this is intentional of the game for it to be this hard. Not further ahead - indeed, in the town of Okeyama - you'll be able to buy the Oni Killer weapon, which will deal much more damage to the Oni Ox. Just go forward to that point, buy it, and return back here.

After the battle, backtrack out of the dungeon. Be sure to use that Antidote I recommended you buy earlier if you got poisoned in the battle!

Akiyoshi Village: When you return into the village proper, if you look around, you'll find a bunch of wispy ghosts floating around. ... Apparently, somehow, everyone in the village died - except the shopkeeps >_> - while you were in the dungeon. Don't ask me how, I have no idea, and it's even more confusing that they're thanking you. O_o Anyhow. Heal up in the inn and leave.

Overworld: It's a pretty simple trip. Go back south to the bridge you crosses earlier, then begin to head east. You'll eventually reach a long north/south wall of mountains: go north to the shoreline and you'll see a building, if you want, though there's no point. Go south from there through a mountain pass to find a castle town. That, you should go into.

If anyone's curious, I'm pretty sure that the Japanese word "okeyama" translates as "immortal mountain". Fun fact.

When you enter the town, feel free to read the signpost near the entrance: it advertises a bounty on the head of the Oni known as Ura of Kinojo. Hmm... Anyhow, time to make use of the town's facilities: northeast of the town entrance is the inn (22 Ryo) and the items shop (nuthin' new), with the familiar temple off to the north. There is finally an armory, though, so we can finally get some items 'n' stuff. The armory doesn't feature a lot that is new, but what's new is good. The Chain Mail is perhaps the most pertinent purchase, as well as the most expensive: it's a pretty huge boost in Defense, though, so it'd be worth it. The Oni Killer weapon is less pertinent, though if you haven't beaten the Oni Ox because it overpowers you, you'll probably want to buy it. But the Chain Mail is the most important thing here: grind for it if you must!

In the two-room house north of the armory, you can find some people who are actually helpful in determining how to get to Ura: he apparently resides south of Mekajima Island, where he will eat humans. However, apparently, only Oni can enter Kinojo Castle, which is on Mekijima Island. Cool. If you go into the large pagoda on the north side of town, and speak with the man within, tell him you'll kill Ura and you'll apparently somehow open the way up to Mekijima. (Not sure if it's necessary to do this myself, but, eh, worth a shot.)

Kinojo Castle - Exterior: When you're in the overworld, again, be sure to use the Alter command in the action menu so that you can become an Oni and thereby enter the castle.

Kinojo Castle - 1F: When you enter, go north a bit and into the clearing. There are two exits from it: one to the northwest and another to the southeast. The southeastern path is a lengthy dead-end, so just northwest and along the linear path for a while until you reach the stairs to the next floor.

Kinojo Castle - B1F: B1F's path is also pretty linear. As you go along the path here, though, you'll find Ibaraki impeding you partway: Ibaraki, as you'll recall, is the guy who attacked you brutally earlier back in Shikoku. He'll tell you that he never had the intent of stealing your Spirit Stone (obvious, given he didn't take it despite completely obliterating us); rather, he just wanted a worthy opponent.

He then hands you the Cao Pi's Bow before leaving... Yeah, he's a bit wacky in the head. Why possess the Cao Pi's Bow, though? It's a battle item you can use to shoot arrows ... though it's pretty weak, so even though it's infinite-use, it's not worth much. But do not trash it! You will want it later on!!

Anyhow, continue along back to 1F.

Kinojo Castle - 1F: This part of 1F is a bit trickier to navigate, at least superficially. In reality, you just need to go south to the wall of the first clearing, and go west as much as possible and avoiding use of any deviating forks. Then go north through the large clearing, then go east along that hall until you hit the wall (do not stop), then go south and use the stairs.

Kinojo Castle - B1F: When you enter this room, simply go northeast and speak with the thing there: it is the Oni, Ura! The battle doesn't take long to get rollin'. Ura is probably one of the more evasive enemies in the game: do not expect to be able to hit him with physical attacks, you'll just take 125~200 damage in return for nothing. In fact, the main thing you're supposed to do in this battle is use the Cao Pi's Bow you got earlier! That thing is crazy-powerful against Ura, easily dealing upwards of 600 damage. It should only take three hits to kill him, and there shouldn't be any way for him to kill you in that amount of time if you came in fully healed, unless he somehow gets critical hits every time.

After the battle, simply leave the dungeon and return to Okeyama Town. (You can use the Okeyama Flight Skill if you're in danger.)

Interestingly enough, there is an NPC running around in that general area saying: "Left, left, up, down, right, right, up, down". Hm... If you speak with the old man in the northwestern corner of the village, he'll mention an old sage that likes that dance. In fact, a lot of people in this town know him as the Toad Sage: he's an old hermit living in a cave bearing his name, though he's also known, to put it one of the NPC's terms, for being "a cranky old bastard". Hm.

Anyhow, stock up and leave the village. From there, go off far to the north, then east from there along the peninsula until you reach the Toad Sage's Cave.

When you go into the cave, you'll find a large rock blocking your path to the north. When you approach it, there will be a faint wind heard behind it. When Tenchimaru mentions that there may be a trick to moving the rock, enter the following sequence on the D-Pad: do it while the text box is up, too, don't press A.

Left, Left, Up, Down, Right, Right, Up, Down

With the dance properly performed, the rock suddenly disappears, 'cuz logic. This dungeon is beyond here quite a long maze to navigate. First, go north to the fork and head west. As you go along, a path will open to the south: keep moving past it and go along the path to the west you see. Again ignore the next southbound path you find and keep going north from there until an eastbound path opens up. Follow it and continue east at the next fork. The path will be linear for a while: keep an eye out for the second eastbound path that opens up and follow it when you see it. This will take you to the Toad Sage. Heal before you speak with him!

At the end of the path, Tenchimaru will ask the Toad Sage as to what is going on at the Capital. However, he blatantly refuses to give any such information, preferring to remain cut-off from the world. Speak with him several more times for a mildly humorous exchange between the two, equally-stubborn men before, eventually, the Toad Sage decides that, if you beat his Giant Toad, you'll be given what you came for.

The Giant Toad is a particularly difficult enemy, primarily due to his brute strength: you can usually see 150+ damage per attack, and easily expect 400+ from a Firewheel skill, rare though it is. It would be best, as a result, to use the Phantasm Nature skill if you have it to lower his strength. From there, really, your only big danger is Firewheel which won't be affected by Phantasm: if hit by that, then you should use your Fountain Skill. Otherwise? Open the battle proper by Altering to your Oni form and using Exorcism Kick if you have it: that should deal some 400 damage. The remainder of your attacks, once you run low on AP, should probably be communicated through basic attacks or the Windmill skill. The only real need for healing should be every three or four turns, barring the use of Firewheel.

After the battle ends, speak with the Toad Sage one more time and Tenchimaru will ask about the Oni at the Suzakumon Gate. Apparently, their leader came from the mainland, and she's marching northward. As for the Emperor and Empress? Nothing is known.

If you speak with the townspeople, you'll that a Karasu-tengu lies atop Mount Fushi: it is a mountain that lies just to the east of this village, and it's the highest village on the mainland. One sleeping dude even mentions that the tengu wields a Gale Tachi sword. The significance of that? I dunno. Let's go and find out: heal up, stock up, save, and head east in the overworld.

When you arrive at Mount Fushi, go north and you'll quickly find a fork. Go east from it and upstairs, then up the next two sets of stairs near there. From there, go west along the ledge until you find some more upbound stairs. Ascend those and go northwest along the ledges until you reach some stairs. Ascend them, then, when you get on the next ledge, do not use the northeast stairs but instead go east past them. This will put you on a linear path towards the boss in the northeastern corner of the area.

When you speak with him, the Karasu-tengu will claim to have spread the rumors about the Gale Tachi to lure you here. (Huh. Never heard of it until five minutes ago. >_>) In any case, as he has been given orders to kill you, he attacks you. The Karasu-tengu, much you probably expected, is both sturdy and strong: you shouldn't expect to deal much more than 80 damage with basic attacks at this point, even though you'll likely get closer to 150~200 on the return. ... In reality, though, he's really easy to beat because the Windmill Shuriken skill does a preset, consistent amount of 256 damage in this fight. That's about three hits, and he can't beat you that fast unless he is insanely lucky on critical hits.

After the battle, you will end up with the Gale Tachi (expected) and Bypass Key (wut dat)? The Gale Tachi katana is quite valuable: even though it only boosts Attack by 120 (versus the 208 of the Cursed Murasame), you'll find it actually hits twice in battles, making its power generally considered as a +240 boost to Attack. ;)

When you're done drooling over the Gale Tachi ... *wipes it off* ... you're more than welcome to use that door you bypassed on the way up here. The Bypass Key will let you through.

Once you have arrived into the Kanto region - yup, back in Japan, baby - you'll find a village very nearby. Enter it and, upon entering, go northwest and use the inn. If you need to restock, a generic items shop is to the east of it and a generic temple in the northern part of town. That's really about it, here: the main other thing are all of the townspeople complaining about the lord in Eto Castle, apparently about raising land taxes.

When you arrive in town - the first that doesn't have a sign, interestingly enough - enter the westernmost building of those immediately in front of you to find the inn. The next one to the east is the generic items shop, and then comes the ever-useful armory. There, if at all possible, try to buy the Ninja Armor: this will keep you good for a good while, and is cheaper per-point than the other armors. I daresay it would even be worth the grinding necessary to purchase it since it would likely be an incremenet of 50% or more in your Defense stat. (I'm Level 20 with ideal equipment and have 284 Defense: Ninja Armor over Chain Mail is a change of +140.)

Other than this, there's also the generic temple in the northwestern portion of the town. There's not much else to do in this town for now. The people in the town mention a variety of things, like a secret entrance to the castle and the lord's inordinarily vicious kitty-kitty. There's also the generic whining about how he's changed and stuff, more or less stuff you heard already in Hotoyama.

Anyhow, for now, we'll have to leave town. Our destination - Kuroha Village - is not far off: go east of town across the bridge, then northeast.

Isaku will agree, so long as you give him the Cao Pi's Bow with him. You don't get a choice in the matter, receiving the Silent Sandals outright.

When you return to the Eto Castle area, approach the large pagoda to the north. If you were to use the Vision Special Skill while transformed, a small square would appear on that wall: there is a hidden door there you will be able to see because of that skill. You can also just follow the screenshot nearby: get on the southwest corner of the building and face north to find the hidden door. Before you enter, it would be wise to heal and the like. When inside the castle, go north and east to the north-central room of the building where the lords always seem to lie. Speak with him and he'll sic his cat on you.

... Gotokuneko - the cat - really isn't that difficult to beat: it has insanely low defenses. I was able to deal 1,000+ damage to it with two hits from the Gale Tachi at Level 20. =/ It does have ability of its own, though: it will mostly use the Fire Wisp skill, which can deal upwards of 300 damage, and it can also use a basic strike for about half that. I would just stick to outright attacks here.

After the brief battle, the Lord will admit to having had Gotokuneko kill the townspeople down in Hotoyama, and decides to render himself in his true form, Onibaba. This is sort of like the inverse of the previous battle: Onibaba is really resilient (don't expect over 200 damage per turn here without the Windmill Shuriken Skill), but also barely returns the damage (rarely over 25~40). The one exception to the latter rule is the Fire Wisp skill, which hits above 300 damage most of the time, but the Fountain Skill ought to suffice. Overall, I'd say spam the Gale Tachi for the most part: its damage is slightly less than that of the Windmill Shuriken, I'll admit, but it helps to conserve SP.

Once this is all done, head east and northeast from Eto to Kuroha.

Snow Witch's Cave - 1F: When you enter the cave, begin by heading to the east until you find a north/south fork. Go north from it and then east at the next two forks. The path will take you linearly to the stairs to the next floor.

Snow Witch's Cave - B1F: When you arrive, go south and along the path to a four-way intersection. Go south there to another fork, and go east from it, then east at the next one. Further along will be a north/west fork: go north and along the path to the next floor.

Snow Witch's Cave - B2F: Here, go west and along the path for a bit. Bypass the first fork, but when you reach the second go east until you hit the wall, then head north. You'll see a person there: speak with her and you'll learn that she is Yuki-onna, the snow girl! She will posit that you're here to stop her from enacting Lady Dakki's plans; Dakki is a woman who is trying to create a new world. Of course, this all culminates in battle. Quelle surprise.

Yuki-onna, unlike the previous few bosses, has a consistently powerful offense rather than an offense limited to a specific few powerful attacks to worry about. In general, you can expect to receive 200+ damage per hit in this battle. Assuming you have Holy Well (Level 22) at this point, though, it's not much to worry about: the battle will mostly devolve to "attack, attack, heal". Offensively, you don't have much to offer aside from the Gale Tachi: other than use of Exorcism Kick from your Oni form, you really should stick to plain attacks for the sake of conserving SP for Holy Well or Fountain. The use of Phantasm, though, can be effective in circumventing some damage for a while. It'll be a bit of a grind, though it is really pretty easy with proper healing.

After the battle, Yuki-onna will mention something about her regrets about "falling at the hands of that traitor's son", but she dies before real confirmation can be gleaned. Nonetheless, you will have the Blizzard Tachi in your ice-cold hands. (It's better than the Gale Tachi, even accounting for the double-hit property, so equip it.) Now, walk through the warp hole to the north.

Mount Zangetsu, like a number of previous dungeons, is winding for no real purpose: no treasures to find or anything. Lucky for you, I'm here. When you arrive, go up the stairs nearby, then go far east and up the stairs there. Then go west along the ledge and up, then west and down, and from there it's a linear path.

At the end, you'll find a person on the ledge, the Great Tengu. Apparently, he knows that you got rid of his subordinate on Mount Fushi - Karasu-tengu - and he is quite displeased. The Great Tengu is actually very powerful: he'll probably deal well over 400 damage per hit, so if you can I'd bother grinding up to Level 25~26 outside of the mountain if this begins to give you trouble, even if you have the ideal equipment set. He also is very evasive and, when hit, he doesn't take a ton of damage, rarely over 250. He will even use the Weakness Skill to attempt to lower that further; after two uses, Tenchimaru will only hit for about 20~30. In this instance, the battle will be very heavy on your use of SP: early in the battle, you will likely want to spam Firewheel for about two or three turns, depending on how lucky you get. These should hit for well over 500 damage and are unaffected by Weakness, which is very beneficial. When Tenchimaru falls anywhere below 500 HP, healing with Holy Well - or Fountain if you're within 400 HP of the max - should be used since there could be a one-hit-kill coming up. Four - or five, if you're unlucky - Firewheels ought to do Great Tengu in.

After the Great Tengu's dying cry, "For the Lady Dakki!", you'll find a clay figurine next to his body, the stolen Shintai. You'll also get the Great Tengu's Zangetsu katana. The latter is very powerful, so be sure to equip it. Now, leave the mountain and return to Ootori.

Ootori Village: When you return to Ootori, use the inn and restock as usual. Head in the northwestern house where the priest still lies and speak with him. He'll confirm that this is the Shintai that you possess. Tenchimaru then asks for one strange request: to tell everyone in the village that Heikichi - the boy who is picked on a lot, as you noticed when spoke with the children - is responsible for bringing back the Shintai. And then the priest requests you to place the Shintai on the altar nearby. (Okay, that's even stranger, that can't be good.)

As you approach and attempt to interact with it, a voice echoes in your mind: a familiar one, from the Shintai itself. It claims that, in the woods to the east of Mount Zangetsu, there is a hidden Yokai hamlet. You'll also be asked to take a Charm with you. Anyhow, stock up and leave town.

Overworld: Go back north towards Mount Zangetsu. When you reach it, turn east and go along the shoreline for a bit and you'll eventually see a bit of forest to the southeast, near the mountains too like in the nearby screenshot. In the Yokai village, first peruse the usual inn northeast of the entrance (32 Ryo), west-central generic items shop, and the temple north of the inn.

Then speak with everyone. You'll find a lot of people remarking on your appearance's similarities to that of your father when he was young ... wait, they knew your father!? The elder in the west-central house will comment briefly on the history of the Yokai: they fled their homeworld after losing a war for it. The Yokai since have lived on this planet, trying to maintain a peaceful, quiet existence, though some are not happy with it ... those like Dakki, who wish to conquer it. He then comments on your heritage: a mixture of human from your mother and Oni from your father, the latter of whom was born in this village. Your mother died at the hands of the Yokai's enemies, and your father later left you with Master Eirinsai. He was sealed inside the Shintai now at Ootori.

Speak with him again and you'll learn of your next destination: Ezo Island, to the north.

Outside of the home, speak with the woman just next to the entrance: she is Kotore, your sister, who has longed to meet you for a long time. She'll give you an Amulet to take with you.

So, anyhow, in the overworld go north, then go west and just hug the mountains for a while. As you go, the curvature in the mountains near the western shoreline, if you continue hugging them, sends you north. This time, just go straight north to the shoreline, then east for a while. Once you leave Shichinai, it would first be prudent to do a good deal of grinding and resting in the village. Level 27 or 28 is pretty much appropriate for this point in time, I daresay maybe even Levels 29 or 30; otherwise, you'll have some difficult times up ahead. Of especial note when grinding is the Moonlight Sword Samurais may drop, as it is the second-best weapon in the game, and 20% stronger than the Zangetsu you probably have. Be sure to grind!

When you feel ready, go north of Shichinai and you should eventually run into a statue, which will claim itself to be Pushiri. Apparently, Pushiri was going to his village when a Yokai imprisoned him in the Jizo statue. If you opt to let him out, he'll tell you that you need the Exorcism Mallet. According to him, the Yokai that sealed him should possess it, and he headed southeast. If you go east-southeast (more like it) you'll find the entrance to a cave. That one is no good, go further south along the chain of mountains to find it.

Nurari's Cave - 1F: The first floor of this cave is, as usual, mostly like navigating a series of forks in a maze. Begin by going east from the first fork, north at the next, then west at the next two. At the next fork, you'll find a linear path taking you along to the next floor.

Nurari's Cave - B1F: Entering this floor puts you at, more or less, a four-way intersection. Go south from it, then east at the next crossing. Go east and south at the next two forks and you'll find a clearing where some Yokai is. He will reveal himself to be Nurarihyon. He has been waiting for you, knowing you'd come here after Pushiri told you to, knowing that he holds to key to getting past that first cave we found. Of course, it all escalates in a fight. Doesn't everything?

Nurarihyon is mostly limited in terms of his overreliance on the Tornado skill. As you can probably guess by now, Skills don't take into consideration anyone's stats, always dealing within a set range of RNG-influenced damage, that's all. The Tornado Skill usually does some 150~250 damage, so it's not much to worry about, maybe a Holy Well every four turns, nothing material. On the off chance Nurarihyon does attack, it will usually be for about 400~500 damage. For the most part, I'd just spam my fighting skills and heal whenever I get under 400 or 500 HP. The fight shouldn't take too long, he only has about 3,500 HP (which about 7 basic attacks).

Winning the battle will net you the Exorcism Mallet.

Nurarihyon's Cave: When you decide to leave the cavern, it would be wisest to do so by using the Flight Skill to Shichinai Village.

Overworld: Heal up and restock in Shichinai before leaving, then head north again to the Jizo statue. With the Exorcism Mallet in hand, Pushiri will be freed and hands you some Messenger Tabi as thanks. Pushiri also joins, for the heck of it, though you'll need him anyways. Go east-southeast from the Jizo statue's location to find the northern of the two caves we found earlier: in other words, the blocked one. When inside, simply go east and the rock won't be there, letting you through to the other side.

There, Pushiri will leave (aw, already?) and take the Exorcism Mallet with him, it being a treasure of his family's. Anyhow, go southeast to find Ashorota Village.

Cure Poison 27 Ryo Cures poisoning.

Buy Salts 10 Ryo Gives you the "Salts" item. Effect: Prevents random battles temporarily.

As usual, there's a useful inn to peruse northwest of the village entrance, with a generic items shop next to it and a temple northeast of the two. Beyond these basic functions, though, the town is of little to no use to you. The townspeople - those who aren't infatuated with Chinatsu and crying out their love to her to random passerby, anyhow - will note that there was some flying beast headed toward the mountain, Mount Hotobetsu, to the south. Hm. Sounds like something to check out. Check it out: it can be found by going southwest of the village to the mountains, then following them southward.

Mount Hotobetsu

LOCAL ENEMY BESTIARY (Note that HP is very approximate)
Enemy Name Max HP EXP. Yield Ryo Yield Known Item Drops
Deserter 1,000 1,272 EXP. 49 Ryo Antidote
Kirin 1,500 996 EXP. 90 Ryo None
Kuko 750 794 EXP. 134 Ryo None
Red Oni 1,500 856 EXP. 81 Ryo None

Mount Hotobetsu is sort of in the shape of a spiral ... kinda makes me think of the Tower of Babel from The Illusion of Gaia for some reason. =/ Anyhow. This also makes the path easy to navigate: just a bunch of two-way forks ... and just two, really. Go east at those two forks and you'll quickly get on a long, but linear path to the end. There, you'll find someone to talk with: a servant of Dakki, the Great Tengu.

Or a Great Tengu, apparently; apparently, there are multiple Great Tengus, and this one is supposedly a good guy. He's been tracking Dakki and followed her here, where she oddly vanished. He decides to leave the rest in your hands. ... Thanks. *raspberry* You do get told that you will need to summon your inner Oni to figure out where she is. You will also be told that you can only stop her with the Sunlight Sword.

After the scene, you can speak with Kotone who appears nearby -- she followed you all of the way here to tell you something: to not fight Ibaraki! He's an ally of Dakki, but Kotone feels that he's not evil. Anyhow, go into your Altered state and use the Inner Oni Special Skill. You'll learn the Dakki is by the Emperor's side (no surprise there) and the Sunlight Sword is in the forest to the southwest of Shiroyama Village.

Mount Hotobetsu: Once done here, just use the Flight Skill "Shiroyama" to head to the village of the same name. If you can't use it due to lack of SP, return to Ashorota, sleep in the inn, and then fly.

Shiroyama Village: If you came directly here, heal and save. Then leave to the overworld.

^sr9|

Overworld: Head southwest and into the forest here. As you'll recall, if you've been following this guide, I noted out a point earlier that you couldn't get into for whatever reason, for it just kept you out. Now it's open. The spot, as before, is the only blank spot in the majority of the forest, the spot noted in the screenshot nearby. You can now walk in there, just 'cause. (By the way, grinding in the overworld here is pretty easy; lotta new enemies with low bulk and high EXP.)

Sunlight Sword Shrine: When you arrive, go north and into the building there, which leads into a bit of maze-like area. Go east from the entrance, then follow the path for a bit. Go north at all of the forks thereafter and you'll easily find the end. It seems your brother Saizo is there! He has already found the Sunlight Sword and hands it over to you so you can use it to enter the Capital. Equip it and leave the area!

Sunlight Sword Shrine: From here, use the Kamioka Flight Skill.

Kamioka Village: When you arrive, heal up and restock in the town, then leave.

Overworld: As you'll recall, Kamioka Village is the closest one to the Capital, which was a castle we could not enter. =/ Now we can enter it: equip the Sunlight Sword and go east to the castle and approach it. The Sunlight Sword will shine brightly and you will be allowed to enter.

Capital - Exterior: When you arrive in the area, simply go north and into the large building.

Capital - 1F: Begin by going north along the main hall; it will diverge at the north side, going east and west. Go west and use the stairs.

Capital - B1F: The path here is pretty linear: once you arrive, go east and along the given path and you'll find your next boss, Gozu. Gozu is pretty strong, usually hitting for about 400~500 damage, though it's easy to return that now in increments of over 1,000 damage per hit with ease, and even more if you opt for the Exorcism skillset. He has some 6,000 HP, though. It won't be a hard or difficult fight, you'll only really need to heal twice, if that, and the EXP. after the fight will likely be enough to get that level-up that will fill up your HP/SP anyhow. =P Enjoy the Seiryu Hood you get, too, it's the best in the game.

Past him are some more stairs.

Capital - 1F: Follow the path for a bit to find another boss, Mezu. It's more or less the same situation as with Gozu, though you'll heal a bit more often (more like every three turns now) and deal a bit less damage (about 800 per hit). He's also a lot sturdier: about 9,000 HP. Thus, if you don't get the level-up from this fight, you'll probably need to leave and return to Kamioka for some healing, as this fight will tax you. You get the best gloves, the Byakko Gauntlets, for winning, though, so it's worth it.

Further along, we'll find Ibaraki again. Time to ba-- No, he just sees Kotone's Amulet and flees, leaving the Suzaku Leggings (the best leg-gear in the game) behind. O_o Okay, whaaaaaatever... Let's continue on.

Capital - B1F: When you get here, just go northwest and on down.

Capital - B2F: This floor is a linear spiral into the center. Partway along, you'll encounter a boss, Shuten-doji, who iterates interestingly on the treasonous plan he's brewing to throw a coup, take over for Dakki, and then rule the Oni. In any case, he nonetheless challenges you to a battle. This time, the input and output for damage will be relatively equal: you'll usually be hitting each other for 800~900 damage apiece. He also has an estimated 10,000 ~ 12,000 HP, so this fight will last a while; it's nice that he frequently uses the Firewheel skill, though, which is basically half-damage for him, so it's not like you'll use Holy Well every three turns, more like every four to six, so you shouldn't have much of a problem.

Enjoy the best armor - the Genbu Armor - when you win, and be sure to equip it. If you have anything to do, such as grinding, it would be best to leave and do it now. Otherwise, continue into the spiral for the end of it all. You'll find Dakki there; she'll rant briefly before the battle starts.

Dakki's power sort of matches that of Shuten-doji, though to a higher degree: the input/output for this is relatively equal, both of you slamming about 1,500 points of damage into each other on average per turn. She does help you cope for this by using Flash and Firewheel every now and then, which are set closer to 300 and 500 respectively, but it's still one of those fights where you'll heal every two to four turns nonetheless, so coming in with maxed SP is very important; it would be barely manageable at Level 35 or lower. She has about 35,000 ~ 40,000 HP, too, so this will also last a good while. Don't be afraid to empty it all out, though, since you won't have anything beyond.

Ending Translation

Congrats on finishing the game! In case you are playing the Japanese version, here's a translation of the ending, starting just after the battle with Dakki.

Spoiler. Highlight text to view

Dakki - "Ahahahahahahaha! You cannot hope to destroy me! I shall be reborn again and again, until the end of time! Ahahahaha ... ghk!"

---

[In the castle town]

Saizu Hiryu - "Finished already? I wanted a piece of her, too... Ugh..."

Tenchimaru - "Saizo! You're bleeding!? Grab ahold of me before you fall!"

Saizo Hiryu - "Hehe... I must look so pitiful... I never thought I'd see the day you surpassed me..."

Tenchimaru - "Let's return home."

[Tenchimaru used the Flight skill!]

---

[In Kakure Village]

Tenchimaru - "I need to see my sister. Wait here for me, Saizo."

Saizo Hiryu - "Sister...?"

Tenchimaru - "It's al ong story... I had never met her until recently... I'll introduce you next time."

[Tenchimaru used the Flight skill!]

---

[In the hidden Yokai hamlet]

Elder - "Tenchimaru! Welcome back! We owe you a great debt!"

Tenchimaru - "Do you know where Kotone is?"

Elder - "I'm afraid Kotone left in search of Ibaraki and hasn't been seen since... They're both lovers..."

Tenchimaru - "Really...?"

Elder - "So, what are you going to do now?"

Tenchimaru - "I'm going back to my hamlet."

Elder - "I see... Be careful then."

[Tenchimaru used the Flight skill!]

---

[Back in Kakure Village]

Tenchimaru - "Saizo! I'm back!"

Saizo Hiryu - "I thought of something while you were gone. Maybe we could look for other survivors from this villages when I'm better?

Tenchimaru - "That's a great idea!"

---

[Screen fades to narration...]

"When the evil wind died away... Quiet dusk fell upon the land..."

THE END

Enemy Bestiary

The data within this section is intended to list all of the data on the enemies in the game. However, because this game is a bit painful with its RAM and the analysis thereof, most of stats one should be able to derive are not listed here: as it is, you're lucky I'm able to somewhat approximate the HP values. =/ Sorry, but that's how it is until I can actually find the values in the game itself. Level-Up Stats

This section will discuss the statistical growth of Tenchimaru as he goes throughout his journey. It will discuss all of the stats, whose functions you probably already know so I won't bother going into a pointless description. The most important thing here, though, is that Attack and Defense here are referred to by their base values: that is, the Attack and Defense stats here are considered without using any equipment (yup, naked Tenchimaru FTW). That's the big thing. Also note that EXP. totals (and thus the "Next Lv." values) are a bit approximate since the game refuses to give exact EXP. totals, just next-level values. Sorry.
